Please help with sendmail-fetchmail problem

2002-06-04 Thread Brian Schramm
I am running Debian Woody as up to date as I can get.
I have 3 mail servers on the net that I want to get my
mail onto my local machine I figure fetchmail to get
the mail by pop3 and sendmail on my local server to
deliver it to my local mailboxes. I keep getting
error messages that refer to the inability of sendmail
not finding anything in the /etc/mail/ssl directories
and fetchmail cannot authenticate the mailbox user.
Here are the errors out of the syslog file:

masqmail problem

2002-05-12 Thread Brian Schramm
OK. I have changed the mailer from sendmail to
masqmail. I had a problem with sendmail not working
right on my machine. I tried exim and that did not
work either. My needs are simple. I have one phone
line dedicated as a modem line for my computer's
internet access. I have had this type of a setup for
years and never had any trouble with it. In the past
year I had some hardware problems so I fixed them and
got a fresh install of Debian Woody on the machine.
It is update every week.

To make a long story short, I have had a lot of
trouble getting my email. So much so that I have set
up the family on yahoo. I decided that I need to get
my mail up on my machine so I installed masqmail. As
soon as I did, fetchmail started pulling mail into my
system! But I cannot get it to send now. I am
figureing that I do not have a setting right but I
have not found that setting yet.

Can someone help with the settings? I figure that is
all I need to change and I will have my email working
again.

Thank you in advance for any help rendered.

that's not really enough information to go on to be
 able to help you. try
describing the topology of your local network and
how it's hooked to the web.

I have a 10baset ethernet for my local network and it
is tyed into the net with a 56K dial up modem on a
normal phone line. The one machine is the gateway for
the email (pop3 and imap), web and anything else that
is not local.

you say you're running both pop3 and imap
servers--is this on the one box?

what do you mean by 'when i try to get my mail'--you
 need to describe the
 environment you're working with/in.

I have tryed several email clients to get the mail
from this box using pop3 or imap protocals. Every
time I do I get an error saying that it cannot find my
box or login failed. Right now I only have the server
on this network because I am rebuilding the network
from a hardware crash.

the fact that you're consistently getting the same
 error means that you're
consistently making the same mistake. perhaps a
 better description of your
setup process might reveal what that is.

I install the distrobution and setup my users. I then
go into my modem setup and install the program that
sets me up with my domain name on the internet. What
that does is very similar to the way gnudip does it.
My local network is set up like any other network that
I have ever set up. I save the default gateway to be
assined by the ppp system. That way it works for both
networks. I also let my ppp connection assign the dns
servers. I use the host file for any local computers.
The mail server software (pop3 and imap) is installed
as it is from the default install on debian package.
The clients (kmail and netscape for two of them) are
installed to use the opo3 or imap depending on what
the software is compatable with. This is following
the instructions for the client.

I hope this will help you help me.

Please don't do that. Leave it blank. You may be
on dialup, which limits your exposure, but it is not
good practice, and it won't help.

What is in your hosts.deny file? The Debian
standard is ALL:PARANOID, which should not cause a
 problem.

It looks to me like that would require your password ... however a
quick test on my debian box shows that it doesn't.

Some snippets from 'man sudoers' that seem relevant :

The reserved word ALL is a built in alias that always
causes a match to succeed. It can be used wherever one
   might otherwise use a Cmnd_Alias, User_Alias, Runas_Alias,
or Host_Alias. You should not try to define your own
alias called ALL as the built in alias will be used in
preference to your own. Please note that using ALL can be
dangerous since in a command context, it allows the user
to run any command on the system.
-
The User specification is the part that actually
   determines who may run what.

root ALL = (ALL) ALL
%wheel ALL = (ALL) ALL

We let root and any user in group wheel run any command on
   any host as any user.

FULLTIMERS ALL = NOPASSWD: ALL

Full time sysadmins (millert, mikef, and dowdy) may run
any command on any host without authenticating themselves.

