Bug#365623: Undeclared conflicts: pathname conflict at usr/share/man/man4/ipfw.4.gz between freebsd-manpages, ipchains

2006-05-02 Thread LENART Janos

freebsd-manpages maintainer: Do you think it would be possible to
remove that manpage from your package? I do not want our packages
conflict (it does not do the same task), and it would be pointless to
use the alternatives system for manpages. If it's possible, please
remove the manpage from freebsd-manpages. In eighter case, please
reply asap (directly to me too).

The etch release policy states that:

| If two packages cannot be installed together, one must list
| the other in its "Conflicts:" field.

Both freebsd-manpages and ipchains include the pathname
usr/share/man/man4/ipfw.4.gz, but neither of them declare an appropriate
"Conflicts:", which is not allowed.

At least one of these packages must conflict with the other, or the conflicing
files removed.

Oh my God!
I never use octal char constants. I just changed '\x7f' to octal
for keeping the original style. But I thought a leading 0 is necessary.

Sor the correct switch label is:

case '\177':

It works well.

Unfortunately that's not feasible. There's no canonical way to set up a
buildd, and we cannot require buildd admins, testers etc. to preseed
their debconf database just because this particular package needs it.

Unfortunately that's not true: Font generation will fail if you don't
have write permissions.

Personally, I don't think this is much clearer. It also doesn't explain
why the built-in default is different from what is recommended,
especially since a buildd is one of the best situations with respect to
trusting one's users.

Hm, I don't remember such a mechanism. Any of the others?

I can see how "ppc64" benefits from these simple patches,
but not where it harms other architectures.

There is the thing of migrating from unstable to testing
when it is build for all architecture,
but that doesn't apply for archs not yet offical supported.

Please explain the risks of appling the requested patches.

I think it is making another architecture possible,
which makes it worth.

2006-05-02 Thread Mahesh T. Pai
Package: gsm-utils
Version: 1.10-9

the postinst script should be using the
``addgroup --system gsmsms'' command to add entries to /etc/group.

The way it is doing this now prevents addition of new users to the
system once gsm-utils is installed.

This is what happened to me after I tried to add a user after
installing gsm-utils.

Adding new group `barfoo' (1003).

How do you come to the conclusion that there is an incompatibility
between auctex and emacs21, when on your system dselect wants to remove
*both*? What's the list of "further packages" that are going to be
updated?

As I already told you, this is perfectly okay. It's only a warning, it
says that half of the dependencies in that alternative can be satisfied
(texlive-latex-base is only available in experimental at the moment).

> REMOVAL is unnessary! Dependencies are incorrect!

That might well be true, but it doesn't seem to have anything to do with
auctex.

Please send us the full list of packages to be updated, and the output
of

dpkg -l "emacs*" | grep ^ii

Furthermore, you could try "apt-get install emacs21", does that help?
If not, what's the output?

Bug#365704: aircrack: should auto-detect number of processors

2006-05-02 Thread Samuel Thibault
Package: aircrack
Version: 2.3-3
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

aircrack has an option for setting the number of processors. But this
should get autodetected to the value returned by
sysconf(_SC_NPROCESSORCS_ONLN);
(if the _SC_NPROCESSORS_ONLN is available at compile time). The option
could yet be kept for overriding this default.

I would like to install busybox-static on my system.
However, initramfs-tools still depends on the obsolete package
busybox-cvs-static. I therefore ask you to change the dependencies,
so not all users of busybox-ststic need to tweak their apt with the
equivs package to fake the existence of a busybox package.

Thanks for the pointer. I think it will help to some degree, but I'm
rather sceptic about ata_piix PATA support as I've got very bad
experience with it on another (desktop) computer. I believe kernel guys
have very good reasons not to enable it by default.

Bug#353644: Same problem?

2006-05-02 Thread Michael Meskes
I was hit by firefox refusing to change the papersize on an etch system
yesterday. I could change the setting in the printer properties window,
but the change disappeared as soon as I hit print. Needless to say that
I couldn't print on a printer that only accepts A4.

