at doesn't nice its jobs

1997-04-17 Thread Brian C. White
A previous version of "at" started its at-jobs with a nice of 2 and its
batch-jobs with a nice of 4. The latest doesn't nice at-jobs at all and
only has a nice of 1 on batch-jobs. I quite liked having these jobs
put somewhat in the background. Could this be reinstated?

Also, batch jobs are now started as long as the load is under 1.5 instead
of the previous value of 0.5. I couldn't find anything in the documentation
to explain why.

You can find a really old version of wine in project/experimental.
I have a newer version compiled on my machine and will be uploading

Since Wine isn't really useful as a tool, yet, I haven't been keeping

Excuse me, but this is completely uncalled for and the only true point

It takes forever because they both read the entire file and run every

The latest mime-support (2.12) will work much better with lynx since
it tries to use tests that lynx can recognize internally without forking
an external process.

"dselect" replacement project ("deity")

1997-04-12 Thread Brian C. White
It is my pleasure to announce the formation of the dselect replacement project,
code-named "deity". The project will be made up of the following 7 people:

Project Leader: Brian White <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
 - General organization, dispute resolution, final say on "capabilities"

Chief Programmer: Peter Iannarelli <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
   - Code organization, task breakdown, final say on "code"

Mechanic(*): Jason Gunthorpe <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
 - Low-level class and library design

Dpkg Consultant: Tom Lees <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
 - Expert on compatibility with existing dpkg, dependency algorithms, etc.

Web Designer: Mark Constable <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
 - Work on HTML and CGI interfaces

Chief Designer: Behan Webster <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
- Screen layout, ease of use, final say on "user interface"

Documentation:Che Fox <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
 - high & low level design docs, idea tracking, user manuals

(*) Someone who likes to work on low-level "engines". (I get called this. :-)

A new list "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" has been created with these people
subscribed to it. I'm sure I speak for the whole team when I say that we
would like to hear everybody's ideas for this new tool. As the design
progresses, we will be presenting it back to the devel & user lists for
feedback.

About the people:

* Brian White has been working within the Debian project for about 2 years now
and is current the vice president of engineering. He has 14 years of intense
software development and knows C and C++ very well.

* Peter Iannarelli is fairly new to Debian but is anxious to contribute. He
has 13 years of experience with Unix and C, plus 7 years of C++. He also has
a background in java, motif, and curses, along with strong design and
documentation skills.

* Jason Gunthorpe has 4 years of experience with C/C++ and enjoys working at
the class-level of designs. He has already started working out how some of
the underlying problems can be solved efficiently.

* Tom Lees has experience with C/C++ and has spent time studying the existing
dpkg system. He also has a background in text-mode user interfaces and sgml
documentation.

* Behan Webster has 14 years of experience with C programming and Unix, plus 5
years of C++. He has worked extensively on user interfaces (mostly the
graphical kind) and has a good feel for what is intuitive and easy to use.

* Che Fox is a whiz at linuxdoc-sgml and will be managing the documentation.
He also has experience with Tk interfaces.

* Mark Constable has a good background in web/cgi interaction and will be
working to make that a viable interface.

"dselect" replacement team

1997-04-11 Thread Brian C. White
As part of the facelift for Debian 2.0, I'd like to offer an improved
interface as an alternative for "dselect".

To this end, I'm going to be putting together a team of people to produce
such a product.

If you would like to work on this, please let me know and tell me what
resources you have (machines, expertise, and especially time). Serious
replies, only, please; this will require a fair amount of effort from
all people involved.

The expertise still needed is mostly:
 - gui design
 - technical writing (html; tex,texinfo a plus)
 - multi-lingual

The team will be small; probably 6 people at the most.

Problems with FVWM-2

1997-03-03 Thread Brian C. White
I upgraded to fvwm2 today and ran into a few problems. Some of these may be
worthy of bug reports, but I thought I'd mention them here first.

 - The postinst of fvwm2 fails if you ask it to convert fvwm1 rc files to the
new format and gawk is not present. fvwm2 should either depend on gawk or
the postinst should just ignore this error. The source of the error was
found by trying to run "fvwmrc_convert" by hand.

