[slim] Re: Wake up slimserver (Wake-on LAN) through wireless network

2005-11-10 Thread getprogs

Regardless of the posts from users who have never actually tried the
setup:

With previous firmware versions of SB2 I *did not* (where is the font
size 400 when you need it?) have any problems with my Slimserver
(running Windows XP SP2, English, on an old P3 PC with a PCI NIC using
WOL through the infamous wire from NIC to motherboard). The server
would wake whenever the SB2 was turned on, the whole setup would play
happily through the day/night/1 hour or whatever time I had to sit back
and relax&enjoy music, and when I powered off the SB2 the Slimserver PC
would go into hibernation after the (in the OS) specified amount of
time (in my case 5 min.s, changed it from 10 min.s for energy reasons
etc.).

Now, with the new firmware doing the WMA decoding the setup works
perfectly (or as before ;-) whenever I play my ripped CDs, but when I
switch to my netradio (which is a WMA stream) the server is no longer
used by the SB2, and since it does not receive any traffic from the SB2
determines that the SB2 is powered off and hence shuts down according to
the specified power setting.

The above should be fairly understandable, let me know where the film
snaps if not...

What I need is some sort of traffic from the SB2 to the server, for
instance every 2. minute, just to let it know that the SB2 is still
powered on - on NO, this has nothing to do with any M$ bugs etc.!
Setting the server DB hack as proposed by kdf will either:
1) not work or
2) not let the server sleep, which means I am back to burning energy
7*24, which is NOT what I would like to do!
Not to say the suggestion is foolish, but it is in no way related to
the (small) problem introduced by letting the SB2 do the WMA decoding,
which as far as I can see is easily resolved by letting the SB2 talk to
the server on a regurlar basis when the SB2 is powered on.

Best regards

For Windows Service from the Wiki.

While you are given the option to run Slimserver service automatically
when you install on Wiindows, you may want to install and run the
SlimServer Windows service by hand.

Follow these instructions:

Open a "cmd" window and type "cd C:\Program Files\SlimServer\server".
Type "slim.exe -install auto" to install the SlimServer software so it
will automatically start as a Windows Service the next time you reboot.

It's worth noting that if these questions are asked then something needs
changing.

I've never understood why the "Slim Devices" logo link goes straight to

Why not there have a small info page, followed by maybe a "Click here

You might want to change the font-size values in Handheld/slimserver.css.
Increase them from eg. 10 to 12.

Do you bother with tags? If not then there's no point doing anything.
If every time you convert the WAV's you are tagging stuff then you could
make life easier

I'd suggest invesing a little time looking at a solution (e.g.
Transcode) so you could set up a batch run to convert all of your
FLAC's with tags.

Dumping the wav's you'd still save space and be able to store 4
different lossy files as well as the FLAC for whenever you wanted to
transfer them.

e.g. 128kbps AAC
128kbps MP3
320kbps AAC
320kbps MP3

Once you're learned how to set it up it can do them whilst you're in
bed!

Digital Cordless (DECT) phones available in the UK use a dedicated
frequency of 1900MHz therefore don't interfere with 802.11b/g wireless
networking that uses 2.4GHz.

The 2.4GHZ band is unlicensed and therefore by definition any device
can use this frequency so I suppose you could get a phone using 2.4GHz
that has been imported from the US but I can't say I've ever seen them.

The DECT standard that's in use throughout Europe (including the UK)
uses frequencies that stay away from the 802.11 standard. It only tends

[slim] Re: Options for remote power on of non ir amp

2005-11-10 Thread cooperised

Hi,

I'm the friend of Max's who'll be building the PSU for his new amp. I
thought I'd post my thoughts so far, having read through the options.

Ideally, of course, the amp power should cycle with the squeezebox
power, instantly and transparently - just as if the squeezebox
contained a power amp of its own. Solutions involving another remote,
or even an unused button on the SB remote, just don't satisfy my sense
of neatness I'm afraid.  ;-)  The X10 route, though neat, is expensive;
it's also overkill for such a simple application IMHO.

In the absence of a geekport, I think I'll end up going down the IR
blaster route, with different codes for switch on and switch off - I
don't mind doing a bit of decoding, for example on a cheap PIC (the
6-pin 10F200 is 55 pence here in the UK).

