[slim] Wpa-aes

2006-01-07 Thread chocomonsters

Does SB3 support WPA-AES? I can connect SB3 using WPA-Personal if I set
my WLAN with WPA TKIP encryption but not with WPA AES.

Not all of my laptops support WPA2 network authentication. Therefore I
am limited to WPA network authentication. I would like to use AES
encryption rather than TKIP, but I am not sure if SB3 supports WPA-AES.

3. clicked Now Playing, Play and the the right arrow
4. named the playlist

IMHO you can't enter a playlist name after hitting right in the now
playing screen. There you'll be presented details about the currently
playing song, nothing about a playlist.

Please give us some information about what exactly you'd like to do and
the steps that didn't do this for you. And add some details about player
and server version.

Many of us hope using Nokia 770 as a remote could bring user friendly UI
experience to SB3. Using skins is adequate at best as it still limits
us to webbased interface.

I would love to see Moose getting ported to support Nokia 770 as linux
front end. Or at least Moose like front end for linux platform like
Nokia 770.

I can only dream, right?

You can nearly do this using the Save Playlist plugin (which I guess is
what you have been using so far).

1 - find album
2 - play to start a new playlist
3 - find another album
4 - add to add to end of playlist
5 - repeat 3 4
6 - go to Plugins / Save Playlist
7 - name and save the playlist

If you subsequently want to add more, you can: load the playlist, add
stuff, save it again, you have to repeat the name (and if you give the
same name you DON'T get asked if you want to overwrite an existing
playlist, which I suppose mught be considered a bug).

Still, I think this is what you were looking for, more or less.

No, you could pick up programming instead and do this for all of us ;-).

While I'd love to see a Linux client I don't think Moose will ever be
ported to anything like the 770. As it's programmed in .net (afaik)
there's little chance for this to happen.

AFAIK the 770 skin is slimserver 6.5 only, and Infrant's still using

[slim] Re: SB3 loses connection to SlimServer

2006-01-07 Thread macattack

I'm losing connection as well but it happened when I added a SB3 to my
setup.

I'm running a linksys wrt54g with tailsman 1.1/Basic firmware with mac
address filtering, SSID hidden and WPA encryption. My SB2 always
worked flawlessly with this setup.

I just received my SB3 and added it to the network, it seems that
whenever both squeezeboxes are on, I start having network difficulties:
basically, it connects, I can listen for a bit and then it loses its
connection to slimserver.

[Note, I am not streaming from both SB's at the same time: one is
running super date time and the other playing music. Even after I
shut one of them off, I experience the same dropped connections. The
router hasn't rebooted either. SB2 gets 75% wireless signal strength
and SB3 gets 100%].

Sounds like you need the proposed flagman plugin, that has been
discussed at http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=18982

Or, if you are prepared to use your computer instead of the Player UI,
consider using instead some different software which is much better at
playlist generation and maintenance ... eg MusicMagic Mixer, which also

[slim] Understanding of shutting down a Win XP Server

2006-01-07 Thread Toby

In my earlier posts Switch on and off my server with the SB and No
More shutdown with xPLHal I tried to figure out, how to shutdown and
restart my Windows XP Server with my remote.

Now, I CAN shutdown my server pressing 1,2,3 on my remote and I ALSO
CAN restart my server pressing the power button on my remote.

BUT I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHO THAT WORKS ...

The standby mode was not really good because it is not reliable after a
couple of hours and the hibernate mode didn't work with my machine.

Now, the PC completely shutting down. That's good for me and my wishes.
BUT HOW DOES THAT WORKS???

I'm using xPLHal and the command-line utility NirCmd (see
www.nirsoft.net/utils/nircmd.html) with the command 'nircmd.exe exitwin
poweroff'.

Also I want to know, whether I could do the same under a Linux (i.e.
Debian, Knoppix, Ubuntu, SlimCD) system. Are there any tools for linux
shutting down and restart a server by pressing the remote? Not in a
schedule. Individual!

