Bug#497349: nvi Increment Command ("#") Erases to End of Line

yep, you're right - the v_increment command is not widechar-capable and
messes up the line. This is an upstream bug, but I've created a fix
myself in the meantime.

Thanks for reporting!

Bug#484147: Announce of the upcoming NMU for the slashem package

2008-08-31 Thread Christian Perrier
Dear maintainer of slashem and Debian translators,

Some days ago, I sent a notice to the maintainer of the slashem Debian
package, mentioning the status of at least one old po-debconf translation
update in the BTS.

I announced the intent to build and possibly upload a non-maintainer upload
for this package in order to fix this long-time pending localization
bug as well as all other pending translations.

The package maintainer agreed for the NMU or did not respond in two
weeks, so I will proceed with the NMU.

The full planned schedule is available at the end of this mail.

The package is currently translated to:
cs de fi fr gl nl pt ru sv vi

Among these, the following translations are incomplete:

If you did any of the, currently incomplete, translations you will get
ANOTHER mail with the translation to update.

Other translators also have the opportunity to create new translations
for this package. Once completed, please send them as a bug report
against the slashem package so I can incorporate them in the build.

The deadline for receiving updates and new translations is Sunday, September
07, 2008. If you
are not in time you can always send your translation to the BTS.

The POT file is attached to this mail.

If the maintainer objects to this process I will immediately abort my NMU
and send him/her all updates I receive.

Otherwise the following will happen (or already has):

Tuesday, August 26, 2008 : send the first intent to NMU notice to
the package maintainer.
Monday, September 01, 2008 : send this notice
Sunday, September 07, 2008 : (midnight) deadline for receiving
translation updates
Monday, September 08, 2008 : build the package and upload it to
DELAYED/2-day
send the NMU patch to the BTS
Wednesday, September 10, 2008 : NMU uploaded to incoming

Thanks for your efforts and time.

Bug#497358: hal-info: wrong quirks for pm-suspend on thinkpad x40

2008-08-31 Thread Daniel Moerner
Package: hal-info
Version: 20080508+git20080601-1
Severity: normal

My Thinkpad X40 will not suspend if I just run pm-suspend as root. It
comes back to a screen without the backlight on--I can fix this by
blindly typing "su root -c 'vbetool post'" and then switching to a
virtual terminal and back to X. This problem is also fixed by calling
"pm-suspend --quirk-s3-bios."

The problem lies in
/usr/share/hal/fdi/information/10freedesktop/20-video-quirk-pm-ibm.fdi

This file has two entries for the Thinkpad X40:

true
true

 true

The problem is that my machine is matching the second rule for an X40,
not the first. If I change the second rule to use the
key="power_management.quirk.s3_bios", then my machine suspends fine.

I have attached lspci -nnvv if you need anything else just ask.

I'm tempted to agree with that argument.

/etc/laptop-mode/conf.d/ethernet.conf uses ethtool to manipulate the wol

laptop-mode-tools that use commands not in the package, like hdparm,
have the package listed as a Recommend of laptop-mode-tools. I think
the same should apply to ethtool. Thanks.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure I can afford the time right now, considering that
it'll be uncertain to make it into Lenny. Would somebody else who is already
familiar with the code in question be able to prepare the patch more quickly?

Are there any preliminary 2.0 packages available that I could test? I need a
solution pretty soon, and installing the upstream binary distribution is not
my favourite option. I'd rather install experimental packages (and maybe
upgrade others) if available.

If I had noticed I would have filed this along with bug #497343. The
configuration-file controller requires killall to function. killall is
in psmisc, which is not priority required, and thus is not installed by
default. Since laptop-mode-tools actually spits out an error message
without killall, I think it might be better for laptop-mode-tools to
depend on psmisc, instead of just recommend it. Thanks.

Bug#497357: debconf: can't restart services in an Emacs shell buffer

2008-08-31 Thread Francesco Potorti`
Package: debconf
Version: 1.5.22
Severity: normal

Every time a package, such as libpam0g, wants to display a list of
services to be restarted in an Emacs shell buffer, the list is empty.

>From inside an Emacs shell buffer, I use to run
aptitude -r dist-upgrade
and I get this:

=== start of screen transcript =
Setting up libpam0g (1.0.1-4+b1) ...
debconf: unable to initialize frontend: Dialog
debconf: (Dialog frontend will not work on a dumb terminal, an emacs shell
buffer, or without a controlling terminal.)
debconf: falling back to frontend: Readline
Checking for services that may need to be restarted...Checking init scripts...
Configuring libpam0g

Most services that use PAM need to be restarted to use modules built for this
new version of libpam. Please
review the following space-separated list of init.d scripts for services to be
restarted now, and correct it
if needed.

Some other services such as xscreensaver, gnome-screensaver, and xlockmore
cannot be restarted for you. You
will not be able to authenticate to these services until you restart them
manually.

