German prostitutes win full legal rights
A HISTORIC law passed in Germany yesterday gives members of the
worlds oldest profession the same legal rights and protections as
those in societys most modern industries.
Parliament voted to give prostitutes equal legal rights and to make
them eligible for health benefits, social security and even paid
holidays.
The so-called Tarts Charter had been pushed for the past year by
the Green Party, a member of the coalition government, and seeks to
smash the power of criminal gangs controlling the highly profitable
business in Germany.
More than a million men a day visit a prostitute in the country,
generating an estimated £3 billion a year in untaxed earnings.
The new law seeks to break taboos and bring the unregulated workforce
into the social security fold. Many prostitutes complained they
cannot obtain health insurance or send their children to a particular
school because of their trade.
But the bill passed despite strong objections by the conservative CDU
party.
A Social Democrat MP, Ammi Brandt-Elsweiler, said: The majority of the country
believe prostitution is not immoral and with this law we send a signal spelling the
end of a taboo and bringing a whole section of society th
e right they have long deserved.
Brothel keepers will have to pay health and employment taxes for their employees and
the women will be able to declare what they do for a living on government forms.
The CDU was the lone dissenting voice, with one member, Maria Eichorn, saying: This
does nothing to assist those women still in the grip of the prostitution mafia and it
doesnt improve the situation of prostitutes who c
annot escape their circumstances.

BSE scientists studied the wrong brains
SCIENTISTS at Edinburghs prestigious animal health institute were
under pressure to resign last night after it emerged that a five-year
study into BSE in sheep was wasted because they studied cattle
brains, not sheep brains.
The spectacular blunder, which went unnoticed for five years, now
means that the study to determine whether BSE had spread to the
national sheep flock is worthless.
All the test results will now have to be scrapped, leaving consumers
no nearer to knowing whether it is safe to eat lamb. Last month the
government announced that the national flock would have to be
slaughtered if sheep were found to be infected but now it is
impossible to tell whether that has happened.
Professor Chris Bostock, director of the Institute of Animal Health,
said: I am flabbergasted, devastated.
Urgent inquiries into the mix-up have been launched at the institute
and at the national Department for Environment, Food and Rural
Affairs.
But Margaret Beckett, the agriculture minister, faced demands last night that she
launch a public inquiry and sack the people who were responsible.
The blunder only came to light when samples of the brain material were sent to the
Laboratory of the Government Chemist for DNA analysis.
It meant that results from the study, which took five years and cost £217,000, were
completely uninterpretable, Professor Peter Smith, chairman of the Spongiform
Encephalopathy Advisory Committee (SEAC) said. Data appea
ring to show signs of BSE infection in sheep were due to be presented to SEAC
yesterday but had to be withdrawn.
The experiment was crucial because it was supposed to reveal whether or not sheep as
well as cattle acquired BSE in the late 1980s. Prof Smith said: It appears to have
been a dreadful mistake. I think its too early yet
to conclude that the study was a complete waste of time, but it does look like that
might be the case.
The scientists at the Institute of Animal Health were conducting more than one study,
and had collected brain material from both sheep and cattle.
Prof Smith said: Once its a paste a cow brain looks very like a sheep brain. Thats
no excuse, however - the samples should have been properly labelled - but you cant
tell them apart just from their appearance.
Its hard to come to any other conclusion than that a serious error was made.
The experiment involved testing for BSE in what was thought to be 2,860 brains from
sheep which had died of scrapie between 1990 and 1992.
It involved injecting brain material into laboratory mice and seeing if they developed
an illness which bore the hallmarks of BSE.
Scrapie is a sheep disease related to BSE but, unlike the cattle
illness it cannot be transmitted to humans.

In an attempt to begin to understand what actually happened both on the surface and behind the scenes, this issue of THE INFORMED AMERICAN brings you a compilation of selected essays and articles on the events of September 11, 2001. To put some recent, related events in perspective before continuing, it is now well known that the Murrah Building in Oklahoma City collapsed from strategically placed internal demolition charges, detonated simultaneously along with the ANFO 'show' bomb in the Ryder truck parked out front. Who placed those internal charges? Who financed the operatives? Cui bono? It is also well known that TWA Flight 800 -- the 'exploding center fuel tank' myth notwithstanding -- was hit by a missile fired from a boat which then sped away, as seen by satellite surveillance and literally hundreds of eyewitnesses along the Long Island coastline whom the FBI never bothered to interview. Who fired the missile? And was it one of the shoulder-launched varieties known to be missing from U.S. military inventory? It is less well known that U.S. intelligence agency operatives entered the Waco church during the early phases of the contrived conflagration to assassinate uncooperative CIA 'sleeper' Vernon Howell and other ranking church officials, all of whom were later found at autopsy to have single gunshot wounds to the back of the head. These "wet ops" commandos then directed automatic weapons fire against terrified Davidians fleeing the back of the church. Was this a CIA operation gone awry? Did the FBI lie to us during televised press briefings being conducted while the "siege" was still underway? For the facts, read Attorney Paul Wilcher's explosive letter to Janet Reno in which he informed the Attorney General that several intelligence operatives were willing to come forward and tell the truth about Waco and other covert operations, but that their lives would need protecting. Several weeks after mailing that letter, Paul Wilcher was found dead in his apartment, sitting on the toilet. He had been dead of a "heart attack" for days before being placed there. It is even less well known that JFK Jr.’s plane exploded seconds before diving into the Atlantic, as also viewed by witnesses on Martha's Vineyard who to this day have still not been interviewed by the FBI. Could the same machievellian forces who murdered the father have also murdered the son, 40 years later? Bottom line: Is it possible that Americans continue to be attacked by enemies both within and without? And is truth once again the first victim? The intricately designed World Trade Center skyscrapers were built to withstand hurricane winds, earthquakes and direct impact by high speed jetliners -- but they were not designed to withstand implosions. Once the support columns in a building have been severed, it cannot stand. Hence, the fascinating implosion coverage we’ve all see on television when an obsolete building is brought down, smooth as silk, by timed demolition charges -- often right in the middle of a dense downtown area. There is no collateral damage. It just drops is place. All that remains is a cloud of dust. The WTC towers were also designed to suppress infernos through an extensive fire repression system using a chemically-treated watered sprinkler system supplied from enormous gravity-fed rooftop reservoirs. A half-hour after the second tower was struck, the fire in the first building had already gone out -- still smoldering and emitting thick black smoke, but with no flame visible. Yet with no such fire-suppression system in place, the crash at the Pentagon burned for hours. Suddenly, just a short time apart, and as if out of nowhere, both buildings suddenly begin to spontaneously collapse in smoothly traveling waves, at equal speeds, from the top of each building down. WALD ASHINGTON, Oct. 19 The Federal Bureau of Investigation is looking into whether a United Airlines flight scheduled to leave Kennedy International Airport for San Francisco was a target of hijackers on Sept. 11, aviation and law enforcement officials said. The United plane, Flight 23, was late pushing back from the gate and was seventh in line for takeoff when Kennedy was closed because of the terrorist attacks. When the captain announced that the plane was returning to the gate, four male passengers described as Middle Eastern in appearance stood up and began urgently consulting with each other, two aviation officials said. The men refused orders from flight attendants to return to their seats, the officials said. The cockpit crew did not wait for the men to be seated but decided to taxi back to the gate anyway, the officials said. As soon as the door opened, these four guys bolted, said one of the officials. The other added that the F.B.I. later interviewed the crew about the incident. Law enforcement officials confirmed that the F.B.I. is investigating the incident. A United spokesman refused to comment, except to say that the passenger list had been turned over to investigators. Like two of the four planes that were hijacked that day, the Kennedy plane was a Boeing 767, and like all four, it was scheduled for a transcontinental flight. Its scheduled departure time, 8:30, was within the time range of the four hijacked flights. The question of whether hijackers had intended to take over more than four flights on Sept. 11 has been the subject of confused speculation in the last few days. On Wednesday, the head of the Federal Aviation Administration, Jane F. Garvey, said in a speech that her agency's quick grounding of commercial air traffic nationwide had thwarted other hijackings. But later in the day she said she had no evidence of other planned attacks and was relying partly on news reports of knives being found on other airplanes. Other flights using Boeing 757's and 767's are under scrutiny because all four planes hijacked were of those two models. On the morning of Sept. 11, when the number of planes hijacked was still not clear, federal officials took a quick count of 757's and 767's still airborne and told air- traffic controllers to watch them for any unusual behavior. In the days after Sept. 11, rumors and reports have swept the F.A.A. and airlines about possible additional targets, including an Air Canada flight scheduled to go from Toronto to La Guardia Airport, and an American Airlines flight at Kennedy waiting to take off for London, although the evidence for those cases appears to be circumstantial. The Air Canada plane was scheduled to fly from Toronto to La Guardia but was caught on the ground by the closing of American airspace. On Sept. 14, when the plane was scheduled to fly to Calgary, Alberta, a passenger spotted two knives in an overhead baggage compartment. But speaking to reporters in Washington on Tuesday, Herb Gray, the deputy prime minister of Canada, said that it was not clear when the knives were put on the plane, and that they weren't the big box cutters believed to be used by the hijackers of the other planes. An Air Canada spokesman described them as X-acto-type knives, saying that they had small, retractable blades. The Air Canada plane was impounded by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police but then released. It was an Airbus A-320, which is considerably smaller than the 757's and 767's that were hijacked, and has a far different control system. Some aviation officials also believe that American Airlines Flight 142, which was due to take off from Kennedy for London at 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 11, was also a target. That plane was delayed at the gate when the cockpit crew asked for a mechanic to check a valve in an engine. When a delay was announced, one passenger asked to leave, so the cabin door was opened for him and closed again. Then, according to aviation officials, a second passenger also demanded to leave, and became rude and indignant when the door could not be opened immediately. A cockpit crew member wanted to alert the F.B.I. immediately but did not know the passenger's name, the officials said. The flight attendants knew the man's identity, but they had been escorted out of the airport with the passengers. Florida On October 2, the Palm Beach County Health Department (PBCHD) and the Florida Department of Health (FDOH) were notified of a possible anthrax case in Palm Beach County. The suspected case was identified when a gram stain of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) revealed a gram-positive bacilli. An epidemiologic investigation was initiated by FDOH, PBCHD, and the FDOH state laboratory. The state laboratory and CDC confirmed B. anthracis from a culture of CSF on October 4. Later the same day, FDOH and CDC epidemiologists and laboratory workers arrived in Palm Beach County to assist PBCHD with the investigation. As of October 16, two confirmed cases of inhalational anthrax have been identified. The index patient was a 63-year-old male resident of Palm Beach County who sought medical care at a local hospital on October 2 with fever and altered mental status. Despite antibiotic therapy, his clinical condition deteriorated rapidly, and he died on October 5. An autopsy performed on October 6 confirmed the cause of death as inhalational anthrax. An investigation revealed no obvious exposures to B. anthracis. On October 1, the second patient, a 73-year-old co-worker of the index patient, was admitted to a local hospital for pneumonia. On October 5, a nasal swab was obtained from the patient that yielded a positive culture for B. anthracis. Subsequent testing revealed positive PCR tests for B. anthracis in hemorrhagic pleural fluid and reactive serologic tests. The patient remains hospitalized on antibiotic therapy. Enhanced case finding and retrospective and prospective surveillance systems were initiated in Palm Beach, and surrounding counties. Environmental assessments and sampling were performed at the index patient's home, work site, and travel destinations for the 60 days preceding symptom onset. Environmental sampling revealed B. anthracis contamination of the work site, specifically implicating mail or package delivery. Environmental samples of other locations the patient visited, including extensive sampling of his home, were negative. Questionnaires were administered to employees at the index patient's work site. Postexposure prophylaxis was administered, and nasal swabs were obtained from those with exposure to the work site for 1 hour since August 1. STATEMENT
In the center of the attention of the World today is the struggle against
terrorism. However, this phenomenon cannot be considered connected to the
terrorist acts in the USA only, without taking in consideration the
circumstances of growing terrorism in the Balkans. In Kosovo in 1998-1999 there
was no violation of the rights of the national minorities in the way western politicians and media have presented. The World has faced the
aggressive armed separatism that chose terror as its main weapon.
The Albanian terrorist army
- KLA, having got in 1998 a wide support from the USA and its allies,
participated in the NATO aggression against Yugoslavia. At the same time, KLA
was having direct links with the
international terrorist network. Osama Bin Laden has been in 1998 in
Albania. The American
representative R. Hollbrooke was informed about that.
The tragic events in Bosnia, Kosovo, Chechnya, Macedonia, New York - are all links in the same chain. The
terrorist acts there have been organized by the very same
forces.
At the very source of these events are the USA, that have trained,
financed and armed the international terrorist network and gave it its political
and military support. Now, when the Americans are calling the World to unite in
the struggle against terror, they should be looking for the roots of this
phenomenon in their own house first
- in Washington.
On the other side, President Slobodan Milosevic has fought namely against
terrorism defending the people of his country, including the Albanians as well.
Nevertheless, the open support of the West to Albanian terrorism, the
demonization of Serbia and of Slobodan Milosevic, have brought to the defeat of
antiterrorist forces in the FRY and to turmoils in
Macedonia.
The World community, considering the circumstances, should reconsider its
own assessments on the events in Yugoslavia.
We
call upon the Parliaments and Governments of the member-countries of the United
Nations Security Council with the appeal that the so-called International
Criminal Tribunal for Former Yugoslavia (ICTY), founded in
violation of the UN Charter, stops its activities. That so-called tribunal is in
fact defending Albanian extremists who have committed monstrous crimes in
Kosovo. ICTY has not presented not
even one charge against Kosovo Albanians who have committed crimes against
humanity.
We demand for a halt of the persecution of President Milosevic and his
fellow-fighters who fought against terrorism, for safeguarding the integrity of
the country in full accordance with the FRY Constitution.
Slobodan Milosevic, who has been at the forefront of the resistance to
terrorism in the Balkans, must be
freed immediately.

