I really hope you'll work on this. The current implementation is a
real kludge. It's one of the few areas left where the Squeezebox
really lacks elegance / usability.

How it should work:

Integrate everything together. Selecting a service provided through
Squeezenetwork would log you in, transparently. Switching to
Squeezeserver sourced content would log you out of Squeezenetwork,
transparently. Turning the box off, or a predefined period of
inactivity, would also log you out of Squeezenetwork.

[slim] Re: Tired of turning squeebox on/off

2006-02-09 Thread James

FYI I changed my default slimserver to 6.5 at the weekend, and so far
the SB1 has reconnected automatically each time I've restarted my PC
(only twice so far).

Trouble is I can't imagine why 6.5 would make any difference - surely
all that sort of logic is in the Squeezebox?

[slim] Re: NY times/ Pandora

2006-02-09 Thread ceejay

My very limited trials with pandora haven't been very rewarding so far
... but I love last.fm, thanks to James' plugin.

Having read that excellent blog comparison, and the comments thereon,
it seems that the two services are "scratching two different itches"
and that support for both would be ideal.

If Slim are going to incorporate pandora into Squeezenetwork, is there
any chance of maintaining a level playing field by giving a similar
integration to last.fm (crudely, putting the last.fm plugin onto the
Squeezenetwork servers - though I realise there's a bit more than
that!)?

Ceejay.

Anyway, don't get me wrong, I think this is great news for SlimDevices!

Lack og gigabit ethernet and SATA are not going to hamper performance as
far as streaming music is concerneed. Well, unless you are supporting
many flients, but then you will probably run into a throughput issue
with the usit anyway, especially if it was capable of hosting
slimserver itself.

However i would have bandwidth concerns with the lack of gigabit when
connecting multiple units together.

Do you really think so? I respect your opinion, but I'm not seeing

Pandora has a fraction of the music available on Rhapsody Radio or
Launchcast. There is no way to browse it, only a clunky searcher.
Notwithstanding the highfalutin language ("music genome"), it's no
better at guessing what I'd like. It streams in a medium-resolution
format that isn't going to sound much better on an audiophile
Squeezebox than on a Ratty Old Kopykat Unit.

So why has the premium hardware maker teamed up with the Brand X
service provider? Surely not because of their shared philosophy of
openness:

seanadams Wrote:
> It's not DRM in the usual sense, but yes there are reasons why we

Indeed, Pandora seems to be paranoid not about the rights to the music
itself, but about some bot deducing their suggestion algorithm.

Not, I hope, because Slim wants to join a box+service battle:
Isomething+Itunes vs. Roku+Rhapsody vs. Slim+Pandora. If so, I fear
Slim is on the wrong horse; but, more importantly, it's the beginning
of the end of the open-source, open-format idea.

So, what's going on? Are the big players just too afraid of open
source altogether to deal with Slim at all?

We expect this to be the first of many horses, and we're not
interested in forcing anyone to use any particular music source. Our
goal is ALL THE MUSIC and we're happy to let users decide which
services they'll get it from. However, there are practical and legal
limits to which non-open/non-mp3 ones we can bring online, and how
quickly. Please don't assume that because our software is open source
that we oppose non-free-anything - our software roadmap has always
indicated plans to support more formats and more music sources
including DRM ones. As much as we'd like everyone to use sensible file
formats and open interfaces, we're just not big enough to drive that,
so instead we'll try to just make it all available and let you decide.

2006-02-09 Thread rick's cafe

Great post and very pleased to hear that Pandora will be a part of SN.

my question is .. Will the free service still be offered to SN users.
It is not that I am averse to paying 36 bucks a year for the facility..
but as mentioned above.. thoses who live outside of the states (like me
in the UK) have issues in getting the paid service.