Services to restart for PAM library upgrade:

== end of screen transcript

As you can see, the list of services to restart is empty. Howeer, if I
run in a terminal the command
/var/lib/dpkg/info/libpam0g.postinst configure 0

I get the following list: wu-ftpd samba netatalk gdm exim4 cups cron atd

It is not simply a visualisation problem: if I hit Enter at the prompt,
no services are restarted. I can reproduce this problem at will.

I am knwledgeable with bash, so if I can be of any help, please let me
know.

Bug#497304: general: packages cannot be partially installed

Hi,

this sentence in its so-general-form is not true at all.
However it is true that most packages include their documentation,
because most of our users basically are interested in have this
documentation installed and also because splitting documentation into a
seperate package is not always desired (size constraints).

> Each stand alone binary file should be individually packaged, rather

Oh no. You are not really suggesting that, are you? I see what you are
trying to achieve but micro-packages, like you are suggesting, are
really a step in the wrong direction. After all they will enforce other
space problems then those you had before. It will increase the number of
dependencies of a package, the needed space for package lists on every system
and last but not least higher the space required on our mirrors. Not to
mention everything I forgot.

So, it sounds like a bad idea.

Best Regards,
Patrick

Ok, thanks for pointing this out. This is a change that was introduced in
an NMU that I had intended to revert because it's not the standard way of
handling SONAME changes in Debian, even when one of the libraries involved
does not use symbol versioning and symbol conflicts result. I never got
around to reverting it because it seemed to be a lower priority issue in
practice; this, together with bug #495954, makes it clear that it needs to
be a high priority.

I'm not sure that bug #495954 is entirely the fault of this conflict; I
think there's still an issue with how apt or aptitude is ordering packages
during upgrade which is detectably wrong and should be addressed. But that
bug can probably be downgraded as long as this one gets fixed.

Bug#405862: hugin: configured to call autopano.exe, should be autopano

2008-08-31 Thread Hamish
Package: hugin
Version: 0.6.1-1

Regardless of the depends/suggests status of autopano-sift, could the
primary subject of this bug report be addressed please? i.e. a tiny patch
to remove the '.exe' from autopanog default command? Then those using
Christian Marillat's unoffical multimedia package wounldn't have to dig
around in the Preferences menu to find where to change that.

FWIW the workaround is,

File -> Preferences -> Autopano tab -> "Use alternative Autopano-SIFT
program"

or, in the ~/.hugin file edit this line:
[AutoPanoSift]
AutopanoExe=autopanog

thanks,
Hamish

Looking at popcon netmon-applet is still being used by some people.
Also, both netspeed and netstatus are a bit 'heavier' on the UI code,
as netmon-applet uses text-only displaying.

It is true however that upstream seems to have dropped this package,
so on the other hand orphaning it might be a good idea.

Maybe there should be an alternative for this package though, providing
the same clean, text-only display method.

Having had a deeper look into the upstream activity dropping this
package seems like a good idea though. I am going to put this package
in orphaned status again.

Regards,

Stephan

Bug#497354: ALSA: snd_intel8x0 broken on some boots

2008-08-31 Thread clayton
Package: linux-image-2.6.26-1-686
Version: 2.6.26-3
Severity: important

Since I installed 2.6.26 on this machine, I have booted several times,
and twice sound has been unusable. Any music I play, for instance,
sounds like it is playing far in the background against a foreground of
static and crackling. If I bring up kmix there appears to be TWO sound
cards:

* the correct one: Intel 82801CA-ICH3
* pcsp

The "pcsp" entry in kmix has only one channel I can adjust, called
"Master", which does seem to have an effect on sound level.

This part of the syslog seems suggestive:

Bug#497353: Bogus warnings from intltool-update

2008-08-31 Thread Yevgen Muntyan
Package: intltool
Version: 0.40.0-1
Severity: normal

When running intltool-update it prints lots (that is many terminal
screens) of warnings like the following:

line 305, line 147.
Use of uninitialized value in regexp compilation at /usr/bin/intltool-update

and

mismatched quotes at line 41 in ../moo/moopython/codegen/argtypes.py

The latter is about python triple-quoted strings (I believe). I "fix"
the former by removing -w from intltool-update's shebang, and the
latter by commenting out the line that prints it. Both are useless
IMO: I, the intltool user not knowing perl, don't fix intltool; and
mismatched quotes one is just bogus, there aren't mismatched quotes.

cwidget's swsprintf doesn't handle overflows of its initial buffer
correctly at all -- there are at least two bugs in it (one of which
doesn't crash the program only because the other bug means it never
runs). Now that I've tracked it down, it should be pretty easy to fix.

I made that argument and lots of people disagreed with me. I don't think
this is something we can impose with Lintian until you can build consensus
within the project; many people believe this reference to be just fine for
a package that's covered under "or any later version" terms.

If you want to pursue this, the bug should probably be reassigned to
debian-policy, since that's where any specific policy should be
documented.

