"We recommend you breathe out of your nose."With "The Eye of the Tiger" blaring tinnily from a boom box, the flossers dug in for 45 seconds of intense, interdental cleansing.After counting down the 45 seconds, Boncimino, program director at Lake Geneva Youth Camp, yelled out the news:"That's it, you've done it! You have the record of the most people flossing simultaneously!"A mighty cheer went up.In the war on gum disease, gingivitis got its butt kicked. For today, anyway.All that was left was a group picture, wrapping up the used dental floss and counting the participants for the Guinness entry.Unofficially, 295 campers flossed, if not in unison, then at least vigorously, for at least 30 seconds.And while records are made to be broken, one thing never can be taken away from these intrepid flossers: They were the first.The idea was broached among camp staff six months ago, Boncimino said."We thought let's do something cool," he said. "Let's break a world's record."To do that, however, they had to get someone official to recognize the world's record.Either convinced it was a legitimate enterprise or just tired of being badgered, Guinness created the category of "Most People Flossing Simultaneously."The 50-year-old youth summer Bible camp has a lot of connections in Wisconsin, Illinois and Iowa. And the call went out for help.It was soon answered. Crest donated 350 toothbrushes and as many tubes of toothpaste for the event.Glide Floss produced not one, but two, 1,500-foot spools of floss.Among the observers were Napolitano of Palatine, Ill.; oral hygienist Donna Grzegorek, also of Palatine; and Dawn Vogle of Huntley, Ill. with Proctor Gamble, the makers of Crest.But it was campers who made it work.Some were eager to participate."I always, always, always wanted to be part of world's record," said Mo Cheeks, 16, of Mattesson, Ill."And I'm excited about brushing and flossing with this guy," he said, poking his friend Mike Starrick, 18, of Maywood, Ill."I think it's very much fun," Starrick added."I think it's awesome being part of a world's record," said Glenna Johnson, 17, of Tinley Park, Ill.Alex Kozlov, 15, who hails from Kazan, Russia, but is living in Des Plaines, Ill., right now, said he wasn't sure if this whole thing was serious. Still, "I'd like to be in the record book," he said.Not everyone was an eager volunteer."It's going to take too long, and it's stupid," complained Kinice Miller, 14, of Burnham, Ill.But after some cajoling by staff and friends, she selflessly signed her name, bravely grabbed a toothbrush and took her place in line."I'm doing it just to help them out," she said.And what happens to the floss that was used in this record-breaking event? Will it be bronzed? Or retired to a dental museum?Not exactly.Under U.S. regulations, used floss is considered a hazardous waste, Napolitano said. Woman charged in Whopper rage incidentASSOCIATED PRESSJuly 31, 2001 CHESTERTON, Ind. -- A women upset over the preparation of her hamburger stabbed a Burger King manager in the head with a pen, police said. Celinda Dellareese Barge of Detroit was arrested Sunday on charges of battery, resisting law enforcement and disorderly conduct. Barge swung a fist at assistant manager Amanda Benedict, 25, and then stabbed her in the crown of her head with a ball point pen, Police Chief George Nelson said. The incident begin in the drive-through lane when Barge complained to restaurant workers that her Whopper sandwich did not have bacon, as she had ordered, police said. Restaurant workers added bacon to the sandwich, but Barge complained the bacon was cold and that she didn't want ketchup. Benedict and another manager went outside to return Barge her money, but she threw two bags of food at them. Barge then followed the managers inside the restaurant and was fighting with Benedict when officers arrived, police said. Benedict was treated at a hospital and released. Barge was released from the Porter County Jail in Valparaiso on $5,000 bond Monday. Hey parents, here is one alternative to day care! Maybe she was just trying to be "her kids mom" like Dr. Laura encourages...and forgo the evils of daycare. My guess is she was just trying to save money. The only thing more offensive than her turning up the rado when the kid was crying in the trunk was that she was going to stuff her pie hole wih ice cream on a break at work and have her kids in the trunk all the way and not give them anything for fear that the co-worker who was with her might find out about her clever day care alternative...which thankfully he did anyway. Sounds like a bad movie... Woman Sentenced to 3 Months in Jail By Brian BergsteinAssociated Press WriterTuesday, July 31, 2001; 7:04 p.m. EDT SAN JOSE, Calif. A woman who repeatedly left her young children in the trunk of her car while she was at work and once turned up the radio to drown out one boy's cries was sentenced to three months in jail and five months of home detention Tuesday. A