Bug#478655: -u does not help

2008-05-03 Thread Klavs Klavsen
Hi,

This bug just showed up a few days ago with an update, for me.

giving ntpdate the -u option does nothing to solve this problem for me.

any other ideas as what I could try? ntpdate is NOT set to start up as a
service of any kind (it's not even in /etc/init.d/).

I know, but I have a hard time to believe that readahead-watch is able
to store its pid file before /var/run/ is writable, and thus leaving
stop-readahead with no pid file to read to figure out the pid to stop
at the end of the boot. I assume here that you mean that 'readahead
works' as in a profile run with readahead works.

In short, I doubt you are testing the problematic thing, as I still
was able to reproduce the problem in a qemu test run of lenny.

Happy hacking,

Bug#479145: boxbackup-client: Complaints about «file of unknown type» (socket)

2008-05-03 Thread Tollef Fog Heen

Package: boxbackup-client

Hi,

it seems like boxbackup-client doesn't know how to ignore sockets and
so I get lines in daemon log like:

May 2 23:07:44 xoog Box Backup (bbackupd)[3512]: WARNING: Ignoring file of
unknown type: /var/run/postgresql/.s.PGSQL.5432
May 2 23:07:44 xoog Box Backup (bbackupd)[3512]: WARNING: Ignoring file of
unknown type: /var/run/postgresql/.s.PGSQL.5433

This causes boxbackup-client to send email about «files not being
backed up», which is quite annoying.

Bug#479144: libc6-i386: in some 32bit apps, resolving fails when lib32nss-mdns is not installed

2008-05-03 Thread A Mennucc
Package: libc6-i386
Version: 2.7-10
Severity: important

hi

This bug was found when trying to use the upstream binary of firefox 3.0
inside a amd64 Debian (or Ubuntu). In some situations, firefox cannot
resolve hostnames (and is then completely unusable).

Here is the bug, as described by Sylvain Pasche in
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=414197

I've been seeing this on Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 64bit too. Any trunk or branch 32bit
build fails to resolve hostnames. After some debugging I could isolate that the
getaddrinfo() libc call is always failing to resolve anything.

I turns out I was missing the lib32nss-mdns package. The /etc/nsswitch.conf
default configuration contains:

hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns mdns4

So without the lib32nss-mdns package, the libc can't load the mdns4_minimal
module and aborts the resolution.

Actually, according to the document 'info libc "Actions in the NSS
configuration"'
if the module mdns4_minimal is not available, then the behaviour should be:
  `unavail'
The service is permanently unavailable. This can either mean the
needed file is not available, or, for DNS, the server is not
available or does not allow queries. The default action is
 `continue'.
but unfortunately (as reported long ago in bug 365048), the above does not work.

I see two ways to solve this bug.
1) libc6-i386 should depend on lib32nss-mdns
2) the affected line in /etc/nsswitch.conf be changed to
 hosts: files dns mdns4
3) fix bug 365048

Any of the two above changes fix the problem.

The original maintainers of dpatch decided against using make and
using shell script for dpatch interface. I can only guess their
reasonings but there are a few caveats with the make snippets:

1. it's harder to try from command-line.

2. It's harder to get those .PHONY targets invoked the right number of
times.

But I agree having them implemented in makefiles feel much simpler.

junichi

I tried the ideas of http://wiki.debian.org/InitramfsDebug:

With 2.6.24, ls /proc/cmdline prints:

Bug#449235: Intel wireless firmware in firmware-nonfree

2008-05-03 Thread Matt Taggart
I also would like to see the various Intel wireless firmware in the
firmware-nonfree package.

1.) The Intel 3945 adapter was previously supported by the ipw3945 driver
  http://ipw3945.sourceforge.net/

but that was deprecated starting with 2.6.24, and replaced with the new
Intel Wireless WiFi Link drivers
  http://intellinuxwireless.org/

which provide a driver for the 3945 and also the 4965, both are in upstream
2.6.24 but need the microcode available at
  http://intellinuxwireless.org/?n=Downloads

The license is at
  http://intellinuxwireless.org/LICENSE.iwlwifi-ucode

and they have a licenses FAQ at
  http://intellinuxwireless.org/?n=FAQ&s=license

2.) In addition to the firmware for the ipw2200 mentioned by the original
submitter, there is also the other legacy ipw2100
  http://ipw2100.sourceforge.net/
(I didn't look at the license though)

If the licenses are acceptable for non-free please consider including these
firmwares.