Anyway, I was able to solve this by installing gconf2 on that system. It
seems firefox uses gconf to store this information but on a non-gnome
system gconf2 isn't neccessarily installed.

So I would suggest that firefox depends/recommends/suggests gconf2 to
get rid of this problem.

Hope this helps.

The problem with this is that it's trying to execute the VERSION=... as a
shell command in the target -- and on a line by itself, the result gets lost
immediately, since each line gets passed to a separate subshell. You could
fix this either by moving the VERSION=... outside the target (and removing
the tab), or by doing something like

VERSION=`dpkg-parsechangelog ...`; \

Bug#365339: make number of rotatelogs configurable

2006-05-02 Thread Michelle Konzack
Hello Marc,

Am 2006-04-29 14:18:39, schrieb Marc Haber:

> It is configurable, /etc/cron.daily/sysklogd is a dpkg-conffile.

dpkg-reconfigure sysklogd ???

Are you sure that this works?
Maybe under Etch or Sid, but not in Sarge.

I get under Sarge only

michelle1:/ # dpkg-reconfigure debconf
michelle1:/ # dpkg-reconfigure sysklogd
Stopping system log daemon: syslogd.
Starting system log daemon: syslogd.

With the first call I check, whether I am "control freak" and
with the second i gat not dialog or such...
...only this stop/start.

I have following files in /var/lib/dpkg/info:

-rw-r--r-- 1 89 2005-05-25 20:21 sysklogd.conffiles
-rw-r--r-- 1 737 2006-02-28 23:30 sysklogd.list
-rwxr-xr-x 1 1585 2005-05-25 20:21 sysklogd.postinst

-rwxr-xr-x 1 299 2005-05-25 20:21 sysklogd.prerm

I I can reconfigure sysklogd, then there schould be a
"sysklogd.template" in the package...

Now, in 4.3.0.dfsg.1-14sarge1 it seems to be fixed. in -11 it was not.

Closing not fixed bugs sucks either.

Good luck,

No.

No.

Hint: a dpkg-conffile is something different from a debconf-managed
configuration.

You might want to familiarize yourself with the basic mechanisms of
the distribution you claim to be an expert in using.

You can reconfigure sysklogd by editing /etc/cron.daily/sysklogd.

post-sarge is now, we're already approaching pre-etch, so this should be
fixed real soon now, I guess.

Bug#365716: k3b: unsuccesfull recording and strange messages

2006-05-02 Thread Janusz S. =?UTF-8?Q?Bie=C5=84

Package: k3b
Version: 0.11.20-1
Severity: normal

I wasted several cheap CDs with unsuccesfull recording. More details
in the first attachment.

I had no problem with recording the same data on a CD-RW.

After rebooting and setting explicitely the speed I managed to record
a CD of the same make, but the check failed with the message "Unable
to read ISO9660 file system" or similar (I thought it is logged, so I
didn't write it down).

Even if this is a problem of the quality of used CD, the messages
should be more helpful.

Best regards

Janusz

Bug#347352: gnash build errors

Hi,

Yes, I've noticed that too. As .la files seem to have been removed from latest
xorg, /usr/lib/libXcursor.la doesn't exist anymore (
http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2006/04/msg00346.html ), the current
building system seems to fail. I'll try to fix that ASAP

Thanks,

Hi!

  if [ "${QUIET}" != "t" ]; then echo "nothing found"; fi

Here all find output is sent to /dev/null, and $files is always empty.

I found this error in the following tests:

Description: Real-Time-Linux, a POSIX-compatible hard realtime operating system.
RT-Linux makes it possible to use Linux to control real time applications
like scientific experiments, model railways, or industrial plants.
 .
It is a true hard RTOS. The whole Linux system (kernel and user processes)
runs as the lowest priority thread of the RTLinux kernel, and it is always
 pre-emptible.
 .
Finite State Machine Labs Inc. (FSMLabs) created and maintains RTLinux.
See http://www.rtlinux.org/ or http://www.fsmlabs.com/ for further information.
 .
Since RTLinux is POSIX-compatible, most of the man pages are taken from the
SUSV (The Single UNIX Specification, www.opengroup.org). That documentation
can be downloaded but not redistributed. Therefore, it is not
included in the package, but an installer is supplied.

