GSM Modem
Hi We are looking for a high-end GSM modem (not simple mobile phone!!) which can talk to SUN Solaris m/c over serial port and send/receive short messages in UK. The modem should have built in power supply. We are keen on modem with reference history (used and working with no hitches). Any info/links will be highly appreciated. Regards, PS: I apologize if it was already discussed ( I am in crises !). **Disclaimer Information contained in this E-MAIL being proprietary to Wipro Limited is 'privileged' and 'confidential' and intended for use only by the individual or entity to which it is addressed. Re: GSM modem
Use current cvs and at2 It works. If you want to use with 1.03. you need to modify some rows of smsc_at.c (pdu encode) Andrea - Original Message - From: "David Holland" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Fernando Primo" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Cc: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Wednesday, October 24, 2001 10:46 AM Subject: Re: GSM modem > On Tue, Oct 23, 2001 at 06:51:33PM +0200, Fernando Primo wrote: > > I try to probe kannel 1.0.3 to send SMS mainly, but i don´t sure about > > the kind of GSM modem that i have to use. AW: GSM Modem
I think a mobile phone fits your requirements quite nicely (except for the fact that it is a mobile phone). There are billions of them in daily use and they come with a builtin battery that provides UPS for a day or so. The chips and the software in mobile phones is in no way different from so called GSM modems. It's just a different packaging. A mobile phone might look a little bit unprofessional, but you could wrap it in a more serious looking case. RE: GSM Modem
In my company we use Wavecom modems (specificly WM02B model), and its working perfectly for our needs (very high loads for both sending and receiving). it does not have a builtin power supply, but use an external adapter, but in addition to the external power adapter it comes with a connector and wires that allow you to connect the modem directly to any 12v DC power output, so you could have (for example) a single power source with battery backup power your entire modem rack. -- Oded Arbel m-Wise Inc. Re: GSM Modem
The Siemens Cellular Engine's MC ## work fine - but really they are just normal phones. Their serial port is a bit faster - it is a bit easier to mount in a 1U rack box with all the extra bits - but you are limited by the air speed anyway. The only real reason to use those is that they are much easier to mount securely - i.e. lock them down against vibrations, theft, have the case opened by laymen with no issues, etc. Dw. Title: Message First thing I would like to dissuade you from using the M20 terminal - from my experience it has many flaws and its behavior is undefined in some common situations. second thing - why not use Kannel to communicate with the modem ? if you don't want to use Kannel, you can just take the source of one of the AT modules (my recommendation will be AT2) as a reference implementation (porting it to Java should be hard). --Oded Arbelm-Wise Inc.[EMAIL PROTECTED] "My life needs a rewind/erase button." -- Calvin and Hobbes -Original Message-From: Saurabh Bhardwaj [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]Sent: Monday, March 11, 2002 1:33 PMTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED]Subject: RE: GSM Modem HiLet me first thank all who provided me with their valuable insights (Andreas Fink, Oded Arbel, Jörg, Dave Wilson, Dw.). UDH over GSM modem
Hi, I have for a time now tried to send UDH over a GSM modem. After a while and reading the news in this list, I changed the DCS from 04 to F4 in the code and tried. What I am trying to send is a OTA configuration, which is over one SMS long. Now I can send the OTA to a Ericsson e380, but the Nokia see the OTA as malformed !?!?! I can send the same OTA via a EMI connection and it works. Under here is the bearerbox output from the emi and gsm modem. And kannel sends the OTA (send command status: 0). I use linux RedHat 7.0 and 7.1 and the newest CVS version. Can anybody see what is wrong? WAP kannel + GSM Modem
Hi all, I am trying to use Kannel as WAP&SMS Gateway. Initially i started with SMS Gateway, using a GSM phone as modem and (after some trials) everything was ok. Now i am testing kannel as WAP gateway. The idea is to establish a PPP connection (dial-in) between a WAP phone and the GSM phone (connected to kannel) used as modem. But i had many problems I followed the instructions on the Kannel User Guide (about "Setting up a dial-up line") but after i added the line "S0:2345:respawn:/sbin/mgetty ttyS0 -x 6 -D /dev/ttyS0" to the file "/etc/inittab" (and the others explained on the guide) the GSM modem (Ericsson T39) doesn't answer automatically to the call of WAP phone (Nokia 9210) Probably i have a problem with mgetty. Below you can find the mgetty log file: 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 mgetty: experimental test release 1.1.26-Apr16 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 mgetty.c compiled at Jul 24 2001, 18:57:33 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 user id: 0, parent pid: 1 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 reading configuration data for port 'ttyS0' 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 reading /etc/mgetty+sendfax/mgetty.config... 