[slim] Re: Problem connecting to SlimServer with wireless SB2
I am now listening to glorious music pouring through my Eton 11.2 speakers coming from. you guessed it -- the SB2!!! In my case there were several things going simultaneously and a good, patient, computer programmer friend came over and plugged away till suddenly, it worked!!! Problem was, we're still not completely sure what it was. It came down to several things: one, apparently, was a firewall issue (despite the fact that I'd tried it previously with firewall completely disabled), a DHCP issue, and a cleared cache issue. He struck on the correct combination of all of these variables and, eureka, music! I want to thank all of those who tried to help me with this for their time and patience and wish that I could offer better assistance to others with the same kind of problem. I also hope you all with the same problem are lucky enough to have a friend like mine who can come over and save the day. :) I'd also like to say that once I got this thing operational, man, was I psyched! I've alrady EAC'ed many CD's onto my new external drive and am listening to it as I write this. It rocks! Very, very cool, indeed. [slim] Mute button?
Ever since I got my first SqueezeBox, I've wondered why Stop and Mute buttons were not provided on the remote, especially since there are three empty key spaces available on the remote. These just seem like very logical buttons to find on a remote control. Also, if they were simply overlooked, why were they not added when SqueezeBox2 was released? I'm aware that Stop functionality can be invoked by pressing and holding the Pause key, but this is not "discoverable" (i.e. not without reading the documentation, anyway). I just bought a SqueezeBox2 for my dad and this is one of the usability issues that arose. Anyway, at least Stop can still be invoked from the remote in some fashion, but why is there no Mute button (i.e. to set the volume to zero and then back to the previous volume setting if pressed again)? I appreciate that in some situations Pause can be used, but it is not always desirable to pause the stream (e.g. when synched with another player or when listening to a live radio stream). There are some instances where you really just want the volume muted. Is there a mute function that can be mapped to remote? -- rds ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Change in browse behavior in latest beta
I just downloaded the latest beta version of SlimServer to be able to use the new SqueezeNetwork capabilities and noticed that the behavior of the various "Browse..." menu items has changed. When setting up a new SqueezeBox, I would normally remove all menu items except for "Browse Playlists" and "Internet Radio". The "Browse Playlists" menu would allow me to access all folders and any music tracks and/or playlists within them. This has changed such that only playlists are now listed, and without any directory structure whatsoever. This is fine if you just want a global listing of all playlists, but it's useless if you've structured/sorted the playlists according to listener, type, etc. The "Browse Music Folder" menu item would seem to offer what I want, except that it does not allow one to view or access the individual entries in a playlist. All you can do is view the name of a playlist and then play it in it's entirety (either in order or shuffled). In my case I have separate playlists for radio stations by type (e.g. Talk/News, Music, International, Police Calls, etc.) and need to be able to select an individual radio station within the playlist. As mentioned, I used to be able to do exactly what I want using "Browse Playlists" but this no longer works since directory structure is ignored and I have far too many playlists for a "global playlists" feature to be of any use. I understand changing "Browse Playlists" to provide a global listing of playlist files, but I do not understand not being able to select individual playlist entries using "Browse Music Folder". Is this a bug or by design? Thanks to anyone who can shed some light on this. Dean -- rds ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

After recently buying an SB2, I moved the old SB1 and tried to run it wirelessly only to find that it would no longer connect to the server. Re: [slim] RSS Screensaver with brightness=0
Yes at present the display data continues to be sent to the player even if brightness is 0 - its simply that the player doesn't display it. Perhaps you could raise a bug to record it as an enhancement request (though I am not sure of the simplet way of dealing with it at present.) Adrian I use the RSS screensaver when my SB2 is in standby mode, but I tend to leave the brightness level at 0. This lets me quickly call up the headlines by pressing brightness, but means I don't have the display scrolling constantly when the device is "off". I've got my wireless router in a visible location at the moment, and I've just noticed that the activity lights go like crazy when the only device active is the SB2 and it is off (brightness==0). Re: [slim] Apple lossless on SB 2: is there any advantage with the native FLAC?
Quoting Jim McCall <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: > Is there any advantage with Apple Lossless files using a SB2 vs. SB1? > well, if you can handle uncompressed over your wireless setup, or have it wired, then SB1 will be less intense as far as CPU since it only uncompresses without having to compress back to wav (unless you disable aac->flc for sb2). The analogue audio out is FAR better on the SB2 if you plan to use that > I know it natively decodes flac. > > If there is not advantage, what is the advantage when using FLAC as a > source? HAving flac means less cpu usage on the server and, yes 40-60% savings on bandwidth. Audio quality of flac vs apple lossless is really an unending argument :) -kdf ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
