First of all I desire to point out it was not my intention to be rude or
blame nobody.
Nevertheless the reply " that's quite easy - because none of those who want
this feature become
active, fork the code and simply implement the stuff ... " is really
impolite.
I cannot write C and cannot start learning C at 52 only to send a pull
request that will be ignored...

Since I am skilled with English I resumed the Italian translation of the
old user manual and took over me (and another nice Italian guy that is
hardly helping me) the Italian translation of the GUI.
dt 3 is translated in Italian thanks to my (and Matteo) hard and FREE job
despite the fact I suffered some health problems.
I am well aware of the efforts devs put in their FREE job every time and
have the maximum respect towards all of you!

I have been using dt since some years and WILL use dt, because I think it
is simply the best raw developer for Linux.
I accepted and will accept the fact you cannot implement such a feature.
Only I cannot agree with this decision.

I think it is important to listen for users' features requests.
If you do not listen to users you will lose some of them.
The same thing happens when you give users impolite replies.

Have a very pleasant evening :-)

Re: [darktable-user] Still no GUI module order possible?

2021-02-17 Thread Maurizio Paglia
Hi all,
I desire to let you have my opinion about this matter.
In the past I pushed a lot to have this feature. Together with me many
other USERS did the same...
Really, I cannot understand why we cannot have a tab on which any USER can
list his/her preferred modules and can order them as per his/her preferred
workflow.

If I look to a car I probably can identify 70% of its visible components.
If I look to a disassembled car, I could identify 20% of components.
Despite this fact I drive a car every day and I know perfectly how to do a
lot of things because I am COMFORTABLE with its "GUI".

My concern is we are not asking to change dt GUI.
We do not want to change the multi-sliders interface with a single-slide
one (LR, RT).
We simply ask to have a tab with a COMFORTABLE list of modules.
The pipeline is another matter.

Only a TECHNICIAN can know very well how the pipeline works and why.
A normal user or also an advanced user (pro photographer) does not know
and, probably, does not care.
I have to develop an image trying to obtain a pleasant result.
I am a photographer (a USER), not an engineer (a TECHNICIAN).

I have great respect for all devs putting such efforts in this software.
dt is really good and in the recent past months has growth a lot!

Nevertheless I still cannot understand why users cannot be COMFORTABLE with
it...

Thanks,
Maurizio

Re: [darktable-user] Change to Linux

2020-08-06 Thread Maurizio Paglia
Ciao Peter,
I am not sure I have CLEARLY understood your questions...
First of all please note Linux can read/write a LOT of filesystems so you
could consider one readable/writable from both OSs in the case you will
decide to revert back to MacOS

Now regarding sidecar files.
dt organizes all information in its database.
THEN writes the same info in an XMP files.
You can consider the XMP files like a backup copy you can use in the case
the internal database will be corrupted or if you desire to pass data to
another software.

On a new darktable installation you simply need to overwrite the dt
database (that will be empty) with your one.
dt uses SQLite so you have only to copy/paste a couple of text files. Very
easy.
Alternatively you can switch on the option 'Look for updated XMP files on
startup'.
In this case dt will check if the information on the XMP files are NEWER
than those in the internal database and - in this case - will update the
database.
This could be a time consuming operation because this check will be done on
EACH opened image.

Do we receive a further communication when the manual will be ready for the

Re: [darktable-user] Darktable: translation in Italian not available in the latest version

2019-08-28 Thread Maurizio Paglia
Sorry but noticed only now I made a mess with releases... :-(
dt version fully translated: 2.4
dt version only in English: 2.6
so you can compile yourself 2.6 to have a version partially translated.

Re: [darktable-user] Darktable: translation in Italian not available in the latest version

2019-08-27 Thread Maurizio Paglia
Ciao Emanuele,
dt 2.7 has any Italian GUI because its maintainer was not in the position
to finalize this work owing to other important engagements.

I am following the translation of the Italian manual but - with the
authorization of the present GUI maintainer - will take care also of the
translation of the GUI.
This job will be targeted on the next new dt release (Xmas 2019) because I
should have the help of another couple of Italian guys.

