Hi All, I am posting this question in this group as I know their are a few of you using SDR modules. I am looking at getting one soon to use in my shack (bit hard for portable), but I don't know which way to go? I have looked at the following few modules, SDR-IQ, Softrock, Flexradio and Genesis to name a few. I am impressed with the SDR-IQ, but it is quite pricey and it's only RX. I would like to be able to RX/TX. I could however use my Kenwood for the TX side of things. I did look at the SDR-14 but at twice the price over the SDR-IQ without much difference, won't be going that way. G'Day Simon, Thanks for the info. I have downloaded the software and I am currently listening to ur RX. Good copy, but get a bit of speaker crackle and it stutters at times, but that could be because I'm using WiFi. Would be interesting to see if I could hear myself at any of these remotes, be an interesting test. I still would like to build a SDR RX, I did see a couple of websites awhile ago, will have to search them out again. Mel, I would have to agree with you. It is a shame that for an extra couple of dollars fitting a USB interface and sound (quality) into the radio would open digital up to more uses. I too have a maze of cables running through the shack connecting radios to computers and others. Being able to run one single USB cable that would do Rig control and data would get rid (in my case) 3 cables. But I do what I can. As for D-Star, ICOM is the maker, don't believe Yaesu has anything in their line-up, same for Kenwood (except the rebrand). I am a Kenwood man and so far I have resisted going to D-Star until I see what the other makes bring out. If D-Star was so good WHY haven't the other brands made and sold them? So for now I am using a Signa-Link USB for the digital modes which makes things a little tidier. Still I have a messy shack. Bye for now. Kevin, ZL1KFM. PS. Considering that PSK 31 has been used for almost eleven years by many hams, I think the tranceiver manufacturers missed the opportunity to add this facility to their equipment many years ago. Interest in all forms of digital communication methods grew steadily during the first years of the new century and including an interface would have encouraged hams to buy a particular model. My shack has a rats nest of cable which is unsightly. The inclusion of D-star was obviously considered to be an asset for the sales of Yaesu, perhaps it is popular in Japan, but I believe a PSK interface would have helped to sell more Yaesu equipment worldwide. [digitalradio] Mini Touch Screen from GPS Unit.
Hi All, A little related to Digital modes but for sure APRS. I have a Tom Tom GPS unit Go-720 which uses one of those small touch-screens, I was wondering how difficult it would be to either use the GPS unit and install a different OS on it to control a remote PC or even use the screen? To be honest it may be a bit of of my knowledge, but then maybe it won't and I can think about giving it a go. I sent sent this to the other group listed as it could be usable for that use also. HI All, The SignaLink would not work with any data software even MixW. I tried DM780, MMSSTV, WinMor, MixW and a couple of others. I pulled all the cables out and re-inserted them. This is a USB device so there is no RTS or DTS to worry about. It was very plain and simple, plug and go (basically). The thing is it ran from the day I received it which was about 5-6 weeks ago. There have been no changes with the computer (to all programs), yes there have been the odd update for the likes of DM-780 and WinMor, but MMSSTV and MixW are the originals. So why a change to trigger the PTT from the SignaLink? I then went through the manual and found that pin 4 gives double the sensitivity to the PTT, which I then jumped and this did improve the PTT. BUT I am still at a loss why one day it was working fine and then the following days it has stopped. [digitalradio] Throught of a Digital Propagation Tool