PARTTIMERS ALL = ALL

Part time sysadmins (bostley, jwfox, and crawl) may run
any command on any host but they must authenticate
themselves first (since the entry lacks the NOPASSWD tag).

Hmm, even using the PASSWD: option I still don't have to enter my
password. I don't know why.

mailing list but I could not find anything.

you could use modconf. Install modconf if not installed and type:

 #modconf

Then you can search for the needed modules and install them with this tool.

If this won't help you: You could download the kernel sources. This is not
a very good idea if you don't plan to compile a kernel cause kernel sources
have more then 20 MB. But in the sourcetree of kernel sources there is a
directory named Documentation. On this place are all docs for kernel and
 his modules.

If you tell me which sound cards you have i could look into my kernel
sources to find out which modules you need to install.

Just a question

2001-08-30 Thread Brian Schramm
Is there a way that I can take a passwd file and compare the full name data
in it to the email ldap server and give a a list of what it finds and what it
misses? I am doing this manually but with the number of users that there are
involved it is going to be really time consuming.

I know this may not be the best place to post this but it is the only group
that I know that may have the answer.

Thanks for your time

Kmail questions

2001-08-27 Thread Brian Schramm
I just upgraded to kde 2.2 with kmail 1.3.1 on unstable. kmail looks
nice. Thanks to everyone that worked on it.

When I type an address is there a way to have it complete the address when
it finds it fro the keyboard? I hate moveing my hand off he keyboard just
to click on a button.

Is there a way to have it read the ldap database automaticly like netscape
does? The co. that I work for stores all the email names in ldap and we
useually configure the netscape address book to see this and do a search
on it when we are typeing in an address.

Thanks.

Cups after upgrade

I can go into the cups admin interface and print a test page. Cups showes
the printer installed and running idle. Everything looks good that I can
see. I just cannot print.

Any ideas?

You might also make sure that all the cups binaries and libraries are
the same version. At some point in the past I managed to get 1.1.9
cupsys-* packages, but I still had an older libcupsys package. Right
 now I've got:

 ii cupsys-bsd 1.1.9-1.1 BSD comman
 ii cupsys-client 1.1.9-1.1 client programs
 ii libcupsys2 1.1.9-1.1 libs

on my client machine and it works. My server also has the cupsys
 package.

Potato to woody problem

2001-08-20 Thread Brian Schramm
I changed the references in my apt/sources.list to point to woody.

I then did a
apt-get update
apt-get install apt-utils debconf
apt-get dist-upgrade

When I did the apt-get install apt-utils debconf it told me to type Yes,
do as I say! to upgrade the pearl system. I did that and now I keep
getting a perl: error while loading shared libraries: libdb.so.3

How do I get by this?

Have you run update from dselect? If so, then they are probably still
listed in dselect, because the packages from ximian are still installed
on your system. The versions of these packages in the debian archive
are lower I guess, so they are not upgraded.

You can try typing this into a root shell:

  do
apt-get --reinstall install $pkg

 Try:

So, I do not believe that the system is missing anything or else I would

Judging from the output you show below, my guess is
that your machine is missing the kernel sources and
header files. (Yep, that's what it is. modversions.h
 should exist in your /usr/src/linux/include/linux
directory. If you do not have this directory
structure, then you ust create it.)

In a nutshell, here's what might get you compiling:

get the kernel source for your kernel from
ftp.us.kernel.org. You want the version for your new
machine - not your working machine - in case they are
different (use uname -a). Read up on how to compile
a kernel for more detail on installing the tarball on
your working machine (L. Doc. Proj.). You don't
actually need to compile the kernel. All you need to
do is unpack it in the right place with the right
procedure. Once you've got the kernel source
installed, then you can resume building your net
 drivers.

Feel free to continue this discussion on a private
thread. Put MIKE! in the subject line to get my
attention when I scan my email reader.

 Good luck.

