An additional difficulty in this instance is that with the radeon

driver does not work.
When that test fails it would be prudent for XFdrake to then suggest the
'universal' vesa driver rather than assuming that the user would know
what option to change.

Also of note is that on my system, in 9.1, with a radeon 9600 when using
the vesa driver the system was still useless unless I also used
vga=normal.

[Cooker] Mandrake Vs. HP Pavilion zd7020 laptop!

2003-10-29 Thread Charles A. Shirley
Hi List!

I have the short term use of a Hewlett Packard Pavilion zd7020
laptop computer!

Of course, the first thing I did was join the club so I could
bit-torrent the 9.2 version of Mandrake. The install went
smoothly, but I note the following problems:

ntfsresize could not re-size the win XP partition. There
was an error about the cluster accounting. I'm sorry, but I
forgot to write down the exact error.

Configuirng the wide-screen display required manual editing of
the XF86Config-4 file. I used the win-XP reported 1440x900
resolution and 60Hz refresh to compute the correct display
mode using the modeline calculator that I found here:

http://www.zaph.com/Modeline/

I used the defaults for everything but the screen's native
resolution.

The sound system does not seem to work properly. When a sound
plays (through the ALSA driver, I have not tried others)
only extremely angry noise comes from the speakers. The
audio system is reported as 82801EB AC'97 Audio
in the Mandrake Control Center.

I have not had a chance to try the DVD+RW/CDRW combo drive as
a writer under linux. ( borrowed 3 discs to write the linux cds
under winxp...)

The 4-way didgital media reader does not appear to work, though
I have not investigated it deeply.

The scroll-wheel touch-pad does not detect properly during
install, but when re-configured afterward it works fine, though
the scroll-wheel is too sensitive in the default condition.

I only have access to this machine for another week! PLEASE
tell me what diagnostics to run, and I will post the results
to the web. This is a nice enough system, that I will
probably buy a similar model, but I thought should get as much
info from it as possible while I could. please advise!

Many thanks!

Only the docs, localization, and most importantly the .lang files.

The lib would be of no use without it as there would be no way for it to

Main is still frozen so no need to expect an 'official' pkg till it

[Cooker] [Bug 6183] [straw] New: Straw problem resolving domains names

2003-10-20 Thread [charles]
http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=6183

   Product: straw
 Component: program
Summary: Straw problem resolving domains names
   Product: straw
   Version: 0.19.2-2mdk
  Platform: PC
OS/Version: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: blocker
  Priority: P1
 Component: program
AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Straw is having a terminal problem which prevents you from using it. Although
you can open the application window just fine. Straw cannot resolve domain
names. (I.e., it cannot turn domain names into IP addresses.)

As a test, I found one website that wasn't using named-virtual-hosting -- namely
www.gnomedesktop.com -- and replaced it's domain name with it's IP address to
see if that would allow Straw to work. And it did. This modification made it
so Straw could pull down it's RSS feed.

(In other words, I changed http://www.gnomedesktop.com/backend.php; to
http://216.120.195.26/backend.php; and it worked.)

So... having said that, it seems that the problem may be related to the adns
package. Or the python bindings to adns. Or Straw's use of those bindings.
 (But that's just a guess.)

[Cooker] screem-0.8.2

2003-10-10 Thread Charles A Edwards

If interested screem-0.8.2-0.1mdk.cae.i586.rpm/src.rpm are avaiable
from my site.

Direct link is http://www.eslrahc.com/screem-0.8.1-0.3mdk.cae.i586.rpm

This release, verses 0.8.1, fixes a few minor bugs, and introduces the
ability to toggle word wrap and set tab spacing.

Also included in my build is a php.lang file which allows for php syntax
highlighting.

 3) the behavior of RPM in this case is strange (it is an RPM not urpmi

It is not strange.

A looked at the posted syslog provides the answer.

At the time the upgrade was done there existed a flux in cooker tree
which required that pam-0.77-9mdk be removed.
When pam-0.77-9mdk is removed it causes system-auth to
to be changed to rpmsave.
When then pam-0.77-10mdk is installed it will create
system-auth.rpmnew, believing that system-auth still exist.

The stated occurrence in an aberration and could only occur under very
limited and specialized circumstances.

Within the past hr I used --auto-select to install 198mb of updates and
experienced no problems in the pam upgrade.
But there was a problem with libtool, as libtool-1.4.3-8mdk was present
in the hdlist but neither libltdl3-1.4.3-8mdk nor
libltdl3-devel-1.4.3-8mdk were.

If the gaim people are so great why did they not code it for the current

For tcl/tk support it requires tcl-8.3 Not the current tcl-8.4.
It will not build with gettext-0.12.

They offer rpms for mdk-9.1 and rh8 and 9 and will probably offer
them for mdk-9.2, but look at the spec they use.
It does not even build the damn language files.

There are always avenues avaiable for those who wish to upgrade apps
beyond that which is included in the distro.
Either building it themselves from source, or by acquiring it elsewhere
from others.
But do not expect it to be added as an update to an already committed
distros release.

Hell, if anyone wants/needs gaim-0.70 that much they are more than
welcome to dl the 9.2/Cooker rpms from my site.
BTW, they Do include the language files and are built to mdk

In the 0.8 branch screem now uses GtkSourceView which does not include
the php language.

