Back in ancient Egypt, Ja-Kal was a hunter. He had a wife named Tia and a small baby son named Padjet. Rath - the smartest of the Mummies. When he transforms, his armor is like a cobra and he has a long tail. He fights with a sword that can change into a snake. He is able to perform magical incantations. * Now some of the bad guys : Scarab - the evilest villain who is in most of the shows. Scarab is a sorcerer and wants to be immortal. To do that, he needs the spirit of Prince Rapses that is within Presley. He sums up his position well in High Nuhn with: "All I want is immortality. Is that too much to ask?" Like the Mummies, Scarab can also transform. He transforms into armor like a beetle. 3500 years ago, Scarab was the Pharaoh's most trusted advisor and the most powerful person in Egypt after the Pharaoh. He thought he would be the next Pharaoh if Amenhotep had no son to follow him. So Scarab murdered Rapses, and was entombed alive for it. Heka - Scarab's serpent, a cobra, that Scarab carries around like a staff. She seems to be just about as evil as Scarab. She can breath fire out of her mouth. She really lets it out in Good Bye Mr. Cheops. Heka is Scarab's best friend, and Scarab shares his evil plans with her. Ammut - Scarab's dog-like pet. He has the head of a crocodile, the body of a lion and the hindquarters of a hippopotamus. Presley describes him in Pack to the Future with: "That's the ugliest dog I've ever seen." Ammut usually messes up on anything Scarab tells him to do. Ammut has good parts in the shows Pack to the Future and Who's Who. In Egyptian Mythology, Ammut is female. Apep - the Serpent of the Desert. A huge cobra-like beast with an ability to change shape. 3500 years ago, Rapses' grandfather drove Apep out of Egypt and into the desert. Apep is after revenge, and wants Rapses to pay for what his grandfather did to him. Apep appears in Desert Chic, and Pepped With Good Intention. Set and Anubis - Set is a dog-like spirit who is leader of the "Trackers of Souls". He calls himself "Dog of the Desert, Master of Evil, Lord of Thunder". It started on Sunday when Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu -- sliding in the polls toward May 17 elections -- heard that a Barak supporter described Likud backers ``who work in the market'' as ``riffraff.'' The reference appeared aimed at Sephardic Jews of Middle Eastern background who have backed Likud candidates by a 3-1 margin. Netanyahu seized the occasion and made an unannounced stop Monday in a Tel Aviv market. Amid a crush of supporters, Netanyahu told supporters that leftists ``hate the people. They hate the Sephardim, the Ethiopians ... the Russians -- everyone.'' Barak, who condemned the remarks by actress Tiki Dayan, said he would resist attempts by Netanyahu to drag the country into a ``civil war.'' Netanyahu would not back down, and his Likud party ads doctored a video to make it appear as if Barak had laughed at Dayan's comments after she spoke at a Labor party rally. Longtime campaign watchers said the level of invective was unprecedented. ``The word `hatred' has been used massively in this campaign by Netanyahu,'' Hebrew University political scientist Yaron Ezrahi said Thursday. ``It has fanned fires ... in a multiethnic society.'' It wasn't just Netanyahu. Shas, an ultra-Orthodox Sephardic party under siege after leader Arieh Deri was convicted last month on bribe-taking charges, lashed out at the ``elites'' it said framed Deri. One campaign broadcast features a street scene of small town Sephardi Jews saying they ``can't stand'' Ashkenazis, or Jews of European background. ``I wouldn't speak to you if you were Ashkenazi,'' one man yelled into the camera. Another Shas campaign commercial featured elderly Ashkenazi Jews dozing off during a symphony concert and focused on one woman chewing with her mouth open. ``They call this culture,'' a narrator repeated again and again. The party reserved its most venomous rhetoric for Israel B'Aliya, a party of Jews from the former Soviet Union campaigning to wrest the Interior Ministry from Shas. In a radio advertisement, Interior Minister Eli Suissa said Israel B'Aliya was seeking unchecked immigration from Russia and former Soviet republics -- and pledged to keep ``the forgers, cheats, the call-girls and others from entering the state of Israel with dignity.'' Under pressure from Netanyahu, Suissa apologized for the statement on Thursday. ``If my words hurt someone, I apologize, I never intended to offend anyone,'' he said. Emigres from Russia and former Soviet republics -- about 14 percent of the electorate -- are a crucial voting bloc, and Netanyahu seized on a discrepancy between the Hebrew and Russian versions of Barak's biography this week. The Russian-language version quoted Barak as saying that east Jerusalem was ``Arab land.'' -Caveat Lector- Panel: Sales Over Security Pushed By JOHN DIAMOND .c The Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) -- China pressured American satellite companies seeking business in Asia to push for changes in U.S. export laws that eventually helped Beijing secure information useful in improving ballistic missiles, according to a Senate report. The bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee report, set for release today, is sharply critical of both the Bush and Clinton administrations for lax enforcement of export security provisions designed to prevent foreign countries from getting sensitive U.S. technology. A copy of the report was obtained Thursday by The Associated Press. While the report focuses on U.S. missteps, it also depicts China as shrewdly using its considerable economic leverage to bring about policy changes in Washington that opened the flow of