Radeon 8500 3D acceleration Xfree86 4.3
Is there any way to get 3d going on the Radeon 8500 Mac edition card, I know for x86 they're available from http://www.schneider-digital.de/html/download_ati.html but I was wondering if it's possible to get 3d acceleration on the PPC in mandrake with the radeon 8500? Thanks, Art [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Almost half the time, it boots then a blank screen when X is suppose to start. I can't go to the console, I have to hard reboot. I think your problem might be the same that I had: It was CUPS crashing in the background while X is already starting. You can check by booting to runlevel 3 (add 3 at the yaboot prompt), where X isn't started automatically to hide the console messages. I finally worked around it by just deinstalling CUPS because I don't need to print in Linux anyway. -Christian
Re: Re: ibook XFree86
Ctl-Alt-Del, indeed but it doesn't work. In fact, even when X is running normally, in gdm for example after a X change, I can't Ctl-Alt-Del. There's no del on a ibook. And it doesn't work with the backspace. May it be the fr_ca configuration ? Where could I change just this shortcut combinaison cause it's hard for my heart to hard-reboot, even if I use reiserfs. Anyway, when I want a console, i use alt-F1, F2, F3. But when X stay blank at boot, those don't work neither. So the keyboard is probably freeze-up too. P. Normally Ctl-Alt-Del, just like a PeeCee. Config XFree86-4 for old ibook and I hope imac
I'm not sure how much it can help people with a imac but here goes my X config for my ibook 366 Usb-Firewire. It has a Ati rage 128 mobility so it should at least work for the regular r128 I think imac has. It worked from 8.2 to the current cooker. I had to switch from r128 (24) to fbdev (16) sometimes depending of Xfree vs kernel but not since few months. I made from the XFree auto configuration with some modifications after. You probably need some modifications to the monitor section. Stew, I remember a thread about to create some kind of database to store working configuration and tips for special ppc model. Is it up somewhere ? Couldn't it help a lot the installation for the fisrt timers and squash down trivial but yet very repetitive configuration bugs and definatively improved scripts ? I know you're alone but if it could spare you're time from repeating x times to tried this or that wouldn't worth it ? I think of some kind of web page table where we could say for the basic stuff. For this version of mdk : (New iso, cooker, 8.2) This model works (Old world, old/new imac, ibook, powerbook, there's not so much in the ppc world) - Xfree (2D, 3D, directly or with this modification ...links... to a text file or a thread) - Pmud - etc... XFree86 on G4 lamp with 8.2/PPC
Has anyone gotten this to run? I just put 8.2/PPC on my G4 and I don't recall if I did it before. I had to jump thru hoops to get it to install with the text install, but when I did a startx as root I got the grey X screen and it completely froze my system. I had to do a hard reboot and got some very nasty fsck errors (at the moment I'm reinstalling again). It uses some Nvidia card (I didn't write down the specs when I examined XF86Config-4 before doing a startx), but it looks like there are some serious problems. I know there are nvidia drivers for x86, do I need something similar for this PPC? I don't *need* X on this machine as I'm primarily going to use it to build packages for Club, but the downside is that without X, I won't be able to test much of what I build. XFree86 Problems on iMac
Hello All, I'm hoping someone can help me out. I'm having major problems getting Xfree86 to startup on my iMac. I've recently been given the Mac and now very little about it (them) being primarily an x86 user. Info I have from /proc, 740/750 CPU at 400MHz with 128Mb RAM. I've just undertaken an install of 8.2 PPC, left the settings as per install and X seems to lockup during startup (certainly all I get is a black screen and a single beep). I've tried various settings in the XFConfig and I still can't get any joy. The machine is still living as I can still connect via SSH and perform a reboot, but I can't seem to recover the inbuilt display. Any help greatly appreciated! Try replacing: Driver r128 Driver fbdev This won't give you accellerated video or anything, but perhaps a usable X. I had those i2c issues on my iMac (rev B/mach 64), on this iteration of the XFree package, and was alternately able to get around it by renaming: /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libi2c.a so it wouldn't load also. font problems with baudens' XFree86 packages
I've downloaded and installed David Baudens' XFree86 packages from: https://qa.mandrakesoft.com/~baudens/ppc/ which nicely fix the DRI issues. However, installing them seems to cause a problem with certain fonts in X. In particular I have noticed that some fonts in my web browsers are stretchedout vertically, or otherwise messed up. Has anyone else seen this? Is it perhaps an issue of having the correct font paths? Thanks, Peter -- Peter R. Wood - [EMAIL PROTECTED] - http://prwdot.org/

My only problem (this is sort of a repeat post, but I never heard back last time) is that I cannot get DRI working to save my life, and it's really important that I do. I tried the new X RPMs that were mentioned a couple of days ago with no greater success. Whenever I start X up, I get an error in which it tries to get the ring handle, but gets back a null value, and DRM chokes with a could not map ring error. This happens in both 16 and 24-bit. Other than that, X works beautifully, and so far as I can tell KDM has no problems on the Radeon TiBook. I tried running in 8-bit, but DRI doesn't support it. If anyone can help, I'd REALLY appreciate it. XFree86/DRI problems :-(