Thanks

1. hard reset of router and TURN OFF computer on which Slimserver is

2. Factory reset of SB3 (hold down Add button on remote when plugging

3. With the computer still switched OFF I was now able to go through

switched on).

4. Continue through the wireless setup on the SB3 until you reach the

5. Now turn ON computer on which slimserver is installed and your
computer's IP address should appear on the SB3's screen. You should now
be able to connect to slimserver and the SB3 should work (at least it
did for me).

A pretty simple procedure really - just having the computer switched
off... shame I wasted 2 hours tearing my hair out trying to figure it

get an error message. I feel dead in the water. Any suggestions?

You may not even need to uninstall and reinstall. Try Shut down
Slimserver, then Exit Slimserver, then reboot PC. That may well do
to the trick. Oh, and if you have a firewall, make sure that it's
enabled for Slimserver. Slimserver will get stuck on starting if the
firewall won't let it act as a server.

If that fails, uninstall and reinstall should do the trick.

[slim] Is there a sneaky way...

2006-01-07 Thread Siduhe

I think this is a problem there's no easy answer to...but if any group
of people know a sneaky round it, I reckon they'll be on here.

Not a SB issue as such, but I run slimserver (6.2.2) on a Linkstation
(i.e. Linux build). My music library is also on my Linkstation which
is mounted as a network share. However, I quite often use my laptop
(Windows XP) to create and play playlists (usually via MusicMagic, ob
not integrated with Slimserver).

Slimserver won't read playlists created in Windows - presumably because
the file references aren't the same. Is there any way round this
problem, such that Slimserver would be able read playlists created via
my laptop ? I can't think of one, but was curious if others with more
knowledge had.

[slim] Re: Slimserver-ready NSLU2 NAS or better?

2006-01-07 Thread Michaelwagner

Under $200 is a tough milestone. The slug costs a $100 or so, but then
you need a USB hard disk. So really you're up around $300 for a slug
solution. If you want to put your paging on a memory stick for better
performance, that's probably another hundred. So we're at $400 or so.
And then there's still a fair bit of work to shoehorn Slim in there
(either software or hardware or both). I've read that you really need
the 64MB of a FAT SLUG to get decent performance out of Slim running on
the slug. FAT SLUGs require you to be handy with a desoldering tool.

It might be possible to patch up a trimserver to shoehorn it into a
slug by removing code you don't need or want, but it's a big project.
Some of it is easy - remove all the plugins you don't want, stick to
only one or two music formats (the different music readers are loaded
dynamically only if needed). But shortly after that, it gets harder to
find memory savings, harder to maintain and there are those diminishing
returns. You could remove the windows specific code, but that's small.

If only I could find a USB ram stick that wasn't flash memory ... in
that case, it might run closer to the theoretical 400MB/S that USB 2
could do, and it would be a good swap device for the slug (anyone here
old enough to remember dedicated swap devices?).

In the windows area, there are these:

http://www.stealthcomputer.com/littlepc.htm

but even the little ones are $850 (US prices even though they're in
Canada, I hate that!) with Red Hat Unix, a grand with Windoz.

You can get little VIA mini-ATX systems for about half a grand, if
you're in the US. For us guys in Canada, I'm having a hard time finding
a source. And you still have to do the customization yourself.

I gave up and bought a W2K laptop used. About $500. Runs windoz, which
I know, has a keyboard and a screen already attached :-), built-in UPS.
Since I already had another from the same series (Dell C610), I have
interchangeability of hard disks, batteries and CD-ROM readers, etc.

The other option is a buffalo linkstation. Not that easy to get here.
Tigerdirect.ca claims to have them and can mail them to you. From them
the linkstation is about $300 Cdn with a 250GB hard disk in it. From
what I've read, the gigabit linkstations are too easy to brick, but the
ones that only speak 100BaseT are better behaved. The linkstation comes
with 64MB instead of the slug's 32, and it seems that's a big
difference.

I went by a retail store that Tiger has near my path to work, but they
didn't seem to have any there (and little in the way of support staff).

