[darktable-user] Lens correction not working

2020-11-15 Thread t_drei

Hi,

Lens correction doesn't work anymore for my Sony RX10M4.

In earlier versions of darktable, the camera was recognized and lens
correction (geometry) worked just fine. Now, there's no recognition of
the camera, and I cannot choose it from the list (my other two cameras
are still there, e.g. Sony RX100M3, but the RX 10s are missing).

I use darktable 3.2.1 / Ubuntu; as I'm only a happy user of darktable
(no IT expert), I didn't change any part of the installation.

Any suggestion what I could do?

Best regards, Regina

[darktable-user] lens correction

2020-03-07 Thread csaba molnar
Hi,
I have got a Lumix DC-FZ82 camera.
I also used DT 3.0.0 (Win10) well with my TZ60 camera.
But my new camera (FZ82) lens data is not in "lens correction" module.
So I cant use DT at the moment.
I checked "lensfun.sourceforge.net" and realized that FZ82 is not present.
Shall I wait for new version of DT or are there any other solution?
Thanx for your suggestions. :)

Re: [darktable-user] lens correction corrupts image export

2020-02-04 Thread Subhash Fotografie
Now I have an image with has no lens correction and I cannot export it.
Sometimes it gets completely black (except the watermark), sometimes it is
distorted like the one mentioned below.

Is this a known bug? Are there workarounds?

Thank you for suggestions!

[darktable-user] lens correction corrupts image export

2020-01-26 Thread Subhash Fotografie
If I export an image with lens correction activated it gets corrupted:

https://www.subhash.at/fotoblog/wp-content/uploads/beim_bahnhof_201209523_mit_Objektivkorrektur.jpg

DT 3.0.0 on Mac
Lens: Olympus 12-60mm f/2.8-4

Deactivating lens correction leads to a correct image. I have seen a similar
appearance before but with an image without lens correction used. This other
image I could not export correctly.

Hi Frieder,
copied this from a google search

he lens correction profiles (distortion and vignetting) are embedded in the
Nikon NEF metadata. They're not actually applied to the image but instead used
by raw processors such as ACR/LR, which apply the correction profile to the
image when you import the raw.

When creating a new preset, it is possible to define to use it
automatically in some specific cases. Therefore one of the Options
in the naming-dialoque must be activated.
Activating one of the ceckboxes opens more Input fields whicht allows
to define this style automatically used for a specific lens.

I made a screeshot of the dialoque, albeit it is in german, I hope it
helps finding this hidden options.

[darktable-user] Lens Correction issues

2019-12-05 Thread Dusenberg

Hi

Over last few months I've finally created a style which I can
apply to all my landscape shots and which produces what I think
are excellent images which usually need little or no manual
attention.  A big thanks to all the developers - DT is a great
  piece of software.

However I do have two issues with the Lens Correction module which
I can't resolve and was hoping someone out there may know the
answers.  I run DT 2.6.2 on a laptop with Linux Mint 19.1 Cinnamon
  (Ubuntu 18.4).

  Issue 1:
My Nikon D810 automatically applies lens distortion correction so
the raw files are already corrected for the lens in use.  I have
Nikon AF-S lenses so this works consistently and accurately.
However the camera does not correct for TCA.  For example, my
24-70 lens generally needs a red correction of 1.00020-1.00040
while my 70-200 needs 1.00010-1.00030. I have to do this manually
for every shot which is a pain and 'something else to do'. What I
want is for DT to apply Lens Correction as part of my style so
that lens and shot data of the current image is used but then only
the TCA correction is applied with a preset value of say
red:1.00030 for the 24-70 lens. I can then amend this if necessary
during my normal workflow review of each image. I have tried and
failed to do this.  The problem I find is that if I open LC in
Darkroom, set it to TCA Only enter a correction and save as a
preset, when I use that preset whether alone or as part of a
style, LC no longer looks up the lens and shot data for the
current image, but applies all the settings present during the
creation of the preset - which means the wrong lens, f/stop,
distance. I may be missing something obvious but I've no idea what
it is.  Does anyone know how to do what I need?

