Bush Loses Favor, Poll Says, Despite Tax Cut and Trip

By RICHARD L. BERKE and JANET ELDER
The New York Times

Despite his first overseas trip as president and the passage of his
sweeping measure to cut taxes, President Bush's standing as a leader on
both domestic and foreign fronts has diminished considerably, the latest
New York Times/CBS News Poll shows.

Far from giving him a political lift, Mr. Bush's European tour, though it drew
largely upbeat news coverage, did not appear to help him in the eyes of the
public. More than half of Americans say they are uneasy about Mr. Bush's
ability to tackle an international crisis, and more people than not say he is
not respected by other world leaders.

In addition, Mr. Bush's personal appeal — one of his most potent qualities
in last year's election — has dipped to its lowest point since April 2000,
after he was lashed by Senator John McCain of Arizona in the early
Republican primaries.

And, by widening margins, people say they are less trusting that Mr. Bush
will keep his word.

The poll found that a majority of Americans seem disenchanted by what
they view as Mr. Bush's inattention to matters they care most about. And
there is a substantial gap between his stand and theirs on many of those
issues, including the patients' bill of rights, education, energy, the
environment, raising the minimum wage, prescription drugs and judicial
appointments.

Sooner or later, the sheen fades from new presidents, but this poll was
discouraging for Mr. Bush because on nearly every critical measure tested,
he has shown no improvement in recent months — and often has lost
ground.

Mr. Bush's job approval rating, which stands at 53 percent, is down seven
points from March. His standing is similar to President Bill Clinton's at this
point in his tenure. But, unlike Mr. Bush, Mr. Clinton's first months were
marked by far more stinging legislative setbacks and political turbulence.
Still, as Mr. Clinton showed, Mr. Bush clearly has time to reverse his
fortunes.

The nationwide telephone poll of 1,050 adults was conducted June 14- 18
during various stages of Mr. Bush's foreign trip. Its margin of sampling error
was plus or minus three percentage points.

There are similarities between Mr. Bush's predicament and that of his
father. As is the case today, when the elder George Bush was president,
Americans said the country was veering dangerously off on the wrong track
— and there was a widespread feeling that he was not focusing on issues
of import to most Americans.

He scares me and I'm uneasy about his approach to foreign policy, Jim
Carabanas, 57, an independent who was a poll respondent, said in a
follow-up interview yesterday. Mr. Carabanas, a painting contractor from
Austintown, Ohio, added, It's going to take some time until he gets the
experience he needs.

He's surrounded by advisers, but he has the last say, Mr. Carabanas
said. I'm hopeful that somewhere down the line he will be different. Clinton
wasn't perfect either when he started, but he found his way.

Bill Willis, 55, a Republican who manages an automobile dealership in
Paxton, Ill., was more satisfied. So far I'm pleased, Mr. Willis said, I'm
glad I voted for him. I like his character and his honesty. He had a decent
track record of bringing about reasonable leadership. He's not one who
likes confrontation.

Another Republican, Betty Thomas, 62, a retired stenographer from
Buffalo, said, His personality — doesn't inspire a lot of confidence.

He really hasn't taken life too seriously, Ms. Thomas said, and I don't
think he's taken the presidency seriously either. He doesn't seem to have a
lot to say that is specific. I don't think he's going to do much for prescription
drug plans or helping the elderly. He seems to be most attentive to big
business and, in particular, the big oil companies.

Indeed, on energy and the environment, as well as on foreign affairs, Mr.
Bush's ratings are well below 50 percent. His handling of foreign policy is
approved by 47 percent of the public; his stewardship of the environment is
approved by 39 percent — a substantial decline from a month ago. And his
handling of the nation's energy problems is approved by 33 percent.

Respondents were suspicious of the administration's energy priorities
because of links between the oil industry and Mr. Bush and Vice President
Dick Cheney. Nearly two- thirds of Americans, including a plurality of
Republicans, say that Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney are too beholden to oil
companies, and that they are more likely to formulate policies that favor the
industry.

I'm very concerned about the environment and I think he's favoring energy
production over the environment, said Marjorie Green, 54, a Republican
who is a retired lawyer in Satellite Beach, Fla. I think he's very much
influenced by big oil.

A majority of respondents are skeptical that there actually is an energy
shortage. More than 6 of 10 said Americans were being told

Folks--

I don't normally engage in individualistic-type actions, and generally
don't promote them, by I'm going to make an exception to the rule.
Although I got some publicity out of this--see below--that was not my
point: Henry Kissinger was in town, everyone was kissing his ass, and I
just wanted to personally let him know that this one person despises him
and everything he stands for. (Obviously, I'm in a very long line on this
one, but I didn't claim to represent anyone but myself.) I've decided to
resend a message I sent the other night (June 18, 2001) to a friend: if
you think the story deserves retelling, please feel free to pass it on!

Kim

Dear :

Henry Kissinger was in Chicago tonight at the Fairmont Hotel, and believe
it or not, in the Imperial(ist) Room, speaking for the Chicago Council on
Foreign Relations. Well, your's truly scored a ticket. :) (You can, I
trust, see where this is going!)

Unfortunately, I had to listen to his inane talk, but I was cool cause I
didn't want to piss the audience totally off at me. Then they had QA, but
all questions had to be submitted on cards. Anyway, the last question was
(and this was ALL kissy-face shit) that someone had stated that they had
slept well while Kissinger had been in power, and the questioner was
wondering how K slept with Donald Rumsfeld in power? Well, I stood up and
asked his Royalty how he slept at night since he was probably the biggest
war criminal in the world alive today? I pointed out to the audience that
he had killed hundreds of thousands (I started off conservatively) if not
millions in Viet Nam, Cambodia, Chile, Angola, Bangladesh and elsewhere
[note: I certainly meant to include East Timor on the list, but can't
honestly say I remembered to do it]. I said I thought he should be charged
and taken to the World Court in The Hague, tried and if convicted, hung by
the neck until dead. (That Kim, a fucking liberal) And then I
politely sat down. (There was at least one person who clapped.)

I actually got about a 90 section rap out, because I sat in a section
sounded by people, so the security folks couldn't get me quickly--I was all
alone.

Anyway, three security types came up to me, and asked me to leave. Instead
of leaving quickly, I drew it out, blah, blah, and one finally said that
one of them was a Chicago cop. I asked to see his badge, and he showed it
to me, and said I could see his ID outside. Well, after disrupting things
quite a bit, I agreed to go (I was not wanting to be locked up). Anyway,
out in the lobby, I asked to see the cop's ID, which he showed me, but I
again made a big deal out of it. People were leaving around us, and
definitely got to hear more. By that time, a reporter from the Sun-Times
came over, asked if we could talk, and of course, I said, Sure. (Mr.
Modesty.)

So, I lead the S-T reporter and another man over by the escalator, which
the cops wanted me to exit by, and instead of leaving, I held my
interview there, so everyone leaving by the escalator got to hear me
again! She asked me all these good questions, asked me to repeat my
statement, asked me if I'd read Hitchens' articles in Harper's, etc. I
told her I had, but while I wasn't sure about all he said, I told her about
my research about Chile and then I went off on my boy. I explained the
Yamashita principle: Yamashita was a Japanese general in the Phils that
first ordered his men to kill prisoners, and then rescinded them, but was
forced by the US to bear the responsibility for his initial order, and was
hanged. I don't know if it'll make the S-T, or if it does, whether it'll
be cut to shreads, but I did freak some people out. I did not get arrested.

And most importantly, I got to look Kissinger in the eye, and tell him I
thought he was the biggest war criminal living in the world today. While
we were probably 50 feet apart, he heard me. His face went blank.
_

I don't know what impact this had on anyone in the audience: I was so
focused on K that I don't even know what the people next to me said or how
they responded. I did hear at least one person clap in support of my
statement, and I heard one person shout, Throw him out! But I know at
least some people heard me.

Anyway, in today's (June 19) Sun-Times, (p. 6), there was an article on
Kissinger's talk. The editors had cut it down to almost nothing--I thought
the speech was pretty inane, but they only focused on his comments re a
possible Middle East deal, when that was a very small part of the talk.
Then at the end of the article was three short paragraphs (contrast this
with my full account above):

Kissinger's speech was briefly interrupted when a man stood up, called
Kissinger the 'greatest living war criminal' and asked how he could sleep
at night.

[CTRL] Fwd: Religion in Guyana - Cults

2001-06-23 Thread Aleisha Saba

Is it possible that the Rabbi Washington, of the House of Israel brought
about the murder of Jim Jonesnote the same charges against Jones, as
was brought against David Koreshchild abuse, etc., etc., etec.

Seems strange these two were next door neighbors; regardless, when Rabbi
Washington returned to America some years later he was picked up on old
murder charge - Mark Lane of course, escaped through the jungle..to
write another book.

Why has this Washington been given what seems to be special treatment?

Saba

Guyana
Cults

The House of Israel was established by an American fugitive, David Hill,
also known as Rabbi Edward Washington, who arrived in Guyana in 1972.
The cult had no ties to traditional Jewish religion but was a black
supremacist movement. In the 1970s, the group claimed a membership of
8,000. The House of Israel had a daily radio program in which it
preached that Africans were the original Hebrews and needed to prepare
for a racial war.

Opponents of the government claimed that the House of Israel constituted
a private army for Guyana's ruling party, the People's National Congress
(PNC). During an anti-government demonstration, a House of Israel member
murdered a Roman Catholic priest because he was on the staff of a
religious opposition newspaper, the Catholic Standard. The House of
Israel also engaged in strikebreaking activities and disruptions of
public meetings.

Critics of the government alleged that House of Israel members acted
with impunity during the government of Linden Forbes Burnham.

However, under Hugh Desmond Hoyte, Burnham's successor, Rabbi Washington
and key associates were arrested on a long-standing manslaughter charge
and imprisoned.

Guyana acquired international notoriety in 1978 following a mass
murder-suicide at the commune of the People's Temple of Christ, which
had been led by the Reverend Jim Jones, of Oakland, California.

In 1974 the
People's Temple, a utopian commune, leased a tract of land near Port
Kaituma in western Guyana to escape from mounting scrutiny of the group
by California authorities. The government welcomed the People's Temple
in part because of its interest in populating the interior of the
country, especially the area claimed by Venezuela, where Jonestown was
situated.

Members of the People's Temple also became close to PNC leaders, and the
group was allowed to function without interference from the government.
(Saba Note: of what strategic importance was Guyana? To bring the
Rabbi Washington in - a murderer as a next door neighbor? )

Allegations of atrocities by commune leaders and charges that the
commune was holding people against their will led a United States
congressman, Leo Ryan, to go to Jonestown to investigate the allegations
of abuse.

Fearing that Congressman Ryan's report on the commune would bring
unwanted publicity and restrictions on his operations, Jones had the
congressman shot as he was boarding an airplane to return to Georgetown.
The United States immediately asked Guyana to send in its army.

Before the army could reach Jonestown, however, Jones coerced and
cajoled over 900 members of the commune to commit murder and suicide.

(Saba Note: Who murdered Jim Jones and were members of Halle Bopp
Heaven's Gate Cult murdered - so many connections between these murders
from Waco to Halle Bopp, to Jonestown ..)

[CTRL] AM: Bovard: Bootlick FBI Oversight

2001-06-23 Thread MIKE SPITZER

-Caveat Lector-

htttp://www.spectator.org/campaign/bovard/bovard010622.htm

The American Spectator
(Posted 6/22/01)

Bootlick FBI Oversight

by James Bovard

The Constitution has been saved! On Wednesday the Senate Judiciary
Committee held the first of a series of oversight hearings on the Federal
Bureau of Investigation. Committee chairman Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) set
a lofty tone in his opening statement: Our purpose in holding these
hearings is to find ways to restore confidence in the FBI,

not to tear it down. There are many irresponsible critics of the FBI who

promote their conspiracy theories on Internet Websites and in the popular
media.

However, anyone who sat through the hearing would have to wonder which is
more deluded -- the typical anti-FBI website or the U.S. Senate.

The senators supposedly came to discover and proclaim truth. Instead, they
did as they usually do -- they groveled at the mere mention of the FBI and
competed to heap laurels on the heads of federal agents. The only thing
that kept most senators from actually licking boots was FBI Director Louis
Freeh's decision to spurn Leahy's invitation to testify at the hearing.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Cal), in her opening statement, proudly announced
that I went through the Ruby Ridge hearings and I went through the Waco
hearings, which the Senate Judiciary committee conducted in 1995. Her
choice of words is accurate: She had sat there like a potted plant during
those hearings -- except when she made inane comments or sought to impede
other senators from uncovering federal malfeasance.

