My answers will probably be far from complete...but others are welcome to correct my mistakes. 1. is Newt UTF-friendly ? and if it is who is the code maintainer ? and is there a mailing list for it. I could not find any I'm pretty sure it is (UTF friendly), as it perfectly handles japanese, russian, greek (and Arabic, at least when it comes to UTF-8 encoded characters) stuff. The newt package is maintained by Alastair. So, as he is currently away or less active, a NMU may be proposed by the debian-boot team, if needed. 2. is libtextwrap UTF-8 friendly ? Ask maintainer. http://packages.debian.org/libtextwrap 3. Should we have newt lib or should we hack cdebconf/newt.c file ? Most likely we will need to hack newt lib. then were should we start. 4. is there s CVS we need to check changes in and who should we talk to to give them the patches. If Alastair has a CVS for newt, it may be on alioth IMHO, you should first apt-get source newt, hack it down as you need, then propose a patch. I may help in testing it by manually building ISO images with it along with complete Arabic translations. I finally managed to be able to build hand-crafted ISO images. In Järjestelmän uudelleenkäynnistys (system reboot), I am advised about a custom boot floppy. Since I was never offered creating one, it sound strange and confusing. After reboot, Starting MTA takes a long time. There were some error messages about keymaps, but they went by too quickly to be read. I am asked about my keyboard again (should reuse the pre-reboot choice), I get the error message again, and I later discover I still have the US keyboard layout although I chose Finnish (and it worked pre-reboot). I am asked about my timezone. Could reuse the pre-boot locale choices? Helsinki is filed under Intian valtameri, not Europe (and Europe lists eg Adelaide). After creating the user, I get the menu. I try to manually select setting up apt, but I get the following message: /usr/sbn/base-config:: line 138: ./menu/n: tiedostoa tai hakemistoa ei ole (that's no such file or directory). I log in at another VC, run apt-get update and then try selecting the next menu option, select packages to install or some such. The installer appears to freeze and I lose my patience; I type shutdown -h now in the other VC, and during shutdown, I see the installer was not frozen, but I no longer could abort shutdown. I stopped here and went to bed. Hi, at first thanks for all your fine work at d-i. I never installed a Debian box so easy and so fast as with http://gluck.debian.org/cdimage/testing/netinst/i386/daily/sarge-i386-businesscard.iso (downloaded today size = 38535168 time = 2004-01-11 23:17). I tried the German installation and I think I found only one not yet translated screen - so thanks to all the translators as well. Only some minor issues could be solved better: 1. I selected testing as distribution. In this case it makes no sense to include security.debian.org into source.list. I would include a check here whether the distribution is stable and if not security should be left out here. 2. A more serious problem is that the keymap was not set correctly. I verified this by dpkg-reconfigure console-data (selected: qwertz / German / Standard / latin1 - no dead keys) and got the following stderr output: Looking for keymap to install: de-latin1-nodeadkeys KDGKBENT at index 128 in table 0: Invalid argument Failed to dump keymap! This might be because your console cannot be opened. Perhaps you don't have video card, are connected via the serial console or ssh. Not loading keymap! This is a real bug which should be fixed. The same here. At the first boot this error message also shows up very quickly, but then the next dialog (whiptail) screen covers the error. So I'm actually not sure if it is the exact same error. However, I believe that /var/log/base-config.log is a transcript of this and there I have this error. Other packages in Debian don't do anything to check for this. I generally do a sparc32 /bin/bash do make sure everything is detected right. language related bugs
The Text Choose language stays english, even after I changed the language to german. Once I changed to german, I see weird characters in the keyboard-chooser. In the keyboard-layout choser, you can only select german (no-dead-keys), but not the other german format with dead keys. The translation of no-dead-keys into ohne Tottasten is not good. It means without Death-keys. Better would be ohne tote Tasten. The template to select the debconf level is not formatted good, e.g. it displays on the screen -- - niedrig ist für trivial Dinge, die Werte vordefiniert haben, die in den allermeisten Fällen gut funktionieren. -- Better would be: -- - niedrig ist für trivial Dinge, die Werte vordefiniert haben, die in den allermeisten Fällen gut funktionieren. -- 2 Lines instead of 4 ;-) All german entries in the main menus are in a similar grammatical form (somewhat like imperfect). Localizing INSTALLATION-HOWTO and other documents
Hi, A colleague of mine has translated INSTALLATION-HOWTO in Greek. However at the moment, there is no file structure in d-i/doc that allows for multilingual documents apart from the manual (which we have already started translating). What would you think about transferring also these documents in such a file structure (eg, en/ for english, fr/ for french, el/ for greek, etc.). Sparc netboot install failed

I did a make TYPE=netboot in current cvs, and I build a tftpboot.img for a hacked tftpboot.sh ( tilo doesn't work). Then I booted via rarp/tftp. kdb-chooser doesn't work. hw-detect doesn't work very well, it seems that discover is missing. dhcp configuration worked, but net-retriever doesn't work. Problems while commiting changes to base-config CVS (CVS confused ?)
