What I meant by block level is that although SANmelody runs on Windows,
it does not put any kind of signature on the disk. It is served as raw
blocks. Therefore, it can create and serve disks to any operating
system (well, any that has either a Fibre Channel or an iSCSI driver
written for it) including Windows, Linux, various flavors of Unix,
Novell, Mac, and even VMware. Each of those can use virtual disks as if
you actually plugged a physical drive into it.

Would it be fair to describe it as a lower cost, DIY, potentially
higher performance alternative to a standalone iSCSI system (such as
Promise)?

I haven't used iSCSI yet myself but it seems like a sound concept...
RAID subsystems work great but are too expensive on a per-GB basis for

If you ask have I done anything special recently before the occurrence.
Well, I tried the 6.2 nightly on the same PC (I uninstalled 6.1.1 then
installed 6.2). This involves firmware upgrade to 16. The key feature I
was looking for in 6.2 was not working correctly so I performed a
rollback to 6.1.1. All firmware updates were successful.

The rollback was ok. The SB2 worked fine. I started noticing the weird
problem only after the upgrade and downgrade exercise. Have I done
anything wrong in the process?

At the lowest entry point, it would be fair to say what you mentioned
above, with the addition that it is much easier to create and allocate
disks on the fly and with no disruption using SANmelody as opposed to a
standalone solution.

For SMB's and Enterprise, the fact that they can keep their storage
management practice in place while upgrading underlying hardware, and
also use different manufacturers storage arrays is a huge benefit.
(When you upgrade a storage array you also throw away the software
functionality which is bound within the hardware as opposed to ugrading
the server as with you would with most applcations.)

Regarding iSCSI, we have found that the performance approximates that
of FC at the 1GB level (without using TOE's).

REV drive and a few REV disks stored at a friends house in event of
fire or external hard drive etc..

A REV drive only appears to hold 35GB, so for 250GB you'll need 6 disks,
and it looks like the list price for this is nearly $600.

A much better idea (IMHO) is an external USB attached hard disk.
You can probably pick up a 250GB (or bigger) disk, and put it in
a USB case for about $150. You can still disconnect the drive
and take it somewhere else for safety if you want to and you
don't have to faff around with multiple disks etc.

Depends on how paranoid you are. I just keep the original CDs and will
re-rip if I have to.

The cheapest practical approach is probably to get another 300GB disk
and copy all the files over to it. It will take a long time, many hours,
maybe a couple of days, depending.on lots of things.

Using something like DVDs is impractical, it would take 100 or more of
them. Whether you want external, internal, etc. is more of a personal
decision.

Of course, you should do backups and then take the backup media offsite,
even if you just take them to work and put them in a drawer.

[slim] Re: How to find my iTunes Playlists ?

2005-08-23 Thread mrmattis

There is no use iTunes section in my slimserver menu. The iTunes
plugin is enabled.

Here is an answer I got on mail, but I have not tried this solution
yet.

Hi,

We've encountered a couple of problems that seem to occur when iTunes
is being used but the library or XML file have been moved from their
default locations. It can also cause the 'Use iTunes' option to
vanish...

To get iTunes recognized again on this system, we should:
- stop slimserver by right-clicking the system tray icon
- remove the slimserver.pref file (in C:\Program
Files\SlimServer\server\)
- remove the slimserversql.db file (in C:\Program
Files\SlimServer\server\cache\)
- restart the server
- go in to Server Settings and turn Use iTunes on.