It should be avaiable in next release of GtkSourceView, though as of yet
nothing has been yet committed to CVS.

If you wish you can use the attached php.lang
Copy it to /usr/share/gtksourceview-1.0/language-specs/
It may offer more highlighting than what you want but take a look and
see what you think.

To understand if my install exhibits the same as yours can you send a

On the pages and example I have looked at, syntax coloring in screem is
the same as in bluefish using the defaults.

Also of note is that in the 0.6 branch of screem one had the ability to
individually set the colors for syntax highlighting based on the
language being used.
With the 0.8 branch this is no longer true.
Now only the text and background colors can be set all others are
hardcoded,

don't even have (a very good book is online though). That is surely
why NVidia decided to go with this awkward installer, I assume.
I'd say it was easier before, but thanks to Cooker for keeping me

Well, I had a chance to take some time on my nvidia system yesterday.

The problem with the nvidia build results Only If the _up_4GB and the
_smp_64GB are enabled in the kernel build.

As noted in an earlier post there was no problem with nvidia and the -4
kernel but there is in the -5

Notice these excerpts from the changelog

* Fri Sep 5 2003 Juan Quintela [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2.4.22-5mdk

* Mon Sep 1 2003 Juan Quintela [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2.4.22-4mdk
- disable i686-up-4G and p3-smp-64GB until kernel-source get fixed.

To further test and verify this I rebuilt the
kernel-2.4.22.5mdk-1-1mdk.src.rpm with the value for up-4GB and smp-64GB
set to 0.
After installation of the resulting kernel-source rpm, but still running
the stock -5mdk kernel rpm, the nvidia 4496.run built without problem.

They will work in a stock mdk installation if the vesa driver is used.
For mdk versions earlier than the 9.2 beta vga must also be set to

Just curious, why are you not using the 4349.run?

At any rate, though it is not a fix, you might want to give
2.4.22-3.tmb.1mdkenterprise a look.
The ATI fglrx driver module builds with it, and on a system with running
the up 2.4.22-3.tmb.1mdk the NVIDIA 4349.run also builds the nvidia
module without problem.

As an alternate you might try rebuilding the 2.4.22-3mdk without *4GB,
*64GB as they are built by default in the standard mdk kernel build but
not in the tmb kernel.

There is no perl-5.801 it is 5.8.1 and no matter what type of math you

IIRC this is an old type perl error which cause an incorrect

What mirror/mdk-version are you using?
Current mplayer is mplayer-0.91-3
If you say yes it not the latest version among the rpms which
--auto-select will install

If I use --keep, the new libdha and libpostproc are not installed. I
guess mplayer needs rebuilding against them or something?

Both those libs Are a part of mplayer source

Normally because of the lag time between appearance of the mplayer
mdk.rpm and the plf.rpm I usually dl the mkd src.rpm amd rebuild as plf.

Could you see with lsmod on your system if the
dvb-core gets hooked by something that isn't needed for dvb,
 like your network cards...

Good call.

This is from http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/gif.html#venuenote

Unisys and IBM both applied for patents in 1983. Unisys (and perhaps
IBM) applied for these patents in a number of countries. Of the places
whose patent databases we were able to search, the latest expiration
date seems to be Wednesday 7 July 2004 (1). Until then, anyone who
releases a free program for making GIF files is likely to be sued. We
don't know any reason to think that the patent owners would lose these
lawsuits.

(1). We were able to search the patent databases of the USA, Canada,
Japan, and the European Union. The Unisys patent expired on 20 June 2003
in the USA, but it does not expire in most of Europe until 18 June 2004,
in Japan until 20 June 2004 and in Canada until 7 July 2004. We are
still searching these databases for the IBM patent.

Because it causes a lock-up rather than a stall I think it is something

not available (when using a zcip address), and *only* if tmdns can
resolve names of other zeroconf machines.

Please note I haven't installed cooker recently, I will probably
 install beta2 today ...

I complained about it also.
It was 9.1 Beta3 before my DHCP would be properly configured without my
having to manually edit /etc/hosts and forget bout having a networked
printer auto detected with a DHCP host on a home LAN

Prior to 9.1 all I needed to have installed was dhcpd and network and
networked printers were a breeze but now if I want to set-up the network
during installation or even afterwards using drakconnect It Has to
install dhcp-client, dhcp-server and tmdns.

Hell, if nothing else, in the Advanced tab we should at least be given
the option of How we want to have the DHCP connection set-up.

While you are looking at things

Rebuilt from src.rpm enterprise and source with --target athlon

Boot process completly locks at 'Checking for new hardware'.
Cursor stops flashing and remains solid, no hd activity, and no response
from any keyboard combination.

If harddrake is disabled at boot-up then boot completes successfully.

Using kernel-enterprise-2.4.22.0.5mdk and kernel-source-2.4.22-0.5mdk
it is no longer possible to build the ATI fglrx driver
Error:
'No kernel module build environment found'

The driver has built without problem with previous kernels, I have
dropped back to the 0.4 and re-installed its source in order to have the
driver..3200FBS sure beats 275FBS (-:

I am guessing that this is the same type of problem as was caused by the
0.4 kernel when building the nvnet driver.