 - The .fvwm2/init.hook would not be executed unless I added the line

AddToFunc InitFunction

as the end of the .fvwm2/post.hook file. Without this line, it was as
though the init.hook file didn't even exist.

 - When using desktops, a keybinding of

Key F1 A M Desk 0 1
Key F2 A M Desk 0 2
Key F3 A M Desk 0 3
Key F4 A M Desk 0 4
Key F5 A M Desk 0 5
Key F6 A M Desk 0 6
Key F7 A M Desk 0 7
Key F8 A M Desk 0 8

would not work when the mouse was on the root window. I tried other
settings other than "A" and could get none to flip screens unless the mouse
was on top of a window.

I have since switched back to the larger desktop (instead af multiple
desktops) and use the above keybindings with with the "GotoPage" function
   and everything works fine.

 - The FvwmPager does not have the correct aspect ration. Each of the virtual
screens is a long and narrow rectangle instead of a square. The horizontal
scale seems to be about 3/4 of what it was under fvwm1. I have no
reference to compare the vertical scale.

In order for mime-support to work, it requires a specific format of
the mailcap file. I suggest you re-install mime-support and make sure
the distributed /etc/mailcap file gets put into place.

There was some incompatibility between netscape and (I think) metamail.
I'm not sure if it has been fixed, yet.

The startup time problem come from netscape trying every test in mailcap
each time it starts up.

I was hoping to have the proxy set up first so you could also ask them

I agree completely, but we can place on a different list. There are
rankings for email address (chosen when running the program), machine
name (derived from the IP address), and the domain name (also derived
from the IP address).

If we could create a proxy and route all key requests through our
www.debian.org, then that machine would appear, given our current
participation, SECOND on the machine list and THIRD on the domain
list. Because the name "www.debian.org" means web-site, we should
hopefully get quite a few hits to that site!

In addition, anybody looking at the numbers would indicate to everyone
that we are obviously supporting the "linuxnet" address (since at
10.1MKeys/sec, only linuxnet and #root have higher totals).

I'm sure the stats-keeper would transfer our totals to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
and www.debian.org if we asked nicely enough.

The CD Issue

1997-01-22 Thread Brian C. White
I'm just coming into this conversation, so please forgive me while I
get up to speed on this...

As I understand it, Bruce proposed...

 - Debian would have an specific "ultra-stable" CD image that anybody
   could use.

 - Debian would have an "Official" logo which it would let people put
on their CDs if they would sign a contract stating they would give
$2 of the sale of each CD to Debian.

 - A 1-900 help line where people could call for official Debian support.

In response, people said...

 - Debian was becoming Microsoft

 - Debian had abandoned the "free software" idea

Come on, guys! These are just low blows and don't have any weight
behind them.

Bruce's proposal has a lot of merit! Even the FSF _charges_ for its
CDs, tapes, and manuals. As somebody else said, "non-profit" does not
mean "non-income".

Debian is committed to making a high-quality Linux distribution. It's
not commited to public charity. Even the GPL says you can charge anything
you want for the software. You just can't restrict further distribution
of that code.

Bruce, you have my total support for this proposal. I'm sorry I was
not in touch enough to give you the support when you really needed it.

Was this package installed using the Debian package, or by hand? Netscape
probably won't find its app-defaults file without being set up properly.

You can also put something in your .Xresources file or start it with a
command like: 'netscape -geometry 1137x990' (on 1280x1024)

I don't know if netscape can handle more than 8-bits of color. Of course,
if X is running with 16 or 24 bitplanes, netscape will get all colors
that it asks for.

I use fvwm without any problems.

Sorry, but is not "delete" and, though is backspace, it
is not the rubout character.

CTRL-D is an emacs "delete-char" command that is also recognized by bash,
tcsh, and other programs that use enhanced readline. You'll also find
that M-D (ESC-D or ALT-D) is "kill-word" and M-backspace is "backward-
kill-word".

