JBCNConf 2022

2022-02-16 Thread Ignasi Barrera
Hi!

I am helping the organization of the JBCNConf [1], the biggest Java
conference in Spain, happening in person this July after two years doing it
virtually due to the pandemic.

Even though it's not a small event (last in-person event was 3 days and had
+700 attendees), it is a 100% non-profit event put together by the
Barcelona Java User Group, and this year we want to foster the community
values by having a strong presence of OSS foundations in the conference.

This is an excellent opportunity to educate about our mission and engage
with the user communities, and the JBCNConf would like to offer a free
booth to the ASF.

Is this something we could be interested in? If so, would anyone like to
volunteer to staff the booth, or what is the best way to coordinate to make
it happen?

Thank you!

Ignasi

Re: [TIME SENSITIVE] ASF at OpenExpo/Madrid?

2019-04-24 Thread Ignasi Barrera
Given that there has been no feedback in the other thread apart from mine,
I think we are not going to be there this year.

The event has a clear focus on business and open source is becoming kind of
a marketing vehicle for them. As I said before if this event becomes a
truly relevant one, I think it would make sense for us to be there and
share our vision on open source, but it is still far from being there.
There is still some value in being there sharing our vision and explaining
what the ASF is, as there was quite a lot of people coming to the booth in
the past editions, but I don't think it is worth the effort for a single
person given how the event is shaped today. At least I don't see _just
myself_ the entire day staying at the booth answering "why is the ASF in
this event?" and similar questions.

Re: Are we participating at OpenExpo Europe this year?

2019-04-09 Thread Ignasi Barrera
Hi!

I have contradictory feelings about this event. On the one hand, the main
focus of the event is purely business. The main activities are around
business development and a big part of the focus is on company booths,
showing their "open source" projects. From our involvement last year, it
looked like they were trying to make it more open and more focused on real
open source, but I'm not sure that is for real or not. On the other hand,
if this event becomes a popular and well-accepted event, probably it makes
sense for us to be there, especially if we are offered a booth.

I can be the primary point of contact; I did it last year and it went quite
well. However, I wouldn't like to be the only one supporting this event. If
I have to staff the booth myself all day, then, I would probably say that's
something I honestly wouldn't like to do given the nature of this event.

Re: JBCNConf Request for Community Partnership

2019-02-12 Thread Ignasi Barrera
Please, s/Ignaci/Ignasi/

I've been talking to Jonathan too. As a not-for-profit event, they really
wanted to have some open source community presence there, and they came up
with this new proposal to see if that would make sense for Apache.

Just to be clear, I'm not mad at anyone, nor I'm unhappy with your
declining to put money into this event. I fully understand the reasons and
I'm the kind of person that understands a no. I was disappointed by how the
conversations here, inside the ASF, were broken and became a real blocker
to shaping a proper collaboration plan. But that doesn't mean I'm mad at
anyone or that I take things personally. I am (and will be) always open to
talk to anyone so please, don't project that image of me, especially on a
public list.

This said, I felt bad about the poor communication experience we initially
delivered to them, and I offered to join their volunteer group and give a
hand on the organization of the event, so although I will be there, I can't
commit to staffing the booth full-time. I'll be more than happy to help
with the logistics, setting it up (I also still have some stickers and a
feather rollout, if we are allowed to use it), and being there at the booth
when time allows, but I can't commit to staffing it full-time.

Regarding Twitter, I'd suggest we promote any talk that is about an Apache
project, even if the speaker is not an Apache contributor. The event will
have high-profile speakers and lots of Java Champions, and IMO having
Apache related talks there is a great way to put the projects on the radar
of cool and relevant technologies today (my $0.02 with this regard).

You can count on my help, taking into account the mentioned limitations.

I.

P.S. I also submitted a talk, although it is not related to Apache

OpenExpo 2019 Ebook collaboration

2018-11-16 Thread Ignasi Barrera
Hi!

We have been invited to participate again in the OpenExpo Ebook. We had a
bunch of people who participated in last year's edition and it would be
great if we could make it again this year.

If anyone is interested in participating and write a bit about the use and
trends of open source, please let me know. You'll find the details attached
below.

Deadline is pretty tight, the texts should be submitted by *November 26th*.
Apologies for the short notice, it's entirely my fault. I'm a bit
overloaded recently and the email from the OpenExpo organizers got stuck in
my reading queue for longer than I'd like.

If anyone wants to participate let me know!

