hi,

both libares-dev and libc-ares-dev ship `/usr/include/ares.h' but do not
conflict or add a diversion, thus fail to be installed on the same environment:

AFAICT, the client might be as buggy as possible, X shouldn't crash, so
that's (or there's also) an X bug.

Bug#451344: fam: Fail to install when /etc/inetd.conf is not present

2007-11-14 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
Hm, it seems I was mistaken. The reason the installation fail is
because of the start-stop-daemon call, not the grep. The grep
complained about the missing /etc/inetd.conf file, but it was not
fatal.

The fatal part was that the call to start-stop-daemon would fail with
"/usr/sbin/famd already running." because a fam program was running
outside the chroot, and thus the call to invoce-rc.d would fail and
the postinst would fail. Please change the init.d script to use a pid
file to track if fam is running or not, to get it to work properly in
a chroot.

Happy hacking,

I see that this is yet another bug of normal priority only.

You would help to fix it if you could provide a minimal html page that
includes the input field/javascript code and allows everyone to
reproduce the problem.

Yes. What do you think happen when a (regular upload's) changelog closes
a bug? That all archs are in sync?

AFAICT, binNMU changelogs are informative and don't close any bugs.

Bug#451344: fam: Fail to install when /etc/inetd.conf is not present

2007-11-14 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

Package: fam
Version: 2.7.0-13
Severity: important

During my test install of the desktop task from sid in a chroot, I
discovered that the fam package fail to install because
/etc/inetd.conf is missing. The reason is that the postinst call
'invoke-rc.d fam start', which in turn call /etc/init.d/fam, which
will fail in this line when /etc/inetd.conf is missing:

  egrep -q "^(sgi_fam|391002)" /etc/inetd.conf && exit 0

Please change the script to handle the fact that /etc/inetd.conf might
not exist.

Setting severity to important, as it is no longer unheard of to
install a Debian system without inetd.

Happy hacking,

Sorry, I may have misunderstood you.and badly explain my point.

What I meant is that it is OK to *mention* this group in either
comments or commented settings.

Of course, as you point, Debian is not ready not have us use this

Well, you did well anyway. Having as many Ubuntu changes as possible
to enter the Debian packages was a concern I had but I didn't put this
in the BTS. I rather launched the discussion about some of them.

Sometimes, the discussion didn't really end and the idea of the
changes stayed in the wild.

So, having your proposed patches will be a good help to decide about
each one by one.

Bug#451338: landscape pdf files print as portrait in xpdf

2007-11-14 Thread deb-xpdf . 9 . iridos

Package: xpdf-reader
Version: 3.02-1.2
Severity: normal

*** Please type your report below this line ***

Landscape pdf files do not print as landscape in xpdf while they do print
correctly in e.g. kpdf. This bug slightly resembles bug #47649 in Ubuntu
(see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kdegraphics/+bug/47649 for
comparison). Both pdf files (the one that printed correctly in that bug
and the one that did not) are printed incorrectly on my system, while both
will print correctly from kpdf and gpdf.

The differences beween Ubuntu-bug #47649 and this one are, that in
Ubuntu-bug #47649, xpdf is the only application printing the documment
correctly while (as far as I determined) here xpdf

is the only application that prints the document incorrectly.

The other difference is, that with the current xpdf package, all landscape
files seem to print incorrectly (I did not find examples that did not)

Maybe an underlying bug in the printing was fixed in Debian, but xpdf
still turns the documents on its own accord?

Karsten

Of course I was right to report ;-). It was explicitly requested that I
do so in the release notes (or possibly on the netinst download screen).

On the other hand, maybe I did uncover a bug in the installer. Keep
reading...

Hi Jim, I just noticed that 1 GB was in the report. My system--once
installed--has always reported 2 GB. The question is: why did only 1 GB
appear in the report?

That sounds like a reasonable explanation. I'll pass that on to some
other folks on debian-user that had the same issue.

Hmmm, I recall entering my language and locale at the beginning of the
installation. Perhaps the installer should have set LC_ALL to
en_US.UTF-8, in which case libpaper1 would have defaulted to letter
instead of A4. Maybe this *is* a bug in the installer?

On the other hand, I wouldn't mind if the US switched to A4 :-). And the
metric system. I can dream.

Thanks for the feedback!