He contends that all regional powers are focusing increasingly on how to protect or enlarge their access to vital resources over the next generation. Klare tells RFE/RL that vast energy reserves in Central Asia and the Caucasus have made the region a priority for the United States despite the area's generally poor progress in post communist reforms. I think in this case this is a national security consideration that's driving all of this. The United States has to get that oil from that region [Central Asia] and will make a deal with whatever governments are there in place that are willing to work with us [that is, the US], like the government[s] in Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan that are far from ideal with respect to human rights and democratic procedure. And I think that's a reflection of the view that I write about in my book--we [the US] view oil as a security consideration and we have to protect it by any means necessary, regardless of other considerations, other values. I will argue that the current US government focus on Afghanistan is part of the oil security consideration. The following is my attempt to make sense of the Afghan energy connection. The US government Energy Information fact sheet on Afghanistan dated December 2000 says that, Afghanistan's significance from an energy standpoint stems from its geographic position as a potential transit route for oil and natural gas exports from Central Asia to the Arabian Sea. This potential includes proposed multi-billion dollar oil and gas export pipelines through Afghanistan, although these plans have now been thrown into serious question These pipelines would begin in the former Soviet Republic of Turkemenistan, which may have one of the largest gas deposits in the world. The Washington Post reported in a 1998 article that In August 1997, in a bold move that conjured up memories of 19th-century Turkmen khans staving off would-be Russian conquerors, President (of Turkemenistan) Saparmurad Niyazov halted gas deliveries to the Russian-controlled pipeline system that was built during the Soviet era. The Post goes on to say that Turkmenistan's potential was enormous. Just inland from the Caspian shore were some of the world's oldest oil fields, and Soviet-era geological surveys indicated that the prospect for offshore finds was good. In the trackless Garagum Desert, away from a thin line of irrigated valleys, geologists had discovered one gas field after another beginning in the 1960s. 10-20-01, 0900 PDT We have been receiving e-mails from all over the world that the FTW web site at www.copvcia.com is showing a "Forbidden" message and is unavailable. This is correct. At present all we are able to determine is that the server has shut us down. We have not been able to verify any government involvement as yet. We must eliminate the possibility that we have been shut down due to the enormous amount of traffic (over 6,000) visitors a day) that we have been receiving in the last week. I have called the FBI here in L.A. and expressed concern. Their response was that I should contact the server. If it is disclosed that a government agency has shut down the site their advice was that I just start calling all of the several hundred government agencies that might be involved and ask them if they know anything. This is developing and we are not ruling out the possibility that this unannounced blockage is a result of a story I posted yesterday regarding the possible presence of terrorist-operated Surface to Air missiles in the U.S. We will keep you posted... The Lord is getting ready to shake this nation. We have not yet seen his judgment on America, Robertson told a crowd at the 40th anniversary of his Christian Broadcast Network on Oct 1. As a teaser to what God has in store for the nation unless it undergoes a spiritual revival, Robertson said, This thing that happened in New York was child's play compared to what's going to happen. Robertson undoubtedly has it on good authority. But if the Almighty is going to get us for what we've done -- or failed to do -- as a nation, what in the world might God have in store for Pat Robertson and his friend and business partner, Liberian President Charles Taylor, the plague of West Africa. Chances are the families and friends of five women from Illinois are also dying to know. Meet Sister Kathleen McGuire, 54. She was among a group of five nuns working with Liberia's poor in October 1992, when then-warlord Taylor and his rebels launched their surprise attack on Monrovia. The terror was led by Taylor's boy soldiers, 10- to 18-year-olds, some armed with AK-47s, some wigged out on drugs. Sister Kathleen was best known for her hospitality and work with children traumatized by rockets, mortars and wanton murder. Among the nuns at the convent in Gardnersville, a suburb of Monrovia, Sister Kathleen was the first to die. Two days earlier, Sister Kathleen, along with Sister Shirley Kolmer, 61, and Sister Agnes Mueller, 62, had packed a car with some belongings and gathered their aspirants or candidates for the novitiate for a dash to Monrovia. With bullets flying and the situation deteriorating, they should have abandoned the convent long before. But the people they were serving had nowhere to go. So the nuns stayed with their aspirants and the small coterie of refugees who had sought protection in the convent. Sister Shirley, their leader, was the jovial one; she taught math, was a woman of prayer and a friend and companion to young women. Sister Agnes was a nurse, loved to read and was conducting literacy programs. They worked with infants suffering from tropical diseases prevalent in Liberia. But they were unprepared for what came next. Taylor's rebels arrived at the convent on Oct. 23, 1992 -- exactly nine years ago next Tuesday. Five of them entered the grounds. One was called Foday. Another, C. O. Mosquito. A third, Black Devil. Foday and Devil were in their teens; Mosquito was in his early twenties. Mosquito ordered everybody out of the convent, announcing that all white people would be killed. Sister Shirley begged him not to do it. They didn't listen. Devil's first bullet hit Sister Kathleen, as she tried to reason with him. It struck her in the forearm, knocking her down on the bare dirt. He walked up to the wounded and bleeding Kathleen and put a bullet into the back of her head. Then came Sister Shirley. She was told to turn over the car keys and any money she had. Sister Shirley went inside, got the keys and her Liberian dollars, and offered them to Mosquito. The keys were fine, but he wanted American dollars, which she didn't have. The group was herded outside the convent fence, and the two nuns were separated from the rest. Devil again did the dirty deed, mowing down Sister Shirley and Sister Agnes with his AK-47. The aspirants and refugees were marched off to Taylor's headquarters. Sister Joel Kolmer, 58, and Sister Barbara Ann Muttra, 69, had left the convent three days earlier to drive their worried security guard to his home where he could be reunited with his family. They never made it. Their car was ambushed; everybody was murdered. The American Embassy later found the decomposed bodies of the two nuns and the security guard covered with tarpaulins where they had fallen outside their car. Embassy staff and peacekeeping soldiers didn't make their way to Gardnersville until Dec. 1, after the area was finally secured. Arab rulers, though appalled by the attacks on September 11, have tried to avoid endorsing the US-led operations against the Taleban so as not to inflame public opinion. But the appeasement of Islamist militancy is proving a mistake. Countries that tolerate terrorist networks put themselves at risk; and militant anti-Western incitement now threatens virtually all established rulers in the Middle East. None is more exposed than the House of Saud. Its destruction is a main aim of Osama bin Laden, whose al-Qaeda has vowed to drive Western crusader forces from the Arabian Peninsula. Yet the Saudi Royal Family rests its legitimacy on its role as the guardian of Mecca and Medina, the upholder of Islamic values and the guarantor of a paternalistic State. In an unprecedented warning to security officials, Prince Nayef, the Interior Minister, denounced the sick extremists who hid in caves, abused security in the name of Islam and misled ordinary people. No one would be allowed to outbid us on Islam, he added, nor would the Government tolerate dictation from outside. His words were reinforced by the arrest of around 100 leading Islamist activists, the violent dispersal of demonstrators in Mecca and the ban on any cleric declaring jihad. Yassir Arafat also is compelled to choose between decisive action or likely overthrow. Ariel Sharon has given the Palestinian leader seven days in which to hand over the assassins of Rehavam Zeevi. Otherwise, the Israeli Prime Minister made clear that the Israelis will reoccupy all the West Bank, deal with the killers themselves and reimpose closures, curfews and iron rule in the occupied territories. The killing, he said, changed everything. Israel has now concluded that the Arafat era is over and that any further talks with him are useless. Some Cabinet ministers are calling for his expulsion from the Palestinian territories. Mr Arafat knows that Israel has the military strength and determination to carry out such a threat. No Arab state is able or likely to respond for days, if at all. Tanks already ring Ramallah. Israeli troops are firing on demonstrators. Token arrests will not satisfy Israel. 10/17/2001 - Updated 11:14 PM ET U.S. requesting 300M smallpox vaccines By Julie Appleby, USA TODAY The U.S. government wants to order 300 million doses of a new smallpox vaccine, more than seven times the number originally requested, Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson said Wednesday. Thompson has asked British firm Acambis to produce 54 million doses, up from its contract for 40 million, and is negotiating with other drug manufacturers, including giants Baxter and Merck. Officials at Baxter and Merck said they are providing scientific and technical assistance, although neither company is working to produce a vaccine. The surprise announcement came during a press conference at which Thompson and other health officials repeatedly asserted that the USA has plenty of antibiotics with which to fight anthrax. Earlier, Thompson asked Congress for $1.5 billion for bioterrorism efforts, including $509 million to speed development of a smallpox vaccine and $643 million to expand an antibiotic stockpile. Although 300 million doses would be enough to vaccinate the entire U.S. population, Thompson did not call for routine vaccination. Right now all we're doing is preparing the supplemental appropriation to purchase the 300 million doses, Thompson said. The secretary also said pharmaceutical industry leaders have assured us they would work to meet the demand the government might have for medicines in an emergency. Bayer has already tripled production of its anthrax treatment Cipro, expecting to make 200 million tablets during the next 60 days. Acambis was scheduled to deliver the smallpox vaccine in 2004. Thompson says it will be ready next year, although some vaccine experts question whether it can be done that fast. Routine smallpox vaccination ended in 1972, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention retains a stock of 15.4 million doses of vaccine from that era. I think Mayor Giuliani would do well to listen to the words of one of our greatest Americans, former Senator Robert Kennedy. In 1968 he said that America "is a great nation and a strong people. Indeed, on the same day that you made your remarks about US policy in the Middle East, the Chairman of the House International Relations Committee, The Honorable Henry Hyde, spoke on National Public Radio and said, "There's no question in my mind that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is the most important issue in dispute, and has generated a lot of the animosity towards us because of our unwavering support for Israel, which will remain in place." At the same time, CNN played an interview with former National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski who stated that America must "deal with some of the issues that animate the hostility" against us, like "the treatment of the population of Iraq" and that "the Israelis are stronger, so they're naturally inflicting much more casualties than the Palestinians on the Israelis and that produces frustration and rage." Your Royal Highness, many of us here in the United States have long been concerned about reports by Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch that reveal a pattern of excessive, and often indiscriminate, use of lethal force by Israeli security forces in situations where Palestinian demonstrators were unarmed and posed no threat of death or serious injury to the security forces or to others. Israeli peace organizations like B'Tselem accuse the Israeli Defense Forces of violating the most fundamental rules of international law in committing atrocities against Palestinians. The Israeli Gush Shalom boldly states that "Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip is the root cause of the violence and hatred. As long as the occupation continues, bloodshed will continue and increase." Ironically, many of them are Vietnam veterans who, having served this nation with distinction in Vietnam, now find themselves without adequate care and accommodation. Claims that China paid Bin Laden to see cruise missiles John Hooper in Milan Saturday October 20, 2001 The Guardian China paid Osama bin Laden several million dollars for access to unexploded American cruise missiles left over from the US attack on his bases three years ago, a senior alleged al-Qaida agent in Europe has claimed. The alleged agent's account is contained in the transcript of a secretly taped conversation between supporters of Osama bin Laden obtained by the Guardian. His revelation emerged as President Bush yesterday announced that he had won Beijing's support for the war on terrorism. After his first face-to-face meeting with China's President Jiang Zemin in Shanghai, Mr Bush said: "President Jiang and the government stand side by side with the American people as we fight this evil force". The Chinese government has denied it obtained US missiles after the 1998 raid, which was carried out in reprisal for the bombings of the American embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. Beijing is said to have made a deal with al-Qaida to acquire the missiles despite the fact that it was facing a growing threat from Muslim separatists in the Xinjiang region. In 1999, China accused Bin Laden's organisation of training members of the independence movement in guerrilla warfare. The US fired 75 missiles into Afghanistan during the attack on Bin Laden's camps on August 20, 1998. A report four months later in the Pakistani newspaper Ausaf, cited Taliban sources as saying that 40 were found unexploded. The story of what happened next was taken up by Lased Ben Heni in a conversation with associates this year. Ben Heni, a 32-year-old Libyan arrested in Munich last week, is accused by Italian prosecutors of being the liaison officer between two terrorist cells owing allegiance to al-Qaida in Frankfurt and Milan. On March 9, in a rundown flat in the Milan suburb of Gallarate, he met the leader of the Italian cell, Sami Ben Khemais Essid (alias "Saber") and told him of his experiences in Afghanistan visiting Osama bin Laden's camps. Unknown to the two men, the flat had been bugged by officers of the Italian anti-terrorist police. "Perhaps the Americans are convinced by the bombardment of the sheikh's [Bin Laden's] training centres," Ben Heni is quoted as saying. "For them, it was a victory. But, in fact, it was a defeat because the majority of the missiles didn't even explode." After a digression, the transcript continues: "With these weapons, he [Bin Laden] has boosted his financial resources. From every part of the world businessmen who hate Americans have come to study American missile strategy. "In particular, businessmen have come from China. He works a great deal with China. He's got good relations with them. "You see them and you ask 'But what are they doing here?' In the end, you understand that they work for the sheikh and that they came to study these missiles. "Thanks to the money that comes from these studies from outside, he created the army of mohajedin headed by Omar Zayan (or Zaghan) in Chechnya". Later, in a passage the meaning of which is not entirely clear, Ben Heni is heard to say: "When [Bin Laden] saw that the Afghan people, who were dying of hunger, passed missiles to sheikh Messaoud, he bargained with the Chinese and sold them to them for an enormous sum - I think $10m dollars - but only after the sheikh had studied them". The transcript is the first supporting evidence from inside al-Qaida of sporadic reports in the months following the 1998 attack that China had acquired two unexploded Tomahawk missiles. In March 1999, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman described the reports as "groundless". President Jiang told a joint press conference after his meeting with Mr Bush yesterday that they had reached a "consensus" on terrorism, although he urged that the anti-terrorist action should "hit accurately and also avoid innocent casualties".