tearful Rosemarie Radovan, 31, also was sentenced to five years of probation. She pleaded no contest in March to two counts of felony child endangerment. "I know what I did was wrong," Radovan said, breaking down in tears. "I'm sorry about that. I love my children so much." The single mother said she has been in counseling and working on her parenting skills in hopes of someday being reunited with her sons, who have been living with her parents. Radovan was arrested in November after a co-worker told police he heard her 5-year-old son crying while he and Radovan drove to get ice cream. Radovan turned up the car's radio and kept driving a fact that Judge Robert Ambrose said he found "particularly offensive." Investigators determined that Radovan had left the boy and her other son, then 7, in the trunk as many as 10 times in a year while she worked at an electronics-manufacturing company in Santa Clara. On some occasions, the car's back seat was lowered so the boys could crawl from the trunk into the passenger section, prosecutor Dan Nishigaya said. McGowan said he was in line behind three men at the store, 10401 S. Western Ave., at 10:40 p.m. Sunday, when one of the three men asked the counter attendant for a drink. With the server's back turned, the man pulled what looked like a handgun from his waistband."He slid it up onto the counter and asked the clerk to `Give it up.'" McGowan said.Identifying himself as a Chicago police officer, the eight-year veteran tried to wrestle the suspect to the ground when one of the other suspects hit him on the head with a gun. Both guns turned out to be pellet guns, but police did recover a shotgun a block from the scene.Stunned by the blow, McGowan, 40, fell to the floor and the assailants fled the doughnut shop. An off-duty detective saw the suspects running and followed them, catching the license plate number. The three men were in custody within 45 minutes, McGowan said.According to Chicago Police Sgt. Ray Madigan, Antoine Clark, 19, of the 7800 block of South Merrill Avenue, Chicago, has been charged with aggravated battery to a police officer and attempted armed robbery. Delaurence Robinson, 18, of the 7900 block of South Constance Avenue, Chicago; and Lathan Monegan, 21, of the 1300 block of Buffalo Avenue in Calumet City, were both charged with attempted armed robbery.McGowan said he just reacted to the situation at the shop."The only thing that went through my mind was to grab him and get the gun away from me and the clerk," McGowan said. "You really can't think about anything. Some women may have just asked for free Gap clothes for life. peat Woman gets $330,000 after Mannequin hits her By WILL BLACK-- The Canadian Press VANCOUVER (CP) -- A former actress and founder of a local theatre company was awarded $330,000 on Monday in a suit against Gap Inc. filed after she was hit on the head by a falling store mannequin. Justice Carol Ross found the clothing store liable because "the mannequins are clearly unstable on their little mannequin feet." She ruled that although Elizabeth Ball suffered from many health problems, the accident left her unable to work the 60 hours a week she normally worked. Ball's employment "entailed long hours and high levels of stress. These factors combined to make the injury to (Ball) far more severe than might otherwise be expected," the judge ruled. Gap Inc. was ordered to pay Ball a total of $330,170 in damages for not securing the dummy. The judge noted Ball's career "was central to her identity. The loss of this career is a major blow, affecting her sense of identity, her self-esteem and overall enjoyment of life." Ball's husband said she would not be commenting because of possible appeals. The Gap's lawyer refused to comment. The judge found the mannequin accident was the final straw in a life full of mishaps and health problems. Ball was the founder of the Carousel Theatre Company in Vancouver, acting as its artistic director and manager. Previously she had worked at the Arts Club Theatre and offered a theatre course at the University of British Columbia. In September, 1996, Ball was shopping at a Gap Kids outlet in a suburban mall. While she was bent over looking at some clothing, the mannequin fell and hit her on the head. The headless dummy weighed just over four kilograms and the part believed to have caused Ball's injury was a wooden neck piece. The court heard the dummy was on a shelf about 1.5 metres above the ground. The store's assistant manager rushed over to ask if Ball was okay. Ball lay on the floor for about 20 minutes and complained of dizziness. The assistant manager, Angela Kizinna, testified that although she didn't notice any injury or see any blood, Ball was eventually carted away by her husband with the use of a wheelchair. Ball claimed the incident exacerbated a pre-existing neck injury and caused her difficulty concentrating, blurred her vision and reduced her stamina, leaving her unable