technology exports. As far back as the Reagan administration, Washington was prepared to allow U.S. companies to put commercial satellites into space aboard Chinese rockets. Then, in 1989, the Tiananmen Square crackdown in Beijing led to restrictions on U.S. technology exports. In response, ``China actively lobbied U.S. companies that they were losing valuable business opportunities because of sanctions and government restrictions,'' the committee reported. China made it clear that access to a potentially vast market in telecommunications services and equipment ``would be available to companies willing to cooperate.'' Companies such as Loral Space Communications and Hughes Electronics paid China for satellite launch services in part because of lower Chinese prices for rocket launches. But the report says another factor was Beijing's insistence that communications companies seeking access to Chinese markets must use Chinese launch services. The report found that decisions easing export rules by both Clinton and Bush ``emphasized commercial interests over national security.'' Both administrations failed to adequately fund satellite export security teams that would monitor interaction between U.S. contractors and Chinese officials, the panel concluded. The panel said it found no evidence that China has incorporated technology gained from U.S. contractors into its current ICBM force, which predates the policies allowing export of U.S. satellites to China. But the report said revenue from U.S. companies buying Chinese launch services funded improvements in Chinese rockets which were virtually interchangeable for military or commercial purposes. White House spokesman David Leavy said President Clinton has already approved steps recommended by the committee to strengthen security oversight of satellite exports. ``We have strong controls to monitor the commercial satellite launches but we are concerned, as is the committee, that unauthorized transfers could assist China,'' Leavy said. During the Clinton administration, the report said, U.S. contractors conducted detailed technical reviews of Beijing rocket technology with little or no U.S. national security supervision. ``Such (technology) transfer enables the PRC to improve its present and future technical know-how,'' the report concluded. The committee said U.S. officials had access to intelligence reports dating to the 1980s that said China ``has had a strategic, coordinated effort to collect technological products and information from the U.S. government and private companies.'' The report cites two cases now under federal investigation in which U.S. companies helped China improve its rockets after commercial rockets carrying U.S.-built satellites crashed. Hughes provided China with valuable technical information following the 1995 crash of a Chinese rocket. Loral did the same thing the following year after another crash. In both cases, no U.S. government security specialists monitored those contacts to prevent leakage of sensitive technology. Rules for satellite deals allowed China to launch U.S.-made equipment but barred the Chinese from access to the inner workings of the satellites. The space vehicles arrived in China for launch under tight U.S. guard. Similar restrictions and monitors were placed over technical contacts between the Chinese and U.S. contractors. In the Loral case, however, ``certain key facilities were not guarded,'' the report said. ``Classified materials were left unattended (and) security officials did not adequately determine the nationality of foreign technicians working in sensitive site areas.'' Officials at Loral did not immediately return calls seeking comment. Hughes spokesman Richard Dore said, ``Hughes does not believe it was ever in the position of passing on any type of security information or anything that would compromise a national security situation'' to China. SIMPSON .c The Associated Press VATICAN CITY (AP) -- Pope John Paul II will break through another iron curtain Friday when he begins a three-day trip to Romania, the first visit by a pope to a country where Orthodox Christians predominate. Not since the Great Schism of 1054, when the Eastern church definitively split from Rome, has a pope made such a trip. The Vatican is attaching particular symbolic importance to it. ``We are talking centuries here,'' said papal spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls. ``The overused word 'historic' certainly applies.'' The Vatican, with bigger things in mind, has made a considerable concession. John Paul's stay will be limited to Bucharest, the capital, keeping him from Transylvania in the north, where a most of Romania's Catholics live. Romanian authorities feared a stop there could stir up religious passions. But hundreds of thousands of Catholics, made up largely of Romania's Hungarian minority, were expected to reach the capital on special trains and buses to greet the pope during his three-day stay. The trip is part of John Paul's drive for reconciliation among the various Christian denominations with the nearing of 2000, the start of Christianity's third millennium. As John Paul has put it on several occasions, the church ``must learn to breathe again with its two lungs -- the Eastern one and the Western one.'' The Vatican also hopes the trip can open the way to a meeting with Russian Patriarch Alexy II and a possible trip to Moscow. Only 5 percent of Romania's 22 million people are Catholic while 87 percent are at least nominally Orthodox. Tensions between Catholics and Orthodox have come out into the open since the fall of communism, particularly with the re-emergence of Eastern-rite Catholic churches, which retain Orthodox-style liturgy but are