Re: [slim] Is SB3 robust as a product?

2006-05-01 Thread Peter
I'm not an industrial designer but I always thought that the attached
wal-wart and the thick RCA cords running from the back were a dead give
away as far as portability goes.

I remember very clearly the two times that my Nokia 9210's display died
after just a one meter drop. I agree that that's a bad thing for a
portable device, but really, the SB3 isn't portable. It would be nice it
it were more sturdy though, there's always a risk that it will fall off
a table or something...

Peter

I may break things but I also design them, I argue if you haven't broken
something you can't tell how strong it is! An expensive approach I
know. As a designer and English contemporary of Jonathan Ive, of Apple
design notoriety, I can see the iPod influence in the design of the SB3.
 But there is the rub, the 'product semantics' of an iPod match its use;
it looks portable because it is portable.
I got into a habit of carrying my SB3 around. In the lounge for hifi,
in the bedroom for late night, in the workshop as background music. But
if you carry something you drop it, I did and the display gently hissed
away its gas and the display stopped working. The SB3 is small, looks
portable, has a nice leg at the back to carry it, is reminiscent of a
portable iPod, almost encourages carrying but, as I can confirm, it not
portable because it cannot survive the typical drop test that a portable
object like my cell phone has to. A drop of 4 feet onto carpet killed
 the display.
Sorry Slimpeople, I like the appearance of SB3 but it is unsuitable.
Either give it the semantics/feel of a fixed item, as the old SB1 (it
doe not have to look like a 70s alarm clock though) or accept that the
display is too fragile and revert to LCD (which would allow you to
knock £50 ($70!) off the price.

[slim] Re: Is SB3 robust as a product?

2006-05-01 Thread Mark Norton

I think the SB3 is amazingly well made for the price, good quality
mouldings, good display and if you take it apart, the quality of
construction is fine. The display is glass and of course it will break
if you drop it. I don't think anyone should seriously think of an SB3
as being a portable device. Besides your carrying handle is actually
a stand.

The secret is not to be to mean and only have one SB3. I have three for
the different locations I like to listen to music.

As for the iPod, there's a product which is clearly intended to be
portable yet fails completely to stand up to the wear and tear involved
in being so. You only have to look at the chrome back and it gets
scratched and the fronts are made of a very soft, scratch prone
plastic. So, if you're pointing an accusing finger at inappropriately
designed products, I would point it in Steve Job's direction, not
Sean's. And don't get me started on the lack of a user changeable
battery.

But that's not what your first posting was about: Sonos an open solution?

I know I am sure having a hard

That's easier with Sonos: the device is your computer. And it costs at

FWIW I am having this problem with the qnap and sb3 combo. I think in
my case I didn't leave the scan long enough. Some directorys are fine,
whilst others have a couple of tracks in at best that play, despite the
album being listed there. Its no biggy for me as I still have several
(hah!)cds to rip and transfer across, so will do a full rescan and
leave it on when I'm at work.

What would be nice (don't know if its possible)is for slim to include a
progress bar to let you know when the scan is complete.

Re: [slim] Re: How much longer for a really slim SlimServer?

2006-05-01 Thread Michael Herger

I would think the main thing holding this back is market forces.

Exactly. And it's not one market. We're talking about very different
markets:

- Simple silent: the NAS solution
- Cheap: the turn-my-PC-into-Slimserver solution
- Hifi: the I want a component sized slimserver solution
- Integrated: MeSue's very personal I want a Squeezebox boombox. solution

...only to name a few. All of them have been asked for many times before.
And all of them have pros and cons. You mentioned some of them yourself
(performance, noise, energy consumption, geekiness, money...).

When I was working on SlimCD and saw the interest in it (it has been
downloaded a few thousand times) I was thinking about extending it to be
the SlimLinux distribution, easily installed on any PC, possibly selling
it pre-installed on some silent, low power PC (mini itx). But I think
there's just no market for such a niche product, if you don't have other
products to sell in masses. SB imho is still a niche product. A Slimserver
hardware solution would be a niche product within a niche market. Paul is
selling NAS devices - selling a value added version with slimserver
installed is a plus compared to other NAS devices. But I'm sure hew
wouldn't sell that box if he didn't sell other NAS boxes, too.