  Issue 2:
  I have a Nikor AF-S 18-35mm f/3.5–4.5G ED lens which doesn't
appear in Lensfun supported lenses list. However for TCA
correction, the Nikkor AF-S 16-35mm f/4G ED entry in LC works
satisfactorily. The problem is I can't find a way to get LC to use
the 16-35mm lens entry instead of the as-shot lens.  Again, any
  ideas?

  Thanks

I am interested in the solution to this. My Sigma 150-600 Contemporary is
not identified. It is in the list but not shown on screen and I can't
scroll to it. I have to put my mouse pointer on the last Sigma lens that is
being displayed and then press down arrow 5 times then "Enter". This then
selects my lens and sets the correction. A minor niggle in an application I
am growing to really like.

[darktable-user] Lens Correction not scrolling list of lenses

2019-06-28 Thread Sheridan Price
Hi
I'm using Windows 10 and DT 2.6.2.

I'm trying to apply the lens Correction module but..it doesn't find my lens
- specifically Nikon D80 camera and Nikon AF-S DX VR NIKKOR 55-200mm
f/4-5.6 G IF-ED and doesn't allow me to scroll the lens list.

In the correction module I left click on lens and get the menu of lens
types "BelOMO through to Zenit" which I assume is the last one in the list
as I can't scroll up or down here either, but Nikon shows up in the middle
so I can either left click or hover and I get another scroll list now of
lenses from NIKKOR AI-S 6mm... through to NIKKOR AF-S 24-85mm... Obviously
my lens is not in the list shown but I can not scroll the list down into
the 55mm lens to choose it or one close to it.

This did work in 2.6.1

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks muchly and you developers have created a great program.

Regards
Sheridan

[darktable-user] lens correction and shape of the masks

2019-03-06 Thread Jean-Luc Coulon (f5ibh)
 Hi
I've used a 14 mm Samyang lens on a Canon EOS 6D MkII to shoot the Milky
Way.
I've applied the lens corrections from darktable (in this case, distorsion
is relevant).

If I use thereafter a drawn mask with a gradient, the shape of the gradient
is curved the opposite way the correction is done.

i.e. the distorsion is basically a barrel.
And the curve of the gradient depends where I put it: it is straight in the
middle and concave in the lower or upper part of the picture.

This is quite annoying because I'm always chasing the right position of the
gradient.

I would suggest that at least enabling by default for fixed-lens cameras would
make sense, since there's no problem with lens ID ambiguity, and many such
cameras really need the correction to produce usable images (having been
designed with the assumption that it will be applied).

I put on "Lens Correction" manually for nearly every single picture.
It would be an improvement to have a global option like

   "Apply lens correction by default"

 - on new pictures while importing
When
 - Camera can be detected

Thanks for that clarification. I will look into your advice regarding
updating the lensfun-db, it sounds promising. Regarding the functionality
of darktable I understand it like this: it means that "auto-selection" is
only possible when everything (camera, lens, focal length) is all
auto-selected. It seems to be impossible to set certian aspects manually
and for example then let darktable only auto-select the focal length. There
might be use-cases where this could be useful and an update of the
lensfun-db is out of question.

lensfun-update-data... if for some reason you can't use that utility, the
attached xml file contains only that profile, and should go wherever lensfun
profiles live on your system (~/.local/share/lensfun on linux, and I believe
darktable/lensfun on Windows).

As you've found, the presets on that module don't play nicely with
auto-selection... if that module ever gets some love from developers, that
might be something that could be improved. :)

[darktable-user] lens correction presets/styles when using zoom lenses

2019-02-22 Thread Florian Pressler
Hello,

I have a question that seems to have been covered already a few times on
this list. But actually, still after much reading and experimenting, I
cannot bring this to work properly.

The situation: I would like to automatically apply lens correction to my
pictures taken with a certain zoom lens (Sony, FE 24-105mm F4 G OSS). The
lens is being automatically recognized by darktable and set when activating
the module. The camera is *not* automatically detected, as it's a quite new
model (Sony, Alpha 7 III) and not yet in the database. It doesn't matter to
me, I can select its predecessor (Sony, Alpha 7 II), which works equally
fine.