loyal to the pope. In Romania, as elsewhere in the Orthodox world, Eastern-rite Catholics are seeking the return of churches and other property that had been given to the Orthodox by the communists. In turn, the Orthodox accuse the Catholics of poaching for converts. Two ecumenical services underline efforts by both sides to show their good will. John Paul will attend a Divine Liturgy Sunday morning presided over by Orthodox Patriarch Teoctist. That afternoon, before returning to Rome, the pope will celebrate Mass in a Bucharest park with the patriarch attending the service. The Romania trip, John Paul's 86th foreign tour, opens up a busy travel season for the pope, who will turn 79 on May 18. He will return to his native Poland for two weeks in June and then make a three-day trip to Armenia in July. An Asian trip is also in the works later this year. Most foreign travel is expected to be put on hold next year, when John Paul will preside over yearlong millennium celebrations in Rome. -Caveat Lector- China Opposes US Shield for Taiwan BEIJING (AP) -- China called on the United States Thursday to exclude rival Taiwan from a planned anti-missile defense shield and not undermine Beijing's efforts to reunify with the island. China fears that incorporating Taiwan in a regional missile shield being researched by the United States and Japan would strengthen resistance in Taiwan to reunification. A U.S. Defense Department report submitted to Congress cited China's buildup of missiles along its southeastern coast facing Taiwan as a reason to consider including the island in the missile shield, called the theater missile defense, or TMD. -Caveat Lector- University Ends Psychosis Study CINCINNATI (AP) -- The University of Cincinnati has dropped psychiatric studies in which patients were given a chemical that may cause psychosis. The announcement Wednesday comes as federal investigators are examining research practices at the university and Cincinnati's Veterans Administration Medical Center, which are affiliated. The university's study that raised concern was a 1997 clinical trial in which 13 patients who were delusional or hallucinating were asked to take amphetamines, which can make the symptoms worse. Giving people chemicals that may induce psychosis -- a severe form of mental illness -- was intended to help researchers learn how psychosis happens, or to test a treatment. Critics complained that people with psychoses severe enough to be hospitalized were denied treatment for their illnesses for five days just to complete the study. Dr. Randy Hillard, head of the university's department of psychiatry, said the amphetamine study was conducted with adequate safety measures. But he said that no more of those studies will be done by his department until critics are satisfied. ``Nationwide, there is enough of a question ... that we will stop doing them until there is a consensus about how they should be done,'' Hillard said. He commented after meeting Wednesday with four Cincinnati-area advocates for the mentally ill. In November, a presidential advisory commission recommended increased protections for people with mental disorders involved in research, including giving family and friends more say in what happens. The National Bioethics Advisory Commission proposed new federal guidelines to try to ensure that people with disorders such as dementia, schizophrenia and delirium are not exploited. Sales in Japan of new cars, trucks and buses fell 11 percent in April from the year before, to 269,388 vehicles, the Japan Automobile Dealers' Association said today. Hardest hit were sales of new trucks, which plunged 15.8 percent to 71,773 vehicles. Car sales dropped 9.1 percent to 196,383, the association said. The government also said household spending was down in March for the second straight month. The average Japanese household spent $2,937, down 1.9 percent in real terms from the same month a year earlier, Japan's Management and Coordination Agency said today. The slip followed a 3.8 percent fall in February that came after a rise in January, when household spending rose 1.4 percent for the largest year-on-year increase since September 1997. The figures are the latest sign that consumer spending -- hurt by a stubborn economic slump, rising unemployment and a wave of corporate job-cutting -- remains weak as Japanese worry about holding on to their jobs. In late April, the government said Japan's unemployment rate in March shot up to yet another record high of 4.8 percent, as corporate restructuring efforts force more people out of work. At least two inspections are planned to clear U.S. suspicions that the communist country may be reactivating a nuclear weapons program frozen under a 1994 agreement with Washington. The agreement called for North Korea to abandon its nuclear program in exchange for two safer nuclear reactors worth $4.6 billion and other economic and diplomatic benefits. The third party' intermediaries involved in such deals have sometimes been non-Israeli Jews working for the Chinese and occasionally even Albanians. Whatever may be their public utternces on the subject of the Middle East, the Chinese privately acknowledge that Israel is in effect an ally in all matters relating to the Soviet Union." McCormack also points out that this secret nuclear alliance between Israel and Red China has been ignored by the mainstream media: "This is a subject rarely touched upon by any writers on Middle East affairs, but such closely guarded contacts as the two Secret Services maintain have bonuses to both sides." Further, according to McCormack: "On balance the Chinese may have gained most from these relatively low-key and cautious exchanges." In other