I have used pandora before (in the UK) but am limited to the free
service.. which puts a small ad on screen sure it can be a bit of a
pain but for free music streams I really dont mind...

so... will us poor folk outside of the US be able to use pandora on
our SB/SN beyond the 90 trial period... any chance of them incorporating
the free (listen to an ad first) service?

Thanks, Sean: that is what I hoped to hear. Your well-known
discretion about ongoing negotiations may lead to unrealistic
speculation that things like Rhapsody are coming Real Soon Now. Then
something like this may seem more a disappointing substitute than a
parallel option.

I do hope some of the important "practical and legal limits" can be
overcome in time. We like it to sound good and look good, but, as you

Back when my company was trying to stream our 40,000 CDs (which had
every pop/country/r-b/hiphop/house/ cd that anyone would want)
the RIAA ran us out of business over their legal limits.

They may have changed a little over the years, but the rules are
convoluted and written for one and only one reason: to maintain
the major label/RIAA business model that they have used for
50+ years. The RIAA wrote the DMCA, the US Congress just
rubber stamped it. The law is clear that radio stations
are legal as long as the proper fees are paid. The key
about radio stations is that the station operator, not
the listener, controls the music selection.

Even if they have learned a little over the years, the
field is a minefield. The RIAA reflects its owners, which
are the four (or it is five this month) major record labels.

I don't know if there are plans to offer audio ads, but for now the

Re: [slim] Songbird

2006-02-09 Thread Mark Lanctot
I gotta wonder - what's with the Songbird logo
bird farting? :-D

It seems to be referencing something specific. It
appears everywhere the logo appears.

Examples:

http://69.90.210.150/themes//gespaa_customized/extn_birdmeditating.png

http://69.90.210.150/themes/gespaa_customized/dev_masthead.png

In that last image, they even have a specification
list pointing to the gas plume. :-)

Regarding SlimServer/Squeezebox support, I tried
the program out briefly yesterday and apart from a
link to Slim's website, I didn't see anything
specific.

Mind you, the program doesn't do anything I can't
already do. Although it looks very slick already,
I uninstalled it.

I like the fact that it's open-source, based on
Firefox, and free. I'll keep an eye on it and
when it can do something
SlimServer/foobar2000/Firefox can't, I'll install
it again.

Re: [slim] Nokia 770 & Slimserver- Any regrets?

2006-02-09 Thread ron thigpen

No regrets here. It's a fantastic device.

My two main uses are web+email when traveling (no lugging a laptop), and
SB rich remote. There are some limitations, but I'm living with them.

Biggest flaws:

--The native email client is rough. Nokia has committed to improvement.
For now I just use my webmail, which works very well.

--Memory and CPU limitations. This is balanced by the fact that
limiting these resources makes for better battery life. There are small
lags, and you can only load so many apps at once, but it's not really so
bad. Of course I look forward to future models, but I will happily use
this one until then. And some of the performance issues will improve as
better software is released.

Some other flaws (WPA-PSK, inline HTTP auth URLs, performance) have
already been addressed in software.

And of course it's been hard waiting for the stable release of SS6.5 w/
the 770 skin. I'm running a reasonably operable nightly cut and that's
working for now.

And for an unexpected joy: tune in to a SlimServer stream using the 770
music player, jump over to the 770 skin to control it, pop in
headphones, put the 770 in your pocket and move around. Portable,
personal radio (on a WiFi and battery leash, but still...).

I'm happy.

The company I work for has twenty years worth of products, and the ERs are
currently in the 86,000 range. Product Managers go through it on a regular
basis and close the ERs that aren't going to get fixed soon -- but first
they copy them onto index cards and hang them on a wall by the breakroom
on the developer's floor.

Will stuff get fixed? Depends some on the number of developers, but it
depends even more on the development direction and what developers are
passionate about. A vast swatch of bugs were recently obviated by
architectural changes that made them moot, which of course introduced new
bugs... but would the architecture change have happened if the developers
were being held to "fix all these first"? Another decent chunk of bugs
could be obviated by another pretty minor architectural change, but the
lead developer in that functional area doesn't want to do it, so those
keep getting bandaided. Eventually the weight of bandaids leads to a de
facto architectural change.

