Write a script or figure out the command to do the action you want. 2. Run ccsm. 3. Enable the Commands plugin 4. In the Commands settings, fill in the command line you want and bind it to key Super+P. Now Unity will run your specified command on Super+P, but still handle the Super key as usual. [Precise SRU Justification] [Impact] Any shortcut with Super, Hyper, Meta virtual modifiers does not work [Test Case] Attach an external monitor to the laptop, press Super+P, it should do the video switch as this function is implemented in gnome-settings-daemon. [Regression Potential] The patch is accepted upstream and is also cherry-picked in the gnome-3-4 branch of g-s-d git tree. g-s-d version in Precise is 3.4.2. So the risk of regression should be rather low. [Other] I prepare a debdiff in comment #31 for convenience. I hope the patch can be in both Quantal and Precise. E.g., *including a comment in /etc/hosts that explains the change* and how to work around it would have saved me a lot of time. It would have automatically alerted me on upgrade as manual changes to /etc/hosts would then have triggered a prompt while leaving those users with standard /etc/hosts in peace. jerico wrote: I've got no instance of dnsmasq running and entries in /etc/hosts are respected when e.g. letting Firefox (or any other application I've access to) resolve URLs. Yes, that is because the libc resolver consults /etc/hosts without doing a DNS lookup. AFAIK /etc/hosts is in not directly linked to dnsmasq and it doesn't matter whether DNS lookups are done externally or not. The standalone dnsmasq (i.e., the dnsmasq that runs when the dnsmasq package is installed) does consult /etc/hosts when resolving names. This feature can be disabled. The hosts mechanism is much older than dnsmasq. That's true. [...] IMO it is most unusual for a Linux distribution to provide a default configuration that does not respect /etc/hosts. That would be highly unusual. Ubuntu is not unusual in this respect. In Ubuntu 12.04 /etc/nsswitch contains hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns mdns4 thus for host name lookups the libc resolver looks first at /etc/hosts. Try this yourself. Add the line 1.2.3.4 foo to /etc/hosts and then try ping foo. $ ping foo PING foo (1.2.3.4) 56(84) bytes of data. ^C ** Changed in: network-manager (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed = Opinion -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to network-manager in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/993298 Title: Please make NetworkManager-controlled dnsmasq respect /etc/hosts Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu: Opinion Bug description: Since 12.04 NetworkManager uses the dnsmasq plugin by default to resolve DNS requests. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1026026] [NEW] The application xpdf launches and then closes immediately
Public bug reported: I am a first-time user using a new, clean installation of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (installed on the day of its release) and have installed all of the recommended updates as they have become available since. I attempted to use the apt-cache policy pkgname command without success. Even so, it's a great system! When I attempt to use xpdf to view or print a PDF document, the application flashes on the screen, attempting to open and then disappears. A minute or so later I receive the error-message that I have taken screenshots of and will attempt to append to this report. The error-message on screen intrigues me because it tells me there is a bug and asks me if I wish to report it but gives me no CONTINUE option. I am relatively new to Ubuntu and am not as up-to-speed as I would like to be but, after using Mepis for many years, I love its simplicity and user-friendliness, so am keen to do what I can to solve any problems I encounter. [07:50] seb128 micahg, need to, I don't know but they follow the GNOME cycle and I would not be surprised if i.e epiphany requires 1.9 [07:53] micahg seb128: ok, thanks, if you don't get to it by next week, I might take a look at syncing/merging 1.8.1 from unstable (would prefer you do it though :)) [07:54] seb128 micahg, does it mean you prefer not to go for 1.9? why? [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1026059] [NEW] Progress bar in splash screen is orange instead of upstream white
Public bug reported: I'm testing LibreOffice 3.6 RC1 from the LibreOffice pre-releases PPA. This version features a new, green splash screen with a white progress bar. The Ubuntu builds have instead an orange progress bar, and while this worked well with the previous splash screen, now it looks really ugly and out of place. Please remove the patch to ubuntify the splash screen. If Ubuntu wants to customize LibreOffice branding, let's instead do a complete change to the splash screen and not just the progress bar, that's odd IMHO. ** Affects: libreoffice (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to libreoffice in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1026059 Title: Progress bar in splash screen is orange instead of upstream white Status in “libreoffice” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: I'm testing LibreOffice 3.6 RC1 from the LibreOffice pre-releases PPA. It would have been better if the old standard theme remains untouched, and a new theme would have been created for the new blackwhite pictograms. See attached screenshot for the weird icons. Adolfo Jayme Barrientos, thank you for taking the time to report this bug and trying to help make Ubuntu better. Your position is too subjective and brief for this to be moved forward as is. As well, such a change would need further discussion and review before any action taken towards it. While I wont action this as is, it raises a valid point and needs to be considered. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1025935] Re: Thunderbird 14.0 scrollbars have a wrong background [regression]
