Shouldn't the win4lin packages from the original kernel be made available to
for people that have chosen not to upgrade the kernel. As long as the
original kernel is available in the tree, the packages that go with it should
remain available. Although if that .10 kernel is getting pulled because of
the LG business, then the related win4lin packages could be pulled also.
Maybe there needs to be a updates directory for contrib too.

Yes, the initrd link was set up properly this time, although I have lost my
bootsplash with the .21 kernel. I am not sure if it is something I have done
or if it is a packaging problem.

All kernel-related packages in the tree (main and contrib) have been
updated now I think. The tmb and mm kernels have already, and Lenny has
just let me know he has updated the win4lin kernels which should appear
on the mirrors soon.

Maybe there needs to be a updates directory for contrib too.

This has been discussed before, but there was no final conclusion. In
the meantime we are abusing the MandrakeClub mirrors.

I don't think it's a packaging problem, the 3 kernels I tested with (I
didn't have smp or enterprise kernels, so tested the normal, i686 and p3
kernels) all got bootsplash.

You may want to check what
/usr/share/bootsplash/scripts/detect-resolution says ...

Lenny/Warly replaced Thomas' and my contrib kernels with 21.1 versions
(sadly not 21.2 with newer alsa, but well...). I think same will be done

I just made bt open torrents manully, the first one you posted 3.3-1 did this
automatically and i had 3.1.3 at the time. Then i switched to 3.2 and the new
package and it stopped working. Maybe the alpha broke something. doesn't
really matter. i think it's something w/ 3.2 but can't be sure cause i don't
have 3.3-1 to test that theory

[Cooker] kde-3.2-alpha2 for test.

2003-09-26 Thread Laurent Montel
Hi,
I created all kde-3.2-alpha2 for MDK9.2 just for test.
For the moment MDK menu doesn't work.
I reapplyed 50 patchs from 400.
I will apply them after.

There is some update problem:
- kmail, knode, korn moved from kdenetwork to kdepim
- split is not again perfect (so report all split problem please)
- mdk menu not supported
- there is a problem with mandrake-galaxy program it frozes kwin (I don't
know why :( = I add a conflict and uninstall it please before to launch kde)

I ported galaxy theme to kwin 3.

MDK menu entry exists but they don't use by kde3.2

I compile all with --enable-debug=full = -g3

News in KDE 3.2 see http://developer.kde.org/development-versions/kde-3.2-
features.html

Big improvment of kmail/knodes
Support SVG format (static and dynamic SVG)
Add new program:
- kpdf = frontend to xpdf
- ksvg
- kontact see http://kontact.kde.org/
- kopete now it's into kdenetwork
- kwallet gestion of passwd

So report bugs found please.
KDE config bugs please (config upgrade) etc.

Regards.

For the moment this packages is not into cooker, so you can download it from
http://peoples.mandrakesoft.com/~lmontel/kde-3.2-alpha2/

PS: save your config file
PS2: save your mail

BECAREFULL it's package for test .

I will add a conflict with kdemoreartwork-plastik

So as you can see, I ended up forcing them on. It did boot i to kde
(cool splash screen btw :D ), I had a panel and complete desktop
(minus wallpaper), but the most noticable problem was that the mouse
and keyboard were not responsive. So wasn't able to test much. :P I
had rm .kde prior to startx.

after sending original note to list, I then went back and rpm -Uvh
 kdebase-3.1.92-2mdk.i586 kdegraphics-3.1.92-3mdk.i586

the kdenetwork conflicted with kdenetwork-kmail knode

It's right a problem, I forgot to add %version-%release.

 the libkdemultimedia1-noatun-devel-3.1.3-16mdk.i586 didn't go either.

I didn't observe any changes tho.

I originally tried to urpme the old kde packages, but it wanted to
take out so much other stuff that I just urpmi'd it. I hope this is
some help. I'll install a clean cooker system later today minus kde
 for your next round.

Thanks for your report.
Regards.

 thanks,

So as you can see, I ended up forcing them on. It did boot into kde
(cool splash screen btw :D ), I had a panel and complete desktop
(minus wallpaper), but the most noticable problem was that the mouse
and keyboard were no responsive. So wasn't able to test much. :P I
had rm .kde prior to startx.

I originally tried to urpme the old kde packages, but it wanted to
take out so much other stuff that I just urpmi'd it. I hope this is
some help. I'll install a clean cooker system later today minus kde
for your next round.

I guess I should try and handle this in %post though, since it will
afect many people ... but it might be Netraverse's perl script having
problems with a lilo.conf which has been modified since you installed
their kernel.

Maybe I shouldn't obsolete Kernel-Win4Lin3, and just provide it? Then it
wouldn't be uninstalled, but there could be problems with rpm and the
/boot/win4lin link, and uninstalling Kernel-Win4Lin3 later could remove
the link on uninstall (which would also give problems).

 [EMAIL PROTECTED] austin]# lilo
 Added linux *
 Added linux-nonfb
 Added linux-smp

Fatal: open /boot/win4lin: No such file or directory

Hmm, I wanted support for multiple win4lin flavours (smp, up,
enterprise), and forgot they installed them all as /boot/win4lin. But
this entry should really have been removed by the %postun that failed above.

Well, there's no winlin, as there should not be. There shouldn't be a
lilo stanza for image=/boot/win4lin anymore. Unfortuntately you're going
to have to clean up after Netraverse kernel.