One tool to use for that are module-presets. If I create a preset where I
just have set the camera model (I didn't touch any other setting) and apply
it to other pictures, the focal length is also saved in the preset and
(often incorrectly) copied over to the new pictures. So this is not a
solution, as I have to manually select the correct focal length for any
picture! In my tests, it didn't matter whether I auto-applied this preset
upon importing or if I applied it manually.

The other tool to achieve the goal are styles. Here I try again - turn on
lens correction. I don't touch any setting, except I set the camera. I save
the style. As soon as I apply the style to other pictures, the (wrong)
focal length is also set.

The only workaround-solution which comes up to my mind is create many
module-presets, each only matching one certain focal-length. And each has
the respective focal-length set correctly. This cannot be, can it? :-)

Any advice very much appreciated,
Florian

If you change the lens I assume that it would be identified as another
version. But ok, you are right that it is not a good idea in general. And
it was not my point anyway.

There is another catch with the lens correction module, related to the way

Yes, this is true, it wont always work. My point was to try to make things
easier to most users and most of the cases, that of course I don't know if
this would be always true. The lens I have tried are identified properly
with brand and model and it works pretty fine.

It should only activate the correction if the lens is properly identified.
I dont know if there would be many 'false posives'. In case that you dont
want the correction applied for a concrete lens you can disable it for
those images, or remove the lens profile if posible. Or directly don't
activate the option "Apply lens correction by default".

In my experience with other software I have it always active and works for
most of my lenses, except one, what means that it works for 99% of the
images and saves time, in my case.
It was just a suggestion, maybe you are right and it is not such a good
idea. I understand also that DT tries to avoid doing things 'behind de
scenes' by default. But maybe could be a compromise that works.

The lens correction module works like almost any other module (exceptions
are modules that are absolutely needed for raw files, like demosaic).

I found the darktable documentation very complete, not only the manual, but
also the other info accessible through the Darktable web site. Presets are
described in section 8.5, btw.

As in most programs, changed automatic presets are only applied to newly
imported items. Good thing too, as (with Darktable) you might want to change
the presets when you change camera (body/brand/lens/...). In your case, say
you decide to change one of your lenses for a newer model, with *different*
distorsion parameters. Do you really want that autoapplied to older images?

There is another catch with the lens correction module, related to the way
lenses are identified. The lens identification in the metadata is based on an
ID value provided by the lens. This value is NOT unique between brands, so a
given value can refer to several lenses. Also, cameras don't necessarily know
all ID values possible (esp. for 3rd party lenses), which means the lens
identification is uncertain.
Then there is the possibility of extender rings, focal multipliers,
converters, ...

Darktable/Lensfun just have no way to figure out which lens you have used
beyond the image metadata...
In my case (mostly 3rd party lenses), I have to specify the lens used 'by
hand', and in most cases distortion correction is just not needed. So I don't
need that module activated by default.

[darktable-user] Lens correction setting

2019-02-21 Thread fht233
Hi, first of all I have to say that it is a great software and I like a
lot.
Regarding the topic, from my point of view as a relative new user I think
that the lens correction topic could be a pain and makes the learning curve
a bit more step. In this case would be very helpful to have for example a
setting somewhere: "Apply lens correction by default", (when posible to
apply).
This setting could be active by default (in my opinion) or not. I dont know
if this would have some negative effect in some cases. I think that other
software and even some cameras do it by default to produce the jpg.
The problem for a new user is that at some point you realize that the lens
correction is not applied to any of your photos (at least it was my case).
Then you click on the module and it works fine, great. But the next thing
you expect is that it is active for all photos by default and not having to
do it explicitily every session.
Here you have to start investigating the documentation and googling, then
you have to understand what are the presets, how to program one, etc. It
works with new photos, great. But then you realize that it doesn't work for
the existing photos, reimporting doesnt help.
Some more googling and you understand that it is because those photos
already had a sidecar and then the preset is not applied, good to know.
Well, all together is a pain and I spent a lot of time for something that
seems very basic.