Lintian already does catch this if there's no copyright statement at all
and I think does as well as is reasonably possible without way too many
false positives.

Since I upgraded xserver-xorg and mesa from unstable to experimental I
get the following error in xorg.log:
(EE) intel(0): underrun on pipe B!

I can find some similar bug reports in the upstream bugzilla but most of
them seems to be fixed now.

Our 2.4.1-1 actually contains upstream 2.4.2, and I am not sure that a
2.4.3 is ever planned. So your only hope might be to try git master, but
I am not sure it can be compiled easily in Debian.

Otherwise, you can go back to <2.4.1-1 (snapshot.debian.net doesn't seem
to contain one of them for Xserver 1.4.99/experimental, so you'll have
to build the intel driver).

Brice

The latest git version from xf86-video-intel still shows the same error on my
system.
I compiled xserver-xorg-video-intel version 2.3.2-2 (unstable) for Xserver
1.4.99 (experimental)
and it works without errors!

Sorry! I was lazy/stupid/whatever enough to not read more about apt and
learn how to do it without adding a field to the cache. So, I am
attaching the patch to the patch for aptitude, which does not need this
other patch to APT. I will close the apt bug after that.

I still like the patch to be reviewed, if you can, please.

It's not true, and I have a general notion what's happening.

Both devel and contrib are affected. The common thread is that their
descriptions in Russian are long -- nearly 900 bytes. If you delete
characters from the long description of "devel", you'll see that the
number and the text following it become valid one character at a time.

It looks to me like something is copying into a fixed-length buffer
and truncating the string. It's not running off the end (or valgrind
would have squawked about that and the strings would probably have
sometimes been correct), but since the string isn't NUL-terminated, we
end up printing a bunch of garbage (whatever's at the end of the
string).

Bug#497349: nvi Increment Command ("#") Erases to End of Line

2008-08-31 Thread David A. Harding
Package: nvi
Version: 1.81.6-3
Severity: important

Withing nvi, placing the cursor over a number and pressing the # plus
#, +, or - should increment or decrement that number, but now it erases
everything from the cursor to the end of the line.

For example, if I place the cursor on top of the number two in the
following line and press ##,

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

nvi should produce,

1 3 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

but instead it produces:

1

Preventing my user .exrc file from being sourced doesn't affect the
problem.

Thanks,

Whoops. It should say something like "Use of the ?bind(x, p) or ?x:p term".
Either that, or just give both forms, e.g.

?for x: ?depends(?depends(?for x: ?bind(x, ?depends(?=z
?for x: ?depends(?depends(?for x: ?x:depends(?=z)))

I think I'll include both forms, since it succinctly makes the point
that they're equivalent.

Indeed, I tried with a clean lenny chroot and the package installs fine
this because libmrss has not being migrated to testing.

Yes, I tried this and I guess that libmrss-abi-9.19.2 depends
is coming from ${shlibs:Depends} var, since rsstail does not explicit
depends on this package, and thus now when libmrss is not providing any more
this package (you can have a look here: #496836) rsstail is not
installable.

Yes, I actually rebuild rsstail and the problem is solved I'll ask a
binNMU for this package and also I will confirm whit libmrss maintainers
if they will ask for an exception.

If you which you can get a fixed package that works good(only for

I've had it in the back of my mind to do this for a while. I just
checked this syntax into the head branch:

pattern(?essential => Essential {section(subdir)}, ?true ||), ...

so you can use any policy to group each sub-part of the pattern
expression. Of course, writing "{}" will give you a flat list of
packages (what you want here).

Bug#497342: nvi No Longer Opens Files with O_NONBLOCK, Causing XTXTBSY Errors

2008-08-31 Thread Jan Christoph Nordholz
Hi David,

> Performing the following steps on the Debian nvi packages 1.79-26 and
> 1.81.6-3 produces different results.

that's strange - I can reproduce it with both versions here. Note
however that the behaviour is different if the file in question was
not executable when the editor opened it (e.g. if it didn't exist
yet). I'm not quite sure why that is, but I'd call it a stdlib glitch,
because the documentation is quite clear on this topic...

From open(2):
] ETXTBSY
] pathname refers to an executable image which is currently
] being executed and write access was requested.

And this works the other way round, too - from execve(2):
] ETXTBSY
] Executable was open for writing by one or more processes.

I.e., as long as nvi has the file itself open for writing (no matter
whether that access is exclusive or not) instead of a backup file,
execve() cannot succeed.

The only way around this would be to make a full copy of the original
file, work on that and atomically copy the changes back on ":w"... but
I don't remember a nvi version that did that.

