[slim] Unicode troubles

2005-12-04 Thread aix

I am having issues with Unicode and SlimServer 6.2.1 running on Windows
XP. My music library makes extensive use of non-ANSI characters
(predominantly Cyrillic). However, almost all Cyrillic text (artists,
albums and song titles) is displayed -- and sorted -- incorrectly in
the Web GUI.

The library is a mix of WAV and MP3 files. WAVs have no tags; MP3s have
a mix of IDv1 and IDv2 tags.

One interesting case is an album that is mostly OK, but parts of which
are displayed in a wrong character encoding. When examining the files
on disk, there is no obvious reasons for why this would happen. All
files are named consistently and all MP3 tags are identical in terms of
format and encoding.

I would appreciate any ideas for how best to troubleshoot this.

Dem, you're good. 3Ware is *the* way to go for a RAID setup on an
existing PC. The support in linux is there. No freakin' softRAID. I use
softRAID on my present file server but it's only RAID1. If I was going
to upgrade it I'd go 3Ware and RAID5.

As for the Infrant boxes, why run SlimServer on them? Why not throw
together a really cheap linux box with a GBit NIC, NFS mount the NAS,
then share it!! That'd be smokin'. That's my thoughts and intentions.

[slim] stange bug: changing volume & add songs to playlist

2005-12-04 Thread notanatheist

Okay, made the title descriptive to help anyone searching. I went
through the first 10 pages of posts and searched a few strings and
haven't found the answer yet.

So, what's my problem? My SB2 behaves a little erratic. When changing
the volume or adding songs to the library the screen instantly changes
back. I don't think it did that last night. The SB3 definitely doesn't
do that. When I change the volume the SB3 stays on that screen for at
least a second giving me the chance to see where the volume is and
adjust it further.

I checked my server settings too. I can't seem to find what's missing
or if it was something I caused. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

I wanted to thank you again Patrick for stopping in Oregon. I drove up

I have both the SB2 & 3 setup and they're great! Got a little bug on

Roku M1001!! They're fast and hella responsive. Any changes you make in
the browser to the playlist is instant! The Roku SB lags hardcore when
making changes. I'm so glad I'm not the one that paid for the Roku. The
only nice thing about the Roku is it's a little metal tube you can use
to whack people with.

First off, can you play this through

Secondly, to get this to play in SlimServer for me

Is your Squeezebox resolving the URL to "CBC

I understand what you propose now. It could give me the sequence of
browse steps I want. However, there is a problem with using the album
name as the name of the work.

Most often, I'd like to browse first on Composer, then the genre
(symphony) if there are a lot of works, then on the name of the work,
then on performer (artist). At the stage where I want to search for
the work, a list of album names for one composer would be too long. For
Beethoven, it would still be 100 album names for just Beethoven
Symphonies. In my scheme using just the name of the work as the album
name and displaying only distinct values, I would have a list of 9
works to select from.

Your scheme:
Select Browse composer => list of 40-60 names
I use 1st letter to jump, select "Beethoven" from effectively 2-10
names.

Select Genre for next browse ==> list of 6 names
(symphony, concerto, quartet, piano sonata, chamber, other)
I select symphony from the list.

Select Album for next browse ==> list of 100+ albums
(of the form "Beethoven - Symphony 3 - Szell - 1958")
I can't type one letter an jump because they all start with Beethoven.
I wade through the whole list and pick the extact work and performer I
want.

I'm done but the last step was a killer! I'd probably give up before
finishing. If my wife was selecting music, she would give up and come
kick me for my bad choice of the system.

My scheme:

Select Browse composer => list of 40-60 names
I use 1st letter to jump, select "Beethoven" from effectively 2-10
names.

Select Genre for next browse ==> list of 6 names
(symphony, concerto, quartet, piano sonata, chamber, other)
I select symphony from the list.

Select Work for next browse ==> list of 9 work names
(of the form "Symphony 3")
I can get through a list of 9 names.

Select Performer for next browse ==> list of 8-12 names
(of the form "Karajan")
I can get through a list of 12 names.

I'm done and it was all feasible for me. My scheme depended on having
a NON UNIQUE work name and presenting only distinct values to keep the
list short.

Some ideas come to mind:

- Why not browse for conductor before work?
When you get a sizeable library, you don't remember everything in it.
The point of a browse interface is to let the computer present choices
rather than making you guess.