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 conf lib: read: 'debug 9' 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 conf lib: read: 'speed 19200' 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 conf lib: read: 'port ttyS0' 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 section: port ttyS0, **found** 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 conf lib: read: 'debug 9' 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 conf lib: read: 'data-only y' 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'speed', type=0, flags=3, data=19200 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'switchbd', type=0, flags=1, data=0 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'direct', type=3, flags=1, data=FALSE 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'blocking', type=3, flags=1, data=FALSE 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'port-owner', type=1, flags=1, data=uucp 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'port-group', type=1, flags=1, data=uucp 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'port-mode', type=0, flags=1, data=432 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'toggle-dtr', type=3, flags=1, data=TRUE 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'toggle-dtr-waittime', type=0, flags=1, data=500 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'need-dsr', type=3, flags=1, data=FALSE 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'data-only', type=3, flags=2, data=TRUE 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'fax-only', type=3, flags=1, data=FALSE 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'modem-type', type=1, flags=1, data=auto 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'modem-quirks', type=0, flags=0, data=(empty) 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'init-chat', type=2, flags=1, data= \dATQ0V1H0 OK ATS0=0Q0&D3&C1 OK 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'force-init-chat', type=2, flags=1, data= \d\d\d\d+++\d\d\d \dATQ0V1H0 OK 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'post-init-chat', type=2, flags=0, data=(empty) 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'data-flow', type=4, flags=1, data=1 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'fax-send-flow', type=4, flags=1, data=7 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'fax-rec-flow', type=4, flags=1, data=7 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'modem-check-time', type=0, flags=1, data=3600 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'rings', type=0, flags=1, data=1 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'msn-list', type=2, flags=0, data=(empty) 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'get-cnd-chat', type=2, flags=0, data=(empty) 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'cnd-program', type=1, flags=0, data=(empty) 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'answer-chat', type=2, flags=1, data= ATA CONNECT \c 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'answer-chat-timeout', type=0, flags=1, data=80 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'autobauding', type=3, flags=1, data=FALSE 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'ringback', type=3, flags=1, data=FALSE 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'ringback-time', type=0, flags=1, data=30 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'ignore-carrier', type=3, flags=1, data=FALSE 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'issue-file', type=1, flags=1, data=/etc/issue 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'prompt-waittime', type=0, flags=1, data=500 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'login-prompt', type=1, flags=1, data=@ login: 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'login-time', type=0, flags=1, data=240 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'fido-send-emsi', type=3, flags=1, data=TRUE 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'login-conf-file', type=1, flags=1, data=login.config 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'fax-id', type=1, flags=1, data=49 115 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'fax-min-speed', type=0, flags=1, data=0 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'fax-max-speed', type=0, flags=1, data=14400 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'fax-server-file', type=1, flags=0, data=(empty) 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'diskspace', type=0, flags=1, data=1024 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'notify', type=1, flags=1, data=faxadmin 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'fax-owner', type=1, flags=1, data=uucp 10/17 01:11:36 yS0 key: 'fax-group', type=1, flags=0, data=(empty) 10/

PDU mode and GSM modem