Forget rocket surgery, software development is the most complex human
endeavor. It ain't pretty, but just be thankful that the SDI bugzilla is
open to the public and as small as it is :)

[slim] SB 2 vs 3 differences

2006-02-09 Thread GQB

Is there anyplace I can get a detailed list of the differences between
Squeezebox 2 and 3? I have a 2 and want to know what (other than
optical out) I don't have on my SB2.
Since all new PR from Slim is about the SB3, I often don't know if a
feature is hardware or software (i.e. upgradable) based.

[slim] What Remote Control?

2006-02-09 Thread montechristo

Just pondering what remote solution for the living room.

Requirements are

1. Able to display Album Art
2. No Cables
3. Battery powered, (nowhere to plug mains in next to the sofa
4. Very user friendly, must pass teh Wife Test
5. Capable of being setup to control the Amp, CD Player, TV, e.t.c

And thats all.

I have been thinking about a Phillips Pronto for years, but don't
reckon that will support Album Art?

And I think that any universal remotes are also out.

Here's a nasty hack: if you don't mind putting a tiny hole in the
remote overlay, you could poke through it at that location with a small
pin to transmit the code and program it into your universal.

The change is also due in part to the fact that Amazon used to say the
SB3 shipped in "1 to 2 months". I can't imagine anyone would have

I still can't see why people would order it from Amazon. What's the

Some non-techies are more comfortable ordering from Amazon than
manufacturer-direct. Also people get gift cards, amazon promos, and

[slim] Re: Nokia 770 & Slimserver- Any regrets?

2006-02-09 Thread mattg

I returned my 770 after two weeks. I bought it primarily for use as a
Squeezebox remote. While the Nokia 770 Slimserver skin is great to
look at and easy to use, the 770 is just too slow to make it useful for
me. I could walk over to the Squeezebox and find my music much faster
using the standard remote than I could sitting on my couch with the
770.

I would have kept the 770 if I had a need for a portable web browser,
because it excels at that, but as a Squeezebox remote I found it
lacking. Again, this is no reflection on the great Nokia 770 skin,
it's the hardware that isn't up to it.

Here in the UK the quality of Amazon's after sales service is second to
none. My daughter's Creative Zen Micro developed a fault eight months
after buying it from Amazon. I emailed them asking how to get it
repaired and within half an hour they emailed back saying they would

2006-02-09 Thread Kevin O. Lepard

 > A SqueezeNetwork feature? Interesting.

Can you give us more details?

It's really simple. You'll add your pandora account in Squeezenetwork
settings, and then from the Squeezebox UI you'll see "Pandora Radio" at
the top level. Press right and choose to either view your stations or
create a new one by searching for artists or songs.

I'm probably being dense here, but the web page at Slim Devices seems
to suggest that this is ready now, and I can't get it running.

I can't find anywhere in the Squeezenetwork pages where I add my
Pandora information, and I can't seem to find to where to browse
anywhere with my SB2 to find it. Nor can I find a place to enter it
in Slimserver.

Is it not running yet, or alternately, can you explain it to me like
I'm 3? I've been waiting for this and paid my $36 today to Pandora
today. :-)

Thanks.

[slim] DTS files

2006-02-09 Thread Pale Blue Ego

I'm really enjoying the ability to play surround files on the SB3. I've
converted all my DTS CDs to FLAC files. I'm also considering a purchase
of software which would allow me to create DTS files from SACDs and
DVDs.

One concern is how to keep these files from being played as whitenoise
in Squeezeboxes that are NOT hooked up to a DTS decoder. I'm using DTS
as a separate genre, so I can limit it from Random Mixes, but they could
still come up in an artist playlist.