- If SS depends heavily on the album name internally, why not put the
short Work name in a different tag? That would let you browse on a
long unique album name, keep SS happy and I could browse on a different
tag with a short, non-unique work name.
This work tag is analogous to the album nme as you proposed but it
could probably be wedged into the contributor table with a different
role. UGLY but it is a thought.

typing (mobile phone fashion) in on the keypad. The new Lazy Search
plugin makes this easier, by allowing you to type in just one keypad
number for each letter.

As I understand it, you can make a single search step using the SB
remote and display, then you get a list of album names to scroll
through. It doesn't scale well.

I'd just add composer and conductor (performer) to the list of tags you
can browse and let it go at that.

For the web interface, the advanced search function could be extended
with fixed fields for composer and conductor (performer). The genre
portion should have a a textbox allowing the user to specify a value
for an other genre in the dropdown list.

Well, Lazy Search beats the current method. Maybe it should be
incorporated in SS so that it works cleanly for any tag.

[slim] Linksys WUSB54GS - Nividia Nforce system - crash

2005-12-04 Thread bstark73

Hi,

I just rearranged my wireless network at home to improve the wireless
coverage within the house. Specifically, i moved the AP to the center
of the house and put my main PC (which was wired via ethernet to the
AP) on a wireless link. I did this with a linksys wireles usb adapter.

This definitely improved the wireless signal within the house. The
clients within the main areas of the house (laptop, mp3 streaming
device - slimdevices squeezebox) have much better signal strength and
work better than before. Even the PC that is now connected wirelessly
to the AP has good enough signal strength and has good data transfer
rates.

Problem is that my PC now hangs with alarming regularity!. My system:
- AMX X2 3800
- Nvidia Nforce 4 ultra system - epox ultra 9npa+
- ATI 6800 XL graphics card
- 1 Gig RAM
- 2, 250GB sata drives

Has anyone had problems with USB wireless adapters and in particular,
the linksys device? I am running it at 54G, but not turbo mode. I
assume this is some form of either a bad driver for the wireless
adapter (i am using the latest) or bad USB 2 drivers (i think i am
again using the latest). Has anyone been able to fix this? Or should i
simply buy a PCI based adapter?

thanks!

Its a work in progress. I don't think it is time to be discouraged.
But setting up a proper library for non-pop is a non-trivial effort.

It isn't going to be fixed with a new table and five new Sql statements.

And there are philosophical questions to answer: what is a band?

[slim] Re: Using Composer / Conductor / Band tags effectively

2005-12-04 Thread Listener

I read Ceejay's last post and Pat's. I tried to find some information
of the DB design as it exists.

I looked around in the SS v6.2.1 source and found a dbcreate.sql file
for SQLLite and one for MySQL. Based on what I see in those files and
your comments, I made some observations:

1. The album table plays a fairly central role. The album tag value is
probably taken from this table with hardwired logic. That makes it
harder to treat it as just another tag to make a datadriven UI.

2. I see a role field in the contributor_track and contributor_album
tables. Are these fields derived from the tab name? If not, maybe the
original information about tab name and value has been lost. And it
probably isn't easy to separate composer from artist so that you can
browse one and not the other. If you can translate the role back into
the original meaning (composer, conductor, artist), perhaps you could
search on just one of the roles. And in a later step, search on another
role. If not, then step-by-step browsing isn't going to work for me.

3. It looks as though the tag database is not very general and it is
intertwined with the general functionality of Slimserver. That makes
it any changes harder to implement and less likely to happen.

4. I see that there are genres and genre_track tables. So that is
hardwired too. I'd guess that if a tag doesn't have a table defined
for it, that tag isn't kept in the database.

5. If I were making decisions, I'd consider separating out the tag info
into a new track_tag table with the following fields:

a primary key of course,
a reference to the corresponding track,
a tag name and
a value for that tag.

Then you could make the browse and search logic data driven and quite
general. I'm certainly not making the decision and I'm not likely to be
doing the work so it probably won't happen.

6. Stuffing various tag values into the contributor table makes browse
lists bigger and means that the UI won't scale well for me.
---
I could have been looking at the wrong file to see the database design
or not understanding it correctly. So my observations might be
completely wrong.

---
Now I understand Ceejay's concern for making the album tag unique.
However, depending on an album name that is set outside SS by software
you don't specify and don't control is a risk. Suppose two sets of
tracks have the same album name. As I found, SS/SB will return both
sets when I browse by artist and then select an album. They individual
tracks will play in some mixed up order. If one set of tracks has a
severe replay gain settng, what happens you you play the other set?

