My data says that in the U.S., 16.1% of surveyed internet users use
OpenOffice either "sometimes" or "regularly".  For the same question
5.7% use LibreOffice.  So roughly speaking open source office suites
have 20% market share.  This is probably centered in
home/student/personal use.  I'd expect that usage is lower than that
in businesses.

But the general issue is that a government that is not aware of
OpenOffice will not find *anything* that we have on our website.  You

Please bear in mind I was not trying to battle LO and AOO who has the
most downloads. I was simply asking if we can come up with a somewhat
reliable figure how many have downloaded a free "office" version
against how many have paid for the version.

I am still thinking about the issue about saving money, which I think
is high on many goverment/departmental lists right now. Something we
can use to make a slight push in direction of free software
independent of branding.

Thanks for the patches.  I integrated most of them.  Please check to
make sure all of your changes made it in.  I'm not sure that multiple
patches of the same file works with the CMS in anonymous mode.

If it is easier I can send you a ZIP of the current files and you can
edit those and send back.

+1, I have great respect for your work, but I agree with you that a
non active admin should be deleted, if for nothing to reduce the risk
of misusage

Instead of deleing your admin right I would much more prefer to see
you as an active admin.

And would therefore would not be crazy to think that there be money in those 
numbers: support, services, and the like. In the days of OOo, the money was 
hard to get: large installations also tended to provide their own support. But 
there numbers are even larger, much larger, now; then, the most optimistic 
accounts gave us about 100M and I was pretty skeptical. 

I'm not skeptical now.

So, I know that Lanedo is offering paid support for LO installs; "support" is a 
term of art, and it pays little. Better money is to be made with other services 
and also with certifications.

But even aside from that, the numbers speak to the fact that those enterprises, 
public, private, what have you, previously vacillating, ought now to dive in. 
Even if the vast bulk of ODF editors are not, in fact, open, nevertheless, the 
option of an open suite that is very usable and which has a significant user 
base, as well as being backed by a, well, behemoth—I mean IBM—ought to reassure 
the nervous nellies who would previously never have considered anything besides 
MSFT.

What we need now then is a good mobile (tablet) editor. I'm working with 
someone doing one for iOS. Android is quite possible. But we need resources for 
that.

(And I mean, of course, a native client.)

(dev) mailing list, you should do it ASAP, it's mandatory in case discussions 
occur about the forums. Registering the EN forum would be great too, some 
discussions apply to all NL forums and you'll see how thing are run.

Once admin, the first action is to activate the moderation of the first post 
for every new user.
Some moderators will be needed (but you can handle the volume alone at first).

Then we can think about deleting Drew's admin account.

Some of them did publish download numbers, but stopped doing so after
AOO 3.4.0 was released and we started publishing our numbers.

But it is hard to come up with apples-to-apples comparisons.  For
example, Linux users get LO with their distro.  They don't download.
LO has been available for 3 years, but AOO for only 18 months.  We're
counting only full installs, LO is counting -- well, we really don't
know.   The products have different update cycles, so it is hard to
convert downloads into users. (If you have many small releases then
each user will generate several downloads).  Differences like this
make it hard to compare the two.

But one approach is to look at Windows downloads from 3rd party
websites, like download.com.  This avoids all of the above problems.
If you look there you see that in the last week AOO has been
downloaded 21,850 times, and LibreOffice 2,664 times.

But from the perspective of ODF editors, Microsoft has pretty good ODF
support now as well, so the true number of ODF editor installs is
probably near 1 billion now.

Yet, what's of continuing interest is the way in which much of Italy seems to 
be split between LibreOffice and AOO, and not for any particularly technical or 
logistical reasons but, for all I can tell, reasons that are harder to 
comprehend.

The more important point is that it's fairly obvious that AOO is thundering 
ahead, has gathered enormous momentum and provides an important application to 
millions—

What's left is the mobile app. And that's coming.

I'm working on one more idea where I don't use a background.
Using a background circle or square requires you to have padding inside
before you can draw in it.

It was a eureka moment "these icons at 16x16 and 32x32 would look a lot
bigger and crisper if I didn't have them inside a circle or square"
When I have my last idea posted you will understand.

As for the about dialog box, I think that is low priority, as it is a big
improvement from 3.x.
We have some other areas where we can make a bigger impact visually.
If there is another area of the application that you feel needs a refresh
let us know, ie font dialog, .

Since I would not be so sure, because MS Office 2010 should have by now gained a
relatively high market share. 
In addition, older versions of MS Office, with which, for example:
http://odf-converter.sourceforge.net/

ODF can handle.

After further analysis I was able to isolate the problem. The crash
occured if a special extension (not a public one) gets included. In that
case even on linux the crash happens. The extensions includes around
hundert macros and I cannot tell you which one breaks the system.

After rebuilding the libsw.so with debug flags I've been able to
backtrace the error to the variable "m_pWrtShell", as you suggested.
After some research in the internet I found that patch:

I backported it to OO and successfully tested it on linux. I
think that this patch is absolutely necessary and must be applied in the

Indeed very impressive. Do we have any ideas how the other openoffice
versions are doing in terms of download ? if they publish their
numbers we could think about a blog post telling about the total

that sounds like a good idea. I think that the icons on the user 
interface of OOO could use some refreshment as well. They haven't 
changed since version 2.x and are looking a bit "dusty" by now. OOO

version looked nicer than the current one

I do, andrea got the same error, but I dont in ubuntu. I think flex
generates different output, can you please mail me gConPo_yy.c so I

That does not work at the moment because I am integrating merge.