I only see two possible solutions:

- Hifi or integrated: SD take the risk and sell a box for good money:
cheap just isn't an option if you have to earn money with little volume.
This will therefore be too expensive for most of us, and probably not as
open as you'd like.

- Cheap: The community creates some SlimLinux/SlimNAS distribution with an
easy installer, Samba and integrated web interface for PC based hardware.
That would be the open, cheap solution. But hey, somebody has to do this.
For free. Any volunteers? (Be warned: users want more than this. NFS will
be next. Why not add LinVDR?...)

[slim] Softsqueeze control via IR?

2006-05-01 Thread kyleki

I've used XMMS on my HTPC Linux box for quite a while now. I'm able to
control it via IR through an IRman serial device. I've even got my
Philips Pronto remote configured for it. It's nice being able to start
playing music in my media room from a single remote without needing a
separate SB.

I also like that I can synchronize (theoretically) my SB2 in the
bedroom with Softsqueeze in my media room. The biggest piece of
functionality missing is the IR control of Softsqueeze. I don't
necessarily like having to use the keyboard/mouse to control my music
playback on the computer. Many times I don't even have the display
turned on. I just want to listen to music.

Any chance something like this could be added? Perhaps the ability to
control Softsqueeze through an IRman device using the standard SB
remote? Anyone else feel this would be handy?

- Kyle

3 people have got one having used mine and I got my SB3 after visiting a
friend and seeing his SB2.

When someone gets to play with a Squeezebox they just fall in love with
it - one chap asked if he could use my PC to order one on the spot!

I think that the problem with trying to market SB to the masses is that
when you try to describe it to someone the response you usually get is
'So its like an iPod?' at which point I just give up.

It's the sort of product that you don't realise you need until you play

[slim] Re: Slimserver No Album No Artist

2006-05-01 Thread Scallywagfr78

I seem to have solved part of the problem by removing the lyrics from
the 7 problem files. Slimserver now recognises the files, puts them in
the right folder and reads them normally.
The other 50 files with lyrics in the same folder, showing under
Slimserver Song info, some Lyrics: eng some Lyrics: plus lots of
funny caracters, perform normally.
Analysed with MP3/Tag, the files with lyrics all show Unsychronised
lyric / text transcription and, under Frame content, show
unsupported binary data (in grey). It makes no difference whether
Slimserver shows, under Song info, Lyrics: eng or Lyrics: plus
funny caracters.
Alltogether, this leaves me with some files without lyrics
(regrettably) and some with showing either eng or funny caracters
(under Slimserver Song Info) all of them being read.
A related question: can Slimserver show lyrics on the server's screen?

[slim] Softsqueeze Crashing

2006-05-01 Thread MrGadget

Hi, I've been playing around with Slimserver and Softsqueeze to get an
idea of how it works before buying a SB3 and I have a problem.

I get occassional crashes and when windows reboots it says the
following:

the size of the \windows\temp\sqlite_X entry is not valid

What is causing this crash to occur?

I am running Slimserver 6.2.2 on a P3 PC with just under 0.5 Gb RAM. I
intend to use this PC as a dedicated music streamer to a SB3 but these
crashes don't inspire confidence in forking out the cash for the SB3.
Please give suggestions as to what the problem may be.

Thanks.

2006-05-01 Thread Mark Lanctot

The SB3 is clearly not meant to be a portable product!

Just because it looks like it is (I don't fully agree on this, but
anyway) doesn't mean it is.

Perhaps you're looking at it more from an industrial design standpoint,
but if you carried it around like that just to prove a point, well,
point proven. It's not a portable product, despite it being seemingly
designed like one.

I would not be willing to sacrifice the display, its best feature IMHO,
to accommodate portability which it isn't designed for in the first
place!

Sorry, but you are just redirecting the anger about yourself to someone

either the packaging or the slimdevices web site (you can prove me

This isn't a portable device. Period.
If I dropped my DVD player which has the same number of connections and
is only slightly heavier would I blame the manufacturer for not making
it sturdier because I want to carry it around? I don't think so.
The round edges and the faceplate remind you of an apple product? Well,
how about this: My computer display has round edges, an aluminium body
and two connections (it is even made by apple!). I have not yet felt
like carrying it around or dropping it.