Thanks,

Ignasi

---

We are preparing a new edition of the ebook on Trends - now 2019 - in the
Open Source world and, of course, we want you to be part of it. We´d like
you to participate and also to recommend profiles from the Foundation for
us that you think could be interested in collaborating.

I leave all the information for you to look at it and tell me something:

This time, the ebook will gather the points of view of 100 professionals of
the sector and we want to constitute it as a reference document.

It is the third consecutive year in which this publication is made - with
the status and trends in Free and Open Source. (You can -re-consult here
the 2018 edition
)
Last year it reached more than 10,000 downloads and it is also promoted at
the event.

We would like very much to count on your participation this year.

What do I need in particular?

   - The texts - between 200 and 250 words - that reflect your point of
view on the use of Free and Open Source in your sector and three trends
that you think will mark the future of it in 2019. I leave you below a
capture of the index of the ebook with all the sections and sectors so you
can choose which one to participate in. We will recommend you to
participate in the Global Visions sector but anyway, if you prefer another
   one, that's perfect too.
   - Autor photo, with good resolution.
   - Autor name, as you want it to appear in the publication.
   - Position.
   - Company.
   - Twitter and LinkedIn user.

I would need to have it all by the latest on *11/26*.

These are the sections/sectors. In addition to the ones you will see in the
image we will include two more you will see below:

   - Global Visions of the future. With more global contributions that talk
about the future in the world of FOSS.
   - OpenCompanies. For more transversal contributions on the use of FOSS
in the processes of digital transformation in companies.

The initiative has two main objectives:

   - Promote the use of FOSS and comment a little -by sectors- what uses
are being given and what are the main trends that mark the future.
   - Constitute the document as a reference in the sector.

Tell me what you think and if we count on you :)

It would also be awesome if someone comes to the Madrid event too. I'm
staffing the booth there but I'm also giving a talk, so it would be
great if someone could take care of it for the duration of my talk :)

Yes, I'm stepping up to do that and to be the primary contact between
JBCNConf and the ASF.
And I'll be happy to take the tasks and responsibilities to make it happen
and coordinate with you, this list, and Jonathan.

Hi!

I also think it is a great initiative, and JBCNConf is a great conference.
Collocating TomcatCon or the EU roadshow could be great idea.
I'm based in Barcelona and would be more than happy to help make this

Thanks for sharing the initiative, PJ!

I can help to staff the booth at the Madrid event, so count on me to
coordinate that if needed. I can do some talks about open source, the
Apache way, or cloud too.

Re: Apache Booth and Talks at OpenExpo Madrid

2018-06-08 Thread Ignasi Barrera
Hi!

This is a summary of our impressions these days at OpenExpo, so we can use
them as a starting point for a post on the ComDev blog.

I would say the general perception is that it was a great event, with many
people stopping by to talk to us and interested in knowing more about the
ASF.
Although it is more a business-oriented event than a pure open source one,
there are several initiatives that are great, such as having open spaces in
the venue to give open talks so anyone around can participate, a startup
hub connecting projects and ideas, and lots of spaces for networking,
workshops, and hackathons.

We talked to many people interested in a wide variety of projects, people
that just approached to say thank you for our labor, and people that just
wanted to know more and understand how the ASF works internally. We also
had some conversations with people from other open source circles that
could help us in community outreach: we've been offered to record a podcast
again this year (in Spanish, though), and PJ also discussed an opportunity
to improve the promotion of the ASF in Italy.

Regarding our talks, we did an open debate about the challenges projects
face when going open source. The idea of the open debate was great, but it
could have been better if the organization had arranged the space
differently. It was right in the center of the venue, where anyone could
stop by, attend and participate; the idea was great, but the
"implementation" could be improved. Anyway, this is the first year they are
trying this kind of open talks, and I guess they'll improve it as they get
feedback from participants. The other talk, Ismaël's one, got a lot of
interest and he had a full room of people interested in knowing about The
Apache Way. There were also several technical talks about Apache projects
done by pure users and consumers of those projects, which is also great.

In general, our perception is that it is an event worth our presence, as we
have many opportunities to better explain to people what we do, who we are,
and how companies and communities can benefit from open source and
collaborate to make the ecosystem better.

These have been a couple funny days. Thank you very much to Ismaël, PJ, and
Luciano for being so kind and helping a lot at the booth, and to
everyone (especially
Sharan) that helped us with the organization.

Cheers,

I.

Re: Who's responding to the "Help with task" emails?