Would it be possible to consider .dts as a separate filetype, then have
an option to enable or disable DTS playback for each player? That would
seem to be the most elegant solution.

[slim] Jukebox frontend

2006-02-09 Thread Kurt

Is there any software or skin that can put the Slim into a true Jukebox
mode? For instance, just display albums with track names, and play
whatever ever track you choose, and force the following choices to go
to the end of the list, and lock out everything else?

This would be great for a party where guests can choose the music.
The trouble now is that someone will come along and put a bunch of
music in the queue, and the next person picks a song and presses play
or next instead of "add to playlist" and the existing lineup is
trashed.

Go to the WebUI, you said that you can get to it from the machine
running Slimserver with http://localhost:9000. Then select "Server
Settings" in the left frame. Then Select the "Security" Tab. About
half way down you will see a section labeled "BLOCK INCOMING
CONNECTIONS" make sure this is set to "Do Not Block". If it is set to
block, by default Slimserver only accepts connections from the
localhost.

If that isn't the problem, don't worry, we'll get to the bottom of it.

[slim] Re: What Remote Control?

2006-02-09 Thread radish

All PDAs run on batteries. The difficulty will be in having a single
device which can control the SB (via web/telcanto in order to get album
art) and other devices (via IR). Many PDAs do have IR emitters, but they
tend to be weak and/or facing the wrong direction. So you need a
seperate IR emitter card (they exist for CF slots) as well as IR remote
software. It also means you're switching between apps depending on what
you're controlling - nasty.

What _I_ would do is use something like a Nokia 770 (or a wifi PDA, but
I think the 770 does a better job of the web), and then use the SB's IR
blaster functionality to control the other devices through that.

In my case the album art is not really important, so I use a universal
remote. I'm very happy with the Harmony products - excellent WAF and
the new ones with the color screen look the part.

2006-02-09 Thread atlslim

Unlike mattg I'm definitely enjoying the Nokia 770 in combination w/
Ben's sweet skin. I can access my music collection much more
efficiently using the 770 versus standard remote. It goes without
saying that browse by artwork has a real "wow" factor using a
browser-based remote.

There was a recent firmware upgrade for the 770 that has improved its
'snappiness' but you don't want to have lots of other apps running in
the background or things do slow down. Also, you will need to run the
6.5 (beta) version of slimserver as the 770 skin is not supported in
earlier releases.

Ben continues to update/improve the skin and I am officially "hooked".

atlslim beat me to it, but I wonder if mattg tried the updated 770
firmware? I find the 770 almost perfect as a SB remote but I'm really
surprised at just how much I use it for regular browsing. I bought it
primarily for SB use, but now use it much more as a web tablet. I
haven't even begun to explore using it as a media player (that's next).
To answer the original question, no regrets whatsoever. It massively
exceeded my expectations already.

The 770 firmware updates have improved performance somewhat.

One area that may improve soon is network performance when using an
encrypted wireless link. I believe I read where the encryption work may
be offloaded to the DSP chip, speeding it up greatly.

Another factor for performance will likely be the forthcoming changes to
the SlimServer itself.

In particular, the changes to the skin code (better CSS based layouts,
fewer image widgets) and server-side album art resizing and caching
should reduce the CPU and memory requirements of any browser displaying
the SS web interfaces. Most desktop users may only notice minor
improvements, but it may be an huge boost for users of slow systems and
handheld devices.

All of which is just icing on the cake as it is working acceptably for
me now. Sorry you didn't have a better experience with yours.

If SqueezeNetwork is hosting Pandora for streaming to SqueezeBox, would the

To really make it usable in such a scenario, you'd need a few more
constraints. Keep in mind that a commercial jukebox has a critical
limiting factor - $money. You generally don't get a single person
stacking the jukebox for the whole night, just because it usually costs
too much.

You'd want (configurable) controls such as:

- Only tracks, not albums could be queued. Otherwise it's too easy for
someone to load up an hour or two of music in a shot.