Have you enabled the Slimserver Program itself rather than just the

To enable a program by using Windows Firewall, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, click Run, type wscui.cpl in the Open box, and then
click OK.
2. Click Windows Firewall.
3. In the Windows Firewall dialog box, click the Exceptions tab, and
then click Add Program.
4. In the Add a Program dialog box, either select the program from the
list that appears, or click Browse to locate your program.
5. After you select your program, click OK.
6. On the Exceptions tab, make sure that the check box next to your

Then shutdown and reboot.

[slim] SB1 SB3 out of sync with FLAC tracks

2006-01-07 Thread mecouc

I've got an SB1 and an SB3. They play in sync perfectly well with MP3
files. When a FLAC file creeps into the playlist, they're about half a
second apart, leading to an odd sound in a room where I can hear both.
Oddly, some tracks are improved markedly with this technique, with
interesting synchopation and harmonic effects appearing. I'm not sure
which player's behind.

Obviously I can work around it by not playing FLACs but I'd prefer to
just leave them playing entirely randomly.

2006-01-07 Thread Kevin Weller
I've been looking for a way to look at what's in my SlimServer db and
Moose (v.020) seems just the ticket...if I could get it working!

I suspect I've done something daft.

When I load the program it sits there 'Awaiting server response'. If I
open the Library page the display at the bottom says 'Connected to
server.. logging in.. please wait'.

Local details: This is on Win XP Pro SP2, SlimServer is sitting on
another machine and there's no security on it so username and password
are blank, clicking the browser button brings up my SlimServer web page
correctly, server IP contains the same IP as the server url, CLI port
is at the default 9090 (I've no idea how to check it on SlimServer so I
assume it's OK, I tried turning off the SP2 firewall and that didn't
make any difference... I don't know what else I can tell you.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

[slim] Re: Understanding of shutting down a Win XP Server

2006-01-07 Thread Toby

Thank you for your answer, Pat.

In my understanding before, I thought that I need the standby or
hibernate mode to awake the server again. But now, it seems that I can
shut down the server completely and by pressing the power button, the
squeezebox sends a magic packet and the server is starting up again. I
didn't know that before. So I do not need any standby or hibernate
mode.

There are many reasons for me to shut down the server with the remote
because I'm a lazy bone ... ;-)

The servers place is in my cellar, the SB is in my living room upstairs
and in a few weeks I have a new music-, reading-, television-room under
the roof. Than, there is also a SB. Reaching the server means walking
down THREE floors.

It makes sense for me, shutting down by remote. Also I save a lot of
money and it's eco friendly ...

What else should I do? Is there a low cost and eco friendly solution
for a server being up all the time???

Now I have an old ATX-machine, AMD 1GHz, 3ware raid system and external
storage for double save. In the case my house is burning down I still
have my datas, because they are in my fathers house.

Across a switch, there is a very tiny delay and the potential of a

delay to a level where it would be insignificant for this use.

Across a wireless access point? I expect all bets are off. I'm not sure
multicast will offer any advantages there ...

You need to reconsider your definition of instantaneous. :)

Sound only travels at measely 1.1 feet per millisecond, so even if your
synchronization were only accurate to within a millisecond, you would
still be synced to just a small fraction of the distance between your
speakers.

The thing is NTP can even do a lot better than 1ms... how accurate you
can get is mostly a function of variance over long periods time in the
latency of the network/OS (and this is very low for Squeezeboxes on a
wireless lan), NOT the absolute timing between hosts.

i.e. it doesn't matter if one machine is directly connected and the
other is on wireless, you can compensate for this with a high degree of
accuracy, provided you can make reasonable assumptions about the latency
being consistent and symmetric for trasmit vs receive (which lucky for
us it is).

When you consider the speed of sound (30,000 uS between rooms) vs the
speed of 802.11g (600 uS to go the same distance) it makes sense that
even our simple go now! signal should work in most cases (usually
within 2-5ms). But with NTP (or similar protocol) it could be a lot
more accurate, and there are other sync improvements that would be
possible once a solid continuous time base is available, eg using
multicast to save bandwidth, and drifting instead of rebuffering to
align clocks.

