My Norton caught it and placed it in the quarantine. I do have auto-protect,
script blocking and the mail agents all running. Also since the Nimda worm
began I live update twice a day.

 Thanks Darrell.

Due to this and other spam on the list, the devinfo list has now been
changed to allow postings from subscribers only. If you need to post
from another address, please contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I am tracking down how any attachment made it to the list - it is
configured to strip all attachments and reject mail containing just an
 attachment (e.g. HTML mail).

 Thanks,

[e-smith-devinfo] hdparm

2001-09-24 Thread timothee

Hi all,

Yesterday I reinstalled my e-smith server and upgraded it to SME server
v5.0...yesyes...that's not shocking at all I guess :)
But...and that's my question...is e-smith/sme server capable to auto detect
if my harddisk can be run with hdparm (which is a sort of DMA I guess?)??

In the past I installed e-smith 4.1.2 and there I could enable hdparm and it
was working quite well. Why is it now disabled by default and why can I not
choose to enable it at a new setup??
How can I enable it afterwards??

TIA for your help,

Timothée

I think this was due to the ProxyPass because the pages come

transformed (by the browser) to /initial.html instead of /e-smith-

 I fixed this one:

 ftp://ftp.e-smith.org/pub/e-smith/contrib/DanielvanRaay/RPMS/noarch/e-
 smith-userpanel-0.1-4.noarch.rpm

by just changing the reference to initial.html into an absolute /e-
 smith-user/initial.html.

Hi Daniel,

Ok, I'm back at work and had a chance to do some testing

I installed new userpanel package and that seems to be working fine.

But I did have the same problem that Richard Ford hadVaction did not work. (or
more
preciously, Stopped working)

I did some digging and saw a few permission errors in the /var/log/messages

(See Below)

So I cd'd to the test user Homedir I was working with and noticed 2 .vacation files
.vacation.db with owned by the user and
.vacation.msg owned by root user and group admin

I did a chown to root:admin for .vacation.db and vacation started working again. Just
to make sure
I did a chown back to dean:dean (the user) and vacation stopped again.

I then did a full uninstall of all three packages. Removed the 2 .vacation files and
then re-installed
the 3 packages. Everything appeared to be working. I enabled vacation for my test user
again.
(From the User-panel) and I sent 1 test message to it. I got the approriate response.

I then disabled it and re-enabled it and is stopped working again.

Here's the section of /var/log/messages

The installer will upgrade existing versions.

It also appears to replace like packages already installed with what's on the CD.

I had cmu-snmp installed and during the upgrade the cmu-snmp package was unintstalled

RE: [e-smith-devinfo] My Samba howtos

2001-09-24 Thread Greg J. Zartman

Second, the add user script on the first completely bypasses the normal
e-smith mechanisms and
works for some users, while the add user script from the second one tries
to use the e-smith way and
doesn't seem to work for anybody.

The method that you outline in your howto that bypasses the e-smith way of
doing things should work for 95%+ of users provided Samba is in fact
running as a PDC and two things happen on the client machine when joining
the domain:

1. The user MUST be logged on the Win NT/2000 machine as the administrator.
2. When prompted to authenticate addition the machine to the domain, the
user MUST input the root username and password. The e-smith admin account,
or any other for that matter, will not work.

If the user neglects to do either of the above, Windows will report a
totally unrelated error message and the machine will not be added to the
domain (This error message reported will likely get better over time as the
Samba team reverse engineers more and more of the Win 2000 RPC specs)

Further, I think the bypass approach is the better one as it seems more
inline with my understanding of the development path of Samba. It's my
understanding that the Samba team plans to build functionality into Samba to
remove machine accounts from smbpasswd and passwd when a machine leaves the
domain. I'm not very familiar with the scripts that Mitel has developed to
add machines accounts, but I would hate for these accounts to show up in the
server manager along with user accounts (as often happens with X Window user
account apps). It would really clutter things.

IANAL, yes.

If I install qmail as per make install and sell or distribute a system,
this is obviously not a license violation.

IANAL, correct.

Now, what happens if once this system is installed at a user's site, the
user then elects to modify it so that qmail is not in a make install
state? Has the user violated the license? Is this not allowed, perhaps to
replace a script or binary with one of their own making, or to relocate a
 utility to another path?

Yes, users are completely at liberty to modify their own systems. The
restriction is on _distributing_ a modified qmail.

If the above is not disallowed, then is it a license violation for an
application installed by the user subsequent to qmail to make a similar
 modification?

I don't believe so. I believe that what RAV is doing is fine, as long
as the end-user chooses to install it. Bundling RAV (and thus bundling
a modification to qmail) would be a problem.

If qmail is installed, and RAV is installed, and then the system
delivered,
and then the user chooses to run an RPM that makes the two work
together --
I fail to see how this is a problem. I can see the problem if the two
packages and installed and integrated prior to distribution, but one in
the
user's possession it seems odd that it would be any kind of license
 violation.

IANAL, but correct. The issue is _user_ choice. If a user chooses to
install something which modifies qmail, that is their choice.

And, of course, I could be wrong. I'm mostly just curious as I've
heard many times how restrictive the qmail license is.

