Recommendations wanted: usb to WiFi dongle

2020-03-03 Thread Charles Curley
I tried getting an ASUSTek Computer, Inc. USB-N13 802.11n Network
Adapter running under Debian Buster. That appears to be a complete bust
(see the previous thread).

Recommendations for replacements?

This for a SOHO application. The adapter is to go on a FIT-PC1 using USB
2.0. 2.4GHz is sufficient; 5 GHz would be nice for future expansion.
b/g/n wireless modes would be nice. Radio range of ~~30 meters indoors
should do it. High speed is not a requirement.

The plan is to use this with hostapd to control the network.

I forgot to mention not a single message in syslog, kern.log, or any
other log I could find. Nothing. Nada. Zero.

No, that's what I want to discover to fill an appropriate bug report
against the right component. I must admit MT7612u support is buggy as
hell. I suffer many other bugs with these devices, all of them related
to the inhability to follow AP frequency changes in the 5 GHz band,
but this one does not seems related to the wifi itself. When the bug
triggers I can send and receive packets. Only sending arp messages
seems to be missing.

I can't test the devices in Windows because I have no Windows here,
but I have four dongles, from two different manufacturers, all of them
with the MT7612U chip in it and all of them load the mt76x2u module
when plugged, so I must conclude they are using the correct device
driver/module. The problem exists with all the four dongles.

Symptoms: From time to time I lost Internet connection for a period of
about 5 to 30 minutes. It happens at least two or three times a day.

Setup: Desktop computer (192.168.1.2) running Debian Buster amd64 with
current kernel 4.19.98-1 connected via WiFi to router / gateway
(192.168.1.1). Wifi Adapter is MT7612U from Mediatek.

While connection is lost:

- I can launch wavemon and I can confirm the WiFi adapter is still
connected and sending / receiving packets and beacons.

- Arp command shows the gateway HWaddress as incomplete.

- Launching Wireshark in the desktop computer I can see incoming
packets from other devices, but I can also see a "Who has 192.168.1.1?
Tell 192.168.1.2" ARP requests from my desktop every second. At first
glance it seems the gateway isn't responding to my arp requests,
but...

- I can see arp queries from the gateway to my desktop, and I can see
the responses, but they seem they never reach the gateway.

- Forcing network activity with my smartphone, I can see also arp
requests from the smartphone answered by the desktop, but a ping from
the smartphone to the desktop machine gives no response. Of course the
phone can use internet without any problem using the same gateway.

- If I unplug and replug the WiFi adapter everything works again. If I
left the WiFi adapter plugged, eventually I get an arp response from
the gateway, and everything works normally again. This may take up to
20-30 minutes. Only once the wifi connection crashed after several
minutes.

It seems that when I lost connectivity I can't sent arp messages but I
can receive them. They are sent, I can see them with Wireshark, but it
seems they will never get outside the machine. I searched for known
bugs but I wasn't able to find anything, only a message from an Ubuntu
user aparently having the same problem, but with a different WiFi
adapter and kernel version (4.18 I think):

https://askubuntu.com/questions/1122683/no-internet-access-after-random-intervals-in-ubuntu-18-04-2-lts

The problem is now I don't know how to get the culprit of this bug. Is
the kernel? Is the Mediatek kernel module?

I would check the `dmesg` command output. If there are erros there then
they re coming from the kernel.

Have you made sure that the wifi is not the problem? Before going into
wild software investigation? For example have you tried in a Windows
laptop with the correct device drivers? Because you even might not be
using the correct device drivers!

Any help will be appreciated.

gmsh errors on start

2020-03-03 Thread Gary L. Roach

Hi all,

I have had gmsh installed on my system for a long time but have not used
it for a while. When I tried to use it yesterday I got the following error:

*    gary@ctech:~$ gmsh
    gmsh: symbol lookup error:
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libgmsh.so.4.1: undefined symbol:
_ZTV20BRepMesh_FastDiscret

    gary@ctech:~$*

I did the usual purge and reinstall but to no avail.  Running *apt-cache
depends gmsh* gave me:

***gary@ctech:~$ apt-cache depends gmsh**
**    gmsh**
**      Depends: mpi-default-bin**
**      Depends: libc6**
**      Depends: libgmsh4.1**
**      Depends: libopenmpi3**
**      Recommends: gmsh-doc**

I reinstalled each of the dependancies but still have the problem. Is
this a bug or is it easily fixed.