to work. Court records show Ball had a lengthy record of health complaints and this wasn't the first time a store display item fell on her head. In July, 1991, while shopping at a lighting store, a chandelier came loose and fell on Ball's head. A doctor noticed bruising on her arm and around her eyes, prompting him to conclude she suffered a skull fracture, although X-rays came back negative. Ball's medical records show she has suffered from asthma and depression. She has been in two car accidents since 1978, leaving her with neck and arm pain and memory impairment. After the falling chandelier, she reported jaw pain and ear problems. The 18-year-old was rushed to hospital with severe injuries after Masha the hippopotamus savaged the intruder to defend her offspring at Kharkiv Zoo in northeast Ukraine. ``The girl...was messing around outside the fence and then decided, for some reason, to go and play and swim with the hippopotamus,'' Yelena Tkachenko, the zoo's director, told Reuters. Zoo workers managed to pull the woman out of the enclosure. ``The attack was the normal reaction of a normal animal defending her child and her territory,'' Tkachenko said. The woman is in a serious but stable condition in a local hospital. Tkachenko said the girl had not been drunk. Saba FBI questions Congressman's ex-chauffeur July 5, 2001 Posted: 3:49 PM EDT (1949 GMT) CERES, California (CNN) -- A former chauffeur to Congressman Gary Condit said the FBI asked him whether he believed the California Democrat could have killed Chandra Levy, the missing former intern who has been linked to the lawmaker. Vince Flammini, the former driver, said he told the FBI no. They asked me, 'What do you think happened to Chandra?' Flammini said in an interview with CNN. 'Did Gary kill her?' I said, 'Nah. Gary wouldn't kill her.' I said, 'Not in a million years,' I says, 'But he would drive her to the brink, of making her think that he loved her so much that she couldn't handle it. -Caveat Lector- Thursday August 2 1:28 PM ET Soy Protein Suppresses Breast Cancer Hormones By Suzanne Rostler NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Antioxidant compounds found in soy foods have been shown to reduce levels of hormones associated with breast cancer risk in women. Now, the results of a small study suggest that other factors associated with soy may also play a role in lowering cancer risk. The investigators found that nine healthy, premenopausal women who consumed a diet containing soymilk in which most of the antioxidant compounds, isoflavones, had been removed, produced less estrogen and progesterone than they produced before they added soy to their diets. Other reproductive hormones were not affected by the diet, which was also low in animal protein and high in fiber, the researchers report. According to the study in the July issue of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, estrogen levels fell as soy protein and fiber intake increased. However, Dr. Lee-Jane W. Lu, the study's lead author, stressed that it is not yet clear which dietary compounds caused the change in hormone levels. ``The important finding from my study is that it is not too hard to lower a woman's...female hormone,'' she told Reuters Health. ``By replacing--not supplementing--a portion of one's energy intake (with) soy, one can lower one's female hormones.'' Estrogen can stimulate the growth of some types of breast cancer cells and is thought to play a role in the development of some cases of breast cancer. Women with a higher lifetime exposure to estrogen--for instance, those who got their first period at an early age, those who do not have children and women who do not breastfeed--may face a higher risk of breast cancer. The hormone progesterone also contributes to breast cancer risk by helping tumors to grow. ``Our results may have implications for breast cancer prevention by soy dietary intervention,'' according to Lu and her colleagues at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. In the study, researchers measured levels of estrogen, progesterone, sex hormone-binding globulin, luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) in women before they began the diet. LH and FSH stimulate ovarian function. The women followed the diet, which included 36 ounces of soymilk containing less than 5 milligrams of isoflavones daily, for one month. The study diet contained more carbohydrate and less protein than the women's usual diets, the report indicates. Not at all the kind of images the gray-flanneled advocates of the brave new world order would like for their glossy promotional brochures touting the wonders of globalization and corporate hegemony: burning cars, tear gas, riot troops punching protesters in the face, water cannons stripping the hides off the backs of unarmed teenagers. And how about that poor, bloody protester lying dead in a pool of his own blood, felled by “live” ammunition. In one day alone, 150 people