I'm cheap, and willing to save the earth when possible.
But I leave my computers on all the time. Most of them
do not have monitors. Or go into standby pretty quickly.

There are lots of arguments pro and con about
turning things on and off. Most (many?) failures happen
during thermal and electrical stress. I put the machines
on a UPS and leave them running. Most get down below 100 watts
when idle on their own.

A SlimServer doesn't need a lot of CPU power, no need for
a Pentium 4 power sucker.

The real question is what is the actual saving between
hibernation and being powered off? and at what duty
cycle does the inrush power and startup overcome
any theological savings?

I tend to play music a lot on my SqueezeBoxen,
it makes no sense to me to turn it off.

Of the components in my music system, the PC is nothing.
The class-A circuits in my Classe power amp overwhelm it.
I bet the Benchmark DAC-1 draws as much as the PC, the Benchmark
runs hot to the touch.

Mark,

Wow, I had pretty much given up on this - then I was just browsing the

Now, regarding this issue:

Mark Lanctot Wrote:
Your SlimServer will have to stream data to your router through your SB,

I'm trying to be able to stream data to the Squeezebox without using
any kind of wireless connection at all - except for internet radio.
This would be for minimizing the possibility of dropouts or glitches.
But it looks like that can't happen with the configuration I had
proposed in my original post.

So how about this idea? Suppose I got, say, a USB wireless adapter for
the server. Then file transfers between the server in the living room
and my main computer in the spare bedroom would go through the wireless
USB adapter. How about if I enabled internet connection sharing (ICS)
on the server and connected its ethernet port (from the built-in NIC on
the mobo) to the ethernet port on the Squeezebox. Then the Squeezebox
would be configured for a plain old wired connection, with no wireless
or bridging or anything like that. Does this sound like it would work?

Is this error set related to the dropouts? I remember before I had

You are correct, sir.

Maybe someone'll fix it sometime. In the meantime, I'll just continue
pulling what little hair I have left, out.

Thanks Avi - its good to confirm it is correct!

I think the library should handle all the cases OK as it looks for
embedded strings within the string which should be reversed.

I will look to get this into 6.5...

[slim] Re: fribidi integration (hebrew)

2006-01-07 Thread mack

Triode Wrote:
 OK I have a file.

Could a Hebrew reader have a look at the two attachments?

Unflipped is prior to flipping the reversed text, flipped is the result
 with flipping.

Does the flipped one look right? The library puts the numbers at the
right hand end if there are numeric characters prepended to the string
 - is this correct? [not that I can do anything about it!]

Yes, it looks great. And yes, the number should be on the right.
Thats the start of the string in hebrew.

Note that if you use Locale::Hebrew, it only works well for unicode
hebrew, whereas most tags are still ISO hebrew. Therefore, I wrote my
own patch which handles both unicode hebrew and iso hebrew. (Thanks
for the note about Locale::Hebrew - it solved my problem). I'm not a
perl developer so my code probably sucks, but here it is anyway. I put
it in Graphics.pm, at the beginning of String(). My code is between the
Mack comments.

code
sub string {
my $fontname = shift || return '';
my $string   = shift || return '';

# Mack
use Locale::Hebrew;
for my $ord (unpack('U*', $string)) {
# Convert ASCII Hebrew to Unicode Hebrew if required.
if ($ord  223  $ord  251) {
require Encode;
$string = Encode::decode('iso-8859-8',
$string);
last;
}
}
$string = hebrewflip($string);
# /Mack

my $bits = '';
/code

(Sorry about lack of indentation. The forum seems to drop the tabs
upon submitting).

This code seems to produce correct results in all files I checked. The
manual test for ASCII hebrew was added because Encode::decode crashed on
certain unicode strings.

Now, the only problem I failed to solve is the scrolling. When a long
hebrew string needs scrolling, it should start by showing the rightmost
part of the string first, and scroll towards the leftmost part of the
string. I can't find the part that controls scrolling. Is it handled
by the firmware itself ? Any way to change the scrolling behavior as
described here ?

