HI! Greetz from Croatia! I downloaded MDK8.0BETA3 and tried to install. ReiserFS, GeForce and so on.. and everything went fine...although I have some suggestions: - make an option to DISABLE supermount - maybe under every picture/billboard should be some comment like 'Designers Team', 'Programmers at work', or some better comment... - i want to see what package is installing, maybe to make some advanced button near the picture, so I can switch to table where I can see what is installing and how much time it takes... - there is only Croatian Standard keymap. where is Croatian Programmers keymap? If the problem is security - at least fetchmail supports NTLM authentication so that passwords are encrypted (really encrypted, not just obfuscated) the same way as normal NT workstation does. I fetch mail from Exchange onto Unix server using fetchmail. I have also seen rumors about fetchmail being (having been) ported to Cygwin. I belive, there are some more IMAP clients that support NTLM. But what is actually wrong with OL2000? It is not just as bad; is just because it comes from Microsoft? -andrej
[Cooker] Intstall tonight
Hello, Ok did another install tonight. You need an option to disable the Welcome splash screen on startup as I like to start in text mode with the framebuffer set at 1280x1024 and the splash screen doesn't like that. It gets to the point of setting default font and just hangs there. You also need a way to not install Aurora. It finally loads but sits for a long time at the running of harddrake for me since it is waiting for input about installing the scsi cd-r and scsi scanner Also as I reported before you need to install esound not just the libesounds. Gnome control ceter sound will not set to on without it. I would also like the option to install all the files not listed currently but which I need to do some things. -- Best regards, Robin mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
[Cooker] NFS Install failure with latest cooker file set
Hi, I am having a failure performing a fresh install via NFS. I can't create a boot disk when prompted by the install GUI, also can not generate an AutoInstall floppy and, finally when I re-boot, I get Kernel panic: VFS: unable to mount root fs on 03:06. As I was re-installing, I monitored the error messages on tty3 and tt5, Each time I wanted to create the boot disk or AutoGenerate disk, the message: /tmp/floppy.o: error reading ELF header /tmp/floppy.o: no space left on device also, the message: /tmp/loop.o: error reading ELF header /tmp/loop.o: no space left on device was present. Using a old boot disk, I mounted the hardisk partitions and all things were installed as expected except the initrd in the /boot was missing. After creating the initrd image, reboot-ed and then was working fine. The partitions are formatted for reiserfs. regards Dave

Re: [Cooker] Why do fonts rendered with xfs look SO bad !?
Happened to me too, with Beta 3 install of LM 8. I don't know anything about fonts, or about xfstt vs. xfs. I'd like to hear a step by step solution also. Not just a 'turn off widget-33-2-1234.cc and recompile this other widget.' Also, aRts in KDE 2.1 is not working for me. I can pull up XMMS and listen to audio CDs or MP3's or even .wav's. My Heretic-II demo has great sound. I know the soundcard is functional now. Yet KDE's default sound player (which I *think* is aRtsd) is not running. I've tried slocate arts (and slocate artsd) and I find some documentation but nothing in /bin or /usr/bin that I could run. None of the console commands listed in the aRts FAQ works on my system, and the FAQ just says 'install kdesupport rpm and recompile everything and it will work.' Seems like it's installed, querying rpm database shows that the kdesupport package is installed. My system notifications CAN play through XMMS, so I know that the frame work is working well. Any ideas?? I have an ess-solo1 audiodrive soundcard. >Hello, > >I have always used xfstt. [Cooker] tweaking ppp
Hello, One thing I've noticed with the 2.4.2 kernel, and I haven't tested it yet with 2.4.3, but hope to tonight.. is that ppp is slow.. VERY slow. Looking at the statistics, I get bursts of activity of 1-2 seconds, then anywhere from 10 seconds to 1-2 MINUTES where nothing happens. No data either way. Then another burst, then pause.. The same PPP dial up account does NOT work this in Window. Dialing into the same ISP from windows doesn't do this. Having another computer connected by ethernet dial in under windows with windows connection sharing enabled also doesn't do this, so i'm assuming it's related to either task priorities or pppd. Any thoughts? Vinny