If you need a quick solution you can show dt 2.6 (it is completely in
Italian but you will lack some interesting new modules like Filmic).
Viceversa you can compile dt 2.7 yourself from GitHub sources (it will all
be in Italian EXCEPT some modules/labels)

If you desire to have dt 2.7 completely translated you can get in touch
with me on my mail so we can see together if we can find a mutual solution.

Thanks!
Maurizio

Hi Bruce,
basically I agree with Patrick.
I tried the assembly with darktable and the great plugin pano-pro (that
uses the same engine of Hugin).
I left all options to the default in order to see how the plugin works.
During the assembly the plugin showed some errors because it cannot find
EXIF data!
The best result I obtained is here

Ciao Matthieu,
please apologize but I was confused by the page layout that was very
similar to darktable.org (so I thought you were writing a two-languages
article for darktable.org).
Since this is not exactly this way, I think dt webmaster will go on with an
only-English website like it is today.

In this case can I publish the italian version on my blog?
Of course all credits will be clearly published as well!

Thanks,
Maurizio

Re: [darktable-user] One panel with basics

2018-07-13 Thread Maurizio Paglia
Lightroom 'easy sliders' are available also in Rawtherapee i.e. Rawtherapee
followed the same LR approach.
DT is different (as correctly Remco said).
I started developing my raw files with DT, I feel very comfortable with it
and when I was forced to use LR (during a training course) I felt
disoriented because with DT I can do EXACTLY what I need, with LR I
cannot...
I am not a developer but I think if we want double commands on each module,
it means dt team will have to write TWO different algorithms for EACH
module.
This is a huge effort for a rather small team!
You can feel uncomfortable with 'multi sliders' but you have available
presets and styles that can be used as starting point and will welp to learn
(IF you want and/or have time to learn).
A 'single slide' control can seem easy to use but I am not so sure...

Cheers,
Maurizio

I do not know.
First of all I have to finish the work that needs to be approved by the

@ François
Among the Lua scripts you should find one that let you export the edited
raw in GIMP.
This is quite similar to the behaviour you are looking for.
Maybe you can try it

Re: [darktable-user] Import

2018-04-10 Thread Maurizio Paglia
Hi,
if your disks are connected via USB please follow the instructions Vietor
gives you.
It is very simple.
Please note IMPORT does not means you will import your images into
darktable: images (files) will remain on board your disk, darktable will
only catch the necessary information in order to let you develop your files.

Thank you,

## Hell Froze Over

- As you might have read on our [news post](https://www.darktable.
org/2017/08/
darktable-for-windows/) we finally ported darktable to Windows and intend to
support it in the future. At the moment it's still lacking a few features
(for
example there is no printing support), has a few limitations (tethering
requires special drivers to be installed) and comes with its own set of bugs
(TIFF import and export doesn't support non-ASCII characters in file names).
But overall we are confident that it's quite usable already and hope you
will
enjoy it. A very special thanks goes to Peter Budai who finally convinced us
to agree to the port and who did most of the work.

## The Big Ones

- A new module for haze removal
- The local contrast module can now be pushed much further, it also got a
new
[local laplacian](https://www.darktable.org/2017/11/local-
laplacian-pyramids/)
mode
- Add undo support for masks and more intelligent grouping of undo steps
- Blending now allows to display individual channels using false colors
- darktable now supports loading Fujifilm compressed RAFs
- darktable now supports loading floating point HDR DNGs as written by
HDRMERGE
- We also added channel specific blend modes for Lab and RGB color spaces
- The base curve module allows for more control of the [exposure fusion]
range-with-exposure-fusion/) feature using the newly added bias slider
- The tonecurve module now supports auto colour adjustment in RGB
- Add absolute color input as an option to the color look up table module
- A new X-Trans demosaicing algorithm, Frequency Domain Chroma, was
implemented.
- You can now choose from pre-defined scheduling profiles for OpenCL
- Speaking of OpenCL, darktable now allows to force-use OpenCL for a
specific
pixelpipe
- XMP sidecar files are no longer written to disk when the content didn't
actually change. That mostly helps with network storage and backup systems
that use files' time stamps

