[Cooker] mplayer-0.90-10

2003-07-01 Thread Lavaeolus
As my Mail-Provider seems to suck I send it again :-)

When I installed the recent samba-2.2.8a-5 from cooker on my Computer I
got the following problem: Mplayer-0.90-10 needs the
libsmbclient.so/libsmbclient.so.0 which is not in samba-2.2.8a-5
anymore, therefore it said it needs samba-2.2.7x, which I found not that
nice. There is a workaround, though: make a -nodeps install of mplayer
and take the libsmbclient.so from an elder samba (smb-2.2.8a-1 includes
it) and put it in /usr/lib, maybe you have to create a symbolic link and
name it libsmbclient.so.0; while this works (at least for me) it would
be good if we could install the recent mplayer and samba-packages
without dependency problems.

[Cooker] Unmounting network shares - weird desktop behavior

2003-07-01 Thread Vincent Meyer, MD
When mounting a windows share with the current cooker, a desktop shortcut is
created - that seems to work quite well. Right clicking on any of these
shares and selecting UNMOUNT however, causes an error message to the effect
that only root can unmount a share. The desktop then starts refreshing
multiple times per second for about a minute.

Has anyone else seen this? Just noticed it recently, as now have the office
server back up again.

No, but at 10k it isn't exactly going to increase the rescue image much,
especially since it is statically linked (so it won't pull in any other
libraries).

But, the issue isn't only which editor, but how users find it.

If I think back to the first time I had linux up and running, without X
(ahh, back with RH5.2 ...), the commands I tried in order were something
like:

help (not very useful to get the bash help compared to the help from
dos/Windows)
edit
x
dir
win
xwin
Xwin
setup

So, how about aliasing edit to the editor of choice in rescue mode?

implemented and save a lot of newbies a lot of time)

Anyway, if you have a currently-working non-default-named (ie

Havoc plan to rewrite menu support in GNOME for 2.4.. I think KDE has
now the support for the spec but we can expect some problems between both
systems since these are using different implementations of the same spec.

Ah, ha! Good to know. I had gotten the impression that G2.4/K3.next would
finally be in sync. Unfortunate, but nice to know that it's not quite there.

So, the safest way is to wait until both environment have working
freedesktop.org menu support, and I don't plan to switch Mdk to this
system for 9.2 (also because our menu system is also managing MIME types
and the new MIME spec is not implemented everywhere..)

I hadn't realized that MIME was taken care of by the mdk menus. Huh. Smart

Thanks for the concrete info. Here's looking forward to the others using

1. No /dev/rtc is present on boot. This means software like vmware that some
of us use for running essential tools under that other operating system don't
work well. In fact they barely work at all.

2. Another name collision. This version of the kernel replaced the last
version, which worked very well for me. I can restore it, at least I think I
have the RPM, but this is the second time we have had a name collision in the
2.4.21 kernel releases. This really shouldn't happen.

3. CDROM access is terrible. I haven't been able to get it to mount since the
kernel upgrade. The message is

mount /mnt/cdrom
/dev/hdc: Input/output error
mount: I could not determine the filesystem type, and none was specified
 or
mount /mnt/cdrom
mount: special device /dev/scd0 does not exist

It hangs on Andrea's VM... at the same point as before:

I think it is not that easy. It is not that complicated to make a package for
it, but to get it working there is some more needed I don't have access to.
(kwin/QT/... see README)

At least it does not behave like it should here. I can switch resolutions ,
but the root-window does not change its size. I think it is something for
Laurent, isn't it ?

attached the README of the app

SteffenOk, as more people are beginning to discover the joys of RANDR I'd better explain what's
happening. I have submitted a patch to Trolltech for core support of RANDR, which
mostly deals with not letting popups go off the screen. I have also written patches
for kwin, kdesktop, kicker etc. to get an (almost) completely well behaved KDE+RANDR.