Luckily you have another working system attached

   1. load new machine
   2. get netdrivers.tgx from scyld and build
  natsemi.o
   (maybe pci-scan.o too)
   3. put driver .o files on floppy and mount on new
   machine
   4. load .o files to /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/net
   5. configure
   6. reload
   7. enjoy

Re: Problem with netgear card

2001-05-18 Thread Brian Schramm
Ok I am lost. I installed this system that I am running with potato and
2.2.17. I then downloaded the kernel source for 2.2.19 and compiled it the
way I need it for my current system. So, what is this about keeping the
.config file and configuring it the same way that the kernel was configured?
Maybe I am lost but I am not sure what that has to do with me compiling the
extra drivers for the netgear card. Do you mean that I need to compile again
to generate this file?

Thanks for the help.

I never ran mrproper. The last time I did that I had trouble bringing
everything back to a good compile so I don't do that any more. Admittedly,
that was a long time ago and many kernels back.

I have looked in the directory that you said and I have a modversions.h file.
So, I do not know what I can do about this problem.

OK, lets start by assuming you have the kernel source in /usr/src/linux/
When you ran 'make config' (or menuconfig or xconfig, whatever) you
 generated a file /usr/src/linux/.config and
 /usr/src/linux/include/linux/modversions.h modversions.h is the key
file. When you ran 'make mrproper' you deleted both these files (and
whatever else was created by make config).

So in order to create /usr/src/linux/include/linux/modversions.h, you
need to re-run make config. You don't need to re-compile the kernel at
 all.

What I recommend doing is saving a copy of /usr/src/linux/.config, so if
you ever do need to re-generate things like modversions.h in an
idendical configuration as before, you can just put the file in place
 (/usr/src/linux/.config) and run 'make oldconfig'.

Kernel source is not part of the defalt load for Debian. You have to choose

Problem with boot

2000-12-28 Thread Brian Schramm
I am running Potato. I have my kernel customised so I can write to my ide

If I install the kernel from the deb file and tell it to make a boot

that does not work. Can anyone tell me what the difference is and how I
can doplicate the job that the deb package does? I hate to re-install my
kernel just because I needed to change something in lilo.conf.

Re: Problem with boot

2000-12-28 Thread Brian Schramm
What I am talking about is I built the kernel using make-kpkg kernel_image
and that creates a deb file for me to install. The problem is that the
lilo utility at the command prompt does not install right and the mkboot
command from the command prompt does not make a bootable system for me but
the programs that are used when you install the deb file that the above
command makes works with no trouble. I would just like to know the
commands that it uses so I can use it to do the changes when I make them
instead of using the lilo or mkboot commands. I also wanted to point this
problem out so we can get it fixed in the next reliese.

Problem with mail

2000-09-06 Thread Brian Schramm
I am having some problems with my pine system and netscape mail system. I
am running debian potato using the same home directory as I was using in
slink.

Pine:

Pine keeps asking me to save my sent-mail folder into the aug backup
folder every other time I start the program. I do that and it is fine for
that run. Then the next time I start pine it tells me that I need to
delete the aug folder to conserve disk space. I have 250 meg free on that
drive so it should not be concerned with disk space. This is a continues
pattern since the first of this month.

Netscape:

I cannot find any of my folders nor can I delete messages.

Keep in mind that all the mail systems on my system works through imap. I
also have one other user on the system and they are working fine in
netscape. That is the only mail program that they use. Also, keep in
mind that the users are local so there is no diference on the program end
in that way.

Please help.

this and I have not gotten anywhere. I think the xfs is working but that
is one of the error messages.

fh_verify: dev/tty2 permission failure, acc=8, error=30
fh_verify: dev/console permission failure, acc=8, error=30
fh_verify: dev/tty0 permission failure, acc=8, error=30

I have configured everything with the same paramiters (I think) and am

Monitoring program

2000-07-17 Thread Brian Schramm
Is there a program that I can run in Linux that will tell me if there is a
disk in a floppy or a cd in a cdrom drive on a machine? I control
machines remotly and it would be nice to know if someone stuck a disk in a
drive that has the potencial of booting off it so I know if a reboot will
do what I want.

