QUESTIONABLE TIES
Tracking bin Laden's money flow leads back to Midland, Texas

On September 24, President George W. Bush appeared at a press conference in
the White House Rose Garden to announce a crackdown on the financial
networks of terrorists and those who support them. ³U.S. banks that have
assets of these groups or individuals must freeze their accounts,² Bush
declared. ³And U.S. citizens or businesses are prohibited from doing
business with them.²

But the president, who is now enjoying an astounding 92 percent approval
rating, hasn¹t always practiced what he is now preaching: Bush¹s own
businesses were once tied to financial figures in Saudi Arabia who currently
support bin Laden.

In 1979, Bush¹s first business, Arbusto Energy, obtained financing from
James Bath, a Houstonian and close family friend. One of many investors,
Bath gave Bush $50,000 for a 5 percent stake in Arbusto. At the time, Bath
was the sole U.S. business representative for Salem bin Laden, head of the
wealthy Saudi Arabian family and a brother (one of 17) to Osama bin Laden.
It has long been suspected, but never proven, that the Arbusto money came
directly from Salem bin Laden. In a statement issued shortly after the
September 11 attacks, the White House vehemently denied the connection,
insisting that Bath invested his own money, not Salem bin Laden¹s, in
Arbusto.

In conflicting statements, Bush at first denied ever knowing Bath, then
acknowledged his stake in Arbusto and that he was aware Bath represented
Saudi interests. In fact, Bath has extensive ties, both to the bin Laden
family and major players in the scandal-ridden Bank of Commerce and Credit
International (BCCI) who have gone on to fund Osama bin Laden. BCCI
defrauded depositors of $10 billion in the ¹80s in what has been called the
³largest bank fraud in world financial history² by former Manhattan District
Attorney Robert Morgenthau. During the ¹80s, BCCI also acted as a main
conduit for laundering money intended for clandestine CIA activities,
ranging from financial support to the Afghan mujahedin to paying
intermediaries in the Iran-Contra affair.

When Salem bin Laden died in 1988, powerful Saudi Arabian banker and BCCI
principal Khalid bin Mahfouz inherited his interests in Houston. Bath ran a
business for bin Mahfouz in Houston and joined a partnership with bin
Mahfouz and Gaith Pharaon, BCCI¹s frontman in Houston¹s Main Bank.

The Arbusto deal wasn¹t the last time Bush looked to highly questionable
sources to invest in his oil dealings. After several incarnations, Arbusto
emerged in 1986 as Harken Energy Corporation. When Harken ran into trouble a
year later, Saudi Sheik Abdullah Taha Bakhsh purchased a 17.6 percent stake
in the company. Bakhsh was a business partner with Pharaon in Saudi Arabia;
his banker there just happened to be bin Mahfouz.

Though Bush told the Wall Street Journal he had ³no idea² BCCI was involved
in Harken¹s financial dealings, the network of connections between Bush and
BCCI is so extensive that the Journal concluded their investigation of the
matter in 1991 by stating: ³The number of BCCI-connected people who had
dealings with Harkenall since George W. Bush came on boardraises the
question of whether they mask an effort to cozy up to a presidential son.²
Or even the president: Bath finally came under investigation by the FBI in
1992 for his Saudi business relationships, accused of funneling Saudi money
through Houston in order to influence the foreign policies of the Reagan and
first Bush administrations.

Worst of all, bin Mahfouz allegedly has been financing the bin Laden
terrorist networkmaking Bush a U.S. citizen who has done business with
those who finance and support terrorists. According to USA Today, bin
Mahfouz and other Saudis attempted to transfer $3 million to various bin
Laden front operations in Saudi Arabia in 1999. ABC News reported the same
year that Saudi officials stopped bin Mahfouz from contributing money
directly to bin Laden. (Bin Mahfouz¹s sister is also a wife of Osama bin
Laden, a fact that former CIA Director James Woolsey revealed in 1998 Senate
testimony.)

When President Bush announced he is hot on the trail of the money used over
the years to finance terrorism, he must realize that trail ultimately leads
not only to Saudi Arabia, but to some of the same financiers who originally
helped propel him into the oil business and later the White House. The ties
between bin Laden and the White House may be much closer than he is willing
to acknowledge.

U.S. connections of the Bin Laden family until
it was ordered to halt the investigation by the
present Bush administration.

Reflections on the past...
Over the past week, I've been re-reading this journal, and I've gained
some fascinating insights.  It's coming up to the 3-year anniversary
for this journal, and its seen some significant changes over those
years.  Changes in the formatting of the website and the layout, and
changes in my life and what's important to me.  Here's a rundown of
those changes, as the years and months have gone by.
November 1998.  The journal begins.  I was lonely and needy for the
company of women.  I went out on a lot of dates, and got excited about
every woman who gave me some attention.  I also got crushed after
being dumped after only one date - sometimes without even going on any
date at all!
June  1999.  After 5 years without a girlfriend, I found myself in a
relationship with Darlene.  The drought had broken!  This was a very
happy and creative time for me, being in an exciting and magical 'love
story'.
January 2000.  The magic had gone, and I was alone again.  Sad and
grieving, I ended up looking outside of myself at those around me and
gained solace in the attention of others again.
April 2000.  Michelle entered my life and I began walking down a path
I could never have imagined, where I'd end up leaving the country I
loved and living in another (New Zealand).
June 2000.  I stepped boldly out on that new path, unsure and a little
afraid, but never hesitant.  I moved to NZ and began a new life away
from my country and my friends.  I was excited about the changes, and
about this new woman in my life.
July 2000.  I got the best job of my entire life, working for an IT
support organisation (Computerland) that looked after corporate clients.
November 2000.  The relationship with Michelle had ended, and there
was a time of grieving.  But not enough time.  I tried to be friends
with this woman who had meant so much to me, but who I discovered I
couldn't live with.
January 2001.  Came back from England where I'd gone for a holiday
with Michelle.  Spent the next two months trying to deal with more
stress than I'd ever experienced, as Michelle spent all her energy
trying to get me to come back to her.  She eventually moved back to
England in April.
April 2001.  Thinking that I had dealt with my relationship issues, I
involved myself in another relationship with Kylie.  
June 2001.  The relationship with Kylie ended, forcing me to
reconsider my thoughts on what I'd actually dealt with in the past.
November 2001.  After 5 months of choosing to be alone and doing
extensive soul-searching, I am in a place of stability and
contentment.  Seeing and understanding the part I had in the downfall
of my past relationships has been enlightening.  I was also able to
see those areas that I hadn't dealt with in the past, which were the
subsequent cause of further relationship problems.  Now there isn't a
sense of frantic activity about me anymore, inside my mind and in what I
radiate.  I'm not hung up on the need to have the attention or love of
a woman, and I can actually be friends with those women in my life,
rather than hope for something more.  
The changes that I've seen in myself - in this website - has been going
from need and attachment, to stability and even detachment (in terms of
not being attached to the idea of being with a woman).  I feel more
relaxed and in control of myself and my destiny.  I feel more
capable.  It's just awesome!
Well, I'm going to write another article for The Spirit...  This one
was inspired from a conversation last night with a friend.  Can you
accept who you are?