Hello, I've just ran debconf-updatepo in order to update base-config/debian/po/*.po files and did an update to Brazilian Portuguese (pt_BR) translation as I always do. However, this time I got some strange messages while trying to commit these changes to base-config's CVS. Various messages like the one bellow were displayed after the normal messages Checking in debian/po/lan.po : confused about file lang.po -- ignoring where lang is a language code. These messages were displayed for the following language codes : ko, ng, gl, lt, bs, sv, zh_CN, ca, cs, pl, bg, nn, pt, fr and sl. For the others langs, the commit seemed to be fine. Does anyone have an idea about what can be happening ? Debian-installer powerpc status and beta2.
Hello, I just got a report from Jeremie Koenig which was able to boot debian-installer using a -powerpc-small kernel (we needed to add the input core and the keyboard support as builtin, not modules). He will probably do a full install report on debian-boot later on, but this means that it could well be possible that we have support for the beta2 branch on the following tested beta2 arches : - new world pmac (there already). - old world pmac (depending on how the tests go). This one would need some adaptations in the build stuff to build powerpc-small initrd and the floppy target, as well as the miboot stuff. - chrp/pegasos (mostly there, need builtin initrd, and only netboot initrd working for now). Subarches that may work, but where nobody tested are : - chrp and chrp/rs6k. - prep Subarches that will not be beta2 ready : - apus (no idea if some work was done here, probably similar state to amiga/m68k). - 32bit power3 and power4 based boxes. - ppc64. So, Joey, if it is ok with you, powerpc may probably be ready for the beta2 before this weekend, and if beta2 images and CDs can be built on saturday, this would mean one last round of testing on sunday, and a beta2 powerpc release on sunday evening. Some minor d-i problems
Hello, a colleague of mine installed Sarge (netinst ISO image of 2004-01-11). He's a Windows guy and a very good professional GUI design engineer. He used Linux before (SuSE). Here are his comments: 1. In the submenu Configure apt you can choose different methods, such as ftp, http, file system. There are two buttons OK and Cancel. Pressing OK seems to lead to testing the source (right?), but the dialog stays. If you are finished with selecting sources, you have to press Cancel. This is very confusing. My colleague suggests to rename OK to Check source or Test connection and to rename Cancel to Complete or Finish There could be an additional Cancel button to get back to the main menu, but in this case that would be identical in behaviour of the Complete button. 2. OpenOffice has been installed, but he is sure, that he did not select this package. This was annoying (BIG package). 3. GNOME has been installed, but a login from GDM was not possible with the GNOME session, only with KDE. (.../gnome-session or so was missing). Normally I would write a formal installation report or file some bugs in the BTS, but because I didn't the installation myself, I just want to inform d-i hackers. usb-cdrom install failed
Hello: I am trying to install debian into a blade server with a usb-cdrom. I've tried quite hard but I haven't succeed, is possible to intall debian right now in such a machine? I have read a post to this list explaining that it could be but I have not a clear idea. I suspect your friend may have ran into a known bug that brings a user back to the described screen after they have successfully set up an apt source; cancel is indeed one way to get out of that loop. This bug is fixed in unstable. 2. OpenOffice has been installed, but he is sure, that he did not select this package. This was annoying (BIG package). OpenOffice will be installed if you choose the Office task in tasksel. 3. GNOME has been installed, but a login from GDM was not possible with the GNOME session, only with KDE. Strange merge conflicts in d-i/tools/cdrom-detect/debian/po/fi.po
How come d-i/tools/cdrom-detect/debian/po/fi.po is so messed up? I can't make heads or tails of the file due to the numerous strange merge conflicts. It looks like two guite different files have been merged together. KBabel does not want to touch the file, the merge conflict markings confuse it. I tried to fix them but kbabel refuses to save the file while it still has errors. Even the header has two different POT-Creation-Dates, like there really is two teams writing this file. I decided to toss the fi.po and copy templates.pot. I'll copy the translated strings there manually. This is a quite well documented (such as it comes) but unaddressed problem with the Linux kernel. The impact for Debian is described in bug #150779 : http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=150779 Unfortunately it seems that the Carolina problem is just a little bit too obscure to be worked out correctly: googling for it, I find a large bunch of scattered dead-leaving help request threads, and a few unofficial workaround projects. Nevertheless, bug #150779 and all related problems seem to be easily solved, by providing a default PReP kernel with the Carolina patches. (Not only for the installation, but also for the installed system...) This appears to be a boot-floppies kernel variant. 