A big clue that Wednesday's hearing was a farce was the lead-off witness:
John Saint Jack Danforth, Janet Reno's hand-picked special counsel on
Waco. Danforth was his usual pious self, repeatedly assuring senators that
the FBI did nothing dark at Waco. Danforth's remarks stirred no
controversy -- in the committee's view, evidently, there couldn't be
anything dark about sending in tanks in broad daylight to gas young
children.

Senators are anguishing over the need to create a new oversight mechanism
to make double-sure that all FBI agents obey the law. Sen.
Charles Schumer (D-NY) and Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) announced a bill to
create a blue ribbon commission to conduct a top-to-bottom review of the
FBI. Their press release noted that the commission would be made up

of top law enforcement experts. Schumer hailed the FBI as the premier law
enforcement agency in the world and Hatch gushed that the FBI is one of
the finest law enforcement agencies in the world.

It is most ironic to have Schumer and Hatch in the forefront of FBI
reform -- since they were two of the biggest FBI apologists. Hatch
worked mightily in 1995 to block Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA)'s valiant
efforts to conduct an investigation into federal abuses at Ruby Ridge.
Hatch even publicly praised FBI sniper Lon Horiuchi -- who killed Vicki
Weaver as she stood in her cabin door holding her baby -- as a great
American hero.

Schumer was the Clinton administration's point person during the House
hearings on Waco in the summer of 1995. Schumer continually derided and
sneered at any suggestion that the FBI had done anything less than
laudatory during its siege and final assault on the Branch Davidians.
Schumer did more than any other congressman to protect the FBI coverup on
Waco. (During the hearing Wednesday, Schumer congratulated Danforth for
doing a great job with his Waco investigation).

In sharp contrast to all the other committee members, Sen. Charles
Grassley (R-IA) has consistently and courageously pursued allegations of

FBI abuses. Grassley is one of the few Republicans who does not
instinctively cringe and kowtow at any mention of the FBI's name. Nor does
he spend half his allotted speaking time at hearings apologizing for
raising any doubts about the FBI's infallibility.

Grassley derided the notion of appointing an FBI Review Commission. He

noted that the end result of commissions to investigate the FBI has
usually been that the FBI ends up with a bigger budget, more jurisdiction,
and the Director [of the FBI] walks out with a nice pat on

the back.

The same could be said of the response by Congress to most of the FBI
fiascoes of the last decade. After the FBI sent in the tanks at Waco,
Congress provided a hefty budget increase to expand the Hostage Rescue
Team.

(FBI reforms are percolating elsewhere in Washington. Attorney General
John Ashcroft announced Wednesday -- a few minutes before the start of the
Senate hearing -- his plans to create a Strategic Management Council

for the FBI, stocked with plenty of insiders from federal law enforcement.
Also on Wednesday, the House Judiciary Committee passed a bill to create an
Inspector General for the FBI.)

There was scant awareness at the hearing that part of the blame for FBI
misconduct rests on the U.S. Senate -- especially on the Judiciary
Committee -- for its lax oversight. Instead, senators speak as

14 Indicted in Saudi Arabia Bombing

by JONATHAN D. SALANT Associated Press Writer

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) -- Thirteen Saudis and one Lebanese were indicted
Thursday in the 1996 bombing that killed 19 American servicemen in Saudi
Arabia.

A 46-count, 29-page indictment handed up by a federal grand jury charged
the defendants, under the direction of Iranian officials, conspired to kill
U.S.
nationals.

''This indictment serves to underscore the commitment of the Bush
administration and the Justice Department to bringing terrorists to
account,'' Attorney General John Ashcroft said.

''Americans are a high-priority target for terrorists and our nation will
vigorously fight to preserve justice for our citizens both here at home as
well as abroad.''

Some of the 14 are in custody in various countries. Officials declined to
be specific.

The indictment charges that as early as 1993 members of Saudi Hezbollah
began extensive surveillance in search of a U.S. target, settling two
years later on the American military housing high-rise near Dhahran.

Most of the Saudis indicted are young male members of the Shiite branch of
Islam who lived in the eastern province of Saudi Arabia near the Persian
Gulf.

The indictment said they were trained in Lebanon in Hezbollah-controlled
areas and also in Iran.

Ashcroft said the United States is charging that certain unspecified
Iranian figures ''inspired, supported and supervised'' the activities of
the terrorists.

But he said the indictment did not name any Iranians, although the
investigation continues. The attorney general suggested that U.S.
authorities do not yet have sufficient evidence to indict Iranians.

But he did say he was gratified that the Justice Department and FBI were
able to obtain the indictment nearly five years after the Khobar Towers
bombing.

''For the victims and for their families, the indictment filed today means
that next week's five-year anniversary of this tragedy will come with some
assurance to victim family members and to the wounded that they are not and
will not be forgotten,'' Ashcroft said.

President Bush spoke by phone Thursday with Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah to
thank him for Saudi Arabia's cooperation in the investigation, said White
House spokeswoman Mary Ellen Countryman. Bush issued a statement praising
both the Justice Department and the Saudis for their work, saying more
people might be charged in the case.

Bush also offered personal assurances to bombing survivors and families of
the dead. ''Your government will not forget your loss, and will continue
working, based on the evidence, to make sure that justice is done,'' Bush
said.

Those with loved ones among the dead welcomed the latest development in the
case.

''It's (been) five years of pure hell, with or without indictments, that
part doesn't change,'' said Fran Heiser, of Palm Coast, Fla., who lost her
only child, Michael, a 35-year-old Air Force master sergeant, in the
bombing. ''It's nice to see this coming to a head.''

The FBI said the investigation into the blast moved slowly in part because
the Saudi government restricted the agency's access to witnesses and other
evidence. Eventually, FBI agents were allowed to formulate questions and
watch as Saudi authorities posed 212 questions to eight suspects.

Saudi Arabia has yet to disclose its findings in an investigation it
carried out jointly with the FBI.

A recent State Department report on terrorism referred to Hezbollah, the
pro-Iranian group that led the guerrilla war against Israel's occupation of
south Lebanon, as a radical Shiite Muslim group that is ''strongly
anti-West and anti-Israel.''

by JEFF BARNARD
Associated Press Writer

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- A federal judge said Wednesday that he had ''very
serious concerns'' about the basis for an Interior Department decision last
year to give to Indian tribes the 9,300-year-old skeleton known as
''Kennewick Man.''

U.S. Magistrate John Jelderks is hearing arguments in a lawsuit filed by
eight scientists who want to overturn the decision.

Then-Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt gave the remains to five Columbia
Basin tribes for burial based on their oral traditions that they have
always
lived on their homelands, which are near where the skeleton was found.

The decision was based on the Native American Graves Protection and
Repatriation Act, which requires that ancestral remains be returned to
tribes.

At Wednesday's hearing, Jelderks expressed frustration that the tribes do
not have a story in their oral traditions that specifically identify the
remains of what they call ''the Ancient One'' as an ancestor.

Christopher Burford, attorney for the Umatilla tribes, said while the
tribes
have no stories mentioning a warrior who died on the banks of the Columbia,
tribal histories mention people surviving a flood in the Columbia Plateau
that covered all but the tallest mountains. Geologic evidence shows the
only
flood of that magnitude in the area came 13,000 years ago, thousands of
years before the Ancient One lived, making him part of their group.

The bones, bearing a stone spear point in the pelvis, were discovered in
July 1996 in an eroding bank of the Columbia River at Kennewick, Wash.
Citing the Indian burial law, the Army Corps of Engineers awarded the bones
to the Colville, Umatilla, Yakama, Nez Perce and Wanapum tribes.

The scientists want to study the skeleton to see if it represents some
unknown source of migration to North America apart from the traditional
theory of people walking from Asia across a land bridge to North America.

''We're talking about something that could change our understanding of the
way the world was populated,'' lawyer Paula Barran said.

Based on preliminary study, scientists figure the bones are the remains of
a
hunter in his 40s with a prominent nose and heavily muscled legs whose
physical characteristics more closely resemble people from Polynesia and
Japan than American Indians.

Jelderks said there were several ways to interpret the federal law on
whether it requires proof of a direct link between a set of remains and a
modern Indian tribe.

''I have very serious concerns about the expansive interpretation the
secretary put on the statute,'' Jelderks said.

The judge said he would issue a ruling in several weeks.

Attorneys for the tribes urged Jelderks to bear in mind that the intent of
Congress was to give American Indians who die the same respect afforded the
bodies of non-Indians.

''The starting point for analysis is that there is no unfettered right to
study the bodies of dead people,'' said Walter Echohawk, a lawyer for the
National Congress of American Indians. ''The only exception to that is
American Indians, and Congress has closed that hole.''

Last year in a similar case, the Bureau of Land Management decided the
9,500-year-old skeletal remains called Spirit Cave Man should not be given
to American tribes.

Spirit Cave Man was discovered 60 years ago in western Nevada. The mummy
was
wrapped in tulle mats and a fur robe, and using the textiles as evidence,
the bureau concluded Spirit Cave Man was not affiliated with any
contemporary tribe or gro

Instead of punishing the Scouts for discriminating against
homosexuals, communities and groups like the United Way should applaud
the Boy Scouts leadership for its efforts to protect boys from child

[CTRL] NM: Streisand: Energy Conservation for Thee but Not for Me

2001-06-23 Thread MIKE SPITZER

For the story behind the story...

Streisand: Energy Conservation for Thee but Not for Me

A day after left-wing looney Barbra Streisand decided to go public with
recommendations on how to solve California's energy crisis, a
representative said she didn't intend to follow her own advice.

She never meant that it necessarily applied to her, explained
Streisand's spokesman to the New York Times Wednesday.

Despite the Hollywood mega-star's decision to flout her own energy
guidelines, Streisand's Web site, where her Call to Conserve manifesto
appeared over the weekend, remained unchanged as of Wednesday afternoon.

As the weeks progress and our energy crisis worsens, I find myself
wondering why the citizens of California have not been called on and
encouraged to play our part in helping deal with this problem, the
way-out warbler opined.

While our elected officials are trying to ease this crisis, the people
of California need to remember the positive impact that energy
conservation can have.

Folks should cut back on use of their computers and air conditioning,
she says, and avoid using clothes dryers.

Try to line dry as much as possible, the millionaire singer advised.

Just don't look for the former Funny Girl star to start drip-drying
her own pricey designerwear by draping it from her chandeliers.

Still, the blatant hypocrisy didn't stop Streisand from invoking the
memory of the late JFK to sell her energy pitch.

A call to conserve must be issued to Californians just like when
President John F. Kennedy called on the citizens of America with his
words, 'Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do
for your country.'

At least Barbra is willing to meet Kennedy halfway. She's happy to do
the asking - but the actual doing will be up to others.

Professor Who Lied to Give Up Course

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (AP) -- Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Joseph J.
Ellis, who made false claims in classes and interviews that he served in
Vietnam, will give up the American culture course he teaches at Mount
Holyoke College.

College spokesman Kevin McCaffrey said Tuesday that Ellis, 57, chose to
give up the class.

In a brief statement, Mount Holyoke President Joanne V. Creighton
expressed regret about Ellis' misrepresentation, but stopped short of
criticizing him. She did not say whether Ellis would be disciplined for
the deceptions.

''I too deeply regret the effect of his misrepresentation on students,
colleagues, and the public,'' the statement said.

Ellis apologized for the Vietnam misrepresentations after The Boston
Globe disclosed Monday that he had falsely claimed to have served in
Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Division. He also had claimed in
interviews that his experience in Vietnam motivated him to join the
anti-war movement.

Creighton and Ellis both refused to be interviewed.

Ellis also taught a course on the literature of the Vietnam War at
nearby Amherst College. Three students there told the Globe that Ellis
talked about his Vietnam experiences in that class.

The Amherst class is not scheduled for the next academic year.
Amherst officials have not commented on Ellis' misrepresentations in
that school's classrooms.

Ellis won the Pulitzer Prize in April for his book ''Founding Brothers:
The Revolutionary Generation.''

[CTRL] ADG: Why Huckabee must be grateful to Hale

2001-06-23 Thread MIKE SPITZER

-Caveat Lector-

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
June 13, 2001, Wednesday

Why Huckabee must be grateful to Hale

By: Gene Lyons

Anybody can understand why Gov. Mike Huckabee would be grateful to
convicted
embezzler and Whitewater con man David Hale. He's more responsible than
anybody apart from Kenneth Starr for Huckabee's becoming governor of
Arkansas.

Nor do I particularly care whether Hale serves another lousy three weeks in
state prison, although I don't buy Huckabee's rationalization about Hale's
bad heart for a minute. Arkansas penitentiaries are filled with AIDS
patients who are costing the state a fortune. The governor is not commuting
their sentences.