Yes, I did revert to an earlier build of 6.2.2 as this is the only way
I can get anything to work again. I am fed up with the fact I have
wasted an hour of my life trying to install an upgrade with software
that is half missing in the package!

looks as though 6.3.0 since the 29th April has not had the slim.exe in

I agree...it is all in the test drive. I got a friend at the office to
go in on the 2 for $100 off deal. She wass a little unsure, but since
having it she loves it.

The video from the NY Times review that showed how Pandora worked was a
great example I have used to convince other people. Maybe Slimdevices
needs to a put their own video up showing how the whole thing works so
more people get it.

[slim] Re: Slimserver No Album No Artist

2006-05-01 Thread snarlydwarf

Yes, it can show lyrics on the songinfo screen: it does for me on the
very few songs I've added lyrics to.

(I need to find a nice tool to take a txt file and cram it into a USLT
tag...)

Only thing I don't like about it is it would be nice if br's were
inserted at line breaks, but other than that it seems to work for me,
though I have very few files with lyrics embedded.

And it hasnt broken album art handling at all: I'm anal about my album
art and do a full wipe rescan reasonably often to make sure album art
is correct.

The few lyrics I have are in 2.3 tags and latin-1.. are yours 2.4
and/or utf? Though I don't know why that would break artwork...

[slim] Re: squeezeboxes flying off the shelves?

2006-05-01 Thread mrchrispy

In order to fly off the shelves the Squeezebox needs to be on the
shelves to begin with. There are are hardly any retailers selling it
right now. I live in NYC and wanted to pick one up at a bricks and
mortar store and couldn't find one. (Tekserve only had the Squeezebox
2). Internet sales are great, but for a consumer product you really
need to find a way to get in stores.

Squeezebox is a great product - I love mine, but it's really not
marketed to consumers at all. I can't imagine growth is exponential
because there's no awareness of the product in the marketplace (which
is why you all have such trouble explaining the product to your
friends). Ask 100 people at random on the street what a squeezebox is
and you'll get 100 blank stares. Ask 100 people what an iPod is and 30
will take one out of there pocket to show it off, 65 will offer an
explanation, and 5 will adjust their hearing aids and ask you to repeat
your question.

One of the reasons that iPods sell so well is that they've been
brilliantly and exhaustively marketed. If/when Apple ever gets serious
about competing with the squeezebox with something other than Front Row
they'll probably outsell Slim's lifetime numbers within a week or so
(assuming they build a halfway decent product). That's not a knock on
the people at Slim, just a testament to the power of advertising.

2006-05-01 Thread seanadams

mitip Wrote:
I may break things but I also design them, I argue if you haven't broken
something you can't tell how strong it is! An expensive approach I
know. As a designer and English contemporary of Jonathan Ive, of Apple
design notoriety, I can see the iPod influence in the design of the SB3.
 But there is the rub, the 'product semantics' of an iPod match its use;
it looks portable because it is portable.

For what it's worth, I just checked with our support guy and he only
recalls one other instance of a customer reporting a damaged display
from a fall. Considering it's a glass vacuum tube, they are pretty
robust. They're mounted on foam strips to absorb impact, and it really
takes a bad stroke of luck for them to break in a typical fall. We'll
consider a warning on the package - it's really not intended to be
carried around like a ipod.

Anyway please contact [EMAIL PROTECTED] and they can arrange for
repairs.

[slim] Flac To MP3 - C#/.NET Version

2006-05-01 Thread johnc_22

I needed a way to keep my FLAC and MP3 libraries in synch so I wrote a
quick and dirty application to do this. I'm not Perl fluent so it was
quicker for me to go this route, believe it or not. It reads the
Ogg-vorbis comments out of the FLAC file, decodes the FLAC file back to
WAV and them lames it to MP3 applying the comments. Most of the lame
settings are hard-coded right now and I don't plan on making it a hobby
to maintain the thing, but I'll be happy to hand off the source code to
someone who'd like to or anyone who's interested in customizing it for
their own needs.