However, the patch to Qt will appear in 3.2 and I don't think it's a great idea to
have everyone patching their Qts with my version of the patch, unless Trolltech
release the official patch beforehand (I haven't asked, you certainly may.) Still,
if you are desperate for this then please write to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
and I will send you the requisite patches.

Also, these patches don't deal with the font sizes being off for newly started apps after
a screen change. Probably a Qt issue, which is why I'm letting them deal with it.

So, to sum it up, you can use these components but without the additional patches
your kicker won't behave, nor will your windows be resized. restart kicker with
dcop kicker kicker restart to get by for now.

I may put these patches in CVS if there are enough requests, or if one day I get time
and inspiration.

For now, I would appreciate comments on the UI to the same email address above.

Cheers,
Hamish.

No, but at 10k it isn't exactly going to increase the rescue image much,

That's right, so let's put it in rescue mode, and make alias from nano/pico to
the e3 flavors.

But, the issue isn't only which editor, but how users find it.

If I think back to the first time I had linux up and running, without X

 like:

help (not very useful to get the bash help compared to the help from

 edit
 x

 win
 xwin
 Xwin
 setup

So, how about aliasing edit to the editor of choice in rescue mode?

(BTW, freebsd's default motd is a good idea ... something that could be
implemented and save a lot of newbies a lot of time)

well, I think we consider that newbies are logged into X, but making the motd

Hello all,

I haven't seen anything recent about Postfix, Openldap, db41,

[Cooker] PLEASE address build/install problems

2003-07-01 Thread Frank Griffin
I've been building and testing cooker systems for over a year, primarily
by creating ISOs with MakeCD and burning them. I've tried harddrive and
network installs, but they don't work for me (as documented in bug 3295).

Recently, as documented in bug 4057, burning ISOs stopped working as
well, and a previous comment in this list drew a response that indicates
that at least one other person is having the same problem with MakeCD.

There's been a lot of traffic on this list about telling people that
they'd better report certain problems by a certain point in the
development cycle if they want to see the bug addressed in the final
release. That's quite reasonable, but it falls apart if the
build/install process itself is broken and just stays that way.

I entered bug 3295 on March 14 (hd/network installs giving package
errors that ISO installs from ISOs burned from the exact same
directories do NOT give), and nobody's commented on it but me.

After finding bug 4057 (installs from ISOs hang at looking for
available packages), I no longer have any way to build or install a
Cooker system. This bug showed up sometime between the beginning of
June and mid-June. There was another mkcd bug which Warly addressed
around mid-June that had made it impossible to build ISO images at all
from about June 3 to June 12, so I can't tell when in that timeframe bug
4057 surfaced.

I would very much like to continue testing Cooker for you, and I realize
that you are short-staffed. If I had never gotten a build to work, I
could understand a certain amount of skepticism about bug reports saying
my cooker won't work. But that's not the case here. If I can
build/burn ISOs which install without problems, yet the exact same
directories won't install without problems if I do an hd or network
install, then I don't think the problem is in the directories.
Likewise, if I have been building/installing burned ISO systems all
along, and they suddenly stop installing when I haven't changed my
mirroring code, AND someone else is seeing the same problem, the problem
isn't in my copy of Cooker.

Recent posts to this list indicate that we're coming close to a beta
milepost for 9.2, and it is really annoying to not be able to test
anything, since I will no doubt hear later on that I should have
reported that bug back in whenever.

Please take a look at these bug reports and provide some feedback.

db4.1 got slipped in last week (didn't appear in my changelog mailbox

We now need sasl2 built against db4.1, then openldap-2.1, then sasl2

I've installed Cooker from network source quite often and it's never
caused any trouble.

Having said that, the most trouble-free way to install Cooker is
generally to install the previous stable release, define Cooker sources,
and urpmi --auto-select to get to current Cooker. Since Cooker is by
definition unstable, installation can never be guaranteed to work, so
it's better to work from a stable base.

much easier to repair on a running system than by booting into
rescue mode. In fact, there are very few problems which aren't
easier to resolve in the comfortable environment of a fully
installed Mandrake Linux system than in this spartan rescue
system shell. Some of the most common problems include:

- bad or missing X (video display) configuration
- adding/removing/reconfiguring hardware
- repairing problems caused by installing third-party software
with the --force and --nodeps options

The general rule of thumb is: If you can boot into the Linux
system without using rescue mode or this CD, there is no real
reason to use the rescue CD.

we won't add large utilities that don't fit the aim of the rescue
(small ones as well, actually).