Can anyone tell me more about the IR blaster? How easy is it to send
custom codes at custom baudrates? And how much of its functionality is
in firmware? For example, it would be useful to disable the 38KHz
carrier, since I'll probably just hardwire the IR blaster output into
the PSU. Is this possible?

For anyone who's interested, I'll be using an optoisolator and a triac
to switch the mains supply to the PSU (it's a cheap, small and silent
solution). The same trick would work for any mains-powered device, so
I'll try to make the schematics available once it's built.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Andy

Well, you could always air condition the gun safe, but that
might be noisey, so you'd have to watercool the A/C.
Pretty soon you've spent more for the safe than you did
for your CD collection. :-)

On a slightly more serious note, the CDs are the ultimate backup, which
can be a problem as many of mine are no longer in print. As a worst
case, I could just buy the 700 or so CDs,
but that would cost about $10,000. So a few hundred dollars for a

2005-11-10 Thread Jetlag

A very good friend of mine (fellow computer and HT geek) uses the most
foolproof system I know of. He uses 2 hot-swap HDDs and keeps one in
his safe deposit box.

Since his Studio is directly across the street from his bank, at least
once per week he simply copies all of is data to the HDD, walks across
the street and swaps it out for the other drive. This way he always
has all of his data on his PC and on at least one removeable drive.

Since he already pays for the box for storing his important papers,
etc, there was only the added cost of a hot swap bay and 2 drives. I
think he even writes off the cost of the safe deposit box on his taxes.
I forget which brand of backup software he uses, but it does
incremental and quickly adds new data or updates revised files. He
says it does not take very long.

I normally have a RAID3 server running in my house which is very safe.
His method is about as safe as it gets.

I've got the makings of something very similar at home.

Even though I have a meagre collection of music, I've invested so much
effort into getting it just right (specifically all the tags) that I've
got the makings of quite a decent backup system.

2 80GB drives in a mirrored RAID array. I currently run Windows backup
utility to copy everything on the RAID array to an 80GB drive in a
removable caddy. The backup runs every weekend. At the moment, though,
I keep everything in the same house. I perhaps should consider getting
a further 80GB HDD and keeping 1 disk at home and 1 disk at the office
:-)

The only downside right now is that the drives are not hot-swappable.
Consequently to change the drive I need to shutdown the PC. I've been a
bit slack and the drive has barely been removed from the caddy since
installation...

2005-11-10 Thread jth

Just be sure to check the specs of your 5.8 GHz phone before buying.
Some either transmit or receive on 2.4 GHz which makes them rather
pointless for avoiding 802.11b/g interference.

[slim] rescan time

2005-11-10 Thread Steven Moore

I know this is the $64,000 question but how long should a rescan take?
I am using ss 6.2 on an imac 800 mhz with around 13,000 tracks on a fw
hd and using itunes.
I just added a new album and did a rescan looking for new music. The
rescan is taking hours.
with d_info set I am seeing this sort of output to the console:

2005-11-10 16:08:32.6720 _checkValidity: Checking to see if
file:///Volumes/media/itunes/Archies/Lince%20Dance%20cd/Sugar%20Sugar.mp3
has changed.
2005-11-10 16:08:32.6744 _hasChanged: Checking for
[/Volumes/media/itunes/Archies/Lince Dance cd/Sugar Sugar.mp3] - size &
timestamp.

I have the lazy search plug-in and superdatetime plugin as well.
Could it be the lazy search plugin or would it be anything else?

Yes, if you read my post. I did a test where I send a stream of Ping's

It still went back to sleep.
And I was also playing mp'3 at the time.

So are you sure that your PC ever stayed awake after a WOL event?

RE: [slim] rescan time

2005-11-10 Thread Stuart Hickinbottom
The lazy search does not get involved at any point *during* the scan (and
it's not showing the messages you see there - all its messages are prefixed
with LazySearch2), but it does process the database contents when the full
scan has finished.

If you're seeing the "scan in progress" in the web UI then it's definitely
just the normal core SlimServer scan that's taking the time as the lazy
database work only starts when that message disappears.

Thanks that narrows it down a bit. I tried the latest night-lies with
the same result, long rescan times, in fact I had to stop the server
(after 2.5 hrs) as it was going on so long.
The strange thing was when I reinstalled ss 6.2 and did a wipe scan it
took about 40 mins and actually finished.
But again the rescan for new music never seems to end. iTunes perhaps?
I'll try clearing everything slim out, prefs etc and if it's still the
same and anyone else can confirm this I can submit a bug report.