Try the following: 'less ' The try to search for
something by type "/bueue" (with no CR). Then try to backspace to change
the search string.

I think a single floppy install should be possible, but it would require
a different approach than is currently used. I'd like to see an install
package that bootstraps from DOS: 1. insert a DOS boot disk that has some
common CD-ROM drivers, 2. run an install program directly from the CD.

Actually, if you've already got DOS running on your pc, it should be
possible to put in the CD and run a "setup.exe" without ever making a
boot floppy.

I know it's against most of our philosophies to support the use of DOS in
any capacity, but when Caldera releases OpenDOS this could provide a really
nice, fast way to install the system and it would still be free. As it
stands now, we still need DOS to use "rawrite.exe" anyway.

Another alternative (actually my favourite) is to use ELKS (Linux-8086) to
bootstrap regular Linux. Unfortunately it'll be a while before that's
feasible.

Regards...
  ... Ami.

Actually, backspace is not doing the right thing on the command line.
It's just that both bash and tcsh will accept either the BS or DEL
character as a "rubout" command. Ftp, because it uses the GNU
"readline" library will also work.

The problem is that the tty is set to have the DEL code (^?) as rubout
and xterm in X3.2 sends BS (^H). In X3.1, the xterm sent the DEL code.

I really dislike the new code. It makes my network difficult to use.
Previously, I could log into any box on our network (Debian & Solaris)
and have it behave correctly. Now, if I try to run anything from an
xterm or a rlogin/telnet session that doesn't have intelligent readline,
I can't backspace.

Please, PLEASE, correct this! Either set all the ttys to use BS (^H)
as the rubout character or fix xterm to send DEL (^?) when the backspace
key is pressed.

You're right. The names have changed since I last used dselect (a _long_

That is correct. The actual binary is available from ftp://ftp.netscape.com

I mention this briefly before Christmas, but thought I flesh it out a bit
and repeat it...

I think it would be a good idea to add a "Keywords:" line to the control
information for Debian packages. This would be an extension to the
"Section:" field with the section being considered the primary keyword.

A user-interface utility would then allow the user to narrow/expand
the list of package presented. For example:

Sections:

[ ] admin [ ] base[ ] comm[ ] contrib
[ ] devel [ ] doc [ ] editors [ ] experimental
[ ] games [ ] graphic [ ] smail [ ] math
[ ] misc[ ] net [ ] news[ ] nonfree
[ ] shells [ ] sound [ ] text[ ] x11

Keywords: (*) And ( ) Or

[ ] small [ ] graphics[ ] English [ ] French
[ ] sound [ ] internet

(note: I am not suggesting those keywords -- they are examples only)

Maintainers would be able to select their own keywords, but there should
also be a fixed set which should always be given if applicable.

Of course, this is still an "expert" selection system. The should also
be some sort of pre-formed package sets that beginners can install.

I just uploaded "genpower" into unstable in December. I've been using
it on my APC Backups-Pro 420 for several months. It works great!

Included in the docs is a specification for a cable that will detect
power-fail (of course), battery low, and a disconnected cable. It will
also turn off the UPS's inverter after the system halts.

We have an HP DeskJet 850C and it works quite well. Unfortunately, I

Would it be a good idea to make this the default in the distribution?
It seems a better idea to allow individuals to disable a feature than
to tell them how to enable it (as long as it doesn't create any
backward-compatibility issues, which I doubt this does).

I've seen one other case of this. It happened because the /etc/mailcap
was not in the proper format. The latest mime-support package v2.09
(probably only in "bo") checks for this problem but older ones didn't.

I suggest you remove the /etc/mailcap file and reinstall the "mime-support"
package.

None of these are technically supposed to depend on mime-support. They
should only test for its availability before calling the "install-mime"

The international version supports at least 1024 bits. That is the
reason why the US government has been giving Phil Zimmerman (author

I'm not sure about PGP, but DES actually gets _weaker_ if encrypted with
two keys. Three keys does make it much stronger, though, as you say.