Maybe it was already discussed or it is not a good idea But I think that a
clear and understable setting would be easier than having to perform all
the investigation and setting up things by yourself when you are not yet
familiar with the software and the terms. Googling and finding 'activate
the setting' would be easier than having to learn to set up the preset by
yourself, IMHO.
It is just an idea trying to help, maybe there are better options or it is
not posible at all.
Thanks!

Hi Tanja,

I have posted this to the list as well so that other readers can follow
the discussion.

The reason behind the older version of the library on your installation
is because you a running latest LTS version from Ubuntu while I am
running Debian Unstable which means the version of my libraries are the
latest versions that are not considered experimental. But since you
have the library installed this is not the reason for your problem.

[darktable-user] lens correction for Canon Powershot G7 X under darktable 2.4.1 and Ubuntu 16.04 LTS

2018-02-08 Thread Tanja Etzelstorfer
Hi all!

I hope this is the correct environment for my question:

When importing the RAW files from my Canon Powershot G7 X (.CR2) they appear strange. It seems the aperture is visible and also some strange cropping/zoom.. I googled a lot and came up with the idea that probably the lens profile is not correct. And really, under darktable 2.4.1 running on Ubuntu, the profile for Canon Powershot G7 X is missing. Under windows and darktable 2.4.1 the profile is there.

How can I import the correct lens profile under Ubuntu?

All help is higly appreciated! :)

Best,

Tanja

[darktable-user] lens correction in darktable 2.4.0rc2

2017-12-22 Thread justa

Hi,

my system:

Intel® Core™ i5-3570K CPU @ 3.40GHz × 4 and a AMD RX560 Radeon MSI 4GB.
Ubuntu Gnome 16.04.3 LTS 64-Bi

The ppa of Dariusz Duma for other tools on the system with darktable
2.4.0rc2 is installed.

I use 2 versions of darktable on two systems:  1- 2.2.5 without opencl
and no additional driver and 2- 2.4.0rc2 with opencl and amdgpu-pro-17.50

the camera I use is a Fuji X-E1 and the standard zoom XF18-55mmF2.8-4 R
LM OIS.

In the first version 2.2.5 I have an automatic lens correction when I
switch the modul on, in the 2.4.0rc2 version nothing happens.

No. That should already do it.
If your lens or camera is not yet supported -> check the lensfun online
database as suggested in this thread.
To update lensfun to use that latest data, use the lensfun-update-data
tool that you might need to install (in OpenSUSE it is in the
lensfun-tools package that you can install with yast or zypper or rpm or
whatever).

sounds like this is how your distro provides the "lensfun-update-data"

luck, download the newest version of the lens database used by lensfun (and
by extension, darktable). If you run the script as root, it will attempt to
install to the system database location, otherwise to your user directory.
Watch the output in the terminal, it will tell you whether things are
working or not. If it works, great! If it doesn't, report back with the

Maybe you don't want to wait around for the next lensfun version to be
packaged, either, so...

Did you try, as suggested by others, to install the "lensfun-tools" package, by
whatever method you normally use for package management? It sounds like this is
how your distro provides the "lensfun-update-data" script. If you then run that
script from a terminal, it *should*, with any luck, download the newest version
of the lens database used by lensfun (and by extension, darktable). If you run
the script as root, it will attempt to install to the system database location,
otherwise to your user directory. Watch the output in the terminal, it will
tell you whether things are working or not. If it works, great! If it doesn't,
report back with the error message.

dt does *not* bundle those correction.
Depending on your lensfun version, lensfun-update-data tool may help you.
Otherwise, bug the lensfun in your distributions bugtracker.

After the "corrections done:" should be shown some combination of "distortion",
"TCA", and "vignetting", or "all" if that's the case. If there's no profile
for the lens, nothing is shown in that field... maybe it would make sense for
"none" to be shown instead, as it is for lenses for which a profile exists, but
when "none" is selected in the dropdown. What lens are you trying to correct?
