[slim] Re: Problem connecting to SlimServer with wireless SB2

2005-07-02 Thread awm

I am now listening to glorious music pouring through my Eton 11.2
speakers coming from. you guessed it -- the SB2!!!

In my case there were several things going simultaneously and a good,
patient, computer programmer friend came over and plugged away till
suddenly, it worked!!! Problem was, we're still not completely sure
what it was.

It came down to several things: one, apparently, was a firewall issue
(despite the fact that I'd tried it previously with firewall completely
disabled), a DHCP issue, and a cleared cache issue. He struck on the
correct combination of all of these variables and, eureka, music!

I want to thank all of those who tried to help me with this for their
time and patience and wish that I could offer better assistance to
others with the same kind of problem. I also hope you all with the
same problem are lucky enough to have a friend like mine who can come
over and save the day. :)

I'd also like to say that once I got this thing operational, man, was I
psyched! I've alrady EAC'ed many CD's onto my new external drive and am
listening to it as I write this. It rocks! Very, very cool, indeed.

for multipul sources option be added to the server so u could point to

[slim] Mute button?

2005-07-02 Thread rds

Ever since I got my first SqueezeBox, I've wondered why Stop and Mute
buttons were not provided on the remote, especially since there are
three empty key spaces available on the remote. These just seem like
very logical buttons to find on a remote control. Also, if they were
simply overlooked, why were they not added when SqueezeBox2 was
released?

I'm aware that Stop functionality can be invoked by pressing and
holding the Pause key, but this is not "discoverable" (i.e. not without
reading the documentation, anyway). I just bought a SqueezeBox2 for my
dad and this is one of the usability issues that arose.

Anyway, at least Stop can still be invoked from the remote in some
fashion, but why is there no Mute button (i.e. to set the volume to
zero and then back to the previous volume setting if pressed again)? I
appreciate that in some situations Pause can be used, but it is not
always desirable to pause the stream (e.g. when synched with another
player or when listening to a live radio stream). There are some
instances where you really just want the volume muted.

Is there a mute function that can be mapped to remote?

[slim] Change in browse behavior in latest beta

2005-07-02 Thread rds

I just downloaded the latest beta version of SlimServer to be able to
use the new SqueezeNetwork capabilities and noticed that the behavior
of the various "Browse..." menu items has changed.

When setting up a new SqueezeBox, I would normally remove all menu
items except for "Browse Playlists" and "Internet Radio". The "Browse
Playlists" menu would allow me to access all folders and any music
tracks and/or playlists within them. This has changed such that only
playlists are now listed, and without any directory structure
whatsoever. This is fine if you just want a global listing of all
playlists, but it's useless if you've structured/sorted the playlists
according to listener, type, etc.

The "Browse Music Folder" menu item would seem to offer what I want,
except that it does not allow one to view or access the individual
entries in a playlist. All you can do is view the name of a playlist
and then play it in it's entirety (either in order or shuffled). In my
case I have separate playlists for radio stations by type (e.g.
Talk/News, Music, International, Police Calls, etc.) and need to be
able to select an individual radio station within the playlist. As
mentioned, I used to be able to do exactly what I want using "Browse
Playlists" but this no longer works since directory structure is
ignored and I have far too many playlists for a "global playlists"
feature to be of any use.

I understand changing "Browse Playlists" to provide a global listing of
playlist files, but I do not understand not being able to select
individual playlist entries using "Browse Music Folder". Is this a bug
or by design?

Thanks to anyone who can shed some light on this.

Dean

[slim] Connection problems? One more thing to check...

2005-07-02 Thread MLM

After recently buying an SB2, I moved the old SB1 and tried to run it
wirelessly only to find that it would no longer connect to the server.
It would find the wireless network, find the server, say it was
connecting, and then go blank.

To make a long and frustrating story short, I had neglected to go back
into the server security settings and add another address for the
additional player. I realized what was going on by running slim.exe
(Windows version) with the --d_http debug flag and seeing attempts at
"unauthorized access."

Just one more thing to check if you're having similar problems.

Yes at present the display data continues to be sent to the player even if brightness is 0 - its simply that the player doesn't

Perhaps you could raise a bug to record it as an enhancement request (though I am not sure of the simplet way of dealing with it at

I use the RSS screensaver when my SB2 is in standby mode, but I tend to
leave the brightness level at 0. This lets me quickly call up the
headlines by pressing brightness, but means I don't have the display
scrolling constantly when the device is "off". I've got my wireless
router in a visible location at the moment, and I've just noticed that
the activity lights go like crazy when the only device active is the
SB2 and it is off (brightness==0). I'm guessing that the scrolling

do nothing when the display is off?

Hey, you're giving the answer yourself:

Nope, this is where you're wrong :-). Use /mnt/sda1/LosslessMusic instead
(as you'd see it in mc's upper left corner). And be sure to match
upper-/lowercase.

Odd things with this SlimCD installation include:
I get a funny keyboard layout which does not seem to change after I
have selected the UK layout

Interesting that's even funny for you. I always thought this was UK - is
it US?

I've no idea what the big button below the little left and right arrows
on the drive status indicator panel is for.