Thanks,
Mack

[slim] Re: Remote Button Sensitivity

2006-01-07 Thread CavesOfTQLT

This annoyance occurs on both my SB2/SB2 remote and SB3/SB3 remote.
There was talk of it being possibly due to the SB being in a room
surrounded by glass windows/reflective surfaces. As my SB2 is in a
conservatory surrounded by glass windows I thought this could be the
case and thought nothing more of it, but when I got my SB3 (with a
dodgy display I might add) this is also showing the problem and it's in
a standard wallpapered room, so I don't know.

I have also noticed that when browsing through the menus it can do a
double jump, and, in the majority of cases, immediately pressing the
opposite direction button also causes it to jump back a double jump, as
though it's something to do with the displayed info.

I agree that it needs sorting as when it happens it's a RPITA
especially if you know the next entry in the menu is the one you want
to select.

[slim] Synchronization

2006-01-07 Thread prvtpyle

Just got the Squeezebox yesterday. Main reason I got it was the
synchronization feature that the sales guy assured me that it had.
Well, as I have now learned the hard way (after reading this forum for
a few hours and trying various things) the synch doesn't work as
advertised. My softsqueeze player is consistently ~1 sec behind my
squeezebox.

Before I give up on it completely, wanted to make a post of my own to
see if someone could provide a checklist of steps to try to synch the
squeezebox and softsqueeze. As of now, I have already:
1) installed the most recent Java and (1.5.0_06) and softsqueeze
version (2.2)
2) Set audio to Primary Sound Driver
3) Installed Java MP3 plugin
4) Verified that the wireless connection is good (also connected it via
ethernet cable and still have ~1 sec delay with squeezebox first)
5) Tried different music sources (iTunes, no iTunes, radio) and all had
same delay.

Any ideas? I have seen many synch posts in here, but no comprehensive
set of steps to try to resolve.

Thanks!

Pyle

Another alternative you might want to consider is home-plug ethernet -
using your mains to carry IP from one room to another. Put one in one
room, another in the other room, and off you go. This sort of thing -

myself, as wireless works well for me, but I can see the attraction)

2006-01-07 Thread ajmitchell

Got my PC up again today, and loaded some more albums - decided to test
the special characters problems more systematically.

Heres the results.

[a] Slimserver Synch with itunes 6

Andúril [song title] by Howard Shore [artist] from The Lord of the
Rings - The Return of the King [album] = crashes slim.exe after
1-5seconds.

[b] Slimserver Synch with itunes 6

Anduril [RENAMED song title] by Howard Shore [artist] from The Lord of
the Rings - The Return of the King [album] = PLAYS PERFECTLY

[c] Slimserver direct read off hard disk

Andúril [renamed song title] by Howard Shore [artist] from The Lord of
the Rings - The Return of the King [album] = crashes slim.exe almost
immediately

[b] Slimserver Synch direct read off hard disk

Anduril [renamed song title] by Howard Shore [artist] from The Lord of
the Rings - The Return of the King [album] = PLAYS PERFECTLY

I then repeated the experiment with the most complicated song name I
could find: Vðrar Vel Til Loftárása [title] Sigur Rós [artist] Ágætis
Byrjun[album].

Results were the same.

I concludethis is not an itunes integration issue but a more
serious problem in slimserver itself. Clearly not everyone has this
problem so there are probably some other variables.

Next step?

I am happy to forward the files.

It took about 18 hours for MoodLogic to process the tracks. Not to long
considering! I've still got lots of tracks I hardly ever listen to but,
because there is always music playing somewhere in the house, we have
listened to every track at least once! MoodLogic is really useful for

Synchronization works between hardware players. It will not always work with

[slim] Re: Wireless bridging Q: Will it see the server?

2006-01-07 Thread Mark Lanctot

andy_c Wrote:
 Mark,

Wow, I had pretty much given up on this - then I was just browsing the
forum and saw your thorough, detailed posts. Thank you very much!