Regards,

Jan

Bug#497345: laptop-mode-tools should recommend psmisc

2008-08-31 Thread Daniel Moerner
Package: laptop-mode-tools
Version: 1.45-1
Severity: normal

If I had noticed I would have filed this along with bug #497343. The
configuration-file controller requires killall to function. killall is
in psmisc, which is not priority required, and thus is not installed by
default. Since laptop-mode-tools actually spits out an error message
without killall, I think it might be better for laptop-mode-tools to
depend on psmisc, instead of just recommend it. Thanks.

Mmh, i feel you are near to the problem even if...
No, i've not disabled dbus notification neither i've ever tweaked it.
Moreover "notification-daemon" is installed, i can see notification

From my first mail to debian-gtk-gnome (May 2007), i have never seen

I use unstable since 2005: maybe there are some conffile that was not

Bug#497342: nvi No Longer Opens Files with O_NONBLOCK, Causing XTXTBSY Errors

2008-08-31 Thread David A. Harding
Package: nvi
Version: 1.81.6-3
Severity: important

Hi,

Performing the following steps on the Debian nvi packages 1.79-26 and
1.81.6-3 produces different results.

1. echo > mycode ; chmod +x mycode
2. nvi mycode
3. Enter:
 #!/bin/bash

 echo Hello, world.
4. :w
5. ^Z
6. ./mycode

On 1.79-26, mycode prints "Hello, world."

On 1.81.6-3, with a real file, the shell prints:
bash: /home/harding/bin/myxplanet: /bin/bash: bad interpreter: Text file busy

strace shows the following error:

 execve("/home/harding/bin/myxplanet", ["myxplanet"], [/* 32 vars */]) = -1
ETXTBSY (Text file busy)

Running strace on both of the nvi:s, shows the following difference
in the open syscalls.

1.79-26:open("bin/myxplanet", O_RDONLY|O_NONBLOCK) = 3

1.81.6-3: open("bin/myxplanet", O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = 4
...
close(4)= 0
...
open("bin/myxplanet", O_RDWR) = 4
fcntl64(4, F_SETFD, FD_CLOEXEC) = 0

Note: On 1.81.6-3, nvi opens and closes the file and temp file
immediately before opening them for real. I don't know why it does
this, but it uses different options each time.

I've attached both complete straces to this bug report.

Both versions of nvi were tested on the same system, as the same user,
in the same shell, with the same .exrc, and the same file. The only
packages that changed between using the two nvi:s were nvi and nvi-doc.
(nvi-doc was installed when I upgraded to 1.81.6-3.)

Note: both tests were run with "set nolock" in the .exrc; this setting
 didn't affect the problem.

Thanks,

-Dave

2008-08-31 Thread Filipus Klutiero
Package: xkb-data
Version: 1.3-2
Severity: normal

The Customised layouts section of README.Debian is incomplete. To add a
layout, some files in rules also need to be modified (apparently base.lst,
maybe base too). This is the binary equivalent to the "extending $inetkbds
list in rules/base.lists.part". Otherwise, the layout will not be offered by
kcontrol.

Package: aptitude-doc-en

?for x: ?depends(?depends(?for z: ?x:depends(?=z)))

See the section called “Explicit search targets” for more information.

The problem is that
?for x: ?depends(?depends(?for z: ?x:depends(?=z)))
doesn't mention the word "bind" anywhere.

Maybe like the Dalai Lama, its presence pervades, but for the basic
user, without more cushioning explanation, it looks like the wrong
example was pasted.

There is no --purge option to aptitude. If you don't believe me,
consult the table of options in main.cc.

However, getopt_long has a "feature" that treats an abbreviation for
an option as the option itself if it is unambiguous. What you're seeing
is probably that --purge is handled as --purge-unused. I actually wasn't
aware of this, but it should probably be documented in the manpage.

Won't work -- it interacts badly with other aptitude features, like
being able to modify package states from the prompt. Like I said, I'll
need to do this at the point that aptitude first sees that packages have
been removed by a non-aptitude agency (perhaps in cleanup_after_change).
I don't think the command-line action "remove" should be affected, since
aptitude actually has a "purge" action (i.e., by saying "remove" you're
explicitly asking aptitude not to purge that package). But resolver
solutions that you apply should be affected, and unused packages being
deleted should be purged as if Purge-Unused was set.

Bug#497339: gdm: Login disappears when switching user

2008-08-31 Thread Russell Weatherburn
Package: gdm
Version: 2.20.7-1
Severity: grave
Justification: causes non-serious data loss

I'm unsure that this is actually a gdm problem, but it does seem
relevant.

The situation I have found is that I have two users who switch between
VT7 and VT8. Since changing to Lenny, I have found that VT7 appears to
be stable, but the user who logs into VT8 can run the session for a
period of time, however if the users xscreensaver comes on and locks the
screen and the switch user button is clicked the VT8 session will
disappear.

This has the potential to lose data for the second user and, of course,
potential marital disharmony (which I would like to avoid as much as
possible...)

A similar situation I have also seen when using vnc4server, however it
occurred with VT7. VT7 became unusable, however switching users and
using VT10 was possible.