Thanks,

I'm working on it but I'm about to go to bed for now. I found you can extract
the contents of the archive with no problem. I suppose if there were some way
to read the file after it's extracted, then there shouldn't be a problem.

Ogre uses the various zzip_* functions in the ZipDataStream class to read,
seek, tell, etc. from zip files. If mpak could provide the same
functionality, maybe this issue could be resolved.

Bug#479098: RM: 4digits -- RoQA; orphaned; superseded by gnome-mastermind

2008-05-03 Thread Pan Yongzhi
I think the game should not have been removed now:

1) 4digits is removed after orphaned for only 20 days, but we may find
another maintainer before removing it too soon.
2) The game rule is different from mastermind if somebody has ever
looked at it, and this is why I implement yet another one even there are
gnome-mastermind. And 4digits has high score and CLI interface. I do not
think it can simply be superseded by gnome-mastermind.
3) The upstream is still active.

But it has been done. Would it be undone if someone adopted it?

At the moment, it points to
Gilles.Robert'at'math.u-bordeaux.fr
Since he has been using this address recently on fr.sci.math, I hope it's the
good one. Otherwise, his other address
Gilles(dot)Robert(at)ujf-grenoble(dot)fr
may be valid too, since his accout in this university looks valid.

Sure.

> Can you create a bzr branch and point it for merging for us?

I am cvs/svn/git user. Give me some time to learn bzr. I just made bzr
branch here. (It was slow.)

The second code I posted is very usable. I am only naturing commets etc.

2 questions:

Question 1:

Where should message go? stdout or stderr? As I inhereted, there seems
to be no consistency.
 * debug message when turned on.
 * error message from commands
 * error mesage from script

Question 2:

Do you think current choice of apt-conf variables have to stay. I do
not like 3 irregular variables.

APT::Archives::MaxAge
APT::Archives::MinAge
APT::Archives::MaxSize

Why not use APT::Periodic:: here. (I am OK with Dir::*)

I am wondering what should I do:
 * Keep these variable names as they are. (current)
 * Switch variable names but support old ones for compatibility.
 * Switch variable names completely and do not support old ones.

I like last option but I can do any one of them to get accepted.

Osamu

PS: My wish are to use:

APT::Periodic::ArchiveMaxAge
APT::Periodic::ArchiveMinAge
APT::Periodic::ArchiveMaxSize
APT::Periodic::Debug--- new one addded for debug echo

When the module is loaded, all symbols from libpython2.x are available
to functions inside the module, so this should not be a problem to
simply remove the -lpython2.x in the final link line.

If this still doesn’t work, you can use a shlibs.local file, but this
should really be a last-resort solution.

These files were part of tetex-bin in *oldstable*, while even in stable
they are in tex-common. On the other hand, your system claims to be

Debian Release: lenny/sid

  APT policy: (500, 'unstable')

That sounds as if you didn't properly dist-upgrade somehow long ago.

That's expected, since tetex-bin is now just an empty transitional
package.

tex-common, in etch, lenny, sid. The problem with --force-confmiss is
that those files are under ucf control, not dpkg control, and ucf
doesn't understand --force-confmiss.

In other days, I'd had been able to give you a solution at once, but
currently I am so out of these ucf things that I cannot - and I must
leave now, so I'm sending this e-mail anyway.