You're welcome, I just hope it will work for you. I think it will.

 Now, regarding this issue:

I don't know much about ICS. As I understand it, it turns the *PC*
into a bridge, either wired or wireless. The Squeezebox and the server
would not necessarily see each other in this mode. I could be wrong,
but ICS is just that - Internet Connection Sharing - it shares the
Internet connection to devices downstream, but does not allow traffic
between a downstream PC and the ICS PC. The ICS PC is not acting as a
proper router, it doesn't know what IP address is where, nor can it
direct LAN packets to their appropriate destination, only WAN
(Internet) packets.

The wireless connection is not bad at all! There are no glitches,
playback is perfect. There can be dropouts if the buffer underruns
though, but the buffer is really quite large - you ought to try it with
an MP3 some time, it really takes a long time to empty.

There are various tests you can do to see if you have the required
bandwidth. For example, try the Network Test Plugin:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=18149 If you can
achieve 1500 kbps (2000 kbps preferred) at 100% you will never
experience a dropout with FLAC.

As I said in my post, I am in a very poor wireless networking
situation. Yours is almost surely better than mine. I have never
experienced a dropout caused by wireless bandwidth starvation.

The drawbacks of your apartment situation is the presence of other
wireless networks. But the advantages are less distance and no
floor/ceiling to go through. I am going through 2 walls, 1 floor and
30-40 feet of air.

[slim] Re: Remote Button Sensitivity

2006-01-07 Thread tyler_durden

I think the problem is in the remote control unit itself. When you
press and hold the arrow button the remote repeatedly sends the command
to change the display (flip the menu). If the remote sends it too
quickly, or the buttons aren't well debounced, it will send the command
out multiple times and go further than you want. The server is just
doing what the remote tells it to do.

This can be fixed either in the remote control or in the server
software. If the server is simply programmed to recognize multiple
menu flip commands and just ignore every second one. Then it will
still respond to a single push (when you manage to let go quick enough
to not send multiple commands) but will automatically ignore excess
commands.

WMA - no gapless possible (format is broken)

MP3 - no gapless possible (format is broken) - some hacks do exist but
slimserver doesn't support them
WAV - works fine
Vorbis/OGG - works fine
FLAC - works fine with one caveat : client side decoding of FLAC
sometimes glitches at transitions

I use a mixture of vorbis FLAC, for the FLAC files I have it decoding

why.

I'm messing with the same code at the moment to achieve the same goal
(Hebrew). If you need help or assistance, please send me PM too.

Actually, I believe when sync'ing it reverts to lowest-common-denominator so it would be transcoded to WAV or MP3 depending on server settings. Could be wrong though.Ben

Flac is not native on SB1, but if you have SB2/3 synced in a group with
an SB1 then the server finds the best matching format for playback. in
this case, WAV.

[slim] True Type fonts

2006-01-07 Thread dangerous_dom

I read a review for the SB3, which said that it supports true type
fonts. I did not think this was the case. Is it true and if it is, how
do you change them/add new ones?

it supports the use of a couple truetype fonts for unicode handling.
CODE2000.TTF for one.

There is also a utility to convert Truetype fonts to the font format
used for slimserver.

The SBG version of the software is here:
http://mylefteye.com/sbgfonts/

the SB2 version, I think, was posted here a while back. it is called
TTF2SB2.EXE

It worked!

I downloaded the 2.0 beta version of softsqueeze and everything is all
synched now. The whole house is blasting Radiohead at me.

This thing is so sweet...

[slim] Missing Perl Files

2006-01-07 Thread jdonelan

Hi there

I'm using SlimServer 6.2 and recently tried downloading some plugins to
use. I've tried both AlienBBC and RadioPlayList and both fail to be
added as SlimServer plugins. I've tracked it down to missing .pm files
from my distribution (see below).

Does anyone know where I can get my hands on the /Slim directory that
contains Slim/Utils/Prefs.pm modules (and the rest)?

Thanks - James.