Bug#451266: [Pkg-alsa-devel] Bug#451266: new results

Add the following in your sources.list:
deb ftp.pt.debian.org unstable main

As root:
#apt-get update
#apt-get install -t sid alsa-base alsa-utils libasound2 linux-sound-base

This will complete install 1.0.15, which runs very stable and
bugless since 2 weeks ;)

If you want to give the 1.0.15 drivers a try, add alsa-source to the
install list and compile your card.

Check sound again and lest us know the results.

Bug#451336: postgresql-8.3: ossp-uuid support not configured

2007-11-14 Thread Ben Finney
Package: postgresql-8.3
Version: 8.3~beta2
Severity: normal

PostgreSQL 8.3 contains support for a UUID data type
http://www.postgresql.org/docs/8.3/static/datatype-uuid.html>.
This is only enabled with the '--with-ossp-uuid' option to the
'configure' script, which is not enabled by default.

The Debian package of postgresql (8.3~beta2) currently does not enable
this option, so the documented UUID features in the server and the
contrib package will not be enabled.

Sorry it took me so long to get back to. You a quick glance at the code,
this is most likely an xserver driver problem rather than a kernel problem.
I'll double check to make sure, but I think the bug probably should remain
here for now, possibly being forwarded upstream. Michel probably has a lot
more insight to this bug than anyone else though.

Agreed on this as the option is deprecated (I think that a warning is
logged at startup).

Bug#451332: kmail: Cut and Paste buffer contents end up in message

2007-11-14 Thread Gordon Haverland
Package: kmail
Version: 4:3.5.8-1
Severity: normal

For a month or two now, I have noticed that if the active window I have
in my xserver is a kmail message, and I switch out of GUI to a text
console and then back to the GUI, the contents of my cut and paste
buffer end up being pasted in my email message. This gets to be
annoying after a while.

I agree with you.

May be we could improve the error message if the samba daemons cannot be
started or use testparm to check the configuration before starting the
daemons.

I'm no longer at the lab in Duesseldorf but I could certainly continue to
work on it. The additions I put in to accomodate the use in Duesseldorf
should perhaps stay in, even though those guys mostly switched to bioperl
these days.

Not at all - I had pertty much forgotten about readseq.

I believe there really is no upstream activity anymore. Patches for
supporting other packages is just what I did to it anyway, so keep
adding more (making sure it keeps working for the old test cases).

I had tried to get one of the bioinformatics guys involved as maintainer
with no success. If it comes to the worst, they will know who to blame.

Bug#451334: metapixel: Poor failure on missing directory

2007-11-14 Thread David Liontooth
Package: metapixel
Version: 1.0.2-5
Severity: minor

If metapixel is asked to write a file to a directory that doesn't exist, an
error in rwpng.c is triggered. In my case, the directory test3 does not exist:

metapixel --metapixel test3.jpg /mnt/xing2/photomosaics/test3/test3-90-10.png
-w 10 -h 10 --library /mnt/xing2/photomosaics/tiles -a 90

metapixel: rwpng.c:143: open_png_file_writing: Assertion `data->file != 0'
failed.
Aborted

This is surely an upstream issue, not Debian's fault -- let me know if you want
me to bugreport directly.

Aside from this, the program is fantastic -- thanks for packaging!

Bug#451331: Lilo not run, couldn't reboot

2007-11-14 Thread jidanni
X-Debbugs-No-Ack: please
Package: linux-image-2.6.22-3-686
Version: 2.6.22-6

Sorry if here we go again.

Upon upgrade to linux-image-2.6.22-3-686 I was told that as I am
installing a version of a running kernel, I should reboot soon, but
not now. So I waited for installation to complete, and rebooted, only
to be greeted by a lilo message "...kernel is big, overlaps lilo's
second stage".

The user is now locked out of his computer.

Unless he pulls the power cord and chooses an older kernel he has
wisely left in the lilo menu.

Then he can run lilo. And reboot. And choose linux-image-2.6.22-3-686
and all is well.

So why was lilo not run at the time I was given the message to reboot
soon? I don't know.

