And now they took off read/execute permissions on the Mandrake-devel

language, but what gives? I'm not really looking for the ISO, I want a
working FTP mirror that I can mirror to our FTP servers so that we can
test out network installs. It's just frustrating at this point. Anyone

Is it via the Mandrake Update function on the desktop?

What do you mean? Do you mean installing without rebooting from the installer?

Well, probably copy whatever you want to update on your system to a directory
and then do rpm -UvhF *.

I kept having a problem get XFree 4 to work with my ATI Mach 64

but it didn't, so here goes:

My card is supported by XFree 4.0.1 with acceleration (2d, and 3d I
think.)
This is specified on the driver status pages:

  http://www.xfree86.org/4.0.1/Status6.html#6

When I install it asks, "Do you want to keep X 3.3" and I always click
on
"no". In the packages section, I always pick the 4.x version of
XFree86-server. Yet, despite this, it always winds up automatically
  installing XFree86-server-common-3.3.6 and XFree86-Mach64-3.3.6 without
  asking me.

There could be a bug in the installer about 3D configuration because
Mach64 is
only accelerated (3D) with XFree 3.3. I take a look on this issue, thanks

What do you want to do for this card, it is not supported with XFree-4.0.1, so
if you want XFree, you have to use XFree-3.3 or take driver from nvidia (binary

[Cooker] WindowMaker-0.62.1-17mdk - icons stop showing

2000-09-07 Thread Pedro Rosa

Just a "feature" not a bug.
Several of the standard icons for WindowMaker are missing on the screen
when one _updates_ to build 17. The problem seems due to the fact that
icons were relocated from /usr/share/WindowMaker/Icons to
/usr/X11R6/share/WindowMaker/Icons. Unfortunately old user settings
ignore completely the /usr/X11R6 path.

Meanwhile the restoring of settings through "wmaker.inst" (well it's the
standard installation tool isn't it?) delivers them to correct settings
but it restores the old "traditional" WindowMaker menu. This may be good
or bad, depending on how users know something more than a click on a
bitmap. I have users here that look horrified to a black screen with a
flashing underscore. Their reaction is worse than a earthquake victim.
For such people, this menu change can be nuclear for their brains...

[Cooker] ImageMagick-5.2.3-1 rebuild requires ImageMagick-devel???

2000-09-07 Thread Pedro Rosa

One more package requiring its own compiled libraries/includes on /usr.
This looks more and more like a plague...
People please note these things in a more careful way. This is the worst
error Mandrake may carry. Right now it may be not so sensitive in a 90%
Lintel environment with a very fresh distro. But a small change on
processor architecture, a devel package of a previous version/build. And
trouble will come. Presently I'm building packages for a PII Kalamath,
for this I use a dual-Celleron machine. And I have to use a Pentium
devel package to build this stuff... Now imagine a relation like:
Athlon-Itanium-Pentium (yeah, it's a "stupid" relation but think about
the meaning)... If we proceed this path that will break possible
cross-compiling chances. More than building the package from one strike.
The libraries are already there, right? On that same package that you
are building right now. So why they should be "previously" located on
/usr/lib???.

And what if I use an old package? Well maybe I have 500 tons of binaries
that depend on this old pack... Isn't it possible? What if I do need
that old package still on my station? Why I do need to "upgrade" before
rebuilding? Why do i need to downlod _both_ the source and the binaries
of one and the same package? What if I don't note that versions/builds
differ? In this particular case that is what happens...
ImageMagick-5.2.3-1 requires only "ImageMagick-devel"... So no wonder if
compiles/builds will fail. Or we get some schizo binaries and get
wondering about what went wrong...

What if I don't need this library on this machine? Why I should install
it? Maybe I need to build it for something else. To study the stuff, to
install on other machine, to make a later install... No, you first must
install it... Doesn't this slightly remind something to you?

Pretty simple.

Deselect all the package groups.
Do not select individual packages.

You'll get about 180MB of pretty basic packages.

the first beta (e.g. the iso) was stable enough if you consider the core

for the rest, many things were broken, they are currently being fixed.

If you're using KDE 1.1.2 as I do, this results in a long row of

Line 79 should be as follows:

Re: [Cooker] bugs?

2000-09-07 Thread Rodrigo

At what did you think when you wrote "it doesn't work"? What is wrong?

I tried using the Sawfish config tool inside the GNOME control panel, but
none of the options (positioning, resizing, etc.) display a thing, it just
hangs there, but the control panel doesn't lock up. I tried the same both
at work and in my home, same result. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Yes, the latest mandrake_desk xinitrc. I run Mandrake 7.1.
BTW, background configuration (right click on desktop and
choose "configure background") doesn't work as well since
 kde2 beta4 was released.

"Configure background" on desktop is handled by gmc.

Check your gmc/mc and control-center packages are up to date..

To get my system to dial like it used to under

  modprobe ppp_generic and modprobe ppp_async. I think
  the better solution is
to put the following line in my modules.conf:-

  alias char-major-108 ppp_async

Does anyone know what 81 and 180 are under 2.2.16 (or
how can I find out myself; I guess I would have to go
on the module sources, but which file?):

From /usr/src/linux/Documentation/devices.txt

char-major-180 is usb

char-major-81 is video4linux (bttv, etc..)

It broke with the 2.2.15 kernel as shipped. Since the 2.2.15 source
didn't compile I tracked down the 2.2.16 kernel source. It didn't work
with the stock 2.2.16 nor with the kernel compiled 8 ways to sunday
either.