words, Red China was the primary beneficiary of the secret nuclear weapons dealings with our ally, Israel. The "official" story is that Israel's conventional arms dealings with Red China began only in 1979. Uri Dan, writing in the New York Post on March 30, 1997 reported that in 1979 then-Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin got U.S. approval for authorizing Israeli arms dealer Shaul Eisenberg to undertake a $10 billion 10-year deal to modernize the Chinese armed forces thereby "strengthening the counterbalance to Soviet military might." Dan describes this deal as "one of the most important in Israeli history" and that "the Chinese insisted on absolute secrecy." In fact, it was only well after Eisenberg's secret arrangement of the "first" Israeli arms sales to China was set in motion in 1979 that the major media in the West began reporting (without comment) at the revelations of Israel's arms deals with Red China. The first notation of an important arms relationship between China and Israel came in Jane's Defense Weekly, in November of 1984 five years after Israel's "official" entree into dealss with China. Jane's estimated that Israel's arms trade with China might be as high as $3 billion and that Israel's total annual arms exports were approximately $4 billion at that time. This means that by 1984, fully 75% of Israel's arms exports were headed for China which was clearly its primary customer. It was some three months later that the general public heard mainstream media reports about Jane's revelations of the Israeli-Red Chinese arms deals. Families kill young girls who 'disgrace' the clan By Justin Huggler in Sanliurfa, Turkey Rabie Ogur died when her male relatives deliberately drove a tractor over her. It was a killing planned in cold blood. She had dishonoured the family by running away with her lover and when she was dead, the men fired their guns in the air to celebrate. Sevda Gok was only 17 when she was killed by a 14-year-old cousin. He cut her throat in a crowded shopping square. Her crime was to have gone to a cafe in the suspected hope of meeting men. Hacer Felhan was shot dead in her own home at the age of 16. Her 13-year-old brother pulled the trigger. She was killed because a song was dedicated to her on the radio. Her family believed the dedication came from a boyfriend. These are just three of the victims of a bloody tradition that shames Turkey. In south-eastern parts of the country, a woman who has relations with a man outside marriage is considered to have disgraced her family. In the eyes of the community, it is the woman, not the man, who is to blame. And the only way for the family to redeem its collective honour is to kill her. When Mehmet Tamer, the teenager who murdered Sevda Gok, was asked whether he regretted killing his cousin he replied "No, I have cleaned my honour. I wanted to be able to hold my head high." Turkish law condones the so-called "honour killings". The woman's actions are considered a provocation, and murder sentences are shortened. The families make their children into killers because sentences are shorter still for minors. Mehmet Tamer went to prison for just two years and nine months. "I was so scared when I heard about Sevda Gok," says Ayse Gul, a young woman living in Sanliurfa, the main city of the province where most of the killings take place. It was in a central Sanliurfa square that Sevda Gok was murdered. "I went home and asked my brother if he would ever kill me. But he was against the killings: that made me calmer." Ms Gul's head is wrapped tightly in the Islamic headscarf you see everywhere on the streets of Sanliurfa. To the casual visitor, Sanliurfa, once called Edessa, is one of the most romantic cities in Turkey, with its maze of dusty lanes, its ruined castle, and its medieval bazaar where blacksmiths still work by hand. The city is an Islamic pilgrimage site: Turkish Muslims believe that this was the birthplace of the prophet Abraham. But behind the exotic atmosphere lies one of the most conservative societies in Turkey. In the poor, uneducated communities where the killings take place, unmarried women are hardly ever allowed out of their houses. Ms Gul and her friends are sitting in the classroom of a state-run school for uneducated women. Here they are under the state's protection. Even so, they will not give their real names. "If a girl is dishonoured, it's considered the fault of the whole family," explains Ms Gul. "Her brothers can't marry. People say if they can't protect their own sister they won't be able to protect a wife." She tells of one case where a woman married her boyfriend in secret. The woman's father initially forgave the couple and for this, the extended family disowned him. Eventually, under relentless pressure, the man killed his daughter. When a woman is considered to have disgraced her family in this way, her male relatives are ostracised from local society. They are no longer welcome in the crowded all-male tea-houses that are the centres of social life. The decision to kill the woman is taken by a macabre council of death. The men of the family meet in the woman's own house. Often, she is in the next room as they sentence her. The family appoints a young male relative to kill her. In the case of Hacer Felhan, her brother went straight into the next room and shot her dead with a hunting rifle. The mothers often try to save their daughters, and in one documented case a mother was able to prevent a killing. But in another case a mother who refused to tell the men where her daughter was hiding was herself murdered. Ms Gul says it is not only the men who are responsible for the killings. "Most of the time it's the older women of the neighbourhood who force the men to do the killing," she says. "If something happens to the neighbour's daughter the older women talk. Eventually the men are made to act." Society unites around the killers. Sevda Gok was murdered in a crowded square full of witnesses. Twenty people were called to give evidence. Only one man admitted he had seen the incident. Most of Ms Gul's friends are against the killings. But some believe they are justified. "There are some rules," says Merve Taner. "If a woman breaks the rules they're right to kill her." Ms Taner has had her own experience of the restrictive rules. "I