Bug#479155: set expand-tilde off in ~/.inputrc does not work

2008-05-03 Thread Alain Greppin
Package: bash
Version: 3.1dfsg-9
Severity: minor

Tilde expansion on the command line is very annoying when you don't want
it. The tilde expansion is done anyway if the file /etc/bash_completion
is loaded (root account does not load it). For testing, I just modified
that file to work for me. Beware that modification may break others
stuff in the completions.

file /etc/bash_completion around line 324
_expand()
{
[ "$cur" != "${cur%\\}" ] && cur="$cur\\"

# expand ~username type directory specifications
if [[ "$cur" == \~*/* ]]; then
# avoiding tilde expansion

cur=$cur

elif [[ "$cur" == \~* ]]; then
cur=${cur#\~}
COMPREPLY=( $( compgen -P '~' -u $cur ) )
return [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Wrong this is not the default configuration of /etc/nsswitch.conf. This
is the configuration installed by libnss-mdns. libc6-i386 works
perfectly without lib32nss-mdns, no need to install it.

Reassigning the bug.

Heh, makes sense.

I could profile the boot process (with that kernel commandline param) and
after doing this, when booting I see all files are read ahead in the
beginning and the boot process is much faster.

After the one profiling I have done, I immediatly rebootet the computer after
logging in. /etc/readahead/boot was updated, /etc/readahead/profile not.

Bug#479152: ITP: core -- Jane Street Capital's alternative standard library for OCaml

  Version : 0.5.0

* URL : http://ocaml.janestcapital.com/?q=node/13
* License : LGPL
  Programming Lang: OCaml
Description : Jane Street Capital's alternative standard library for OCaml

Core is Jane Street Capital's alternative standard library for OCaml.
   .
Core does a number of things: it provides tail recursive versions of
non tail recursive functions in the standard library; changes the
signature of many of the standard modules; includes generic
serialization for most types, and adds some entirely new modules and
   new functionality within existing modules.
   .
Beware: Core extends some functionality from OCaml's standard
library, and outright changes or replaces other. The goal is not to
preserve complete compatibility with the standard.

The package is being worked on at
git://git.debian.org/git/pkg-ocaml-maint/packages/core.git (already
writable to debian-ocaml-maint contributors; help is welcome from them
as well as from anyone interested).

Cheers.

Bug#479098: RM: 4digits -- RoQA; orphaned; superseded by gnome-mastermind

2008-05-03 Thread Thomas Viehmann

Hi Pan,

thanks for sharing your thoughts about 4digits maintenance.
As you correctly notice, the package has been removed because it does not
currently have a Debian maintainer. Also, it never has been part of a stable
release. It is this in part this latter criterion that leads to a comparatively
short span of searching for a new maintainer before removing it.

Pan Yongzhi wrote:

But it has been done. Would it be undone if someone adopted it?
While the removal cannot be "undone", 4digits can always be reintroduced in the
same way NEW packages enter Debian.

Kind regards

T.

*** Please type your report below this line ***
Hi,

The new kernel 2.6.25-1 panics on my amd64 MacBookPro machine.
Previous kernels worked. The output is:
[...]
NET: Registered protocol family 1
NET: Registered protocol family 17
registered taskstats version 1
RAMDISK: coulndn't find valid RAM disk image starting at 0
List of all partitions:

No filesystem could mount root, tried:
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on
unknown-block (8,3)

I tried the ideas of http://wiki.debian.org/InitramfsDebug:
with rootdelay=9, it does wait for 9 seconds, afterwards it panics
with the same message.

With 2.6.24, ls /proc/cmdline prints:
BOOT_IMAGE=LinuxOLD ro root=803

so you don't land in debug console of initramfs?

Sorry, I don't understand.

When booting 2.6.24, I login as usual and have the /proc/cmdline above.

When booting 2.6.25, with or without rootdelay=9, the kernel panics, no
prompt/console.

post cat /etc/i-t/i-t.conf
and check that your root device driver is in both initramfs.

After the procedure at http://wiki.debian.org/InitramfsDebug (it should
be cd /tmp, not cd ~/tmp on the page!!!):

snoopy:/tmp$ grep reiserfs initramfs*

snoopy:/tmp$ mount

Can it be because /boot is on the / partition, which have notail?