2018-05-01 Thread Ignasi Barrera
I agree, some of the emails look just like spam, others look proper help
requests.

We have replied several of these emails, with details on how to contribute
and the next steps, but unfortunately none (AFAIK) of the responses has
received feedback or has been continued.

Often one of the very first steps we mention is to subscribe to a project
mailing list and start participating, and I guess that might be some kind
of "too much" for someone that just wants to fix some websites, etc. I
understand newcomers willing to help not seeing value in that, initially.
It is legit to ask, as that is how the ASF works, and it is how communities
communicate and the channel they use to operate, so helping a
project/community would need interaction in the mailing list at some point,
but perhaps it could just not be the very first step for a contributor
(although highly recommended).

Honestly, the feedback and engagement loop of the help wanted system could
be improved, but Idespite having thought about it I haven't had yet any
good idea to bring to this list.

Suggestions (and even more patches) are very welcome!

I.

Thanks for your interest!

The best way to start helping with this is by picking a project and
fixing its website if needed, then move to another one. You will find
the complete list of projects here:
https://projects.apache.org/projects.html
For each project listed there, you'll find all details and the link to
its website.

Once you've found a project site that needs to be improved, you'll
have to talk to the project's community to see how changes can be
applied to the site. All Apache projects use mailing lists for
communication and you'll find all the project lists here:
lists.apache.org
Send an email to the project's mailing list asking for pointers on how
to edit the site, and consider subscribing to the list to be up to
date with the feedback and replies. You'll find a convenience
"subscribe" button at the bottom of each project's mailing list page.

The task aims to check all project sites and this can be
time-consuming. Just start with one project, dive into its site, and
have fun contributing back to the community. And if you need help
don't hesitate to ask the project's list or talk to us here. We'll be
happy to help!

Hi!

The OpenExpo Europe 2018 call for papers is now open. If you want to
submit a proposal for a talk you can do it here:

Please, note that the deadline is March 18th (just one week to submit
a summary of the talk!), so if you plan to submit a talk, do it as
soon as possible.

I apologize for the late announcement and its inconvenience but we
were monitoring it and have been notified of the C4P opening just
right now.

Re: [REQUEST] Speakers and Volunteers for OpenExpo Europe 2018 Madrid

2018-02-05 Thread Ignasi Barrera
Hi!

I had a phone call with the organizers of the Expo and concreted most
of the details about the spaces, talks, etc. Here are the relevant
bits to the ASF participation in the event:

* We've been offered to do a Keynote in English (30-45 min), in a room
for ~400 people capacity.
* A 30 minutes talk, in Spanish in a room for ~60/70 people.
* A 30 minutes debate (preferably in Spanish but English is OK) in an
open space. This space has no projector, etc. It is more for an open
debate and Q/A.

These three are pre-arranged talks for the ASF, but there will be a
Call for Papers where talk proposals can be submitted by anyone
interested in participating.

As discussed with them, it would be awesome if the Keynote and talk
could be about the ASF itself, the Apache Way, and about how to apply
the Apache Way principles to the corporate world. One of the things we
detected last year is that people were familiar with different Apache
projects but many didn't even know there was a foundation behind them,
so it would be good to explain who we are, where we come from and what
we do.

The incubation and mentoring topics we talked about could be good
candidates for the open debate and Q/A: challenges to face when
starting an OSS project, how to build a community, OSS strategies,
etc.

I'll be happy to do the Spanish talk. We need one volunteer for the
Keynote and at least another for the debate.

Thank you all!

I.

P.S. I'll share further details on the call for papers as soon as I have them.

Re: Easier way to start contribution

2018-01-11 Thread Ignasi Barrera
Hi Sagir,

Welcome to the Apache community!

The best way to start contributing is to find a project that interests
you. There are a lot of projects in the foundation, so there are
plenty of options and places where you could help. My recommendation
is that you get familiar with a project, even better if it is one you
already use, look at some of its issues in the issue tracker, present
yourself in the project's mailing list, and ask the community what is
the best way for a newcomer to help.

Here you'll find some tips:

Hi Gimhana,

Thanks for your interest and welcome to the Apache Community!

You will find a lot of documents and tutorials to get started to begin
contributing to Apache on the ComDev website:
http://community.apache.org/

There is also our help wanted page, where you will find tasks you can take
to start participating in some of our communities:
https://helpwanted.apache.org/

Apart from that, I would recommend you took a look at some projects that
might interest you, and subscribe to their mailing lists and ask how you
can help. You can see the list of projects, classified by programming
language here:
https://projects.apache.org/projects.html?language

Re: Apache Community Card Volunteers Needed

2017-11-16 Thread Ignasi Barrera
Hi!