at the Genoa protests sustained injuries at the hands of police that required medical attention, including 50 members of the media. Now, it’s one thing if it’s just a bunch of nameless, black-bloc anarchists being dispatched from the future ranks of the AARP, but what’s the likelihood that Wolf and Sam and Cokie are going to sit on their hands for long while fellow members of the fourth branch are being gunned down like prairie dogs? This will not do! Thus, the Pentagon—ever mindful of its wobbly public image—proudly unveiled last March the latest in so-called “non-lethal” crowd control technology: The “Vehicle-Mounted Active Denial System,” a weapon touted for its ability to stop protesters dead in their tracks, while causing no permanent injuries. The San Francisco Bay Guardian first reported in April on the “Active Denial System,” which has been 10 years and some $40 million in the making. According to author Martin Lee, a special transmitter fires two-second bursts of focused microwave energy that causes burning sensations on the skin of people up to 700 yards away, resulting in brief but intense pain and confusion, and prompting the unruly and disobedient hordes to vacate the area posthaste. Because the beam only penetrates the skin’s surface to a depth of 1/64th of an inch, it leaves no telltale burns, bruises or unseemly bikini strap lines. Although the “Active Denial System” is still in the experimental stage (hand-held models coming soon!), it’s reportedly being field-tested already on personnel at the Kirkland Air Force Base in New Mexico (giving new meaning to the slogan, “Aim high! Air Force!”) Critics of the weapon argue that at close range, this modified microwave oven “could cook a person’s eyeballs.” Others express concern about the possible long-term consequences, such as cancer and cataracts. OK, so setting your phasers to stun isn’t wowing the client? How about the latest in “stench warfare?” The Pentagon —yes, the Feng Shui in that five-sided building sure produces some hair-brained ideas—announced recently that it’s developing a stinkbomb powerful enough to drive away the most virulent WTO and NAFTA opponents. The Guardian reported last month that researchers on this project are focusing on the neurological link between smell and fear, and believe that by formulating an odor that activates tissue deep in the brain they can induce panic in the ranks of protesters. This may also be seen as turning the tables on protesters in Europe, who have been known to take lion dung from zoos and safari parks and hurl it at police horses, who panic at the lion’s scent and throw their riders. BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU By: Barbara Stanley I live on the east coast, in the state of New York and we have toll roads, tunnels and bridges. Recently the toll has been raised to $6 per trip. The cost is two dollars cheaper if you use EZ PASS - an electronic monitor that registers as you go through the tollbooth where the signal is picked up by the scanner. For the last few years, as I travel to the New Jersey ocean, I have noticed that the exact change or token lanes are scattered about in a random pattern from toll plaza (plaza? -newspeak for parking lot that occurs during many driving hours as folks try to find the right lane) to next, with more and more EZ PASS lanes designated. It is interesting that on one particular trip, the traffic jam was actually from one toll to the next. Yikes. There we sit, waiting to get chits, or toss coins or tokens, as the EZ PASS drivers move on by, talk about incentive to switch from money to electronic signals. The EZ PASS lanes are inconsistently placed from toll plaza to toll plaza, insuring an that even a greater circus takes place wasting even more time. Soon we can expect the class warfare of some drivers hating those who are not ‘up to speed’, (figuratively and literally) and I do not for one minute think this is coincidental. You want to get to the job on time? Then get in step, get in line, no talking and if you err, here come the authorities to hold you up for ridicule. And now, with the tolls being raised just recently, the enrollment in the EZ PASS system of tracking is on the rise. What is the commuter to do? Gotta get to work and so they either pay considerably more or join up in the new age of monitoring that the socialists foist upon us. In the rush to make a living and pay the taxman, we are being driven through the cattle gates to the slaughter of our freedoms and if we don’t wake up and wake up now, we will all be lost in the flush. I also learned that some years back, chips were placed in newer cars which allowed them to be tracked and also allowed an outside source to cut the engine, effectively denying the freedom of moving from place to place as they pursue happiness. Now, I am none too happy with having to have a driver’s license, registration, insurance and now the switchover to electronic monitoring