Being a leftie myself, I find that I do better with the written word as opposed to the spoken. Example in my own familly(2 other siblings-males-I am female) where math is the strong point. My 2 brothers have their masters as does our father while, yes I can do math but like you get things "twisted" around. My math has taken the strange twist into genetics. This is the story of how a mild mannered MIT Professor ended up being called before Congress to testify about "selling violence to our children" and what it is like to testify. Where to start? For the past several months, ever since my book, FROM BARBIE TO MORTAL KOMBAT: GENDER AND COMPUTER GAMES appeared, I've been getting calls to talk about video game violence. It isn't a central focus of the book, really. We were trying to start a conversation about gender, about the opening up of the girls game market, about the place of games in "boy culture," and so forth. But all the media wants to talk about is video game violence. Here is one of the most economically significant sectors of the entertainment industry and here is the real beach head in our efforts to build new forms of interactive storytelling as part of popular, rather than avant garde, culture, but the media only wants to talk about violence. These stories always follow the same pattern. I talk with an intelligent reporter who gives every sign of getting what the issues are all about. Then, the story comes out and there's a long section discussing one or another of a seemingly endless string of anti-popular culture critics and then a few short comments by me rebutting what they said. A few times, I got more attention but not most. But these calls came at one or two a week all fall and most of spring term. Then, when the Littleton shootings, they increased dramatically. Suddenly, we are finding ourselves in a national witch hunt to determine which form of popular culture is to blame for the mass murders and video games seemed like a better candidate than most. So, I am getting calls back to back from the LA TIMES, THE NY TIMES, The Christian Science Monitor, The Village Voice, Time, etc., etc., etc. I am finding myself denounced in The Wall Street Journal op-ed page for a fuzzy headed liberal who blames the violence on "social problems" rather than media images. And, then, the call came from the U.S. Senate to see if I would be willing to fly to Washington with just a few days notice to testify before the Senate Commerce Committee hearings. I asked a few basic questions, each of which feared me with greater dread. Turned out that the people testifying were all anti-popular culture types, ranging from Joseph Lieberman to William Bennett, or industry spokesmen. I would be the only media scholar who did not come from the "media effects" tradition and the only one who was not representing popular culture as a "social problem." My first thought was that this was a total setup, that I had no chance of being heard, that nobody would be sympathetic to what I had to say, and gradually all of this came to my mind as reasons to do it and not reasons to avoid speaking. It felt important to speak out on these issues. A flashback: When I was in high school, I wore a trenchcoat (beige, not black), hell, in elementary school I wore a black vampire cape and a medallion around my neck to school. I was picked on mercilessly by the rednecks who went to my school and I spent a lot of time nursing wounds, both emotional and some physical, from an essentially homophonic environment. I was also a sucker for Frank Capra movies -- Mr. Smith Goes to Washington most of all -- and films like 1776 which dealt with people who took risks for what they believed. I had an amazing high school teacher, Betty Leslein, who taught us about our government by bringing in government leaders for us to question (among them Max Clevland, who was then a state legislature and now a member of the Commerce Committee) and sent us out to government meetings to observe. I was the editor of the school paper and got into fights over press censorship. And I promised myself that when I was an adult, I would do what I could to speak up about the problems of free speech in our schools. Suddenly, this was a chance. Y. --[20]-- CHAPTER XX "OIL IS THICKER THAN BLOOD" PEARL HARBOR A ROOSEVELT-ROCKEFELLER-STANDARD OIL VICTORY By the nineteen hundred and twenties the Socony-Vacuum, Standard Oil subsidiaries had gained a virtual monopoly of the market for oil for the lamps of China. It was a monopoly dear to the heart of Rockefeller, of the type he sought to extend to the whole world. Kerosene was sold at prohibitive prices in tiny amounts to fill gift lamps distributed by the Company. But if ever the rich Chinese oil resources were developed such fantastic prices for kerosene even in beautiful tin cans, would be out of the question. It was essential for the monopoly and price structure that no oil be produced in China. The Soongs and the Nationalist Government saw to that. Blunt General Smedley Butler of the United States Mairines, after his retirement roared, "All I ever did for twenty-five years in China