[slim] Re: Moose 0.11

2005-11-10 Thread mattybain

Looking sweet, couple of things maybe you want to think about (these are
really minor)

- Long titles such as "I need some fine wine and you, you need to be
nicer" (which is playing fine now) looks very odd as it goes under the
buttons which being semi opaque looks strange. Maybe you could limit
the text to a certain area to prevent this.
- Would it be possible to lose the "The"s i.e. from "The Cardigans"
- Unpausing has a slight hiccup
- Buttons get messy when you make the window smaller.

I was having problems viewing albums (it showed C:\IPOD on the left and
the artists on the right, and no albums!!) but worked out that this was
due to the fact I uploaded my IPOD music to my laptop
and it does this into a flat directory structure i.e. c:\Ipod\The
Cardigans\All files from all albums and not the usual C:\Ipod\The
Cardigans\Long gone before daylight\all songs from that album etc

I am guessing what I am seeing is just a function of how you are
reading the files and that you need to have at least two folders i.e.
Artist and Album for it to work properly.

Well, there's a chap in their Swindon branch who's really excellent &
not full of the usual bs that you tend to get in places like that. He

Radioshack sells some that are 5.8 only, too.

2005-11-10 Thread klausbgva

My approach to the very same problem.

After many test and trials. I am working on a really serious solution
fix that problem.

Today I mirror the Data between 2 servers within the same rack.

I occassionally copy everything to 1 USB external dirve. But I will
reache soon the size where disks are getting too small.

The next solution will be a SATA Raid 5 controller with up to 8
drives.

My brother is getting the same configuration we will each buy 2x the
size of what we need. copy all our critical data to the raid.

Put the 2 server in the same network create an original rsync of the
folders.
After that it will be synched with rsynch every day

The homes are about 1/2 mile about if they ever fail at the same time I
think there will be bigger problems than to get a few music files back.

Do you mean "router" or do you simply mean "switch"?

If you just want to connect your SB to your server then a switch will do

better to buy directly from Slimdevices. I have bought my first SB1

Right for warranty, but I hope that with no mechanic part in movement

[slim] Re: Wake up slimserver (Wake-on LAN) through wireless network

2005-11-10 Thread MrC

I think we're miscommunicating. Early, you indicated:
oreillymj Wrote:
>
> Now, since the WMA decoding is done in the SB2, no traffic is generated
> from the SB2 to the server
I don't believe this is true. Run a packet sniffer and you'll see that
there is plenty of network traffic on the 3483 control port. Traffic is
constant.

You also mentioned that pings do not keep your system alive after a
WOL. This agrees with my point earlier. Pings should not keep the
system awake after WoL, because if they did, once a WoL was sent, other
system's that might be pinging the target system could keep the system
alive indefinitely! In Windows networks, there is constant network
activity, such as browser activity (think windows network, not IE),
domain server management, WINS activity, etc. Routers, managed
switches, etc. can send a lot of directed traffic as well. Windows has
to ignore the contstant noise on the network when setting its
go-back-to-sleep timer, and only keep the system alive when there
meaningful activity. Your ping tests are inconsequential. I was
trying to communicate some of the things that Windows considers
meaningful activity.

What changed in the firmware was not simply an elimination of server
<-> SB# network activity. There are other variables here.

Personally, I don't not believe that sending an WoL every minute is the
right thing to do.

OK! I'm looking for a wired router with a built in switch. Right now

also planning to get some kind of NAS device in the future. I've just

You don't need a router for that configuration - a switch will do the job.

[slim] Re: Repost?

2005-11-10 Thread JJZolx

I assume you have an Internet connection at home. If so, I would
definitely get a router, as you'll probably want the Squeezebox to be
able to access the Internet for 'net radio, either with or without
using SqueezeNetwork. For that you'll need a device on your network to
do NAT - network addresss translation - which is a simple means of
having multiple devices share an Internet connection with a single IP
address.

SOHO Internet routers are pretty ubiquitous these days, especially the
wired-only ones. Some will have more capability than others - better
firewalling perhaps, or maybe a nicer user interface. Some offer a
means of connecting a printer ("print server").