Thanks for your help so far,

Bug#479159: RFA: utf8-migration-tool

2008-05-03 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

I request an adopter for the utf8-migration-tool package.

Description: Debian UTF-8 migration wizard
This wizard upgrades legacy system locales to their UTF-8
equivalent. It also informs users whenever files in their
home directory still utilize legacy encodings.

The package works quite well as it is.

However, now that recent Debian releases are UTF-8 by default,
its usefulness is greatly reduced for me, thus my low motivation
to further maintain it.

There's a couple of wishlist bugs that could be a good way for
whoever adopts this package to get their feet wet:

1) implement a fileselector to allow choosing another source path
for the encoding conversion.

2) improve the manual page.

Thanks in advance to whoever will adopt utf8-migration-tool.

So, can't the Xprt DDX just disable the D-Bus code?

The 10 seconds can probably be shortened. But the problem ist that
there is no guarantee that the children have closed their listening
sockets when the parent process dies. Just waiting until the parent
disappears could cause an error when starting the new apache (e.g.
when a child process is swapped out to disk).

This is not a problem since we use graceful-stop. The processes
serving open connections will continue until they are done.

The package still works as-is on Debian, but Ubuntu reports

Description : automated conversions between OCaml-values and S-expressions

Sexplib library contains functionality for parsing and pretty-printing
 S-expressions.
 .
Sexplib also contains a preprocessing module for Camlp4, which can be
used to automatically generate code from type definitions for
efficiently converting OCaml-values to S-expressions and vice versa.
In combination with the parsing and pretty-printing functionality this
frees users from having to write their own I/O-routines for the
datastructures they define. Possible errors during automatic
conversions from S-expressions to OCaml-values are reported in a very
 human-readable way.
 .
Another module contained in Sexplib you to extract and replace
 sub-expressions in S-expressions.

The package is being worked on at
git://git.debian.org/git/pkg-ocaml-maint/packages/sexplib310.git
(already writable to debian-ocaml-maint contributors; help is welcome
from them as well as from anyone interested).

Sexplib is a dependency for Core (see ITP #479152).

that's not the gnome keyring. gnome-keyring-manager works.

I wonder, I'm sure I've seen the option to always allow or always deny

I first thought this was a problem too, but the changelog shows that
it intentionally stopped building the package. I also see that there is
an libffi5 package. So I assume there is a transition going on now, and
it's something normal you see in unstable.

Bug#479165: valgrind: --suppressions added multiple times

Package: valgrind
Version: 1:3.3.0-1

Running valgrind in a program that seems to reexecute itself (by
replacing that program by a wrapper calling it under valgrind) leads
to the grand-children getting the
"--suppressions=/usr/lib/valgrind/debian-libc6-dbg.supp" option added
multiple times, until valgrind exits with error:

==26636== Too many suppression files specified.
==26636== Increase VG_CLO_MAX_SFILES and recompile.
valgrind: Bad option '--suppressions=/usr/lib/valgrind/debian-libc6-dbg.supp';
aborting.
valgrind: Use --help for more information.

I changed the affected lines in /usr/bin/valgrind by:

if [ -d /usr/lib/debug ] && ! echo "${VALGRIND_OPTS}" | fgrep -q --
'--suppressions=/usr/lib/valgrind/debian-libc6-dbg.supp'; then
export VALGRIND_OPTS="$VALGRIND_OPTS
--suppressions=/usr/lib/valgrind/debian-libc6-dbg.supp"
fi

and now it seems to work better.

I'm not using eeepc-acpi-scripts. I use acpi-support with some custom
changes so it works with ACPI events that are sent by eeepc's hotkeys.

Since I use GNOME I find that acpi-support better integrates with the
rest of the desktop.

"core" is the name used by upstream for its tarballs, hence I would have
liked to have it as the Debian source package name. However I agree with
your concern and I will change it back.

Does it need to be? The libraries is developed by a company and the
copyright is held by the company. Maybe I can in this specific case (as
I've contacts within the company) discover who actually wrote the code,
but in the general case it won't be possible. So I presume that setting
the upstream author / copyright to a non-humans should be supported
somehow.