If this bug should be pointed elsewhere, please let me know.

Regards,

Russell.

Bug#497338: reportbug: add tags when submitting more information

2008-08-31 Thread Luca Bruno

Version: 3.99.0
Severity: wishlist

When submitting more information I'd expect sometimes reportbug asks me if I
have a patch.
Instead I have to attach the file then use "control" to add the patch tag.

I've applied this patch to the "head" branch as-is. We might want to
make a few more changes, as I noted in my last mail. Also, what's the
situation for other languages? I guess that at least Chinese suffers
from this problem; I'll Cc the most recent Chinese translators for
aptitude. What about other non-ASCII locales? Korean? Thai? Khmer?
I have no clue.

Would it make sense to always recognize "Yes" (untranslated) as a
fallback? This is a little ugly (since it's not advertised that "yes"
is available), but it would at least let users proceed if they're in
this situation. I think this was suggested in one of the earlier mails
in this thread.

Hm, I prefer using P_() for those messages. I'll commit that on top
of your patch, though.

I noticed that you also found the Essential prompt. Thanks. Sadly,
there's a second version of the string in src/cmdline/cmdline_prompt.cc:

 string prompt=_("I am aware that this is a very bad idea");

Would it be OK if I just used the same translation here as for the
other Essential prompt string? (probably the prompts should be the same
anyway)

Also, I was curious: would it make sense to use a transliteration for
"Yes" and "No" like you did for the Essential prompt? (i.e., "hai" and
whatever "no" translates to)

Thanks,
 Daniel

Sorry about that. I thought it would be useful for users to not have
to enter "Yes"/"No", but it looks like I guessed wrong. :-(

I hope I can get one more i18n-related upload of aptitude in, and I
guess I can fix this in that upload once we decide what to do.

Which one is the latter? I've lost track.

Also, I believe aptitude actually says what it will do if you enter
"Yes", so the user doesn't need to treat it as anything but a magic
string of characters.

Hm, yes_key is actually in cwidget, except that aptitude uses it as
well in the particular case that it's showing a minibuffer-style yes/no
prompt. (which it never does by default) That seems wrong -- probably
all the translation should happen in cwidget and aptitude should call a
function in the library to get the translation.

You mean for the security prompt confirmation, right? I think that
this is the best long-term solution: use different translation keys for
"yes"/"no" when they're being used here. In fact, we could even use
P_() here: P_("Confirm security override|Yes") and
P_("Don't override security|No").

Bug#497337: xserver-xorg: XEvIE XevieStart() hangs on i386

2008-08-31 Thread Thorvald Natvig

Package: xserver-xorg

All calls to XevieStart() hang the client if you're on i386. It works on
amd64, and a statically compiled i386 version will also work on an amd64
machine, so I think this bug is somewhere in the X server.

There's a sample program on

that can be used for testing.

Bug#497335: git-buildpackage: Don't use deprecated command names

2008-08-31 Thread Michael Biebl
Package: git-buildpackage

Severity: important

Hi,

as you can see, I'm using git 1.6 (from experimental).

The usage of git-$command has been deprecated in 1.6, and the binaries are no
longer available in $PATH.
This makes git-buildpackage fail, as it e.g. uses "git-archive" and not
"git archive".

Cheers,
Michael

Sorry, I don't really understand what you would like to change.
In my understanding, the two paragraphs are consistent with the current
(1:4.1.1-4) passwd.

I prefer to describe what -l does, and give additional information to
avoid misread.
If I reverse the two paragraphs, I don't think it will be clearer (there
are a lot of other thinks that passwd -l does not do).

Would you have a proposal?

Thanks in advance,

Bug#497332: linux-image-2.6.26-1-686: Hangs up when restarting network

2008-08-31 Thread Duguet alain
Package: linux-image-2.6.26-1-686
Version: 2.6.26-3
Severity: important

Hi!

When (as root) I "invoke-rc.d networking restart", at the first step my
wireless connexion
stops, and when I invoke it again, the system hangs up and I am unable to do
anything, even with
the "magic keys". The only solution is to press the reset button.
I started again with the previous kernel to check it and I can do this action
without any problem
(I tried it a good number fo times to be sure).
My wireless card is a Ralink one ant it uses the rt61pci module.

Thanks!

Bug#497331: console-setup: Please don't use Terminus by default.

2008-08-31 Thread Josh Triplett
Package: console-setup
Version: 1.27
Severity: normal

console-setup depends on console-terminus, and uses the Terminus fonts
by default. Please consider defaulting to VGA instead. As the Ubuntu
changelog puts it:

Indeed it doesn't. Having the option of Terminus seems useful, but
using it by default feels uncomfortable.

Ideally, console-setup could just Suggests: console-terminus, and
offer it as an option if installed.

