[Cooker] mplayer-0.90-10
As my Mail-Provider seems to suck I send it again :-) When I installed the recent samba-2.2.8a-5 from cooker on my Computer I got the following problem: Mplayer-0.90-10 needs the libsmbclient.so/libsmbclient.so.0 which is not in samba-2.2.8a-5 anymore, therefore it said it needs samba-2.2.7x, which I found not that nice. There is a workaround, though: make a -nodeps install of mplayer and take the libsmbclient.so from an elder samba (smb-2.2.8a-1 includes it) and put it in /usr/lib, maybe you have to create a symbolic link and name it libsmbclient.so.0; while this works (at least for me) it would be good if we could install the recent mplayer and samba-packages without dependency problems.

[Cooker] Unmounting network shares - weird desktop behavior
When mounting a windows share with the current cooker, a desktop shortcut is created - that seems to work quite well. Right clicking on any of these shares and selecting UNMOUNT however, causes an error message to the effect that only root can unmount a share. The desktop then starts refreshing multiple times per second for about a minute. Has anyone else seen this? Just noticed it recently, as now have the office server back up again. V.

In fact they barely work at all. 2. Another name collision. This version of the kernel replaced the last version, which worked very well for me. I can restore it, at least I think I have the RPM, but this is the second time we have had a name collision in the 2.4.21 kernel releases. This really shouldn't happen. 3. CDROM access is terrible. I haven't been able to get it to mount since the kernel upgrade. The message is mount /mnt/cdrom /dev/hdc: Input/output error mount: I could not determine the filesystem type, and none was specified or mount /mnt/cdrom mount: special device /dev/scd0 does not exist depending on how I try to set up my fstab. This seems to mean that ide-scsi is not working.

Why not, the gnome-control-center also has a randr applet. Go ahead and create a package. I think it is not that easy. It is not that complicated to make a package for it, but to get it working there is some more needed I don't have access to. (kwin/QT/... see README) At least it does not behave like it should here. I can switch resolutions , but the root-window does not change its size. I think it is something for Laurent, isn't it ? attached the README of the app SteffenOk, as more people are beginning to discover the joys of RANDR I'd better explain what's happening. I have submitted a patch to Trolltech for core support of RANDR, which mostly deals with not letting popups go off the screen. I have also written patches for kwin, kdesktop, kicker etc. to get an (almost) completely well behaved KDE+RANDR. However, the patch to Qt will appear in 3.2 and I don't think it's a great idea to have everyone patching their Qts with my version of the patch, unless Trolltech release the official patch beforehand (I haven't asked, you certainly may.) Still, if you are desperate for this then please write to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and I will send you the requisite patches. Also, these patches don't deal with the font sizes being off for newly started apps after a screen change. Probably a Qt issue, which is why I'm letting them deal with it. So, to sum it up, you can use these components but without the additional patches your kicker won't behave, nor will your windows be resized. restart kicker with dcop kicker kicker restart to get by for now. I may put these patches in CVS if there are enough requests, or if one day I get time and inspiration. For now, I would appreciate comments on the UI to the same email address above. Cheers, Hamish.

[Cooker] Mandrake mail server
Hello all, I haven't seen anything recent about Postfix, Openldap, db41, cyrus-imapd sasl2 getting into the Cooker. Was just wondering if anyone is working on this, and what the status is. (Also I think it would be great if cyrus-imapd was moved from contrib to main.) Thanks! S
[Cooker] PLEASE address build/install problems
I've been building and testing cooker systems for over a year, primarily by creating ISOs with MakeCD and burning them. I've tried harddrive and network installs, but they don't work for me (as documented in bug 3295). Recently, as documented in bug 4057, burning ISOs stopped working as well, and a previous comment in this list drew a response that indicates that at least one other person is having the same problem with MakeCD. There's been a lot of traffic on this list about telling people that they'd better report certain problems by a certain point in the development cycle if they want to see the bug addressed in the final release. That's quite reasonable, but it falls apart if the build/install process itself is broken and just stays that way. I entered bug 3295 on March 14 (hd/network installs giving package errors that ISO installs from ISOs burned from the exact same directories do NOT give), and nobody's commented on it but me. After finding bug 4057 (installs from ISOs hang at looking for available packages), I no longer have any way to build or install a Cooker system. This bug showed up sometime between the beginning of June and mid-June. There was another mkcd bug which Warly addressed around mid-June that had made it impossible to build ISO images at all from about June 3 to June 12, so I can't tell when in that timeframe bug 4057 surfaced. I would very much like to continue testing Cooker for you, and I realize that you are short-staffed. If I had never gotten a build to work, I could understand a certain amount of skepticism about bug reports saying my cooker won't work. But that's not the case here. If I can build/burn ISOs which install without problems, yet the exact same directories won't install without problems if I do an hd or network install, then I don't think the problem is in the directories. Likewise, if I have been building/installing burned ISO systems all along, and they suddenly stop installing when I haven't changed my mirroring code, AND someone else is seeing the same problem, the problem isn't in my copy of Cooker. Recent posts to this list indicate that we're coming close to a beta milepost for 9.2, and it is really annoying to not be able to test anything, since I will no doubt hear later on that I should have reported that bug back in whenever. Please take a look at these bug reports and provide some feedback.