Besides, to hear Hale tell it, he's been at death's door for going on eight
years now. That is, ever since the day in July 1993 that FBI agents, acting
on behalf of U.S. Attorney Paula Casey, seized the records of his federally
subsidized lending company, Capital Management Services. Soon afterward,
the
Arkansas Insurance Department began probing Hale's looting of a
state-regulated burial insurance company, the crime for which he was
finally
convicted last year. The state investigation preceded Hale's unproved and,
indeed, unfounded Whitewater allegations against the Clintons by several
months.

You know those 600 or so letters, e-mails and phone calls Huckabee's genial
spokesman Jim Harris says Huckabee's office has received on Hale's behalf?
Well, here's what Harris didn't mention. Like the campaign to commute
Hale's
sentence in the first place, most may have originated from a creepy
right-wing Web site called NewsMax.com. The inimitable Chris Ruddy, a
journalist best known for a series of articles, books and videos pushing
the loony idea that Vince Foster was murdered as part of a White House
conspiracy, is taking personal credit for Huckabee's decision, which he
calls a big victory for NewsMax readers.

On January of this year, writes Ruddy, I wrote of David Hale's plight
and
asked our readers across America to telephone, write and e-mail Gov.
Huckabee to give Hale clemency. We were the only media outlet to do this.
If sent to prison, Ruddy warns, Hale could have become another Jim
McDougal. In Ruddy World, see, poor McDougal, too, fell victim to the evil
Clinton machine. He didn't die because he'd been mortally ill for years,
nor
even, as Susan McDougal believes, because Starr's prosecutors reneged on a
promise to let him do his time in a prison hospital. No, Bill Clinton must
have done him in.

Politically, Ruddy continues, it is not the easiest thing for Republican
Huckabee to have given Hale this commutation. Arkansas is a state in which
Bill and Hillary Clinton continue to have enormous power. The media
outlets,
few as they are, have been supportive of the Clintons and for years have
raked David Hale over the coals. The Arkansas media believed that Hale, by
telling the truth about the Clintons' wrongdoing, made Arkansas look bad
before the rest of the country. Some people in Arkansas would have
preferred
to keep Bill and Hillary's dirty linen in the closet.

Needless to say, Ruddy's knowledge of the Arkansas press is slim. This
newspaper catalogued Hale's allegations against Democrats at encyclopedic
length. His shady loans to Republicans got little space. A recent
Democrat-Gazette editorial claimed that Clinton apologists and kneejerk
clinton-oids resented Hale because he ratted on the former president.

In the real world, Hale had no business ties whatsoever with either
Clinton.
He couldn't furnish a single document with Bill or Hillary's name on it.

His tales of secretive meetings and phone conversations were cast in
classically vague con-man terms. Without dates and times, they were
impossible to disprove, allowing gullible journalists and partisan
prosecutors to believe anything they found convenient.

Jurors in the 1996 trial of the McDougals and Jim Guy Tucker were unanimous
in telling reporters for The New York Times and ABC's Nightline that they
hadn't believed a word Hale said about the Clintons.

How the same jury convicted Tucker on Hale's say-so is an enduring mystery.
Documentary evidence against the former governor was shaky at best, and
Starr's bad faith ought to have been clear from the number of charges
against Tucker for which prosecutors presented no evidence at trial.

Hale had manipulated and defrauded many business partners, including his
former mistress, who successfully sued him after he swindled her
grandparents out of the family farm. On cross-examination, he was forced to
admit that he'd even testified falsely to the judge who signed off on
Starr's plea-bargain deal.

Another mystery: Where did all the money go? Altogether, Hale embezzled
more
than $ 2 million from the Small Business Administration through sham loans
to bogus companies whose only business was siphoning taxpayer funds into
his
pocket. U.S. District Judge Stephen B. Reasoner ordered Hale to pay $
290,000 restitution. So where's the rest of it?

[CTRL] CT: The only scandal was this hearing

-Caveat Lector-

[ I do not know enough about this case to have an opinion, but this is an
entirely different slant on it ... ]

Chicago Tribune
June 17, 2001 Sunday
CHICAGOLAND FINAL EDITION

The only scandal was this hearing

By: James Warren.

Indiana's cantankerous Rep. Dan Burton was unavailable to chair the House
Government Reform Committee for personal reasons Friday. His Republican
colleague, Christopher Shays, wasn't so lucky.

With Burton's beaming portrait hovering over him, Connecticut's earnest and
politically moderate Shays stepped in to oversee a four-hour hearing of
such
dispiriting ignominy that he can knock on wood it went virtually uncovered
by media. It thus might not filter back to constituents in leafy Greenwich
or New Canaan who are possibly concerned about basic fairness or efficient
use of their tax dollars.

The hearing was titled The Use of Prosecutorial Power in the Investigation
of Joseph M. Gersten. It was, Shays explicitly opined at the start, a case
study of how prosecutorial zeal to achieve a preordained conclusion
appears
to have resulted in the suppression of obviously exculpatory facts.

What it proved to be was a mountain of innuendo and hyperbole that so
crumbled in the face of facts that even Shays would come mercifully close
to
disavowing the very staff report that prompted the session. If the panel's
majority GOP, especially its apparently dogged staff, have a sliver of
shame, they might ponder a) visiting a parish priest, b) getting loaded on
a
vat of grain alcohol, or c) taking brief unpaid leaves of absence.

It was that bad.

The fittingly unseemly background to Friday's legislative misadventure
involves Joe Gersten, a once-prominent Miami-Dade County politician who
left
the country in 1993 after a drugs and sex scandal and his defeat for
re-election as a county commissioner.

The scandal was prompted by Gersten's filing a report with police that his
blue Mercedes-Benz had been stolen one evening from in front of his house
in
a nice Coral Gables neighborhood. But the next day it was found in the
possession of two prostitutes and a pimp, who had the correct car keys--and
Gersten's wallet, gun and briefcase, with nude photos of a man.

That didn't make sense to the cops, because the three were not the sort to
be found in that neighborhood. In addition, they had pawned Gersten's gold
necklace, sports jacket and slacks, which he had bought early that evening
at a dry cleaner (now there's a full-service cleaner!).

When other elements were thrown in, it became clear that Gersten's claim of
car theft was an attempt to hide from his fiance and others the truth: that
he had been in a distinctly different part of town and had been fleeced at
a
crack house while with at least one prostitute.

But Gersten declined to answer questions, and a warrant was issued to get
him to talk about his theft report. And while prosecutors realized that the
four witnesses to Gersten's apparent crack house foray were all slimeballs
and would make bringing a case on solicitation of prostitution unlikely,
they wanted to talk to him.

In what for prosecutors was an unrelated matter of no consequence, a
15-year-old witness suggested that Gersten might have been involved in a
recent murder. But he recanted that claim within 90 minutes.

Hit with a contempt of court citation, Gersten fled to Australia and
portrayed himself as a victim of prosecutors, including the chief
prosecutor
in the county at the time, one Janet Reno.

His saga has convinced some Australian media, if not the courts, which
again
last week spurned his attempt to gain refugee status and thus allow him to
stay permanently. And he has seemingly conned a combination Sydney
doctor/human-rights activist who came to Washington and convinced Burton
that Gersten's was a tale of injustice.

As Senate Democrats are being reminded, there's power in majority status,
like spearheading investigations. Burton became notorious during the
Clinton
years for what appeared to be wild goose chases. Those included pursuing a
belief that White House lawyer Vincent Foster had been murdered--one reason
Democrats claimed that interest in Gersten surely reflected apparent animus
toward Reno, who is mulling a run for Florida governor.

The Republican majority staff report, which has been available for many
weeks on www.house.gov/reform, is a screed, even if conceivably
well-intentioned. It could stand as a testament to the need for government
reform. The notion that it may dwell on Web sites ad infinitum,
unchallenged
and with even prudent readers not realizing its awful flaws, inspires
dyspepsia.

It concludes that law enforcers purposely ignored significant exculpatory
information in their investigations of Gersten; failed to investigate the
attempt to frame Gersten for murder; that the local state's attorney
appears to be engaged in an ongoing effort to withhold significant
information from Congress; and that local bar associations should look
into

only mention of paedophiles (non-gendertype)
only mention of children (non-gendertype)

anyone scared of homosexuals interfering with children in their care are
deluding themselves about the real problem.
anyone scared of their children turning homo cause of influence of

will be led to believe it is ok to be gay so that if they do feel that way
they are more likely to feel unashamed about expressing it.
incidentally is this a true conservative or a liberal standpoint to have?
any comments?

and the real argument might be nature or nurture? if nature then the above

Church Policy

An Introduction to Child Protection.
With everything that is happening world wide it is important that every
organisation takes the necessary steps to protect the children and young
people who are entrusted into their care.

Under the Children's Act 1989 (UK) we all have a responsibility for the
well-being of children. How can the church take up this responsibility? In
the following document I hope to give you some thoughts and information that
will help.

Let us start by asking two questions:

1. Who are we seeking to protect?

First and foremost the children in our care, second, people working with
children and third, the organisation.

2. Who are we seeking to protect the children from?

Anyone who would abuse. This includes the attentions of paedophiles (a
paedophile is someone who is sexually attracted to children). I am told
paedophiles are not normally opportunist and will go to the extent of taking
several years to gain a position of trust within an organisation, and, from
this established position, abuse. With this in mind, a child protection
policy is the best form of protection we can offer our young people. A
paedophile who is looking to target a church will think again where there is
a pro-active policy and action taken on every allegation.

Every church should, therefore, have stated guidelines for the operation of
all ministries and projects where young people are involved and a policy to
deal with any allegations of abuse. If church leaders are not pro-active in
their efforts to protect children in this way then they are negligent in
their duty. Some church leaders see their responsibility only in terms of
reacting in certain ways once a situation has occurred, this is like closing
the stable door after the horse has bolted. Only here we are not talking of
livestock, but people's lives that can be damaged in the most hideous ways
imaginable. We need to move the emphasis away from abuse and towards
protection, the aim is to prevent abuse happening, rather than only getting
involved once damage has been done.

If you are a member of a church, ask your leadership what their stated
policy is for the protection of children. Don't be satisfied with anything
less than a recognised policy. Remember we are all responsible for the
well-being of children.

Re: [CTRL] More of Gay Pride

2001-06-23 Thread Nessie

-Caveat Lector-

A person on this list who had run out of posts for the day responded
privately to something I said on the subject a day or two ago. I think
some of what I said in private is worth repeating in public here. I’m
not setting up a straw man here. This exchange really happened. I’m just
protecting the privacy of the person, as I’d do for any of you. I never
reveal my sources.

But I think the rest of you also might be interested in what I said. I
hope so, anywayy. Some of you really, really need to hear it from
somebody.

So here’s an excerpt:

***

This person wanted to know why “they emphasize their sexuality to the
exclusion of everything else”

So I said:

I’m not sure who you mean here by “they.” If you mean individuals that
you know personally, you should ask them, not me. If you’re talking
about images in the media, you should be aware that the media distorts
reality for economic reasons. There is a vast gulf between what we see
on TV and real life.

Some of them refuse hide who they are, I say good for them. Think of it
as ethnic pride. Not all Gay people partake in Gay culture, but those
who do, and show it off in public, are no different that African
Americans who wear dashikis during Kwaanza or Irish Americans who wear
green on St. Patrick’s day. The desire to display pride in who your
People are is a natural part of the human condition. Everybody does it.
People define who “their People” are differently, that’s all. To some
it’s an ethnic thing, To others, it all about which language they speak.
To some it’s a matter of nationality. To some it’s sexual orientation.

Keep in mind, though, that not all Gay people partake in Gay culture.
The majority are “passing.” You yourself almost undoubtedly have Gay
friends and don’t know it.

Let me tell you a little something about passing. As you’ve probably
guessed by now, nessie isn’t my real name. My real name is a fairly
generic Irish name. There are even a couple famous people who share it.
It used to be preceded by “O’” but when my family came here in the last
century, they dropped the “O’’’ because that was the best way to get a
decent job. So I come from a long of passers. I know what I’m talking
about. Passing is as American as sleeping on Indian graves.

I have a pretty good friend who’s bisexual. He says it’s like being a
Black Puerto Rican. As long as you shut up, nobody knows who you really
are. When he told me that, I suddenly understood. It’s all about
choosing to pass or not to pass. Most people are lazy, They take one
look at you and assume they know who and what you are. They never
bother to actually find out. It’s too much effort. If a Gay person
doesn’t want you to know, you don’t know. And they are everywhere.
Everybody who has more than a handful of friends had Gay friends,
whether they know it or not. If they don’t know it, it’s their own
fault.