$ cat /etc/kernel-img.conf
# Do not create symbolic links in /
#do_symlinks = Yes
#jidanni:
do_symlinks = No
do_initrd = Yes
do_bootloader = Yes

Am I missing some parameter? Why do I need to mess with this file?
Who knows? One cannot find any info in /usr/share/doc/linux-imag*
And
$ dlocate /etc/kernel-img.conf
shows nobody owns it. Maybe it doesn't matter and is just cruft on my
system... well I did look in /var/lib/dpkg/info/linux* and found its
name... but all that is doing more digging than a user should. It
should all be mentioned in /usr/share/doc/linux-imag* and
/etc/kernel-img.conf should be listed by some program.

Yes you told me the answer before and yes I adjusted accordingly.
But as you don't document anything, one cannot find the answer so here
we go again. Whatever you told me last time didn't help.
Please put official instructions somewhere.

Maybe a broken partition table or file system on the usb drive.
Could you examine the partition table (e.g. with cfdisk) and if
necessary repartition/reformat the drive?

amixer is part of the package alsa-utils. You can check wether it's
installed by

$ dpkg -l | grep alsa-utils

Check wether amixer is existent by

$ which amixer

Please report the result.

Hi Sebastian,

I compiled hal with the --enable-acpi-toshiba option which should
forward the ACPI events. Could you please test the packages at [1] and
let me know if that solves your problem.

This will leave a file named '$backup.tar.' in the case that both of those
compressors are missing, I think. Otherwise, it seems reasonable. I'll
look at merging it in shortly.

Bug#407899: iceweasel: should not open new window lanching external helpers for links

yep, going to switch some account to 2.x, so just checked ... yes, now
if a doc type is explicitly set to be handled by an external helper, IW
won't open another tab/window.

It still happens, if the helper is called via plugin eg mozplugger, though
I think here the point might be how the plugin talks to the browser - ie
might be a mozplugger bug; not sure/cannot dig deeper.

So, as long as I (can) override mozplugger (or just disable mozplugger
altogether), it works now.

Bug#451328: 'apt-key add' doesn't ignore time conflicts, although update does

2007-11-14 Thread Colin Watson
Package: apt
Version: 0.7.6
Severity: normal

apt-key uses --ignore-time-conflict in 'apt-key update', but not in
'apt-key add'. This is annoying because it means that if the system
clock is skewed backwards before the key's creation time then telling
d-i to use a custom signed repository doesn't work. Do you think apt-key
could be consistent here and use --ignore-time-conflict for add as well?

I don't really think this bug belongs to hal.
It's rather nautilus/gnome-vfs2 which filters out certain mount points
(like e.g. /) and this list is, what the OP asked for.

Are you ok if the bug is reassigned to nautilus again?

Hmm, it's my understanding that setting "msdfs proxy = no" breaks the use of
such a share, but would not prevent smbd from starting. So that doesn't
explain the observed behavior.

I mean, I certainly accept that there are ways that samba can be
misconfigured such that it will fail to start, I just don't think ignoring
restart failures is a good way to handle this.

The samba package stops the daemons in the prerm, so the damage is already
done by the time you reach the postinst if the server was running
previously. Also, per the smbd manpage's confirmation of my memory, smbd
dynamically rereads its configuration when it's changed, so you can
completely break smbd without touching /etc/init.d/samba... :)

Right - unless you have a better way, I think the package state is the way

Bug#451327: iceweasel: a running FF/IW steals new local and remote FF/IW instances

2007-11-14 Thread Paolo
Package: iceweasel
Version: N/A
Severity: grave

Seems that at some point, Mozilla has introduced a 'feature' that fixed the
'another instance of ... already running' issue, so that if you start another
instance of FF it won't complain, but simply it'd open another window of the
already running instance.
So far so good.
The bad news is that this happens with FF launched on a remote system as well,
which is *not* what's supposed to happen.
Here's a scenario:

L. local system: Sarge - stock FF1.5.0.12, FF2.0.0.8, SM1.1.5, Debian's FF.
R. remote system: Etch - same as above, except Debian's FF->IW .

1. On L, ssh -X into R
2.1. On L, start FF - any version
3.1  On R, start FF - any version: the window comes up surprisingly fast;
problem is, that's just another window of the locally running FF! ie
if FF1.5 is running on L, then 'iceweasel' on R opens FF1.5 again.

The converse is also true:

2.2 On R, start IW (or FF/SM)
3.2 On L, start FF (or SM): what you get is another window of the remote
IW/FF/SM.

FF/SM fails to check if the running instance on current $DISPLAY belong to
same host+binary it's being started from.
This has some obvious, and perhaps some not so obvious, security issues.