Why, Timothy Melley asks, have paranoia and conspiracy theory become such
prominent features of postwar American culture? In Empire of Conspiracy,
Melley explores the recent growth of anxieties about thought-control,
assassination, political indoctrination, stalking, surveillance, and
corporate and government plots. At the heart of these developments, he
believes, lies a widespread sense of crisis in the way Americans think about
human autonomy and individuality. Nothing reveals this crisis more than the
remarkably consistent form of expression that Melley calls agency panic--an
intense fear that individuals can be shaped or controlled by powerful
external forces. Drawing on a broad range of forms that manifest this
fear--including fiction, film, television, sociology, political writing,
self-help literature, and cultural theory--Melley provides a new
understanding of the relation between postwar American literature, popular
culture, and cultural theory.
Empire of Conspiracy offers insightful new readings of texts ranging from
Joseph Heller's Catch-22 to the Unabomber Manifesto, from Vance Packard's
Hidden Persuaders to recent addiction discourse, and from the stalker
novels of Margaret Atwood and Diane Johnson to the conspiracy fictions of
Thomas Pynchon, William Burroughs, Don DeLillo, and Kathy Acker. Throughout,
Melley finds recurrent anxieties about the power of large organizations to
control human beings. These fears, he contends, indicate the continuing

Christopher Black
Chris Black is a political lawyer.He defends those who have been unjustly
attacked as part of the geopolitical machinations of Great Powers. Chris
lives in Toronto, Canada, but he spends much of his time away from home. He
was part of the group of lawyers who, in the fall of 1999, brought War Crimes
charges against leaders of the NATO countries for the murderous terror
bombing of Yugoslavia, from the end of March until June, 1999. These charges
were brought before the ICTY - the 'The Hague Tribunal' - which demonstrated
its servile relationship to NATO by refusing to hold a trial.
Chris is the Chairman of the Legal Committee of the International Committee
to Defend Slobodan Milosevic. He has done much work since President Milosevic
was kidnapped and taken to The Hague, meeting with Milosevic and his support
committee. the ICDSM, and speaking to the press. (Video of one of Chris

At the same time, Chris Black is the lawyer for General Augustin
Ndindiliyimana, head of the Police under the former government of Rwanda,
which was overthrown by the U.S./Belgium-backed Rwanda Patriotic Front.
General Ndindiliyimana is being held by the ICTR - the 'Rwanda Tribunal' -
which like the 'Hague Tribunal' is an instrument for punishing those whose
crimes was to resist Great Power expansion, in this instance into Rwanda. We
will have more details soon for Chris Black's biography. Chris writes about
The Hague and the Rwanda 'Tribunals', among other issues.

Richard Hugus
Richard Hugus was born in San Francisco in 1951 and grew up in St., Paul,
Minnesota. He has lived on Cape Cod, Massachusetts for the past 17 years. He
moved to Cape Cod to be a boat builder, which he was for five years; now he
works as a house carpenter. He holds an M.A. in English from the University
of Minnesota, where he taught writing. He is active in the Cape Cod Coalition
against Iraq Sanctions and the Boston Committee for Peace and Human Rights.
He became politically active in the '60's opposing the U.S. war against
Vietnam. He has spent the last ten years exposing the environmental damage
the U.S. military has caused by dumping solvents and fuels at the
Massachusetts Military Reservation on Cape Cod.
Richard Hugus edits articles for style and clarity and writes on various

Rick Rozoff
I was born in Youngstown, Ohio on November 4, 1952. Attended an anti-war
demonstration for the first time in 1969, against Vietnam War. Graduated from
Northeastern Illinois University with a Masters in Literature. Spent over
twenty years studying literature, especially French and Russian. Taught
English at two universities in Chicago. Worked in electoral politics from
1976 to 1987, and again in 2000. Managed two state representative and one
city council campaigns, both independent and in party primaries.
Was a staff member for the Harold Washington mayoral re-election campaign in
1987.
Was active in the anti-apartheid and Central American solidarity movements in
the 1970s and 1980s.
Was active in union work, both organizing and rank and file, from 1976 to
1984.
Managed a bookstore for two years.
Have dedicated the past two and a half years of my life to defending
Yugoslavia (and ultimately the world) from NATO.

Nico Varkevisser
Nico Varkevisser began his political activity in the 1960s in The Netherlands
in the movement against the war in Vietnam. He was active in the student
movement during the 1970s. During the 1980s he was heavily involved in the
Cuba solidarity movement, in building support for the English coal miners,
and in organizing against the use of terror, including state terror, in
international affairs. This led directly to his activity against NATO's role
in Yugoslavia.
Nico Varkevisser has helped to build a center for solidarity with Yugoslavia
in Amsterdam. This includes the monthly newspaper, 'Targets,' which treats
international affairs in general and the Balkans in particular. 'Targets' has

Exercise addicts hit by Stone syndrome

IF there is one honour that even the most desperate Hollywood
attention-seeker can live without, it is having a medical syndrome
named after her.
This is the fate that has befallen Sharon Stone, the 43- year-old
actress best known as the star of the erotic thriller Basic Instinct,
who suffered a mild stroke two months ago after training for a
charity run.
Doctors believe she may have been the victim of a phenomenon
affecting a growing number of fortysomethings whose health is
jeopardised by intense workouts that trigger strokes and heart
problems. Cases have trebled in 20 years, according to one study.
The North California Medical Association wants to call it Stone
syndrome. The proposal has gone to the American Medical Association
for approval, prompting a debate about the dangers facing so-called
YMAs (young middle-aged) if they try to recreate their youthfulness
by turning too abruptly to vigorous exercise.
Stone was taken to hospital from her San Francisco home on September 29 after 
complaining of a headache, which turned out to have been caused by a ruptured blood 
vessel near the base of her skull. She was saved by a revol
utionary new operation in which platinum tubes were inserted into her neck to create a 
bypass for blood around the damaged area.
Stone has described the cause of her brain haemorrhage as a case of the mysteries, 
but physicians are linking it with exercise she did the previous day for a three-mile 
charity race.
Nobody knows how widespread Stone syndrome may be among the 35m Americans in their 
forties, but one doctor claimed last week that thousands could be dying each year 
among a baby boomer generation keen to live for ever.