Absolutely not. Debian is strong and growing. This entire mess
was actually a bit of a growing pain with different people having
different ideas about what would make Debian the strongest.

There is no cause for concern regarding the future of Debian.

This was completely my fault. I wasn't watching what I typed in the CC
line and typed "debian-user" instead of "debian-devel".

There is a security hole in XFree3.1 that allows any user to get
root access. X3.2 fixes this, but just came out recently. The
discussion on debian-devel was whether it was better to release
Debian 1.2 with X3.1 and a notice about the security problem, or
to delay the release and ship it with X3.2. There are arguements
both ways.

The final decision was to delay and ship with X3.2.

Debian is all of those things. Nothing is ever perfect, though. The

Forgive me for being confused... I agreed to put X3.2 in if that was the
policy you wanted. You then asked my opinion _again_ and said you would
follow my opinion. Please make up your mind. Don't expect people to
change they personal opinion just because they agree to go along with
those of other people.

I never placed my position as "distribution manager" on the line for
this point. I just said that if you didn't want me to do my job, then
say so. This was never a popularity contest between myself and Ian.

However since you have said so, I officially hand in my resignation.
I wish you good luck with Debian in the future.

I also wish you good luck ever getting anyone else to work for you
again. I find it unlikely that anyone will be comfortable in any position
you grant because they know that you will be second guessing them all
the way. There will also be some doubt as to whether it is you or
Ian that actually runs the distribution. You were effectively held
hostage by a threat; whether the demands were reasonable or not is
irrelevant.

I'm sure Guy is also wonderfully happy that you sanctioned Ian's invasion
on his ground (the FTP site).

Actually, as I understand it, "Size" is the size of the debian package

(I originally requested "size" and "md5sum" for sanity checking in dftp.)

Netscape is unable to allocate colors for its display. Try doing
"netscape -ncols 64" and see if the "unable to obtain" erros go
away. If not, try numbers smaller than 64 or close some applications
that are using lots of colors. If the bus error goes away, you should
report this as a bug to Netscape (see "how to give feedback" under the

From "man ftpd"...

Ftpd authenticates users according to three rules.

   1. The user name must be in the password data base, /etc/passwd,
and not have a null password. In this case a password must be
provided by the client before any file operations may be per
formed.

   2. The user name must not appear in the file /etc/ftpusers (see
ftpusers(5)).

   3. The user must have a standard shell returned by
getusershell(3).

   4. If the user name is ``anonymous'' or ``ftp'', an anonymous ftp
account must be present in the password file (user ``ftp'').
In this case the user is allowed to log in by specifying any
password (by convention this is given as the client host's
name).

Hmmm... That's four rules...

'cfengine' actually comes with it's own cron.daily script that also
supports config files stored using RCS or CVS.

Running 'dftp' from that same script will cause problems since it
eventually calls 'dpkg' to do the work and that can require user
input.

'dftp' will run off any mounted filesystem as well as over FTP.

We have the same problem here. I didn't know about the options you
describe. Unfortunately, that would disable all symlinks for the
entire Debian distribution unless you get "unstable" separately.
This is not too difficult to do, luckily.

Mark Burgess (author of cfengine) replies:

Hei. I think you have misunderstood. Cfengine will perform all the
actions for defined classes. If it is not doing so, I would guess that
there is some kind of misunderstanding going on. You could try to follow
the voluminous output from the -d2 flag which gives debugging info,
or -v for verbose to see whether all the classes you think are defined
really are.

Otherwise, I would definitely upgrade to 1.3.16 (Brian!) It has some
nice new features and a few bug fixes, which might just help...

good luck!

BTW: there are now two cfengine newsgroups whcih have finally started
working:

   gnu.cfengine.help
   gnu.cfengine.bug

best regards,
Mark

That would be because there is no "CGI-modules". There is only

I believe that CGI-modules was the last of the packages with uppercase

I start netscape like this:

netscape -geometry 1137x990+3840+1024 -ncols 64

Every new window it starts has those dimensions. The large offsets
cause it to come up in a different virtual desktop since the above
command is run in my .xsession. The offsets have no effect on additional
windows.