The ants were first spotted in the Queensland capital, Brisbane, earlier this year and have already been found at 730 sites. They could colonise Australia in the next three decades. They already destroy £1bn of crops every year in the United States. Scientists at the Department of Primary Industries, horrified by the discovery of a pest that they regard as worse than the infamous cane toad, have begun a £50m eradication programme nicknamed "the Big Nuke". Over the next three years, 500 volunteers will blanket the area with bait laced with a chemical that inhibits reproduction. The tiny, reddish-brown ants, which are thought to have arrived in Brisbane on board a container ship, attack humans, livestock, pets, native animals and crops. An aggressive and resilient species, they sting repeatedly and in concert, causing pimple-like spots and an intense burning sensation – hence their name. In rare cases, the sting provokes an allergic reaction that can kill. In the southern United States, infested since the 1930s, 84 people have died. The ants represent a threat to Australia's outdoors way of life. Activities such as camping and barbecues are out of the question in affected areas; even sitting in the back garden with a book can be a painful experience. In some American states, schools, parks and sports fields have had to be closed. Keith McCubbin, head of the eradication programme, said: "This ant is one of the meanest, most evil creatures that God ever put on Earth. It hates every other living thing, and pours out of its nest ready to fight. If it can't be stopped in Queensland, it will be in the backyards of Sydney and Melbourne in the near future. "If that happens, there'll come a time when a lot of us won't be able to have barbecues and picnics, or garden, or mow the lawn. And we won't be wearing thongs [flip-flops] anymore," he added. The fear is that the insects – whose Latin name is Solenopsis invicta, or invincible ant – will spread around the country by hitching lifts on vehicles transporting plants and soil. McDONNELL, Times Staff Writers DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- A probe of the financial backing of the Sept. 11 suicide attacks on the United States has led to bank accounts held by two suspected terrorists and a gleaming silver-and-granite exchange house in a grimy neighborhood of this freewheeling Persian Gulf commercial center. The investigation of the money trail leading to the United Arab Emirates focuses on Mohamed Atta and Marwan Al-Shehhi, two of the suspected plot leaders. Both held bank accounts here before they came to the United States, and they were among three suspected hijackers who wired about $15,000 in cash to the currency exchange on the eve of the attacks. Less than seven hours before the first doomed jetliner was commandeered, the cash transfers were claimed by a man widely suspected of being the conspiracy's paymaster, who then left for Pakistan. The most intriguing financial records uncovered here belong to Atta, the man suspected of coordinating the Sept. 11 attacks. Atta, an Egyptian, maintained an account at a local Citibank branch, according to senior Emirates officials. Al-Shehhi, a native of the Emirates, had an account at a local branch of London-based HSBC Holdings. Though declining to release details, Sultan bin Nasser al Suweidi, head of the central bank here, said Atta's account was busier than normal, with frequent transfers of $10,000 to $15,000. He also said the traffic in the account would provide investigators with a money trail. It is easy in our system to know exactly where the transfers are coming from, Al Suweidi said. The investigators and the FBI, they have everything. Al-Shehhi's account, in contrast, never held much money, according to the banking officials. Welcome Break for U.S. Investigators Details of the transfers into Atta's account or of final destinations of the wire transfers could provide a welcome break for U.S. investigators, who generally have been frustrated in their efforts to track terrorist finances in the Gulf region. The challenges are obvious in Dubai, capital of one of the seven loosely affiliated former sheikdoms that make up the Emirates. One-room exchange houses jostle one another on city streets, some of them advertising that they can send $1 million in cash anywhere in the world in 30 minutes. Ancient wooden dhows that line the creek running through the city's center testify to a long tradition of smuggling across the Persian Gulf. The Emirates government was the biggest shareholder of the Bank of Credit and Commerce International, or BCCI, which was broken up in 1991 for its links with drug dealers and terrorist groups. U.S. officials say Gulf states want to help in the terror investigation but face obstacles. I would not come to the conclusion that there's not an eagerness to help out, said one U.S. official familiar with the region. There's just an unfamiliarity about what to do. Gulf banking systems lack adequate money-laundering laws, manpower and equipment. Some banks are having to hand-search thousands of files. Compounding the problem is the skimpy information provided by the United States in some cases. A list of suspected terrorists whose assets the U.S. has ordered frozen is short some crucial details. Transfers Linked to Bin Laden Associate Both the Al-Shehhi and Atta accounts here were closed well before the Sept. 11 attacks. Atta closed his account and transferred the money to a U.S. bank about the time he and Al-Shehhi arrived in the United States in the summer of 2000. The money trail to the Emirates just before the Sept. 11 attacks consisted of wire transfers to a man identified as Mustafa Ahmad, thought to be a financial officer in Osama bin Laden's Al Qaeda terrorist network. Al-Shehhi wired $5,400 to Ahmad, also known as Shaykh Saiid, shortly before noon on Sept. 10 from a Western Union office at the Greyhound bus terminal in Boston, according to an investigative document obtained by The Times. Separately, suspected hijacker Waleed M. Alshehri sent $5,215 to Ahmad from a currency booth at Boston's Logan Airport on the evening of Sept. 9. Finally, Atta wired money to Ahmad on Sept. 8 and 9. The document is unclear on the amounts, but Al Suweidi said it was like the others, about $5,000. Ahmad picked up the transfers on Sept. 11 from the Al Ansari exchange in Sharja, the main city of one of the northern emirates. The Guardian report came the day after US President George W Bush, in a joint press conference with Chinese President Jiang Zemin, welcomed the Asian nation's firm commitment to the war on terrorism, although Beijing has yet to explicitly endorse the US-led campaign. The daily said that on March 9, a 32-year-old Libyan terrorist suspect met the head of al Qaeda's Italian cell, Sami Ben Khemais, in a Milan flat and told him of China's involvement in the missiles. The suspect, who was arrested in Munich on Wednesday at the request of the Italian authorities in connection with al Qaeda, told Ben Khemais: With these weapons, he (bin Laden) has boosted his financial resources. One of the ways of doing so is the construction of the Central Asian gas pipeline, a promising project that has been in works for almost ten years. The idea to construct a trans-Afghani gas pipeline was born in Ashkhabad in the early 1990s. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, newly independent Turkmenia dreamt of becoming a "gas Kuwait": the country has approximately 2 trillion cubic meters of gas (30% of world deposits). The only problem was the fact that all the existing pipelines ran through Russia's territory. Obviously, Gazprom, the largest exporter of gas in the CIS, was not going to allow Turkmenian gas to be transported to Europe. Therefore, the idea to build a new pipeline emerged. The Argentinean company, Bridas, developed the plan for the pipeline in 1994. The pipeline was to lead to the Pakistani port of Chaman. Islamabad became very interested in the project. The 1300-kilometer pipeline was to transport 1 billion cubic meters of gas a day. There was also a project for building a pipeline to India. China also expressed an interest in the $2 billion project. Afghanistan was at relative peace when the project was being discussed. Turkmenian President Saparmurat Niyazov felt that the U.S. could help to guarantee the construction of the pipeline. He was able to find an American company that became interested in the project: Texan Unocal bought 54% of the consortium, while Bridas was simply dismissed. However, the situation in Afghanistan has changed a great deal. In 1996, the Taliban captured Kabul. Members of the consortium had to negotiate with a new and unpredictable partner. According to Mike Thatcher, a PR director at Unocal, "we have been negotiating with the Taliban and the Northern Alliance. We simply wanted to know when the war in Afghanistan would end and who would finance the project. There was no reply. When the Taliban gave refuge to Osama Bin Laden after he had organized the terrorist acts in Tanzania and Kenya in 1998, we decided to quit the project." There is, however, a different opinion. According to our diplomatic source, "Unocal was not really trying to push the project. The company was simply lying to Ashkhabad. The U.S. is not interested in the Central Asian pipeline. If it is built, Washington will be unable to control the gas market in the region. Unocal was simply an effective tool for preventing this project from being realized." When there is peace in Afghanistan, the idea of the Central Asian gas pipeline is likely to surface again. In a recent interview, the Pakistani ambassador in Moscow, Iftihar Murshed, stated that "the key to solving the Afghani crisis is in economics. The construction of this pipeline could solve some of the economic problems in the region." The only question is whether anyone will be willing to take part in such a risky project. Unocal refuses to do so. According to Thatcher, "we have left the consortium. Our company is a small one; we do not have many resources. As of now, we have a number of projects in Indonesia and China and we would not be able to begin any new ones within the next five years or so." It is also quite unlikely that Bridas will return to the idea. No other company has expressed an interest in the project: the political risks are too high. The Central Asian pipeline that is destined to "pacify" Afghanistan will probably remain a paper project.