Except for Jews and Africans, nobody but Gays have caught more flak here
for being who they are than the Irish. But eventually, people got used
to the idea that we might act a bit strange about some things but we’re
damn handy to have on the team. So we don’t have to pass anymore. For
the most part, this has also happened to Jews and Italians. Now it’s
beginning to happen to Africans and Asians. It’s high time it happened
to Gays, too. Gay people have contributed to American culture and
prosperity to a degree far out of proportion to thier numbers. Give them
credit where credit is due.

As a life long American, I can’t speak for other cultures, but from what
I hear, it’s pretty much the same wherever. Gay people give more to
every society in which they live (i.e. every society on the planet) than
they get back. It’s time we gave them back a little. At the very least
we ought to show them the common courtesy that we show each other. They
have as much right to be proud of who they are as you do. Respect that
right. Don’t be so boorish as to insult them in public. And don’t insult
them in front of me. That’s some of my personal friends you’re
insulting. How’d you like it if I insulted your personal friends in
public?

There’s a lot of stuff on the tube right now about Gay life because it’s
Gay Pride week. It’s like the run up to St. Patrick’s Day. Every March
we see endless reruns of Finnian’s Rainbow, The Hanging Gale and the
Brothers McMullen. But nobody on CTRL bemoans the “pro-Irish bias” of
the media that week. What’s up with that?

This person also expressed concern that the media was exposing children
to sex before they were old enough to be responsible enough to handle
it.

As a parent myself, I feel qualified to address this. I’ve been fairly
promiscuous by American standards. I’m fairly promiscuous by American
standards. I’ve always had open relationships. I’m in one now. To me,
recreational sex is a past time. It’s what I do instead of take drugs,
collect stamps or surf. I never tried to hide my sex life from my kid. I

Atrocity bodies come back to haunt Serbs

http://www.guardian.co.uk/yugo/article/0,2763,510931,00.html

A lorry load of the dead is just part of the evidence emerging of how
Belgrade hid Kosovo's dead

Special report: war crimes in the former Yugoslavia

Nick Thorpe in Belgrade Friday June 22, 2001 The Guardian

The butcher's lorry in the photograph is nondescript and painted white.
Still visible on the driver's cabin is the name of Pec, a town in western
Kosovo. Dragged from the river Danube, its front wheels are still in the
water. The credit for the photograph reads: Serbian ministry of
interior. This is the refrigerator lorry that brought the remains of 86
Kosovan Albanians to Serbia in April 1999. On its way to an undisclosed
destination, for the disposal of the bodies, it broke down. Concrete
blocks were hurriedly loaded in with the bodies, and the container was
sunk in the river. But those responsible underestimated the strength of
the river and the insulation material on the inside of the container.

They even forgot to deflate the tyres. The truck soon came bobbing to the
surface. Local police hauled it ashore, and in the course of that
operation, the back doors burst open, to reveal the gruesome cargo.

These bodies were immediately declared a state secret. Now they have been
unearthed from a mass grave beneath a police shooting range in a Belgrade
suburb, Batajnica. Hardly a day goes by without new details being
published in the Serbian media of this case, and others.

The 86 bodies, including those of women and children, are believed to be
ethnic Albanians from the village of Suvareka in western Kosovo, not far
from Pec. Soon after Nato bombing raids began on March 24 1999 - against
Serbian targets and in defence of the ethnic Albanians - these people were
rounded up by Serbian special police and locked in a pizzeria. Hand
grenades were thrown in through the windows.

At the end of that month, according to the Yugoslav interior minister,
Dusan Mihajlovic, the then president, Slobodan Milosevic, told senior
police officers, state security, and army top brass to remove evidence of
war crimes from Kosovo in case the province ever fell into Nato hands.

According to the media reports now surfacing in Serbia, lorry loads of
bodies, some already buried once in Kosovo, were removed and taken to
locations in Serbia for secret reburial.

Yesterday's edition of Vreme, a Serbian news weekly, contains the
testimony of a driver now said to be under the witness protection scheme
of the UN war crimes tribunal in the Hague. He says he made 10 journeys in
a truck issued to him by the army, in March and April of 1999, after being
called up as a reservist.

Soon I realised I was driving dead people, he said, adding: It was
clear to me. It was not clear to me where they were ending up.

He drove to the copper smelting complex in Bor, in eastern Serbia. There,
he believes, the bodies were incinerated or buried in a disused shaft.

Human rights groups in Belgrade say they believe that the remains of up to
2,000 Kosovan Albanians may have been moved to Serbia.

The interior minister has mentioned a possible figure of 1,000, buried at
three sites so far - Batajnica, where exhumations are under way in the
presence of forensic scientists from the war crimes tribunal; Petrovo Selo
in eastern Serbia; and an unnamed third location which media speculation
suggests may be near the river Drina, on the border with Bosnia. The
Albanians claim 4,000 people are still missing.

Film of the Batajnica mass grave has been shown on state television. Arms
and legs are clearly protruding from the earth. One of the drivers has
said that about a third of the bodies in one of his loads were naked. And
that they included women and children.

The revelations have shocked the Serbian public deeply.

One positive aspect is that this danse macabre cannot be described as
some kind of patriotic action, said Dejan Anastasijevic, a journalist at
Vreme. The transport of bodies cannot be dismissed as one of those 'ugly
but unavoidable things that happen in every war' - the usual excuse for
atrocities.

The latest opinion poll, published yesterday, showed
that 46% of those asked believed Slobodan Milosevic
should be extradited to the Hague - the first time a
majority has supported such a move.

The mainstream press and the gay community have both treated the emergence of Pink

right-wing cause of gun ownership?

The Pink Pistols are less a new phenomenon than a new twist on something very old --
persecuted minorities protesting attempts to deprive them of the means to defend
themselves against violence.

This is a fascinating article (with dozens of great links) on how gun laws - even
those with neutral intent - always end up targeting blacks, homosexuals, the poor,

Immigrant Crime: Who Wants To Know? - David Walsh
http://www.vdare.com/misc/walsh_interview.htm

Immigrant Crime: Who Wants To Know?
By David Walsh

Recently, while exploring the incidence of immigrant crime and its impact
on the US, I was stymied. Not by the dearth of information: it’s there if you really
want it. What was troubling was the lengths to which people who rely on such
statistics (here, gang investigators and the INS) will go to avoid discussing them.
Some officials were fearful, some indifferent, others seemed to question my motives.
It all seemed to mirror the big media’s tendency to skirt the issue.

Richard H. Ward, Dean and Director of the Center of Criminal Justice at
Texas’s Sam Houston State University (and an ex-NYPD detective), recently published an
interesting study in Criminal Justice 2000 called “The Internationalization of
Criminal Justice” about the importation of crime: narco-terrorism, street crime and
gangs, home invasions, credit-card and staged-accident scams, identity theft, and
white slavery.

“Globalization,” Ward observed in his introduction, “is producing ... new
challenges for criminal justice practitioners and researchers To the law
enforcement community, particularly at the local level, global crime is frequently
linked to illegal aliens” (now officially recorded as entering the US at a rate of
some 25,000 each month, and probably far higher in actuality). At the same time,
“criminal activity by ... legal immigrants ... has grown considerably.”

Despite this, though, the watchword in the States is… accommodation.
Police, intelligence agencies, the courts, parole officers, social workers, and health
professionals—as well as Americans at large—all must accustom themselves, it seems, to
immigrant crime.

The dimensions of the problem loom so large, Ward suggested, that even
basic American freedoms may be abridged in the name of the greater good. What most
caught my attention in his article, though, was a passage having to do with
disincentives to investigation and enforcement.

Some of these already hobble the police and the INS. “In areas with large
immigrant communities,” Ward found, “political pressure is frequently applied to
discourage immigration authorities and law enforcement from ‘searching out’ illegals.”

In an interview with Prof. Ward, I asked about this statement—a
confirmation of something long suspected though rarely discussed in the media. He
began by suggesting that several factors are at work here.

“Over the past decade, in many cases from a criminal justice standpoint
[officials] have stepped back and said, ‘Hey, we’re just not going to look at this.’
(Immigrant crime, that is.) “It’s a sign of the times; the feeling, you know, that
everybody makes mistakes [like crossing the border illegally?], and there’s an
unwillingness to apply more law enforcement.” In a further reflection of current
thinking, Ward added, “‘Let’s not cause any problems for our neighbors (and trading
partners)--particularly Mexico.’ He declined to be specific, but suggested that
officialdom exercises - quite properly - an overweening caution in discussing the
matter.

Yes, but although it’s clear that only a minority of newcomers is involved
in crime (“less than one-in-ten,” Ward guesses), aren’t We The People entitled to know
the extent of it?

Well, no—that’s not politically feasible. “There is no way to sort out the
numbers of foreign criminals,” Ward says. “That would take raiding sweat shops and the
like, and that gets into how far you should go.” (To liberals, of course, the very
term “raid” is ominous.)

Then, of course, there’s the ultimate question:

Why bother to study immigrant crime, anyway? Even with upwards of fifteen
million illegals in the US today, “very few people care - as long as there are jobs.”

When I suggested to Prof. Ward that this laissez faire attitude towards
foreign crime was shared by our government, he agreed with me. “That’s probably a good
word. Unemployment is so low in the United States that very few people are paying
attention An example is the large numbers of Asians, especially Chinese illegals,
who no one [in the criminal justice system] seems to be paying much attention to.”
How come? Oh—“They’re not much involved in crime, or it’s Chinese-on-Chinese crime.”

In any event, Ward said, the crooks melt into the immigrant community
where they’re sometimes sheltered, but in any case untracked by police, INS, or other
authorities. Unnoticed or not, Ward estimates that over 100,000 Chinese alone are
smuggled into the country every year. Invariably, they end up as “slave laborers” for
the Triads, or Chinese mafia.

Mexico: The next Lebanon?

By Joseph Farah © 2001 WorldNetDaily.com

We've all heard and read the reports recently about how the Mexican government is
actively promoting illegal migration into the United States – even providing survival
kits to those intending to cross the Rio Grande and make their way to the promised
land.

Mexico makes little or no effort to police its border with the U.S. It minimizes the
threat the refugees pose to the United States. It even suggests its overflow
population should be welcomed into the U.S.

Therefore, a recent news item originating in the San Diego Union-Tribune was something
of a shocker for several reasons.

Mexico's National Security Adviser Adolfo Aguilar Zinser made the sensational
announcement that Islamic terrorist organizations have a presence along the U.S.
border and may be making contacts with Mexican guerrilla groups.

We have evidence that organizations or people linked to Islamic organizations could
have a presence here or be passing through, Aguilar told a local radio program.
Though declining to identify the specific groups, he also said the groups could have
indigenous guerrilla ties.

The announcement was not intended to alarm U.S. authorities, but rather to quell fears
in Mexico about the possibility of guerrilla attacks.

Our duty is to find them and send [them] away from the country so they don't put
roots down here or try to use our territory as a haven, he explained.

While Aguilar wouldn't name names, the newspaper El Universal and other Mexican
dailies did. They said the Islamic militants trying to form a base of operations in
Mexico are tied to Hezbollah, the Syrian and Iranian-backed terrorists who established
a base in Lebanon and have used it ever since to launch rocket and guerrilla attacks
on Israel's northern border.

And, despite the reassuring words of Aguilar, the Mexican media reports make clear the
true purpose of the Islamic terrorists in the country – to carry out guerrilla
activities in the United States. But even Zinser acknowledged the potential threat to
the U.S.

The geographical proximity with the United States puts us on alert so that we are not
the passing-through point for any of these organizations, he said.

Because this report got little media attention in the United States – and next to none
in areas far from the border – it is safe to say this is an issue not on the radar
screen in Washington. But it's clear to me that the Islamic terrorists currently
focusing their attention on destroying Israel are taking their fight to what they
consider the ultimate enemy – the Great Satan of the United States.

Let me tell you, folks, this is not an enemy the U.S. Border Patrol can handle.

There's been debate in a few circles lately about whether it's time to use the U.S.
military to stem the flow of illegal immigration into the U.S. from south of the
border. I've never been one to suggest the U.S. military needs more deployments. It is
already vastly over-deployed. And there is always a civil liberties threat when the
U.S. military deploys on domestic soil.

But the one true objective of the U.S. military – the one defined by the U.S.
Constitution – is to defend the borders of the country.

Personally, I think this is a much more sensible deployment than those in Macedonia,
Bosnia, Kosovo, Haiti and dozens of other remote places the U.S. acts as policeman of
the world.