You can probably also add some lines like:

Netscape*geometry: 1137x990

to you .Xresources file.

You can find out what has installed itself into /etc/mailcap by running
the command:

Netscape is slow because it runs all the test conditions at startup.
It runs them incorrectly, too, thus causing many of the test conditions
to fail.

Removing them from /etc/mailcap is not a solution. The next time a package
installs itself there, that file will be regenerated with all the lines
intact.

The 3.0 version of the netscape installer has been in contrib since

The netscape package is available under contrib.

To use the existing XKeysymDB file, either compile the app with the correct
directory or set the env var:

csh:setenv XKEYSYMDB /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XKeysymDB
bash: set XKEYSYMDB="/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XKeysymDB"; export XKEYSYMDB

Netscape runs _fine_ if you use the Debian installer package! Actually,
all you really need to do is point it to the existing XKeySymDB file.

This probably the case for other Motif apps, too.

There is a netscape installer for v3.0 under "contrib". You will still

Did you install netscape using the Debian package or by hand? Using

No it isn't. Rex is intended to be release 1.2 of Debian. "Unstable" is
the latest stuff and will be pointing to "bo" in the near future. Because
of the problems that have been claimed against the new libc5, I don't see
any reason to include it in Debian 1.2. There isn't time to force
everyone to recompile for that release. That can take place in "bo".

You don't need to call "efix". The "fax" script will do it for you.

Try:fax send 123-4567 file.txt

You can also fax a postscript file this way. The "fax" script will
run it through ghostscript first.

If you prefer to convert your files to group-3 files first, you can
use:

fax make file.txt
fax send file.txt.*

Note that while "fax send ..." will accept multiple filenames on the line,
"fax make ..." will only accept one.

Yes, but it is a bug with netscape. You should report this directly
to netscape and tell them to compile against a later version of libc.

You can do this directly from netscape by selecting "How to give feedback"
under the "Help" menu.

We maintain a small network of Debian machines here, but have no master
install script. We just run 'dftp' on each and select the packages
we want.

I suppose that if all machines had identical packages, you could just
run 'dftp' once and then copy the ".selected" file around to each
machine (or share it somehow) and call 'dftp --unpack'.

To manage config files and the like, we use "cfengine". It takes a while
to get the hang of and set up properly, but once done it really is a life
saver. To build a new machine, we install the desired packages, edit the
/etc/cron.daily/cfengine file to turn on CVS, and then run that script.
Voila! We have another fully configured system that exactly matches all
the others.

Right. This is exactly what 'dftp' allows. It brings up all packages
that it finds and allows the user to choose what to do. If 'dftp'
brings up two instances of ghostscript, the user just selects one
and/or deselects the other.

I agree. As long as dpkg will never install more than over version of
a given package (it would at one point), the current solution is fine.

It does make the distinction, though it may not be immediately obvious.
Because the full path to the package is listed, the first component of
that path is the distribution under which it was found (i.e. stable,
unstable, contrib, non-free).

I've had problems with 'msqld' not starting due to permission and ownership
problems on the various msql directories. Perhaps running it as root avoids
those problems. I believe it runs as 'msql' when started at bootup.

Try purging the package and then manually deleting all directories that
dpkg couldn't. Sometimes there are extra files around that don't allow
directories to be removed, and if they are not deleted then the re-install
won't change the permissions/ownership.

Then, re-install it from scratch.

I was just thinking the same the other day. I have some scripts that
created a 3-disk set (boot, root, & utils) to do just this, but they
were from when I originally installed Debian 0.93 and I'm _sure_ they
would die by the 3rd line, now.

Between the root & utils disk, I had tar, gzip, fsck, tcsh (yes, I like
my csh), mke2fs, and all the useful stuff with libs I could cram on 2 disks.

I would be happy to provide them if anyone wants to undertake such a
responsibility. They need work to convert them for use with shared
libs to make sure all necessary shared libs also got copied to disk.

I'd have to say, though, that this ties quite closely with building base
disks and would probably be best for that maintainer to take over.