Granted, but is it unreasonable to request an editor that most newbies
would be able to use (say to fix a corrupted lilo.conf or similar),
which only adds an extra 10k to the uncompressed image size?

 Problems with printerdrake

 [EMAIL PROTECTED] charles]# printerdrake
 N() was called from /usr/lib/libDrakX/printer/data.pm:11 BEFORE gtk2
initialisation, replace it with a N_() AND a translate() later.

Till: the subroutine N() must not be called from gtk2
initialisation. Therefore, defining data structures at the
top-level of a perl module, containing some N(), will break some
translations, we need to avoid that. You have two solutions to
avoid that:

1. instead of calling N(), you call N_() [this subroutine doesn't
return the translated string, it only informs our po-extractor
that the string inside must be put in the po for translation],
and when you will display this string in your GUI dialog, you
call translate(): this subroutine will actually return the
   translated string.

2. instead of defining a data-structure at the toplevel, you put
it in a subroutine, and you call this subroutine to get the
data-structure instead of using it like a toplevel variable
(this solution is usually worse than previous because we end
up with more verbose code). Example:

our @manufacturers = (N(Canon), N(Epson), N(HP));

..

$gtk-display(N(Here is a manufacturer: %s, $_)) foreach @manufacturers;

=== moved to ===

sub manufacturers {
return (N(Canon), N(Epson), N(HP));
}

..

$gtk-display(N(Here is a manufacturer: %s, $_)) foreach manufacturers();

Please choose any solution to fix printerdrake. Thanks!

While adding, removing, or updating sources in the software updater, the CD-ROM
drive is frequently checked. If the CD-ROM is empty and supermount is enabled,
the CD is tested and takes approximately 1-2 minutes to be recognized as empty
before the software manager continues. This can be observed on the CD drive
from the light. When this situation occurs, the Software Manager appears to the
user to have locked up and becomes unresponsive.

The temporary workaround is to have a CD (any CD, including an audio CD, which
is what I do) in the drive. The seek on the drive will drp to 1-2 seconds and
the software manager will appear to work.

I'm not sure where the specific problem lies, but I think it may have to do with
the fact that when adding or removing sources (urmpi), all of the currently
defined sources appear to be checked. In reality, adding or removing should not
check everything else, simply add or remove.

Again, I am not sure, where to put the bug-report, hopefully this category is at
least a little bit appropriate ;-)

I don't know if all of this problem has the same bug as origin, but there are a
lot of similar symptoms:
- if I click on floppy in KDE, Konqueror opens and shows the contents of the
diskette. When i delete some files, the files are gone but the space on disk
doesn't grow. So if I delete a file from a full disk and try to copy the SAME
file onto the disk afterwards, it fails (No free space available).

- When I view a diskette with Gnome/Nautilus, eject the diskette, put it in the
drive again and click on the refresh-button, Nautilus says, it has no
permissions to view the diskette. From this moment, the same message appears
also in Konqueror. When I try to access the floppy with the shell, it says cd:
/mnt/floppy/: Input/output error. After a restart everthing is fine again. This
bugs renders it nearly impossible to use a lot of disks, because after every
refresh, a restart is needed.

- After I have formatted a disk in gfloppy, I often cannot access the floppy
afterwards (no permissions).

- When these things happens, there is always one of the following messages
while the shutdown: /mnt/floppy illegal seek and umount2: device or ressource
busy

- is it normal, that df -h shows none as the filesystem?