But I've always liked the D-Link gear and have had excellent results
in about a dozen installations, from homes with two PCs to small
offices with up to 10 machines. Something like the DI-604 (same one
fathom39 recommended in the other thread) on the following page would
be all you need:

http://www.dlink.com/products/category.asp?cid=2&sec=0

This is a device you can easily buy used off of eBay:

[slim] Re: Options for remote power on of non ir amp

> in firmware? For example, it would be useful to disable the 38KHz
> carrier, since I'll probably just hardwire the IR blaster output into

>

IR Blaster works like this: For each bit in an IR command the plugin
sends a high/low time value (in microseconds/modulation) which tell the
firmware to send for hightime and wait for lowtime. The firmware also
applies the carrier during the hightime.

But there is a mode for remotes that do not use a carrier. The format
is called ITT and consists of 20uS hightime and multiple of 20uS
lowtime.

To tell the firmware to send such an ITT impuls the hightime needs to
be set to 1 and the lowtime can be set as needed. The result is a 20uS
hightime (fixed) and the specified amount of lowtime.

So it would be possible to send two different patterns for 'power on'
and 'power off'.

Power On: hightime(20uS), lowtime(10*20uS), hightime(20uS),
lowtime(10*20uS)
Power Off: hightime(20uS), lowtime(20*20uS), hightime(20uS),
lowtime(20*20uS)

Code:

  begin remote
  name ampswitch
  bits 2
  flagsITT

  one 1 10
  zero 1 20

  begin codes
  power_on 0x03
  power_off 0x00
  end codes

  end remote

I've had a look at the D-Link DI-604 before, but I don't know what to
make of it. It's quite popular in Sweden, but I can't get a clear
picture of how good it is. Some people love and some hate it. At
Pricerunner http://tinyurl.com/dnfpt
http://www.pricerunner.com/?ncr=1

the consumer reviews are very mixed.

What I was really interested in was to know if any router suited the
Squeezebox better then the others or if that didn't matter at all.

Dean,

Thank you for adding this to the order page.

I just tried to order two and the only options I see for delivery are
as follows:
$51.00 One or two business day delivery to major business centers
around the world
$47.95 Two to five business day delivery to more than 57 countries

I wasn't really expecting to pay close to 4x the value of the item in
shipping charge - is there any way these small items can be sent via
normal airmail? If they get lost in transit, I'll buy 2 more - still a
lot cheaper than paying $47 shipping!

Thanks,

I'd be very surprised if it made any difference at all. Certainly
there won't be any that clearly work "better" with the Squeezebox,
though you might find someone who's had the odd issue with some router
or other.

http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=113

If you pick up something used, the only thing I'd advise is that you
don't get an older 10Mbps router. It won't make any difference for
audio streaming, but for PCs or PC-to-NAS traffic you'd want the faster
100Mbps speed of a 10/100 switch.

2005-11-10 Thread superbad

Just tried it out. Interesting. I created a station based on Low that
gave me a few interesting and fairly appropriate results, but then it
threw in a Poison song. Pandora needs to keep that box shut.

Reading their explanation of how it works, it sounds like they manually
analyze each song they stream? It would seem like there is just too much
music in the world for that to be feasible in the long run. Plus you are
subject to someone making inappropriate judgements about a song
(especially if they are hurrying), and then you end up hearing
something by Poison.

On the other hand, I have found some great new bands using LastFM. It's
a good bet that someone who listens to a bunch of the same stuff you do
is also going to listen to some stuff you like but haven't heard of
yet. That seems like a much more scalable and "open source" kind of
approach.

[slim] Network adapter reconnects every 23 minutes

2005-11-10 Thread Risko

Hi,
I just unpacked the new SB3 today, installed the latest SlimServer 6.2
and had not one problem setting it all up.
Everything seems to be in a proper working order, except for one
"glitch".
My PC running WinXPpro disconnects and reconnects to the network every
23 minutes and 50-56 seconds.
Event viewer records the following event in the System section: "The
system detected that network adapter
\DEVICE\TCPIP_[463A260E-FECD-4FEA-8B59-19584885246C} was connected to
the network, and has initiated normal operation over the network"

I tried to stop the Slimserver, still happened.
New to Squeezebox, ex-audiotron user, please help

I've ordered mine direct from SlimDevices about 2 weeks ago - I just
received the e-mail that it's winging its way from San Jose overnight
:)

Thought I'd add it for convenience.
