[e-smith-devinfo] Wireless Options
I am going to be putting a wiressless how-to together. Does anybody have any experience/information with using the Lucent WaveLan (Orinoco) Gold cards that they could contribute. Both Gordon and I have successfully installed and set up the Orinoco Gold cards on our home e-smith 4.1.2 boxes (Gordon in Australia, I in Ottawa). I have now upgraded my home system to SME Server V5, but in doing so my drivers no longer work... it is most likely just an issue of the change to the 2.2.19 kernel. I have not yet had the time to figure it out. RE: [e-smith-devinfo] Wireless Options
Hi Dan, Thanks for the links. Right now, I'm just trying to get the PCI Adapter to be recognized (before working with the PCMCIA Card). If you are interested, I can write a howto for 4.1.2 and additional instructions for SME5. If you can think of anything else (tips, tricks or notes), please send it my way so that I can include them as well. Thanks! Re: [e-smith-devinfo] Wireless Options
any chance that the Gold and Silver cards setup the same? We just got wireless internet service from prairie i-net and they provide a silver card. They don't support linux but do say they will provide the driver. I installed in in a windows machine because I am currently using my e-smith for a web site development platform and I have a project a little over half done that I don't want to take any chances with. Anyways I will be looking forward to you how-to. Dan York wrote: > Trevor, > > > I am going to be putting a wiressless how-to together. Trevor, > Thanks for the links. Right now, I'm just trying to get the PCI Adapter to > be recognized (before working with the PCMCIA Card). Ahh, yes... the PCI Adapter. I could not get it to work with my system and wound up returning it and getting the ISA adapter instead. Gordon did some subsequent research and found out that apparently the Avaya/Lucent PCI adapter will only work on systems that have *ONLY* PCI slots. If there are any ISA slots in your system, the PCI adapter will not work. (Or would not at the time Gordon did his research 6 or so months ago.) FYI, there was nothing I had to do to configure the ISA adapter. Just plugged it in and then plugged a PCMCIA card into it. I was concerned that I was going to have to configure isapnp or some other Linux tool... but others have told me that it just basically works as a bridge to the PCMCIA card... I didn't have to do anything other than just plug it in. > If you are interested, I can write a howto for 4.1.2 and additional > instructions for SME5. That would be great. RE: [e-smith-devinfo] Wireless Options
Thanks Dan, Well, I just got off the phone with technical support at Lucent/Agere. We confirmed that it is the Avaya/Lucent PCI adapter, so it should work. I wonder if Gordon had to do anything to make his PCI bridge adapter work? Or if he just plugged it in. I'm going to keep looking around. I wish I had ISA slots... :-) Trev. > -Original Message- > From: Dan York [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > Sent: Wednesday, October 03, 2001 9:41 AM > To: Trevor Ouellette > Cc: E-Smith Developers Info Mailing List > Subject: Re: [e-smith-devinfo] Wireless Options > > > Trevor, > > > Thanks for the links. Re: [e-smith-devinfo] Wireless Options
Tim, > any chance that the Gold and Silver cards setup the same? Setup for the Gold and Silver cards is identical except for the encryption keys. Silver supports 40-bit encryption (or is it 64?), Gold supports 128-bit encryption[1]. That is the difference. So when you are using 'iwconfig' to enter an encryption key, the Gold cards can support a longer encryption key. The setup from the Linux side, though, is the same. Regards, Dan [1] Note that this is the WEP encryption that was cracked incredibly easily recently. If you are concerned about security, you shouldn't trust WEP and instead run an additional layer of ssh or IPSEC on top of the cards. -- Please report bugs to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Please mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] (only) to discuss security issues Support for registered customers and partners to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives by mail and http://www.mail-archive.com/devinfo%40lists.e-smith.org

You need wireless-tools-21-0 for kernel 2.2.19, and that's the one on the SME Server V5 CD. It is not installed by default, but there for people to play with. I found that moving to the later kernel moved my Wavelan card from wvlan0 to eth2 without any change of configuration. RE: [e-smith-devinfo] Wireless Options