If the Use iTunes option is still not present, do the following:
- go to server settings - itunes
- specify itunes xml file location manually (example: C:\Documents and
Settings\Username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music
Library.xml)
- specifying the alternate music folder location
- setting it to specify itunes library location manually
- restart slimserver
- rescan music library from server settings with the clear cache
checkbox checked

If Use iTunes still does not show up:
- stop the server
- click start
- click run
- type in 'services.msc' and hit enter
- find slimserver in the list and double-click it
- click Log On, and set it to Log On to your username
- specify your password and verify it. then click apply and close out
services
- restart SlimServer using the system tray icon

If you are running Windows, I'd recommend buying another hard drive of
same controller type and same or greater size. Also get a removable
disc tray (these cost about $20) and Norton Ghost 2003. Create a
bootable Ghost floppy or CD-R, then as often as you like, power-down,
insert your backup disc, power up with the Ghost disc, clone the drive,
power-down, remove backup disc and store in secure location, remove the
Ghost disc, power-up. For me, using 80GB UATA-100 drives, a 60GB data
backup takes about 25 minutes. Easy as cake.

[slim] Re: Backup: REV drive or external HD?

2005-08-23 Thread JulianL

I respectfully disagree with Pat. I am backing up to DVD+R, although I
admit that this is a hundred times more convenient if done at the same
time as ripping your collection in the first place. I might make a
different decision if I already had all the rips done.

I'm finding that one DVD+R is holding anywhere between 12 and 16 CDs in
FLAC format which, at half an hour per CD to rip, fix up tags, download
cover art, etc is about the limit to what my patience will allow me to
rip in a day. This means however that I have found a system that works
perfectly for me. I rip about 15 CDs during a day and then just before
I go to bed I set a DVD backup going to create the next DVD in my
backup set and do a read-back verification on the media. I'm also
keeping a simple text document that records which CDs are archived onto
each DVD so that if I have a localised corruption then I know which DVD
to pull out to recover a file or directory.

Since the backup happens while I sleep and is interleaved with my
ripping activities it effectively takes me no time at all. I only have
about 700 CDs in my collection and I'm estimating about 50 DVDs but
even at UK prices this is only costing me about $17 in blanks (and
they're not bargain basement blanks, they're top rated media) and you
can get very nice 100 CD/DVD storage wallets to hold them all in one
neat case that fits on a bookshelf.

Once I've caught up and ripped/archived my entire collection then as I
buy new stuff I'll rip it and add the newly ripped CDs to my text file
under the category un-archived. Once my list of un-archived CDs gets
to 16 (or whatever fills a blank DVD) then I'll burn them onto a new
DVD and reset my un-archived list to empty.

As with others, I always have my original CDs as the ultimate backup
(and legal proof of ownership).

If I install the 6.2 beta will it treat duplicate album titles by
different artists as separate items

I didn't get an answer to this yesterday so I just went ahead and tried
the beta. The answer is no. So why was 6.2 beta suggested to me? It
actually makes things worse than before.

I took the album titles 'X' and 'Stand Up' out of the common titles
listing, wiped and rescanned, and they are are still grouped under one
album with 6.2. The responses in this thread led me to believe this
would not be the case.

I left the album title 'Shine' listed under common album titles and now
it is listed 3 times when it only should be 2 albums (by Cyndi Lauper
and Daniel Lanois). For some reason the Daniel Lanois album is split up
with half the songs under one entry for 'Shine' and half under the
another. I've looked at the tags and they are correct.

Also in this 6.2 beta I can no longer generate a MusicMagic mix either
from the WebUI or from the player.

If you're asking to match the video from your computer (powerDVD) to audio
delivered via a powerDVD - squeezebox2 - stereo setup then the short
answer is that it's not possible/feasible. Please see this bug:
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=643

Routing audio output from an application to the squeezebox is certainly
possible (see the bug listing for a couple of suggestions), but the
squeezebox is not really natively designed for this and there would be
nightmarish issues related to delay and buffering that would render matching
audio to the projected image nearly impossible.

I agree with the last couple of posts, tweaking the inevitable tag
errors is the big problem (what, you don't get your tags right first
time, every time? Oops, nor do I!). The way I incorporate this into my
DVD backup scheme is that whenever I discover a tagging error I fix it
on my hard drive and then document the fix in the text file where I
have the catalogue of which CDs are stored on which backup DVD, e.g.
Mr Lucky [ Genre set to Blues ]. If I get to about 5 fixes up on a
DVD then I'll probably recut the DVD.