I hope this helps to find the underlying failure. BTW: I also had similar
failures with 8.2 on another computer. If I should try anything specific with my
9.0b4-Installation to help Mandrake-team with this bug, just mail me,

Michael

ide/bus problem with hp pavilion 781.se (pentium4 2GHz) very slow with mdk 9.0

I've tried out Mandrake 9.0 RC 2 and 3 and now finally the stable 9.0 on my HP
Pavilion 781.se and something seems to be very wrong with the bus/chipset
drivers. I'm no expert on the matter so that is just a guess.

File access (IDE or USB storage) like copying a number of files, or just
installing some bigger package like mozilla, fills the RAM and the whole system
gets jerky. The mouse doesn't react in X for a few seconds.. releases..
locks.. releases... It's just like as if there were major memory leaks.

After waiting a while, and not using the system, the load slowly and gradually
goes back to normal. Using the command top shows that no swap is used at all
during the process.

I have also seen the problem when burning with the CD-RW drive. The computer was
unusable during the burn process. I have tried with 400 MB swap and 1.2 GB swap.
My RAM is 512 MB. Other hardware info can be found here;

http://www.hp.com/cposupport/prodhome/hppavilion80418.html

Notable is the fact that when I try the Knoppix distribution (live file system
on a cd that runs in RAM, these problems with USB and IDE does not occur at all.
Everything is very fast.)

not the program itself. I grew to like Korn a lot, and would appreciate if this

I read the first tutorial of QT included with the Mandrake 9.0 RC3, and tried to

The qt3 binaries are not in the path (maybe you could add some symlinks ?), and
even when I execute /usr/lib/qt3/bin/qmake (after creating the project file with
qmake -project), I got an error :
[EMAIL PROTECTED] qt]$ qmake -o Makefile qt.pro
QMAKESPEC has not been set, so configuration cannot be deduced.
Error processing project file: qt.pro

I solved that by setting $QMAKESPEC to /usr/lib/qt3/mkspecs/linux-g++/

Next, I must run make : the include directory is not known to qmake, leading to
an error :

g++ -c -pipe -Wall -W -O3 -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe -mcpu=pentiumpro
-march=i586 -ffast-math -fno-strength-reduce -DQT_NO_DEBUG
-I/usr/local/qt/include -I/usr/lib/qt3/mkspecs/linux-g++/ -o qt.o qt.C
qt.C:1:26: qapplication.h: No such file or directory
[...]

Even if I correct it by hand, I have other problems with libs (I didn't figure
out how to solve that one).

Could you please solve those issues ?
Thank you.

The getaddrinfo function within glibc seems to be working badly with respect to
hosts vs dns lookup.

I have an /etc/host.conf file which has the
hosts,bind
which I read to tell the system to use the /etc/hosts file first and only then
go to the net nameservers. Using ssh , which uses the getaddrinfo routine, with
a hostname which is in the /etc/hosts file,
getaddrinfo reads /etc/host.conf, opens the /etc/hosts file, and then goes to
/etc/resolv.conf and requests the DNS info from the nameservers. If these time
out, it then goes back again to the hosts file and gets the address from there.
This seems to me to be a silly procedure.

In summary, with the hosts, bind entry in /etc/host.conf, why is the getaddrinfo
going to to bind to resolv the name, when it is there already in /etc/hosts?

Note that gethostbyname() works properly.

( Note that the /etc/host.conf file does have
multi on
but according to the docs, that should only return all addresses listed in
/etc/hosts, not go searching on the net as well.)

The following lines were recorded by the konsole terminal on my i686 PC

# dmesg -c /dev/null
# tcpdump -i eth0 host 1.1.1.1

# dmesg
eth0: Promiscuous mode enabled.
device eth0 entered promiscuous mode
# ifconfig eth0 | grep UP
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

First, I cleared the kernel messages by calling dmesg -c, and then I
enabled the promiscuous mode of eth0 by calling tcpdump and verified
that bye calling dmesg again. However, the status was not reported by
ifconfig, which should have reported something like
UP BROADCAST RUNNING PROMISC MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

It seems the PROMISC status was not detected bye ifconfig :-(

So did Beta 1. I get an error installing KDEBASE and another error installing
KDEMULTIMEDIA. In both cases your installer tells me that either my CD or my CD
drive are bad. That seems unlikely since I can install other vendors' distros no
problem, and since both beta 1 and beta 2 behave the same way (they both give me
the same errors.)

