installation methods
I was wondering the other day about alternate installation methods, that is alternate to the standard interactive process. Does Debian support any automated installation processes? I.e. give dpkg a list of packages and it will install the current versions. One nice application would be a simplified installation process similar to those we see with other gui installer programs where you can select a standard or custom installation etc. It would be particularily nice to have setups for standard machine setups like 'nntp server', 'web server', 'developer workstation', 'user workstation'. Printing question ...
Does anybody know how to prevent a banner page from being printed? I'm printing to an HP4M and after each print job a banner page gets printed (it looks like the contents of the cf file). There used to be a no banner switch for printcap, but I didn't see one in the Linux man page. Any ideas? By the way, when I print to a QMS PS printer here, I don't get the banner page (although they're different queues and printcap entries). I'm using apsfilter in case that's useful. I also checked the printer, but there doesn't appear to be any console function to turn this on or off and I'm the only one that gets it. Thanks in advance. Richard G. New X11 installation
Hi all, Only me. I have now got a limping X11 installation. A few questions/observations: 1) I installed xserver_svga from Debian-1.2. When I run xbase-configure it complains at the end of the installation that there is no XF86_S3 (I have a Dell Dimension P130 with an S3 Trio 64 display driver). I generated a link in /usr/X11R6/bin pointing to XF86_SVGA and it seems to work ok, but... 2) If I specify the card as an S3 Trio 64 then when it launches the X screen the dimensions are all wrong. In fact I can only see the top left quadrant this means that I can't get to the xvidtune options. 3) Once I configure and X starts I don't get a login prompt. It just reflects the messages that diald generates for some unknown reason. What am I doing wrong? Generating a boot disk for 5 disk set
For some reason, my first message got lost. The spam nazi caught it the first time, so I registered, got the confirmation back and resent the message, but I never saw it. So if this is a dup, please excuse me. I'm installing a new 2.1 Gb drive in place of my 350 Mb. Current set up is the first drive is a 350, and the second is a 1 Gb. The first drive has one dos partition and 3 Linux/Debian parts. I'm going to move the 350 to the second drive position and install the 2.1 in the first, temporarily. Then I want to install a fresh copy of Linux on the 2.1. Just enough pieces to copy the data from the 350 to the 2.1. I'd like to generate a boot disk like the one in the 5 disk set that I used to first install Debian 1.1. I attempted to just do a make zdisk rdev /dev/fd0 /dev/fd0 but when I booted it, it did pause for the root floppy as expected, but it paniced with a VFS unable to mount root on 02:00. So that didn't work. So how do I create a boot disk that I can used in place of the original one? I've got a custom kernel that I'd rather use. Thanks, Jim. Another (different) printing question
I used to run magic filter on an older Debian system and it worked fine. I installed 1.1 a few months back and re-installed the magicfilter and now I have the stair-step problem. I have read the HOWTO and it said to run a filter, and described one to fix that problem, but with magicfilter pointing to the laserjet-lo filter, I can't do that. I'm surprised that I didn't have an option to tell the install that I needed a CR at the end of line. I know I can change the defaults on the printer but then it won't work right in DOS/WIN. I know that there is a way to make magicfilter work, 'cause it used to, but I don't recall doing anything special then, but I could have and forgotten about it. Anyway does anyone know how to cure stair-steps with magic filter? I looked through the laserjet-lo filter script, but nothing jumped out at me. Thanks, Jim. upgrade from 1.1 - 1.2, some minor problems