Meanwhile, as our troops patrol borders in these and other countries, our own borders
are as porous as a sieve.

The illegal immigration into the United States in recent years has had devastating
effects on the infrastructure of our country. It has been a demoralizing factor for
millions of Americans – especially those who live closest to the problems.

But all that is nothing compared to the horror and anguish that Americans will
experience when the first truck bomber makes it across the border and delivers his
load at a vulnerable U.S. target. It's nothing compared to the terror Americans will
experience when the first airliner is blown out of the sky by hand-held, guided,
American-made Stinger missiles from south of the border – or north. It's nothing
compared to the anger Americans will experience when Katyusha rockets start hitting
American cities the way they routinely hit Israeli towns in Galilee.

Sound far-fetched? With so little attention on Mexico, it could well become America's
Lebanon.

Anarchists plot medieval warfare at G8 summit

FROM DAVID LISTER IN GENOA

ANARCHISTS preparing to disrupt next month’s G8 summit in Genoa are threatening a seaborne assault of up to 4,000 protesters and a medieval-style attack using catapults and battering rams to smash through a ring of steel in the city centre.
The Italian hardline movement known as the Tute Bianche — the White Overalls — is using training camps in Milan and Genoa to teach its members how to fight police and to march in tight columns using homemade shields as protection from baton charges.
It said yesterday that British anarchists from the Wombles organisation were expected to be among up to 10,000 people who will try to force their way into the meeting.
The Tute Bianche intensified its plans after police in Gothenburg helped to keep rioters in check this month by placing metal freight containers around the Swedish city, stopping them from reaching the summit of EU leaders.
The anarchists are preparing to use battering rams to force their way past similar obstacles in Genoa and are building giant catapults to hurl objects such as dead fish and paint at police, according to the city’s newspaper.
They will carry ammunition in wooden “siege carts” and will try to catch teargas canisters in large nets. They have been told to offset the effects of teargas with lemon juice on their faces and by washing their eyes with water.
Protesters have been trained in marching in turtle formation, a method used by the Romans, in which the front row of an advancing column raises its shields vertically while those behind hold them over their heads. Other training includes advice on how to remain calm and defence against baton charges, according to witnesses who have attended the camps.
Luca Mondo, one of the camp teachers, said: “We will do whatever we have to to get into the summit and to stop it from happening. When the police start hitting us, we will go on pushing them and we will be enough to pass through. I believe the real violence will be by the police.” Last weekend, at a lake near Milan, the group simulated an attack on Genoa’s port using canoes, rafts and tyres. “There will be 3,000-4,000 of us in the water,” Signor Mondo said.
The Tute Bianche is part of a coalition of more than 700 anti-G8 protest groups called the Genoa Social Forum, which is hoping that nearly 100,000 demonstrators will be in the city for the summit during July 20-22, compared with 20,000 who travelled to Gothenburg this month. Most protesters are expected to be peaceful. Demonstrations will begin with a protest by immigrants and will include sit-ins.
Up to 20,000 police and troops will be deployed, as opposed to 2,000 in Gothenburg. They will be backed by 15 helicopters, four aircraft and seven naval boats. The city will be closed to the outside world and separated into an inner red zone, off limits to demonstrators, and an outer yellow area, where they can hold protests.
There has been speculation that President Bush may be based on an aircraft carrier, but the White House said that it was looking at the possibility of staying in cruise ships provided by the Italian Government or in an hotel in the red zone. One reason for concern about security is the apparent lack of communication between the Centre Left city council, which welcomes the demonstrators, and the local prefetto, the Chief of Police appointed by the Interior Ministry. The council has virtually no role in the security preparations and the only public officials under its control who will be on the streets are the city’s traffic wardens, who are permitted to carry guns but rarely use them. By contrast, the prefetto is responsible for the civil police as well as the carabinieri, a military division of the police that ultimately is accountable to the Defence Minister. Both will be on the streets in force during the summit. Italian troops are likely to play a support role. Copyright 2001 {HYPERLINK "/section/0,,97,00.html"}Times Newspapers Ltd. I think there is no doubt in my mind that he (Sharon)
is indictable (as a war criminal) for the kind of

Professor Richard

MID-EAST REALITIES © - www.MiddleEast.Org - Washington - 6/23:
Ariel Sharon has pressured British Prime Minister Tony Blair to reverse an earlier
decision and meet with him as he travels to the USA tomorrow.
Meanwhile, the sting of the BBC TV program The Accused, seems significant. One of
the on-camera accusers, Richard Falk, Professor of International Relations at
Princeton University, who is Jewish, has been forced to ask for police protection.
Professor Falk, we should mention, was one of the publisher of MER's professors when
Mark Bruzonsky got his degree in international relations from Princeton's Woodrow
Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. In 1984 in a personal article
published in the Los Angeles Times, Bruzonsky, wrote about Professor Falk and how long
ago before others were doing so Falk was thoughtfully and courageously pointing out
the similarities between the Apartheid system in South Africa and Israeli policies
toward the Palestinians.

TRANSCRIPT OF BBC PANORAMA PROGRAM THE ACCUSED

Original Broadcast Date: 6/17/01:
FERGAL KEANE: On a Autumn morning in 1982 an Israeli soldier walked
into a refugee camp and was confronted with a scene of desolation.

EMMANUEL ROSEN
Journalist for Israeli Defence Force, 1982
It was very quiet, no one screamed, no one yelled inside the camp. I
remember the smell. I remember the picture that people were lying one
on another and some of them were already dead, some of them were
still breathing.

KEANE: At least 800 civilians were massacred after Israel's Minister
of Defence, Ariel Sharon, allowed
Lebanese Phalangist militiamen into the camps of Sabra and Shatila.

Ariel Sharon speaking in 1985
Not one of us, no one of our soldiers, no one of our commanders, not
myself, no one of our political leaders
in Israel was involved in that tragic event.

KEANE: When Ariel Sharon says, and other senior Israeli officers,
that they couldn't possibly have predicted what might have happened...

MORRIS DRAPER
US Special Envoy to the Middle East, 1982
Complete and utter nonsense.

KEANE: Nobody has ever been prosecuted for the killings or for
failing in their responsibilities to the
murdered civilians. This is the story of those who stand accused.
In June 1982 Israel's army stormed across
an international border and invaded Lebanon. The Israelis said they
wanted to protect their borders from
Palestinian guerrilla attack and Ariel Sharon's army was soon laying
siege to the capital Beirut with its Palestinian camps.

MOUNAIR AHMED
It was very scary because you always hear the close bombs by and you
always hear someone just died or someone just got injured.

KEANE: An estimated 300 people were killed in a single day's
bombing.

Dr RANAAN GISSEN Israeli Prime Minister's spokesman:
The threat emanating from Lebanon as far as the terrorism that was
launched by the PLO was such that if
we didn't go to that war, the whole northern part of Israel would
have been depopulated.

KEANE: After two months of war the PLO gave in to the Israeli demand
that they leave Lebanon. For the
civilians in Sabra and Shatila it meant peace. Children swam in the
craters left by bombs. Tens of
thousands of people were crammed into the ghettos of Sabra and
Shatila. For families like the Ahmeds
peace gave them a chance to start work on reconstruction.

NABIL AHMED
Many of the homes that we lived in had no doors, no windows. The
ceiling half messed up is shaky. No
water, no electricity. It was very, very difficult.

KEANE: An estimated 14,000 PLO and Syrian fighters were evacuated
from Beirut. With the fighters
forced out, many left behind in the camps felt afraid.

It was natural to feel afraid after the Palestinian resistance had

I Stole the Head of Prescott Bush! More Scary Skull and Bones Tales
by Ron Rosenbaum

What if I told you I’d stolen the skull of Prescott Bush, George W.’s
grandfather? Snuck up to the Bush family burial plot in the depths of the
night, dug up the coffin, cracked it open, yanked the skull off the skeleton
and slipped away with it. How would you react? How would George W. Bush react?

I raise these questions to put in perspective the allegations against George
W. Bush’s secret society, Skull and Bones, allegations that link the society
and Governor Bush’s grandfather to the practice of grave robbing. I raise
these questions to help put in perspective the bizarre-yet-true moment when
George W. Bush’s uncle sought to offer the skull of a young child to an
Apache tribal official in an apparent attempt to hush up a potential Bush
family scandal. Should this skeleton in the Bush closet that was, in fact,
part of a skeleton, be an issue in the Presidential campaign?

It seems like the grave-robbing allegation just will not die. A new source
has come forward to substantiate a previous allegation involving Bush family
patriarch Prescott Bush and to broaden the charge from one skull-snatching to
a secret-society-wide Skull and Bones practice. And the source has added a
further allegation: license-plate stealing. All of which paints a picture of
a grave-robbing, plate-stealing crime spree of the privileged elite.
Practices, including those of his own grandfather, candidate George W. should
be called upon to disclaim or defend.

The new source, whom I’ll call (what else?) Deep Skull, came forward in
response to my appeal in the pages of The Observer recently (Inside George
W.’s Secret Crypt, March 27.) I had made a public appeal to the women of the
legendary Skull and Bones all-girl break-in team. These were the intrepid
women who had in the late 70’s slipped illicitly inside the sanctum sanctorum
of the blue blood Old Boys network, the forbidding, windowless Egyptian-style
crypt on the Yale campus in New Haven which Skull and Bones initiates call
the Tomb.

Two decades ago, one of the all-girl break-in team’s confederates had shown
me the pictures taken inside the Tomb during the break-in. And very fetching
pictures they were, one of my favorite being a kind of mock pajama party
featuring two of the break-in team in Laura Ashley—like nightclothes and one
in men’s pajamas clustered around the base of the Skull and Bones grandfather
clock, which featured a skeleton hanging inside the glass pendulum case. One
bare toe nudging an actual skull.

For strictly journalistic reasons, I was hoping one of these brave women
would come forward and supply to me the photos of their successful raid on
the crypt of the secret society that has for nearly two centuries shaped the
character of the men who shaped the American character. You know the roll
call: The pajama-clad ninjas were lounging in a place that had been the
secret retreat of Presidents such as William Howard Taft and George Bush;
Supreme Court Justices such as Potter Stewart; Secretaries of State such as
Henry Stimson; diplomatic mandarins such as Averell Harriman and Robert
Lovett; National Security advisers (and Bay of Pigs planners and Vietnam war
architects) such as William and McGeorge Bundy; Senators such as Cooper,
Chafee, Boren and Kerry, to name just a few; publishing magnates with names
like Luce and Cowles; C.I.A. recruits William F. Buckley and William Sloane
Coffin. There in the bowels of the Skull and Bones Tomb, to the accompaniment
of occult male bonding rituals that involved baring their souls and, some
say, their bodies, they’d spill their guts to each other, share their sexual
histories together ... and rob skulls together?

That was the question raised again by Deep Skull. She’s a woman who was
surreptitiously taken into the Tomb, contacted me, and her story is even more
provocative because she was taken into the Tomb by an initiate–an unheard-of
breach of the bloodcurdling vows of secrecy the Skull and Bones society
demands of its members.

She was taken inside and was not only given a tour but given the secrets,
which she has now passed on to me. But before we get to the question of
stolen skulls, let me get to the story of the allegedly stolen license plates
that I think helps put the grave-robbing charge against George W.’s society
(and his grandfather) in context.

In my previous Observer piece on Skull and Bones, I’d spoken of the the Room
with the License Plates of Many States. I’d spoken of it in a kind of
tongue-in-cheek way as a kind of corrective to all the grand conspiracy
theories that have made the Tomb of Skull and Bones the epicenter of the
Hidden Hand that secretly rules the world. My point was

[CTRL] Fwd: [GATA] Riley column in Financial Times is about gold and GATA

2001-06-23 Thread Kris Millegan

Dear Friend of GATA and Gold:

Barry Riley yesterday devoted his column in The
Financial Times, The Long View, to gold and GATA, and
we couldn't be more grateful. We'll happily accept the
gentle satire in exchange for Riley's again taking note
of us and making our points to an international audience.

Riley's column is a reminder that the battle for a free
market in gold is being fought by GATA, not by the World
Gold Council or anyone else.

The Long View: That old-time religion

By Barry Riley
The Financial Times
June 22, 2001

http://news.ft.com/ft/gx.cgi/ftc?
pagename=Viewc=Articlecid=FT3LIBY5AOClive=true

The setting sun was shining warmly, but it wasn't a
very good omen as I strolled one evening this week into
the so-called bugs' bash, the once famous, but these
days sadly under-attended, midsummer barbecue of the
British United Gold Society. It is my own fault: if I
am foolish enough to attend esoteric events I am bound
to run the risk of bumping into my old adversary Fringe
Freddie.