I was able to get a text-mode install to work, but only for the most minimal -
that is, no GUI - system.

Oddly enough, with the stock Mandrake 8.2 kernel, my southbridge was not
recognized - but I could use the drive with Bios revision 1007 for my
motherboard. (BIOS revision 1011 does NOT work with 2.4.18-6mdk and this
southbridge, however.)

Tried turning off DMA and moving the drive to be by itself on the bus, didn't help.

Put same drive on Promise controller, works fine.

Motherboard is Asus A7V333, Bios 1011.

Hope this helps. Let me know if I can get any other diagnostics for you.

During partitioning, the Size in MB slider should also have a text field so
the user can type in the exact size of the partition. For example, I'm
currently installing to a VM in VMware, giving it 512 MB of RAM. I'd like to
double that for the swap space, for 1024 MB of swap (1 GB). Selecting this with
the slider is somewhat tedious as I have to use very tiny movements for the
mouse. Being able to type it in, in addition to being able to select it with
the slider, would be useful.

Shouldn't be difficult either, as there's already a non-modifiable text field
above the slider, showing the Size in MB:. It should be fairly easy to make
this text field into a modifiable text field, and link its value to the slider.
(I've done such things in Windows, but am fairly new to Linux.)

This is Mandrake 9.1 beta 2.

consider it to be the bug of the installer.

Dialog asking to auto-detect printers, same as before,

Finally click Previous button
Summary button list re-appears.
Printer button now displays 'Remote CUPS server'

The trigger event was to select the printer from the installer summary page

Network button on summary page, worked properly, installed eth(0) LAN.

At this point proceeded with install. New system runs at boot.

Repeatable with my configuration.

On an old Pentium 100 machine (32 Mb RAM) I was able to boot Installation
using 2nd CD of 9.1 RC2 (this is the first release I can do it again since
7.2 !)

Then I switched to CD #1 as asked.

When PS/2 mouse is present Installation is not possible for the keyboard is
inactive. If I remove the mouse and start again from beginning, then keyboard
can be used.
However the left and right arrows are not recognized at the License agreement
screen while Up and down arrows are working. To activate Next choice I had to
use the combination of Alt+Tab keys.
When in choose mouse sub menu I had to use another combination Ctl+Tab to
activate Next area of the screen.

After all Installation failed near then end with the following message :
an error occured mkinitrd failed
an then
Unknown boot loader method
I could not go further and had to stop the installation using Ctl+Alt+Backspace

Selecting most if not all of the workstation related packages, excluding service
such as apache and sql, the installer did not install the kernel modules or
kernel itself.

On first boot the computer hung on the pcmcia module, which did not exist and
was not installed at all. After the second boot with the Xircom Realport Cardbus
10/100 + 56k World Modem removed from the slot, the computer booted with a safe
mode kernel, to a safe mode gui. I proceeded to force a kernel install from the
rpm. rpm -U --force kernel-2.4... I had to do it this way because it thought the
kernel was already installed, but /lib/modules was non-existant.

I believe this might possibly have to do with an interaction between the pcmcia
cardbus modules in the installer and the network configuration scripts. Just a
guess.

Anyways, I was able to boot and use the computer eventually, but it took a
little tinkering on my end that the installer really should have done right the
first time! Take a look at it! Thanks guys, I love you product!

Mandrake 9.1 beta 3:
When changing icon sets under KDE (look and feel--icons), there are several
icon sets that are listed but either are empty or don't work. They are Crux,
Gnome, High Contrast, Large Print and Low Contrast.

Selecting any of the above cause all icons to disappear. Reselecting Crystal or
High KDE brings them back (as Crystal or High KDE, of course).