Thanks,
Josh Triplett

Bug#496724: docbook-xsl does not put a public/system ID by default to output

2008-08-31 Thread Daniel Leidert
reassign 496724 aptitude
retitle 496724 Set public/system ID for HTML output via chunker.output.doctype-*
thanks

If you want a public/sytem ID in your HTML output, you have to set it yourself.
The docbook-xsl stylesheets do not set these values by default but offer the
following parameters to set/adjust these values:

http://docbook.sourceforge.net/release/xsl/current/doc/html/chunker.output.doctype-public.html
http://docbook.sourceforge.net/release/xsl/current/doc/html/chunker.output.doctype-system.html

Set these parameters accordingly in your customization layer. AFAIK docbook-xsl
produces valid (X)HTML. Please clone and/or reassign this bug back to
docbook-xsl
if it does not for you.

Regards, Daniel

And just to belabor the point a little, the problem is that this
dependency isn't actually met, because php5-cgi is installed at an
earlier version. This is an inherent limitation of the greedy resolver
in apt, which aptitude uses when you run, e.g., "install".

I'm pretty sure this was filed as a bug against apt, but I can't
find the specific bug report. Maybe my memory is faulty. If you
can confirm that you see the same dependencies that I do, I could
reassign it to apt; it might be possible to fix some simple cases
of this by just scanning the dependency list twice.

 Daniel

Bug#496407: fixed in sng 1.0.2-6

I'm not sure what you mean: removing and fixing an unused script have
precisely the same the same effect.

Just in case there is confusion, the sng package was not removed. What was
remove was an unused, obsolete, buggy development script that erroneously
installed. As stated in the changelog: "removing sng_regress because it's
useless for users, and now has a security bug filed against it." It was a
mistake to ever include it in the package in the first place, so removing
it is the right course of action here.

If you (or anyone else) would like to submit a patch to fix sng_regress, I
will be happy to apply the patch in the source package, but I don't plan to
including sng_regress as a binary in the sng package.

Bug#497329: boinc-manager: abnormal cpu usage when viewing Transfers tab

2008-08-31 Thread Sandro Tosi
Package: boinc-manager
Version: 6.2.18-1
Severity: normal
File: /usr/bin/boincmgr

Hello,
When selecting Transfers tab, I can see that boincmgr takes about 16-20% of
cpu time, while it uses almost none on any other tabs. It's reproducible even
closing boincmgr and reopen it.

Actually, I got a pretty full Transfers list, with ~2000 files to be send or
downloaded, so that might be the cause.

Kindly,
Sandro

All I know is I was happy with
APT::Get::Purge "true";
back in apt-get, and was dismayed that no such janitor exists in aptitude.

DB> I suppose you could file a wishlist bug asking for this feature to be

OK, I hereby file that bug. Thanks.

All you need to do perhaps is just before the final list of what to
remove is shown to the user for approval, change all the removes to
purges, if of course APT::Get::Purge or whatever you want to name it
is true.

Just like how apt-get adds "*" to each name it proposes to the user to
remove.

aptitude is based on the apt libraries and uses much of the same
code that apt uses. In this case, php5 is being selected by the code
in pkgDepCache::MarkInstall, which is shared between aptitude and apt.

Bug#497316: general: Building entire system from source

2008-08-31 Thread Neil Williams

> distribution built from Debian sources.

Bearing in mind your previous bug report, I really think you should be
looking at Emdebian and asking these questions on the debian-embedded
mailing list - we're doing all this stuff. You will have to do 90% of
the work yourself but that's inevitable (see below). At least Emdebian
can provide the tools and infrastructure to get the job done - mainly
because we are doing it ourselves.

> Ideally, a live CD, could be used to build the entire base system from source
> by simply specifying the source repository to be used.

Umm, just how are you going to fit the system and the source on a CD?
You might with an Emdebian system that has a GUI in 75Mb but probably
not a full Debian install + source. I don't know how big the source
would be for the current Emdebian GUI but my current Emdebian build tree
has only 240 source packages and takes up 9.2Gb for a single
architecture. (Yes, that is a build tree as opposed to a directory
containing compressed source packages but it does give an indication of
the possible scale.) That doesn't even count the build-dependencies that
are installed. Yes, it really can take 9.2Gb to create a binary distro
of 75Mb. That is most definitely not a typo. GlibC, GCC, Xorg, they are
all v.big source packages.

With the full build environment and sources and various other
components, I think you could create a CD but note that this is *you*
creating it. I cannot see that Debian would provide such a CD for you -
at least not until Emdebian has done a whole lot more work on the Debian
infrastructure. Customisation includes bespoke patches and full control
over package selection (including dropping perl and Essential) but you
will have to do 90% of the work yourself. The tools exist, feel free to
use them - just do ask your questions on
instead of filing general bugs (which
all get CC'd to debian-devel and which can end up annoying people when
you start asking for stuff that is just "out-there" when it comes to how
Debian normally works - especially this close to a release). If you want
to change Debian to work with small systems and embedded systems,
debian-embedded is the place to be - not bugs.debian.org and not
debian-devel (at least until Lenny is released).