Perhaps the Beginner's Guide for Classical Music and other SS/SB
documentation should contain a strong warning that if the album name
isn't unique, BAD THINGS MAY HAPPEN.

---
Altogether, not encourging.

Bill

I've read it. I think you can covered good points and plugged a big
hole in the SS/SB documentation.

A comment about choices for album name and title. I think the choices
depend on how much classical music you have. I am not sure that your
recommendations will scale well to a library or 1000+ classical CDs. I
might have a positive recommendation in a couple of days.

Browse Music Folder is a definite option for finding music in a large
collection. I build a hierarchy of directories with MP3 files from
various sources. I'm just getting starting trying it out with SS/SB.
This hierarchy is MyMusic/Composer/(type of music)/work/(performers).
The bottom level directory usually contains one music file per
movement.

I only use the (type of music) level if I need to split the works in
smaller sets. The performers directory name has a concatenation of
whatever tags is appropriate for the work - conductor_orchestra or
soloist_conductor_orchestra or quartet name.

I think that Browse Music Folder has promise and folder organization
might be discussed at more length and in terms of the reason for it: to
split browse lists into more manageable lengths.

> I suspect I still haven't gone as far as you want,

I think that a good user's guide is needed. I agree that it is
reasonable for you to avoid it.

I think I said earlier that the choices made in ripping, tagging,
storing and naming files were linked to the UI mechanisms available in
SS/SB. I think a bit more explanation of why your recommendations are
important would be good. Right now, these isn't much documentation
about what happens at each step of browsing. Telling beginners why
they are tagging things as you recommend and how they will select music
using those tags would help a beginner alot.

You stress consistency. I found that however much I tried to be
consistent, I would make some mistakes. Some words on cleaning up your
tags would be useful. I've found that tracking down mistakes isn't
trivial.

I think that recommending a tag editor program that is viual and
capable and saying that there ar elots of other choices would be
helpful.

Thanks for making the effort. It is worthwhile in itself and I
appreciate your taking the further step to talk about modifications to
the SS/SB to better handle classical music.

An admirable goal. Adding queries is fairly safe.

Right, both predefined as part of the standard release,
and then whatever folks need for the way their library is

It should not do this. Using the name is bad design.

Each tune/song should be identified not by its tags, but by
the music itself. Tags are just comments for us humans.

[slim] Re: Using Composer / Conductor / Band tags effectively

2005-12-04 Thread ceejay

Hmmm, this could get tricky!

First, the database as it is... has many tables! But it has the
notion of a "contributor", with several possible "roles". So a track
can have many different contributors associated, and each contributor
can be any one of several different roles (artist, conductor, composer,
band - as far as I can see). This is wired into the current database
design. Adding an extra role doesn't look hard, if needed.

This means that code along the lines I was thinking of, allowing the
user to do queries on different roles, can be done without any changes
to the database (I think). I was trying to keep it relatively simple
(if we don't, it won't happen).

I suspect your completely general approach to using any tag in any way
you like just might be a step too far.

I was thinking more of a browse than a search model - and I was, BTW,
allowing for a multi-level selection, at least in the more advanced of
the options I described. You select, say, "conductor", and get a list
of all the conductors... choose Karajan, get a list of all albums that
match (this is the potentially long list you are worried about) BUT
with an added set of selectors at the top for each of the other valid
browse tags. So if you want to now specify a further value for
ENSEMBLE, you can. Properly coded, this would give you the flexibility
you want to specify selectors for any of the valid tags, in any order.

I don't think this is very different from what you described, except
that I am visualising a limited set of tags for which this will work
(trying to keep the changes simple).

Enough of that. Maybe I'll just have a go at writing it myself.

The other function, though, is "Search", which is quite different (I
think). The current standard Search functionality allows you to search
(in albums, artists and songs) by typing (mobile phone fashion) in on
the keypad. The new Lazy Search plugin makes this easier, by allowing
you to type in just one keypad number for each letter.

Clearly the standard Search could be extended to look for Conductor
etc, but I think the Lazy Search plugin would require more work and
possibly changes to the database, from what I recall of how it works.

Ideally I suppose you'd like to enter partial searches on each of
several different tags. I have a feeling that might be too difficult to
use using the remote UI, though of course easy to do with a web
interface. Maybe the right answer is to tell everyone that wants to do
this to go out and buy a wireless PDA to use as their remote!!