Nope, there have been in the past other projects like that in the OCaml
community, this one is identified within the community via the company
name.

Nope: short vs long description. Or are you suggesting the first line of
long is too similar to the whole short description?

Cheers.

Bug#479163: signed char bug in ginac/clifford.cpp

2008-05-03 Thread Martin Guy
Package: ginac
Version: 1.4.3-1

Hi! While compiling your package on arm, where characters are unsigned
by default, I noticed a bug:

g++ -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I. -I.. -g -Wall -O2 -finline-limit=1200 -c
add.cpp -fPIC -DPIC -o add.o
add.cpp: In member function 'virtual GiNaC::ex GiNaC::add::coeff(const
GiNaC::ex&, int) const':
add.cpp:295: warning: comparison is always true due to limited range
of data type
add.cpp:304: warning: comparison is always false due to limited range
of data type

because clifford_max_label returns either a valid unsigned char 0-255
or -1 on failure, which will never signal failure where character->int
promotion yields 0-255, and would give a false failure on
architectures with signed characters for a valid return value of 255
(if this is possible).

The attached patch fixed this by extending the return value to int so
that all 257 values can be returned.
This patch fixes a bug on machines where char is unsigned by default, by
extending the type of clifford_max_label to include all 257 possible
return values.

It looks like GDM (or GNOME, for the matter) is started with a locale
for which you don’t have the fonts installed.

What is the contents of the /etc/default/locale file?

This also reminds me of a similar bug in pango or cairo, but it has been
fixed quite some time ago.

I believe the explanation is here. The shutdown killed
readahead-watch, and not the boot. So you got readahead for the files
used during boot and part of the shutdown, and this was actually good
enough to speed up the boot.

Description : Binary protocol generator for OCaml

This library contains functionality for reading and writing
OCaml-values in a type-safe binary protocol. These functions provide a
safe way of performing I/O on any extensionally defined data type.
Functions, objects, and values whose type is bound through a polymorphic
record field are not supported, but everything else is.
 .
There is no support for cyclic or shared values and only little endian
 computer architectures are supported.

The "uninstallable package" report accessible via the developer's

installation fail.

Because dependencies are out of sync on that particular architecture?
Because a dependency has been removed and can no longer be satisfied?

A format similar to the "Excuses" report would be desirable to fill
this information and show e.g. which dependencies are missing.

Bug#479169: update-grub suddenly outputs double / with separate /boot partition

2008-05-03 Thread Frans Pop
Package: grub
Version: 0.97-38
Severity: important

After installing a new kernel I suddenly noticed that update-grub has
started to use double leading / before the kernels. Probably related to
the fact that I have a separate /boot partition.

I'm not sure when this exactly started. Although it does not real harm,
it is useless, ugly and a clear regression and therefore severity important.

During kernel install I get:
Found kernel: //vmlinuz-2.6.24-1-amd64
Found kernel: //vmlinuz-2.6.22-3-amd64
Found kernel: //vmlinuz-2.6.18-4-amd64

The double / can also be seen in the menu.lst below.

Hi,

Hmm, is this really worth it? Couldn't the malicious process next just
do

1) cp /usr/bin/gksudo /tmp/bin/gksudo

2) ptrace POKETEXT all potential parents of gksudo to call
   /tmp/bin/gksudo instead

What if gksudo showed a "personalized greeting text" that only the
local user knows? This way user could detect if she/he is actually
talking to the real setgid gksudo that can read the "secret" greeting
from disk. (Of course normal people are way too lazy to set something
like this.)

best regards,
Timo Lindfors

The reply to SANE_NET_INIT contains pure crap as the network capture
shows. I honestly have no idea how such values can end up in there.

Anyway the problem is on the server side and not on the client side.

Can you run

 $ SANE_DEBUG_DLL=255 saned -d255

And do a scanimage -L on that?

As it is, the server sends back an invalid status code, followed by
what pretends to be a 12-element array.

So the net backend rightfully ignores the reply, then goes to free it,
and given the bogus data in the reply, it ends up with a nice
firework.