Bug#451191: Patch appears to be wrong

2007-11-14 Thread dAniel hAhler
Apparently the patch is completely wrong: it turns out that there's
no /dev/bus/usb/devices file by default - at least in Ubuntu.

It is part of the "Magic to make /proc/bus/usb work" (which is now commented
by default in Ubuntu's /etc/init.d/mountdevsubfs.sh).

The patch might be more difficult, because there does not appear to be an
equivalent of the "devices" file in /dev/bus/usb.

The Ubuntu bug is at https://launchpad.net/bugs/156085

Bug#429177: I will upload this for you

2007-11-14 Thread Micah Anderson

Due to the security nature of this fix (resolves 3 CVEs), I am going to
upload this to the archive for you. I've changed the severity to high
and will upload the package immediately, please use severity 'high' on
all future security uploads.

In the future its probably best if there is a security issue in the
package to ask someone in the debian testing team to sponsor your upload
if you cannot.

Actually, Lenny *does* matter in terms of security, that is the whole
point of the testing security team.

Bug#451326: linux-image-2.6.18-5-686: Lock-ups accessing drives with Promise SX8 S-ATA card

2007-11-14 Thread Arcady Genkin
Package: linux-image-2.6.18-5-686
Version: 2.6.18.dfsg.1-13etch4
Severity: important

We are experiencing completely reproducible problems accessing S-ATA
drives, connected to one or more Promise SX8 S-ATA controllers. The
controller is recognized by the default Debian kernel, and the attached
drives appear as the devices under /dev/sx8/. When we create a
reasonably high load concurrently for more than one drive (such as
running two simultaneous "mkfs" processes), the processes lock up
indefinitely, and the load average starts climbing to approximately 2xN,
where N is the number of disks, accessed simultaneously. After such
lock-up, the drives are completely inaccessible.

The problem can be reproduced with one or two cards on the same system.
We have three SX8 controllers altogether, and two identical motherboards,
and the problem can be reproduced with all combinations of these. We don't
pass any boot-time kernel options to the SX8 driver, and we have tagged
commands disabled in the firmware configuration. The SX8 cards are the
only add-on cards on the system.

We found a work around for ourselves: we noted that, if we boot with a
Knoppix 5.0.1 CD-ROM, the above problem does not appear. So we compiled
a custom kernel (2.6.23.1 from kernel.org), using the .config file from
the kernel that's on Knoppix 5.0.1 CD. This worked: the problem cannot
be reproduced with that kernel on the same system.

We would very much prefer to use the stock Debian kernel, though.

The Promise SX8 cards we are using have been updated to the latest
firmware. The motherboard is the SuperMicro PDSME, also flashed to the
latest BIOS. Here are product information pages:
http://www.promise.com/product/product_detail_eng.asp?product_id=125
http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/PD/E7230/PDSME.cfm

I'll paste the output of lspci and a snippet of `dmesg' in the end of
this report.

For your information, I found this open CentOS bug report:
  http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=2355
This looks exactly like the problem we are experiencing.

p.s. I am not sure whether I can attach the working kernel configuration
file to this message: I'm using the reportbug command and so far it has
not offered to attach a file. Should I just paste it in?

Bug#451324: Sudo closes every possible fd from 3 to the upper limit

2007-11-14 Thread Quentin Godfroy
Package: sudo
Version: 1.6.9p6-1

On a setup where the limit for open files is set to 1048576, sudo takes half
a second to do the simplest task. The reason behind this is that at startup
it closes all fds after the one associated with stderr, which makes 1048573
system calls.

There is code in sudo which looks for open fds in /dev/fd/, but the
configure fails to detect that the libc has dirfd, and so sudo uses the dumb
algorithm.

Configure tries to compile this code,

#include
#include
int
main ()
{
DIR d; (void)dirfd(&d);
  ;
  return 0;
}

which fails because the glibc (at least in 2.6.1-1+b1) includes do not
expose the structure of a DIR * (and there seems no reason to do so)

I suggest the following patch be applied. (autoconf has to be rerun after
this)

I think the use case would be that the user broke the configuration
file. For example, there is a recurring bug on Kubuntu where the kde
network administration tool inserts a broken entry in smb.conf (it adds
a "dfs proxy = no" line for each share it defines).