either. And it is sold to us as a boon, to help us when we are lost or to retrieve stolen autos. Gee, who wouldn’t want their car back in a damn hurry when it is stolen? And, God forbid, what if the car is hijacked and your little junior is in the back car seat? Now, this doesn’t really involve me for my cars have a combined total age of thirty-nine years, not new cars either of them by any stretch of the imagination. But I was alarmed when I heard the rumours that Christy Whitman, then governor of New Jersey, was working on legislation that would make any car over a certain age illegal — and you guessed it — my car won't qualify! Whereas some believe older cars are major polluters, my cars are kept running well and do not add any measure of note to the usual emissions. And now I learn that thumbprints are required in some places and this worries me. What’s next? Urine sample? DNA via epithelial cells from cheek scrapings? Can I expect to obtain a driver’s license only after saying ah? Incrementalism, that’s the ticket! First begin these intrusive practices in large cities, where all the folks in a hurry live and then spread them out to the rest of us in the provinces. Not a good sign for the rights of privacy, the freedom to travel, is it? Soon we can expect to be monitored in all we do, tracked in all we buy and controlled from cradle to grave. “Papers please” will soon replace, “have a nice day’ as we go about our daily lives and living la vida loca will be the tune we hum as blackshirts and armed border guards patrol all our roads. Did I wake up in the USSR? Seems to me that communism is not only not dead, but alive and thriving in the sheep’s clothing of the ‘caring socialist’. Pretty soon “it’s for the children” will be replaced with “it’s for your own good.” Not bloody likely for our own good, not at all, but for the good of a police state. Coming soon: taxes on travel added to the taxes we pay constantly every day. Pursuit of happiness? Obviously nothing more than a fond memory, if things continue in this path. What a jury will be asked to decide, attorneys said Wednesday in opening arguments of Perry's first-degree-murder trial, is whether he was insane at the time or deliberately killed Gabriel Perry as the first step in a plan to wipe out his family and himself. Kent was driven to the point where he lost his mind, and his son by his own hand, Jeffrey Myer, a deputy Maricopa County public defender, told jurors. Perry, he said, heard a voice that told him to kill his son. Tom Simon, a deputy county attorney prosecuting Perry, 42, detailed events that he believes show that Perry planned the murder and also wanted to kill his wife, Dahna Larsen, and a baby son at a Phoenix clinic where the woman was undergoing treatment for drug dependency. Perry also is charged with four counts of aggravated assault in connection with threats made against clinic residents with a gun and in the shooting of another resident in a scuffle. Shortly after Perry was arrested Aug. 7, 1985, at New Arizona Family Inc., 1320 N. Second Street, his son was found dead in Perry's pickup truck, which was parked a half-block away from the clinic. The family dog also had been shot dead. Simon told a story of a family in turmoil, of problems that ultimately led to the death of Perry's son near Interstate 17 by Happy Valley Road in west Phoenix: Perry and Larsen started living together in August 1984 on a ranch outside Prescott. Their son, Jess, was born the next April. For weeks, their woodcutting business had been plagued with problems. In addition, Larsen was fighting a drug dependency, while Perry battled with alcohol. The relationship became strained, Simon said. In July, Larsen left Perry and checked into New Arizona for a long-term drug-treatment program. Perry saw Larsen for the last time on Aug. 4, when she came to the ranch to pick up her property. The next day, he started drinking, and his son called an uncle in Phoenix, who picked up his nephew and took him home with him. On Aug. 7, Perry drove to Phoenix and picked up his son. He had a sawed-off shotgun and a .44-caliber revolver in the pickup truck, Simon said. Perry gave Gabriel the shotgun for the purpose of distracting him, took the .44-caliber revolver, put it to the back of Gabriel's head and shot him, the prosecutor said. Perry drove to the New Arizona clinic and confronted three residents, demanding to know where he could find Larsen. A resident, Gary Prior, grabbed the gun, and other residents scuffled with Perry. They managed to disarm him. Myer said questions arise, not over whether Perry committed the crimes, but over Perry's state of mind that day. He suggested that mounting business and personal difficulties made Perry snap. Dazed by daily reports of terror, concerned Jews are largely at a loss as to how they can help, even in some small way, during this difficult period. Such feelings are entirely understandable, for one often gets the sense