In fact, the military says in its new standard that it's boosting civilian GPS quality. The government claims it "now provides civil users a horizontal positioning accuracy of 36 meters, compared to 100-meter accuracy" in the 1995 standard. But as the military campaign against Afghanistan enters its third week, the Defense Department could take steps to limit the usefulness of GPS receivers in the hands of Taliban forces. GPS units receive signals from orbiting satellites and compute their location and what time it is. "We have demonstrated the ability to selectively deny GPS signals on a regional basis, particularly ... when our national security is threatened," said Lt. Jeremy Eggers, a spokesman at Schriever Air Force Base in Colorado. That's home to the 50th Space Wing, which oversees GPS. That would mean only military GPS receivers -- in planes, ships and in the hands of U.S. special forces -- would work within the targeted area. Eggers wouldn't say if a selective denial would be precise enough to hit just Afghanistan, or if neighboring nations like Pakistan and Uzbekistan would be affected too. He'd only say that the "region can be very well defined." Selective availability (SA), which globally degraded the quality of GPS available to civilians, has been turned off since a May 2000 executive order signed by President Clinton. It's been replaced by selective deniability, which allows the military to geographically pinpoint areas should it choose to degrade GPS quality. Pete Brumbaugh, a spokesman for Garmin, a leading manufacturer of civilian GPS devices, said he believed the signal in Afghanistan has already been degraded. "There is probably a significant dithering of the signal over Afghanistan and other areas where there are military operations," Brumbaugh said. But he's found no effects in North America: "We have been monitoring the situation closely to see if there's any fluctuation in the signal and we haven't found any. It shouldn't have any repercussions on areas that aren't affected by the military operations around the world." Even if the United States would change its mind and globally limit the quality of GPS signals, GPS experts say it would have little effect on commercial airliners that use the technology in their navigation systems. Nancy Glass, a spokeswoman for Rockwell Collins, which sells commercial air navigation systems, said: "There would be no consequence if SA was turned on. The separations that are required between aircraft are higher than the difference between SA on and SA off. SA is only 100 meters. The required separation between aircraft is much higher than that -- it's miles."

Emad Jamal Hassan, Yousef al-Amleh and Mohamadkhair Salah were arrested last week in Alberta. The lawyer was speaking during tape-recorded immigration hearings for Hassan and Salah. The hearing for al-Amleh was held behind closed-doors and the recordings were not made public. Hassan and two others are of interest to an ongoing investigation regarding the attack on the World Trade Centre and other related attacks in the United States, lawyer Sylvia Rapaj said. An FBI spokesman from Chicago says two of the men are wanted there in a fraud investigation, with no link to the terrorist attacks. Another FBI official in Washington has refused to comment on whether the men are sought in the terrorism investigation. According to police and court documents, al-Amleh's birth date and fingerprints matched those of a man named Yousef Hassan, wanted in the United States since failing to appear in November 1996, for sentencing on bank fraud in Chicago. In a separate case, Emad Hassan was convicted in November 1998, of defrauding the US government of about $1 million through food stamps. He appealed his sentence, then failed to appear for the hearing. The three men were arrested on immigration charges on October 12. Al-Amleh, 34, was charged with using a false passport to enter Canada, according to Dominique Forget with Citizenship and Immigration. Hassan, 33, and Salah, 42, were also detained, but the specific charges against them were not immediately available. http://www.counterpunch.org/sidahmed1.html October 19, 2001 Bush's Palestinian state By Mohamed Sid-Ahmed A few days before the war against Bin Laden broke out, President Bush announced that "the idea of a Palestinian state has always been part of the US vision in the Middle East, as long as the right of Israel to exist is respected." According to the New York Times and the Washington Post, this statement, the first time ever a Republican American president has acknowledged the need for Palestinian statehood, was part of an initiative the Bush administration was on the verge of announcing before the terrorist attacks of 11 September on New York and Washington. Although there was no mention of Clinton, knowledgeable sources say many of Bush's ideas are similar to those proposed by the former president at Camp David, while avoiding the pitfalls that provoked the breakdown of the talks at that time. Neither the Palestinians nor the Israelis reacted with enthusiasm to Bush's statement. Most Palestinian factions questioned his motives. According to Moussa Abul-Marzouq, a Hamas leader, Bush's statement is just a "manoeuvre aimed at deceiving the Palestinian National Authority and driving it to end the Intifada. It is an American attempt to persuade Arabs and Muslims to join the international alliance against Bin Laden." A statement issued by the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine claimed that Bush's proposal was "a step in the right direction, but it will not be useful unless it is reinforced by effective, practical measures." The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine also described the statement as a "manoeuvre." These are assessments that Arafat cannot disregard, especially since it was Bin Laden, not Arafat, who was hailed in the streets of Gaza when the war broke out. On the Israeli side, an enraged Sharon reacted swiftly. In a violent diatribe accusing the Bush administration of opportunism, he called on Western states, in particular on the US as the leader of the "free world," not to repeat the mistake that triggered World War II, when the European democracies tried to stave off the military confrontation that broke out the following year by sacrificing Czechoslovakia to Hitler's ambitions at the Munich conference in 1938. Sharon pledged that "Israel will never be a second Czechoslovakia," and that, accordingly, it would now have to rely only on itself. He concluded by announcing that Israel would resume its assassination campaign against Palestinian activists who keep the Intifada alive, and abandon the policy of "restraint" to which it had "committed itself" under the terms of the cease-fire agreed upon in the wake of the unprecedented wave of violence that killed dozens of Palestinians and injured more than 200 others. With the attention of the entire world now focused on the military operation aimed at routing Bin Laden, Sharon will be tempted to exploit the situation by stepping up his campaign of assassination against Palestinian activists to target Arafat himself, the man he has recently taken to calling the "Bin Laden of the Middle East." The logic behind Sharon's increasingly belligerent statements is the traditional racist logic that attributes terrorism to specific races, not specific situations, a variation on Huntington's "clash of civilisations" theory. Nor is he the sole proponent of this theory, which assumes the existence of superior civilisations that act in a refined manner in opposition to inferior civilisations that are genetically inclined towards barbaric acts of violence and terrorism. One such inferior civilisation, according to Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, is Islam! Although following the outcry that met his overtly racist statement, Berlusconi offered a weak apology for "offending the sensibility of my Arab and Muslim friends," others have stepped in to fan the flames of racial hatred. Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher accused British Muslims of not reacting with sufficient outrage to the New York and Washington bombings, implying that their religion somehow rendered them lacking in such fundamental human qualities as compassion. Thatcher's statement was condemned as racist not only by Britain's Muslim community but by the entire political establishment in the United Kingdom. Michael Heseltine, the former Tory deputy prime minister who played a major role in dislodging his former mentor from the party leadership and replacing her with John Major, said he could not find words to express the horror he felt when he heard the statement. A savvy politician, Heseltine was no doubt aware how counterproductive Thatcher's incendiary words could be at a time the British government was engaged in difficult negotiations to build an international alliance against terrorism. Bush was no doubt thinking along the same lines when he dismissed Sharon's angry reaction to his statement on Palestinian statehood as "unacceptable."