Sure enough, there he was, glass of champagne in hand,
advancing towards me. I looked around desperately, but
was hemmed in by the promotional stall for a gold-
mining stocks website on one side and the PR advisers
of the World Gold Council on the other. He wore a
yellow metal badge proclaiming: Bring back the gold
standard. There was no escape.

Are you still punting on gold, Freddie? I opened
provocatively. It must be 18 months since we last met,
and you don't normally back losers for that length of
time. Gold, after all, came within a whisker of a 22-
year low when it sank to $256 an ounce in April, and it
has not recovered very much.

Freddie grinned, revealing a new gold tooth. Like
nearly all the rest, you've been deceived by the dollar
propagandists, old boy, he responded. Over the past
18 months the bullion price has RISEN against the yen
and the euro, not to mention the pound sterling. Oh,
and it's easily beaten the main stock market indices,
too.

Not bad, eh? And it's only the beginning. Several
attempts at an upside breakout, the latest of which
took the price up 11 per cent, have been smothered by
intervention. But the anti-gold conspiracy organised by
the US government is running out of time and metal. A
big price upsurge, maybe a doubling, is just around the
corner. Just look at the mining stocks: your own FT
Gold Mines Index is up 25 per cent since April.

I replied that I had heard the gold conspiracy stories
time and time again. But the gold bugs were trying to
create a mystery where there wasn't one. Mining output
was rising steadily, thanks to improvements in
technology, and the price was being driven down. Gold
was a relic that was simply out of date.

No rational argument has any chance against a fervent
conspiracy theorist, however. Freddie's eyes began to
gleam, in a manner normally triggered by a major crop
failure and the mouthwatering prospect of a global
famine. The immediate object of his attention, though,
was the yellow metal.

The signs are all there, old chap, he hissed.
Official lending of gold by the central banks has been
much more than the 5,000 tonnes they admit. The recent
jump in the gold lease rate shows that some of the
lending central banks have backed off, because they
worry about running out of bullion. Meanwhile the
Americans are desperately printing dollars to stop
their economy diving into a recession. Gold is the only
place left to go.

I admitted that I'd had my curiosity aroused by the
gold carry trade, the manoeuvre in which big banks
have borrowed gold at very low lease rates and invested
the proceeds in bonds, making a big running profit. But
the profit is destroyed, and could be turned into a
massive loss, if the bullion price rises sharply. Hence
the allegations of price manipulation.

But I pointed out that a professor at the London
Business School, Anthony Neuberger, was hired by the
World Gold Council to investigate whether activity in
derivatives was seriously depressing the gold price.
Last month he reported that the effect was small. An
effective extra supply of 4,000 tonnes may have been
generated during the 1990s, but that compared with an
existing global hoard of some 140,000 tonnes.

Be honest, retorted Freddie. You've only read the
spin doctors' press release and not the full 120-page
report. The professor was required to accept the bogus
official statistics as accurate. Even so, he has
confirmed that the lending market is very fragile, and
horribly vulnerable to a serious squeeze. Watch this
space.

Instead I looked optimistically towards the buffet
table, where the menu was advertised as ingots of
golden trout and 22-carrot salad. But the charcoal
barbecues seemed to be causing problems, so there was
no easy escape from the party pest.

All right, I admit there are some interesting
parallels with what happened to the London Gold Pool

Ohmigosh! Somebody assaulted the Cookie Monster

 Saturday, June 23, 2001

A Maryland man punched and kicked Cookie Monster at a crowded
Sesame Street theme park outside Philadelphia, after the character
declined to pose for a photo with his 3-year-old daughter, police say.

Lee McPhatter allegedly became irate when his daughter, Mina,
approached Cookie Monster at Sesame Place to have a photo taken only
to be moved aside by Jennie McNelis, 21, who was inside the Cookie
 Monster suit.

Police said McPhatter began shouting at the blue, furry Cookie Monster,
then thrust his head into the character's mouth. When the cookie-loving
monster pushed back, McPhatter allegedly pushed the character to the
ground, and began punching and kicking.

McNelis was treated at a local hospital for injuries including bruised ribs.

This is a first. We've had character costumes stolen and numerous
shopliftings, but never anything like this, said Middletown Police Officer
 Dan Buckley.

McPhatter, 22, of Waldorf, Maryland, was arrested for the June 9
incident, arraigned before a district magistrate and released on $20,000
 bail.

Located 20 miles northeast of Philadelphia, Sesame Place bills itself as
the only U.S. theme park based on the popular children's television
program. Officials at the park, which is operated by Anheuser-Busch
Adventure Parks, were not immediately available to comment on the
 attack.

They

Virus Targets NSA's Echelon

While experts agree that the writers who recently crafted a variant of the
ILOVEYOU Outlook worm may not spread infections very far, its reason for
existence may get the attention of the National Security Agency.

According to antivirus software maker Sophos Inc., which described the virus
Wednesday in an alert at
http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/vbsloveletcl.html, only one incident
has been reported so far. As with most recent worms, this one, named
VBS/LoveLet-CL, requires Microsoft Outlook and attempts to send itself to
every address in an infected computer's address book.

The worm doesn't offer a really compelling reason to click the attachment.
The subject line reads "!!!" and the body of the E-mail reads ": - )
MuCuX..." and carries the attachment echelon.vbs. Most Internet users may be
unaware that the National Security Agency runs project Echelon, which
purportedly aims to eavesdrop on phone calls, fax transmissions, and E-mails
containing certain key words, and people whose computers are infected with
this virus won't see the slew of text hidden within the executable.

According to Sophos, the file is packed with keywords. The keywords seem to
be designed to attract the electronic ears of Echelon's spy satellites,
likely with the hopes of overloading the system. Keywords include NSA, PGP,
cia, yemen, toxin, DEA, smuggle, spook, words, nitrate, and boobytraps. The
authors, going by the monikers Extirpater and beyin, also call for other
hackers to "fl00d" Echelon. Fl00d is hacker-speak for a denial-of-service
attack.

Many people may wonder why virus writers unleash their destruction on others'
digital property. And the only clue from these two virus writers is their
question to the NSA: "Why are you using echelon type stupid things to listen
around . . .?" -- George V. Hulme

[CTRL] Khobar Indictments Based On Torture

Saudi human rights monitor: Khobar indictments based on torture

TAREK AL-ISSAWI, Associated Press Writer    Saturday, June 23, 2001

(06-23) 03:29 PDT (AP) -- With BC-Khobar Towers-What's Next, Bjt

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) -- The indictment of 13 Saudis and one
Lebanese in the 1996 Khobar bombing is "worth nothing" because it is based on
information obtained through torture, the director of a Saudi human rights
group said.

Ali Al-Ahmed, director of the Saudi Institute based in McLean, Va., said
Saudi intelligence agents tortured four of the men indicted by a U.S. grand
jury in the attack that killed 19 U.S. servicemen.

"This indictment is tainted with blood, murder and torture," Al-Ahmed said in
a telephone interview. "It's worth nothing."

The four suspects remain in Saudi prisons, along with five others named in
the indictment released Thursday in Alexandria, Va., Al-Ahmed said. Four
others remain at large, he said. He asserted that two other Saudis -- whose
names do not appear in the indictment -- were tortured to death during the
Saudi investigation. Al-Ahmed did not mention the Lebanese.

The U.S. government said only that "some" of the 14 defendants were in
custody in various countries.

Interior Ministry officials could not be reached for comment, but the kingdom
long has denied accusations by international human rights groups of torturing
inmates and says such claims are attacks on Islam intended to harm the
country's image.

A spokesman for the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh declined to comment on the Saudi
Institute allegations, but referred a reporter to the 2000 State Department
Human Rights Report on Saudi Arabia.

"There were credible reports that the authorities abused detainees, both
citizens and foreigners. Ministry of Interior officials are responsible for
most incidents of abuse, including beatings and sleep deprivation. In
addition, there were allegations of torture," the report said.

American investigators were allowed to attend interrogation sessions in Saudi
prisons but were refused requests to directly question those arrested or
detained.

Shortly before the indictments were announced, Al-Ahmed sent an e-mail to The
Associated Press in Dubai naming 13 men he said his organization had
determined were "continuously tortured daily for months by Saudi
investigators in Riyadh and Dammam."

Four were on the list of those indicted in connection with the Khobar Towers
attack.

All four, according to both the U.S. indictment and Al-Ahmed's statement,
come from the same town in Saudi Arabia -- Qatif, just 12 miles northwest of
Al-Khobar, site of the deadly bombing.

The men were early recruits -- but not top leaders -- in the plot to kill
Americans in Saudi Arabia, and played key roles in scouting Khobar Towers and
other potential American targets as early as 1993, three years before the
bombing, the U.S. indictment said.

By 1988 and 1990, the four were members or associates of Saudi Hezbollah, the
terror group blamed by the United States for the attack, the indictment said.

Saudi Hezbollah was founded by members of the desert kingdom's Shiite Muslim
minority who fled into exile in the 1980s to escape what they said was
persecution of their economic underclass by the Sunni majority. Many of the
exiles went to Iran, drawn by the success of their fellow Shiites' 1979
Islamic revolution that overthrew another monarchy.

The U.S. indictment places heavy blame on Iran for nurturing Saudi Hezbollah
but stops short of mentioning any Iranians by name or linking them directly
to Khobar.

The Saudi Institute list of those allegedly tortured by Saudi interrogators
includes the following four Khobar suspects:

* Mustafa al-Qassab, a 30-year-old businessman married to a Lebanese who was
arrested in April 1997 and tortured daily for six months.

* Sa'ed al-Bahar, a 34-year-old clergyman who was arrested in August 1996,
tortured and kept in solitary confinement for two years.

* Abdallah al-Jarash, a 35-year-old teacher who was arrested August 1996 and
"tortured ... to confess responsibility to Khobar bombing."

* Hussein al-Mughis, a civil servant who was arrested August 1996 and
"tortured by hanging and electric shocks on his chest."

Al-Bahar was among five defendants named in five conspiracy accounts but not
charged with the actual bombing and killings.

The three others are among nine defendants charged on all 46 counts,
including murder, bombing resulting in death and conspiracy to commit murder
of Americans and U.S. government employees.

Al-Jarash and al-Mughis were among several defendants who often met or were
recruited by Saudi Hezbollah at the Sayyeda Zeinab shrine on the outskirts of
Damascus, the Syrian capital, according to the U.S. indictment.

The shrine, refurbished at Iran's expense after the 1979

[CTRL] Conservatives Use IRS To Attack Environmental Group

Attack on tax status of environment group
Conservatives ask IRS for new ruling

Glen Martin, Chronicle Environment Writer       Thursday, June 21, 2001

In a move that could hobble environmental protests, a conservative lobbying
organization has petitioned the Internal Revenue Service to rescind nonprofit
status for a San Francisco environmental group.

Environmentalists say a positive ruling by the IRS would have a chilling
effect on nonprofit organizations that sometimes engage in lobbying or
protests.

The unusual action by the Frontiers of Freedom Institute in Arlington, Va.,
against Rainforest Action Network (RAN) could represent a new strategy by
conservative groups alarmed by recent large-scale protests against world
trade and multinational corporations.

Rainforest Action Network specializes in public campaigns against companies
the group believes are involved in the destructive logging of old-growth
forests or selling products from such forests.

The Frontiers of Freedom Institute has requested that the IRS revoke the
501(c)(3) status of Rainforest Action. Such status means that an organization
is tax-exempt and that all contributions made to it are tax deductible.

"They basically contend that because some members of Rainforest Action have
participated in misdemeanor trespass (during protests), they are engaged in
criminal behavior, and that (RAN) therefore deserves to be stripped of
nonprofit status," said Michael Shellenberger, a spokesman for the
environmental group.

The IRS can revoke 501(c)(3) status if it determines an organization spends
too much money on lobbying -- generally, more than 20 percent of revenues --
or if members engage in criminal activity.

"It's a canard," Shellenberger said of the institute's contentions. "The kind
of activity that would require revocation of 501(c)(3) is felonious activity
-- embezzlement and the like."

Jason Wright, a spokesman for the institute, confirmed that his organization
had made the request to the IRS but declined to comment further to The
Chronicle, saying the story had been promised exclusively to another
publication.

In March, the Frontiers of Freedom Institute issued a press release
condemning Rainforest Action Network for protests held at the headquarters of
Boise Cascade, a forest products company based in Boise, Idaho.

George Landrith, the institute's executive director, called Rainforest Action
Network "fundamentally radical, anti-capitalist and lawless."