It's true that the problem is not the samba package itself, but the idea
is to make the post installation script more robust to
mis-configuration (in the same vein as don't restart apache if the
configuration is broken).

No.

Yes that's probably true. Again my aim was to make the package more
robust to mis-configuration. OTOH if the configuration is broken we need
a way to tell the user that there is a problem.

Bug#451318: bluez-utils: Can't get BCM2045 up and running

2007-11-14 Thread R. Lemos
Package: bluez-utils
Version: 3.13-1
Severity: normal

I have a Dell Inspiron 9400 (E1705) with integrated Bluetooth device.
It's a Broadcom BCM2045.

I'm using the hci_usb module, which happily recognizes the device and
makes the interface hci0 available.

On module install I get the following message (as seen through dmesg):

Bluetooth: HCI USB driver ver 2.9
usbcore: registered new interface driver hci_usb
hci_usb_intr_rx_submit: hci0 intr rx submit failed urb f75b4ad4 err -28

Afterwards, hciconfig -a shows:

  hci0: Type: USB
BD Address: 00:00:00:00:00:00 ACL MTU: 0:0 SCO MTU: 0:0
  DOWN
  RX bytes:0 acl:0 sco:0 events:0 errors:0
  TX bytes:0 acl:0 sco:0 commands:0
  errors:0

(notice the DOWN state)

Trying to bring the interface up (hciconfig hci0 up) gives (directly in
the terminal, as output of hciconfig):

  Can't init device hci0: Input/output error (5)

And also gives (indirectly, via kernel ring buffer):

hci_usb_intr_rx_submit: hci0 intr rx submit failed urb f75c87d4 err
  -28

The device is enabled in BIOS.

The Bluetooth LED is lit.

Hitting the Dell hotkey (Fn+F2) to disable Bluetooth devices does
actually notifies the kernel about device disconection (dmesg output):

usb 5-1.4: USB disconnect, address 4
usb 5-1.4.1: USB disconnect, address 5
usb 5-1.4.2: USB disconnect, address 6
usb 5-1.4.3: USB disconnect, address 7

And hciconfig -a now shows nothing.

Hitting the hotkey again to re-enable it (dmesg output):

usb 5-1.4: new full speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 8
usb 5-1.4: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
  hub 5-1.4:1.0: USB hub found

Bug#451321: adduser: deluser should not rewrite backup files

2007-11-14 Thread Kris Kvilekval
Package: adduser
Version: 3.105
Severity: minor
Tags: patch

The original backup code in deluser first writes the tar file, and then
compresses it.
This patch simply uses some gnu tar options (already required) to accomplish
the same. This is useful when backup up over NFS.

Bug#451320: aptitude: Prefers to remove instead of hold in upgrade in visual mode

2007-11-14 Thread Felipe Sateler
Package: aptitude
Version: 0.4.6.1-1.1
Severity: normal

In visual mode, when selecting upgrade (with the U key), and a package
upgrade breaks others, aptitude prefers to remove the broken ones
instead of holding the upgrade of the responsible packages. Example that
happened right now: Upgrading apt breaks packagesearch, but instead of
suggesting holding apt, it chooses to remove packagesearch.

Bug#451319: openvpn: Add hint to README.Debian

2007-11-14 Thread Thomas Reifferscheid
Package: openvpn
Version: 2.0.9-8
Severity: wishlist

Please add this text to the README.Debian.gz file.
Patch is/should be attached to this bugreport:

Using resolvconf

Have a look at the shell script /etc/openvpn/update-resolv-conf
It parses DHCP options from openvpn to update /etc/resolv.conf
To use set as 'up' and 'down' script in your openvpn *.conf:

up /etc/openvpn/update-resolv-conf
down /etc/openvpn/update-resolv-conf

You will need to install resolvconf package.