- You'd want to limit the number of tracks that could be added to N per
M minutes. This would effectively limit how many tracks someone can add
at one time.

A good way to do this would be to add credits every N minutes, or else
when there's less than some number of songs remaining in the queue.

- Optionally, limit the length of a tune that can be played to under N
seconds. Keeps people from playing stuff like the 33 minute Allman
Brothers' "Mountain Jam" (that was in a CD jukebox in a bar I used to
go to - it was killed by the bartender within 10 seconds of starting
any time someone played it).

- Also optionally, no STOP or POWER OFF, no FFW, no RWD, no skipping
tracks without some kind of authorization code.

Cool idea, but I'm guessing a lot of work to implement.

[slim] Re: File format selection

2006-02-09 Thread stoobie-doo

I don't mean to thread-jack, but I just discovered this thread as I
start re-ripping my CDs to FLAC (most are currently in 128 or 160
AAC).

I am currently using a Belkin Pre-N router in my config; SB3 usually
shows about 60-65% signal strength, and SlimServer reports via Windows
connect speed usually at 24-36 MBps; signal strength ~-75-79db.

What should I have in my file format screen of SlimServer for FLAC and
AAC? Right now everything is checked and I am not sure now what that
means and whether FLAC is streaming as FLAC and whether I can get
uncompressed music without dropouts in my config.

One last question - my receiver (Harmon Kardon 8000) can detect and
natively decode MP3 signals over digital inputs. Would I be better off
having it do that, and can I make the SB3 send the MP3 signal instead
of a PCM signal?

One thing I'd love to have, even without the idea of jukebox style
controls, is the visual interface of a jukebox. Namely, a view where
you could browse through albums with cover art and with all tracks
visible.

This is something I've always hoped to see in SlimServer - that when
I'm looking at a list of albums, whatever the browse mode, I'd have the
option of viewing the tracks on those albums without descending another
level. I could browse to some artist, say "Santana", and easily see
which album or albums have the track I'm looking for. Right now, you
either have to do a search or else you poke around forever to find a
track while browsing.

2006-02-09 Thread RDaneel

It's hard for me to answer this question - as I don't have a SqueezeBox
yet! My SB3 is out being modded before arriving, so all my experience
with the 770 is with SoftSqueeze.

So far, though, it's a killer app for the 770. I agree that snappier
performance would be nice (I have the newest firmware, which is good,
but it's not desktop speed, of course) for loading. However, that is a
relatively minor nit - it is still FAR faster to use this interface than
the OEM remote. Plus, it looks awesome and the 770 makes a fun toy in
other ways...

I highly recommend jumping on this combo. If fuzzyT is right, things
are only going to get better! I run WPA encryption, so offloading to
the DSP would be awesome.

The only thing I've ever seen like that is Music Lobby by Cinemar, but
I think it's tied to J River Media Center.

As far as the useability, I think most controls sould be locked out by
an authorization code. I guess I'm not too worried about people
playing entire albums. Even if there was a skin that somehow only let
you "add to playlist" would be a start...

I think this might have been asked before but... when you have the 770

When I use the 770 skin with my PSP, it takes about 15 to 25 seconds to
"wake up", connect to my network and refresh. I'm 50% vested in buying
a Nokia 770 like next week, but I'm just wondering if it will feel much
faster than my PSP. I can have 3 webpages open on my PSP's browser but
the touch-screen of the Nokia 770 is the selling point for me.
Speaking of which, how well does the touch screen work with the 770

You don't say what universal remote you have or what format you need the
IR code in so I don't know if this is of any use to you.

The IR code (or command or OBC?) would be decimal 24 (i.e. hexadecimal
18).

(You can also arrive at this by counting the buttons and spaces for

The protocol is NEC and the device number is 110 (decimal) or 6E hex

Let's just say that a big part of my decision to buy a sb1 and then a
sb2 was that I, personally, oppose non-free-anything. Well, maybe
oppose is to strong a word ... dislike, maybe.