Beghal was a devout 36-year-old Algerian who dressed in Western clothes and travelled clean-shaven in order to attract as little attention as possible during his travels between the Muslim world and the West. As a member of Takfir-wal-Hijra, an extreme and puritanical Islamist organisation financed by Osama bin Laden, he knew he had to keep a low profile, but Beghal was being cautious for a second reason. Returning to Europe f rom Kabul after a year of training with Abu Zoubeida, named on the FBI's list of most wanted bin Laden lieutenants, he was preparing to participate in a series of pan-European 'spectaculars' on American targets. Beghal - a constant presence at Finsbury Park mosque in London where he recruited for his cause in the late 1990s - was on his way to open the European front of bin Laden's war on the West. It is a disclosure that has sent a shudder of fear and horror through Europe's intelligence and police: the knowledge that the murderous attacks on New York and Washington which took the lives of almost 7,000, were to be repeated throughout Europe as well. French investigators now believe Beghal was returning to France to give the go-ahead for a suicide attack on the US embassy in the Place de la Concorde in central Paris, using a lorry or even a helicopter. By last week Be ghal - who spent two years in London recruiting for his violent and bizarre organisation of fanatics - was emerging as one of the key British links at the centre of a worldwide conspiracy; the point of contact between bin Laden's group and a wider network of allied Islamist terror groups. Last Friday another possibly crucial link, Lotfi Raissi - an Algerian pilot resident in Britain - was standing before a British court, fighting his extradition to the US. He had been named by the FBI as the man who traine d key figures in the suicide attacks in America on 11 September. Britain, along with Germany and France, had emerged as a key jumping off place for the world's biggest terrorist conspiracy. Raissi's home in Colnbrook, Berkshire, sits under the Heathrow flight path. It is an unassuming modern suburban house, divided into flats. His neighbours knew him as a quiet, dumpy, slightly strange character who spoke li ttle and gave nothing away when he did. Many assumed he didn't speak English because he often failed to acknowledge them when they greeted him. 'I would see him and his wife out in the back garden but they just kept thems elves to themselves,' says neighbour Gary Hanley. 'When you looked at them to say hello, they would just look the other way. They made it clear they didn't really want to get involved with anyone socially.' The first neighbours knew of Raissi's background was when armed police raided his house last weekend. He now stands accused by US investigators of training four of the suicide hijackers, giving increasing credibility to c laims that Britain has become a haven for Islamic terrorists. It is a claim borne out by the evidence presented to Bow Street magistrates on Friday, outlining in detail for the first time the allegations against Raissi at a hearing to determine whether he should be extradited to the US. Prosecutor Arvinda Sambir gave a list of devastating charges which put him at the heart of the terror plot. She claimed he was the lead instructor for four of the hijackers, including the man who seized the controls of Am erican Airlines Flight 77 from Washington to Los Angeles and skillfully steered it into the Pentagon. On 23 June Raissi visited Las Vegas with his wife and then flew to Arizona with the Pentagon pilot. The FBI claim he was there to ensure the hijackers were capable of taking control of the aircraft and smashing it into th e Pentagon. 'He attended a number of flying schools attended by four of the hijackers,' said Sambir. Raissi has denied all the accusations, and his family say they are confident he will be found innocent. Among them was an intelligent, disaffected and darkly handsome young man whose name and face have become synonymous with the slaughter in America on 11 September. His name was Mohamed Atta and he would soon be notorious for flying a hijacked jet into one of the twin towers of the World Trade Centre. Three of the dead hijackers, police would quickly establish, had come from Hamburg. A team of agents dispatched by the FBI to Germany has been focusing on the northern city of Hamburg, where three of the men who died in the planes and four others who were on the FBI's initial list of suspects studied at universities. Investigations have spread to other universities throughout the country thought to have links with the terrorist cell. In several German states, investigations were last week under way to uncover hundreds of suspected 'sleepers'. What has emerged in the past week is that - like Beghal and his friends in both Paris and London - Atta was not unknown to the authorities. Indeed he was under surveillance between January and May last year after he was reportedly observed buying large quantities of chemicals in Frankfurt, apparently for the production of explosives and for biological warfare . The US agents reported to have trailed Atta are said to have failed to inform the German authorities about their investigation. The disclosure that Atta was being trailed by police long before 11 September raises the question why the attacks could not have been prevented with the mens' arrest. The German interior ministry has defended the police, saying there was never enough information to lead to arrests, although suspicions were growing about what the men were up to. Indeed, so alarmed were the authorities that last year federal police ordered state prosecutors to investigate the structure of the bin Laden cells in Germany. And like the group around Beghal, Atta's organisation was also using Britain both as a way station on its route to commit terror in the US, and as an alleged home base for some of those suspected of supporting them. The F BI has revealed that 11 of the hijackers who died in the US had been in transit through Britain. More seriously, US officials believe, the group associated with Atta also used Britain. Among this group was the so-called ' twentieth hijacker', 33-year-old Zacarias Moussaoui, a Frenchman whose brother has accused Islamic fundamentalists in Britain of brainwashing him. Moussaoui crossed the Channel in 1992, living in Brixton and hoping to get a job in international commerce and earn a good wage. Nine years later he was cheering in his American prison cell as he watched television pictur es of passenger jets crashing into the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon. In August Moussaoui had been arrested in Minnesota after instructors at the Pan-Am International Flight Academy told police of the peculiar behaviour of the pupil who did not want to learn how to take-off or land - only h ow to maneuver the plane in the air. Moussaoui's time in Britain appears to have been crucial to his transformation from hothead to active terrorist, nurtured in Britain's Islamist fringe. His brother, Abd-Samad Moussaoui, said: 'He began to change when he w ent to Britain. It was there that he got drawn into an extremist group. All alone in London he found friendships within the Islamic fundamentalist groups littered around London's mosques. I noticed a change in his attitud e when he came back to France. He became racist, a black racist,' said his brother. 'I saw how they operate when my brother came back to France with a friend he had met in Britain. He was indoctrinating the friend, just as he had been indoctrinated himself, and his aim was to control all aspects of his l ife. He had become a little guru.' Abd-Samad last saw his brother in the mid-1990s, when he tried one last time to turn him against on fundamentalism. But to no avail. His younger brother walked out and went to train in bin Laden camps in Afghanistan and Chechnya. The next time Abd-Samad saw his brother was on a list of suspected hijackers responsible for the US atrocities. And Moussaoui was not alone. Flirting goes digital at N.Y. bar

NEW YORK--A new bar near the East Village has mixed reality
television, digital media, joysticks, instant messaging and a dose of
voyeurism to create a setting that looks to revolutionize flirting in
New York.
The Remote Lounge boasts more than 100 screens featuring the goings-
on of patrons on about 70 closed-circuit channels.
Several cocktail consoles that double as tables allow party-goers
to control any of the bar's 60 cameras with joysticks to scope out a
potential date or observe the couple in the corner.
The creators of Remote Lounge have turned an electrical supply store
into a digital playhouse for local hipsters.
The bar's entrance is marked with a series of TV screens. Inside,
patrons are bombarded with images from the myriad screens, projecting
a variety of digital media installations and images of bar-goers.
With mini-cameras in every corner, it's a sure thing that someone is
watching your every move--a thought that is disconcerting to some but
exciting and intriguing to others.
It's a legalized version of stalking, said one graduate student at the bar on its
opening night. It is funny that (the camera shots) are in black and white or grainy
color. It makes people look a lot better than they d
o in person.
With a joystick, patrons can control cameras to keep an eye on the door, the dance
floor, or the table behind them. If someone catches their eye, they can send a quick
hello via text messages.
The potential object of their affections can either rebuff the overture or accept it
and, if their curiosity is piqued, find out who sent them the message.
From there it's instant connection, or rejection.
If the message is accepted, a conversation can ensue via a phone on the console or
taking the old-fashioned approach and walking up to the prospective suitor or suitee.
One of the things about the technology is that it's an icebreaker, said Kevin
Centanni, one of the bar's partners.
We see people going up to people who they wouldn't normally go up to in a bar and
talking to them. They can use the consoles for flirting and meeting other people or
play games with people, and they know they are in the
bar and can go find them, Centanni said.
The bar, which the partners had been working on for about a year and half, is a
showcase for technology created by Controlled Entropy Ventures, a developer of
entertainment applications for Web-based, multimedia and video
conferencing technologies.
Those who don't want to leave the comforts of their couches can check
out action via the bar's Web site and decide whether it's hot enough
to get them out to the sleek, futuristic lounge.
Bar patrons may want to keep in mind that their every move may be
documented and could end up as a snapshot on the lounge's Web site
for all to see.
The partners have been talking about opening similar lounges in other
cities--in the United States and abroad--that can possibly even
interact with one another.
Controlled Entropy Partners is self-funded, said partner and Rare
Medium founder Bob Stratton, adding that he was looking for a project
to work on after coming out of the dot-com boom and bust.
The lounge also plans to host digital media exhibitions.

A CIA propaganda apparatus aimed at the American people By Carla Binion October 20, 2001 -- The following events involving CIA propaganda aimed at the American people occurred years ago. However, some of the events' same participants and their ideological heirs are around today wielding their influence on Congress, the president and the public. One participant, Oliver North, now hosts a war stories program on Fox network. This is a little slice of history worth remembering. Journalist Robert Parry shows why remembering the past is important in Lost History, (The Media Consortium, 1999.) Parry is an award-winning investigative reporter who has worked at the Associated Press, Newsweek and for PBS's Frontline. He broke a number of stories on Iran-Contra and exposed Oliver North's covert White House intelligence network. Parry points out that certain unsavory chapters of American history have been lost to the public memory. Some unpleasant historical facts have been glossed over or whitewashed for innocuous reasons. However, the history Parry covers in his above-referenced book has not been lost through benign neglect but, in the author's words, because of a calculated abuse of information in the cause of raw power. Parry says that in the early 1980s, the Reagan administration debated the need for a propaganda apparatus in order to control public opinion. Summarizing this debate, writes Parry, Kate Semerad, an external-relations official at the Agency for International Development, expressed something like envy for the power of totalitarian states to determine what citizens see and hear. In a memo circulated in the early 80s, Semerad wrote, The totalitarian states whose intelligence and propaganda apparatus we face have no internal problem in denying their citizens access to information or even flagrantly lying to them. We have neither the apparatus nor the legal mechanism which would allow the success of an effort to emulate that of Moscow, Habana [sic] and Managua. Parry adds the Semerad memo said a U. S. propaganda apparatus was necessary. We can and must go over the heads of our Marxist opponents directly to the American people, Semerad wrote. She also said, Our targets would be: within the United States, the Congress, specifically the Foreign Affairs Committees and their staffs, the general public [and] the media. According to Parry, the fledgling [propaganda] operation took the initial name of 'Project Truth.' Later Reagan gave the concept the name 'Project Democracy' and its ostensible focus was international. Internal Reagan administration records show that a Project Democracy draft proposal detailed plans to pay for the operation by 'harnessing financial resources from a 'coalition of wealthy individuals'; U. S. defense contractors and private foundations. The Project Truth/Project Democracy group recruited CIA propaganda operations expert Walter Raymond, Jr. President Reagan chose Raymond to manage both the domestic and foreign public diplomacy campaigns aimed at the American public, the media and Congress. Raymond was assigned to the National Security Council staff in 1982. Presidential executive orders prohibited the CIA from influencing U. S. politics and policies, according to Parry, as a safeguard established to prevent the spy agency from corrupting U. S. democratic institutions and creating a secret shadow government. Parry also writes that federal law barred the Executive Branch from spending money to lobby Congress, except for the traditional practices of giving testimony, making speeches and talking one-on-one with members. Walter Raymond later told an Iran-Contra committee he resigned from the CIA in April 1983 so there would be no question of any contamination of this. However, Parry says that Raymond's colleagues remarked that he ran domestic public diplomacy much the same way he would have organized a CIA propaganda operation against a target