Hi All, Just having a brain spark (not so many now-a-days) With all the new digital modes being devopled upto this date and the way some work; I was wondering if there could be some of propagation tool here? Thought would be some form of automation on spot frequecies on the different bands that cold record/monitor the propergation between continents. Of course this would require stations to dedicate their radio to this, but it could only be when the radio was not in operator use. I can remember quite a few years ago a ham friend who was a Amtor/Packet Sysop (using a PK-232) and he mentioned the band switching would allow him to get a good propagation view. But it was limited as it was setup for specific remote stations, he was not transferring to Asia or Europe, his hop was Austrailia and a couple of West Coast stations. It would require the software to control the scanning and switching of bands on the radio. Most radios that have scan functions, once switched to TX will not satrt scanning again. Thought would be to have the software scan each band at (say) 3 min intervals within a 30 min period, this would allow for slight differences in computer clocks. And then TX and monitor for 5 mins, recording any propergation traffic. Now I might be well off the mark here, just throwing something into the air for thoughts. Then the cycle woud start again. The data could then be uploaded to a central (online) monitoring database. The software could be configured to ignor certain calls for a band as this would swamp the reports. (I don't want to know ZL's (or even VK's) are being heard on 80 or 40mtrs, but I would like to know and report if Europe, Asia or the Americas are. Here is how I would see it mm - Band 00 - 160Mtrs 03 - 80Mtrs 06 - 40Mtrs 09 - 30Mtrs 12 - 20Mtrs 15 - 17Mtrs 18 - 15Mtrs 21 - 13Mtrs 24 - 10Mtrs 27 - 6Mtrs (Most new radios have this now) And then back to the top of the 30 min cycle again. I don't know what mode would be the best but I was thinking digital PSK31, but there could be a better digital mode. Anyway just some thoughts I had floating around and thought I would put it out there. I might be totally off the mark, but hey got to put things out there to think about. Thanks for Listening. Hi All, For whatever reason my SignaLink will not TX my TS-480. I have pulled all the plugs out and reconnected them. The software HRD w DM-780, MMSSTV and WinMor are setup for the SignaLink to switch PTT. I had everything weeking upto a week ago and nothing (from my understanding) has changed. If I switch DM-780 to use HRD to switch PTT this works well. TX audio out from the computer is set at 100% and the SignaLink is at 12 o'clock. The SignaLink is RXing okay and is decoding everything that comes up. I have pulled it apart and there does not appear to be anything dead in it. Does anyone have any ideas? Regards Kevin. ZL1KFM.

Andy, I have a PowerPoint paper around here somewhere which I downloaded on setting up a TS-2000 for KSS, a lot easier then I had setting up my TS-480. From the top of my head the TS-2000 can do VHF/UHF as well which means that you can do everything internally, no need to connect a TM-D700 (as in my case). G'Day All, THANKS to everyone for your help, ideas and suggestions. I tried a couple of options, first trying my newesh ASUS laptop (6 months), this worked well and there was hardly any noise on the radio, s-meter hardly moved and was fully usable. I then tried improving the desktop, added ferrits chokes on the supply lines. This did nothing to improve things. So out came the spare computer from the garage, removed what was an ASUS power supply and connected it up to the M/B and other drives. Turned HF radio on and powered up the power supply (not the M/B), quiet Now turned on the whole computer and had a minute (just moved the s-meter, and just heard) noise, nothing to concern myself with this time, and allowed me to receive those weak signals that are around due to poor conditions. So now I have a computer in the radio roomthat will allow me to operate both at the same time. I will improve it further when I get the earth matting completed. Only problem I have now it seems that down this way 7080 and surrounding appears to be used for voice, difficult to operate digital, but persevering (sorry for my spelling it's late) Regards and Thanks. Hi All, First of all THANKS to all those of you that replied with ideas and suggestions. I have had a chance over the past couple of days to get into the computer and determined a few funnies. 1. When I removed the case lid and then replaced it I found the noise level had increases, so there is a bad ground between the two. 2. I placed a filter/conditioner in the mains supply, this improved the amount of noise and would be acceptable to use now, but there was still a small amount present. 3. I tried out my new(ish) laptop, an ASUS Core-2 CPU and found that there was no noise (if there was it was very low). However I like to run the 3 big monitors and monitor everything. 