I'd take a backtrace of the scanimage segfault too, though I'm not
sure I can avoid it.

JB.

It should probably be caught by the appropriate plugin, but that would
probably affect the plugin's portability. It would probably be a good
idea to file a bug against the plugin and to block this one with the
new bug.

There is no requirement on having slapd running when nslcd is stopped so
I got rid of that one but other than that I've used the above.

I've also added an X-Start-Before header which lists a couple of mail
servers that provide the mail-transport-agent virtual package and some
other stuff I could think of. Extracting all service names correctly was
not easy though (some mail servers provide mail-transport-agent but not
all). Is there some place where all init scripts are available
(preferable with LSB header info and current sequence numbers)?

Btw. I would like to add something like
  Provides: $named
because nslcd can provide hostname resolution functions but I understand
that the init script is not the right place for that, what is (haven't
tried insserv yet)?

Also having something better than
X-Start-Before: whole list of daemons that may need nss functions
would be welcome because nss-ldapd can't know about all daemons that may
need NSS functions and the nslcd init script is not the right place to
configure this in my opinion.

(btw while digging around in init scripts I noticed cron and atd are
started at a very high sequence but their dependency headers suggest
they could be started sooner)

For reference, the changes are:
 ### BEGIN INIT INFO
 # Provides: nslcd
-# Required-Start:$local_fs $syslog
-# Required-Stop: $local_fs $syslog
-# Should-Start: $remote_fs $network

Most likely a bug in the svn server. I'm currently not able to find the
corresponding bugreport, but that bug was fixed in svn 1.4.4. Please try
again with SVKNORAREPLAY=1 set in the environment.

I started my own test but that will take a while.

Simply do
  UCF_FORCE_CONFFMISS=yes dpkg-reconfigure tex-common

BTW: Why are these files managed with ucf? Why doesn't dpkg fit to your
  needs?

Bug#479172: wrt pristine-tar: please support checkin of foo.tar.gz and checkout of foo.orig.tar.gz

2008-05-03 Thread Stefano Zacchiroli
Package: git-buildpackage
Version: 0.4.26
Severity: wishlist

When checking in the first tarball ever in the history of a package
(which is now properly supported by git-import-orig), it might happen
that people checkin files matching foo-x.y.z.tar.gz, i.e. before they
get renamed to foo_x.y.z.orig.tar.gz.

In such cases invoking "git-buildpackage --pristine-tar" will then fail
complaining that foo_x.y.z.orig.tar.gz. While this is correct, it would
be nice to support this scenario transparently.

My current workaround for this problem is to do "pristine-tar checkout
foo-x.y.z.tar.gz" / rename / "pristine-tar commit
foo_x.y.z.orig.tar.gz".

Many thanks for git-buildpackage!

Bug#479171: irssi: Default theme does not go well with white terminal background

2008-05-03 Thread Tim Retout
Package: irssi
Version: 0.8.12-3
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

The default irssi colour theme puts your nick and action nicks in bold
white. When using a white terminal background, which is the default for
at least gnome-terminal, these become hard to see.

This patch changes the default theme to make those sections use bold,
but use the default colour. The bold white activity messages in the
statusbar are left alone, because the background there is specified as
blue by default.

It would be nice if something like this could be applied to the Debian
package, and/or go upstream.

Thanks,

Tim Retout <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Most likely a bug in the svn server. I'm currently not able to find the
corresponding bugreport, but that bug was fixed in svn 1.4.4. Please try
again with SVKNORAREPLAY=1 set in the environment.

OK. I tried it, and it works.

Bug#479174: [gnutls26] Non-permissive subjectAltName wildcard

2008-05-03 Thread Jean-Philippe Garcia Ballester
Package: gnutls26
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---
It seems too me that the subjectAltName wildcard matching has strong
constraints.
First, it allows only one wildcard. Since a wildcard can only match a single
domain component, multiple wildcards are useful (e.g., *.*.example.org). I
did not see in the rfc 2818 such restriction.
Second, it only allows the wildcard to be at the beginning of the hostname.
Since the rfc 2818 gives “f*.com” as an example, I believe this is a false
assert.
Third, it only allows the wildcard to be followed by a ‘.’. This is not
clearly stated in the rfc, but I believe it is reasonnable to assume that
if “f*.com” is allowed, then “f*o.com” should be allowed as well.
The attached patch fixes all these issues and add some tests.