There's certainly room for improvement as currently I read the entire
FLAC file into a byte array and then scan it for the comments - it
would certainly be more efficient to read the file only as much as
necessary to get the comments and then quit, but whatever, I just let
it run all night. I've converted about 65GB of FLAC to 12GB of MP3
(192kbps) so far but will have to free up some room on my drive before
I can go any further. It works well for what I needed and is
intelligent enough to ignore files and folders that it finds already
existing in the destination tree.

Yes, this is my first post but my Squeezebox (had it about a month) has
been so easy to use that I really haven't had any questions I couldn't
get answered by searching here.

My Squeezebox rocks - I truly love this device.

John

[slim] Accessing Slimserver via Squeezebox across internet

Hi,

Is there a way for my slimserver to be running on a remote network (for

I tested this out at work by opening up the appropriate ports on my
firewall at home and forwarding the ports to the computer running
slimserver. I used the softsqueeze app to test and it did work but my
upstream was not enough for my FLAC files so there was massive delay
and dropouts. I'm sure with MP3 files and a solid upstream cable or
DSL connection it would work just fine but you certainly want to think
about security concerns. I believe you can configure the slimserver to
only accept connections from certain IPs.

[slim] Re: Accessing Slimserver via Squeezebox across internet

2006-05-01 Thread azinck3

Yes, this is possible. It will, however, require some configuration on
your part. The simple but unsecure way is to forward ports 3483 and
9000 on your router to the box hosting slimserver.

This, however, leaves your server machine open to potential (but
unlikely) exploits. The more secure approach is to use SSH. You'd
have to set up SSH on your server machine, but since the squeezebox
hardware doesn't support SSH you'd also have to set up an SSH client on
your girlfriend's computer, configure it to forward all requests on
ports 3483 and 9000 to your remote server computer, then point your SB
at her machine.

So the idea is this:

SB - GF's computer - your remote server

ports 3483 and 9000 to your remote server computer, then point your SB

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Provided he restricts
incoming traffic on your router to his GF's IP address it is totally
unnecessary to use VPN or SSH tunneling for this kind of thing. IP
filters are impenetrable without attackers having cracked his (or her)
ISP first and then it's not just you who's in trouble. Tunneling is
alwyas a hassle and makes everything a lot less reliable. If your
routers support router-to-router LAN tunneling it's worth considering,
but else I'd forget it.

Common sense is requirement #1 in security.

No, the Squeezebox2 and 3 are almost hardware-identical and use the same
firmware.

There was code in some firmware releases to try to detect if it was a
v2 or v3 by MAC address, but it looks like it was dropped.

It's just cosmetic, you won't experience any issues because of this.

I appreciate this feedback and I trust you are correct. Despite being
a web programmer in my daily life, I know relatively little about the
various attacks that can be mounted so wanted to err on the side of
caution in any advice I might give. There seem to be a lot of
old-wives tales out there in the network security world, and I have
been somewhat baffled by the degrees to which some people will go to
secure (I use quotes because sometimes the effectiveness of the
approach seems questionable) their data. I figure I'm more likely to
have my identity stolen by handing my credit card to the waitress at a
restaurant than I am by way of having my slimserver hacked. But to
each his own.

For me, between not having anything of great value/secrecy on my
personal computer and the relative obscurity of slimserver, I've felt
no qualms simply using IP filtering. I'm glad to know this is not only
convenient, but safe.

You shouldn't have anything to worry about. Make sure you check from a

The Server Response Time graph is the one that matters - your results

be worth zeroing the counters and watching this to see. However server

I didn't watch the squeezebox during the 45 minutes of using NetTest so
I'm not sure whether the instantaneous value dropped. If I retest it

Unfortunately I continue to have dropouts and stops. When I retest,
server responsiveness levels are mostly strong with some longer times
similar to the one I posted. Any other suggestions?

Came across this post as I was looking for a way to get Capital FM
streaming via my Slimp3 and/or SB3. I've only been testing with the
Slim (as it's closest to me at the moment), but can't quite seem to get
it working. The URL I've been using is:

http://audio3.musicradio.com/capitalsuperhi

When I try to tune this in, I get 'WMA Convert error - check file
types' displayed on the Slim.