Exercise has long been associated with some element of risk. Jim Fixx, the pioneer of 
jogging, dropped dead on a run at the age of 52. However, Fixx had a heart condition 
that could have killed him regardless of whether h
e ever ran or not.
Stone syndrome applies to baby boomers who plunge into a rigorous exercise regime to 
ward off ageing. It may have contributed to the death of Douglas Adams, 49, author of 
the The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, who suff
ered a heart attack on an exercise bike in his Malibu home last May while sweating 
through the plot of his latest book.
Research at Ohio State University showed a 200% increase in serious exercise-related 
incidents among men and women in their forties over the past two decades.
The Ohio researchers said many YMA men were influenced by the film American Beauty, in 
which a depressed advertising salesman played by Kevin Spacey quits his job to 
concentrate on body-building.
There is no evidence that Stone went far beyond her normal routines before becoming 
ill, but these are intensive even by Californian standards.
Stone, who was nominated for an Oscar for her role as a gangsters moll in Casino, 
spends up to three hours a day with her personal trainer. She recently added Pilates, 
a 70-year-old German stretching system devised for d
ancers, and Tae Bo, a form of aerobic martial arts, to her yoga
routines.
People in their mid-forties have to work harder to stabilise their
body, said Dr John DiFiori, an assistant professor of sports
medicine at the University of California Los Angeles. They have to
find an hour a day, which is very difficult. And they must see a
doctor first  people injure themselves by starting off without any
medical guidance at all.
A preoccupation with the gym can be costly, according to Linda
Sapadin, a New York psychologist. People might be a lot happier if
they thought about the pleasures of being over 40, and stop holding
in their stomachs. The good news is, by the time most people reach 50
or so, they have stopped worrying about such things.

Journal axes gene research on Jews and Palestinians

A keynote research paper showing that Middle Eastern Jews and
Palestinians are genetically almost identical has been pulled from a
leading journal.
Academics who have already received copies of Human Immunology have
been urged to rip out the offending pages and throw them away.
Such a drastic act of self-censorship is unprecedented in research
publishing and has created widespread disquiet, generating fears that
it may involve the suppression of scientific work that questions
Biblical dogma.
'I have authored several hundred scientific papers, some for Nature
and Science, and this has never happened to me before,' said the
article's lead author, Spanish geneticist Professor Antonio Arnaiz-
Villena, of Complutense University in Madrid. 'I am stunned.'
British geneticist Sir Walter Bodmer added: 'If the journal didn't
like the paper, they shouldn't have published it in the first place.
Why wait until it has appeared before acting like this?'
The journal's editor, Nicole Sucio-Foca, of Columbia University, New York, claims the 
article provoked such a welter of complaints over its extreme political writing that 
she was forced to repudiate it. The article has be
en removed from Human Immunology's website, while letters have been written to 
libraries and universities throughout the world asking them to ignore or 'preferably 
to physically remove the relevant pages'. Arnaiz-Villena
has been sacked from the journal's editorial board.
Dolly Tyan, president of the American Society of Histocompatibility and 
Immunogenetics, which runs the journal, told subscribers that the society is 'offended 
and embarrassed'.
The paper, 'The Origin of Palestinians and their Genetic Relatedness with other 
Mediterranean Populations', involved studying genetic variations in immune system 
genes among people in the Middle East.
In common with earlier studies, the team found no data to support the idea that Jewish 
people were genetically distinct from other people in the region. In doing so, the 
team's research challenges claims that Jews are a s
pecial, chosen people and that Judaism can only be inherited.
Jews and Palestinians in the Middle East share a very similar gene pool and must be 
considered closely related and not genetically separate, the authors state. Rivalry 
between the two races is therefore based 'in cultural
 and religious, but not in genetic differences', they conclude.
But the journal, having accepted the paper earlier this year, now claims the article 
was politically biased and was written using 'inappropriate' remarks about the 
Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Its editor told the journal
 Nature last week that she was threatened by mass resignations from members if she did 
not retract the article.
Arnaiz-Villena says he has not seen a single one of the accusations made against him, 
despite being promised the opportunity to look at the letters sent to the journal.
He accepts he used terms in the article that laid him open to criticism. There is one 
reference to Jewish 'colonists' living in the Gaza strip, and another that refers to 
Palestinian people living in 'concentration' camps
.
'Perhaps I should have used the words settlers instead of colonists, but really, what 
is the difference?' he said.
'And clearly, I should have said refugee, not concentration, camps, but given that I 
was referring to settlements outside of Israel - in Syria and Lebanon - that scarcely 
makes me anti-Jewish. References to the history of
 the region, the ones that are supposed to be politically offensive, were taken from 
the Encyclopaedia Britannica, and other text books.'
In the wake of the journal's actions, and claims of mass protests about the article, 
several scientists have now written to the society to support Arnaiz-Villena and to 
protest about their heavy-handedness.
One of them said: 'If Arnaiz-Villena had found evidence that Jewish people were 
genetically very special, instead of ordinary, you can be sure no one would have 
objected to the phrases he used in his article. This is a ve
ry sad business.'