Bug#365714: emacs21: FTBFS on most architectures, xaw issues.

2006-05-02 Thread Frank Küster
Package: emacs21
Version: 21.4a-1
Severity: serious

Hold on, this is a multistep bugreport which covers a couple of issues
and *might* finally boil down to xaw3dg-dev and/or libxaw.

According to http://buildd.debian.org/build.php?arch=&pkg=emacs21,
building of emacs after the last NMU failed on most architectures. I'm
confused, though, because the NMU was in January according to the
changelog, and makes the package is uninstallable on most architectures.
This is because emacs21-bin-common depends on
emacs21-common=${Source-Version}, and emacs21-common has now the NMU
version number. But this should have shown up much earlier, it's like
as if the NMU was not in fact in the archive the last months.

As to the actual failure, it doesn't look as if it should be related to
the NMU patch, and this is some other strange thing. On i386, it fails
with

i486-linux-gnu-gcc -c -DUSE_LUCID -Demacs -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -DUSE_LUCID -I.
-I/build/buildd/emacs21-21.4a/src -D_BSD_SOURCE -DDEBIAN -g -O2
-DPURESIZE=500 -I../src /build/buildd/emacs21-21.4a/lwlib/lwlib.c
/build/buildd/emacs21-21.4a/lwlib/lwlib.c:52:27: error: X11/Xaw/Paned.h: No
such file or directory
make[5]: *** [lwlib.o] Error 1

Now Paned.h is in libxaw8-dev, which is installed as an indirect
build-dependency. Maybe this has to do with the XOrg transition, the
headers have changed there location:

usr/X11R6/include/X11/Xaw/Paned.h libdevel/libxaw8-dev
usr/include/X11/Xaw/Paned.h x11/libxaw-headers

And maybe the underlying bug is that xaw3dg-dev still depends on
"libxaw8-dev | libxaw7-dev | libxaw6-dev" but should have dropped
libxaw8-dev?

Bug#365718: thoggen: Reproducible crash, pointer problem

2006-05-02 Thread Eugen Dedu
Package: thoggen
Version: 0.4.2-2
Severity: important

Thank you for the previous two resolved bugs.

Now, the last bug :o) on my machine:
I start thoggen, I choose File->OpenFolder, choose the directory, the
title appears in the box, choose Ok, the output file configuration
window appears. Now, I choose 720x480. When I press Ok, the progress
window appears, and a few seconds later, thoggen crashes. Here are
the last lines of the output:

I have executed the program twice, the same error appears, and the

The third time I executed thoggen, another bug appeared, but I create
another bug for this one.

Thanks, I changed the string to use "feature" instead of option, I
think that fits better. I agree that using a tooltip in a menu is not
at all optimal but I think we should use it for now until we find a
better solution (a wizard like interface maybe?).

Thanks,

Re: Douglas Scott 2006-05-02 <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
> Just give me the details on what needs to be done. I build mxv from

Currently, mxv fails to build on Sid because ivtools-dev is
uninstallalable:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
ivtools-dev: Depends: xlibs-dev but it is not installable

The ivtools maintainer is looking for someone to take over the
package since 2002, see http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=164800
where one failed attempt is documented.

So as it looks, ivtools and maybe even ace have to be fixed first.

I was able to reproduce the error, producing a core dump. Here is the

So for some unknown reason, res1 is a NULL pointer. I would be glad if
someone else from the packaging team could help me here. I'm deeply

Unfortunately nobody ever followed up on that. It's even unclear
whether Chris was using XEmacs or emacs.

Could someone with a desktop environment that features fancy things like
"dragging a file to an icon to open it" test whether this problem still
persists?

valgrind shows that the leaking function is fopen(), called from
getprotobyname_r(). It seems that getprotobyname_r() does not check if
it already has /etc/protocols open and always opens a new file
descriptor for it.