I use several wavelan/orinoco cards in point-to-point configurations of up to two miles. They use adapters at about 65 USD from the little antenna connector on the pc card to a standard type "N" connector, then third party transmission line/antennas. In general it is best to locate the card as close as possible to the antenna and make up the difference over ethernet. The slower rates (1, 2 Mbps) are in general more robust on longer links (the faster cards may fall back anyway). The security provided is seriously broken. I'd suggest a firewall or sandbox based on MAC addresses, shut off crypt, and then all '11b' type cards will talk at the highest common speed. The older (the important number on the cards is IEEE 803.11b) cards (1 & 2 Mbps) are a drug on the market and often get thrown out from upgrades. I've gotten some from dumpsters. Re: [e-smith-devinfo] Wireless Options
Trevor, > If you can think of anything else (tips, tricks or notes), please send it my > way so that I can include them as well. I did think of one more thing... most of the web page tutorials on using 802.11 talk about configuring your card through /etc/pcmcia/wireless.opts, /etc/pcmcia/network.opts or, I believe, /etc/pcmcia/pcmcia.opts. However, neither Gordon or I, working independently of each other, were able to get the cards to configure using these files. We had to use the "iwconfig" command from the 'wireless-tools' package in order to manually configure the card. This had to be scripted in order for it to work each time the card was inserted. For me this was true of both my e-smith 4.1.2 server and also my RH7.0 laptop that I was using as my wireless client. Previously (when I worked for Linuxcare), I did have a laptop running with the identical Orinoco card and it *did* read the options from the /etc/pcmcia/wireless.opts file. It worked great. The only difference I can see between what I tried now and what I did before was that in that prior time I compiled the pcmcia-cs drivers from source (and indeed I recompiled the entire kernel). This time, in order to come up with easy instructions, I did it all using RPMs. I have not had the time to try compiling it all from source to see if it will work properly. In any event, I thought I would mention this in case you are reading web pages about how to configure wireless and they tell you to edit the files in /etc/pcmcia. (Most of those tutorials I have seen also talk about compiling everything from scratch.) Maybe it will work for you, but it didn't for me. I had to stick with iwconfig. The PRM is built by "compiling from source". It's how they compile from source that matters. We might have to fix the RPM if it is broken. I suspect, however, that the difference is because you are now using later versions of the package - although I can't think of a good reason for them to break the documented behaviour. Re: [e-smith-devinfo] Wireless Options
Charlie, > The RPM is built by "compiling from source". It's how they compile from > source that matters. Exactly. What I meant was that previously *I* compiled it on my own system, so I knew precisely how it was compiled... with what options, etc. With an RPM, I am getting it compiled however the packager compiled it. [1] > I suspect, however, that the difference is because you are now using later > versions of the package - although I can't think of a good reason for them > to break the documented behaviour. It could be. The annoying thing is that some of the web pages showed it working (after compiling from source) with the same modules I was using (kernel version and everything). It was rather frustrating for quite some time until I just gave up and scripted 'iwconfig'. Regards, Dan [1] Just this morning I tried installing a Jabber server using a contributed RPM from http://www.jabber.org/ onto my SME Server. Unfortunately, when I went to start up the jabber server, it failed because it was referencing a path that did not exist on my system. I checked through all the config files and could not find any references to this path. All I could conclude was that it must have been hardcoded in somehow during the compile by the packager. I used rpmfind.net to find another RPM (this one from Mandrake), and it seemed to install without any problems. -- Dan York, Director of Training, Network Server Solutions Group Mitel Networks Corporation [EMAIL PROTECTED] Ph: +1-613-751-4401 Cell: +1-613-263-4312 Fax: +1-613-564-7739 150 Metcalfe Street, Suite 1500, Ottawa,ON K2P 1P1 Canada http://www.e-smith.com/ http://www.mitel.com/sme/ -- Please report bugs to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Please mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] (only) to discuss security issues Support for registered customers and partners to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives by mail and http://www.mail-archive.com/devinfo%40lists.e-smith.org