Emilio Peire is standing outside the House of Assembly in Gibraltar's
John Mackintosh Square wrapped in a Union Jack, talking darkly about
Tony Blair, betrayal and the end of empire.
Normally Peire, a fit-looking 78-year-old with a dapper moustache,
brings his flag out only for the Queen's Birthday parade, but now it
is being brandished in protest on behalf of one of Gibraltar's myriad
political clubs, The Rock Firm War Veterans Group.
'We are not Spanish. I was with the Royal Artillery's 175 anti-
aircraft unit,' protests the old soldier, whose family arrived from
Genoa in the eighteenth century. 'Mr Blair has entered negotiations
for the transfer of sovereignty to Spain against our wishes.'
Like most Gibraltarians when they are not speaking Spanish, Peire
addresses strangers as 'sir' and talks in the quaint, precise English
that disappeared from Britain in the Sixties.
As residents of one of the last remnants of empire, he and his fellow Gibraltarians 
take being British seriously. This may be the Mediterranean, just a dozen miles from 
the north African coast, but here you can find helme
ted bobbies, bright red letter boxes, ploughman's lunches, mature cheddar cheese and a 
branch of Dorothy Perkins.
The Queen's birthday remains a public holiday and the latest memorial to their Second 
World War veterans was erected in Casemates Square two years ago.
Peire was one of several hundred angry protesters packed into the square on Friday 
night waiting to hear local politicians reply to the announcement by Foreign Secretary 
Jack Straw and his Spanish counterpart, Josep Pique
, that they planned to solve a 300-year row over the Rock's sovereignty by next summer.
Gibraltar's 30,000 people are convinced that Britain, embarrassed by the problems the 
Rock causes it within the European Union, plans to hand them over to Spain. They, in 
turn, are determined to hand Blair his most embarr
assing political defeat ever by overwhelmingly rejecting whatever deal is agreed under 
the 'Brussels process' when it is put to a local referendum.
The appearance of the elected Chief Minister of Gibraltar, Peter Caruana, provokes a 
burst of hysteria in the square. 'You can stick the Brussels process up your arse,' 
the crowd chants. Caruana tells them he has a plan f
or a new constitution so that 'the UN can delete us from their list' of colonies', and 
which would lead to 'a non-colonial relationship' with Britain.
The Chief Minister is swept away in a shiny, chauffeur-driven Rover, number plate GB1. 
Wherever he is going, it cannot be far - it rarely takes more than 10 minutes to walk 
from one spot to another in the two-and-a-quarte
r square miles of Gibraltar.
The square is suddenly a mass of shouting. 'We will all become refugees,' bawls one 
woman. 'This is like Eritrea,' screams a man. 'I wasn't born to be a prostitute,' a 
woman calls out in Spanish. 'I have the Treaty of Utr
echt here,' says a young man, reaching into his bag for a copy of the 1713 agreement 
that formalised Britain's armed takeover of the Rock.
Gibraltarians' hatred of Spain is rooted in the time, under General Franco's 
dictatorship, when the border was sealed and those with relatives in the Spanish 
border town of La Linea had to shout their family news to them
across no-man's-land on Sundays. But now that hatred is being matched by a growing 
dislike of their traditional colonial masters in Britain.
'We feel like neglected and betrayed children,' warns Harry Parody, a cab driver. 'The 
referendum is already lost.'
Peter Cumming, the only local politician prepared to voice support for some sort of 
deal with Spain, says: 'Riots are my prediction for the short-term. I hope Jack Straw 
doesn't come here for his own sake.'
It would not be the first time Gibraltarians have rioted over proposals to turn them 
into   Spaniards. When they last held a referendum on the issue, in 1967, those who 
supported a deal with Spain were dealt with violentl
y.
The chief 'dove', as the group of politicians who favoured a deal were called, had his 
yacht sunk and his car torched. Others saw their shops and businesses wrecked in a 
sudden outpouring of rage when it was discovered th
ey had visited Franco's Ministers in Madrid. Even now people refer to them as 
'traitors'.
When it came to the vote, only 44 people said they wanted to join Spain; 12,138 said 
they did not.
Caruana is married to the daughter of the man whose yacht was scuttled in 1967. A 
referendum could not be won without his support and that, so far, is being withheld. 
'There is no prospect of Gibraltar accepting any propo
sal on sovereignty,' he says.

INTRODUCTION TO SUMMARY OF EVIDENCE
Andrews Air Force Base is a huge military installation just 10 miles from the
Pentagon.
On 11 September there were two entire squadrons of combat-ready fighter jets
at Andrews. Their job was to protect the skies over Washington D.C. They
failed to do their job. Despite over one hour's advance warning of a
terrorist attack in progress, not a single Andrews fighter tried to protect
the city.
The FAA, NORAD and the military have cooperative procedures by which fighter
jets automatically intercept commercial aircraft under emergency conditions.
These procedures were not followed.
Air Force officials and others have tried to explain away the failures:
Air Force Lt. Col. Vic Warzinski, another Pentagon spokesman, [said]: 'The
Pentagon was simply not aware that this aircraft was coming our way, and I
doubt prior to Tuesday's event, anyone would have expected anything like that
here.'

Using information from the mass media and official Websites, we will show
that this is a lie.
Some of what happened on 9-11, such as planes flying into buildings, is
unusual. But most of what happened, such as commercial jets flying
off-course, transponder failures and possible hijackings, are common
emergencies. We will show that these emergencies are routinely handled with
expert efficiency based on clear rules.
The crash of the first hijacked jet into the World Trade Center made it clear
the United States was faced with an extraordinary situation. This should have
intensified the emergency responses of the air safety and defense systems.
The whole country was aware. For example, at 9:06 AM the NY Police broadcast:
 'This was a terrorist attack. Notify the Pentagon.'

 'American Forces Press Service' reported that ordinary people working at the
Pentagon worried they could be next:
'We were watching the World Trade Center on the television,' said a Navy
officer. 'When the second plane deliberately dove into the tower, someone
said, 'The World Trade Center is one of the most recognizable symbols of
America. We're sitting in a close second.'

U.S. air safety and air defense emergency systems are activated in response
to problems every day. On 9-11 they failed despite, not because of, the
extreme nature of the emergency. This could only happen if individuals in
high positions worked in a coordinated way to make them fail.
Such operatives would almost surely have failed if they tried to disrupt and
abort routine protection systems without top-level support. The failure of
the emergency systems would be noticed immediately. Moreover, given the
catastrophic nature of the attacks, the highest military authorities would be
alerted. Acting on their own, the operatives could expect that their orders
would be countermanded and that they themselves would be arrested.
The sabotage of routine protective systems, controlled by strict hierarchies,
would never have been contemplated let alone attempted absent the involvement
of the supreme U.S. military command. This includes at least U.S. President
George Bush, U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and the then-Acting
Head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Air Force General Richard B. Myers.
In the following summary of evidence we will demonstrate probable cause for
charging the above-named persons with treason for complicity in the murders
of thousands of people whom they had sworn to protect.
The summary of evidence covers the following areas:
* Andrews Air Force Base and the myth of 'no available planes;'
* The air safety/air defense systems and the myth that they were not prepared;
* The actions of George Bush on 9-11 that clearly violated his positive legal
and constitutional obligations and demonstrated consciousness of guilt;
* The testimony of General Richard B. Myers at Senate hearings on his
nomination as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In these hearings, the
contents of which were reported accurately by one lone journalist, General
Myers attempted to cover up what had happened 9-11 when he was Acting
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. He offered three mutually contradictory cover

For more than a month, federal investigators have stalked the poisonous anthrax strain 
used in the recent terrorist attacks. The search has led to culture collections and 
research labs, to microbiologists and veterinarians, to anywhere and anyone who might 
have come in contact with the Ames strain.

But with each new case, the mysteries surrounding the distribution of Ames are only 
deepening. Once thought to be accessible to thousands of researchers, the strain now 
appears to have circulated in only a small universe of laboratories. One of its main 
distributors, according to scientists, was the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of 
Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) at Fort Detrick, Md., which used Ames to test vaccines 
that could protect U.S. troops in case of a biological attack.

In following the trail, investigators have had to face the possibility that Ames may 
have slipped through an informal network of scientists to Iraq, which sought the 
strain from a British biodefense institute in 1988 but whose application was rejected 
because of concerns that it would be used to manufacture biological weapons.

Understanding the distribution of the Ames strain may be critical to the government's 
search for those behind the attacks that have killed five people, infected 13 others 
anddisrupted the federal government. In the latest case, that of a 94-year-old 
Connecticut woman who died Wednesday after contracting inhalation anthrax, federal 
investigators said DNA testing showed that the bacteria was indistinguishable from the 
strain that appeared in the attacks in Florida, Washington and New York.