that no matter what Israel seems to do, its predicament only grows worse. But such thinking is neither productive nor beneficial, because the last thing the Jewish people need right now is despair. Instead, we must all focus our energies on doing what we can to lift Israel's spirits and help it contend with an increasingly volatile and uncertain situation. Though far from revolutionary, here are some simple and practical suggestions as to what you can do to help. They are what I refer to as the S even 'P's of Jewish activism: 1) Point and Click The first task is to better educate ourselves and our communities about events in Israel. The Internet provides a range of useful sources for getting a more accurate picture of what is really happening in the Jewish state. A few useful sites are: the Jerusalem Post (http://www.jpost.com) and IMRA (http://www.imra.org.il). Visit such sites and recommend them to friends -- you will be amazed at how people's eyes can be opened when they start to get the real picture about what is going on. 2) Publish Your Views Once you have a better grasp of the facts, don't hesitate to speak out. No Jewish organization or Israeli consulate can fight the propaganda war on every front, so don't assume that they will. Pick up your pen, or your keyboard, and start writing. Whether it is a letter to the editor of your local newspaper, or an ongoing dialogue in a chat room, you never know how your contribution may affect someone else's views. Share your success stories with others, and turn yourself and your friends into roving ambassadors on Israel's behalf. 3) Protest Media Bias The mainstream media is replete with anti-Israel bias and sloppy reporting. Don't let them get away with it. If you see something that offends you, let the editor know, tersely and politely. For resources and ideas on combating media bias, check out: Honest Reporting (http://www.honestreporting.com), CAMERA (http://www.camera.org) and CNN-Watch (http://www.cnnwatch.org). 4) Provide Assistance If you able to provide financial support, there are many worthwhile organizations working to address the problems caused by the intifada. The Israel Crisis Management Center, based in Tel Aviv (phone: 972-3-544-5161), assists new immigrants who have been victimized by terrorist attacks, including the families of those killed in the Tel Aviv disco bombing, with grants, loans and volunteer counseling. A group called Helping Israel (http://www.helpingisrael.com) has an extensive list of medical and security supplies required by Jewish communities that have borne the brunt of the Palestinian violence, such as those in Judea, Samaria and Gaza. Sending money, even in small sums, is a tangible and meaningful way of demonstrating your support. 5) Pressure Representatives Wherever you live, your views as a citizen need to be heard by your elected representatives. In many instances, American congressional offices keep tabs on the quantity of mail they receive on particular issues as a way of measuring their relative importance to their constituency. Find out who your elected officials are and urge them to publicly express their support for Israel during these difficult times. 6) Pay A Visit The recent flap over the cancellation of Israel summer programs had a sharply negative impact on relations between Israel and the Diaspora. There is no better way to demonstrate your solidarity than by boarding a plane and paying a visit to the Holy Land. Yasser Arafat needs to know that he cannot succeed in scaring Jews away, and your visit will help to send him that message. 7) Pray for Help The Jewish people have always turned to their Father in Heaven as a source of strength and support. No prayer goes to waste, and regardless of your level of observance, consider adding a request for Israel to your regular (or even irregular) prayer regimen. Whether in the privacy of your home or on the pews of your local synagogue, make the crisis in Israel the focus of your thoughts. While these suggestions may not offer a panacea to all of Israel's ills, they do provide each of us with a practical means of fending off frustration and doing something concrete to improve the situation. The modern state of Israel is tracking towards Nazism (of course it is not the only country doing this). Too many Israeli's have a Nazi mentality towards the Palestinians - they consider the Palestinians an inferior people: racially, culturally, religiously, economically, etc. They have become the Pre WWII European Slavs according to the German Nazi mindset. Too many Israeli's see arab land as natural expansion territory or in other words lebenstraum. Once you dehumanize a group, it is much easier to kill them. How did the Nazis take control in Germany? By convincing the German people that they were their only salvation...that Germany was besieged on all sides by enemies out to destroy Germany (of course the Nazis did everything in their power to provoke