Moreover, it is generally a good practise to use A4 as the default, as
most countries in the world are using it, with only one noticeable
exception: the US.
OOo packages are already doing this.

Bug#365613: [pkg-wpa-devel] Bug#365613: wpasupplicant: Upgrading remote system makes it unmaintainable after reboot

2006-05-02 Thread Kel Modderman

Felix Homann wrote:

Justification: breaks the whole system

Please be a bit less dramatic with error descriptions/justifications ;-)

I tried upgrading wpasupplicant from 0.4.7-4 to 0.4.8-4 on a remote system
that is connected to the network via a WPA connection using wpa_supplicant.
The system is a "server only" system: It does not have a video card or
keyboard but is maintained via SSH.

After upgrading everything seemed to work as usual until reboot. After reboot
the system could not connect to the network anymore and was therefore
unmaintainable.

Need more info here please. How was wpasupplicant started on this system?

Reason: /etc/wpa_suplicant.conf was renamed without warning.

Solution: Don't rename /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf on upgrade.

Okay, I can agree with this conclusion, somewhat. We are not supplying a
wpa_supplicant.conf by default any more, but should we really rename a
working, personally maintained conffile?

Please, can you submit a proper bug report using reportbug tool? There's a
lot of version info added when using reportbug which would be useful.

When resubmitting, please, tell me also the kind of account you're
experiencing the problem (imap, pop3, local), the exact steps you're making to
trigger the bug and the output in the console when crashing (you'll need to run
'sylpheed-claws-gtk --debug' in a xterm for this).

I don't see how perl version is relevant here, are you using perl-filter?

Bug#365722: tiff: FTBFS with new X packages: Fails to detect glut

2006-05-02 Thread Daniel Schepler
Package: tiff
Version: 3.8.2-1
Severity: serious

From my pbuilder build log:

...
checking for X... libraries , headers in standard search path
...
checking for OpenGL Utility library... -lGLU
checking for GLUT library... no
configure: creating ./config.status
...
dh_installudev -plibtiff-opengl

cp: cannot stat `./debian/tmp/usr/bin/tiffgt': No such file or directory
dh_install: command returned error code 256
make: *** [binary-install/libtiff-opengl] Error 1

According to config.log, this is happening because it tries to link
against -lXi as well and can't find that. Adding libxi-dev to the
Build-Depends allows the package to build again (but you could possibly also
fix it by removing the -lXi from configure.*).

Bug#365723: please relax xplanet-images' Depends: xplanet

Package: xplanet-images
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

I would like to "Recommends: xplanet-images" in the next release of
ircmarkers so I can use the images there. It would be nice if
xplanet-images would only Recommends: xplanet itself so ircmarkers
users can install the package without xplanet (and more importantly
without the X libraries).

Thanks for considering.

The problem with this is that it's trying to execute the VERSION=... as a
shell command in the target -- and on a line by itself, the result gets lost
immediately, since each line gets passed to a separate subshell. You could

I guess the things are the same if the line is written as either:

sed "s/^[[:space:]]*\(APTZIPVERSION=\).*$$/\1$(VERSION)/"
common.sh

or

sed "s/^[[:space:]]*\(APTZIPVERSION=\).*$$/\1${VERSION}/"

I never understood these sublteties. Any pointers to documentation
that could explain this?

fix this either by moving the VERSION=... outside the target (and removing
the tab), or by doing something like
VERSION=`dpkg-parsechangelog ...`; \
sed "...$$VERSION" common.sh

I guess it wouldn't harm to calculate the VERSION outside of any of
the targets. The makefile doesn't have too many of them ;-)

I will test this as soon I get home this evening and will communicate
the results.
I guess after closing this and testing the md5 sum change (#184354,
revision 38+39 [1]) we could release 0.14. Giacomo?

Well, I don't know which GUI systems are you used to, but in common
applications clicking in active elements usually is very different from
clicking on empty space.