Ultimately I definitely agree with Pat, there is no consensus. All I
would say is that, if you're starting out your Slim Devices adventures

a DVD writer on your system, then I suggest my system as a cheapskate's
solution to the backup problem.

I was going to roll back to 6.1.2, but I now I don't want to give up
the mix filters with MusicMagic. What else can I do to help you guys
fix the duplicate albums problem?

I use this very nice piece of Windows software called Second Copy.

a destination folder. The destination can be on another hard disk or
even another computer on your LAN. Then you just tell it to keep the
two in sync. So I simply put additional music files in my Slimserver
music folder hierarchy. Then, silently, at night, Second Copy copies
over just the new or changed files. Works great. Never gets in the
way. Yeah, I suppose I could have written a perl script to do
something similar, but Second Copy is dirt cheap and works really well.

Wow! They charge $30 for a GUI on top of robocopy? I'm in the wrong
business.

than the BBC.

[slim] Re: How to find my iTunes Playlists ?

2005-08-23 Thread hal9000

I get the no iTunes playlists problem as well quite frequently (once a
week). I usually end up reinstalling the SB2 6.1.1 server software from
scratch to fix it. When I reinstall the server software the use
iTunes option is in the Server Settings options page but then
subsequently disappears (I think when I rescan my library with clear
cache checked). Pretty frustrating because I need to clear my library
often due to maintenance I do to my MP3 tags (mostly consolidating
Artist names).

I have posted my issues a few times in this forum and things are
generally working ok right now but jsut this morning I had to reinstall
again.

I just checked the stream and it is a steady 140 kbps for the classical
channel (110). I think different channels have different rates.

Quoting MeSue [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

Thanks for the reply. It's good to know it's being worked on. By the
way, most of the duplicate album names that I left in the common titles
section are now listed multiple times for the same artist.

I did the logging of d_musicmagic and the problem only occurs when I
have certain filters selected for the mix filter. It works fine for
some filters and with other filters I get nothing. Here is what the log
 shows when it fails:

Have you tried creating these same mixes in MusicMagicMixer with the same
filters, style, variety, size and type settings? If MusicMagic can't create an
applicable mix, it will report couldn't get mix as well as when the seed is
not valid.

I was going to roll back to 6.1.2, but I now I don't want to give up

 fix the duplicate albums problem?

Check out the various 'duplicate entry' bugs in bugs.slimdevices.com and see if
any match up with what you see. if not, create a new report. Zip up your
slimserversql.db file, and perhaps also a copy of your slimserver.pref file.
Make sure these are from the very latest 6.2 build and after a rescan, with
clear library checked.

I just tried it and got a mix just fine in MMM.

I have a Squeezebox that was running on the last official 5.x build
and I noticed the other day that the Squeezebox would just go blank
after a bit, even though it's set to show the clock. Thinking the SW
was busted, I upgraded to the latest version, and that still remains.
Any ideas? The server hasn't really been adjusted.

press the brightness button on the remote. Does that have any effect?

[slim] Slimserver eating my memory.

2005-08-23 Thread stuorguk

I could no longer see the tracks in Browse Music on my SB. Just the
artists, and album names. Yet I could select an album, and it would
play all the tracks. So I attempted to do a rescan, and my Gentoo
Linux box became so unresponsive, I couldn't even shut it down. When I
restart slimserver, the memory usage goes through the roof (768MB Ram),
and all my swap space gets used up, then everything dies again.

I also see this looping in the console

Code:

utf8 \xB4 does not map to Unicode at
/usr/local/slimserver/Slim/Formats/Parse.pm line 153, GEN8 line 34.

This has been fixed in the 6.2 nightlies.

Can the squeezebox play a song (or playlist), but scroll

absolutely. play a song, then navigate to plugins-RSS News. scroll
through the items you've set at your own pace, line by line.