Is this an issue particular to the slim, or do I have something
configured incorrectly? I was under the impression it's possible to
transcode radio stations, so if transcoding to MP3 anyway I can't see
why it wouldn't work on the Slim. If I need to change convert.conf,
can anyone offer any pointers?

Thanks,

Tom

I play one on the weekends.

For those who are interested, this page :
http://www.securityfocus.com/infocus/1674 gives a nice overview of IP
spoofing. Having some form of control of any specific ISP or network
 is certainly not a pre-requisite.

In practice all ISP routers have (or should very much have)
ingres/egress filtering. This means that incoming packets with an inside
source address and outgoing packets with an inside source address are
blocked omn the routers. This makes spoofing very hard on the attacker,
because the attacker should be able to transmit packets with a source
address outside of his own range (that's the point). So to be able to
send IP packet with a forged source address is already quite hard.

If you manage to do this anyway, you are able to send spoofed IP
packets, spoofed UDP packets to your victim. Just don't expect a reply,
because the reply packets will be returned to the spoofed address over
which you have no control unless you are able to reprogram the routers
on the way which is about as hard as getting on the ISP's 'lan'. It is
possible to use spoofed UDP packets to attack (trigger a buffer
overflow) because the UDP packets are passed on by the TCP stack to the
server software. A malformed UDP packet with a spoofed IP address could
be used to attack a DNS server via a buffer overflow.

As I see it, in the case of a connection oriented protocol like TCP
(which is what we're talking about here) it is impossible to gain access
to the application (slimserver) by just sending packets and ignoring the
replies. For the TCP connection to work the handshake must be completed.
AFAIK there's no way around this. Session hijacking as described in the
article is only possible when you're on the same subnet or somewhere in
the data path. Spoofed TCP setup packets are very popular in DOS attacks
of course, but they work without replies.

Then if (and I don't think that's possible) you get access to
slimserver, you'd have to be able to gain access to the system beyond
slimserver. This is usually done through buffer overflows, which, in the
case of a Perl application are rather unlikely IMO. Perl (as a language)
has dynamic memory allocation, so there'd have to be a bug in the Perl
runtime itself. It's possible I guess...

And of course, we'd need a hacker. One that not only knows you're
running slimserver but also knows on what port (ok, he could just try
all of them) and what IP addresses you have given access. And he'd need
a motive.

What I would agree with, however, is that IP spoofing is hard, and to
be quite honest the risk of someone taking the trouble to attack your
slimserver is pretty remote. I'd still use a tunnel though, as I don't
find them hard to setup and it's better to be safe than sorry.

I'd like to hear how a spoofing attack against a filtered router TCP
port could work, if you know of a way.

If you do, I'll be glad to open up a port on my router, supply you with
all the necessary info and wait for you to take over control of my
living room Squeezebox. I'll give a Squeezebox to the first person who
manages to do that ;)

Peter

I know with different OS and slimserver versions, this isn't a great

that? That seems like strange behavior for something that is physically
static, but I'm totally uninformed on the subject.

Is it possible to have interference in a wired connection? I have 2
sets of speaker wire along with the cat5 in the same box. Could that be
a problem?

FYI: I updated the other post. My current router is a DLink DI-604.

[slim] Re: Mac Slimserver more resource hungry than Windows?

2006-05-01 Thread trebejo

I was able to get rid of a similar problem by deleting some cache files.
Weird little bug.

The files in question were

~/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.cache
~/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.searchindexcache

[slim] Re: How much longer for a really slim SlimServer?

2006-05-01 Thread nicketynick

JJZolx Wrote:
I think I've said in the past that someone would do well selling turnkey
Slim Server machines. I think they still would, but it's a small market
and one which is obviously broken up into people who want different
 things from their server.

First off, you can run Slim Server with pretty good success on your
everyday desktop system. As Slim Server evolves, though, I think this
will be less and less true. This is going to make it increasingly
desirable for people to have a dedicated server.