Kind regards

Bug#451314: libpam-ldap: suggested account configuration does not work

2007-11-14 Thread Ferenc Wagner
Package: libpam-ldap
Version: 180-1.7
Severity: normal

Hi,

Some context to this problem can be fount at
http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2004/09/msg01612.html

I configured pam_groupdn in /etc/pam_ldap.conf, and assumed
that the following warning in README.Debian:

- If you want to use the "pam_check_host_attr" feature, make sure
"pam_unix.so" doesn't provide a valid "account" via the Name Service
Switch (NSS), which overrides your LDAP configuration. Don't use "ldap"
for "shadow" in /etc/nsswitch.conf, just use "shadow: files". For PAM,
use something like the following:
# Try local /etc/shadow first and skip LDAP on success
account [success=1 default=ignore] pam_unix.so
account required pam_ldap.so
account required pam_permit.so

also concerns this situation. Indeed, pam_unix provides an "account"
for each LDAP user, since the _unix_shadowed() function in
http://pam.cvs.sourceforge.net/pam/Linux-PAM/modules/pam_unix/support.c
returns false for LDAP accounts via libnss_ldap, even though I set up
"shadow: files" only (when invoked from pam_unix_acct.c).

On the other hand, "getent shadow " returns nothing exiting
with status 2. Still, as "getent passwd " gives "*" as the
password, not "x" as it happens for shadowed accounts, the account is
considered valid.

I'm not sure whether it's a documentation or a programming error, but
I hope the latter, as the current behaviour makes the PAM configuration
unnecessarily convoluted. Also, it may behave correctly (ie. as
documented above) for pam_check_host_attr, which I don't use. But the
suggested workaround doesn't work for sure. In that case this bug is
a minor documentation bug only, plus a strong wish for a more intuitive
behaviour.

Thanks,
Feri.

Bug#451315: x11-xserver-utils: [xset] cant set the acceleration parameters of second mouse

2007-11-14 Thread Nahuel Greco
Package: x11-xserver-utils
Version: 7.3+1
Severity: normal

This was tested on a laptop whose main pointer device is a touchpad. When
you plug an USB mouse, you can't set the acceleration parameters for it,
because all the mouse acceleration parameters that you set using xset will
change
only the touchpad behaviour. xset needs a way to specify which pointer device
you are referring to, so making possible to change the parameters of _all_ the
pointer devices, _independently_.

This doesn't look like correct behavior to me. Conceptually, I don't
believe that packages should declare themselves to be "configured" when
their config is left in a detectably broken state; I think this should be
handled through the packaging system itself rather than having the packaging
system declare the package "ok" and leave the admin to detect the problem
out of band.

Yes, it can be a problem for apt when packages fail to configure; but why is
the samba package's configuration broken in the first place?

The argument given in the Ubuntu bug report, that "we are not following the
packaging policy when the postinst assumes that we should have a correct
config file from another package", is false; samba and samba-common are
cooperating packages, and one of the main purposes of the samba-common
package is to manage the smb.conf file on behalf of samba. But of course
samba-common doesn't contain enough information to ascertain for itself that
the config on disk is usable by smbd, so it's up to the samba package to
complain when this is not the case.

Do you disagree with this position?

I would in any case be interested to know for sure why the original bug
submitter had an smbd that wouldn't start; the follow-up from Mantas is
fairly speculative about the cause of the failure, it's entirely possible
that this change has only papered over whatever the original submitter's
problem was.

Mike, did you have a look at this? Those run-scripts are really out of

Bug#451266: Reporting results of the asked experiments

2007-11-14 Thread Alter Ego

Hi Elimar
Thanks for your reply.

I have tried what you suggested:

rm /var/lib/alsa/asound.state
/etc/init.d/alsa-utils restart

Results:

"Shutting down ALSA...amixer: Invalid command!
amixer: Invalid command!
done.
Setting up ALSA...done."

After doing this the system volume sound remains almost inaudible.

By inaudible I mean a very low sound volume, but on the alsamixer scale
the master volume is Zero.

Also on system shutting down I can see the following error message:

"Shutting down ALSA...amixer: Invalid command!
amixer: Invalid command!"

I have two almost exact installations of Debian Lenny on the some hard
drive.
On the other installation (let us call it installation B) I did not run
the above-mentioned safe-upgrade (which upgraded alsa-base). On
installation B the system sound volume remains normal.

I tried to report this bug with the "Bug Report Tool", but when I
started the apllication I got this error message:

"Either --appname or --package arguments are required."

From now on I will report any bugs with the tool "reportbug"

Greetings,
JJCale

Bug#408219: ntpd giving up on eth0 before it is initialized

2007-11-14 Thread Hugo Graumann
Hello.