social disruption and cause a self fulfilling prophecy). How To Fly Without ID In the last two years, everyone flying on a commercial airline has stepped up to an airline's ticket counter and heard the agent recite a familiar litany. The monologue goes, has your bag been unattended; have you accepted gifts from a stranger; can I see your identification please? The traveler docilely murmurs answers, and produces a driver's license or some equivalent. As a die-hard Constitutionalist, I believe that we still have an absolute, unfettered, God-given right to travel from point A to point B without permission from the state -- in the air, as well as on land. This Nazi procedure of your papers, please has never been appropriate for our country. I have had occasion to travel a good deal in the last several months, and on those trips I decided to research and test this issue about the necessity for producing identification. I have talked with agents, and their supervisors, of several major airlines in cities across America, and have gradually pieced together a rather complete picture of the real legal situation regarding our right to travel. Next, I tested this finding with several airlines. When asked for identification, I produced only my Sam's Club card, or my travel agent's ID card, or a Costco card. These are all picture ID's, but they are privately issued, and do not even have a signature on them. The airline agents just freaked out, and demanded to see some state-issued ID. They routinely told me that it was federal law! The government absolutely required me to cough up an official ID card, without which the agent couldn't even THINK of letting me on the plane. I told the agents that I could not find any federal regulation mandating that type of identification, and then asked them to cure my ignorance and please cite the regulation. Now, at this point, individual airline agents have reacted differently. Some called in their supervisor. Alaska Air employees were the most gracious; Northwest agents were the worst -- they were rude, belligerent and hostile brats. But they all folded, every time. A particularly nasty Northwest employee marched me all the way back to the electronic detection equipment, made me pass through it a second time, and had the guard thoroughly search my carry-on bag. The same airline agent-from-hell actually made rude and demeaning remarks to me as we trudged back to the counter -- and then she let me on the plane. Alaska Air was much more reasonable -- the agent just issued my seat pass, and commented that some people seem tenaciously to hold the thought that they have the right to travel without producing government ID -- to which I responded, yes, amazing, isn't it -- and I'm one of them. In Seattle, an agent said AS HE HANDED ME MY TICKET, you know, if you don't show me any government-issued ID, I can't let you board the plane. I replied, Yes, I understand. But I didn't, and you are. With a smile, he just said, have a nice trip. So I have flown several times using only my meager privately issued picture ID cards. Every time I used this strategy, I noticed that the agent put an orange sticker on my checked bags, and also on my seat pass on the ticket. Several agents divulged that this is the policy they are supposed to follow when a person does not show government ID. The bags simply wait in the baggage room until the person presents the matching seat pass as he/she actually boards the plane; then the bags go on board. On my next trip, I decided to push the envelope even further. When the Alaska Air agent made the usual perfunctory request for identification, I put on my best face, smiled sweetly, and said, Gee, I'm so sorry, but I just don't have any ID I could show you. To my speechless astonishment, the agent just said, no problem -- just fill out this simple form, and present it to the counter at the airplane gate. watched as the familiar orange sticker again went on my bag. I repeated the same scenario with Horizon Air on another trip. I have now flown twice without producing any identification whatsoever. Northwest was actually instrumental in advancing my education about this issue. I was so aggravated by the insolent and hostile treatment that their employee gave me, (hopefully former employee, after the blistering letter I sent to the company president), that I demanded to see a supervisor on the spot. I then demanded that he produce the relevant federal regulations RIGHT NOW, or face personal liability for authorizing an unreasonable search and seizure, dereliction of duty, fraud, conspiracy, civil rights deprivation and any other legal buzz words I could think of at that moment which would justify a lawsuit against him personally, as well as his employer. Like everyone else, he couldn't show me any statute or regulations. He even admitted that there are none. However, he did produce a copy of Security Directive 96-05, which the Federal Aviation Agency issued