BTW, keeping the Album title really short ("Symphony 1") won't work -
it MUST contain enough information to make it unique vs all other
albums, otherwise Slimserver (and other music players) will merge the
tracks of the ambiguous albums.

Lets give it some more thought and see if anyone else will join in our
mad ramblings

Ceejay.

The right column shows a not fully worked out idea for providing a list

for the genre tag and possibly useful for other tags.

I realize that if you change the tag specified on a line, you have to

Unfortunately, there's currently no way to play a track unless it's
first added to your library. I think we can expect that capability in
SlimServer 6.5, but it will be a while before that version is
released.

If you were to tag all of the audio books with the same 'ARTIST' name
(say, 'Audio Book'), then at least they would be consolidated under the
same artist and wouldn't clog up that view.

You can't really consolidate them under Browse Albums, though. They'll
still show up as individual albums in that view. What I would do is
force them all to the end of the album view by adding an ALBUMSORT tag
(TSOA ID3 tag in mp3 files) to the tracks. Setting the tag's value to
"" plus the album name should force them to the end, but keep them
in alphabetical order.

This dummy web page shows a setup pag for creating a custom browse.

When the user chooses this custom browse from the main SB menu, a list

at a time of course.)

The user selects a value with the right arrow and SS builds a list of
DISTINCT values for the tag specified for the 2nd step for files that
have the specified value for the 1st step.

This lets the user specify a hierarchy of browses to narrow down the
list of files until he gets to what he wants.

This is useful for classical music libraries where you might browse on
Composer then Album (work), then Artist or Conductor.

With the second router and second NIC you're solution is like treating
the symptom rather than the underlying cause. If your Squeezebox
loses connections, you'll need to solve that problem.

Your router actually sets up a second network that is, to a certain
extent, independent of the first. You'll need to configure your
(second) router so that it can see and be seen by the main wireless
network.

But again, this is like putting a bandaid on a wound without first
stopping the bleeding.

If I were you, I'd get rid of the second router and try to diagnose
the wireless problem. If it's a distance/signal strength issue, you
might want to replace the second router with an access point, or try
to use the second router as an AP rather than a router. That way,
you'll still have a single network.

Another approach might be to replace your (single) router with one of
the newer pre-N MIMO routers. I'm under the impression that they can
handle multiple wireless data streams and that they interoperate with
B and G clients.

This should already be fixed, in that the sort will use the multi-album
sort key. You'd have to check the db to confirm.
There are a number of settings changes since 5.3.1 to handle
compilations and multi-albums. You might need to play with those a
bit. As a rule now, you should only have to tag then with a plain
tracknum, and disc (part in set for itunes). The server does the rest.
I'm not sure exactly what it does with tracknums of 1-1, 102, etc. I
no longer have the kind of free time needed to keep track of all the
changing back and forth.

5.3.1 is almost completely unrelated to 6.2.2

> or anyone else to code it up.

I agree that we should think a bit more before asking anyone to write
code.

I have made three dummy web pages to illustrate what I've done so far.
(A setup page for selecting which tags to add to the Browse by tags
menu, a setup page for creating a custom browse and a web interface
advanced search page.) I haven't uploaded anything before so I'll try
to upload them in separate steps.

Some things to think out: 1) how would these changes work in a mixed
library of classical and other things. 2)Are there any benefits for
genres other than classical? 3) Are there things specific to opera or
choral works? 4) How about hymns and religious music? 4) Anything
different about jazz, blues, hip-hop or rap?

There is a prospect that these changes could make Slimserver capable of
using whatever tags are present in the music files. I don't know the
table layout of the database but if it uses two tables, it should be
doable:

music file table (MT): MT primary key, file name, other stuff

tag table (TT): TT primary key, foreign key reference to MT primary
key, tag name, tag value

This sort of structure provides several benefits: a) SS can store all
the tags found in music files in the database. No need to cast choices
in stone (code). b) The choice of which tags to list in the menus can
be done in a setup page. c) SS does a Select query on the database to
get a list of Distinct tag names in the database, keeps those the user
has chosen in the setup screen and display the resulting list in the
menu and in the drop-down lists to build a custom browse. d) Multiple
Artist values can be accommodated easily.

Some tags may not have a well defined text name and we don't want to
display a cryptic mix of letters and numbers. The setup page that
lets the user select which tags to put into the menu should contain a
column for specifying a display name to be shown in place of the
cryptic text. We can build a set of defaults once.

i.e.
checkbox tag name from filedisplay name
...