Those attacks involved the Ames strain, a virulent anthrax bacteria named for the Iowa 
city where it was originally isolated, according to an Oct. 25 statement from Tom 
Ridge, the White House director of homeland security. But identifying the type of 
anthrax from among the 89 known genetic strains has done little to clear up confusion 
within the government and the scientific community over the history of the Ames 
strain, how many scientists had access to it and how it might have circulated.

When the attacks began, there was speculation that thousands of labs might have had 
access to Ames, but that number has been knocked down by anthrax experts. Philip C. 
Hanna,a microbiologist at the University of Michigan, said: I'd put it . . . between 
10 and 24.

Paul Keim, who has done genetic mapping of anthrax strains at Northern Arizona 
Universityand is reportedly assisting the FBI with the investigation, said he was 
uncertain of the number of labs with Ames but described it as a pretty small list 
that he thought was very discoverable.

Only a few facts have been clearly established. The strain of Bacillus anthracis that 
became known as Ames was first isolated decades ago from a diseased cow near Ames. A 
natural or wild strain, Ames was recognized relatively early for its virulence and 
for its ability to resist vaccines.

Scientists in America's biological weapons program chose a different strain, called 
Vollum 1B, as the lethal ingredient in U.S. anthrax weaponsin the 1950s and 1960s. But 
in the late 1970s, following the dismantling of the program by President Richard M. 
Nixon, Fort Detrick's microbiologists turned to the Ames strain to develop and test 
tougher anti-anthrax vaccines to protect against biological weapons being built in the 
Soviet Union.

There was a whole new interest because of what the Soviets were doing, said Joseph 
V. Jemski, who ran animal experiments at Fort Detrick. I remember we began working 
with three strains: One from Colorado, another from Texas -- and Ames.

Fort Detrick's work established Ames as something of a gold standard, a hardy strain 
that helps biologists gauge the effectiveness of potential vaccines and treatments. 
Soon, other researchers also became interested in Ames, and Army scientists would help 
them obtain it.

We were all just doing science, said David R. Franz, a scientist at Fort Detrick in 
the early 1980s and now vice president of the Chemical  Biological Defense Division 
of the Southern Research Institute, recalling an era of scientific openness that 
followed the secretive days of the bioweapons program. Our biowarfare era was over, 
and we were doing a lot of work with academia and studying the variant strains. Things 
just weren't as tight as they became after new federal security guidelines on 
transfers went into effect in the late 1990s.

The window of opportunity for the potential release or
rescue of American POWs and MIAs from Southeast Asia
has shut tight. Any hope that the U.S. government
might find the resolution to have a full public
disclosure on the fate of Americans from three wars,
died both with the November elections and with the
final report of the U.S. Senate Select Committee on
POWs/MIAs. The Senate Select Committee, however,
states, We want to make clear that this report is not
intended to close the door on the issue. 1223-PAGE
SENATE REPORT IS RELEASED
The 1223-page Senate report was issued this year after
nearly two years of hearings. Although the report
concludes that no American POWs are alive in Southeast
Asia, it does provide an insight into the secret
dealings and manipulations of the Executive Branch of
government in in handling the public on this issue.
The Indochina war, itself, was partly a secret war
and records were falsified at the time to maintain
that secrecy, the report states. Ever-changing
Defense Department policies confused families and
others about the official status of the missing and
obscured even the number of men who might possibly
have remained alive. The official penchant for secrecy
left many families, activists and even Members of
Congress unable to share fully in their own
government's knowledge about the fate of fellow
citizens and loved ones and this, more than anything,
contributed to the atmosphere of suspicion and doubt.


Since the early 1970s, the United States government
has indicated that all prisoners who were alive in
Southeast Asian prison camps were repatriated. The
government insisted, without any supportive evidence,
that some 2500 Americans unaccounted for after a
prisoner exchange, were dead. The Senate report now
disputes that contention. U.S. officials cannot
produce evidence that all of the missing are dead,
the report states. Many of the factors that led to
controversy surrounding the fates of Vietnam-era
POW/MIAs are present, as well, with respect to the
missing from World War II, Korea and the Cold War,
the Senate report adds. Here, too, there have been
barriers to gaining information from foreign
governments; excessive secrecy on the part of our own
government; and provocative reports, official and
unofficial, about what might have happened to those
left behind.

POSSIBILITY AMERICANS MAY STILL BE ALIVE

According to its own words, the Senate Select
Committee was created to examine the possibility that
unaccounted for Americans might have survived in
captivity after POW repatriations at Odessa in World
War II, after Operation Big Switch in Korea in 1953,
after Cold War incidents, and particularly after
Operation Homecoming in Vietnam in 1973. Whether the
Committee has succeeded in its assigned tasks will be
a matter for the public and for history to judge, the
report states. Clearly, we cannot claim, nor could we
have hoped, to have learned everything. We had neither
the authority nor the resources to make case by case
determinations with respect to the status of the
missing. The job of negotiating, conducting
interviews, visiting prisons, excavating crash sites,
investigating live-sighting reports and evaluating
archival materials can only be completed by the
Executive branch.

In summarizing its findings, the Senate Select
Committee noted that President Richard Nixon had
stated that all POWs are on the way home, and the
Defense Department, following standard procedures,
began declaring missing men dead. In 1976, the
Montgomery Committee concluded that because there was
no evidence that missing Americans had survived, they
must be dead. In 1977, a Defense Department official
said that the distinction between Americans still
listed as POWs and those listed as missing had become
academic. Nixon, Ford and Carter Administration
officials all dismissed the possibility that American
POWs had survived in Southeast Asia after Operation
Homecoming, the report emphasized. Even while
President Nixon declared all POWs were repatriated,
the President had sent a letter to the Prime Minister
of Laos stating, U.S. records show there are 317
American military men unaccounted for in Laos and it
is inconceivable that only 10 of these men would be
held prisoner in Laos. Yet dispite this protest, only
10 U.S. military personnel were released from Laos.

The Senate Committee says that it cannot share that
viewpoint. This Committee has uncovered evidence that
precludes it from taking the same view. We acknowledge
that there is no proof that U.S. POWs survived, but
neither is there proof that all of those who did not
return had died. There is evidence, moreover, that
indicates the possibility of survival, at least for a
small number, after Operation Homecoming. The

AOL Executive Vanishes
DC police are searching for a America Onilne executive who has not
been heard from in more than two weeks--something that's totally out
of character for him, according to the people who know him.

Douglas Small is director of marketing for AOL-Time Warner in Dulles,
Va.

On November 6th, the 38-year-old was talking with a friend by cell
phone from his Northwest DC row house on 1st Street. He mentioned the
contractor working on the home had just arrived, at 7:31 a.m.