That squeezenetwork would be used for content tie-ins was clear from
the beginning, and I was very much looking forward to that. Only now I
must admit I'm a little bit disappointed as I was hoping for something
more

- global.
At the moment this seems to be US only.

- open
Why use a binary / DRM component at all? An username + password
combination should be enough to make sure everyone has paid up. Yes,
people could share passwords but only on a very small scale before it
raises alarms. Works well enough for: MMORPGs and adult sites. And
yes, people might download some content and save it, but after all
this is like a radio and that I can legally tape all I want. Nobody is
gonna "pirate" content at playback speed.

- high quality
128kbit/s mp3 is just not the state of the art

- less mainstream
People keep saying that you can't dictate the interface protocols to
music services. True, for existing ones. I was still kind of hoping
that you would string together a much more open delivery platform for
indie labels and artists.

Someone else said :

> it's the beginning of the end of the open-source, open-format idea.

It doesn't have to be, let's hope it is not. I'd like openness at a
grander scale that between living room and slimserver.

I can understand wny Pandora is US only, the 'legal issues"

likely to be any fun. We can hope that they get
more countries on line as they mature.

username passwords are not strong enough if you care about
what you are doing, and the RIAA cares tons.
Adult sites are a totally different business model.

More importantly, the DRMs make getting licenses to stream the
music a lot easier to get from the Record Labels.

> - high quality
> 128kbit/s mp3 is just not the state of the art

Agreed, but again, it depends on the business model.
For a streaming site, bandwidth is the most expensive
part of the business. Consumers never see it, it tends
to be burried in their broadband ISP's SLA. But
commercial co-lo contracts are priced by bandwidth
in both peak and monthy numbers.

If people demand better quality, it will show up. But
lots of people are happy with 128kb/mp3, warts and all.

[slim] Re: Windows Media player not staying synced wiht stream

2006-02-09 Thread snarlydwarf

Windows Media Player (and Winamp and probably most other mp3 stream
players) buffer things. Ie, to make it more resiliant to network
hiccups, it will try to keep the next few seconds of the song: there is
a setting in Winamp to control this, I would assume WMP would have a
similar one.

A much better solution is to use Softsqueeze: it's under 'Help' on the
Slimserver web page. This is a Java emulator of the Squeezebox. It
doesn't use the 'stream.mp3' method, but uses the same protocols that a
real squeezebox uses.

It does buffer (it has to ... there's nothing wrong with buffering
since it does protect against short network problems), but it also
recognizes the SlimProto, "Hey, I changed tracks, throw away your
buffer and switch to this."

The redraw obviously got much faster. If other windows are moved above
Moose, this looks pretty ok now.
However when moving the Moose window it still feels a little jerky and
sluggish. As if it was completely redrawn at certain times while moving
and this would hinder Windows from moving the window for some tenth of a

What software do you use to get the DTS files from DVD? DVD Decrypter?
I know it can demux to ac3 files, haven't tried with a DTS DVD.

For SACD, you'd need a soundcard that can digitize 6 analog streams,
then something to encode to DTS (probably SurCode DVD-DTS).

I'm ripping DTS CDs using EAC --> WAV. Encode to FLAC, and they play
prfectly through the SB3. Of course you have to have it hooked to a
DTS decoder, and must disable the digital volume control (or leave it
on 40).

[slim] Re: NY times/ Pandora

2006-02-09 Thread Kevin O. Lepard
Pandora works well with pop and more better known artists but the
indie artists, abstract, experimental, and a plethora of genres not
heard of get left out

I imagine it's like any business. You have to pick the low-hanging
fruit first if you don't want to starve. I'd be surprised if they
don't want and plan to expand with time.

To ease your buyer's remorse ... I think Slim only has Platinum SB2s
left for sale.