Example: our @manufacturers = (N(Canon), N(Epson), N(HP)); .. $gtk-display(N(Here is a manufacturer: %s, $_)) foreach @manufacturers; === moved to === sub manufacturers { return (N(Canon), N(Epson), N(HP)); } .. $gtk-display(N(Here is a manufacturer: %s, $_)) foreach manufacturers(); Please choose any solution to fix printerdrake. Re: [Cooker] konqueror crash and knode prob
Le Sunday 29 June 2003 18:28, Mark Draheim a écrit : there's something wrong with the latest cooker KDE stuff. This is a clean install of todays cooker (well, obviously without the broken kernel). Could someone please confirm that konqueror crashes on this site: http://www.alternate.de/ when clicking on Hardware in the left frame. Konqueror core dumps when I click this. Interestingly, the banner ad that used to be embedded in the page is still open in its own window. I can confirme crash: konqueror: html_baseimpl.cpp:526: virtual void DOM::HTMLHtmlElementImpl::attach(): Assertion `parentNode()' failed. I will try to find why... Next thing: knode's scores are broken. When I choose color I get a text box instead of the color chooser. The color chooser appears when I choose a forth non-labeled entry in the left hand combo box. I will look at it. Regards. Mark

It has to do with the data signature in the usb-storage protocol, where it should send a USBS signature, but it sends an USBU signature. When you connect the device to the computer, the kernel will lock up when hotplug loads the usb-storage module. There's a workaround for this hardware problem. It works great for me, but I'm not sure if it breaks other usb-storage hardware. Could someone from the kernel-team look into this? I will attach a patch that should apply against 2.4.21-pre7-2mdk

If the CD-ROM is empty and supermount is enabled, the CD is tested and takes approximately 1-2 minutes to be recognized as empty before the software manager continues. This can be observed on the CD drive from the light. When this situation occurs, the Software Manager appears to the user to have locked up and becomes unresponsive. The temporary workaround is to have a CD (any CD, including an audio CD, which is what I do) in the drive. The seek on the drive will drp to 1-2 seconds and the software manager will appear to work. I'm not sure where the specific problem lies, but I think it may have to do with the fact that when adding or removing sources (urmpi), all of the currently defined sources appear to be checked. In reality, adding or removing should not check everything else, simply add or remove.

When i delete some files, the files are gone but the space on disk doesn't grow. So if I delete a file from a full disk and try to copy the SAME file onto the disk afterwards, it fails (No free space available). - When I view a diskette with Gnome/Nautilus, eject the diskette, put it in the drive again and click on the refresh-button, Nautilus says, it has no permissions to view the diskette. From this moment, the same message appears also in Konqueror. When I try to access the floppy with the shell, it says cd: /mnt/floppy/: Input/output error. After a restart everthing is fine again. This bugs renders it nearly impossible to use a lot of disks, because after every refresh, a restart is needed. - After I have formatted a disk in gfloppy, I often cannot access the floppy afterwards (no permissions). - When these things happens, there is always one of the following messages while the shutdown: /mnt/floppy illegal seek and umount2: device or ressource busy - is it normal, that df -h shows none as the filesystem? I hope this helps to find the underlying failure. BTW: I also had similar failures with 8.2 on another computer. I have an /etc/host.conf file which has the hosts,bind which I read to tell the system to use the /etc/hosts file first and only then go to the net nameservers. Using ssh , which uses the getaddrinfo routine, with a hostname which is in the /etc/hosts file, getaddrinfo reads /etc/host.conf, opens the /etc/hosts file, and then goes to /etc/resolv.conf and requests the DNS info from the nameservers. If these time out, it then goes back again to the hosts file and gets the address from there. This seems to me to be a silly procedure. In summary, with the hosts,bind entry in /etc/host.conf, why is the getaddrinfo going to to bind to resolv the name, when it is there already in /etc/hosts? Note that gethostbyname() works properly. ( Note that the /etc/host.conf file does have multi on but according to the docs, that should only return all addresses listed in /etc/hosts, not go searching on the net as well.)

Selecting this with the slider is somewhat tedious as I have to use very tiny movements for the mouse. Being able to type it in, in addition to being able to select it with the slider, would be useful. Shouldn't be difficult either, as there's already a non-modifiable text field above the slider, showing the Size in MB:. It should be fairly easy to make this text field into a modifiable text field, and link its value to the slider. (I've done such things in Windows, but am fairly new to Linux.) This is Mandrake 9.1 beta 2.

Running installer in the auto mode. Reached the 'summary' section ... Printer button shows 'CUPS'. Clicked on button, expecting to get the install info about the printer. Instead the printer installer ran and installed the printer??? Leaving me to think what is going on. I expected choices to be presented, not install to take place. Install printer ends with the dialog asking if I want to auto-start the printing system at boot. Select Yes. Asks for CD1, Put in CD1, Click OK, Asks again for __SAME CD1__ Do it again, Asks again for __SAME CD1__ This time click cancel __LOOP__ appears to end. Not clear what is happening. Next ... Dialog asking to auto configure printers, Auto-detect check box selected, Click Next, Dialog box displays, no printers found click Ok, (no printers on system) Dialog asking to auto-detect printers, same as before, ___loops, no end___ Finally click Previous button Summary button list re-appears. Printer button now displays 'Remote CUPS server' The trigger event was to select the printer from the installer summary page button list. Network button on summary page, worked properly, installed eth(0) LAN. At this point proceeded with install. New system runs at boot. Repeatable with my configuration. On first boot the computer hung on the pcmcia module, which did not exist and was not installed at all. After the second boot with the Xircom Realport Cardbus 10/100 + 56k World Modem removed from the slot, the computer booted with a safe mode kernel, to a safe mode gui. I proceeded to force a kernel install from the rpm. rpm -U --force kernel-2.4... I had to do it this way because it thought the kernel was already installed, but /lib/modules was non-existant. I believe this might possibly have to do with an interaction between the pcmcia cardbus modules in the installer and the network configuration scripts. Just a guess. Anyways, I was able to boot and use the computer eventually, but it took a little tinkering on my end that the installer really should have done right the first time! Take a look at it! Thanks guys, I love you product!