That's the last anyone has heard from Small. Friends became worried
when he missed a meeting in Dulles later that morning.

Colleagues say he is extremely punctual and reliable, and as far as
they know, is not sick or depressed.

Police say they have no leads. AOL reportedly is offering a $25,000
reward for information that leads to Small's return.

KARACHI: At least 35 personnel of the US Special Forces were killed and many injured in an attack by the Taliban in southern Afghanistan, sources told The News on Friday.

The sources said 35 bodies have arrived at Jacobabad Airbase, where heavy activity is being witnessed as the US helicopters are busy bringing in bodies and injured from Afghanistan. The Pentagon and the Centcom are very much perturbed over this development and there are reports of immediate measures being contemplated to counter the situation.

The sources said 10 C-130s are ready to dispatch the bodies to the US. According to sources, the action, which began on Thursday was also backed by helicopter gunships. The US had launched attack against Taliban and al-Qaeda members but were caught by surprise and had to withdraw quickly. The US Embassy and Army sources were tight-lipped about the incident. It is one of the heaviest casualties, suffered by the US Army in one action since they launched attacks against the Taliban.

The reported killing of 35 US troops appears to be action similar to the previous aborted US heli-borne action carried out in mid-October in which the attacking US troops got pinned down in the face of severe hostile enemy fire. The US troops were caught by surprise. So intense was the attack that the Special Forces personnel had to quickly withdraw without any operational achievement. In that attack one US helicopter crashed in Afghanistan while another 'hit' chopper later crashed along with troops and crew in Pakistan.

The Baron's death is no small event when considering the importance of the Rothschild's in European and global financial history. When a Rothschild dies, does anybody hear it or understand the significance? It is ironic that while days of attention were devoted to the deaths of Princess Diana and Mother Theresa, virtually no attention is given to the death of a member of one of the wealthiest families in the world.

The following description of the Baron's demise appeared
in the Globe and Mail under his picture:
"Baron Edmond de Rothschild, philanthropist, international financier and member of the banking dynasty, died Monday in Geneva, of a respiratory illness at age 71, a spokesman said. Mr. Rothschild was president of his Geneva-based bank and financial companies as well as the Luxembourg-based Leicom Fund. He was believed to be the richest family member (of the House of Rothschild) that has played a major role in French business and culture for nearly two centuries. The Rothschilds are widely known for their wineries in the Bourdeaux region of France, including the Baron's Chateau Clarke, where he is to be buried this week in a private ceremony. Mr. Rothschild was named an officer of France's legion of honour in 1994, and its order of arts and letters in 1990. Throughout his life, he donated the equivalent of tens of millions of dollars to hospitals, museums, and the State of Israel. An avid art collector, he gave works to the Louvre museum in Paris. Mr. Rothschild's son Benjamin, 34, will succeed him as president of Paris-based Cie Financiere Holding Benjamin et Edmond de Rothschild."

In a July 1997 edition of the Globe and Mail another rare
report of another important Rothschild enterprise was made (see Rothschilds holding company fiscal year profit up 66%): The article referred to the Rothschilds Continuation Holdings AG, parent of N.M. Rothschild Sons Ltd, "a Swiss holding company for the Rothschild merchant banking business worldwide ...(with) operating profits rising to 179 million Swiss francs ($122.4 million U.S.) in the year ended March 31 from 108 million francs the previous years." A 66% profit increase is no small feat especially when you consider their line of business. In the article, Sir Evelyn de Rothschild, chairman of Rothschild's Continuation, noted "We've got a good balance of businesses and on the whole we've had a pretty good run." Sir Evelyn also noted that the company has three global business lines "treasury and bullion trading; resource banking, or banking for the mining industry; and investment banking." Such stupendous returns on a supposedly barbarous relic, gold, make even George Soros's Quantum Fund returns seem meagre. It is important to note that this rare exposure of the family business coincides with the recent rare exposé by the LBMA that the equivalent of between 30-42 million ounces of gold per day are traded in London.
The more significant cousin of RCH AG is in fact N.M. Rothschild and Sons Ltd, named after Nathan Mayer Rothschild, one of the five sons of Mayer Amschel Rothschild, who operated the London-based house of the family merchant banking enterprise in the latter part of the 18th and early 19th century. Atlanta, Nov. 23 (Bloomberg) -- President George W. Bush cites the 1942 military tribunal convened to prosecute eight Nazis plotting attacks on U.S. soil to show how he wants to prosecute present-day terrorists.

It's a model, all right.

It's a model of a powerful government official using the secrecy of a military tribunal to deceive the public, falsely embellish his reputation, break promises to a whistleblower and sit by while a 30-year prison sentence is given to the man who thwarted the Nazi sabotage, a man to whom the agency had promised a presidential pardon.

That official was Federal Bureau of Investigation Director J. Edgar Hoover.

His aim was glory for cracking this hugely important case. The problem was that it took no detective work whatsoever to crack the case.

All it took was for FBI agents to believe a man, George Dasch, who twice called and then walked into FBI headquarters to tell them about the plot.

Dasch told them that Nazi submarines had deposited him and seven other Germans at U.S. shores in New York and Florida in recent days. Supplied with explosives and timing devices, their mission was to blow up certain U.S. military equipment factories, transportation structures and Jewish-owned department stores.

Dasch, aided by another would-be saboteur, Ernst Burger, led the FBI to the other six Germans, 14 American collaborators, $174,588 and a cache of explosives.

Pardon Promised

In return, FBI agents promised Dasch that if he pleaded guilty to his role in the plot, he'd get a prison sentence of no more than six months followed by a presidential pardon.

It didn't turn out that way.

During the 18-day trial, held in an FBI training room at the Justice Department building, agents played down Dasch's and Burger's cooperation, although one agent acknowledged Dasch had been promised the pardon.

This was not reported, since no journalists were allowed to cover the trial. Secrecy was necessary, Attorney General Francis Biddle explained beforehand, to prevent America's enemies from learning ``how our intelligence services are equipped to work against them.''

All eight Germans were convicted and six were executed, less than two months after Dasch arrived by submarine. Burger got a life sentence; Dasch got 30 years.

Hoover Censors Report

Even after the war ended and a new attorney general, Tom Clark, wanted to disclose what had happened at the trial, Hoover intervened.

He censored the report the Justice Department produced, cutting out information that could ``discredit or embarrass the bureau,'' Hoover wrote in a memo. Left out was any mention of the pardon promise and the fact that Dasch's own confession sparked the investigation.

Decades passed and Hoover died before the full story came out. Through Freedom of Information Act requests, Atlanta Constitution reporter Seth Kantor obtained the trial transcript, FBI reports and other documents and wrote a series of stories in 1980.

Those stories, on which this account is based, were recounted in an article this week by Cox News Service.