is watch Standard Oil cans." All went well until the War Lord of the Shansi province granted a concession to the Japs to drill for oil. The Japs found oil aplenty. This was a serious threat to the Standard Oil monopoly in China. The Chinese Nationalist Government was ordered to seize the War Lord if necessary, cancel the concession and oust the Japs. This was done in 1927. The Japs did not take kindly to cancellation of their oil concession after spending a hundred million yen on it. Nor did they feel kindly toward the Rockefeller. Standard Oil crowd whom they knew to be responsible. They vowed to come back and seize China, if necessary to get their oil. The Japs made good their threats and proceeded to seize China in the first Shanghai incident in 1931. And they did not forget the role played by the RockefellerStandard Oil crowd in the cancellation of the con. cessions. They avenged themselves wherever they went by destroying Rockefeller-Standard Oil property first. An illustration of how far the Japs went in destroying Rockefeller-Standard Oil property is the Panay in. cident. The gunboat Panay was the only representative of the United States Navy in the China Seas. For six years it plied the Yangtze River during the Jap invasions of China but was never molested. Suddenly one day in 1937, the news was blazoned to a shocked world that the Panay had been shelled by the Japs. It has never been told that the reason why the Panay had been shelled, was that it was convoying two Standard Oil tankers. That, the Japs would not tolerate. The efforts of the Rockefeller-Standard Oil group to protect their property took three directions. First in April 1938, within a short time after the Panay incident, they made the Mitsuis of Japan, who with the Zaibatsu dominated Hiroshito and Japan's policies, their exclusive agents in North China and all conquered territory in Asia. This placed the Rockefeller-Standard Oil group in a position to influence Japan's policies. But it has always been a Rockefeller policy never to be satisfied with half a loaf when they can get a whole loaf at no expense to themselves. To accomplish a destruction of Japan, it was necessary to bring the American Army to the rescue of their property in China. But it would have been futile for the Rockefeller-Standard Oil interests to ask Congress to declare war on Japan because it was destroying their property in China. Even their numerous agents in Congress could not afford to vote for a war on such grounds. To avoid committing political suicide, they would have to reply: "Go fly your own kite." If however, Japan could be induced to attack the U.S.that would be a different story. To accomplish this purpose, it was imperative that the American public should have no suspicion of the significance to the Rockefeller-Standard Oil interests of Japan's aggression on China; and they never were told. This was accomplished by Rockefeller's control of the press and other avenues of publication, and the control of every newspaper and news service of importance in the land. Through the Chase National Bank, the Rockefellers control all the Hearst publications and the International News Service; also the United News Service and the Scripps Howard chain. The Associated Press is entirely under their domination. Arthur Hays Sulzberger of the New York Times is on the Board of Directors of the Rockefeller Foundation since rumors have circulated of his sale of the Times to Rockefeller interests. Control of the press is the Rockefeller-Standard Oil practice in every land in which they operate. Thus when they sought the French oil monopoly, they purchased three Paris newspapersLe Matin, Figaro and L'Eclair. Francisco Pinto Balsamão, former Portuguese PM, media baron and frequent attendee of the meetings is listed as the member for Portugal. The security for the Bilderberg meetings, which are held at irregular intervals and prompted by the state of world affairs, is the responsibility of the host country. According to sources in Washington, Bilderberg will pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to reimburse the Portuguese government for deploying military forces to guard their privacy and for helicopters to seek out intruders. Bilderberg have ordered the resort to be shut down for a full 48 hours before the conference. The Bilderberg delegates, comprising some of the world's most powerful decision makers, will be here to discuss highly classified issues which are not supposed to be disclosed to the public by the press before or after the meeting. Initially alerted to this meeting by a New York reader who requested anonymity, The News contacted the Caesar Park Penha Longa resort in Sintra to verify the information that the secret meeting will be held at their resort. The only confirmation we received was that an organization 'wishing for the utmost privacy' would be in Sintra and that the hotel was fully and exclusively booked by this organisation from June 2 to June 7. The agenda for the meeting is said to include a "globilaztion summit", during which nations which cling tenaciously to their sovereign identities will be denounced by its leadership. The principal feature of Bilderberg is that it seeks one global government, (a structure similar to the European Union), while counteracting nationalist sentiment is supposedly its greatest battle. Renewed calls for the United Nations to be able to directly tax all people of the world is said to be another major topic to be tabled for discussion in Sintra. The Bilderberg meetings are only held when and where the hosts can provide the highest levels of security for their guests. All Bilderberg participants, their staff members and resort employees will