That only works on normal floppies. If I have a boot floppy in there that
was created a special way most systems will not mount them directly. But
they will still boot from them.

I am planing on setting the link up on a 486 running debian striped to

Help with bootp

2000-01-28 Thread Brian Schramm
I am running Debian Slink fully updated. I am working on hooking up an
Xterminal to the network. I am using the bootp server as nothing more
then a nfs server so it does not have bind installed on it. I have my
other machine maped as the firwall, bind, isp conection and home
directory.

I have a very basic configuration in the bootptab file and have tftpd and
bootpd installed in the inet.conf file. For some reason I do not get the
bootp system to even load when I boot the Xterminal. I have even gone as
far as trying to load it from the command line to no success. No error
messages (that I have found) have come up.

I have configured other bootp servers before so I am not a real newbe to

Help with bootp

2000-01-27 Thread Brian Schramm
I am having a problem with bootp on a fully updated Slink system. I try
to access it from my Xterminal and my Xterminal says it is not getting any
ip address. I look (ps aux) at the bootp server and it does not have
bootpd running. So I try to start it from the command line and it does
not start.

I have gone through all the doc that I can find on Bootptab and have the
most basic configuration in it so I figure that I am not doing anything
wrong there. A quick scan through the log files and the daemon.log file
has this in it:
Jan 26 19:02:33 schramms bootpd[1241]: version 2.4.3
Jan 26 19:02:33 schramms bootpd[1242]: bind: Address already in use

I am not sure why this is happening so does anyone have any ideas?

As this seems to be urgent I'm cc-ing to your personal account.
The package netscape4 expects a file like
 communicator-v47-export.x86-unknown-linuxglibc2.0.tar.gz in /tmp an
will install it when you install the package. If you installed your
communicator manually before you should delete all the old files
manually otherwise you should just remove the netscape4 package and
install it again with the right communicator archive in /tmp.
The user specific data should not be affected.

 Hope it helps ...

Sendmail-anything else

1999-07-10 Thread Brian Schramm
I am trying to learn sendmail but it is not working the way I am expecting or
wanting it to. I have tried everything that I can think of to no avail. Maybe
someone can tell me why or maybe I should try something else.

I am running Debian Slink with sendmail running and bind working.

I use multiple mailboxes for my family. Each member has a login account on the
Linux machine. Each member has a permanate forwarding e-mail box on the net so
when I change ISP's I do not have to worry about changing e-mail addresses.
Now what I want is sendmail (read any one like exim, send, et.) to always
re-write the from address to the forwarding e-mail address for that user. I
want to use any client program that I want for the mail program. Like I like
StarOffice for my personal mail and ishmail for my work mail. My wife likes
Netscape for hers. All these programs access the Linux machine for all e-mail
for the user. So my local sendmail sends and receives my mail. I also need to
have a flexible alias system so I can have all accounts receive mail from one
address and they get the private mail from the other accounts no matter what
the name is on the ISP side. The mail pull from the ISP is done through
fetchmail at the root level so I only have one configuration file.

Is anyone running a system like this? Can anyone help me get it set up? I
have tried so many things that this letter would be way too long for anyone to
read if I listed them all here. I am willing to take any suggestions that
anyone has to offer. Even trying something else as long as someone has an idea
as to how this configuration would work.

Thanks.

Bind

So where does your bind gets it's info, if you didn't specify
forwarders (= hosts to ask for entries it doesn't know = your ISP's
DNS servers)? It tries to ask the root servers.

I thought forwaders where for a local network. That is why I did not put any
in.

I believe you have a misconception about the thing you want to setup
and solve. What should your bind cache, and where does it get this info
from? Where did you read about this bind - addressrewriting
 connection?

I got this from the sendmail.org web site. It clames that you need it running
in order to do vurtual hosts and address rerouting. I have tryed to do it
without setting up a bind server and it totally ignores the address changes so
I am adding the bind server to see if they are right.