Prison Riot

As for Dasch, he'd been sent to the Atlanta Federal Penitentiary where his presence prompted a prison riot in 1944. Dasch, whom inmates threatened to throw off a five-story building, had been the principal target of the rioting prisoners, according to Biddle.

He survived and was transferred to Leavenworth prison in Kansas.

With pressure from new lawyers to release Dasch and Burger, President Harry Truman in 1948 ordered them deported to West Germany where they'd eventually be free. The White House statement continued the deception in explaining Truman's generosity toward these infamous Nazis: ``After their arrest, Burger and Dasch gave full and complete identities of all connected with the sabotage plot.''

This implied it was only after the FBI had tracked them down that they confessed.

Nor did this version help Dasch in post-war Germany. Nazi sympathizers threatened to avenge the executions of the other six saboteurs and the thwarting of Hitler's sabotage plans, prompting Dasch to move from city to city, job to job. By 1980, his trail had vanished, Kantor wrote. He has since died, according to news reports.

`Museum Piece'

Bush has ordered the creation of military commissions to conduct tribunals for the prosecution of non-U.S. citizens accused of terrorism against the United States. The speed of such tribunals, their portability, the availability of the death penalty and their looser rules make them a good option, in Bush's view.

But looser rules also mean a greater likelihood that the innocent would be convicted and the system manipulated by officials. Secrecy would mean no public scrutiny.

It holds government contracts for "hot" facilities for viral research, claiming extensive experience with up to Level 3 facilities and is under consideration as operator of Plum Island's upgrade to Level 4 for research on zoonotic (capable of infecting humans as well as animals) diseases. 

A Plum Island job ad says "many employees live in Connecticut and take the ferry from New London to Orient Point, NY" from which a Center boat goes to the island. The most recent anthrax death occurred in Oxford, CT, a few miles from New London. 

The firm has had several labor relations problems such as employee suits and unionization squabbles. It is reportedly fiercely anti-union. Another report claims its continuing labor problems may have affected a government bid. 

The firm also produces virtual military training programs in urban warfare and aircraft operation. It received a lot of press coverage for adopting and adapting Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Rogue Spear game engine for military training programs. 

The firm also operates military helicopter facilities and services the aircraft.

(Conspiracy Nation, 11/25/01) -- George Washington envisioned a wooded area alongside the Potomac River as the new federal city. The highest hill in the area, Jenkins Heights, was then owned by Daniel Carroll. In 1663, the owner of this land had been Francis Pope. Pope's name for the high hill was Rome, and he called the nearby waterway the Tiber. [1]

Ancient Rome was a mere city which conquered the world. Although it apparently declined and fell, some say it did not fall but changed its form into the Roman Catholic Church and still dominates the world. Echoing this idea, science fiction writer Philip K. Dick theorized an enormous false memory imposed on all humanity in which the last 2000 years of "history" never happened. According to Dick, author of The VALIS Trilogy, we have been brainwashed by the Roman Empire to think we are living in what is really a totally false world. [2]

Washington's new Rome was surveyed, planned, designed and built largely by members of the secret society of Freemasons. On October 13, 1792 the cornerstone was laid for the President's House (now known as the White House). This cornerstone ceremony was performed by "the Free Masons of George-town and its vicinity," Georgetown Lodge No. 9 of Maryland. A year later, in September of 1793, freemason George Washington and Georgetown Lodge No. 9 performed another cornerstone ceremony, this time for the future Capitol Building. [1]

The name "Capitol" relates to the Latin *Capitolium*, a temple of Jupiter at Rome on the Capitoline hill. [3]

George Washington was initiated into Freemasonry on November 4, 1752. He was the first Master of the Alexandria Lodge No. 22 between April 1788 and December 1789; he was therefore a Master Mason upon his uncontested inauguration as first U.S. president on April 30, 1789. A lambskin apron with Masonic symbols, given to him by the French general Lafayette, was worn by Washington during the Capitol cornerstone ceremony. When he died, Washington was buried with Masonic honors; all except one of his pallbearers were members of Alexandria Lodge No. 22. [1]

The obelisk inspired Washington Monument was originally planned as a tomb for the deceased Master Mason Washington. But when Washington's wife Martha died, it became impossible to legally exhume the remains of the first president and rebury them in the Capitoline City.

The original conception for the design of the Washington Monument was a pyramid, 100 feet square at the base. The project was delayed. In 1833, the Washington National Monument Society's first design for the memorial was a truncated pyramid, with interior light coming from an apex "oculus" (eye). [1] This design mirrors the Illuminati symbol of pyramid with all-seeing eye at the apex. The finally realized Washington Monument, dedicated on February 21, 1885, combines the Egyptian themes of obelisk and pyramid, with the pyramid being at the top.

Both sides of the Great Seal of the United States appear on the back of the one-dollar Federal Reserve note. The front of the Seal has an eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch. The reverse side of the Seal, showing a truncated pyramid with all-seeing eye at the top, was originally not well known. The front of the Seal was cut in brass as a die in 1780 and was immediately used to authenticate official documents. But the reverse side, despite Congressional order to cut it as a die, was not implemented. Over 100 years after 1780, the reverse had still not been engraved. [1]

At the bottom of the pyramid, the Seal bears the motto "Novus Ordo Seclorum." This motto is adapted from a line in the Roman poet Virgil's "Bucolics": "...magnus ab integro saeclorum nascitur ordo" (the great series of ages begins anew). [1] Virgil's line, in turn, was inspired by the secret Sibyline books, said to contain details of the destiny of the Roman empire. [4]

The Roman legions marched behind the imperial eagle. The U.S. legions march behind the eagle of empire. In at least one sense Philip K. Dick was correct when he wrote, "the Empire never ended.

House and John Ashcroft make ongoing end runs around liberties guaranteed by our most 
sacred document, you remain a true patriotic voice.

Bush has told us to go about our normal busines and show the terrorists that they 
cannot change our American ways.  Yet, the White House and Ashcroft have conceded 
points to the terrorists, in a tragic irony, by undermining our most basic 
Constitutional rights.  The Republican Party has always jawboned about its partiotism. 
 But it is not patriotic to compromise our freedoms and our legal system.

Our founding leaders must be hanging their heads in disapproval at the wholesale

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Attorney General John Ashcroft will face a tough grilling from 
lawmakers in coming weeks over President Bush's proposal to create secret military 
tribunals and employ other ``ad hoc, outside the justice system methods'' to fighting 
terrorism, the Senate Judiciary Committee chairman said on Sunday.

Chairman Sen. Patrick Leahy, a Vermont Democrat, said lawmakers in both parties were 
upset with Ashcroft, who won sweeping new powers to fight terrorism in post-Sept. 11 
legislation and has since announced other controversial measures such as monitoring 
conversations between suspects and defense attorneys and interviewing thousands of 
young men from the Middle East.