4. The monitors are not the cause of the noise, as I tested these by cycling them on/off. Now that I have determined some things I might get it running on-air this weekend. BTW, I have noticed that 7080 down in the South Pacific is mainly voice, have not heard too much digital. Might be able to sneak some WINMOR in. Will list when I am ready and on air. Now back to the computer (desktop) and see if I can improve on it. HI All, I have been trying for the past week to get my radio quiet from the computer noise, WITHOUT any luck. The computer is a ASUS P5B Deluxe P4-3Ghz w 2.5G of ram, and 3 H/Ds with just under 1TB of space. I have an onboard Sound-card, but I brought a SignaLink-USB which arrived last week for digital modes. I am running Win7 RC (far better then Vista and even lets me run 3 monitors(handy for HRD), which by the way are not causing the noise tested them by switcvhing them on/off and did not interfer with the radio) I believe the power supply in the case is causing the problem because when I turn it on (before any software loads) the radio generates a S7 noise level on 80 and 40, a little better on 20 and above, but still there. Currently it's a waste of time even trying to listen for any digital traffic on 7080, 14.070/112 a bit better. Was even going to try WINMOR, but from what I have been reading I had better get the best RX I can first. I have tried another computer and even though it did generate some noise there, it was bareable with about an S2. As of yet I have not tried another power supply as this would require me to buy a new one (wife might get a bit upset about that one), I could pull one out of a spare computer but it's not as big as the one I have. I am about to do some googling to see if there is any mods on quieting the RF from them. Is there an easy; simple way to making this DAMM computer quieter Any ideas would be a help. HI Guys, Sorry for the request for help again. I am confused with my new SL-USB. I have followed the instructions to the T, and supposably done all the correct things. In one statement it says that if the sample rate is 11??? I should change this to 12000, but if the software is at 8000 then leave it alone. Opening HRD DM-780 I find the sample rate at 8000, so I left it alone. I then went into the calibrate mode of DM-780 and it started at about 7990 and got up to 7998.5. I ran it for about 30mins, but how long should I run the calibration? And is there a problem with it being 1.5 off? This was on RX, didn't get around to TX yet. So what happens now if I switch to another program like MMSSTV or WINMOR and I am able to change the sample rate to 12000, will this upset the settings I have in DM-780? While on it I have installed WINMOR, I intend trying it out hopefully later today (bands pretty dead here) and see what it does. BTW I am running Win7 RTC and love it. I am going to joing the SDR group and get some advise from them. If nothing else I might look at the SoftRock and build a single band until I find what I am looking for. Hi All, Is this part of Digital Radio or not, you make the choice. I have been doing some research through Google looking for a SDR kit to build myself a radio. Want to put the soldering iron on again now that I have my shack built and ready for use. I have checked out a number of sites from single band low power kits to full blown ready built units (At prices I don't need a computer). I would like to build something that would do multi-band so I can tune all the HF and higher if possible, but if not I could look at building the bands I want. I will check out any SDR groups and see what information is there. I did see on this group some mention of SDR's awhile back, so would be interested in your comments, and what they are like for digital modes? Hi All, I am in the proceeds of purchasing a new piece of radio equipment. I am tossing up between buying a new radio, new screwdriver antenna or a new sound interface. The first two are a lot more then the last. But that depends on which one I decide to buy. I had a look at the Rigblaster Pro, but at US$299 I felt this was a little high (I could be wrong here) I also looked at the Tigertronic at around $100 (a bit better price) My interest is in using it with my TS-480S/AT and any future rig I decide to buy. I am using all the digital modes. I would like it to be used on a couple of radios but that is not a high priority. I know this is very limited but what else is there to the interface. Some I have heard have better filtering and protection. Any thoughts would be grateful, direct would be fine too, see my address in the header. Regards Kevin, ZL1KFM.