I cannot check now, but if the menu only appears by right-clicking then I
agree it should be also present on the menu options (otherwise would not be
easy to trigger it without a mouse).

So, downgrading the bug to wishlist in the meantime.

Bug#365598: gdm: after upgrade, GTK+ refuses to initialize

2006-05-02 Thread Roderich Schupp

The problem is the line

NEVER_FAILS_root_set_euid_egid (0, 0);

in the "sanitize .ICEauthority ..." block in daemon/slave.c ~line 3500.
Later on (line 3557) only the process's uid is setuid to the user's uid,
while the gid stays unchanged (and hence fails the setgid check in
the first GTK application to be execed, typically gnome-session).

The attached patch fixes it for me.

Bug#327867: apt-move sync downloads *.tar.gz which I already have on CD-ROM

2006-05-02 Thread Richard Betham
Package: apt-move
Version: 4.2.24-1.1

I run debian Sarge, but with some packages upgraded to Etch .
The reason for this upgrade to Etch is so that apt-move sync will download the
source code files.

I attach files of output from the dpkg -l command to show what I have
installed.

As root I gave the following commands:
# aptitude update
# aptitude upgrade
# apt-get update
# apt-move get
# apt-move move
# apt-move packages
# apt-move sync

I want it to down load and mirror the source code of tha packages which I have
installed, EXCEPT FOR what I already have on CD-ROM and elsewhere.
I hoped that it would download the source code of the latest versions of what
I have installed, EXCEPT FOR what I already have on CD-ROM and elsewhere.

What it does is begins to download files including the ones which I already
have.
It takes ages to do it because it tries to download all the relevant *.tar.gz
files. I use ppp dial-up connection.
I do not want it to download the *.orig.tar.gz files, because I already have
them on CD-ROM.
I would like my mirror to hold only the update code, so that it will all fit
onto one CD-ROM.

I attach copies of the configuration files:
/etc/apt/sources.list
/etc/apt-mov.conf

Please advise how I can download the relevant *.dsc and *.diff.gz files,
without also downloading the *.orig.tar.gz .

Thank you for the update to apt-move 4.2.24-1.1 , it seems to download the
latest code now.

Regards
Richard Betham

Yes I was just wondering why you choose to create a native package. The
software seems to be useful for everyone or?
And I just thought it would be better to create a non-native package.
Then we also provide an .orig.tar.gz and a nice .diff.gz to document the
changes.
Why did you create a native package?

> Which other distributions are having difficulty and would you please

Well you can decrease the severity to normal if you want, maybe important is
too high, but i just want to keep the number of native packages to a minimum
and only create them if necessary, but I might be wrong :)

Bug#56176: Documentation bug: This still applies to sarge

2006-05-02 Thread Frank Küster
Hi,

since emacs21 is currently uninstallable on sid, I can't check it there,
but on sarge the error still exists. Note that this is not a
Debian-specific change, but instead some very old X11 change.

Bug#365729: mount fails on unmountable filesystem despite 'noauto'

2006-05-02 Thread Alastair McKinstry
Package: mount
Version: 2.12r-8
Severity: serious

I have an LVM2 partition on a machine that dual-boots into 2.4 and 2.6
(to use certain ISDN drivers). Hence this partition is unusable under
2.4 kernels; I have the following /etc/fstab entry:

/dev/srv_vg/lvol0 /srv/public ext3noauto 0 2

This should cause mount not to attempt to mount it on boot, leaving the
user (root) free to mount. Unfortunately, it does not, and I have to
^D past this failure on boot. This means my machine cannot autoboot
after power-failures, etc.

Bug#365728: RFP: helium - functional programming language and a compiler designed especially for learning Haskell

2006-05-02 Thread Eddy Petrişor

Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: helium
 Version : 1.6
Upstream Author : The Helium team (http://www.cs.uu.nl/helium/contact.html)
* URL : http://www.cs.uu.nl/helium/index.html
* License : Helium is distributed under the GNU General Public License.
Description : functional PL and a compiler designed especially
for learning Haskell

Helium is a functional programming language and a compiler designed
especially for learning Haskell. It is being developed at the Software
Technology group of the Institute of Information and Computing
Sciences of Utrecht University in the Netherlands. Quality of the
error messages has been the main concern both in the choice of the
language features and in the implementation of the compiler. Our goal
is to let students (or anyone) learn functional programming more
quickly and with more fun.

