Re: [IxDA Discuss] Nonprofit vs. for Profit for the UX Designer
Just to chime in a bit here... since 90% of the work we do at fluency has been in the non-profit area I figured I'd share what I've learned. The one thing we often lose sight of which I think is true for for-profit or non-profit organizations is the inability of us as designers (myself included) to make an adequate BUSINESS CASE for UX work. In larger organizations where budgets may be a bit more free flowing the use and value of research is understood if from no other point in its ability to avoid wasting resources. Ironically in non-profit orgs where resources can be scarce and fundraising may take up as much of 60% of the organizations time they tend to have the most resistance to anything PERCEIVED as inflating project budgets. I'd argue though that for the non-profit org justifications for expenditures need precisely that, justification. Undoubtedly, there are many, many short sighted orgs who don't see the value of understanding their constituency, what their needs are and how those needs can be handled via the orgs website in a way that saves the org precious resources, those organizations are not what I'm talking about as their very approach dooms them to irrelevance at best. What I am talking about are organizations that are well meaning but honestly don't see where the value lies in doing this (UX) work which often means not enough emphasis is made to illustrate where that value lies. In my experience, whether you do it verbally (worst way), in writing (a little better) or visually in a diagram (best) you have to show (assuming the project is worth it) where the ineffienciencies are, what their audience wants and where the current website falls. This can be done with a simple survey or focus group session--both of which are techniques you can break apart from an entire redesign and use to justify moving forward. Also I find abandoning our jargon for their jargon or business speak (within reason) works well. If you talk about how by focusing on the brand experience UX can improve their organization (via customer service, fundraising, promotion, constituent connection, RD etc.) and possibly save it from oblivion and trust me you'll have their attention. In the end I find the job to vividly persuasively communicate the work or the value of the work ultimately lies with us and this is true of non-profit or any other business we're approaching (especially in this economic climate) as clients. Re: [IxDA Discuss] DISCUSS: Electronic medical records: bad, ugly, and dangerous?
Thanks Kim for broaching this subject, it's such an extremely important issue. The things I think about the most is access workflow. As it stands we have ZERO access (at least conveniently) to the medical of children, or family or ourselves. Also regarding workflow (or work modeling) this is one of the biggest reasons (seemingly) why EMR is so challenging, they seem hellbent on bending (healthcare) staff around the software. Also the workflow of hospitals with large staffs resources is one thing but what about your dentist, private doctor, pediatrician, neighborhood clinic, chiropractor/PT etc. all of these healthcare professionals have their own processes, ways of working preferences as it pertains to data input (not to mention how their current records get converted). Again this is a major area of concern and an area where I see UX Interaction designers literally being able to save lives based on the work done. Much of the EMR software pkgs that I've been researching look straight out of the 90's (or earlier), to take a page from Mr. Cooper's canonical work, the Inmates are truly Running the Asylum... but luckily at least this time we know hopefully can change work to change it. Kudos to those of you fighting the good fight in this area, you're needed. I hope to one day to join your ranks. - Fritz P.S. - Btw, here are two good resources on the EMR/EHR topic: 1) CBS News' David Pogue video report on EHR/EMR (about 9min): http://j.mp/4n3yIu 2) Fast Company the good folks at frog design (who clearly see this opportunity) just recently published a bit of good reading on the subject here: http://www.fastcompany.com/future-of-health-care . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Re: [IxDA Discuss] IxDA Mentorship Program - We Need Mentors!
Hey Jon, just briefly is there anyway to define a bit more (bullet points) what the requirements to a) be a mentor are as in years of experience, project types handled, project sizes handled, education, etc. and b) what would the time commitment look like? Speaking personally (although I don't think I'm at the mentor level) this would help clarify and define things more IMHO for folks trying to make the determination as well as to help mentees match their need to someone with that level of expertise. Hear, hear Jared. Very well put. The post to me almost seemed like it was made to raise ire or to purposefully be controversial for the sake of being so. This is why (with real work to tend to) IMHO it warranted no real response as it seemed discourse was never the true goal of the author and his mind was quite made up. Re: [IxDA Discuss] We don't make consumer products, hence no need for a User Centered Design development process.
As someone who's been strangely drawn to reading the posts around this topic, very well put Andrew. To me, much of this comes down the problem you're solving and its context both of which can suggest a methodology or technique neither of which can guarantee success and they're countless examples (Apple, Craigslist, Google, 37 Signals, MySpace, etc.) that have shown this. We are increasingly moving towards a world where the ability for products to solve human problems cannot be assured with one method or school of thought and you have to insure the principles one is using to guide a design process are malleable enough to adjust to various environments (and this said as a happy UCD, IxD UX koolaid drinker). Re: [IxDA Discuss] UCD vs Design Again? Really?!?