wear photo identification tags. They will have separate colours to identify the wearer as participant, staff member or employee. A computer chip "fingerprint" will assure the identity of the card's wearer. According to the Washington based investigative newsletter, Spotlight, who claims to have a contact inside Bilderberg, any intruders are to be manhandled, cuffed and jailed and if the intruders resist arrest or attempt to flee, they will be shot. International and national media are said to be welcome only when an oath of silence has been taken, news editors are held responsible if any of their journalists 'inadvertently' report on what takes place. Bilderberg members are immune to all forms of bureaucracy that face ordinary citizens on a daily basis. No visas are required and a free and safe passage is provided by the government hosting the Bilderberg rendezvous. They travel to and from the airport to the resort in armoured vehicles with a police escort. Meetings are said to be held at random intervals, and rarely at the same locations for obvious security reasons. The first Bilderberg conference was held in May 1954, and the organization was said to have been established as a secret and supportive wing of NATO and the Marshall plan which was launched in the 1940s. -Caveat Lector- May 6 1999 OPINION John Laughland 'In spontaneously opening our hearts to these Kosovan refugees, we are opening our country to organised criminality' The announcement yesterday that Britain will receive 1,000 Kosovan refugees every week is excellent news - for heroin addicts, that is. The arrivals from Kosovo are the final link in a chain which connects European users with Central Asian producers. And the conflict in Kosovo is the latest in a series of wars in the former communist bloc fought to seize control of drugs trafficking routes. This war is criminal in every sense. Just as previous wars were fought to control trade routes, whether for oil or other commodities, so this conflict is drug-fuelled. The "ethnic" uprisings which convulse formerly communist states invariably occur at strategically important points on the Eurasian drug route. It runs from the heroin fields of Afghanistan, through the former Soviet Central Asian states, the Caucasus, Turkish Kurdistan and into the Balkans. Eighty per cent of the heroin on sale in Europe now passes along this route. Unlike normal trade, the drugs trade requires paramilitary control to be exercised over territory. Private armies are needed to control land supply routes to Europe. Conflicts in formerly communist countries have an unerring tendency to take place over the mountain passes and ports vital to the drugs trade. The Chechen war in Southern Russia and the Ossetian conflict were battles for control of the main road through the Caucasus Mountains. The Abhkhaz uprising in Georgia in 1992-93, and the Albanian rebellion in 1997, were conflicts over the control of ports. The war in Kosovo is only the latest, most horrific, of these turf battles. The KLA, whose activities are at the heart of the conflict, is an outgrowth of the Kosovo Albanian mafia. These Kosovan criminals operate the most powerful drug-running network in Europe. The Albanian mafia's growth, and involvement in the Kosovo conflict, is the horrific coda to a series of errors. First, the war in Yugoslavia between 1991-1995 disrupted the normal drugs route into Europe. Albanian criminals profited from this disruption. Secondly, the ranks of the criminals have been swollen by former communist thugs deprived of a living by changes in Albania. When Sali Berisha was elected head of Albania's democratic government in 1992 he sacked two-thirds of the secret police force, the Sigurimi. They rapidly decanted themselves into organised Albanian crime networks, just as East German Stasi agents became active in the Russian mafia. Because Albania was now governed by a democrat, these communist criminals concentrated their illegal activities north of the border, in Yugoslav Kosovo. Thirdly, in 1997, when President Berisha impounded 100 speedboats running drugs, illegal immigrants and prostitutes across the Adriatic to Italy, the mafia and the old Communist Party conspired to overthrow him. After the coup, Jane's Intelligence Review wrote that Albania had become "the crime capital of Europe". The mafia-communist seizure of power in Tirana in mid-1997 allowed the KLA to concentrate on expanding its influence further north, and the uprising within Yugoslavia began in earnest in January 1998. Finally, a separate development in the mid 1990s made the need to control the new drugs hub of Kosovo even more urgent than before. In March 1995, the Schengen agreement abolished border controls throughout continental Europe. Schengen conveniently created an entire frontier-free zone on the KLA's doorstep, ripe for exploitation. Albanians now control some 70 per cent of the heroin market in Germany and Switzerland. The KLA's two main offices abroad are, unsurprisingly, in those countries. There are now 2,000 Kosovan Albanians in Swiss prisons serving sentences for drugs smuggling. The new implantation of Kosovan refugees in Britain will give the KLA a new, and unexpected, base for its trafficking here. Not all the refugees, of course, will be drug-runners. But they will be vulnerable to control by them. Cherie Blair, who cried at the refugees' fate, may not have realised that they are also victims of the KLA, which controls the camps. Reports from Macedonia and Albania confirm that KLA "minders" ensure that all refugees peddle the same line when speaking to Western journalists. KLA gangsters rob them of any remaining cash. "After all that has happened in Kosovo in the past months, we