Note: Helium does not support type classes yet. For that reason it is
incompatible with Haskell text books.

The language is a subset of the Haskell language. The essential
features we want to teach are all there: algebraic data types, pattern
matching, higher-order functions, laziness and polymorphism. The most
notable difference with Haskell is the absence of overloading, which
is a mixed blessing. Without overloading many function types are
simpler and thus more specific type errors can be given.

Ok, good point. Perhaps we should leave the wpa_supplicant.conf in
place, so that custom scripts will stind find it. However I think this
is a quite seldom cornercase, and I highly doubt this would satisfy the

Yes. But there is no point having a .diff.gz since I am both Debian

I think you need some general education about Debian and the purpose
of bug severities. Going around filing bugs as `important' without a
good reason is rude.

Now I ask you for an explanation and I'm afraid that your response
doesn't seem coherent. Did you have a reason why this bug is
`important' ? Do you think it's release-critical ?

Have you read the documentation which explains what the various
severities mean ?

You need some general education about copyright notices and copyright
law too it seems.

Bug#361835: watchdog: Problem with the option interface

2006-05-02 Thread Thomas Glanzmann
Hello Frederic,
this part of the watchdog binary opens the file /proc/net/dev and looks
if the byte counter of incomming and extern traffic changes, if it
doesn't it resets the machine. This happened once for me with a sky
networkcard (but I use watchdog only since last night). I guess that my
networkcard driver doesn't increment the byte counter if it reached a
2Gbyte mark or something, but I will track it down. You should monitor
/proc/net/dev as well manually and look out if the counters increment.
Maybe add some debug code.

Debootstrap has a fixed list of packages to install (unless you give
the option to resolve depends) but I guess coreutils is in that list
already. Cdebootstrap resolves depends so it will pick up coreutils
even if it didn't have it in the past. But that is the easy part.

When installing packages get unpacked and configured in a certain
order to bootstrap the system. In cdebootstrap the config gives some
hints what to force first to get dpkg configured and then lets dpkg
handle the rest. That step will fail at first because dpkg won't
configure without coreutils being configured first.

It might be cdebootstrap pulls through that, it is quite resiliant,
but when run with debug this will cause a lot of dpkg messages that
make detecting any other problem much harder.

MfG
Goswin

PS: Don't let that stop you from adding a proper Pre-Depends. Just
contact the (c)debootstrap authors about the change so they can fix it
the same day.
PPS: I guess the CCs did that now. :)

I guess it wouldn't harm to calculate the VERSION outside of any of

Yes, I installed linux-image-2.6.16-1.686

hmm did you check from the shell if udevd is running with ps aux?

Yes, back when I booted 2.6.15 within the shell, from ps aux | grep udev
I got the following:
837 0 656 S < udevd --daemon

try to regnerate your initramfs with latest:
update-initramfs -u

I did: no change, even with initramfs-tool 0.60

thanks for your bug report, unfortunately i can pinpoint from the
give info the cause.

Eventually, it seems this one is a 2.6.15 kernel bug rather than
initramfs-tool's.

Right now, I feel very happy with my new 2.6.16-1.686
As long as it proves itself stable...

Thank you for your help Maks, all the best,

Bug#365733: watchdog: Option ping-count doesn't work and isn't documented

2006-05-02 Thread Thomas Glanzmann
Package: watchdog
Version: 5.2.4-4
Severity: important

Hello everyone,
the option ping-count isn't documented and doesn't work. Per default
watchdog tried three times to ping a host. With the option ping-count it
is supposed to change this number via the configfile. This is important
because my server just rebooted because of this check failed because I
guess 3 times wasn't enough. However the source code has this option in,
but watchdog isn't able to parse the line because it is tested after the
"ping" option and since "ping" is a prefix to "ping-count" it tries to
parse "ping-count" as "ping" and fails. The fix is obvious: First check
for "ping-count" than for "ping", a patch is attached.