I've just ordered some cards to test the process.

* The signup process is very easy, and the landing page where you can
edit business cards is very intuitive.
* Editing the design is also super-easy.
* There are lots of options for the paper quality (which is good), and
although at a first glance this can leave you with a lot of doubts of
what to select, their help is great and every quality is described
properly.
* I had no problems checking out and adding different addresses.

I'd say the whole process is smooth and super-easy, and being able to
save the designs to edit them later is great too.

Re: Tracking Someone's First Contribution

2017-11-09 Thread Ignasi Barrera
Right.

We usually ask for a twitter handle and if they're ok with us tweeting
about the contribution because you "officially" only have, at most, a
contributor email.
That small conversation asking to publicly thank them for the
contribution has been always very positive and very well received, and
that also counts on project engagement.

Re: Tracking Someone's First Contribution

2017-11-09 Thread Ignasi Barrera
I think it is a great way to encourage people to contribute.

In Apache jclouds we always tweet about new contributors and also
about significant contributions made to the code base. We've found
this always motivates the contributor.
We also have a "Credits" section in our release notes pages for all
those new and significant contributors, as a recognition for their
effort and help with the project.

Re: Regarding proceeding for GSoC

2017-11-02 Thread Ignasi Barrera
Hi,

Your starting point should be the GSoC website. There you will find
all the information you need regarding the program and how it works.
If you want to participate by contributing to an Apache project, then
I'd recommend you read this: http://community.apache.org/gsoc.html

Apache projects usually tag JIRA issues with "gsoc2017", etc, so when
GSoC is about to begin it is a good idea to have a look there to
identify possible projects you might be interested in and see if there
are any proposals, although you are free to propose your own project
to the community!

BTW, in order to generate the single file, in the README I explain how to
generate the PDF files for the inside and outside using the "Print to pdf file"
option.
Once you have the two files, you can join them (rotating the pages if needed)
easily with any PDF modification tool. PDFsam is an open source one that can be
used in all platforms: http://pdfsam.org/
You can replace the last sentence in the README that refers to OSX by a link to
this tool, so anyone can easily download and use it to produce the proper PDF.

Thanks [~sharan]!

I think it would make sense to move there the attachments from the wiki page,
and update the links in the wiki to point to SVN. This way we'll have only one
canonical version and everything up to date.

I'd propose a folder structure per language, such as:

{{/comdev/marketing/brochure/en}}
{{/comdev/marketing/brochure/es}}
etc.

And in each folder the GIMP source files and the resulting PDFs, to have
everything in one single place.

WDYT?

Hi!

Good to see this initiative :)

I would be happy to help and mentor in general too, so count on me!
In Apache jclouds we've completed a couple successful GSoC projects with
students from Galicia. If you're interested in a cloud project, I would be
happy to help there too.

Podcast about the ASF - Open Expo Madrid

2017-06-27 Thread Ignasi Barrera
Hi!

This is just a brief follow-up of our presence at Open Expo, Madrid.

As part of our presence in the Open Expo this June, we got in touch
with a local Spanish podcast about GNU/Linux and free software in
general. They came to us interested in knowing more about the ASF and
were keen on recording some podcasts about the foundation.

It was a good opportunity to spread the word about the foundation in
Spain, and we've recently recorded a podcast (in Spanish) that is now
live at:
https://compilando.audio/index.php/2017/06/19/podcast-7-fundacion-apache-con-ignasi-barrera-y-el-cumpleanos-de-tux/

Feel free to tweet or promote the link if appropriate, although it is
in Spanish.

I expect to keep collaborating with them and to have more chances to
expand on who we are and what we do.

Let me just mention something said up-thread, about the ASF being about
voluntary software... It is, but is even more about communities. One of the
most important core values of the ASF is "community over code". Communities
come first, and the ASF, as a foundation, just sets the principles on top
of which communities should be developed. It does not take part on nor
control the software they produce. It is just the output of healthy
communities that happen to produce software.

Those that understand the ASF and why community over code is important will
probably agree that understanding the nature of our communities is an
important factor in determining how healthy they are and how the
foundation, as a whole, can do better to improve them. And itself.
Diversity is key in that regard, and this is the right list to develop this
kind of efforts.