Switched back to working on initial packaging for v3.14a after being

Have you already uploaded the NMU? I'm doing a new upload (with new
upstream release and other fixes) and the libpci-dev fix anyway.
Please let me know.

Thanks, Uwe.

Please do send such reprots with LC_ALL=C.

The reason why it complains is that some versioned depends or
conflicts results in a solution where removing debconf-i18n is
neccessary but also keeping debconf is neccessary. It doesn't find an
dist-upgrade solution where it can keep them both installed or remove
them both.

This is toally normal for unstable. Packages frequently have broken
dependencies causing apt-get to run into unsolvable situations and
give errors like this. The error usualy is not with what it says but
some package further down the dependency chain. You can turn on the
debugging for pkgProblemResolver::Resolve to follow apts reasoning.

As you say yourself apt-get upgrade worked fine. apt-get install also
works on the right packages. So apt-get is still verry much
usable. Lowering the severity. Hope the maintainers don't mind.

Goswin

Bug#479178: python-chardet: Add command-line program for detecting character encoding of files

2008-05-03 Thread Ben Finney
Package: python-chardet
Version: 1.0.1-1
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

I wanted a command-line tool using 'python-chardet' to report on the
detected character encoding of arbitrary specified files. So I wrote
one.

The patch 'chardet-1.0.1_unit-test-scaffold.patch' adds unit test
support modules that I used to develop the program, and may be useful
for adding more unit tests in future.

The patch 'chardet-1.0.1_detect-encoding-program.patch' adds a unit
test module for the program (which depends on the scaffolding in the
above patch), and the program 'bin/detect-encoding' (which doesn't
depend on anything except Python and python-chardet).

I hope these additions can be included in the upstream and/or Debian
package of 'python-chardet', to save others time in using it, and to
expose its main functionality in command-line form.

As of MIMEDefang 2.64, we properly set "$$" when forking a new

Does it at least wait a while? It is a daily jobs and if it runs an
hour late because the cache was locked nobody will mind. An error mail
just because apt-get was in use at the time cron.daily triggered is
anoying though.

Just my thoughts.

Not that I am aware of. I am hoping someone will find time to extract
all and check the dependencies for loops, but I'm not aware of such
effort at the moment.

For insserv, I believe the location would be a file in
/etc/insserv.conf.d/. Have not tested this myself, though.

Happy hacking,

Do you have any more details on that?

I.e., where the grub was installed, was there a separate /boot

Bug#375922: triggers support!

2008-05-03 Thread Riccardo Stagni
Now finally dpkg support triggers (from version 1.14.17). Please read
/usr/share/doc/dpkg/triggers.txt.gz for details.

If you need some packages to copy from^W^W "look for inspiration",
initramfs-tools, man-db and doc-base already support it :)

(I'm writing because my machine spent a lot of time with the recent
texlive upgrade. I looked in the bts and, while a lot of people complained
about this issue, seems that nobody told you about the recent trigger
support)

Bug#479052: saned uses incorrect protocol

2008-05-03 Thread Giuseppe Sacco
Hi Julien,
I did a few more tests. I am not able to reproduce the problem if I call
saned from the command line. The problem only arise when I use it via
inetd.

Running it via inetd with SANE_DEBUG_DLL=255 I get (in syslog)
http://eppesuigoccas.homedns.org/~giuseppe/debian/saned.log

I cannot see anything wrong in this log when grepping for saned. But,
when I look at the *complete* log I see:

Does this ring any bells?

If, as it was suggested, I comment out the line "net autodiscovery"
in /etc/sane.d/epson2.conf, then scanimage works correctly.

Bye,
Giuseppe