Bush By Norman Solomon President Bush's upward spike of popularity owes a lot to his presence on television -- a medium that has not always been so kind. At times, under pressure, he has earned many comparisons to a deer in headlights. But after a wobbly performance on Sept. 11, Bush got into a groove of seizing the TV opportunity and making the most of it. Today's television environment is, more than ever, warmly hospitable to simple -- and simplistic -- declarative statements. That's just as well for Bush, who has shown a distinct tendency to get entangled in a morass of fragmentary linguistic riffs. Last year, on many occasions, he seemed painfully anxious to make his way to the end of sentences without further embarrassment. But now, for the most part, it's a very different story. For insights about recent shifts of George W. Bush's persona on television, I contacted media critic Mark Crispin Miller, whose 1988 book Boxed In: The Culture of TV was a groundbreaking analysis of the tube. In the book, he disputed the customary image of the U.S. president as a mighty individual -- and identified that image as a corporate fiction, the careful work of committees and think tanks, repeatedly reprocessed by the television industry for daily distribution to a mass audience. Boosted by family ties and powerful corporate backers, Bush won the presidency (though not the popular vote) while projecting an affable personality that some have found endearing. But even while carrying out weighty duties of the presidency with all its trappings, he struck many Americans as a lightweight, ill-suited for the job. A turning point came with his dramatic speech to a joint session of Congress in mid-September. The rave media reaction was understandable, Miller told me, because it actually reflected less on Bush's speech per se than on the moment's strange and terrifying context. The speech was deemed 'Churchillian' because the audience (the American people, the Congress, the media) was so desperate for a proper leader at that fearful moment. At that moment of catastrophe, there was so fierce a hunger for a national father-figure that the audience saw one in the president, who therefore came across like Churchill, or like FDR, despite his lack of stature -- which, prior to the shock, had been quite clear to most observers. Miller's book The Bush Dyslexicon: Observations on a National Disorder, published a few months ago, warns against assuming too much about the significance of Bush's habitual tongue-tangles. It's a cautionary note that now rings especially true. The man in the White House is shrewd and capable of high-impact rhetorical feats. Since Sept. 11, Miller says, President Bush has continued, by and large, to speak with more authority than usual. While acknowledging that Bush has at times reverted to his usual gaffery (as in his announcement that ticket counters and airplanes will be flying out of National Airport), Miller observes that on the subject of 'America's new war' -- 'the focus of this administration' -- Bush has managed to ad lib with an overall coherence that is, for him, extraordinary. Miller adds that the president has lately spoken relatively well for the same reason that he's always broken into sudden fits of lucid English -- because, in speaking of our national mission of revenge, he's speaking from the heart. In fact, George W. Bush has always spoken clearly on those subjects that genuinely matter to him. Thus it is that, when he talks about baseball, say, or about his property in Crawford, he has no problems with his syntax, grammar or vocabulary. Professor Miller, who specializes in media studies at New York University, contends that Bush also is most articulate when speaking cruelly -- on the value of the death penalty, or when cracking jokes, or when saying no. It's when he tries to sound a higher note -- idealistically, or out of magnanimity, or on his trademark theme of 'compassion' -- that Bush starts speaking broken English, because, like most of us, his tongue will not cooperate when he is being insincere. These days, President Bush is evidently sincere about wanting the missiles to keep flying and the bombs to keep falling on Afghanistan - - circumstances that notably enhance his verbal skills. The fact that large numbers of Afghan people are now facing imminent starvation due to the ongoing attacks does not seem to bother our nation's leading compassionate conservative. The president, says Miller, has lately spoken with unusual coherence in his off-the-cuff remarks -- because his subject nowadays is war. This means that law enforcement agencies can enter a person's home or office, search through the person's possessions, in some cases seize physical objects or electronic information, without the person knowing that law enforcement agents were there. This is a significant change from the way searches have been conducted historically and will diminish privacy protections guaranteed by the Fourth Amendment. We believe this to be an unwise change. We are especially concerned that this very significant change in the conduct of searches governed by the Fourth Amendment is being considered in the context of emergency legislation to respond to the terrorist attack, without either the House or Senate holding hearings to thoroughly consider the ramifications of this change. Furthermore, this provision is not limited to crimes of terrorism, but would apply in all federal criminal cases. Lastly, unlike other provisions of H.R. 2975 that expand the government's power to search, this provision does not sunset in a few years. As a general rule, covert searches for physical evidence are illegal. Rule 41(d) of the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure specifically requires that the officer conducting the search shall leave a copy and receipt at the place from which the property was taken. Title 18 of the United States Code only authorizes delayed notice for searches of oral and wire communications (see 18 U.S.C. 2510 et seq.). Nothing in the criminal code permits secret searches for physical evidence. Furthermore, the Supreme Court has traditionally held that an officer must knock and announce his presence before serving a search warrant, absent exigent circumstances. See Richardson v. Wisconsin, 520 U.S. 385 (1997). The Department of Justice claims that the provision in the anti-terrorism legislation will codify the already existing practice of conducting covert searches. It is true that the FBI sometimes conducts covert searches, but that fact is disturbing given its lack of legal authority to do so. The Department of Justice seeks this provision precisely because FBI agents do not have the authority to do what they are doing. The Department of Justice is correct in stating that the Second Circuit has upheld the constitutionality of this practice, provided that agents did not seize any items. See U.S. v. Villegas, 899 F2d 1324 (2nd Cir. 1990). The Ninth Circuit has also permitted the use of evidence obtained through covert searches; however, the case law is much more convoluted. The first case it considered was United States v. Freitas, 800 F.2d 1451 (9th Cir. 1986). In that case, the district court found that covert search warrants were invalid under Rule 41 and unconstitutional. However, on appeal, the Ninth Circuit held that evidence seized pursuant to the warrant could be used under the good faith exception in United States v. Leon, 468 U.S. 897 (1984). Subsequent cases seem to have upheld the concept of covert searches, but have usually found that the criteria necessary to support the search were not met. See United States v. Johns, 851 F.2d 1131 (9th Cir. 1988). Other circuits have not ruled on the constitutionality of covert searches, nor has the Supreme Court. Links to these stories are contained herein. Those backing President Bushís request for a coalition had better make certain they are getting their fair share of the spoils of war, a war arranged months before the suicide air attacks against the US. A pact for war against the Taliban was made between the United States, CIS (Russia), Pakistan, and India to facilitate a Middle-East to S.E. Asia Oil Pipeline, which cannot take place with growing political and religious upheaval in the region at the hands of the Taliban. Iran is thought to be a covert member to the pact. The combat was initially slated for mid October, which would seem to account for warnings that preparing for war will take time. The problem is that the ONLY logical pipeline route runs for nearly a thousand miles along the Afghanistan border with Iran and Pakistan, (largely so close as to be visible from the border. This route would seem to provide the US with the best incentive to date to cooperate with Iran by, in essence, competing with a proposed Chinese backed oil pipeline project serving the same oil fields in northern Iran and points south, preventing China from obtaining a defacto monopoly holder on oil supplies for SE Asia. The Chinese began negotiating that project in 1997, causing a great deal of consternation for the Clinton administration and major US oil companies who stood to gain little in the project. However, the Taliban are fomenting both religious and political instability in the region between Iranian and Pakistani Shiites and Taliban Sunni Islamic sects, with notable success. This unrest makes impractical the financial investment and international cooperation required to construct the pipeline. The solution was apparantly to be death warrants for both the Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar, and capitalistic terrorist Osama bin Laden, who had apparantly grown too profitable and too strong for his former CIA masters and American business partners to control. Destruction of the Taliban was imperative, but political needs would not permit a simple solution. For Pakistan and India, long bitter rivals, to partner would require only sufficient profits to make peace between them more palatable. However, Pakistan required a significant motive beyond profits to risk internal conflict due to its nationís divided religious and political landscape, all intertwined with allegiances to the Taliban. There needed to be an extremely irresistible reason for the nationís leadership to back/support military action against what their own citizens considered a virtual spiritual ally. In like manner, Iran required an irresistible reason to publicly support with vocal blessings American interests in any such action, and at the same time, needed a way to salve bitter wounds between the two countries which would allow future joint financial ventures. In similar manner, the United States needed a very powerful and irresistible reason to mobilize America into supporting such a war, a war which would be extremely difficult to prosecute, as the Soviet Union could testify of first hand, having found the Soviet-Afghanistan war to be their ëVietnam.í The logical solution which would indeed provide irresistible reasons for all concerned, would now seem to

Though known in Cuba as the Spanish-Cuban-American War, most people know what came after by the name of the Spanish-American War (that name is used in this site to insure everyone understands). Great sympathy in the US for Cuba had been building up, but the US Government refused to even recognize the Cuban rebels. The destruction of the Maine furthered war fever. Many people in other countries saw the war as an unprovoked action of American aggression, but in the US the results were seen as positive. The Cubans, who knew their independence was coming soon, didn't want the US joining in the war. The Spanish knew from the beginning they had no chance. Their navy was no match for the modern American navy, and the war in Cuba had greatly weakened their army. Nevertheless, the Spanish decided to put up a fight. The war began as a battle of the navies. In the Manila Bay and Havana Bay, the American fleets destroyed the old Spanish ships, killing hundreds. Then came a small problem for the United States. Without any recent need for an army, they had few soldiers and those they did have were unprepared. The US army of 28,000 compared with a Spanish one four times that size in Cuba. Quickly the American army began to train and many volunteered. Soon, infantry and cavalry were in Cuba. The American troops planned to capture San Juan Hill to take Santiago. General Shafter worried about sickness and Spanish reinforcements, and wanted to take it quickly. After taking El Caney, General Lawton was to meet with the cavalry and together they would capture the hill. The greatly outnumbered Spanish troops put up a strong fight at El Caney, killing far more than they lost and delaying Lawton's troops. Though ordered to retreat, Lawton continued fighting, and with the help of the Cuban army, finally won. At San Juan Hill, 3,000 Americans were ordered to move forward. The cavalry advanced as well, including Roosevelt's famous Rough Riders. Meanwhile, the Cuban troops prevented reinforcements to Santiago by thousands of Spanish soldiers. After some fighting, the Spanish left the hill. They had lost 102 dead to the 223 on the US side. Including wounded, the American force had lost 10% of its soldiers. Large numbers of American troops prepared to attack Santiago, but the Spanish surrendered the city first. In other Spanish colonies, the Americans had little trouble. They took Puerto Rico without resistance, Guam, and the Philippines as well. This war was a disaster for Spain, and marked the emergence of America as a great imperial power. Tomb of Their Own By FRANKLIN FOER Issue date: 04.17.00 Post date: 04.06.00 A secret society so powerful it can give you anything you desire ... at a price. --trailer for The Skulls The skulls is a movie about George W. Bush's wild youth. Of course, it's not billed that way. No Hollywood studio would explicitly make a picture about a current presidential contender. But the subject of The Skulls is clear enough: the corrupting influence of a secret society, blatantly modeled after Yale's notorious Skull and Bones, of which Bush was once a devoted member. The depiction of Skull and Bones in the film--just the latest addition to a minor industry of Bonesiana--pretty much captures the prevailing media view of the institution: an aristocratic, all-powerful cabal. Membership, at least according to the movie, entitles the Bonesman to $20,000, a sports car, and a harem of gorgeous women. The Skulls control the university and the local cops. The society's alumni--senators and judges--sit around sipping champagne, chitchatting about hunting, and conspiring to suppress their enemies. Throughout the film, the Skulls' critics fall back on the same mantra: If it's secret and it's elite, it can't be good. That's half right. Actually, the problem with the Skull and Bones of today may be that it's not forthrightly elitist enough. Skull and Bones, along with Yale's other secret societies, isn't the fusty, preppy, creepy conspiracy it once was. These societies ditched most of the nude wrestling, weird rituals, and boarding-school elitism long ago. In fact, they've spent the past decade running hard in the other direction. To put it crudely, Yale's secret societies--once ground zero of the Eastern establishment--are now high temples of political correctness, the ultimate in Ivy League identity politics. This year's class of Bonespeople has more women than men and as many African Americans as WASPS. Conservatives are scarce. Skull and Bones has democratized--but not in a very productive way. Back when the societies were proudly, offensively elitist, they had a purpose and a paternalistic sense of duty. Bones bragged that it would shape the characters of those who would shape the world. Today, the students in Skull and Bones find that kind of noblesse oblige deeply embarrassing. And, in their efforts to inoculate themselves against charges of elitism, the new elites have directed their energy to less grandiose concerns: namely, themselves. Skull and Bones, once a group for public-minded elites, has become the exact opposite--group therapy. Skull and Bones' roots can be traced to 1826, when a New York bricklayer named William Morgan disappeared just as he was preparing to publish a book that would unveil the secrets of his Masonic lodge. The Morgan case grabbed headlines and sparked a national backlash against all secret societies. In a populist whirl, Harvard and Yale Universities forced their most prominent secret society, Phi Beta Kappa, to ditch its secrecy. The Yale men, angry at having their mystery stripped away, rebelled and created Skull and Bones in 1832. Again, the faculty campaigned to stamp out the clandestine club, but this merely increased its cachet. By the 1850s, when it built its spooky, windowless sepulchre on High Street, Bones had become an exclusive hangout for Yale's top students. They'd get together to perform goofy gothic rituals with coffins, robes, and mud, but mainly they would talk about trendy literature that wasn't covered in Yale's classrooms. Eventually, the guys who couldn't win spots in Bones went off and started their own secret societies. Harvard students also responded to the demise of Phi Beta Kappa by establishing their own exclusive havens: the finals clubs. But these were never more than a Gold Coast, a place for the richest students to socialize with one another and turn up their noses at the rest of the student body. Skull and Bones, on the other hand, steered a more high-minded course. Even when it admitted only men from Groton and Hotchkiss and some of its members touted eugenics, Bones bragged of being a meritocracy. If you excelled in extracurricular activities--as editor of the Yale Daily News or captain of the football team, for example--Skull and Bones tapped you. It's an ethos celebrated in the 1911 novel Stover at Yale, which explains that election to Bones stands as a reward for merit here. Men spent their college careers positioning themselves for a tap. Rejection was crushing. Or, as Sinclair Lewis melodramatically put it, Some good men always carried away scars. And the finality and exclusiveness of the choosing created and would continue to create a faint and enduring fault line in the Yale brotherhood. And, while Bones was hardly immune to cronyism and nepotism, high-achieving outsiders did occasionally win admission to the episcopacy's den.