1. Is that correct? 2. I believe that that means that it has no purpose in sarge. Correct? 3. Is it necessary to keep this in 'unstable' for some other reason (such as the reason boot-floppies is still in unstable)? Thanks Joey. d-i manages to install a kernel then, but elilo-installer causes (at least) one of my scsi disks to run down, and report 'Not Ready'. I have two disks, sda (8/0) and sdb (8/16). The errors are on sdb, which I'm not installing to. elilo runs parted /dev/discs/discN/disc print | sed when translating /dev/discs/ paths in to /dev/scsi/ paths. Earlier in the install (partitioning disks) I was able to use parted to print the partition table ok. I havn't seen this problem with the businesscard ISOs, but the most recent I tested so far was 20040108. The ia64 udebs on the netinst CD you used have not been updated since then, so I don't know about this. I'm putting this scsi error problem down to dying hardware. I went back to the 20040108 iso that I'm previously used, and am getting similar (and worse) symptoms, only on one of the two disks. So, I still think ia64 d-i is ok for beta2, assuming initrd-tools gets included on the netinst ISO. No new ISOs generated since 20040111 though. Hello, I just finished a sarge installation on OldWorld pmac, using the woody miboot boot-floppy-hfs.bin and a home-built kernel. I'm now going to try to use this system to get floppy images building for oldworld powermac ASAP, the ultimate goal being to get beta2/ppc support oldworld. My TODO-list for the next days : - add the floppy image type for powerpc to the build directory, using the -small powerpc kernel (the big one won't fit on a floppy.) I guess separate boot floppies will be needed for different subarches ; - produce a quik-installer udeb ; - try to make the commented subarch code in anna come to life, in order to get a suitable bootloader for one's subarch. If anyone has ideas about the above things, please speak now. Install base system Once the hardware and kernel problems were resolved, everything worked quite well, but debootstrap failed beacause libgnutls7 wouldn't configure (depended on libopencdk8, which wasn't installed. I installed sarge.) apt-get -f install fixed the whole thing. I had to manually edit /var/lib/dpkg/status to tag base-installer as configured, since i couldn't force the step to be skipped otherwise. 2. Install boot loader I was (unsurprisingly) proposed yaboot as a bootloader, with no alternatives. But yaboot won't boot oldworld. I tried it nevertheless, to see if yaboot would realize it and warn me, but it complained about having no bootstrap partition. The need for one will need to be over-stressed in the installation manual, as I can imagine the face of someone who realizes he has to restart installation from scratch, while he thought it was finished. I chrooted in /target, manually installed quik, and rebooted. And it worked ! 3. Reboot I couldn't login, although root's pw field in /etc/passwd was empty. You will need to set up a mirror on the local system that at least contains those packages that are needed for the businesscard or netinst cd. - If all else fails, you can take a look at the i386 rules in d-i; you'll find that there are rules there to make a bootable netinst CD image, you could create something similar for sparc for testing purposes. Progeny picax: Replacement for debian-cd
It's been brought to my attention that there's some dissatisfaction with debian-cd within Debian, that some reengineering may need to happen, and that such reengineering may not be able to happen soon. Given that, I thought it would be good to alert Debian to the presence of an alternative. Progeny has had some struggles with debian-cd also. When we started work on Anaconda for Debian, we decided against using debian-cd for it, and begun work on an alternative. The result is called picax (for Progeny Install Creator and Archive eXtractor; if you think the name is horrid, you didn't hear some of the other suggestions). We've been using it to make our Anaconda CDs, and it's worked well for us so far. Picax is written in Python. At its most basic level, it splits apt repositories into parts, either by number of parts or maximum part size. It can write installers to the parts via a modular extension mechanism; the mechanism works to the extent that we have placed all anaconda-specific logic in anaconda and kept it out of picax. It can create source media four ways: separate (completely separate source and binary parts, just like debian-cd), immediate (the last binary media is also the first source media), mixed (each of the media contains all the source for each binary on it), or none. Package ordering is handled via order files, debootstrap, and/or asking the installer for important packages; it is also apt-aware. As far as I can tell, it should be architecture-independent, and even cross-architecture, although this has not been tested. Picax is still very new, and I expect that there will be problems should Debian decide to switch to it. But I expect these problems should be easy to solve. In particular, I've created aptable media for three different Debian-based