This is the button to mount/unmount. For mounted drives it's green,
unmounted black.

My mouse-pad does not work

On a laptop? Ist it USB (or don't you know)?

You could try to shut down the window manager and go back to the shell
(text mode): right mouseclick on the desktop, "Windowmanager->Exit". Then
run xsetup.sh from the shell. And when you're asked for USB mouse or
IMPS/2 (whatever this is...), try to play with the different options. Then
type "exit" to get back to the graphical environment.

It's worth noting that pipelining is disabled by default in Firefox and
Mozilla as it can cause problems with some web servers. As it's a
hidden pref in Firefox, it won't be on unless you deliberately turned
it on. SlimServer is the first time I've ever seen it cause a problem

[slim] 6.1 smooth scrolling - feeback requested

2005-07-02 Thread Triode

From 6.0 onwards it has been possible to set the smoothness of scrolling text
on a graphics player, SBG or SB2

[player web page - display: set shorter Scroll Rate & and smaller Scroll Pixels]

As of 6.1, setting this to quite slow values including moving one pixel at a time should have minimal performance penalty on the
server, the only issue it has is the additional network bandwidth it creates. There is also a mechanim to prevent network
congestion causing the control connection to a player to block up.

I was therefore wondering whether we should change the default scroll settings for a player so users who don't change the default
settings benefit. This could be differernt for a wireless and non wireless attached players.

So:

1) How many users are using non default scroll settings?

2) How do the following scroll settings work for you:
   Pixels = 1, Rate = 0.01
   Pixels = 1, Rate = 0.02
   Pixels = 2, Rate = 0.04
   Pixels = 4, Rate = 0.08
   Pixels = 5, Rate = 0.10

[as fast settings can use more network bandwidth than streaming as WAV, please
try when playing music!]

It won't alter any server settings. Although the SB2 is likely to be
right back where you started after you reenter all your settings, I'm
with you. If I were having problems that I couldn't quite figure out,
I'd want to start again from scratch. There really aren't that many
settings and it takes only a few minutes to set one up from scratch,
even with wireless settings and WEP key. If you use DHCP it's that
much easier. I'd probably also tell the server to "forget" the player
- once again, there aren't enough settings at the server that you
couldn't reenter them again in couple of minutes.

Question: Would you be interested in a better remote?

- No, I'm happy with the current design
- Yes, it should be included with the SB
- Yes, but I'm willing to buy a "designer" remote as an optional
  extra.

With Unix you always have to mount a device before you can access it.
It's a hang over from the days when tapes and disks had to be loaded
(in the computer room) - well before PnP!

When you mount a device, you mount it 'on' something. So (eg)
/dev/sda1 might be mounted on /mnt/sda1 (the mountpoint), in which case
the path syntax to access the music directory would then be something
like /mnt/sda1/LosslessMusic

(Note the '/' used in Unix rather than '\' in Windows.)

Easiest way to check whether unix 'sees' the drive is to use the 'ls'
command to list the contents of the directory

ls -l /mnt/sda1/LosslessMusic

Can anyone suggest what I might be doing wrong?
I can boot successfully form the SlimCD. I can browse all my drives
using the supplied Midnight Commander, but when I attempt to get
Slimserver to use any drive or folder (at all) on my PC as it's music
folder it just reports it as an invalid directory.
I have been mounting the drives (why do I have to do this?) using the
little button to the left of the arrow buttons on the drive status
indicator panel.

On thing, I'm not too sure of the syntax to reference drives using
Unix. I have tried many variations to get Slimserver to index my
files... should sda1:\LosslessMusic likely to work?

Odd things with this SlimCD installation include:
I get a funny keyboard layout which does not seem to change after I
have selected the UK layout
I've no idea what the big button below the little left and right arrows
on the drive status indicator panel is for.
My mouse-pad does not work

Any help or pointers would be appreciated

unplug the power.
press and hold 'add' while plugging back in. that does a factory reset.
I'm not sure you would want to be doing that unless there was some dire problem.

What you really need is for the web interface to use HTML forms. This
would enable you to do things such as tick the genres you want and say
play, or tick the genres you don't want and say play the rest.

Thanks, but I knew about that one. Pressing and holding power is
pretty much the same as pulling power cable out of the back and putting
it back again. I believe there is a much "nastier" reset that you can
do by holding another key.

Probably. Goto http://www.squeezenetwork.com/ first. And also make
sure you have the latest Slimserver software at
http://www.slimdevices.com/downloads/SlimServer_v6.1b1/

Re: [slim] Apple lossless on SB 2: is there any advantage with the native FLAC?

well, if you can handle uncompressed over your wireless setup, or have it wired,
then SB1 will be less intense as far as CPU since it only uncompresses without
having to compress back to wav (unless you disable aac->flc for sb2). The
analogue audio out is FAR better on the SB2 if you plan to use that

AAC might be preferred if you are tied to iTunes or iPOD's. HAving flac means
less cpu usage on the server and, yes 40-60% savings on bandwidth. Audio
quality of flac vs apple lossless is really an unending argument :)

I got quite excited by this. However, Slimserver does not seem able to read
my Maxtor One Touch drive even though it is recognised as sda1 and I appear
to be able to mount it.