His was Skull and Bones; others were Book and Snake. and Wolf's Head. It meant that you were set for life as a member of the commercial aristocracy. Like many other members of Skull and Bones, Bush went into the CIA. Rather like the wearing of silly clothes at Christ's Hospital or Eton, members of those secret societies spent every Sunday evening doing secret things in large buildings, with no windows, which looked like tombs. Young In 1950 I entered high school, having left Texas only once before for a week in my life. In 1960 I arrived by boat at Southampton and have lived in England since then, in Cambridge and London. During that decade I went to Yale, always held onto my wallet when in Manhattan and ended up studying medicine in upstate New York. Up until 1954 there was a quality about living in America that's hard to convey, but come to think of it, was rather like now: consensual and ostensibly apolitical. I say ostensibly, because, of course, everything is political, in the sense that we live out values, willy-nilly and these occur in the framework of institutions and power. But in the 1960s we knew that it was a time when 'the politics of experience' experience itself was crucial, vivid, earnest. Everything was at stake. The 1950s was the time of the Cold War. A machine politician had inherited the presidency when Roosevelt died, had dropped the atom bomb and had astonished everyone by winning the 1948 election. For all but the first two years of the decade the President was an avuncular war hero, Eisenhower, born in Texas but raised in Kansas. Even he got round to stirring the tranquillity of the times when he left office, warning the people against the military-industrial complex: In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, of the military industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist. We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machine of defence with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together The prospect of domination of the nation's scholars by federal employment, project allocations, and the power of money is ever presentand is gravely to be regarded. Yet, in holding scientific research and discovery in respect, as we should, we must also be alert to the equal and opposite danger that public policy could itself become the captive of a scientific-technological elite. He may as well have been Cassandra: he went unheeded. What he warned against has occurred and is now taken for granted in the customer-contract basis of our industry, research and development, with its priorities, funding and curricula largely determined the high-tech goods and services of both civil and military. The quality of experience in the fifties was utterly different. Wartime manufacturing had got us out of the depression. The firm my father worked for had gone from the doldrums to manufacturing artillery shells, and the government-supported resources were then converted to a booming trade in cotton gins and heating and ventilating equipment. The company was bought out by Rockwell, a leading high-tech military and aerospace company, and there is now a green field where the plant was. Rockwell had wanted another subsidiary of the company and had simply asset-stripped the remainder, sacking everyone, without compensation. In the fifties the quality of experience had a mixture of post-war optimism and utter paranoia about communism. I had no idea what it was beyond Godless and wrong. I never heard of Freud, Marx or Darwin before entering university. I never a met a communist until I arrived in Cambridge in 1960, expecting him to be a hard man. In fact, he turned up late for Christmas lunch, because he got lost. 'Politics' was not part of our values. The word conjured up not a set of issues but a career for opportunists, for gregarious and corrupt people. Lyndon Johnson had become a Senator from Texas in 1948; many votes had been bought; many names came from gravestones; others voted many times, since the electoral rolls were out of date. The Cemetery counts among its inhabitants several former Yale presidents, along with Eli Whitney, Noah Webster and Walter Camp, New Haven industrialist and the father of American football. As old as it looks, though, the Cemetery hasn't been around forever. In New Haven's earliest years, graves were dug in the Old Burial Ground, located on the New Haven Green behind Center Church. When the Grove Street site was opened in 1796 to alleviate the increasingly crowded Green, citizens removed the headstones from the former site. Secret Societies After a few weeks of class, students begin to realize that certain ominous and foreboding buildings around campus don't really seem to be a part of everyday Yale life. They aren't classrooms; they aren't office buildings, and they're not libraries or houses. They're the tombs of the senior secret societies, selective organizations which tap second-semester juniors to become members. If you see groups of hooded and cloaked figures walking around campus, it is a pretty good bet they belong to a secret society (although the athletic team initiations get weirder every year). The contents of the tombs are shrouded in a certain amount of mystery and membership is supposed to be secret, but nobody's going to keep you from looking at them. Berzelius is on Whitney Avenue, Snake and Book is on Grove Street, and Wolf's Head is on York Street, just for starters. Sterling Memorial Library When you think of Cross Campus Library, you think: modern, white paint, underground, weenie bins. CCL, while a beloved study spot of many, can never be said to be an interesting or architecturally powerful building. Sterling Memorial Library, on the other hand, seems to have been built with the phrase nooks and crannies in mind. The stacks, themselves a formidable assemblage of intricate passageways and musty tomes, contain a multitude of reading rooms, topical collections, and even a small cafeteria. Your guide to the labyrinth is posted at the entrance to the elevators on the ground floor; it lists such enticing niches as the Map Collection and the Slavic Reading Room. Also, don't miss the small courtyard, located to your right as you face the front desk. Science Hill It certainly isn't the most out-of-the-way place on campus, especially for those who load their schedules with Group IV classes. The Hill represents the sacrifice that science majors make to their chosen field, but the more advanced uses of that sloping green lawn are not immediately apparent. From kicking back while the weather's nice, to sledding when it's not, Science Hill has benign as well as malevolent aspects. One of the most attractive is Farnam Gardens: walk up Science Hill, just past Sterling Chemical Laboratory, and you'll stumble upon this tiny slice of paradise. Lush greenery provides a refuge from the hustle and bustle of Yale life, and the shaded benches offer a view of Whitney Avenue. Old Campus Fire Escape: Welch A You haven't really seen Old Campus until you've had a bird's eye view, and the best way to do that is from the fire escape outside the windows of the lucky sops in Welch A. You can either try to hop the fence at the bottom (not recommended) or convince one of the denizens to let you climb onto it from the window. It makes a great study break. Steam Tunnels The true underground at Yale. These somewhat diminutive passageways crisscross the entire campus, carrying untold lengths of pipe all over the University. Exploring the steam tunnels used to be a much more common rite of passage, but security has been markedly tighter in recent years. Any forbidden area with entrances all over Cross Campus, though, can't be impossible to penetrate. Besides, those who aren't caught can't be punished The Joseph Slifka Center for Jewish Life Most students know this year-old building as the home of the Kosher Kitchen, to which a limited number of meal-plan credits can be transferred for a welcome change of culinary pace. While its importance as an alternative to the monotonous dining hall fare should not be underestimated, Slifka's contribution to Yale student life does not end there. The classic barbarous relic is gold, perhaps the original store of wealth. While it returned an annual average of almost 20 percent from 1968 to 1979 -- ahead of virtually every other form of real or paper asset -- it has savagely underperformed shares and property since then. But every dog has its day Gold has always been seen as a safe haven in dangerous circumstances. Many Americans believe the Four Horsemen of The Apocalypse are about to ride into Manhattan, and are feeling scared and financially battered. They are retreating to hard commodities such as gold that they see as offering security. They have suffered a $4,000bn reduction in the value of their portfolios; many are experiencing a bear market for the first time. They are frightened that there will be a full depression. The present psychology of buying gold is about preservation of capital, hedging and playing the contrary game. One of its great disadvantages is that it generates no income. But in the current low interest rate climate, the yield on cash, bonds and the like is almost negative once inflation is taken into account. So by buying gold now you are missing very little on the dividend front. It is all about the capital gain -- or loss. At least gold is highly liquid, with minimal commission charges, unlike most other alternative asset classes like property and venture capital. Moreover, experts purport that gold is negatively correlated with other assets -- it rises when they fall, and visa versa. If you buy this argument, then the current decline in stock prices is a major gold-buying signal. There are various ways to play the gold market. One can simply buy hallmarked gold bars at about $280 an ounce, or bullion coins such as Krugerrands at a small premium, or gold futures or options. It is important to check the custodial arrangements for the physical metal and the credibility of the financial institution that helps you; instead of them storing it you can always take delivery -- but you had better get insurance! You can even invest in numismatic coins, but these sell for a substantial premium to the value of their gold content. Alternatively you can invest in gold mining shares. Gold mining equities offer greater leverage than holding the metal directly, but also added forms of risk. These types of shares can be highly volatile and difficult to value on fundamentals. They are mostly quoted on the Australian, South African, Canadian and American stock exchanges. Do take care and remember that dubious promoters, speculators and charlatans often manipulate small mining stocks. The world's quoted gold mining shares have a total market capitalisation of $30bn-plus, so there is plenty to choose from. If you want a conservative investment, pick a solid multinational like Anglo American, Barrick Gold or Newmont Mining. The price of gold is determined by a host of factors -- mostly macroeconomic. Central banks hold about a quarter of the world's gold and carry out selling and lending activities -- often fairly secretly. Annual world production is about 2,350 tonnes, while consumption varies, but is about 75 per cent for jewelry, and the rest for the electronics industry and dentistry. Consumption easily outstrips supply. Yet simple supply and demand from users and producers is only one element of the metal's overall price dynamics. In the early 1980s, the era of high inflation, gold peaked at $850 an ounce -- in the past 20 years it has fallen to a third of that level, partly thanks to improvements in technology cutting the cost of new production. This woeful investment performance encourages the diehard gold bugs to believe that gold is incredibly cheap and due for revaluation. They feel the panic over war and recession will increase investment demand. The gold bulls say gold rises when the dollar falls -- and many commentators believe the dollar to be overvalued. They like the shelter and stability gold offers, and its retained purchasing value. They cite the example of how an ounce of gold would buy a suit today -- just as it did in Henry VII's day. The primary target of this drastic assault was German Chancellor and Führer Adolf Hitler. Although injured in the attack Hitler would survive this harsh assassination attempt. As the heat from the blast emanated from the structure it caressed the face of a young German colonel who stood about 50 yards from the flame engulfed building. Although this officer bore the marks of war wounds that included an eye patch and missing hand he still possessed an aristocratic and noble bearing in his tailored officer's tunic. Believing that no one could have survived such a powerful explosion the colonel muttered to himself that 'the beast is dead'. This regal looking colonel was Count Claus von Stauffenburg and as the small building he had just bombed with a timed explosive hidden in a brief case began to smolder in flames, he hurried to a waiting staff car. His driver and co conspirator sped to a nearby airfield where a plane waited to fly von Stauffenburg to Berlin where his destiny beckoned. [1] Thus began the famous July Plot to kill Adolf Hitler and overthrow the Third Reich. History was been very kind to the conspirators who attempted this daring coup d'état. They are heralded as heroes and as allies in the war against Hitler. The primary architect of this conspiracy was Claus von Stauffenburg and he especially is honored as a valiant soldier who sought to destroy the despotic figure of Adolf Hitler. In major cities throughout Europe, the United States and even Israel streets and parks have been named after Stauffenburg in honor of his bold effort to annihilate the Nazi Hierarchy. Now that over fifty years has passed since the July Plot was hatched a fresh examination of the motivations and ultimate aspirations of the primary conspirator is necessary to understand the true reasons for this audacious attempt to seize power. Some of the conclusions drawn from this reevaluation may not fit the 'official' historical interpretation of the events surrounding the July Plot. Some may even be offended by the conclusions proffered. The primary thesis of this examination contends that the July Plot was not in any way, shape or form an attempt to restore democracy to the German people as it is often portrayed. Neither was it a concerted effort to stop the horrors of the Holocaust and to save the various Jews, Gypsies, Gays and political dissidents who so greatly suffered in the concentration camps. Nor was it an attempt to bring freedom to the many occupied countries that endured German control on a daily basis. The July Plot was an attempt to restore monarchy to Germany and to continue the domination of Europe by the German people. In order to explain this hypothesis it will be necessary to examine the background of the principal conspirator Count Claus von Stauffenburg. What motivated von Stauffenburg to plant a bomb as a means to kill Hitler on that hot July day is far more complex than historians have acknowledged. It involves his own family history, the mentors of his youth and his opinions concerning the social class and standing of the leaders of the Third Reich. It is a lot to unravel and it would be best to begin with Stauffenburg's family history. Claus Philipp von Stauffenburg was born on November 15, 1907 to Alfred and Koraline Schenk Graf von Stauffenburg in Swabia Germany. His father could trace his ancestry back to medieval times. It is believed that the Stauffenburgs emerged from the House of Staufen who ruled Germany as Holy Roman Emperors form the early 800 rds until 1273 AD when the Habsburg Dynasty took the imperial crown. The Stauffenburgs were most likely Staufen princes who became warriors as a means to defend the German Empire. The first traceable ancestor of the von Stauffenburgs is one Werner Schenk von Zollern who is mentioned in a legal document written in 1257. Schenk means 'cup bearer' or steward in Old German and this title suggests that the Werner in question was a courtier. A script dated in 1317 mentions the name Stauffenburg for the first time. The signature of Hannes Schenk von Stauffenburg appears on this document and it is from this figure that Claus von Stauffenburg could trace his direct lineage. [2] The von Stauffenburgs held the title 'Free Knights of the Empire' meaning that they answered only to the Emperor in matters of law and personal honor. This imperial designation was of equal status to that of a baron. The difference being that a baron was bound to a particular region while a Free Knight was allowed to roam unreservedly throughout the Empire. This family produced a number of notable military