Thanks Simon, But the big issue is the price. This one you mention is also up in the US$200 area, which is nearly NZ$400 for us, exchange rate. Makes me think twice before I purchase. Mode-specific contests might help, but ultimately we need to simply get on the air and call CQ more often. We are fortunate to have so many modes to use and I think we owe it to those who worked hard to bring them to us to use them. While we're on the soapbox... I think most would agree that we need more real conversation and less macro use regardless of which mode is being used. HI All, I am hoping someone has come across this problem I am having with my TS-480S/AT. It appears to be mainly on 20mtrs and has a frequency step of 61Khz. It appears on 14.094, 14.155, 14.216, 14.277, etc. I have checked it right up and down, and it does get quieter as it moves out of the 20mtr band or the antenna tune. It is around a signal strength of S7, so unless there is a strong station on these freqs I stay clear of them. I don't remember this issue when I had the radio in the car and operated mobile. It seems to disappear when I remove the antenna, so I am making the assumption that it is coming in thorugh the antenna. Things I have tried include putting the radio onto a 12 battery supply and switching off all power into the house. This inlcuded turning off the mains. The interference was still there. I am in the country, so there is not too much housing around, but I do have a neigbour about 25mtrs away. There will be no point going next door and seeing if this is where it's coming from (read into that as you can). I do have another noise which moves between 14.065 and 14.091, (on both radios) which I did find out ot be my computer in the radio room. Even with the computer off it appears the switch-mode is still alive because when I turned the power off at the wall, after about 10secs the noise is gone and the freq is now usable, it does not remove the problem I have above. As I mentioned I turned everything off at the mains, still there. I will post this on these two groups as it deals with both the radio and when using digital modes. Is there some way to quieten the power supply so I can use the computer when operating my radio/s? I have a TS-830 on the desk but I must confess I have not tried to see if it is on it (just thought about it). Might give that a go on my next rest days, actually I just went and checked it now (while I was thinking about it) and the 61Khz step noise is on the TS-830 too, so it is not the radio. So it is coming from some man-made device. If anyone ahs any ideas I'd be grateful, trying to get back onto the bands after about 3 years of inactivity. Hi All, I am hoping with the number of members in this group that someone might be able to answer my question. Many years ago, as we know radio started off with CW, then AM was developed, with an improvement to only use one part of the AM carrier to produce SSB with carrier or SSB suppressed carrier. Then somebody developed FM. Now in my view this gives 4 actual modes? But I see you say (Maybe), we have all the digital modes. But are these actually modes? Why I ask and the reason for the question, is these are still using one of the current 4 above, over a SSB carrier for the likes of PSK-31, SSTV etc, or FM for the likes of Packet. So will the future be able to bring us anything new that will improve the usablility of radio? Doing a search on Google brings up thousands of hits, but none actually answer the questions, most also class each digital type as a mode. Would be very interested in your thoughts. Andrew, Now that you mention it I have heard of DSB suppressed carrier, but none of the others. But isn't DSB acutally AM? Either with or without the carrier? I will have to look at this. Andy, When are you most on the air? I have gotten my shack up and the radio working. I just need to do a test on PSK-31 on 20mtrs. I have seen a number of stations but I can not get any reply. Have listened to my outgoing signal and it sounds okay, no ALC on the meter and putting out both 20 and 50 watts. Can read most signals. Just want to see if it's getting out okay. Hi All, I believe I saw a small program out there that would allow you to set the different levels for a soundcard for different software packages. The problem I have is I am running HRD with DM-780, MMSSTV and MMTTY, and each of these have slightly different soundcard settings for RX and TX, but mainly the TX side. G'Day All, I am trying to get more to grips with all the digital modes to operate. I currently run HRD w DM780 and MFTTY software on my computer (Love HRD) I have used DM780 in the past but it was just plug-in and see if it ran, which it did and was able to make some contacts. I have since moved into a new house and have not had the time to set the radio shack up. This is now coming together and hopefully should be back on the air in a week or two. I want to understand the digital operation more so I can understand what is happening and how to make contacts correctly. Let me start with what I am seeing when starting. DM780 through the sound card to Kenwood TS-480S/AT, in the data socket. When I start DM780 and look at the screen, waterfall I see the data mode, in this case PSK31 on 14.081.5, but the radio is showing 14.080. I remember when I first was using PSK31 I could see other stations within the window of the waterfall, they could of been on 14.082.5 or 14.080.6 and that I was able to leave the radio freq alone and just click on the other station and then make a contact. What I was interested in, is, should I have moved the radio freq. to pull the station onto the 1.5Khz above the. (Don't know if I explained that correctly) Also there is heaps mentioned about NO ALC, I have set my TS-480S/AT to the requirements for digital mode, and even dropped the input down further. I was still getting some ALC when in TX. No-body said I was producing a bad signal so I don't know if I was TXing right. [digitalradio] Sound Card Interfacing.