Yep Andrei this reminds me of the oft-mentioned Henry Ford quote (paraphrased) regarding the production of the automobile... If I would've asked people what they wanted they would've said faster horses... I agree Apple may not follow UCD approaches to the letter (as we might recognize) but they seem to be on the same track 37 Signals is on, which is a design products that solve problems I am experiencing... which to me is UCD to an extent coupled with design towards an innovation that may not yet be understood (for better or worse)... Not sure if I'd call it 'higher' but it's certainly a slightly different way of problem-solving through design which is the point I was making earlier. Just a thought.- Fritz . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [IxDA Discuss] Exploring mobile gesture design at Nokia--In the wild
Just saw this across the Twitter stream. It’s a video of Nokia design team doing gestural design research for a new device. While I’m not sure if it’s an ad or an attempt at a B2B viral video it’s still somewhat interesting nonetheless. As a super-proponent of design through user research it was great to get a glimpse at how Nokia (or at least a part of their team--possibly) goes about it. It’s a very guerrilla approach that I think can be very effective in some cases. It would’ve been great to know more about their process before hitting the streets if/how they profiled users before approaching folks on the street or if that was even necessary. Either way great stuff which bodes very well for the work we’re all engaged in. Take a look http://bit.ly/6Fg53 Comments welcomed. - Fritz Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! [IxDA Discuss] What are the elements of a useful APP experience?
Ok so now that Verizon just announced their app store (http://bit.ly/jAC6p) and Nokia (Ovi store - http://bit.ly/4l41aM), Blackberry (http://bit.ly/iz9kK), Windows (http://bit.ly/uDgO1), Google Android (http://bit.ly/rXTXc) and of course Apple all have their app stores can we agree that the APP is becoming (or has become) the new AD? If so, what does this mean from a standpoint of designing “app” experiences that are worth engaging in. As users (READ all of us) become more savvy in discerning valuable experiences from those not worth evaluating past screenshots (am I the only that does this?) how do we make mobile apps branded or otherwise that are meaningful, commercially, mindful and fun? Is the solution in borrow from our brethren in game design, product design disciplines---plus what else? Bascially, what do you all consider key elements for designing for mad, mad, mad app world that’s coming or that’s here. My thoughts are on the following elements (all of which we’re familiar with): • Knowledge (of brand, environment goals) • Findability (how do I discover it?--WOM?) • Anticipation (of user needs throughout flow) • Participation (by brand—as in interactive feedback) • Sustainability (impact on the owner—can it be maintained?) • Sharing (can I share it easily?) • Touch level/depth (similar to click path--how many does it take to do what I want?) • Optimization (how quickly is it modified/improved?) Any comments on elements would be welcomed.- Fritz (DISCLAIMER: This info is for a new course I’m proposing to NYU for marketers to help them better “speak” the language experience design which I submit they’ll have to do in order to remain relevant in their said role---not to mention to stop pissing off their design dev teams with meaningless feature requests.) [IxDA Discuss] [EVENT] DELVE:UI 2-Day Masterclass on Web Interface Design - NYC - 8/5 8/6
Hello guys - We’ve been working with Adobe, AIGA/NY the Freelancers Union to put together a “pop-up” event of sorts. Basically it will be a 2-day series of workshops and masterclasses all focused on web interface design---called DELVE:UI (http://www.delvenyc.com). The goal is to take a sort of Agile approach to events/conferences with each DELVE being: * small (150 max), * frequent (hopefully at least 4x per year) * local and * affordable ($595 for 2 days—roughly 50% less than is typical w/15% discount for IxDA members). The ultimate goal being to create an intimate setting by embracing those four aforementioned constraints and hopefully growing to cover other (crowdsourced) topics and locales. As an IxDA member and on the local leader here in NYC, just wanted to open this to anyone in NYC or the surrounding area. This is NOT a conference in the traditional sense (due to size and subject—there are no tracks) so if there are folks local that would like to attend PLEASE RSVP at the site (http://www.delvenyc.com)---NOTE: RSVP closes next week. As for speakers we have confirmed: Lou Rosenfeld, Jina Bolton, Robert Hoekman, Joshua Porter, Todd Zaki Warfel Theresa Neil, Liz Danzico (who’ll be interviewing Jason Santa Maria) and a DEMO of Adobe Flash Catalyst (an IxD prototyping tool) as well as others, looking forward to seeing any of you guys interested there... [IxDA Discuss] Layar app - What do you all think this portends for IxD?
Hey all - Saw a very brief demo of a *reality* browser on TV last week via Brink on the Science Channel (which btw also had an excellent demo by Bill Buxton the MS Office Labs 2019 vision--posted elsewhere on this forum). Basically it seems to be mobile browser (served as an app) which in real time mashes-up digital content (information) and physical context---it's called Layar and seems to be live in the Netherlands. Very, very cool stuff was curious to know if there were any thoughts or if anyone has had first hand experience with something like this. It's just got my creative, IxD juices flowing with the possibilities. Re: [IxDA Discuss] Layar app - What do you all think this portends for IxD?
True that would be pretty interesting. From what I can see though tying devices to help add meaning to the physical world is where (smart) mobile pretty much has to be headed--as in location aware apps now coming to market for the iPhone. Not to mention something as simple as Google Maps which functions similarly on most smart phones. This is just an additional layer (or Layar) that we'll hopefully be able to consider when designing applications for mobile (as in phones or to your point ultra-portable mobile [netbook] computers). Can't wait. - Fritz . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