I have solved the other problem, which I introduced while trying to
get merge to work in helpcontent2.

if you use:
R1530978

that builds l10ntools cleanly on my ubuntu. (build --all --genPO)

totally agree, but right now it is a floating target, since I am
halfway through integrating merge. Once merge is integrated build will
work as usuad.

when you do "build --all --genPO", it extract all texts, makes
template files ready for pootle.

The workflow will be:
1) build --all --genPO
2) commit templates in svn and update template dir in pootle
3) run "update against templates" in pootle
4) translate
5) commit po files to svn
6) build --all --with-lang="1 2 3 ..."

And right now I work on 6).

lucense is used in the help system to generate the index etc. I believe
it is done partly during build and later during the first start of the
help. Can't remember the details.

*Is it true that I can not use the sidebar using Basic Extension?* Or do I
understand this wrong?


As far as I understand our variant of BASIC it is not possible to create 
a BASIC-only extension.  Therefore my idea was to create a Java-BASIC 
hybrid where the generic boilerplate code (factory, registration of 
services, etc) is written in Java and only the implementation of the 
actual panel is provided in BASIC.  But this does not seem to work 
either.  But maybe only my knowledge of OpenOffice BASIC is not good enough.


The Java-only solution that DOES work can probably be easily adopted to 
other languages with proper UNO binding.






But if you or anybody else want to give Java a try, I made
another demo
[2] and implemented a similar search dialog completely in
Java.  Most of
that demo extension is generic code that does not have to be modified
for a real-life extension.  Any other language with complete
UNO binding
(like Python) should work very similar.

Look into its README file for an explanation of the
individual files and
pointers of what to change if you want to implement your own panels.

Here is how to import that ZIP file into Eclipse:

- Start a generic or Java-centric Eclipse
- Click menu entry File->Import...

In the 'Import' dialog
- Select 'General->Existing Projects into Workspace'
- Click 'Next >'
- Select 'Select archive file:'
- Click 'Browse...' and load the downloaded SidebarSearchDemo.zip
- Click 'Finish'
A new entry should appear in the 'Package Explorer' (by
default on the
left side) labeld 'SidebarSearchDemo'.

- Locate the 'Ant' view.  If it is not open then
- Click Window->Show View->Ant
- Drag-and-drop the 'SidebarSearchDemo' entry from the 'Package
Explorer' to the 'Ant' view.
- Expand the new 'SidebarSearchDemoOXT' entry in the 'Ant' view.

- Double click on the 'oxt [default]' entry.
This will build both the JAR and the OXT file.
- In OpenOffice open the extension manager and add the newly built
SidebarSearchDemo.oxt.  It doesn't matter if one is already
installed, it will be overwritten.
- Restart OpenOffice

Repeat the last step three steps (from double click on 'oxt'
to restart)
whenever you made changes and want to test them.

Problem with building branch l10n40 on MacOS

Hi Jan,

as promised I tried to build the l10n40 branch on MacOS. I started with
my normal config settings and included some languages (keyid bg da de
en-US).

The first error I got was in l10ntools, makedepend was missing which is
built in soltools. This is strange because l10tools has a build
dependency on soltools. Anyway solving this manually I got the next
error in l10ntools.

The next problem was that lucene was not built and here the build
dependency is missing in l10ntools/prj/build.lst. Solving manually ...

Next problem is a missing hash_map header

In file included from
.../svn/l10n40/main/l10ntools/source/help/HelpLinker.cxx:24:
.../svn/l10n40/main/l10ntools/source/help/HelpCompiler.hxx:28:20: error:
hash_map: No such file or directory

It seems that some build dependencies are missing ... I will continue
when I have time ...

Is the branch in sync with trunk or nearly up-to-date?

My recommendation is to build from scratch with a clean env to detect
missing dependencies.

you understand correct, it doesn't work with Basic and more work would
be necessary. Or potentially some Basic experts have some ideas how to
add the dialog as parameter to the callback functions.

November 9th, 2013.
Once we reach the deadline, we will have a separate discussion for
optimizing for the best user experience.

This is not a contest or a call for public proposals. This is regular,
needs to be done, no-bikeshedding-please work. When the deadline Nov 9th
arrives, if there is more than one viable solution, we will try to reach
consensus without a end user vote.
eg. We will not be doing what we did with the logo, that was a 
special case

because it is the face of AOO.

Python should be no problem because it is a full language binding and
you can implement UNO objects in Python. The problem is more with
scripting languages where this is not possible.

But anyway to support Basic here better probably more work is necessary
and I don't see that this will happen soon. Any volunteers who are
interested to work on a better support? Without having real detail
knowledge I assume that we would need some helper in Basic to support
the management of dialogs/sidebar per frame/document and to allow easy
access to the underlying window controls...

But in general I would concentrate on other more powerful languages like
Java or Python instead of Basic.

to make it more clear the integration of languages after the
localization deadline was good will to recognize the hard work of the
volunteers. But this should not be the normal procedure in the future
and the new process Jan is working on will help to improve the overall
situation. But we will have translation deadlines in the future as well
and it is of course important that this work is somewhat aligned with
our release plans.

+1, I believe you can simply replace it and if somebody has further
ideas to improve the about dialog it's fine and we can discuss it.

re converting word docs readable in openoffice

Hi, just a heads up, you guys need to fix the convert function of word docs to 
open office, they are scrambled and unreadable in locations once scrolled down 
on and out of whack compared to the original.

I like 'AOO Desktop Icon Exploration 2 (Round)', but not the circles. 
Instead I would prefer rounded rectangles.