 Some of the varying goals:

  - Cheap. Just something to get Slim Server off of the desktop
   system.
  - Low power use. For the penny pinchers, environmentalists, and
those people unfortunate enough to live where electricity is very
   expensive.
  - Low noise. For folks that insist on the server being located in
the listening room. Or those that can't tolerate system noise when
the server is located in an office or a bedroom.
  - High performance. Feeding many Squeezeboxes, or with several
users using the web interface, or desiring very fast library scans
   of large music libraries.
  - Small size. Again, for those locating the server in the music
room, living in small apartments, or wanting something they can
   stash in a nook somewhere.
  - Storage capacity. Able to house multiple hard drives for large
   libraries and future expansion needs.
  - Robustness. RAID disk subsystems, redundant PSUs, and other
trappings of a 'real' 24x7 server.

Some of the conflicts here should be obvious. A server with RAID5
isn't likely to be cheap. If you want capacity and the ability
house, say, five hard drives, it isn't going to be small, nor is it
likely to be quiet due to cooling needs.

I like your idea of a web management interface, but see some of this
as features that should eventually make it into Slim Server itself.
Particularly the ability to install and manage plugins from the web
 UI.

You've hit the nail on the head with the first five bullets, and I
think they're all compatible. But I think you're a little off the mark
when it comes to storage requirements. Storage is evolving so quickly,
and becoming increasingly cheaper as we go - I don't see that it should
be integrated into the 'server' at all - the server should just have the
appropriate interfaces. USB2 is doing a good job right now - how much
longer until we have 100 GB of 'flash' memory (or whatever they come up
with next) through an even faster interface? Redundant systems will be a
simple matter of plugging into a bunch of USB slots and pressing the
button!
I'm glad you like the web management interface idea. As much as I'd
like to become proficient in Linux (and perl for that matter), I just
don't have the time, so it would be nice to have something that I can
configure in a manner similar to the router without having to know all
the Linux stuff that's making it happen!

[slim] Re: Buffer drained, pausing playback

2006-05-01 Thread snarlydwarf

It is possible for a wired connection to show that sort of problem if
the wiring is faulty. If it gets too near a 120vac circuit for too
long, inductunce can be a problem (not always from the 120vac itself,
that's a nice 60hz hum.. but things with motors and such can grind up
an electric signal well).

Normally this isn't a problem: it's why there are rules about twisted
pair: for each side of the ethernet there is a + and a - (ie, TX+/TX-
and RX+/RX-) providing a balance.. when the + is driven high, the - is
pulled low, which should make the signal very resistant to noise. (A
T1 data circuit can run for -miles- like this without a problem, moving
1.5Mbps error free.)

But if the circuit is wired 'wrong' by mispairing the wires: it will
actually be -more- susceptible to noise induction.

My desk at work at one point was wired by a phone guy who wired it like
this. It worked fine and dandy.. unless I started moving a lot of data,
then the wire would start generating noise with itself.

Do you have a long cable to try for a day to see if that fixes the
problem? If it does you know where to look: it may be as simple as
rewiring the connectors at the wall plate.

always worth asking - was it a telecom guy who put the ethernet cables
in the wall? Cat 5 is pretty simple to wire, but you need to know the
rules. There are some rules about not pulling it hard around sharp
corners, etc. Some of those can break a cable and cause instabilities.

Well it wasn't the telecom guy who installed it (shuffling feet,
looking at the ground) it was... me. I don't remember being
particularly rough with it, but I can't say I didn't do something I
shouldn't have.

I've moved the squeezebox next to the computer and hooked up some
powered speakers to it. I'll see if my problem is replicated with this
setup. Assuming the d***ass who installed the cat5 did it wrong, would
you have a link to some good installing advice so it can be done
properly next time? I think I'll start with making sure the connectors
at each end are ok per snarlydwarf's post above, but if I have to
rewire, I may need some pointers.

Thanks for the advice everyone. It is nice to feel like I'm narrowing
down the problem, even if I caused it.

I can't think of a way for Slimserver or Softsqueeze to cause it --
 both are
written in high-level languages with no access to the hardware, and you
 need
direct driver access to crash a box. What Java sound plugin are you
 using,
 maybe it's got hardware access?