[e-smith-devinfo] procmail issue solved

2001-09-24 Thread Darrell May

I tracked down the issue with procmail. It was actually something very
simple. For whatever reason, what worked under 4.1.2 for the procmail
command line does not work under SME5. Simply, the full path to procmail
must be provided on the command line:

old = | procmail ~/.procmailrc
new = | /usr/bin/procmail ~/.procmailrc

I've applied this simple fix to Stephen Noble's rpm and rebuilt the file
under the name 'dmc-mitel-procmail-0.0.1-2.noarch.rpm'. This info is
also updated in the procmail HowTo.

minor name change and spec file editing to reflect these are now for SME5

Note, still very interested in hearing feedback on my raid monitor and

That is Charlie's contrib rpm. Do you have a problem to report or are
you just asking me if I've tried it, which I have not, as yet.

I'll add this to my ToDo list.

It was reported to cause problems for some. My guess is older hardware
was the cause. I have used it on all 4.1.2 server installs and have had
no issues. I use AOpen MX3S ATA100 motherboards. I very much appreciate
the performance improvement for the ide hdd(s).

I have only had SME5 since the public release (about a week) but again
can report no problems using DMA on the above hardware. Bear in mind
testing has been on my internal test server. I have not moved any
production machines to SME5 as yet.

[e-smith-devinfo] services rpm for e-smith

2001-09-24 Thread timothee

Hi all,

I got a little problem with my freshly installed sme server (nothing strange
I think for a linux 'newbie').

I hoped the services rpm for the older e-smith server and gateway (this one:
http://www.e-smith.org/contrib/rpm-index/RPM-e-smith-service-control-1.1.0-0
1.noarch.html) was working also at the new server. It installed without any
problems and the link appeared in the manager, but when I click change it
says the page can not be displayed ?!
So, I wanted to uninstall it, but rpm -e e-smith-service-control-1.1.0-01
doesn't work :(

Is there anyone making a working services rpm for the new server? I want to
disable atalk and squid. Or is there another way to disable these two
services? And if you answer this question, could you please give me a
working method to uninstall this non-working rpm and to remove the services
link in the manager.

TIA,

Timothée

[e-smith-devinfo] Blades Suggestion

2001-09-24 Thread Greg J. Zartman

I'd like to make a suggestion with regards to Blades. Would it be useful to
have an option in this interface to a Blade in the even that something bad
happens during the install?. Suppose my power goes out or something goofy
like that right in the middle of installing a blade. Do I have a half
installed blade or does the blade install routine take interrupted installs
into account?

I guess I'm speaking pretty much on speculation as to how Blades actually
work, but I would guess that like most install routines, nothings bomb
proof.

[e-smith-devinfo] Shutdown problems

2001-09-24 Thread Bas Konings

I'm having a problem with shutdown, if I shutdown the system when its
almost time for the PC to shutdown power (its an ATX system) I get an
error filing the monitor, looks like a memory dump to me. After that I
press CTRL-ALT-DEL and the system reboots, by turning of power at this
time the system doesn't have any damage.

I've had these problems from the first time I installed e-smith (ver
4.1.2), SME 5 doesn't solve it.

I've tried various things, the error even occurs on a freshly installed
system that is NOT configured.
I also changed the hardware a couple of times (even the powersuply to
AT, the main board supports AT and ATX).
Only things I didn't change is Main board, CPU and Harddrive.

Any one have an id how to solve my problem?
Its not really important, just irritates me.

Could it be the onboard USB?

How can i disable the USB device, at startup USB is started (USB-UHCI)
But I don't want that, I don't need it.

Greetz,

Bas Konings

No, it was reported to cause file corruption problems even on some new
hardware. Consistent with our simple and reliable above all else
philosophy, we have disabled it by default and (for simplicity) removed it
from the user interface.

In our experience, server performance is only rarely limited by disk
performance.

The performance tweaking option is still there for those who know and
care.

No, procmail is unused by SME5.

By chance has there been any changes to the mail subsystem that may

Not any that was not a side effect of upgrading to the latest available
RedHat packages. As you have reported elsewhere, the full path name is
required if you create .qmail files which execute procmail. In any case,
for security reasons, it is always wise to specify full path names.

Ok, i hate beeing a pain-in-the-ass i have said if before, and i say it

Not to mention the cost for some guys in Australia, that just resently, now

[e-smith-devinfo] phpMyAdmin 2.2.0

2001-09-24 Thread Randy Brown

Hi everybody,

My apologizes if this is not the correct list for this to be posted in.

Darrell May, the phpmyadmin rpm's that you created works like a charm,
Great work!

I was wondering if there was a way to add mysql users through the
phpmyadmin or do I need to learn how to do it by hand? If i have to do it
by hand would someone please post the syntax that i need to use just to add
users?
I don't think that I need to learn all of the functionality of mysql just
to run my small site, ( i say that now,but it will be a different story
when my database crashes... lol ) I think all that i need is to no how to
add users and what kind of permissions those users need to have, because I
agree that not every user needs my root password!
thanks in advance for any assistance.

some how integrating it into the regular e-smith-manager? ( or what ever it
is called now ) grin

Well, AFAIK, phpMyAdmin doesn't include a front end for adding users,
but it will allow you to execute arbitrary SQL commands. So, I guess
the answer is yes, you can add users through phpMyAdmin, but you'll need
to learn the syntax. Fortunately, the syntax is very simple:

mysql grant all on database.* to user@localhost identified by
'password';

...where database, user, and password all represent the obvious,
and you do use the single quotes around password.

Is anybody considering making phpmyadmin a blade for the new sme 5.0 and

I expect once the documentation on the blade architecture is released,
somebody will be working on this.