Could you remove the entry, run lilo, and see if lilo runs ok, if it
boots etc (and I would also like to know the image names lilo has -
there should be a win4lin-smp and a 2422-10mdkw4l or similar.

Oh sorry, I didn't notice what was happening there. I forgot I had the
official win4lin kernel installed. It may not have been removed becuase I
goofed with lilo.conf a lot and they just used a tag before and after the
entry to remove it. I notice the pre tag is gone but the post is still there,
so it may have been my fault.

I wouldn't worry about it for now.

[Cooker] DrakX resolution test (was: Two glitches from RC1 installation)

There is one. It used to use qiv to be displayed, so didn t show
for very small installs, but since gtk2 it uses gdk IIRC. If ppl
don t see it I guess there s a bug there.

  It uses

/usr/share/mdk/xfdrake/xfdrake-test-card.jpg

which is a sort of hicolor rainbow.

Fixed right now (new mandrake_desk + needs a new DrakX of
 course).

Thanks for the fix -- it never had worked for me in 9.1.

Of course, it's still just a color splash and doesn't do more than show
whether/not XFree is working, not that your resolution is correct.

I attached a proposed solution for this to my bug at:
http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=5314

It's a small but noticeable step of the installation/configuration process.
I don't know if it's possible to get it in 9.2, but I thought I'd at least
propose this change for the future.

Yeah I understand the problem... I think I always did. I was just bringing it
up to see if it has to be done this way. Why can't drakx detect my vgahi card
 and screen and use vgahi?

Because by the time DrakX can do anything (even stage1 or 2), it's too
late. You can't change the framebuffer resolution (AFAIK) once you have
booted (or if you can, at least not reliably). Of course, you could always
ask to have all the XFree86 drivers included, then they wouldn't need to
restrict us to framebuffer X, but that would balloon the size of
everything, and we might as well use Knoppix (or minicd) instead.

In fact, vgahi is not even presented as an option for syslinux. It's like
having a pretty bootsplash is a secret for linux developers only. :-)

You obviously haven't used F2 at the syslinux boot screen ... but maybe
the vgahi description could be moved to the F1 screen?

Actually, it might be worth a bug report, the image looks much worse on
LCD than CRT, the LILO splash screen is dificult to read because of the
 graniness near the spotlighted part.

I'd been meaning to get off my duff and do it for a while. Here it is:

[Cooker] rc1 install test

2003-09-05 Thread Austin
I just installed rc1 on my laptop (finally, been VERY busy lately).

A few notes:

1. There are still not many 'BACK' button in drakx. This is very
frustrating for a user when he screws up.

2. Draksound chose trident() as my soundcard driver, which is OSS. I
thought alsa was the default. If it's not, why is the alsa daemon run
by default?

3. The fonts in all the GTK2 stuff look terrible. Very choppy on my
1024x768 LCD, which is a very common thing on laptops. The 'real' text
mode fonts look fine though.

4. While the 'look' of the splash screen and lilo splash is GREAT, the
quality is HIDEOUS. Again, this is scaled to 1024x768 on an LCD.
There are crazy white lines through the nice blue background. It looks
like plaid almost. Is there no better way to scale the images to
1024x768?

Other than that, all installed smoothly. Good work guys.
Austin

Did you run the vgahi install? I did, and the graphical install looked good
on my 1024x768 (native) LCD.

default is not set by draksound but by ldetect-lst.
there's no global let's default to OSS or let's default to ALSA.

how each chard defautt was done ?
- initially all cards defaulted to OSS
- at every new alsa release, i defaulted new supported sound cards to
  ALSA
- then, on users requests, some cards defaults were switched between
  OSS ALSA (in both directions).

there's not let enforce ALSA or OSS policy, it's more or less let's
see what works the best for end users policy :-)

anyway, since alan cox won't maintain much OSS drivers in the short
term, sound card default drivers may be progressively switched from
OSS to ALSA.

we currently cannot know easily the fb resolution, 800x600 works
everywhere (eg matrox support only 800x600, not 1024x768), ... so we
enforece 800x600 (at least for mdk9.2)

Well, no. I was just testing the installer like Joe User.
Personally I don't care how drakx looks. As long as I can get
basesystem installed, that's all I need.

I'm not sure a digital camera shot will do it justice, but I can try to
post what it looks like.

As I suspected, the screenshots look beautiful when viewed with eog.
So it must just be the way stuff gets scaled/rendered in Drakx on my
screen. Guess there's no easy way to fix that.

Same for the bootsplash screen... the image file jpegs look fine in
gnome, even at 1:1 scaling. Funny it looks so choppy at boot-time.

I'm not sure Pixel will want to spend the necessary time to make
this real. Changing steps in the installer has always been buggy.
It's complicated and not really designed for it. Removing it
completely allowed us to do things like deleting image files for
language selection once language is selected and thus reduce the
risk of no-space-left-on-device when downloading other install
programs during install (xfs formatter etc).

No, it's that the installer uses the framebuffer X driver, so resolution
is dependant on the framebuffer mode, which defaults to 800x600, which
will alias badly on 1024x768 (not so badly on 1600x1200 of course, if
you have the res ...).

Guess there's no easy way to fix that.

There's always a way:
vgahi
at syslinux prompt (does it for me).

(BTW, since we have mostly NVidia cards here, our default network
bootdisk is vgahi ...)

vga=791
(or maybe 792)

Buchan