If the tag info is currently in the same table as the file name in
fixed fields, a two table design would require a more complex Select
query (and take more time.) However, it is clean and would make SS/SB
more flexible than most players.

> As I see it, the request for additional functionality in web
> search is fairly straightforward - simply add some more fields
> in the "advanced search" page so we can enter as many or as
> few search restrictions as we like.

Some thoughts about search: 1) Browsing in a list is often better than
typing criteria for a search. If you can type a single character and
jump into the list, it extends the size of a list that you can browse
effectively. 2) Search needs to provide a way to find things that you
can't find easily by browsing. 3) If we are making the Browse
capabilities more flexible, we should try to do the same for search.

I have a dummy advanced search screen for the web interface. I made
the search field names drop-down boxes rather than text labels. And I
added a couple of fields.

I also experimented with the idea of adding a column with a drop-down
box containing all the values for that tag chosen on that line. I
understand that if you change the tag name in that drop-down box, you
have to re-populate the drop-down box with available values. It will
be clearer when you see the dummy page.

Populating a drop-down box from the database rather than from a
pre-determined list is especially important for genre. Specifying
other for genre doesn't help much.

I think that the key ideas for advanced search are 1) let the user to
specify any tag to search on from the SB menu, 2) selectively display
available values to making searching easier.

I think we have an opportunity to make SS/SB flexible and able to use
the tags in finds in the users music files. We don't have to wire in
our choices.

One additional capability might be good: Combining tags when they are
equivalent. A user may have music files from different sources
containing different tags. So his music library would be inconsistent.
It would be better if SS can adapt to what it finds rather than
requiring the user to have been completely consistent.

SS has a setup option to lump Composer, Conductor and Band with Artist.
A more general setup page might let the user specify one or more tags
to lump with another tag. The user whould pick a tag he wants to
browse and one or more tags to be combined. You don't have to lose the

No. Why do you want to do that?

If you were to access it using Browse Music Folder, that would cause
SlimServer to scan it anyway.

I have some audiobook cd's which have 250 mp3 files per book! I would
not want this clogging up my artist/album views. Also random mixes would
have a high chance of inclusing one of the chapters!

The images are the same ones as before, so the resolution should be
just as it was before. The only difference is in the play icon which
was improperly scaled up from 8 to 9 pixels in some older versions.
The spacing has changed due to the increasing information that has been
added to the title formatting over time. i have also moved this from
cell size control to css-based control, which may be more accurate and
thus showing the size as smaller than it used to be.

Re: [slim] Disabled volume and headphone.

2005-12-04 Thread Mark Lanctot
Sorry there haven't been any responses up to now.

Yes, you can adjust the headphone volume
independently of the digital volume control. I
have the digital volume control set to fixed and
I'm still able to control the headphone volume,
which remembers its last setting too.

This is exactly as it should be.

[slim] Re: Updated skin for Handheld/PDA use

2005-12-04 Thread rme

nice skin, thanks!

I am having one issue with this and the default handheld skin.

I access using a Palm OS treo650 through their blazer web viewer.

I have a problem with the volume controls on your skin in that when I
select a new volume (say changing from 6 to 7) for the first time, it
will transmit and process the change properly. The web browser says
"sending" and then "receiving"

However, when I select a previously selected volume level (say changing
back to 6 or from 8 to 7 when previously selected above), the web
browser does not transmit the change. It only says "redrawing".

It seems that in the palm browser it does not force a refresh ande
resend of the volume level if it is had prevously been selected.

Is there a way to program your skin to more specifically force a
refresh everytime something gets selected or touched on a screen, even
if it was previously selected?

One other item, how can I get your skin to default to the home page
instead of the browse artists page when I start it up?

Thanks again.

No, it gets worse. At random moments in the performance, the guy gets
his dogs to "sing" by playing twiddles on the mouth organ and shouting

[slim] Fishbone skin question

2005-12-04 Thread DrNic

Hi
I guess this is really aimed at the author (KDF)!!
I love this skin and have used it exclusively in my SB1 setup (believe
it or not the 5.3.1 server!).
I have the SB3 on order, and have downloaded the latest 6.2.2
(4/12/05)- a breeze to install (ie none of the stated problems others
have been unfortunate to experience) and the new functionality is
great. I haven't yet put it "live" so the SB1 is still using the server
off another machine running the old 5.3.1.
The latest fishbone skin seems to have the icons (add, play now, play
next etc) closer together than on the old server skin, and they appear
to be lower resolution. This is on the latest version of Mozilla
Firefox. I can obviously compare these direct as I can navigate to the
running 5.3.1 and the new "local" 6.2.2. Interestingly the Internet
explorer version looks better but they are still closer together.
Is there a reason or solution to this? How can I take screen shots to
show you? (short of using a digital cam!).
Thanks for any advice.