Hello, Our company has just moved over to an Exchange server and the sys admins are being very unfriendly when it comes to giving access to things other than Outbreak 2000 !! Does anyone know if there is a Linux Exchange client out there any where ? Information on this subject appears to be very thin on the ground ! I've come accross things like vCalendar and iCalendar but it appears that M$ don't seem very willing to support these standards (no surprises there then !). Evolution has appointments etc. but will this interface with Exchange (it may well do, but there is no help nor man page with the current Evolution !!!). Thanks, Owen

There are a 3.3.6 works as suggested above. I am currently using it under 4.0.3 without problems but I had to do the following changes. During install it is detected as sis620 but I doubt that it makes a difference as the same driver is used. Try the following: Make sure the default depth is 16bit. I tried 24 bit but got very slow performance although everything was working. Add the following to XF86Config-4 manually under the device section: Option "FastVram" Option "noaccel" Probably these options could be added automatically by XFdrake for the SIS530 Michel

[Cooker] RPMDrake 34 - a step backwards
I have installed the -34 build of RPMDrake and I have to say that I have been quite disappointed with it. First impressions were that it ran slightly slower than recent builds, but I thought this would be a small price to pay if all of my possible upgrade options were listed, as opposed to the limited selection available to me previously. After upgrading, I ran RPMDrake and deleted my old mirror, and both the CD1 and CD2 installation CDs. I then added a new mirror, choosing mirror type 'Cooker' and naming it cooker. I updated the list of mirrors and chose my favorite Swedish server. After the source had updated, I ran out of time and closed everything down. On attempting to go back into RPMDrake, it segfaulted, and I have been able to get nothing out of it since. No amounts of reinstalls, uninstalls or as a last resort downgrading to build 28 have cured this. So - does anybody know what I can do to fix this, and how the next build is progressing? Giles

[Cooker] Installation report
Hardware Motherboard = Tyan 1832DL Processor's = 2xPIII 450 Ram = 256MB Video = Voodoo Banshee Network = Realtek 8139 10/100 Installed from HD after mirroring last night. Last cooker installation was about 6 weeks ago. Choose Expert install. No real problems with installation process, however, two nits. I was unable to type anything in for mount points when setting this up, but had to select from the list. I've got 7 different systems and multiple drives/partitions in this box, not being able to name them what I want wasn't very nice. Also, there is now a prompt about the servers you have selected to install, asking if you are sure. I missed one that I didn't want installed, so I answered no, thinking I would get returned to the selection widget so that I could update the list. Answering no took me straight into the installation, and presumably removed them from the list of packages being installed. Made a boot disk so as not to risk messing up the rest of the machines OS installations. Previous cooker installations did not recognize other OS's and wiped out the existing bootloader. Tested X at the end of setup, all looked good. After rebooting from the floppy, X is messed up in a manner that is hard to describe. Even the login screen is illegible, only parts of it are visible, and most of it is skewed. It's like the worst repaint problem you've ever seen. After signing in to a TTY and starting another X session, KDE came up with the same problems. 90% of the screen items are not drawn at all, and what is drawn is skewed. When trying to run any apps, they appear to lock, or just are never drawn. Tried playing with different X configurations, nothing seemed to work. Frustrated. Installed again, choosing recommended install. Choose X without hardware acceleration this time. No prompt for bootdisk, I'm worried... Upon reboot, LILO doesn't come up, I get 'LI ' and nothing. Boot from previous boot disk. X still hosed, same as before. The bootloader problem I've had with almost every distribution, so I'm not overly concerned with that, but the X problem is new. The system works fine with 7.2, and was working fine with the previous installation of cooker. Ideas?

How can I get beta 3 to see 2GB ram? I tried the append but it only shows 900MB. Do I need to recompile the kernel and where do I find the setting? Thanks -- Ray

grabbed the latest cooker last night and installed no problems. Did a test print during the install but now when I try to print, even with dir |lpr, the system locks up hard. Only way out is a reboot. Greg
Re: [Cooker] new install
I refuse to use Netscape since a telco isp tried to shove it down my throat and wouldnt budge. Konqureor starts out at 14k/bps and gradually rises to a max of 292k/bps after ten minutes. I know it has something to do with handshaking and number of packets received with out error but haven't a clue where to start debugging BTW initialized Gnome, Eazel and evolution got my email going once.