I am wondering if the problem is just that the script
/etc/dhcp3/dhclient-enter-hooks.d/ntp is in the wrong
place. It should really be in the dhclient-exit-hooks.d
directory so that the script is run after dhcp has
completed initialization of the network instead of before.
Making this change seems to work over here. When I run
the command ifdown eth0 ; ifup eth0
ntp now restarts and sees its peers as reachable and
then begins to run correctly.

I'm not the one that generates the error, it's pdnsd-ctl that does.
That's why I have to explicitely redirect its output to /dev/null _only_
when I know it's supposed to fail, which happens only at boot when
resolvconf is configured and pdnsd is not started yet. I just don't know
how to know I'm in this case reliably. that's all :)

Are you saying that you're ok with it for Samba in Debian, or in Ubuntu?

I really don't think it's appropriate to use in Debian. The admin group is
historically not created by Debian's installer or base-files, so if it
exists at all on older Debian systems it's because of action taken by the
local administrator. The resulting group may have completely different
semantics than it does on Ubuntu, and using it as a template for the
sambashares group may result in giving share privileges to users who aren't
anything even remotely like local administrators.

The admin group in Ubuntu works because by default, everyone in group admin
has sudo access and can make changes to the samba config directly (if they
know how). For other meanings of "admin", this represents a privilege
escalation if these users are suddenly allowed to create samba shares.

> Actually, this "admin" thing is maybe something where Ubuntu and
> Debian could converge about, no?

I would like to see that, but think that's a discussion to be had by the
wider Debian community first (debian-boot and/or debian-devel), and before
the "admin" group has established semantics within Debian I don't think we
should be using it for this in Samba.

Cheers,

Bug#391867: went back to old IDE

2007-11-14 Thread Andrew Lindh

I tried kernel 2.6.23 and had the same problems.

System is using AHCI for SATA drives and NCQ. I disabled NCQ and it
got better but the problem did not go away.

I also tried Maxtor 6B300S0 Rev: BANC1E00 with the same results (some
times the Maxtor made it worse and the system was mostly useless).

I did find a drive that worked with NCQ and AHCI, an old 160G SATA disk
WDC WD1600JS-60N Rev: 10.0 It did not seem to cause any errors when
it was alone in the system.

I disabled AHCI in the bios (back to old ICH6 IDE only mode). Now it is
using the ata_piix and the system is happy with all drives again...

That sounds like some sort of interaction between Lesstif/Motif and the
window manager. Once you exit Xpdf, the window manager is responsible
for figuring out which window should have the focus. Maybe something in
the Lesstif combo box implementation is confusing icewm?

(I don't have icewm installed here, so I can't test this one. I don't
see the problem with fvwm2, so I'm just guessing at this point.)

Bug#447172: lirc-modules-source: More information

2007-11-14 Thread Matthew Gabeler-Lee
Package: lirc-modules-source
Version: 0.8.2-1
Followup-For: Bug #447172

I saw this problem too. It looks like it is including the
automake-generated makefile for drivers/Makefile, with no include to get the
kernel build rules. Items in debian/rules and elsewhere indicate that there
were in the past some hacks to temporarly switch makefiles for the kernel
module build, but somehow those have been partially lost, or are no longer
being called.

After much hunting through the package build, I noticed that
drivers/Makefile was missing a ton of lines compared to the upstream
distribution. I also I noticed this in the build output, just after running
configure:

cd .. && /bin/sh ./config.status drivers/Makefile
config.status: creating drivers/Makefile
##

Hmm ... what happens if I install automake-1.6 ... oh, hmm, automake is only
available in sarge!

What if I get the autogen.sh from lirc cvs and use it to recreate configure
and friends with a current automake ...

then applying patch 02_Makefile.in fails.

At any rate, I'm guessing the problem is related to recreating the makefiles
going wrong due to missing automake stuff, or automake running when it
shouldn't.

Bug#451300: could not open socket /var/cache/pdnsd/pdnsd.status

2007-11-14 Thread jidanni
Well, the complexities of the two programs are well beyond me, but
perhaps you could modify the messages to add "... will try again",
"... usually harmless", "first pass negative, now at stage two", etc.

That's because the package uploaded in lenny for security updates has
been based on the package from etch, not taking into account the changes
that occurred in between...

As far as I can tell. I tend to use mostly the GL screensavers (oooh,
shiny) and it's the only one I've seen the behavior in.