Nic

PS the memory footprint of 6.2.2 is significantly larger (64Mb for 340
songs) compared to 5.3.1 (48Mb for 1800 songs).
Is there a reason?

Re: [slim] Two rooms

2005-12-04 Thread Mark Lanctot
You could use both the coaxial digital and optical
digital outputs simultaneously with 2 receivers.
I am assuming that both outputs can operate
simultaneously, but I see nothing that indicates
they can't.

Yes, the SB2's DAC is at least as good or better
than those in most AVRs, but the problem isn't
that one DAC is better than the other, the problem
is that some receivers handle analog much worse
than digital.

With my Marantz 8400, I find the optical digital
SB2 output to be extremely clean but slightly
bright. The analog connection is much warmer, but
too much so - to the point the vocals sound
muffled and the music lacks detail.

Yet when I listen to the SB2 using headphones it
isn't nearly as muffled, and it's being driven by
the SB2 DAC as well.

Since both the analog and digital SB2 outputs can
operate simultaneously, you can have a very good
comparison test since you can change audio inputs
with the press of a button. Remember that
auditory memory is the shortest, most fleeting and
most easily fooled/persuaded.

You can also use a pair of splitters on the analog
line to split the analog sound between two
receivers. Cheaper than a Niles switch, although
you would need a second receiver.

[slim] 2 nics with two wi-fi need help

2005-12-04 Thread georgeweliver

I have 2 problems??? In an effort to resolve my hard disk from filling
up I split my audio files onto 2 new (to the system) hard disks drives.
And I install Itunes on one of these two drives because when windows xp
prof. adds audio files my C: drive was filling up way too quickly. The
other problem I was having was the Squeezebox (orginal with Wi-Fi)
would loose response and / or reboot and start playing again from the
beginning of the audio file.

My resolution:So I bought a second wi-fi router just for my squeezebox.
But here is the problems

1. The slim server is installed on my d: drive to save C: but it can't
find itunes libraries.

2. And because I connect through a nic to the wi-fi router to the
squeeze box and have a second nic(wireless) to connect to the internet
through a second wireless router when I try to browse the internet the
system appears to go to the squeesbox nic and cannot find the DNS and
web pages and I can't browse. I have disable the squeeze box nic to
wireless router connection and no problem with the browser of course
the squeeezebox looses connections and I can't listen to music any
seggestions would be appreciated.

I have just found on the forum that there is a way to decide flac with
the replaygain applied to a squeezebox1. (by adding a replaygain flag to

Can I do a similar thing with MP3 files? I know this will increase
bandwidth useage greatly as it will have to send over wav files - but I
am not overly bothered by that.

[slim] Two rooms

2005-12-04 Thread mrfantasy

I've decided I have to get my Squeezebox music in both my living room
and family room.

Right now my SB2 is in a great custom entertainment center
(http://www.customshoppefurniture.com/) with the home theatre receiver
(a Sony STR-DE845--it's not audiophile equipment but among the ones I
tested 4 years ago for under $500 sounded the best with music, and it
sounds great with DVDs) and Klipsch Quartet speakers with a KSW10
subwoofer (again, not audiophile stuff, but better than any other home
theatre speakers under $800 I tried for music). The receiver has A/B
speaker outputs, but not a line out that could be fed to another amp.

My family room and living room are back-to-back (the family room is an
extension off the original house, and in fact has the back of the
living room fireplace in it) and I can get between them with a simple
wall penetration, and run about 15 feet of cable between the rooms. I
the Living room I have an old Sony reciever, stereo only, and Polk R15
speakers (and also a second TV and DVD player for incidental use, but
no home theatre setup.)

I figure my options are:

1) Buy an SB3 and put it in the living room, hooked up to the existing
receiver. Probably the simplest option, but I'm not sure how the audio
quality would be with the old receive, and it's another $300. Also my
primary application would be to have the same thing playing in the
living room and family room (I'll probably probably never have
independent listening) and even if players weren't precisely synched it
would be distracting.