Many years ago I messed with PXE booting, and found the official ISC

Hi, I read the DHCP documentation, but it does not specify how those options

L'he mirat i no hi havia cap error, és més, semblava que havia de

Al final resulta que el que ha acabat passant és que KDE^W Plasma havia

Ja torna a funcionar tot :-)

I would use ID3 tags as "database", like this:

 2. Load all tunes into Picard, compute ReplayGain, and apply tags
 3. Use a player which respects ReplayGain tags to normalize volume
 4. Where some ReplayGain values are "wrong", manually adjust tags

Personally I would use Picard for tagging and ReplayGain computing
(hint: configure it to enable module "ReplayGain"), and I would use MPD
+ mpd-sima + ncmpcpp as player, but there are many many many options and
most of them follows same general flow described above.

Music players that save (different) volume settings for each song (was: Re: mplayer with -loop 0 but w/o volume reset?

2020-03-03 Thread rhkramer
(I'm not the OP.) I wonder if there are any music players that can save a
(play)list along with a selected volume for each song on the playlist? (Or
use a database of songs with volume setting, and then access the database as
the playlist calls for a song?)

(I'm aware of things (not sure that any are implemented in LInux music
players) that try to "normalize" the audio by either reviewing the content of
the entire song or some portion of it and and adjust the volume to be similar
to the volume of other songs on the playlist, but those don't always work as
well as I would like. Something that allowed you to set a volume for each
song (and maybe even store a list of volume changes for songs that had large
changes in volume) would be nice.)

My guess (untested) would be per Section 8.4 in
https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc2132
with the leading Code=43 and Len=n
octets possibly prepended by the software.

And a bit of idle searching [1] suggests that perhaps (untested)
only the trailing "Raspberry Pi Boot" string is required.

Also I notice that 50:58:45 spells "PXE".

Audacity: display broken

2020-03-03 Thread Markus Grunwald
Hello,

After a while, I wanted to edit some audio files with
audacity. Unfortunately, it is impossible because the display is broken:
The Menus work, but that's about it. The waveform display is never
updated, nor are the various meters.

I have not found any hint that someone besides me is experiencing these
issues :/ So it might be something about my setup. But that shouldn't be
so special: Its a Lenovo T570 with debian testing. I started audacity in

That's what I would expect and believed was what the OP was asking for,
failing somehow in miraculous fashion to derive the obvious inference
that he's changing the volume during play.

IOW, I misread his post.

I guess it's too much to ask that Emmanuel decide upon a commodious
volume before inducing the loop in order that I might save a little
face.

Hello, I believe "firewalld" fits your needs, it as a frontend available
in the package "firewall-config" and a taskbar notification/status with
"firewall-applet" that works in various desktop environments.
The docs can walk you or your users though the basics and more [1].

"gufw" + "ufw" while not designed for nftables also work with it thanks
to iptables compatibility wrappers. The occasional bug was discussed on
this list not long ago.

Both have the advantage of being packaged in Debian.

[1] https://firewalld.org/documentation/howto/

I have only used "firewalld" for small deployments, usually with the
command-line tool "firewall-cmd". The applet is a bonus so that users
can confirm that the firewall is running without the need of typing a
command, and get feedback if something is blocked. It does use xml syntax.

For anything larger my tool of choice is "shorewall" [2], which in
Debian works with iptables or nftables thanks to the compatibility
layer. The configuration is easy enough, the syntax is very
straightforward, but you would have to forego the g.u.i. requirement, I
am not aware of any graphical front-end for "shorewall".

En el meu cas (portàtil, tinc també integrada intel) just després d'aquesta

Thanks for making all of us smarter. To throw my two cents in, I did some
legwork, and (as usually) Wikipedia [1] provides some light.

Those options are encoded as

 - code: 1 octet
 - length (of following data): 1 octet
 - data octets.

They are closed off by one "option" 0xff with no length octet.

So taking apart your magic string above (and rewriting a bit to
make more readable):

  06 01 03
  0a 04 00 50 58 45
  09 14 00 00 11 52 61 73 70 62
 65 72 72 79 20 50 69 20
 42 6f 6f 74
  ff

But the codes, alas, are not interpretable according to the
ref given. An exercise for the reader :)

It is probably not clear what I meant with the message.

It is not necessary to use dnsmasq. Just the proper configuration in
isc-dhcp-server. If the vendor encapsulated option is missing, the boot
process do not continue. When the configuration option is present the boot
sequence continues.

root-path must point to the boot directory, so that Rpi can find the boot
files.