Hi all,First of all, GREAT job with this beta. Works incredibly well. The oneexception to that is that I can't get DRI working on my TiBook (RadeonMobility L6 chip). I keep getting this error:(EE) RADEON(0): [agp] Could not map ring(EE) RADEON(0): [drm] failed to remove DRM signal handler(II) RADEON(0): [drm] removed 1 reserved context for kernelDRIUnlock called when not locked...and I just can't find a way around it. I've tried the new ati.2drivers, which just caused X to crash consistently with an "invalidparameter" error on one of the early module loading attempts. I've alsotried preloading the agpgart and radeon modules, which doesn't changethe result at all. The modules, however, load perfectly. This happensat 16bpp and 24bpp, which are the only bit depths (since I can't do 32)supported by DRI. If someone...ANYONE...can help, I would be forevergrateful, as I really need hardware acceleration for some OpenGL stuff Ihave to do. XFree86-4.2 on older TiBook -- experience
[apologies if you get this twice. it's been a few hours since i first posted it, and it hasn't shown up yet] hi, I just had the following fun experience trying to get the latest XFree packages working on my TiBook (an older one with Rage 128 Mobility). I'm curious about how the kernel-headers package # doesn't match the latest kernel available. Does this matter at all? Also, I corrected for the typo in /etc/X11 with hsync/vsync ... and tried using a backup of my XF86Config-4 that works under 4.1.x ... to no avail. Solution! XFree86 4.1.0 Summary
I compiled a couple of posts on how to configure XFree86 4.1.0 to get it working on a Rage 128. First get the rpm's from the unsupported tree under mandrake-devel of your favorite mirror and type rpm -Fvh XFree* You should get a clean upgrade of XFree86 4.1.0 (at least I did with a clean install from cooker from a few days ago on a Powerbook G3 400 (firewire) Then you need to edit your XF86Config-4 (1) You won't get into X at all w/ a Rage 128 PR, because the r128 driver does not recognize this card - you need to masquerade it as a different (but very similar) card to get it to detect your device. Insert the line: ChipID 0x5046 in the section labeled Device in your /etc/X11/XF86Config and the same config from 4.0.3 should now work in 4.1 (2) Apparently 4.1 doesn't support the XkbModel macintosh - maybe this has been phased out. In any case, what you need to do in this case to have a usable keyboard is run the following as root (I'd recommend putting it in a startup script - /etc/rc.d/rc.local works for me :) echo 1 /proc/sys/dev/mac_hid/keyboard_sends_linux_keycodes and change the line: Option XkbModel macintosh to Option XkbModel pc101 in the InputDevice section of your XF86Config file. And under the Device Driver area add this Option UseFBDev You do not need to set the DefaultColorDepth to 15 anymore. This is a fully accelerated 2-D driver. I am using 24 bits as my default depth. Wow, let me tell you the whole system feels snappier... X was really dragging EVERYTHING down with it. Gimp plug-ins are almost instantaneous now... my powerbook at 400 blows the doors off my Celery at 450. There is no DRI support just yet in the kernel, although some are playing with enabling kernel options to get it working. I don't think anyone's gotten it to work yet. So 3-d ain't there up to now. _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ James O'Malley Altamente.com Business Internet Solutions _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ - Like, if I'm not for me, then fer shure, like who will be? FYI for upgrading to XFree86-4.1 on iMac DV (Rage 128 PR)
I recently tried (again) to upgrade my XFree86-4.0.3 to 4.1 using Stew's kindly provided packages. There are two gotcha's that I noticed - (1) You won't get into X at all w/ a Rage 128 PR, because the r128 driver does not recognize this card - you need to masquerade it as a different (but very similar) card to get it to detect your device. Insert the line: ChipID 0x5046 in the section labeled "Device" in your /etc/X11/XF86Config and the same config from 4.0.3 should now work in 4.1 (2) Apparently 4.1 doesn't support the XkbModel "macintosh" - maybe this has been phased out. In any case, what you need to do in this case to have a usable keyboard is run the following as root (I'd recommend putting it in a startup script - /etc/rc.d/rc.local works for me :) # echo 1 /proc/sys/dev/mac_hid/keyboard_sends_linux_keycodes and change the line: Option "XkbModel" "macintosh" to Option "XkbModel" "pc101" in the "InputDevice" section of your XF86Config file. I believe this is all I needed to do to get things cooking. HTH :) Brice

Besides the two RPMs you list below, you probably need the following as well: XFree86-75dpi-fonts XFree86-100dpi-fonts XFree86-server (XFree86-devel) -- if installed (XFree86-static) -- if installed XFree86-xfs To see all the XF RPMs installed on your system, do something like this: $ rpm -qa | grep -i xfree86 HTH -Brice David C. Using --force just gives you 2 installed versions when I do rpm -q XFree86. What is the best method to isntall these RPM's and get rid of the old XFree86 4.03? Thanks David
Re: Upgrading to XFree86 4.1.0
That is what I done first but it says that several of the other parts of XFree86 need version 4.0.3. I don't know why the whole XFree isn't one package so it could upgrade the whole thing at once. Everything has proper depenancies to make sure you don't have errors. When you try and force your way around that, odds are you're going to break something. If you can't figure out a dependency, post the error message here so somebody can tell you what additional RPM you need. Download the XFree86 packages mentioned below. Them from a command line, ask it to upgrade them. Something like: rpm -Uvh XFree86* If it complains about a dependency, add whatever is missing to the end of the command line, after the XFree86*. Just don't force anything and then complain that it isn't working.. What does the output of this show: rpm -q -a |grep XFree86 Ian On Sun, 15 Jul 2001, David C.