"American companies are the most responsible forest resource developers in
the world," Landrith said. "In contrast, RAN's approach to forest resource
development would cost thousands of jobs, reduce choices for consumers and
achieve little environmental good."

Boise Cascade has been a primary target of Rainforest Action because of its
logging activities in old-growth coniferous forests in British Columbia.

Boise Cascade spokeswoman Susan Walton said her company was not affiliated
with Frontiers of Freedom.

"But we are certainly aware that some organizations are beginning to question
the status of groups like RAN as charitable institutions due to their lawless
activities," Walton said. "We have found (RAN) to be a group of reckless,
lawless and radical activists."

Walton said three RAN members had been arrested in Boise in April for
rappeling off a building during protests against the company.

"And three others were arrested in October of last year when they illegally
entered our building," she said. "We're just thankful no one was hurt."

Walton said Boise Cascade had met several times with RAN staff members to
discuss logging issues and would do so again, "but the first item on the
agenda will have to be a correction of the mistruths they have spread on this
company."

Shellenberger said Rainforest Action would survive no matter what the IRS
decided. "(Frontiers of Freedom) is trying to scare our supporters, but they
won't be scared," he said. "Ultimately, this will help us raise money."

But other environmental leaders deplore the development. "It's outrageous,"
said Carl Pope, director of the Sierra Club. "By the standard Frontiers of
Freedom is trying to apply, the NAACP and other civil rights groups would
have lost their tax exemptions because members participated in protests.

"I think this could have a very chilling effect on many organizations. If it
goes through, we'll have very strong evidence that the Bush administration
has politicized the IRS."

Let me get this straight first.

Are you saying Ariel Sharon has NOT commited war crimes ?

Were not talking about whether Sharon committed ANY war crimes.
We are talking about the Sabra and Shatilla massacre. He did not
commit THAT war crime. But the Arabs have mounted a campaign to
bring him up on charges in the World Court for THAT war crime.
They will lose that one too because it's not true. But the point
is to try to win PR points. They have no interest in the real killers
of their people in Sabra and Shatila. They know what really happened
and who is responsible, yet never brought charges against them.

Are you saying Ariel Sharon has NOT commited war crimes ?
a simple answer of yes or no will suffice.

No. I'm not saying that at all. I know the history of the region
very well. Sharon was ( is ) a military general. He has fought real
wars with real enemies. All Arabs. He has taken part in, or commanded
troops who have committed war crimes. No doubt about it.

But this is the nature of war. There is NO general who has taken part
in a war who is not responsible for war crimes as modernly defined. NONE.
The winners in those wars are heroes and the losers can always be
charged as a war criminal. The recent war in Kosovo is the absolutely
perfect example.

There will ALWAYS be war crimes in war. ALWAYS The solution is to
not allow wars to get started. That is the ONLY moral way to handle
potential conflict.

Now let's get to the real stuff. How can you take the Palestinians seriously
about war crimes when their leader is Yassir Arafat??? You must be
kidding.

Arafat has not even got the excuse and cover of fighting a war. The list
of his violent criminal acts against civilians is incontrovertible. Would
you like me to post it?

This is why you people are a joke to me. You are supporters of actual,
real terrorists who have been ethnically cleansed from Jordan, Kuwait,
Saudi, and Lebanon, for their charming behavior. All Arab countries. Where
were you then? Where was your outrage against the host countries for ethnic
cleansing?

Where do you people get the audacity to point fingers at ANYBODY while
supporting the PLO and Yassir Arafat. What astonishing hypocrisy. Even from
Liberals.

Navy Commander Steers True Course on Sex Site

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Reuters) - Use of a government computer to view
sex sites and a guilty conscience have led to the suspension from duty of
the commander of the Canadian Forces' Pacific fleet.

The military said on Monday that Commodore Eric Lerhe was temporarily
relieved of command after he admitted to looking at ''Penthouse-like''
Internet sites during his off-duty hours in his own quarters, but using a
Navy-owned laptop computer.

I still haven't seen any information from any media source about *what*

Joining the traditional rationalizations for state coercion - God's

fourth: coercion as treatment. Unlike theocracy, democracy, and

Radio Free Dixie: Robert F. Williams and the Roots of Black Power
Timothy B. Tyson
Format: Paperback, 416pp.
ISBN: 0807849235
Publisher: University of North Carolina Press
Pub. Date: February 2001
From the Publisher
Radio Free Dixie is the story of Robert F. Williams - one of the most
influential black activists of the generation that toppled Jim Crow, created
a new black sense of self, and forever altered the arc of American history.
In the late 1950s, as president of the Monroe, North Carolina, branch of the
NAACP, Williams and his followers used machine guns, dynamite, and Molotov
cocktails to confront Klan terrorists. Advocating armed self-reliance by
black Southerners, Williams challenged not only white supremacists but also
Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights establishment. Forced to flee
during the 1960s to Cuba - where he broadcast Radio Free Dixie, a program
of black politics and music that could be heard as far away as Los Angeles
and New York City - and then China, Williams remained a controversial figure
for the rest of his life. Radio Free Dixie reveals that both the civil
rights movement and the Black Power movement, often portrayed in clashing
terms, grew out of the same soil, confronted the same predicaments, and
reflected the same quest for African American freedom.

From Julian Bond
A compelling story that...needs to be ready by all who care about race,
courage, and humanity. Robert Williams was an inspiration to many an a
threat to others; Tyson give him his proper due.

From Publisher's Weekly
To some, the civil rights radical Robert Williams's philosophy of armed
self-defense was the very antithesis of Martin Luther King's nonviolent
resistance. However, each man represented a wing of the growing civil rights
movement, and both grasped and skillfully wielded the political leverage
that the dynamics of the Cold War afforded the civil rights cause. After a
stint in the army during WWII, Williams returned to his hometown in Monroe,
N.C., where he built a uniquely militant NAACP chapter and attracted
international attention to racist hypocrisy. When eventually forced by Ku
Klux Klan vigilantes and an FBI dragnet to abandon his activities and flee
the U.S. with his family in 1961, he found safe harbor in revolutionary
Cuba, where he produced Radio Free Dixie, a program of politics and music
broadcast to America. Written with the cooperation of Williams and his
family, Tyson's firecracker text crackles with brilliant and lasting images
of black life in the Carolinas and across the South in the '40s, '50s and
'60s. Liberally peppered with quotes from Williams, many taken from his
unpublished autobiography, While God Lay Sleeping, as well as from
interviews and radio tapes, the book is imbued with the man's voice and his
indefatigable spirit. An assistant professor of Afro-American studies at the
University of Wisconsin-Madison and the co-editor of Democracy Betrayed,
Tyson successfully portrays Williams as a troubled visionary, a strong,
stubborn and imperfect man, one who greatly influenced what became the Black
Power Movement and its young leaders. Photos. (Oct.) Copyright 1999 Cahners

Suburban Warriors:
The Origins of the New American Right
Lisa McGirr
In the early 1960s, American conservatives seemed to have fallen on hard
times. McCarthyism was on the run, and movements on the political left were
grabbing headlines. The media lampooned John Birchers's accusations that
Dwight Eisenhower was a communist puppet. Mainstream America snickered at
warnings by California Congressman James B. Utt that barefooted Africans
were training in Georgia to help the United Nations take over the country.
Yet, in Utt's home district of Orange County, thousands of middle-class
suburbanites proceeded to organize a powerful conservative movement that
would land Ronald Reagan in the White House and redefine the spectrum of
acceptable politics into the next century.

Suburban Warriors introduces us to these people: women hosting coffee
klatches for Barry Goldwater in their tract houses; members of anticommunist
reading groups organizing against sex education; pro-life Democrats
gradually drawn into conservative circles; and new arrivals finding work in
defense companies and a sense of community in Orange County's mushrooming
evangelical churches. We learn what motivated them and how they interpreted
their political activity. Lisa McGirr shows that their movement was not one
of marginal people suffering from status anxiety, but rather one formed by
successful entrepreneurial types with modern lifestyles and bright futures.
She describes how these suburban pioneers created new political and social
philosophies anchored in a fusion of Christian fundamentalism, xenophobic
nationalism, and western libertarianism.

While introducing these rank-and-file activists, McGirr chronicles Orange
County's rise from nut country to political vanguard. Through this
history, she traces the evolution of the New Right from a virulent
anticommunist, anti-establishment fringe to a broad national movement
nourished by evangelical Protestantism. Her original contribution to the
social history of politics broadens--and often upsets--our understanding of
the deep and tenacious roots of popular conservatism in America.

Lisa McGirr is Assistant Professor of History at Harvard University.

Reviews:
McGirr paints a complex picture . . . Incisive, yet fair, this represents
an important standing of how antimodernist ideologies continue to
thrive.--Publishers Weekly
The strength of her book is her explanation of the growth of the
conservative movement through the stories of women and men who moved to the
Orange County suburbs . . . Remember welfare? Whatever happened to it? Where
did affirmative action go? [McGirr explains] their demise and that of many
other ideas that seemed so permanent, so much a part of a national
consensus, in 1964.--Bill Boyarski, Los Angeles Times

A focused, stimulating account that demonstrates that many of the best
contemporary works of the Sixties are about the rise of the Right.--Library
Journal

A fascinating tale . . . Suburban Warriors goes a long way to explaining
the origins of a movement whose influence remains formidable to this
day.--Stephen Dale, Washington Post Book World

Endorsements:
A landmark study that will enlighten anyone who cares about the evolution
of American politics since World War II. With Lisa McGirr's thorough,
sophisticated, smoothly crafted exploration of Orange County conservatism,
the history of the modern Right has finally come of age.--Michael Kazin,
Georgetown University, coauthor of America Divided and The Populist
Persuasion
In her impressively researched, gracefully written book, Lisa McGirr
convincingly demonstrates that historians, who have been preoccupied with
the Left in the 1960s, need to develop a deeper comprehension of how
conservatives in places such as Orange County reconfigured American
political culture. Readers will find her attempt to understand them, rather
than dismiss or condemn them, both rewarding and challenging.--William E.
Leuchtenburg, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

[CTRL] Study links red meat to colon cancer

Study links red meat to colon cancer

By EMMA ROSS, Associated Press

LYON, France (June 23, 2001 3:43 p.m. EDT) - Eating red meat may
create about as much of a certain cancer-promoting chemical in the colon
as smoking does, new research indicates.

The findings, presented Saturday in Lyon at the European Conference on
Nutrition and Cancer, were part of a study that also appears to revive the
theory that fiber wards off colon cancer, the second most deadly cancer
worldwide.

The idea that a high-fiber diet rich in fruits, vegetables and grains prevents
colon cancer suffered a setback last year after two studies failed to find an
effect.

But the latest research, which experts say is the most reliable to date on the
link between eating habits and cancer, found that those who ate a high-
fiber diet had 40 percent less chance of developing colon cancer than
those who ate the least roughage.

The study, which involved 406,323 people from nine European countries,
had the widest range in fiber intake of any study to date.

At the start of the study, in 1993, questionnaires separated the people into
five categories, according to how much fiber they ate. The top and bottom
1 percent were excluded to eliminate extremes. There were about 80,000
people in each of the remaining categories.

There were 176 colon cancer diagnoses in the group who ate the least
fiber and 124 cases in the group that ate the most - a difference of 40
percent.

The finding redeems fiber as a potential anti-cancer agent, said Nicholas
Day, a cancer expert at Cambridge University in England. Day was not
involved in the fiber investigation.

Day has criticized previous studies on nutrition and cancer. He says they
were too small, were limited to one country at a time, included narrow
ranges in eating patterns and did not measure precisely enough to detect
the effect of small differences in nutrition.

Dr. Anthony Miller, a professor at the German Cancer Research Center
who was not involved in the study, agreed.

I think this study shows things are beginning to come together, Miller said.
The (American) studies, the way they measured everything was not very
good.

Scientists believe that bacteria in the colon ferment fiber and in the process
create a by-product called butyrate. Experts believe that cells in the lining of
the colon turn cancerous when normal cell death is hampered. Test-tube
studies have shown that butyrate is a potent inducer of cell death.

Those who don't eat a lot of fiber tend to load up on protein, which also
provides food for bacteria in the colon, said Dr. Sheila Bingham, deputy
director of the Human Nutrition Unit at Cambridge University, who led both
studies.

Lab tests have shown that the combination of red meat and colon bacteria
produces chemicals called N-Nitroso compounds, some of which are
cancerous, Bingham said.

One of them, known as NNK, is found in tobacco smoke.

In the meat experiment, volunteers moved into a laboratory for at least three
months and their diets were manipulated. Cells from the lining of the colon
that were shed during defecation were examined to see the effect of the
dietary changes.