I have 3 Intel machines running Debian 1.1. I have just upgraded one of them to Debian 1.2. These are the minor problems I had 1) netstd and gcc required cpp, but did not tell me up front in dselect, but at the time it tried to install. I fixed it with a manual dpkg -i of cpp, then a manual install of netstd and gcc. 2) I had some problems installing gs, but I did not pursue it on this machine since I decided I didn't really need it. I will need it on my other machines. I think it has to do with the newer version from Alladin. 3) I decided to remove gpm after I upgraded it. I could not and still cannot remove it. dpkg gives me an error on pre-installation script. I'm still stuck on this one. 4) In the configuration mode of dselect, I needed to use the 'Z' parameter to move to the background and examine configuration files. The first package I tried this on was 'xntp'. After I was finished I typed 'fg' and the system got really confused. This never happened to me before! I basically had to start all over with the configuration phase. I got around this problem by using another console window to look at configuration files. I didn't trust the 'fg' command anymore. 5) I tried to create a new boot floppy for kernel 2.0.27, and could not issue dd if=vmlinuz of=/dev/fd0 bs=80k conv=sync due to a 'read-only' error message. The usually change to rw to all for /dev/fd0 did not fix the problem. I do have fdutils installed, but don't have time to learn how to use them. I'm stuck on this one also (i.e., it boots from the hard drive via lilo, but I can't create a new boot floppy at this point, sort of fundamental stuff here). That's about all of my problems now. I'm a little reluctant to upgrade my main machine(s) which have X, TeX, and alot of other software packages which this system does not. However, the print server I just upgraded is running fine now. The entire upgrade took about 1-2 hours. Really nice as usual from the Debian team!!! I am looking forward to trying some of the new packages. I'd be glad to post one or more of the above items as bugs unless someone points out that I have made some other mistake I'm not aware of. -- /--\ | James D. bug in X-Windows?

In rxvt I become root and the start goppp (which is a little script for connect to the Net).Simulataneosly, I start Netscape. When Netscape is loaded, I type exit for exit from the privileged shell: but the cursor in rxvt do'nt move, and the X-Windows screen shift up, while black appear down. I hold pressed return, and after a while the colors in the screen change. Therefore I press Ctrl-Alt-Back and return to Linux, which I restart X from. After I do'nt have problems. I did something like this when installing Debian over Slackware, but you need enough disk space to do it: Do as if you were going to install Debian from scratch. Debian installation disk will recognize your old partitions, but you should not fdisk them again. Just be sure to mount them *without* initiating them. (i.e. select mount an already initiated partition). As soon as you can, switch to another virtual console and do this: cd /target mkdir old.linux mv * old.linux mv old.linux/lost+found . You can now switch to the first virtual console and install the Debian base system and everything else over this, and you will still have all the previous system in /old.linux. Now it is just a matter of remove everything you do not need from /old.linux and put things in place again. For example, if you had a user named joeh in your old system, create a new user named joeh in the new Debian system, and move everything from /old.linux/home/joeh to the new /home/joeh. Re: libg++ for 1.1
I am trying to build octave 2.0 on my 1.1 system. I did not have the c++ libs (libg++), but if I get the new libg++, that depends on libc5.4, but I have libc5.2. (I am assuming that my lack of the c++ libs is what is causing the octave configure script to think my C++ compiler does not work (the c++ calls fails due to no -lstdc++ lib)). What is the best course of action? Will a new libc cause problems? Can I force the libg++ install. Is there an octave 2.0 binary in the works? Personally, I would advice to just install the new libc, libg27++. This is what debian 1.2 uses, and you will not be able to install most of the packages in 1.2 if you have libc-5.2.18. On the other hand, I don't use Octave, so I cannot promise you that it will work. What I need is some one to make a boot floppy without! the non eide cdrom stuff. I have tested making kernel with this and only the aic7xxx scsi driver. It boots fine the problem is, its just to complicated to create a debian kernel from redhat is the a reason the rc.d files are located in different locations??? Also through I like the package approach. I wonder why the linux standard includes all the package files in system file locations?? Looking at the dpkg-deb command I don't thing it would be too difficult to drop them into package subdirectories. And from the lists of install packages create an expaned PATH by/for /etc/profile. I believe this could all be done with out changing the packages in anyway. The advantage is more modular packages which are easier to clean up if the install scripts fail. Also packages could be exported more easily without requiring exporting all of /usr which in my oppinion is NOT a good idea. -Tim. -Tim. -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] .