Thanks,
Thomas

   Welcome to Debian GNU/Linux etch!

This is a Debian installation CDROM,
   built on 20060421.

The default option is 'install'. For maximum
control, you can use the 'expert' option.

If the system fails to boot at all (the typical
symptom is a white screen which doesn't go away),
use 'install video=ofonly' or 'expert video=ofonly'.

The plain options are for the powerpc family of
processors (from 601 to G4). The *64 options are for
64bit powerpc processors, which include the IBM
   Power3, Power4, Power5, ... boxes, as well as the
Apple G5 boxes. Press the tab key for a list of
options, or type 'help' for help.

If in doubt, just choose 'install', and if that
   doesn't work, try 'install video=ofonly'.

Ok, coming back to the question of the system compiler on hppa for
etch. Assuming that hppa does want to do that:

- is glibc buildable with gcc-4.1 on hppa?
- libstdc++6 would need to conflict with libgcc2, which seems to be
doable, but then rules out g++-3.4 and g++-4.0 as a fallback
  solution, where g++-4.1 fails.
- libgfortran did have a soname change, so nothing needs to be done.
- is libffi hit by the ABI change as well?

Matthias

Bug#365647: Does libc6 2.3.6-7 break Sarge

2006-05-02 Thread Petr Salinger
Hi,

it seems related to #364338, #364516.

There is "LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4" in sarge version of /usr/sbin/mkinitrd.
Could you downgrade your initrd-tools to sarge version
and change it into "LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.1".
Does it help ?

Petr

Bug#365547: manpages-dev should use dpkg-divert to solve conflicting files with glibc-doc

2006-05-02 Thread Torok Edwin
Package: manpages-dev
Version: 2.28-1
Followup-For: Bug #365547

I managed to install manpages-dev by doing this:
dpkg-divert --package manpages-dev --rename /usr/share/man/man3/sem_destroy.3.
dpkg-divert --package manpages-dev --rename
/usr/share/man/man3/sem_getvalue.3.gz
dpkg-divert --package manpages-dev --rename /usr/share/man/man3/sem_init.3.gz
dpkg-divert --package manpages-dev --rename /usr/share/man/man3/sem_post.3.gz
dpkg-divert --package manpages-dev --rename /usr/share/man/man3/sem_wait.3.gz

Would you consider adding those diverts to the package?
If not, should somebody file a bug against glibc-doc to remove those manpages?
Anyway I should be allowed to have _both_ packages installed on my system,
without manually diverting files.

(Are diversion the proper way of solving these file conflicts? Any ideas?)

Thanks,
Edwin

Bug#365735: rsync: performance problem

2006-05-02 Thread Toni Mueller
Package: rsync
Version: 2.6.8-2
Severity: normal

Hello,

I am experiencing a performance problem rsync'ing from one machine to
another in my LAN. The LAN is 100MBit/s Ethernet, idle, and the two
machines are also mostly idle, with rsync + ssh together using less than
15% CPU on the slower machine, and some 3% on average on the faster
(receiving) machine. The drives are U160 or U320 in the sender machine,
and SATA in the other. Therefore, I expect the network to be saturated
by the transfer. But in reality, I get a varying transfer rate between
some 200KB/s and 7MB/s, with some 500KB/s on average (over hours, I'm
trying to transfer some 50 gigs). When I transfer large, already
compressed, files or ISOs, transfer is abysmally slow, and when I
transfer lots of small files, performance soars. I have RSYNC_RSH=ssh on
both ends, and transfer using rsync -av (note: not -u, not -z) in order
to minimize CPU usage. But the drive lights also don't indicate much
activity.

What gives?

And why is transfer over a WAN consistently fast enough to saturate my
WAN link(s), ie, faster than in my LAN (but using different data)?

Best,
--Toni++

PS: Not tagging "minor" because of the impact this problem has for me.