Everyone was put on the same regime. Calories, fat and weight were kept
the same throughout, but the amounts and types of protein changed.

The more red meat eaten, the higher the concentration of N-Nitroso in the
feces.

In fact, at the high level of red meat consumption, the level of N-Nitroso
compounds which were present in the fecal material was equivalent to the
concentration that is found in tobacco smoke, Bingham said.

The most red meat the scientists gave the volunteers was 420 grams (15
ounces) per day.

Replacing the red meat with the same amount of chicken or fish resulted in
a drop in the N-Nitroso compounds back to normal. They stayed at that
level when the protein came from dairy or soy products.

The only difference between red and white meat is the amount of heam
they contain, Bingham said. Red meat is rich in heam, a part of the blood
that contains the iron that gives the meat its red color.

When the volunteers were fed a diet low in red meat but with supplements
of heam iron, the levels of N-Nitroso in the feces rose again.

Experts say the results are consistent with other evidence presented at the
meeting Friday, which indicated that preserved meats increase the risk of
colon cancer, but that fresh red meat may not.

Preserved meat, which includes bacon, cured ham, salami, corned beef
and pastrami, has much more heam than fresh meat such as steak or lamb
chops.

There is no proof that N-Nitroso compounds in the colon are toxic, but the
circumstantial evidence is strong that it might be, experts said.

[CTRL] Cheney Lied About Iraq Dealings

2001-06-23 Thread William Shannon
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A35751-2001Jun22.html

Firm's Iraq Deals Greater Than Cheney Has Said
Affiliates Had $73 Million in Contracts

Former executives at the Halliburton subsidiaries said Cheney did not object
to trading with Baghdad.

By Colum Lynch
Special to The Washington Post
Saturday, June 23, 2001; Page A01 UNITED NATIONS -- During last year's
presidential campaign, Richard B. Cheney acknowledged that the oil-field
supply corporation he headed, Halliburton Co., did business with Libya and
Iran through foreign subsidiaries. But he insisted that he had imposed a
"firm policy" against trading with Iraq.
"Iraq's different," he said.

According to oil industry executives and confidential United Nations records,
however, Halliburton held stakes in two firms that signed contracts to sell
more than $73 million in oil production equipment and spare parts to Iraq
while Cheney was chairman and chief executive officer of the Dallas-based
company.

Two former senior executives of the Halliburton subsidiaries say that, as far
as they knew, there was no policy against doing business with Iraq. One of
the executives also says that although he never spoke directly to Cheney
about the Iraqi contracts, he is certain Cheney knew about them.

Mary Matalin, Cheney's counselor, said that if he "was ever in a conversation
or meeting where there was a question of pursuing a project with someone in
Iraq, he said, 'No.' "

"In a joint venture, he would not have reviewed all their existing
contracts," Matalin said. "The nature of those joint ventures was that they
had a separate governing structure, so he had no control over them."

The trade was perfectly legal. Indeed, it is a case study of how U.S. firms
routinely use foreign subsidiaries and joint ventures to avoid the opprobrium
of doing business with Baghdad, which does not violate U.S. law as long as it
occurs within the "oil-for-food" program run by the United Nations.

Halliburton's trade with Iraq was first reported by The Washington Post in
February 2000. But U.N. records recently obtained by The Post show that the
dealings were more extensive than originally reported and than Vice President
Cheney has acknowledged.

As secretary of defense in the first Bush administration, Cheney helped to
lead a multinational coalition against Iraq in the Persian Gulf War and to
devise a comprehensive economic embargo to isolate Saddam Hussein's
government. After Cheney was named in 1995 to head Halliburton, he promised
to maintain a hard line against Baghdad.

But in 1998, Cheney oversaw Halliburton's acquisition of Dresser Industries
Inc., which exported equipment to Iraq through two subsidiaries of a joint
venture with another large U.S. equipment maker, Ingersoll-Rand Co.

The subsidiaries, Dresser-Rand and Ingersoll Dresser Pump Co., sold water and
sewage treatment pumps, spare parts for oil facilities and pipeline equipment
to Baghdad through French affiliates from the first half of 1997 to the
summer of 2000, U.N. records show. Ingersoll Dresser Pump also signed
contracts -- later blocked by the United States -- to help repair an Iraqi
oil terminal that U.S.-led military forces destroyed in the Gulf War.

Former executives at the subsidiaries said they had never heard objections --
from Cheney or any other Halliburton official -- to trading with Baghdad.

"Halliburton and Ingersoll-Rand, as far as I know, had no official policy
about that, other than we would be in compliance with applicable U.S. and
international laws," said Cleive Dumas, who oversaw Ingersoll Dresser Pump's
business in the Middle East, including Iraq.

Halliburton's primary concern, added Ingersoll-Rand's former chairman, James
E. Perrella, "was that if we did business with [the Iraqi regime], that it be
allowed by the United States government. If it wasn't allowed, we wouldn't do
it."

Dumas and Perrella said their companies' commercial links to the Iraqi oil
industry began before the U.N. Security Council imposed an oil embargo on
Baghdad in the wake of its 1990 invasion of Kuwait.

They returned to dealing with Iraq after the council established the
"oil-for-food" program in December 1996, permitting Iraq to export oil under
U.N. supervision and use the proceeds to buy food, medicine and humanitarian
goods. The program was expanded in 1998 to allow Iraq to import spare parts
for its oil facilities.

The Halliburton subsidiaries joined dozens of American and foreign oil supply
companies that helped Iraq increase its crude exports from $4 billion in 1997
to nearly $18 billion in 2000. Since the program began, Iraq has exported oil
worth more than $40 billion.

The proceeds funded a sharp increase in the country's nutritional standards,
nearly doubling the food rations distributed to Iraq's poor.

But U.S. and European officials acknowledged that the expanded production
also increased Saddam Hussein's capacity to siphon off money for weapons,
luxury goods and palaces. Security

[CTRL] Military Involved In Up To 4 Different Chemtrail Programs

2001-06-23 Thread William Shannon
http://www.sightings.com/general11/chmmill.htm

Military Said Behind Up To Four
Different Chemtrail Programs
EXCLUSIVE TO THE SPOTLIGHT

By Mike Blair

6-21-1

Just what exactly are those mysterious airplane vapor trails seen filling
America's skies? A group of independent investigators may have the answer.

In a series of high-tech programs that would enthrall the most dedicated
science fiction fans, the military is producing what have become known as
"chemtrails" -- the thick, viscous airplane engine trails that have been
poisoning the air and ground with toxic chemicals.

For two years, The SPOTLIGHT has been in contact with experts in fields
ranging from medicine to nuclear energy who have been investigating the
mysterious trails left by airplanes in skies all over America and in many
foreign countries.

These "tracks" in the skies, believed to be left by a combination of military
and civilian aircraft drawn into the massive, multi-billion dollar program,
are unlike regular high-flying aircraft's vapor trails. Instead of
dissipating rapidly, these so-called "chemtrails" mesh together for hours and
are often mistaken for natural clouds.

The principal chemical being deposited in the air consists of various
mixtures of barium salts, which were revealed in studies undertaken by a
Pennsylvania-based high-tech weapons scientist. Chemicals, he said, were
being utilized as part of the development of a new radar system at
Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. The base will be the site of
a public demonstration on Saturday, June 23, starting at 1 p.m. under the
sponsorship of Ohio Citizens Against Chemtrails, headed by Kim Weber, one of
the citizens working on the chemtrail investigation. The rally will be
attended by hundreds of people from across the nation who are concerned about
these poisons being dumped out of the sky onto millions of people on the
ground.

Considerable effort has been put into chemtrail research by a physicist who
has been associated with Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island, N.Y.
The scientist, with his fellow researchers, has determined that the
chemtrails are being created by efforts of the military in at least four
major, but separate, projects.

The first project is an effort to block the rays of the sun from hitting the
Earth, including ultra-violet radiation that will come through without an
adequate layer of ozone in the upper regions above the Earth. In the event of
global warming, this, it is hoped, could lower temperatures on the surface of
the Earth and block ultra-violet radiation from causing skin cancer in
humans. The aerosol being sprayed in this case is probably aluminum oxide or
a compound that would have similar properties, and is the only one of the
government programs that does not use the barium mixtures.

BLACK PROJECTS?

The second and most secret project is the Navy's Radio Frequency Mission
Planner (RFMP) program, which is a system encompassing a group of computer
programs. One of its supporting subprograms is know as Variable Terrain Radio
Parabolic Equation or VTRPE. This is a computer radio frequency propagation
program that deals with radio waves and enables the RFMP system to visually
see the terrain of a battlefield in three dimensions on a television-type
screen.

The RFMP system also depends on a satellites to supplement the images of a
battlefield picture obtained from the ground, thus producing the
3-dimensional images. In providing an interactive picture portraying in the
radar screen, the RFMP system allows the computer operator to develop
familiarity with the "environment" before a war mission occurs by playing a
variety of "what if?" virtual warfare scenarios on his computer screen. Since
all major modes of radio frequency propagation are modeled in his computer
(the RFMP system), special, sometimes counter-intuitive, cases can be
examined in detail and exploited during a battle. Initially, the VTRPE
computer program only worked accurately over water and along coastal areas
but not over land masses because the system's radar waves required an
atmospheric condition known as "ducting," over land, to operate accurately.

This "ducting" problem was solved by releasing an aerosol, a mixture of
barium salts into the atmosphere over the United States. Thus, they can make
an atmospheric radio frequency "duct" with a base of barium aerosol released
from aircraft.

One of the researchers, the physicist from Brookhaven, explained how the
process works: The chemical and electrical characteristics of the mixture
cause moisture to stay in the clouds. The aerosol sets up an electrical and
chemical environmental that supports RF ducting for the RFMP/VTRPE warfare
system."The mixture of barium salt from the aerosol when sprayed in a
straight line will also provide a ducting path form point A to point B and
will enable high frequency

Husband says woman changed medications
06/22/2001By Doug Swanson / The Dallas Morning News

Andrea Yates had taken a number of anti-depressant and anti-psychotic
medications since the birth of her fourth child in 1999, the same year she
attempted suicide.

They were commonly prescribed medications that work in different – and often
not completely understood – ways to alter the brain's chemistry.

Mrs. Yates' husband, Russell Yates, said Thursday that his wife began taking
Effexor and Remeron earlier this week. She had previously taken Risperdal,
Wellbutrin and Haldol, her husband said.

Although Mrs. Yates has not said why she drowned her five children, her
husband said he believes her depression played a major role. "She wasn't in
the right frame of mind," he said.

Although the medications she took are widely used, they don't work in all
cases, said Dr. Alan Schatzberg, chairman of the psychiatry department at the
Stanford University Medical Center. "Unfortunately, not everyone responds to
what you put them on," he said.

Risperdal is believed to adjust the imbalance of two brain chemicals, the
neurotransmitters known as dopamine and serotonin. The chemicals transfer
information from nerve to nerve in the brain.

Reducing dopamine activity often leads to a lessening of delusions and
hallucinations.

Reducing serotonin activity may help with lack of emotion and feelings of
being disconnected, said Risperdal's maker, Janssen Pharmaceutica of Belgium.
The company says it is the most-prescribed anti-psychotic in the United
States.

Wellbutrin, Remeron and Effexor are anti-depressants that affect
neurotransmitters. Remeron, one of the newer anti-depressants, stimulates
serotonin release while blocking specific serotonin receptors. All three are
commonly prescribed for depression.

Haldol, an anti-psychotic manufactured by Ortho-McNeil, is often prescribed
for schizophrenia and outbursts of aggression and agitation. It also works by
changing the flow of dopamine.

Anti-depressants have a number of possible side effects, including dry mouth,
blurry vision, nausea, muscle problems, loss of libido and tremors. The drugs
may take several weeks to work.

There have been some claims that various anti-depressants can produce
irrational or aberrant behavior, but these have not been accepted by the
medical community at large. "I think this kind of thing is unfortunately part
of the illness, not part of the treatment," Dr. Schatzberg said.

Depression is the most common mental ailment. The National Institute of
Mental Health says that in any given one-year period, about 9.5 percent of
U.S. adults suffer from a depressive illness.

New medicines to treat depression appear every year. Dosages vary, and are
often adjusted according to a patient's reaction to the drug. What works for
one person doesn't necessarily work for another, doctors say.

Mr. Yates said medication his wife took after the birth of their fourth child
did not work as well after the birth of their fifth, six months ago. When her
father died, he said, her condition worsened.

"She was just primed for that depression," he said. "We were all hopeful
she'd respond to the same medication she did the first time. ... She got to
maybe 65 percent and sort of stayed there and plateaued."