FYI the problems with what you require come in several stages:
1. Package selection - how much are you building? For embedded stuff,
you want very tight control over this.
2. Build sequencing - which ones do you build first? Entirely determined
by your choices under Q1 but plotting your path through the dependencies
such that the build-dependencies of foo are available when you need to
build foo to build bar - without finding that bar build-depends on baz
which you haven't built yet, and so on.
3. You cannot decide on what sources to put on the media until you have
solved Q1 and Q2. You cannot know if they will fit until you've answered
Q3.

Now there are tools that can help with this process (mancoosi are
working on things like that and others already exist) but there is no
one-size-fits-all solution, especially for embedded stuff. Then you run
into problem 4:

4. Once you've done it, you don't need to work out how to do it again so
the optimisation never happens and each process is just as much work as
the last. Packages change, build-depends change, by the time you've done
one, the whole path can be radically different.

Yes, I have done Q1, Q2, Q3 and Q4 for Emdebian ARM. It took the best
part of a year.

> The system could then be configured to allow source builds of all
> additional packages.

Already done - and if you use the existing Emdebian support, the
distribution can be entirely cross-built from source too. You just need
to do the work yourself.

P.S. I would reassign this bug but I'm waiting for the pseudo-package
for Emdebian that would perfectly suit this bug report. (hint!)
:-)

(I know everyone at ftpmaster is out-of-their-minds-busy right now but
it would take this traffic off -devel if the pseudo-package was
available . . . )

"The help command is available for all objects. It prints out a list
of available commands and argument syntax conventions."
... so it doesn't look like a documentation problem to me.

To make it more obvious maybe we could add a "helpusage" wrapper that
prints out which argument was interpreted as a call for help.

... if (matches(*argv, "help"))
helpusage(*argv);
...

void helpusage(char *arg) {
fprintf(stderr, "Argument '%s' interpreted as a call for help.\n\n",
arg);
usage();
}

Would be lots of places to update to call the new helper function, so
I'm holding off on creating a patch for that until I get some feedback
if people think it would be a good idea.

Anyway, here's a patch that makes it possible to add and, probably more
importantly as it could have been added by other tool (ifconfig), delete
tunnels matching help if you explicitly state the name argument. (ip tun
del name he)

Bug#434393: Please remove libwhisker-perl from the archive

2008-08-31 Thread gregor herrmann
reassign 434393 ftp.debian.org
retitle 434393 RM: libwhisker-perl -- orphaned, no rdepends, superseded
thanks

Hi ftp-masters,

when going through the list of orphaned perl module packages
libwhisker-perl came up as a candidate for removal:

* it's orphaned
* it has no reverse depends, since nikto switched to
 libwhisker2-perl
* libwhisker2-perl seems to be the successor of libwhisker-perl

Two quotes from :

http://lists.debian.org/debian-perl/2008/08/msg00104.html

Drop it. 1st class spaghetti perl, superceded by whisker2. It was in
 the repository once.

http://lists.debian.org/debian-perl/2008/07/msg00120.html

Vincent Bernat (also maintainer of nikto):

 libwhisker-perlwas usedby niktowhich isnow using
libwhisker2-perl. Maybe it can be removed.

Bug#497326: ttf-unifont: adjust combining mark positioning

2008-08-31 Thread unifoundry
Package: ttf-unifont
Version: 1:5.1.20080820-1
Severity: normal
thanks

The unifont.ttf font handles combining marks such as accents as
zero-width. This means that if they are used, they are superimposed on
a following glyph. This is the way combining marks are entered on many
Input Method Editors. However, it would be better if the positioning of
combining marks were adjusted so that they are superimposed on a
preceding glyph to match the Unicode Standard. This would improve
Debian Unicode support.

Bug#497325: logcheck-database: please ignore NetworkManager Supplicant state changed

2008-08-31 Thread Brice Goglin
Package: logcheck-database
Version: 1.2.68
Severity: normal

Hello,

When wireless is enabled on my laptops (ie all the time), NetworkManager floods
the logs with ' Supplicant state changed:' 0 or 1.
Logcheck should ignore these dozens of messages.

A dumb rule like these one works here:
^\w{3} [ :0-9]{11} [._[:alnum:]-]+ NetworkManager: Supplicant state
changed: 0
^\w{3} [ :0-9]{11} [._[:alnum:]-]+ NetworkManager: Supplicant state
changed: 1

thank you

Bug#497324: python-lxml: lxml.etree unusable when python-stats is installed

2008-08-31 Thread Andrew Deason
Package: python-lxml
Severity: serious
Version: 2.1.1-1

When the python-stats package is installed, attempting to use
lxml.etree results in an AttributeError being thrown:

ng:~# python -c 'import lxml.etree'
ng:~# apt-get install -qq python-stats
Selecting previously deselected package python-stats.