2) Use the B speaker outputs from the family room and run speaker wire
to the living room, and get a speaker switch in the living room (Niles
Audio makes an automatic switch for about $90.) to switch between the
family room receiver and living room receiver. Cost $100 plus some
speaker wire.

3) Hook my digital out from the SB2 to the family room receiver, and
run the line outs to the living room, into the old receiver. This
would be easy as well, but probably wouldn't sound as good in the
family room, where I'm now using the analog outs assuming the SB2 DAC
is better than whatever's in the Sony (although the Sony is resampling
and processing it anyway, and doesn't have an analog only mode like
I've seen in some home theatre receivers in the same price range
nowadays.)

4) Buy a new receiver for the family room with a line out, put the one
currently in there in the living room, and use line out cable to hook
the two together. The new receiver would probably have an analog-only
mode for best audio quality from the SB2, and would provide the same
signal to my current receiver. I'd be looking at stuff in the
$500-$1000 range.

Thoughts? Anything else I haven't thought of?

[slim] Re: Using Composer / Conductor / Band tags effectively

2005-12-04 Thread ceejay

OK, so this is in principle do-able - I think it would be a good idea to
try to converge on what we want before asking Dan or anyone else to code
it up.

As I see it, the request for additional functionality in web search is
fairly straightforward - simply add some more fields in the "advanced
search" page so we can enter as many or as few search restrictions as
we like.

I think there are two main topics for debate (if anyone sees others now
would be the time to jump in!).

(1) What tags do we want to search on (in addition to
Artist/Album/Track which are givens)?
I've been searching for standards and not come up with very much:
http://www.xiph.org/vorbis/doc/v-comment.html and
http://reactor-core.org/ogg-tagging.html both discuss vorbis comments
which is fine for FLAC but I'm not sure how this extends to other
formats.

Anyway, I guess that COMPOSER and CONDUCTOR are straightforward.

I'd also like to vote for PERFORMER (not SOLOIST).

And should it be ENSEMBLE or BAND or ORCHESTRA? "Ensemble" seems to be
recommended by the Vorbis folks... Slimserver currently seems to read
only BAND ... and I've read several references to ORCHESTRA. My vote
would be for Slimserver to read all three of these but to treat them as
equivalent.

Note for coder: there could be multiple instances of any of these tags
in one file, all should be considered equally valid.

(2) The second problem is the desired UI behaviour when using the
remote. I sketched one model two posts ago - Listener has decribed
another slightly different one. I like mine - obviously! Has anyone
else got any suggestions to throw into the pot?

The only thing I'd add in either case might be a Settings option to
make searching or browsing by these extra tags to be optional,
otherwise we'll be cluttering the UI for people who don't want to do
this.

More comments from anyone?

[slim] Slimp3 doesn't work with Netgear WGT624

2005-12-04 Thread damston

Hi,
I having some problems with my faithfull Slimp3. It worked perfectly
until I changed my router last month.
I had a linksys router and everything worked fine, but it died so I
bought a Netgear WGT 624. Since then, my Slimp3 won't play any music. I
can browse the server, manage playlist, do everything but listen to some
music. When I hit the "play" button, via remote or web interface,
nothing happens. Randomly, after 10 minutes or so, I can here a very
brief (0.5 seconds) part of the song.

The slimp3 is not Wi-Fi so it is of course wired directly to the
network (where everything else works fine).

I tried auto setup or manual, no change. I've updated my server,
deleted every settings, no change.

I use the dhcp server of the netgear WGT 624, but when I tried to
assign manually an IP adress to the slimp3 via the webinterface of the
router, I got an error message saying "wrong MAC adress".
The Mac adress of my slimp3 is 01-01-01-01-ff-01.
I'm begining to think that it is indeed wrong (I don't know much about
mac adresses) and that the router is blocking it in some way.

Any advice? My Slimp3 is one of the first ones and I think I remember
there was some way to change the mac adress, but I might be wrong.

Regards,
Damien

Interesting - remember that strips of aluminum
foil were used in World War II as anti-radar chaff.

Tinsel is currently made with aluminum foil
laminated in between layers of plastic or with
metallized polyester film. Sounds like your wife
got the aluminum kind!

So your wife inadvertently made "Christmas chaff"
which blocked the wireless signal.

[slim] Beware the christmas decorations!