Hi All, I am wondering if it is possible to use one of these USB headsets as my sound interface to my TS-480S/AT, with some modification (cut the headset off). I brought one of these awhile ago cheap (on special), a PowerWave Speaker/Mic headset, and have been using it on my computer for Skype. Audio sounds good, so thought I might use it for digital modes, and would allow me to switch over with different computers easily. I am guessing the sound card gear is in the bubble unit along the cable, so all I would need to do is ensure I have speaker and mic from inside the headset itself. I would like to buy a proper USB computer/radio interface, but this is low on my priority list (wife wants new stuff for the new house). So if this works, I might try and go this way. Anyone done it this way? If so, how did it work out? If not, anything I should be looking at? Now after all that I need to get an HF antenna up, and get some radios on air. Thanks in advance. [digitalradio] Digital Radio - Well Broadcast
Hi All, Most likely a little off topic, but it is still to do with Digital Radio. With the advent of Digital TV, I am surprised that there has not been more work done on the Broadcast side for normal radio. I would of thought that this would of been easier to implement and install, don't have to send satellites up, could all be done on the ground. Maybe I am wrong, and this is already here, just that I don't see too much mentioned about it. Maybe this group can help shed some light on it. Imagine the audio quality, being able to listen to the station you are on for the whole trip, not having to change to a different station when you get out of range. I do know there is some form of satellite radio in North America, but I have not heard too many good words about it :( So, is there anything being developed, or are we still having to use old analog AM FM. [digitalradio] Kenwood TS-480S/AT ALC Problems in Digital Modes.
Hi All, I have sent this message to the follow 3 groups, as my problem is with all 3. After receiving some information on setting up my Kenwood TS-480S/AT for digital modes, and that I should see none or minimum ALC (1 bar), I am unable to get my setting as they should. I have tried everything, as follows, 1. Audio into the rig via the data port. 2. Have adjusted the data audio in via menu 46, Data Audio In. 3. Adjusted the audio levels out from the Audio card. (Did find that adjusting the level ere too much upset the quality of the data audio) 4. I have even tried adjusting the mic level, but this did not help (I guess thes is on a different line) 5. I can not see any settings to adjust the ALC, or turn it off. I have tried all the modes I have on my computer, MixW, HamPAL, PSK31, and Ham Radio Deluxe w PSK31, and they are the same. Any help in bringing this TX into spec would be great. And yes I have read the manual (radio) and the instructions for all programs a number of times now. Hi Guys (and Gals) With regard to Bad PSK signals, will this be affected if the TX station is close by? A normal SSB station close by will generate a wide signal if close by. Why I ask. Yesterday, while tuning around I found 2 strong signals in the waterfall, and one could see the main signal, and then 2 spurries either side. I was able to decode the PSK without any problems. The waterfall was thick in display, showing the signal was strong. I even listened to the received signal, and it sounded okay. IMD was around -25dB Both stations were close, like within 1200kms, one in ZL7 (a portable KH station) and the other a VK4. I am in ZL1, just south of Auckland, NZ. All the other signals in the waterfall looked good, and they were JA's, RU's, and some European. So what is a good PSK signal? And in saying that how would I know if mine is running correctly? I run about 40-50 watts into a Kenwood TS-480S/AT, and have used my ear to determine the TX audio. I have not had any complaints about it. I tried it with Win98 and failed to be able to transmit. I WAS able to receive pictures and I've been told that wasn't quite normal. Others have not been able to get Digi going on anything other than at least XP; the programs allegedly have been written for no less than that OS. Others have said that you need at least a 1 Ghz machine to make things go in Digi... I haven't seen that myself - my DigiTRX is working just fine. I only need to acquire a linear amp to get the transmit going. I run DigiTRX myself on a PIII @650 Mhz..an oldie. Personally, I like DigiTRX over the current offerings but I've never been one to follow the pack as it were. What do you mean the constellation never stabilizes? Can you pass along your settings as you have them? I noticed that Andrew sent you a message. He's pretty good with the Digi thingies. With Hampal the pictures do not show up as a default unless you receive ALL the segments. There is a setting that you can change that will let you see the pictures even if you miss a few segments. Additionally, Hampal's default is , I think, that received pictures do not automatically pop on to your screen, To do that you will need a picture viewer called infraview ( http://www.irfanview.com/ ) . Download and install infranview and then tell Hampal Infranview's path, then pictures should 'pop' up when complete. Simon HB9DRV, and Members, If you are reading. I run your Radio control program, and have recently been trying to use your PSK31 program that came with the install. Using a TS-480S/AT. The problem I am having is TX'ing. The radio switches to TX, via control PTT, but no audio, no output power reading (via inline watt meter). When I check the audio out via the PC attached speakers I get good audio. I go and load MixW, and this works okay, TX audio out the radio, checked by the TX monitor and the TX meter reading.