Leahy, who negotiated the anti-terror legislation with Ashcroft last month, noted on 
NBC's ``Meet the Press'' that the attorney general had held out the likelihood of 
immediate arrests of terror suspects once those new prosecutorial powers were granted.

The wave of arrests did not materialize, and Ashcroft has instead announced new 
measures including a proposal for secret military tribunals that would not follow the 
usual rules and standards of the U.S. criminal justice system, Leahy said.

``We pick up the paper every morning and here's, 'We're going to wiretap defense 
counsel, we're going to do these ad-hoc, outside-the-justice-system methods,''' Leahy 
said, referring to the administration's tactics.

Asked if he was upset with Ashcroft, Leahy emphatically answered, ``Yes, very much 
so.'' Leahy plans a preliminary hearing this week and expects Ashcroft to testify the 
following week, an appearance that he said would not be ``perfunctory.''

President Bush has said he wants the option of instituting military tribunals for 
accused terrorists, in which military officers would act as judge and jury.

Trials could be secret, with procedures and composition of the courts to be determined 
by the U.S. defense secretary and military commanders. The usual rules of evidence and 
right to defense counsel would not necessarily apply, Leahy noted.

Bush said he wanted to have that option if any al Qaeda members linked to the Sept. 11 
suicide aircraft attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon are apprehended.

However, critics on both the left and right have said these tribunals would abrogate 
civil liberties and undercut the fundamentals of the U.S. criminal justice system.

Leahy noted he was not disposed to be soft on terrorism, particularly since he 
personally was the target of an anthrax letter that investigators believe may have 
contained enough of the potent bacteria to kill up to 100,000 people.

But he said he was not convinced that military tribunals were the only or the best way 
to achieve justice.

``We all agree that there should be justice here,'' Leahy said. ``But let's be a 
little bit careful how we do it.''

KARACHI: At least 35 personnel of the US Special Forces were killed and many injured in an attack by the Taliban in southern Afghanistan, sources told The News on Friday.
The sources said 35 bodies have arrived at Jacobabad Airbase, where heavy activity is being witnessed as the US helicopters are busy bringing in bodies and injured from Afghanistan. The Pentagon and the Centcom are very much perturbed over this development and there are reports of immediate measures being contemplated to counter the situation.
The sources said 10 C-130s are ready to dispatch the bodies to the US. According to sources, the action, which began on Thursday was also backed by helicopter gunships. The US had launched attack against Taliban and al-Qaeda members but were caught by surprise and had to withdraw quickly. The US Embassy and Army sources were tight-lipped about the incident. It is one of the heaviest casualties, suffered by the US Army in one action since they launched attacks against the Taliban.
The reported killing of 35 US troops appears to be action similar to the previous aborted US heli-borne action carried out in mid-October in which the attacking US troops got pinned down in the face of severe hostile enemy fire. The US troops were caught by surprise. So intense was the attack that the Special Forces personnel had to quickly withdraw without any operational achievement. In that attack one US helicopter crashed in Afghanistan while another 'hit' chopper later crashed along with troops and crew in Pakistan.

In 1898 the Americans came to our country in force and in a series of rapid
maneuvers seized state power. Filipino resistance to the American invasion
was prolonged and bitterly fought. It was a virtually suicidal struggle
sustained for ten years against an enemy armed with superior technology and
vast resources, an enemy which unleashed depopulation campaigns of such
unprecedented ferocity that they sent hundreds of thousands of our countrymen
to an early grave. The United States established a colony in the Philippines
which behind a more sophisticated facade remains in force even to this day.

Why did this happen? Why did the Americans come here? What was their purpose?
What was their motive? For many years, the real motives of the American
Command were kept hidden not only from the Filipino people but also from the
vast majority of the American people. Filipino nationalist writers have given
their answers to these questions based on available documents and an
anti-imperialist analytical framework. In this book, Luzviminda Bartolome
Francisco, a Filipina of peasant origins, and Jonathan Shepard Fast, an
American writer, provide us with a new analysis, using corporate records and
other primary source material, heretofore undiscovered or otherwise
unavailable.

Why has a study of this type taken so long in coming? There are three
reasons. First, to understand the real motives of the men who shaped American
policy, men such as William McKinley, Nelson Aldrich, Mark Hanna and Henry
Havemeyer, it is necessary to understand some of the intricacies of corporate
affairs and the degree to which certain corporations, e.g. the American Sugar
Refining Company, had command of the political process in America in the'
1890's. It is also necessary to understand that the members of the Aldrich
Gang had a powerful motive to prevent their real purpose from being
discovered. For these were not public men, despite their prominence in the
affairs of the American nation. Although they worked closely together they
were most often to be found meeting privately in each other's homes, Clubs,
and yachts, or at exclusive resorts such as the Jekyll Island Club in
Georgia, where they knew they could make their plans free from public gaze.
When they did correspond, which was infrequently, their letters often ended
with the warning to each other: read and burn. The McKinley Papers in the
Library of Congress are the skimpiest of the American Presidential
Collections. Aldrich's Papers, were, at his demand, sealed for fifty years
after his death, and thereafter only portions were made available to the
public. The Havemeyer Papers remain unavailable despite their historic
importance to five nations.

Second, those few who were party to what Francisco and Fast call the
conspiracy had an overwhelmingly powerful motive to fabricate colonial
objectives which they thought would win popular support for their policies.

African workers were told that imperialism would be. to their advantage in
terms of higher wages and steady employment as industry, geared up to supply
the markets of the East. American farmers were told cotton and wheat prices
would inevitably rise as American farm products carved out markets in Asia.
Filipinos were told it was all being dome for their own good.

Third, Filipinos suffered special handicaps when it came to developing an
analysis of what had happened to their country. The greatest of these was a
highly successful system of censorship, sometimes explicit, sometimes de
facto which prohibited any independent Filipino investigation of the facts
surrounding American imperialism until decades after the event. The American
Commander in the Philippine-American War, General Arthur McArthur, remarked
in a candid moment that it Would take ten years of bayonet treatment to
subdue the Filipinos and another three generations of propagandizing to
eliminate from the Filipino mind consciousness of what had happened.

Even the documents of our own participation in the anti-imperialist
struggle were denied to us. Approximately 650 file cases pertaining to all
aspects of the Government of the Republic of the Philippines were seized by
the Americans at the turn of the century and removed to Washington where for
decades they remained under lock and key.

It should come as little comfort for us to discover that the American
people themselves do not know the real nature of their imperial past. The
fact that a giant, politically well-connected corporate monopoly, which by
1898 had al-ready compiled a sorry history of corporate illegality, was the
overwhelming beneficiary, in specific dollars  and cents terms, of the
McKinley Government's colonial