2005-12-04 Thread DrNic

Hi all
Just thought I'd throw this one into the forums as a warning!!
The wife has just been plastering the house with the usual festive
decorations - mucho chintz tinsel (you didn't hear me say that -
right!).
I use FLAC on a wireless SB1 (I'm hoping Santa will bring a SB3..), and
normally don't ever have a problem with drop-outs. After the seasonal
shananigans were appropriately aranged (took a while!) up popped a few
drop-outs in the music... ARGHH!
My wireless signal had dropped down to 14% (usual ~45%)!
The culprit was tinsel around the Hi-fi stand (and near it!) - removing
this and the signal came back and drop-outs went!

I'm sure I've read somewhere about this before.
So - try to keep the tinsel down to a minimum - bah humbug :)

[slim] Force iTunes scan?

So I can't seem to force my slimserver to scan my itunes library. I've

Anyone have any tips?

Also, is anyone else having issues with Slimserver 6.2.1 not picking on
iTunes at all? For some reason, Slimserver was using a normal folder
scan to get my music, not an iTunes scan.

[slim] Re: AllofMP3.com

2005-12-04 Thread Jim

Great post Brian.

I buy the occasional second-hand CD, but think now won't ever buy a CD
again after this Sony rootkit farce.

I bought a few times from allofmp3.com but wasn't happy that they
included no EAC logs or cuesheets with their FLAC files so I had no way
of telling how they were ripped. Also whilst not supporting the RIAA
was good, the idea that some dodgy Russian guy was getting all the
money rather than a lot of dodgy American guys made it an easy
decision. I stopped.

I have a collection back home of about 800 original CD's in my parents
house that are never played by them - but officially I broke the law
when going overseas with a few hard drives and my entire collection
stored as FLAC. The industry would like to make sure I paid again
anyhow.

Now I just pirate music online in a true private lossless community,
there's always taking a chance with eMule but logs/cuesheets/integrity
cannot be trusted. I give money to charity when I never really used to
and do rarely buy some CD's, but from local up and coming bands I would
never have heard of or bought the CD - bands where you buy the CD from
the band themselves - where you can be sure the full 100% of your money
is funding their habits.

I'm not happy being a pirate, but ho ho ho shiver me timbers what else
to do? iTunes lossy garbage? No thanks.

If any band wants my custom, well I'll wait for the day they start
selling lossless DRM free music cause I won't ever trust a CD again.
Never used to agree with people CDRing copies of music when it all
started a few years ago, and always used to agree that piracy was wrong
- but the music industry eventually turned me against them.

Just got hold of up and coming James Blunt's album so I might send off
some money to him as I haven't seen him on MTV's Cribs yet, or maybe I
just donate to an injured soldiers charity - I'm sure he'd appreciate
it.

[slim] Problem, Can't open File

2005-12-04 Thread sfraser

I am runing SS 6.2.1 on XP. I am having an assue with recently added
disc's in regards to opening/playing some WAV files. I am using Browse
Music Folders. Oddly enough, all tracks seem to be recorded correctly
(using EAC, with no errors listed)They appear to be listed correctly,
but only the 1st track will play? All other trakc give me the following
"Problem opening file" This is consistant with 2 SB2's, so it would
appear to be a SS or EAC problem? Although, I can play all the tracks
correctly via Musicmatch??? Did I twist the wrong nerd knob somewhere
in EAC or SS? Any help would be appreciated.

P.S. I have tried re-recording the wav's, deleting and recording and
stop/start the SS service.

Thanks

It is really heating up, with recent reviews in a number of audiophile
websites. The SB2 and SB3 may help usher in a new wave of computer
audio, much the same way CD's caused a shift from LP to CD.

The IPOD deservedly gets its props for causing a revolution in audio,
but the IPOD is not a suitable replacement for a CD player in the home.

I have links to several of these articles in my blog about setting up
an audiophile music server based on the SB3.

Thanks Richard. So if I understand you correctly, the only way this can
be done is to save an individual url in my favorites and browse to there
if I want to control an individual SB.

That is also my understanding.

That is a *very* clunky solution.

But I don't regard it as a clunky solution. I used to have the
"Welcome to Squeezeboc" page (localhost:9000) bookmarked, but now I
have the bookmark set up as above to point to a particular player.

I'm surprised there is no easy way of forcing the server to serve a
specific box - I was expecting to see it in the player settings to be
honest. I'm new here - is it something I can register as an
enhancement?

Are sleepysurf and I alone in being irritated by this?

It's certainly one of the things that should be properly explained in
the manual or the wiki, but this method seems fine to me.