cannot discuss the disarming of the KLA," said Jakup Krasniqi, a senior KLA spokesman, in response to the accord reached between NATO and Russia on the shape of future security arrangements for Kosovo. The accord includes a provision for the disarmament of the guerrilla army, which is fighting Serb forces inside Kosovo and along its border with Albania. The KLA seeks full Kosovo independence, not the "autonomy" sought by NATO. "The conditions under which the KLA will agree to disarm do not exist and I do not think they will ever exist in the Balkans," Krasniqi said. "Such a demand is very unjust." Until now, the KLA has largely been discounted in efforts to reach a solution to the Kosovo crisis. On the eve of the NATO bombing campaign, the KLA commanded the support of a relatively small minority of Kosovars, most of whom had shunned the guerrillas' embrace of violence in favor of the pacifist approach of the interim Kosovo government of President Ibrahim Rugova. Barry McCaffrey yesterday told the National Day of Prayer rally in Washington that the White House intends to enlist churches and other religious groups in its latest effort to combat substance abuse. Citing fond memories of his days in parochial school as well as the alleged power of prayer, McCaffrey unveiled the Anti-Drug Faith Initiative, declaring "Never before in our nation's history has it been more important to pray for our young people." The Washington Post noted, "The initiative is one of a growing number of partnerships between government, usually at the state level, and religious institutions." The drug war general declared that the program would "preserve the separation of church and state," since his Office of National Drug Control Policy would only make "suggestions to churches" about the various outreaches they could implement. "McCaffrey has already met with Christian and Jewish leaders around the country to try to start drug programs in their community," added the paper. McCaffrey's announcement was made at the Washington, D.C. rally for the National Day of Prayer forum on Capitol Hill. 400 people crowded into the Cannon House Office Building room, where Shirley Dobson -- wife of Focus on the Family head James Dobson -- opened the event. Press handouts noted that McCaffrey was "representing the executive branch" of government with his appearance at the controversial gatherings. Describing prayer and what he termed "the big S" of spirituality, McCaffrey opined that just as praying had helped soldiers in Vietnam, a generation later it could play a valuable role in the drug war. "Prayer comes before change," he said. "Insight precipitates behavior." "Faith-Based" Social Programs For state-church separationists, McCaffrey's remarks are a disturbing indicator of how far the rage with so-called "faith-based" initiatives and programs involving government and religion has gone. "Partnerships" between government agencies and religious organizations are widespread, and states like New Jersey have even established formal agencies to encourage such relationships. There is little oversight to guard against violations of the establishment clause. McCaffrey's "Faith Initiative" was presaged in June, 1997, when President Clinton signed into law the Drug-Free Communities Act. Gushing about the new legislation, Rep. Rob Portman (R-OH) declared that the legislation would "benefit communities that have mobilized key sectors -- parents, kids, businesses, churches, educators, law enforcement and others -- to reduce teenage drug use." While grants from such programs are theoretically not to be used for religious proselytizing, there is little oversight to ensure that faith-based organizations do not, in fact, use the funding in programs that subtly or overtly meld religious doctrine and "drug war" community efforts. McCaffrey's enthusiasm for prayer, as well as his willingness to share the podium with the fundamentalist-evangelical leadership of the National Day of Prayer Task Force, suggests that this "faith based" initiative could be another step in the goal of putting religious groups on the public payroll. ** Related Story... Blair has No working majority in Scotland after the Scottish elections and will be made to repeal cuts on public services by the Liberal Democrats with whom he must form a coalition. Still, evidence abounds of shifting loyalties in Britain. According to recent polls, roughly two-thirds of people in Scotland identify themselves as Scottish rather than British, a finding that has echoes in Wales and Northern Ireland. In what many people here perceived as the ultimate irony, the British Broadcasting Corp. recently warned its own programmers about using the term ''British,'' because Scots get angry if English soccer hooligans are referred to as British, or referring to Britain as a ''nation,'' since many Scots and Welsh consider themselves nations within the United Kingdom. Yes this has happened so often - we've had 30 years of this. The Times newspaper blasted the BBC under the headline, ''The nation that dare not speak its name.'' BBC recently blocked the opportunity for Scotland to have its own news programme. The success of Labour's campaign and the decline in support for Scottish independence, which polls indicate only a minority would favor, suggest that Mr. Brown's vision is shared by many Britons. Incorrect, the Scottish election shows a slump in labour vote and an increase in the 'National Socialist' vote. Scottish nationalism developed in the 1980s largely out of frustration at the right-wing policies of Margaret Thatcher, whose Conservative Party dominated the British Parliament and, as a result, Scottish policy, even though it won few seats in Scotland.