Sharon was apparently informed of these conversations and telephoned the ambassador and told him that he felt he had become too involved in Israeli affairs. An Israeli source said that Kurtzer apologized." It is one thing for the Israeli lobby and its many operatives in the American mass media machine to attack George Bush for not bowing to Sharon's every desire. But, the American ambassador to Israel, at least in theory, is working for the government of the United States. If he can't stand up as an American when addressing a terrorist war criminal like Ariel Sharon, he should resign. Kurzer, who is an orthodox Jew, needs to realign himself with his own country. He should disassociate himself from the Israeli lobby or give up his post in Jerusalem. Ariel Sharon and the Israel Firsters have spared no effort to destroy the emerging international coalition against terrorism. They have gone so far as to accuse Bush of appeasement. Kurzer should apologize for being careless with his apologies. If Bush is serious about an Israeli/Palestinian peace, he should withdraw Kurzer immediately and send a real American envoy to handle Sharon. The United States should also instruct our ambassador in Belgium to take a greater interest in indicting Sharon for the slaughter at Qibya and Sabra and Shatila. To send an even stronger message, simultaneously indict Sadam for his use of chemical weapons against the Kurds in Halbja. And watch how quickly the attitudes in the Middle East will change. Once and for all, let us hunt down terrorists and war criminals and bring them to justice. In the coming years, nothing will provide more security than the universal application of International law. America will have to abandon its selective enforcement of Security Council resolutions. We need to prove that any war criminal, whether serving in the uniform of a regular army, a militia or a guerilla force must abide by the Geneva convention. The slaughter of innocents needs to be considered beyond the pale, no matter the political grievance of the assailant. So far, Bush has indeed been guilty of appeasement. The president has consistently rolled over for that thug Sharon, with disastrous results. This administration is largely responsible for sanitizing a notorious war criminal, whose hands are every bit as bloody as Osama Bin Laden. If the American government continues subsidizing Israeli repression, they will be reinforcing the appeal of extremist elements on the Arab Street. Until September 11th, no one predicted how lethal such resentments could get. But the wizards at the State Department, an Israeli occupied branch of our government, determined that the risk of a carte blanche to Sharon was a 'no cost option.' Just now, the United States is realizing that the appeasement of Israel carries a much larger price tag than anyone ever imagined. The Likudnik Jewish Supremacists are every bit as demented in their visions as the extremist Islamic supremacists who labor for Bin Laden. They are just more clever in marketing their point of view with the able assistance of ethnic media marvels like the New York Times and FOX news. Our political class, Bush and Powell included, continued to coddle the fascist Likudnik lobbyists because they are 'our kind of supremacists' and it was good for the polls. The incredibly stupid policies of the last few decades have created us many enemies out of thin air. When more Americans finally get around to how a phenomenon like "Bin Laden" and his "suicide cult" came knocking on our doors, they will arrive at the horrific conclusion that it has everything to do with a dangerous combination of campaign financing and foreign lobbyists. Because of the pro-Israeli ethnics who dominate any discussion of the Middle East, Americans seem to have no idea of how the 'Gulf War' played in Arab homes. Even for those who championed the forcible expulsion of Iraq from Kuwait, the continued presence of American troops in the region, long after the battle was won, was seen as a cynical attempt to reinforce American domination of Arab lands. And these were no ordinary Arab lands. They held vast amounts of Oil, the one promise of providence for millions of impoverished Arabs and Muslims around the globe. They were also the home of Mecca and Medina and the strictly puritanical Wahabbis. And not a single Arab or Muslim failed to notice that while the occupation of Kuwait lasted seven months, the brutal military Israeli occupation of the West Bank, Gaza, East Jerusalem, South Lebanon and the Golan was

Mullah Mohammed Hasan Akhund, the deputy Taliban leader, and George W. Bush agree to meet in Kabul for the first round of talks in a new anti-terrorism process. When George sits down, he notices three buttons on the arm of Akhund's chair. They begin talking. After about five minutes Akhund presses the first button. A boxing glove springs out of a box on the desk and punches Bush in the face. Annoyed, Bush carries on talking as Akhund laughs. A few minutes later the second button is pressed. This time a big boot comes out and kicks Bush in the shin. Again Akhund laughs, and again George carries on talking, not wanting to put off the bigger issue of peace between the two countries. But when the third button is pressed and another boot comes out and kicks Bush square in the privates, he's finally had enough. "I'm headin' back home!" he calmly tells the Afghan. "We'll finish these talks in Washington in two weeks!" A fortnight passes and Akhund flies to the United States for talks. As the two men sit down, Akhund notices three buttons on Bush's chair arm and prepares himself for the Texan's retaliation. They begin talking and George presses the first button. Akhund ducks, but nothing happens. George snickers but they continue talking. A few minutes later he presses the second button. Akhund jumps up, but again nothing happens. Bush roars with laughter. They continue the talks but when the third button is pressed, Akhund jumps up again, but again nothing happens. Bush falls on the floor in a fit of hysterics. "Forget this," says Akhund. "I'm going back to Afghanistan!" George W. says, through tears of laughter, "What Afghanistan??"

A confidential document leaked to The Independent on Sunday reveals that thousands of people could be contaminated and emergency services and mortuaries overwhelmed if an attack were launched without warning. The 16-page document, Response to the Deliberate Release of Chemicals and Biological Agents, was issued to local councils and fire brigades on Thursday by the civil contingencies secretariat of the Cabinet Office. The Government did not announce that it had been sent out and an earlier draft, also seen by this newspaper, stated that its contents "should not be disclosed to members of the public". Ian Hoult, the general secretary of the Emergency Planning Society, said yesterday that publication of the document should reassure the public. The World Health Organisation has told governments that "clear and accurate communication of the risks to the public is paramount". Despite the spate of anthrax incidents in the US – which have so far infected eight people, killing one – the Cabinet Office document suggests that the risk of "a large-scale deliberate release" is low. Investigators now suspect the US attacks may be the work of a home-grown right-wing group rather than Osama bin Laden's al-Qa'ida. Further traces of anthrax were found in a mailroom of a US House of Representatives office building, officials said. The Government has consistently stressed that there is no expectation of chemical or biological attack in the UK, but the report admits it is "possible". The Public Health Laboratory Service has issued detailed instructions to Britain's doctors and hospitals on how to combat "deliberate releases" of anthrax, smallpox, botulism and plague. They are likely to cause controversy because they indicate that doctors and emergency workers – but not the general public – should be vaccinated before exposure to anthrax and smallpox. The report says: "The number of casualties could far exceed that resulting from any previous major incident in this country." Attacks "would be particularly dangerous where a large number of people were assembled in an enclosed area". Chemical attacks, perhaps using sarin, a nerve gas, would probably affect victims within 60 seconds, but biological attacks, such as anthrax, could take days to emerge. Local hospitals, GP surgeries, and mortuaries could be unable to cope. Temporary shelters, mortuaries and decontamination and treatment centres would be needed. The public would be asked to say indoors, and would only be evacuated if this posed a major threat to their health. "Large-scale evacuation could be extremely difficult and time-consuming." The guidance also reveals that ministers would take overall command in a chemical or biological attack by invoking secret national emergency plans. Home Office ministers in the Cobra civil emergency committee would oversee the emergency response. The army would have an unusually large role in tackling the crisis, with biological and chemical warfare experts from Porton Down drafted in to help the police. So would MI5, though references to it have been excised from the final version of the document. Senior emergency planning officers, who complained last month about being kept in the dark by the Government, said the report "gave a very good over-all, joined-up framework".