## New Features And Changes

- Show a dialog window that tells when locking the database/library failed
- Don't shade the whole region on the map when searching for a location.
Instead just draw a border around it.
- Also in map mode: Clear the search list and map indicators when resetting
the search module.
- With OsmGPSMap newer than version 1.1.0 (i.e., anything released after
that
OsmGPSMap version) the map will show copyright info.
- Running jobs with a progressbar (mostly import and export) will show that
progress bar ontop the window entry in your task bar – if the system
supports
it. It should work on GNOME, KDE and Windows at least.
- Add bash like string replacement for variables (export, watermark, session
settings)
- Add a preferences option to ask before removing empty dirs
- The "colorbalance" module got a lot faster, thanks to SSE optimized code
- Make gradient sliders a little more colorful
- Make PNG compression level used for exporting configurable
- On OSX, load single images from command line or via drag in darkroom
mode
- Add an option to omit the intermediate tag h

Ciao Gianluca,
if you are a Linux user and have KDE installed you can use Digikam as Photo

You can call darktable from within Digikam.
If you are a Gnome (or derivated) user I think you can use Shotwell or

Hi Paul,

However, if you simply desire to see how the image looks at different

See chapter 3.3.3 of the user manual.

Re: [darktable-user] Re: Is it possible to configure "alias lenses"

2017-07-26 Thread Maurizio Paglia
Dear Al,
I have the same problem with your Tamron lens.
Since I am not a technician it is difficult and time consuming for me try
to understand how lensfun works and so on.

The easiest solution I found has been suggested by Houz from dt team.
I have a Tamron SP AF 17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II VC LD Aspherical [IF] but the
version of darktable shipped with my Linux distribution recognizes only the
non VC one.
Since the lens correction of the non VC lens works perfectly, you can tell
darktable to change the lens type during the import of the images.
Create the following lua script

local dt = require "darktable"
dt.register_event("post-import-image",
  function (event, image)
if image.exif_lens == "Tamron SP AF 17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II VC LD
Aspherical [IF]" then

image.exif_lens = "Tamron SP AF 17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical [IF]"

end
  end)

During the import process dt will write in database the non VC lens
information and you can apply lens correction module in a completely
automatic way!

Hi Paul,
you can create several masks for each module and each mask will receive the
same parameters you set in the module itself.
If you desire to apply different settings simply create a new module istance,
then go ahead with other mask(s) and apply different settings.

@ Remco,
I think for a 'standard' user the procedure for add a lens to lensfun
database is not so easy.
Tobias script will work fine and you need only to modify the script
entering two text strings.

@ Al,
Tobias script simply instruct darktable to write in EXIF data lens A if the
photo has been taken with lens B. Raw file is never touched!

If the destination directory is not the problem, it means the problem is the
source one...
I am quite sure the path to your darktable documentation contains another
symlink.
Check each directory (one by one) and create the symlink on the Desktop
following a path without any other symlink.
I am using OpenSuse and the link to manual is /usr/share/doc/packages/
darktable-doc/darktable-usermanual.pdf
ln -s /usr/share/doc/packages/darktable-doc/darktable-usermanual.pdf /home//Desktop/
works fine!
You could also try to create the symlink using a function/shortcut of your file
manager.

Try to create the softlink in a place different than Desktop

[darktable-user] Lua scripts

2017-03-17 Thread Maurizio
Hi all,
it seems not possible to run lua scripts despite all elementary tests (like
print Hello World) are working...
I made a luarc file in $HOME/.config/darktable
IN the same directory I created the lua/ folder
inside the lua/ folder i put official/ and contrib/ folders with all scripts.

Now go back to luarc file...
I wrote
require "official/gimp"
nothing happens
require "lua/official/gimp"
nothing happens again

Where is the mistake?
Thank you,

If I upload your NEF file and set the white balance to 'camera' the settings
are the following:
- tint 1.001
- temperature 4775K
- red 2.012
- green 1.000
- blue 1.383
an all these data comes from EXIV data in your file.
Is it the same for you?

Sorry, my explanation was not good.
If I load your NEF file to dt it is all OK but white balance module is ON.
If I switch white balance module OFF the result is exactly the same of your
green image.
So, please check if your white module is ON and if you have selected the
appropriate white balance. Maybe try some different choice to see if result
changes as well

Not sure why, but I have had an ongoing problem with 'double-click'
whenever I use kde. The problem plagued me on a number of programs and on
several O/S, but it was a significant nuisance with darktable. I have
finally settled on using OpenSUSE with xfce.

In my case it may be a hardware problem since others appear not to have the