Lines 39-42 in lxml.etree.pyx look like this:

try:
from io import BytesIO, StringIO
except ImportError:
from StringIO import StringIO, StringIO as BytesIO

When python-stats is not installed, the 'io' module does not exist, so
line 40 throws an ImportError which is caught, and all is good. When
python-stats is installed, it installs `io.py', which seems unrelated to
this, and doesn't define BytesIO. Normally this would generate an
ImportError as well, but the C code generated from the .pyx tries to get
BytesIO as an attribute of io, which throws an AttributeError, which
goes uncaught and propagates up to the caller.

I'm not sure if this is a bug in python-lxml, python-stats, or whatever
generates the C from the pyx, but I'm filing this for python-lxml since
I know how to fix it there. Attached is a patch to the pyx which would
fix this issue when the C code is regenerated. I don't know how to
regenerate it (pyrex doesn't seem to like the pyx files, and I don't
know what else to try...), so the C is unpatched. Not sure if this is
the "correct" way to fix it, but it should work when the C is
regenerated.

Wasn't sure of the severity on this... an unrelated package installed
causes a rather large portion of this package to be unusable, and
anything that depends on it is thus unusable (I discovered this because
bcfg2 stopped working). Seems like it might be RC, though I'm unsure (it
seems like not Conflict'ing with python-stats could be a policy
violation when the package largely doesn't work when python-stats is
installed), but marking as serious just in case.

Is anyone having success running iceweasel on x86-64 or the next release of
Debian is going to ship with an iceweasel that does not run on x86-64 systems?

Well, this bug is already reported upstream as
http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1657421&group_id=10894&atid=110894

The extra CR is issued because tclsh sets end-of-line translation for
stdout and stderr channeld to crlf (effectively adding CR).

If you know why the translation should be lf (no translation), please
tell that in the above bug.

Bug#495711: aptitude: doesn't remove automatically installed packages

Can you reproduce the same behavior at the command-line? If so, I'd
appreciate a typescript / dump of the output of that command with the
options "-o 'Debug::pkgAutoRemove=true'" on the command-line.

If not, please run aptitude-create-state-bundle and place its output
somewhere that I can download it.

Thanks,

Bug#495717: [Pkg-openldap-devel] Bug#495717: Slapd no creating socket in the right place

2008-08-31 Thread Juan Miguel Corral
Yes, you're right. I checked many times slapd.conf, but forgot
/etc/default/slapd. There was a line I had in etch like this:

  SLAPD_SERVICES="ldap:/// ldaps:/// ldapi://%2fvar%2frun%2fldapi/"

which I kept when migrated to lenny. Replacing this line with

  SLAPD_SERVICES="ldap:/// ldaps:/// ldapi:///"

made everything work.

I apologise for the inconvenience. Thank you very much.
Juan.

That's incorrect. The default ldapi socket created by the slapd package in
lenny is /var/run/slapd/ldapi.

Have you set a non-default ldapi URI in /etc/default/slapd? There is no
reason for the slapd in lenny to be creating /var/run/ldapi as the socket
unless you've overridden the default.

Inject a package in SVN with:

$ svn-inject -o .

(that will only store diff (so hopefully only debian/) in SVN) then
use dpatch with:

$ dpatch-edit-patch -a -0 --debianonly=/path/to/tarballs/ ...

that create a new patch apply all the other ones and adding
automatically to 00list.

That cannot be done with quilt: you have to unpack the tarball in a
temp place (by hand), link/copy debian/ in it (by hand), do your
changes, copy back the patch to svn (by hand), change the series file
(by hand).

Are you kidding, right?

That's your option, and mine is that dpatch is handier, easier and
cleaner (even if I have to admit I'm trying to use quilt to get used
to it, but I still see dpatch better for me).

Bug#497323: Kernel update should update m-a created modules too

2008-08-31 Thread Christian Meyer
Package: linux-latest-2.6
Version: 15
Severity: wishlist

Hello there,
I'm running Lenny (testing) with linux-image-2.6-k7 installed (depending from
linux-image-2.6-686).
Using a prism2-USB WLAN adapter I need to use linux-wlan-ng. The kernel modules
for it are not shipped
with the linux-image so I need to compile and install it using module-assistant.

Updating linux-image unfortunately causes WLAN not to work any more until I
build new modules for the
updated kernel (I often forget to do so and wonder why Internet doesn't work).
But then: building modules
without linux-headers (and without access to the Internet to download them) is
a bit complicated.
Okay, I should have been updated linux-headers too.

I think updating the kernel automatically should update (in postinst)
user-specific modules (=build new ones)
not included in the linux-image.
Users who have compiled their own modules usually have m-a and the sources of
the corresponding modules
installed so:
m-a -l VERSION_OF_NEW_KERNEL a-i allu -t
builds exactly those modules which has been build for an older kernel version
and devices should seamlessly work
with the updated kernel.
