Re: [IxDA Discuss] pattern suggestions for personalisation

2009-09-29 Thread Julia Slavin
Hi Jax,

I think that most of modern e-commerce websites allow certain amount
of personalization.

I tend dividing parameters by which it's possible to personalize the
site into two main group - Not logged in customers and Logged in
customers.

Not logged in customers.
For all your visitors you could use data available from your web
statistics and servers logs. For example, without having personal
information about your visitors you still could group them by:
* Language (browser/OS settings)
* Country (IP)
* Flash player version
* Screen resolution
* Date  time
* Referral
* Last visit date
* Keyword referred

Not logged in customers.
If you have a log-in mechanism and store personal information about
your customers, you have almost infinite ways to customize your
website. Depending on your user profiles you could group them by:
* Money spent on your website
* Money left in their wallet
* Level of their loyalty
* Usage frequency
* Last time purchase
* Preferred products
* and many more depending on your website.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Forms as gates to further information

2009-08-15 Thread Julia Slavin
Jennifer,

Can you please elaborate on the original purpose of that section of
the website? I'd like to better understand the desired result the
your stakeholder is willing to achieve. Is it really that the visitor
is forced to fill out the form in order to download the paper? Or, is
the paper given out to the visitor in order for them to fill the
form?

1) If the purpose is to fill out the form, then the described
solution is 100% valid. The paper is only needed to attract the
visitors and motivate them to fill the form. * This could be done in
order to conduct research about different segments of your visitors,
gather more data about browsing scenarios, initiate viral marketing
and tons of other reasons.

2) If the purpose is to download the paper, then you might want to
make the process as much simple and slight as possible. I think it is
Ok to say Read study for that sort of pages. It certainly is not
sign up nor log in. So, what would you suggest? Saying Fill
in this form to download our paper? I agree that nowadays many
websites behave the same way, so it might have became sort of
standard for certain segments of visitors.

Anyways... as a compromise, you might want run an A/B test and simply
measure the bottom line results. Of course, that may be done after you
find out the purpose of those pages as I described above.

Good luck,

Julia Slavin

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Usability review of sharepoint application

2009-08-09 Thread Julia
Sometimes you cannot visit your customers from any reason (which would
no doubt be the preferred option).

If you cannot conduct focus groups and observe your customers using
the app, then:

* Talk to the support representative and ask them which issues get
the most volume
* Listen to the marketing people and their complaints on why the tool
isn't perfect
* Use Web analitics software to learn about your visitors behavioral
patterns
* Publish online survey and ask your customers for a few minutes to
help you improve the service
* Use any possible (and impossible) way to gather as much information
as you can

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Usability of pre-filled versus empty in content capture software

2009-07-25 Thread Julia
Hi Phillip,

I'm not aware of any academic research in this field, but I've been
involved in couple of projects with similar issues.

In one project, which was about UI design for banking application,
we've decided to not automatically fill in the entries, although
there was really insignificant chance to make a mistake. It just was
very crucial that the user not only fills in the correct data, but
also is aware of the answers he/she provided.

To me, it's like adding fields for email/password verification to a
registration form, and then saving user their time by automatically
filling in those entries.

I think that if it is really crucial to get the correct data and keep
customers aware of their answers, it's better not to fill in the data
automatically. If there's really huge amount of the data to provide,
and it can be fixed if wrong answers are provided, then I think it's
Ok to do that if you clearly indicate that the data was filled in by
the system.

Good luck,
Julia.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Tag cloud generators

2009-07-25 Thread Julia
Hi Sarah,

The first link tagcloud-generator didn't work for me. I tried
both HTML and Flash versions, but none has generated a cloud.

The tocloud worked nice, but I felt a little bit over busy with
the amount of functions. In addition, I didn't figure out how to
change the effect. Or, perhaps it just didn't work.

The tag-cloud was easy to use and produced very nice cloud.

Others contained only single words and no expressions and didn't
filter out 3-or-less-letters words.

To summarize - the tocloud worked is best in terms of
performance. It doesn't count insignificant words of two letters,
processes expressions and has an easy to use interface. If I only
figured out how the effects work, I wouldn't feel like a loser.

Nice list of generators, thanks for publishing them Sarah.

Good luck,
Julia.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Online customer service saves call center costs?

2009-07-19 Thread Julia
Hi Elizabeth,

At my company, we integrated RightNow web solution a while ago. I
can't tell you exactly how much money we save, but it works not bad
at all. You can see here some examples that make sense:
http://www.rightnow.com/crm-suite-web-self-service.php

I don't know if it's possible to find out exactly how much you can
save, because that would depend on license, development and
integration cost, chosen solution, implementation method and many
other aspects.

Good luck,
Julia.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Type ahead vs. auto fill

2009-07-13 Thread Julia
I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with Sarah.

Auto fill - is the functionality provided by browser or some 3d party
plugins such as Google toolbar. This functionality let's you create
personal profile and store some of the frequently used details on
your PC (for example: First/Last name, phone numbers, email address
etc). Once you arrive at a web page that gathers such details, the
browser (or Google toolbar in our example) recognize this, and colors
the fields that can be auto filled in other color (by default -
pale yellow) to let you know that you can use the auto fill option.

The Type Ahead functionality is similar to Sarah's example, but by
default it wouldn't include any additional popups/windows/menus. The
classic example - is Google search. When you type in your keyword, the
system automatically pulls up options that may be relevant for your
search.

These are different behaviors and may be used together if you have
long list of options that do not appear in your user profile and thus
cannot be auto filled.