I'm trying to send an SMS in PDU mode using kannel gatewy 1.0.3 and a GSM Modem. I can not get it to work, the modem returns OK after the send command is issued but nothing never comes to the mobile phone. I know many messages have been exchanged previously about this topic.. pdu_encode in smsc_at.c is probably not correct, but I could not find in the archives a clear solution of my problem... Sorry to be a pain guys, I can access the modem AT commands through IR but through the data cable I cannot gain access. I was hoping this phone would work with Kannel as the same commands as in sms_at2.c work through IR. Unfortunately IR is not stable enough to leave running - line of sight and all that. connection of bearerbox with GSM modem
Hello, I work with the cygwin installation of kannel on a win2k machine. I have a peculiar problem with the bearerbox. When I start bearerbox utility and try and connect to the modem, the speed in the conf file does not seem to match and the connection fails. But if I try to connect to the modem thru the HyperTerminal (developed by Hilgraeve for microsoft) to the modem with the same speed, the connection comes through correctly. Consequently if I try the bearerbox connection with the same conf file, the bearerbox is up and running fine. Any idea why this would happen? Best Regards Anu

RE: connection of bearerbox with GSM modem
Hello Stipe, I'll put it down in points, yes I get the connection, but I'll explain where the problem is. 1) connect the gsm modem to usb port 2) start bearerbox to connect to modem at 115200 (speed set in conf file) 3) bearerbox fails to connect, because after opening port at that speed, at command fails 4) connect the modem through hyperterminal (Hilgraeve product, comes with win 2k) at 115200 5) disconnect the modem from hyperterminal 6) reconnect with the same configuration file from bearerbox, this time connection will succeed. This is not sporadic behaviour. I run through this process everytime I connect the gsm modem. I wanted to know if there are any workarounds for this. Maybe you should post a USB related question to the cygwin mailing list. Sorry, but it's definetly out of scope for this mailing list. REF:- SMSC - GSM Modem - Modem Type Auto Detect
Guys, I am looking at the code here in smsc_at.c and cannot seem to see where the manufacturer string and issue are generated ready to be match to the detect-string variables as outlined in the user guide. Is this stuff fully implemented? or am I looking in the wrong place. If it is not done yet I can add the code to do the auto detect but am currently not fully confident of the whole architecture so someone may have to point me in the direction for implementing the hand down of the modem group stuff from the config files. gsm-modem -AT+ CNMI / no confirmation back to SMSC?
Hi. I'm running 'latest kannel cvs' (sep28) with a Falcom A2D1 modem, and the at smsc interface (*) It seems the modem/kannel is not acknowledging the incoming SMSs the way the telco SMSC (some kind of EMI2, I assume) wants it. Whenever I send an SMS from a regular mobile, two things happen: 1) it arrives alright within kannel. 2) the telco thinks it didn't, and sends the regular mobile a message saying 'Mobile text to 1234whatever sent 02.10.01 15.03.05 cannot be delivered because of error in the mobilephone (116)' (the text is really in danish, and I guess the 116 is a number of characters, not a return code, but I'm not sure). This behaviour must be partly dependent on the telco - some telcos don't send such a DLR back. But whatever, this is no good, since the user shouldn't I'm guessing it must somehow be related to the AT+CNMI command, that allows one to set how messages are received (and confirmed ?). Do anyone have suggestions for, what I should be looking at to get more understanding of how CNMI is/can be used ? The kannel I'm using says AT+CNMI=1,2,0,0,0 (*) I am not using AT2 yet (though I want to), since my attempts to use it rather effectively screwed up the gsm modem :-(

Re: gsm-modem -AT+ CNMI / no confirmation back to SMSC?
Hi. This actually works, thank you ! (The sender now gets a 'message delivered' instead of 'problem with receiving device' message). They (kannel and the modem) sure do talk a lot, though. But, I'm curious: This workaround, is it generally needed because of a problem with falcom, or is it temporary because something else needs to be fixed ? I don't see a performance problem in polling a gsm_modem (it doesn't get messages that quick anyway), but I wish the kannel.log didn't grow when there is no traffic... Also, I'm still curious about the return codes...

Matt, I would like you to patch the at code and let at2 code from Andreas Fink. By the way maybe someone won't agree with this, but having an at3 is not so good. Anybody using at currently has any comments? Andrea
Re: gsm-modem -AT+ CNMI / no confirmation back to SMSC?
Why is it that bad to have at3 ? Current AT module is buggy but it works, AT2 is worse cause sometimes my Siemens M20T just stop receiving any messages under it. I think adding AT3 till we get the perfect one is a good idea. I am willing to test the new At module which saves messages into a sim card. Thanks.