distributions, and working Anaconda install media for two of those, including sarge. To make picax useful for Debian, a debian-installer module would need to be written. Writing an installer module for picax shouldn't be too difficult; it amounts to a Python module with a particular API, which picax calls at the appropriate times. You can see a working example in anaconda; see http://platform.progeny.com/anaconda for details. I haven't uploaded it yet because it lacked the source features until very recently, but I will be uploading it very soon now that those are done and tested. In the meantime, you can get picax from Progeny's Subversion server: svn checkout svn://svn.progeny.com/anaconda/picax/trunk The package architecture is mature, so you should be able to build packages from the above in the usual way. In none of this do I wish to impugn the good name of Raphael Hertzog or of his creation, which has served Debian well thus far. Nor do I wish to impose my preferred solution upon Debian. It may be that fixing debian-cd is the best course of action for Debian to take. But I think picax could be a very useful replacement, and I wanted to ensure it was considered. Whatever Debian decides, picax fills an important niche at Progeny, and will continue to be useful there. beta 2 and beyond
I've gone ahead and started the beta 2 release process. CD images are in place and I will send out the release announcement once the web site has updated. (Some install media won't appear in sarge until tomorrow's dinstall.) I have to say that this release took longer to get done than I'd hoped. We started out strong, the compromise was unavoidable and was handled as well as can be expected, the string freeze went well, the holiday slowdown was worse than I expected, and then it felt to me as if things trailed off at the end instead of us making a big push to finish the release. I'm going to think about this and try to figure out things that went wrong and how to avoid them, and I'd appreciate any insights anyone might have. Anyway with luck we now have a firm release, available in the sarge distribution, for three architectures, which is an important step along the way to sarge releasing with d-i. In a sense we're not done with beta2 yet, since we have between 1 and 2.5 architectures that are still in positions to possibly be added to the beta in a week or two. (busybox, build/, base-installer, main-menu, anna, etc, etc) Porters who want to keep working on beta2 will need to use the CD images that don't include unstable udebs for testing, and as they fix problems, tell me what udebs include the fix so I[1] can push them into sarge. This may make things a little bit harder for you, which is why I've added the extra week. We can make another announcement once more ports are ready for beta2. There are many things I'm looking forward to seeing in the next release of d-i. Here is my wishlist: - security fixed, 2.4.23 kernel (with SATA support) This should be relatively easy to roll out, I intend to update linux-kernel-di for i386 soon, adding the 2.4.23 kernel while keeping 2.4.22, and transition over to it. This will go into unstable as it meets requirements I. and III. above. - discover 2 I guess all the hard work has been done. IIRC the plan is to upload it with a different name, so we can test installs using it before swtiching overything away from discover 1. If this does not involve renaming the existing discover udeb, it will meet requirement I., and can be uploaded to unstable soon. - partman Likewise, the plan here is to get it into the installer but with a menu item that makes it non-default (like autopartkit) until we're comfortable with it. Since it meets requirement I., it can go in soon. - grub Fairly early in this cycle we need to swtich to grub as the default boot loader on i386, so we can be confident it works before the next release. It might be nice if a few of grub-installer's worst bugs were fixed first though. - XFS Could happen a number of ways, either as an alternate boot on the CDs, or by XFS finally being added to stock 2.4.25/6, or by d-i getting support for 2.6. I'm sure that Steve will come up with something. - 2.6 kernel For some arches at least, possibly not as the default but available as an alternate boot on the CDs. Blocked by discover 2. - better i18n in the second stage We need to work out something in base-config that works as well as d-i does for all our supported languages. Kensi has some ideas, but they are not firm. - improved languagechooser Possibly with country selection split out, but we need to try it that way and see if we like it enough to add the extra question. Hi folks, I had a look at the German translation as well. I booted in expert mode just to see more screens, I went into menus I would normally not use. Ugh, ignore my recent post saying networking wasn't configured after installing from the 20040111 netinst iso. What has actually happened, is that the installed system has a /etc/network/interfaces file containing: cut == auto lo iface lo inet loopback # This entry was created during the Debian installation auto eth0 iface eth0 inet dhcp on. cut == If I run /etc/init.d/netowrking start, I get an error about an option with an empty value on line 7.