On my system, the scrollbars are unusable because the slider is the same colour as the background. ** Changed in: network-manager (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed = Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to network-manager in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/489357 Title: NetworkManager fails to ignore wlan0 which has been configured in /e/n/i Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: I had set up in Ubuntu 9.04 a network config fixed at /etc/netwrking/interfaces in a PC acting as a home printer server SO that users just have to switch ON the machine to access the server printer and shared folders but do not need to log in as any user. All WAS working over a wlan interface (wlan0) on Ubuntu 9.04 Once I upgraded to 9.10, the network became unstable, disconnected most of the time. I have seen the logs at /var/log/syslog and the problems SEEMS to be that NetworkManager is NOT ignoring wlan0 interface as it should because it is being listed in /etc/network/interfaces and should be managed manually ONLY. The connection is unstable because NetworkManager is competing with /etc/init.d/networking to manage the device. Once I remove the config at /etc/network/interfaces, NetworkManager has the device for itself and manages to give me stable connections. How can I force NetworkManager TO IGNORE wlan0? Shoud I deinstall it completelly? A Nokia N810 running meamo linux, and an HP running Kubuntu 9.10. Over the course of an hour, the Ubuntu 9.10 system drops network connection on an average of 8-30 times. The higher the transfer rate, the more drops occur. The connection is usually reestablished within 5 seconds. During the same hour the maemo linux system never drops network connection. After trying several solutions found on the internet, with no success, I replaced network-manager with wicd 1.6.1-3ubuntu1. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 508180] Re: Network manager takes down wireless router at startup
This must be (have been) a problem with the router or a hardware problem. ** Changed in: network-manager (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed = Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to network-manager in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/508180 Title: Network manager takes down wireless router at startup Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu: Invalid Bug description: Binary package hint: network-manager After upgrade to Ubuntu 9.10, the wireless network often doesn't work after the computer is started, restarted, or waken up from standby. The worst thing is that the wireless router/ADSL modem is affected, so that a wire-connected desktop, using Windows on the same router looses internet access too. When a hardware WLAN switch button is pressed on my laptop, so that WLAN is turned off, the other computer regains internet access after a little while. The failure occurs in 25 to 75 % of start attempts (my guess). If the network connection is successful, it will remain so, until the computer is restarted or set in standby for a while. When the failure occurs, a click is heard from the ADSL box; probably a relay. I haven't found anything in the log of the ADSL box that looks suspicious. When the failure occurs, there is rotating symbol in the notification area, declaring attempts to reconnect. The SSID of the Wlan AP is mentioned. I suppose this is from network-manager-applet. I don't know which log files in the computer to look for strange things. ADSL WLAN modem/router: Thomson SpeedTouch 780. Computer: HP Compaq nx7000, using intel ipw2100 for WLAN. CPU: Centrino. OS: Ubuntu 9.10 network-manager: 0.8~a~git.20091013t193206.679d548-0ubuntu1 I have mostly used Gnome, but have seen the same problem in KDE, I think. *** This bug is a duplicate of bug 943195 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/943195 Thank you for taking the time to report this crash and helping to make this software better. This particular crash has already been reported and is a duplicate of bug #943195, so is being marked as such. Please look at the other bug report to see if there is any missing information that you can provide, or to see if there is a workaround for the bug. Additionally, any further discussion regarding the bug should occur in the other report. Please continue to report any other bugs you may find. ** Package changed: gnome-control-center (Ubuntu) = xpdf (Ubuntu) ** This bug has been marked a duplicate of bug 943195 xpdf.real crashed with SIGSEGV in GooHash::hash() -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1026026 Title: The application xpdf launches and then closes immediately Status in “xpdf” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: I am a first-time user using a new, clean installation of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (installed on the day of its release) and have installed all of the recommended updates as they have become available since. I have taken two screenshots of the entire error message and attempted to append them to this report but it appears that I can append only one of them. I have attached the first page but can send the second subsequently, if you think it necessary. ** Attachment added: screenshot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1026090/+attachment/3227108/+files/layout.png ** Description changed: Ubuntu Software Center 5.2.4, Ubuntu 12.04 The top of USC's software item screen is unattractive. + https://launchpadlibrarian.net/110380605/layout.png To see this problem, go to http://apt.ubuntu.com/p/snorms for example. There are always at least five elements in this area: a. Icon for the application/package. b. Title (application name or package synopsis), usually four words or fewer. c. Summary or tagline, usually ten words or fewer. d. Price, often Free; or, if already installed, the text Installed and the date it was installed. e. Button labelled Install, Install…, Buy…, or Remove, depending on the situation. Occasionally there are additional elements: f. A banner warning you that the item may be inappropriate: for example, This software requires a CD drive, but none are currently connected. g. Text for a package you've downloaded outside USC, Install this item only if you trust its origin. Currently this replaces the price, because USC has no idea whether or how much you paid for it. So, what are the problems? 1. The contents of the price+button banner, and (when present) the warning banner, are flush with the left and right edges of their colored backgrounds. This is ugly. We could fix this by adding some left and right padding inside, but then the text would no longer line up with the package description below it. Would that matter? Maybe, maybe not. We could fix that too, by adding padding to the package description as well, but then the overall description area would be further away from the edges of the window than the banner areas are. Would that matter? Maybe, maybe not. 2. The price and warning banners are rather unattractive in themselves. In particular, they have no vertical borders, but dotted horizontal borders and a background color. These don't seem to go well together. 3. The Install/Install…/Buy button is far away from the price -- and the wider the window is, the further apart they are. Originally this was for semi-consistency with list views of multiple results (where we have a More Info button at the left end, and an Install button at the right end), but we want to reduce our use of list views anyway. One possibility for fixing this would be to put the button on the left side, with the price/installed text immediately to its right. These three problems would be best solved all at once by a graphic designer. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to software-center in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1026090 Title: Top of software item screen is unattractive Status in “software-center” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: Ubuntu Software Center 5.2.4, Ubuntu 12.04 The top of USC's software item screen is unattractive. https://launchpadlibrarian.net/110380605/layout.png To see this problem, go to http://apt.ubuntu.com/p/snorms for example. As far as I know, yes. I tested on a Ubuntu 12.04 guest in VirtualBox on Windows 7, without the Guest Additions installed. So, even though I only verified this behavior in the Mouse panel, I cannot confirm that it is exclusive to it. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1023459 Title: Tabbed dialogs in System Settings with one tab should hide the tab bar Status in “gnome-control-center” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: The dialogs in System Settings should not show the tab bar when there's only one tab available, even if the dialog is expandable and can show more than one tab. This is the case with the Mouse and Touchpad dialog in System Settings, for example, where if there is only a mouse available and no touchpad, there's only one tab shown, which honestly doesn't look nice, in my opinion. *** This bug is a duplicate of bug 583308 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/583308 ** This bug has been marked a duplicate of bug 583308 NM sometimes disables Wi-Fi interface and the only way to re-enable it is to delete NetworkManager.state and reboot -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to network-manager in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/577044 Title: Crash in resume leaves network disabled Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Binary package hint: pm-utils Closing laptop lid on a Lenovo W500 running Kubuntu Lucid (10.04 LTS) causes a suspend/resume cycle. As the resume often crashes, the machine must often be manually killed (hard power off) and restarted. When this is done, the network does not resume (KDENetworkManager reports the networking as unmanaged). The only way I've found to restore it so far is to attempt another suspend/resume cycle (which may or may not require another hard reboot). Likely on startup the suspend/resume config/setting which disables networking during suspend/resume should be cleared out. Mostly just a nuisance, as we know not to intentionally suspend the machine, but it's definitely annoying. When I try to connect through this mode, the system displays an error and the connection is not established. Alternatively I am using pppeoconf via terminal to connect me to the internet. This option works perfectly in version 9.04, but from the 9:10 did not work anymore and this bug remains since then. How can I make the following connection mode work? Configure ADSL in graphical mode: 1. Click the right mouse button on the network icon near the clock, go to Edit connections or System - Preferences - Network Configuration (Internet Config). 2. Click on the DSL Add, now select the System Configuration, and if you want to auto-connect, also check Connect automatically. 3. Username - Enter in the e-mail from your broadband provider. 4. Service - Put the name of your carrier (velox, speed etc) or any other name. 5. Password - The password for your ISP broadband. OK, ask if the root password, type it and press OK again. To connect, just click on the Network icon with the left mouse button and click on the name of your connection set up, or reboot the system to auto-connect. Restarting Ubuntu, restarting the wifi radio using the hardware keys, or restarting the wifi radio by using the EeePC Tray would sometimes work. Now in Lucid this problem is no longer sporadic but present upon every system boot. To get it to work now, I have to boot to windows XP, turn the wifi radio on and off using the keyboard shortcut, then connect to the wifi network, then restart into ubuntu and turn the wifi on and off with the keyboard shortcut, and then sometimes it works. If that doesn't work, I try to turn the wifi on and off again using keyboard shortcut, the eeepc tray, and restart /etc/init.d/networking. Sometimes this works. I have tried installing wicd and madwifi-ng but this hasn't affected the problem.
