Re: [slim] Is SB3 robust as a product?
I'm not an industrial designer but I always thought that the attached wal-wart and the thick RCA cords running from the back were a dead give away as far as portability goes. I remember very clearly the two times that my Nokia 9210's display died after just a one meter drop. I agree that that's a bad thing for a portable device, but really, the SB3 isn't portable. It would be nice it it were more sturdy though, there's always a risk that it will fall off a table or something... Regards, Peter On Sun, 30 Apr 2006 23:58:04 -0700, mitip [EMAIL PROTECTED] said: I may break things but I also design them, I argue if you haven't broken something you can't tell how strong it is! An expensive approach I know. As a designer and English contemporary of Jonathan Ive, of Apple design notoriety, I can see the iPod influence in the design of the SB3. But there is the rub, the 'product semantics' of an iPod match its use; it looks portable because it is portable. I got into a habit of carrying my SB3 around. In the lounge for hifi, in the bedroom for late night, in the workshop as background music. But if you carry something you drop it, I did and the display gently hissed away its gas and the display stopped working. The SB3 is small, looks portable, has a nice leg at the back to carry it, is reminiscent of a portable iPod, almost encourages carrying but, as I can confirm, it not portable because it cannot survive the typical drop test that a portable object like my cell phone has to. A drop of 4 feet onto carpet killed the display. Sorry Slimpeople, I like the appearance of SB3 but it is unsuitable. Either give it the semantics/feel of a fixed item, as the old SB1 (it doe not have to look like a 70s alarm clock though) or accept that the display is too fragile and revert to LCD (which would allow you to knock £50 ($70!) off the price. -- mitip mitip's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5260 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=23509 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: Is SB3 robust as a product?
I think the SB3 is amazingly well made for the price, good quality mouldings, good display and if you take it apart, the quality of construction is fine. The display is glass and of course it will break if you drop it. I don't think anyone should seriously think of an SB3 as being a portable device. Besides your carrying handle is actually a stand. The secret is not to be to mean and only have one SB3. I have three for the different locations I like to listen to music. As for the iPod, there's a product which is clearly intended to be portable yet fails completely to stand up to the wear and tear involved in being so. You only have to look at the chrome back and it gets scratched and the fronts are made of a very soft, scratch prone plastic. So, if you're pointing an accusing finger at inappropriately designed products, I would point it in Steve Job's direction, not Sean's. And don't get me started on the lack of a user changeable battery. -- Mark Norton Mark Norton's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4722 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=23509 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Re: How much longer for a really slim SlimServer?
I would think the main thing holding this back is market forces. Exactly. And it's not one market. We're talking about very different markets: - Simple silent: the NAS solution - Cheap: the turn-my-PC-into-Slimserver solution - Hifi: the I want a component sized slimserver solution - Integrated: MeSue's very personal I want a Squeezebox boombox. solution ...only to name a few. All of them have been asked for many times before. And all of them have pros and cons. You mentioned some of them yourself (performance, noise, energy consumption, geekiness, money...). When I was working on SlimCD and saw the interest in it (it has been downloaded a few thousand times) I was thinking about extending it to be the SlimLinux distribution, easily installed on any PC, possibly selling it pre-installed on some silent, low power PC (mini itx). But I think there's just no market for such a niche product, if you don't have other products to sell in masses. SB imho is still a niche product. A Slimserver hardware solution would be a niche product within a niche market. Paul is selling NAS devices - selling a value added version with slimserver installed is a plus compared to other NAS devices. But I'm sure hew wouldn't sell that box if he didn't sell other NAS boxes, too. I only see two possible solutions: - Hifi or integrated: SD take the risk and sell a box for good money: cheap just isn't an option if you have to earn money with little volume. This will therefore be too expensive for most of us, and probably not as open as you'd like. - Cheap: The community creates some SlimLinux/SlimNAS distribution with an easy installer, Samba and integrated web interface for PC based hardware. That would be the open, cheap solution. But hey, somebody has to do this. For free. Any volunteers? (Be warned: users want more than this. NFS will be next. Why not add LinVDR?...) -- Michael --- Help translate SlimServer by using the SlimString Translation Helper (http://www.herger.net/slim/) ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Softsqueeze control via IR?
I've used XMMS on my HTPC Linux box for quite a while now. I'm able to control it via IR through an IRman serial device. I've even got my Philips Pronto remote configured for it. It's nice being able to start playing music in my media room from a single remote without needing a separate SB. I also like that I can synchronize (theoretically) my SB2 in the bedroom with Softsqueeze in my media room. The biggest piece of functionality missing is the IR control of Softsqueeze. I don't necessarily like having to use the keyboard/mouse to control my music playback on the computer. Many times I don't even have the display turned on. I just want to listen to music. Any chance something like this could be added? Perhaps the ability to control Softsqueeze through an IRman device using the standard SB remote? I seem to have solved part of the problem by removing the lyrics from the 7 problem files. Slimserver now recognises the files, puts them in the right folder and reads them normally. The other 50 files with lyrics in the same folder, showing under Slimserver Song info, some Lyrics: eng some Lyrics: plus lots of funny caracters, perform normally. Analysed with MP3/Tag, the files with lyrics all show Unsychronised lyric / text transcription and, under Frame content, show unsupported binary data (in grey). It makes no difference whether Slimserver shows, under Song info, Lyrics: eng or Lyrics: plus funny caracters. Alltogether, this leaves me with some files without lyrics (regrettably) and some with showing either eng or funny caracters (under Slimserver Song Info) all of them being read. The SB3 is clearly not meant to be a portable product! Just because it looks like it is (I don't fully agree on this, but anyway) doesn't mean it is. Sorry, but you are just redirecting the anger about yourself to someone else. [slim] Re: squeezeboxes flying off the shelves?
In order to fly off the shelves the Squeezebox needs to be on the shelves to begin with. There are are hardly any retailers selling it right now. I live in NYC and wanted to pick one up at a bricks and mortar store and couldn't find one. (Tekserve only had the Squeezebox 2). Internet sales are great, but for a consumer product you really need to find a way to get in stores. Squeezebox is a great product - I love mine, but it's really not marketed to consumers at all. I can't imagine growth is exponential because there's no awareness of the product in the marketplace (which is why you all have such trouble explaining the product to your friends). Ask 100 people at random on the street what a squeezebox is and you'll get 100 blank stares. Ask 100 people what an iPod is and 30 will take one out of there pocket to show it off, 65 will offer an explanation, and 5 will adjust their hearing aids and ask you to repeat your question. One of the reasons that iPods sell so well is that they've been brilliantly and exhaustively marketed. If/when Apple ever gets serious about competing with the squeezebox with something other than Front Row they'll probably outsell Slim's lifetime numbers within a week or so (assuming they build a halfway decent product). mitip Wrote: I may break things but I also design them, I argue if you haven't broken something you can't tell how strong it is! For what it's worth, I just checked with our support guy and he only recalls one other instance of a customer reporting a damaged display from a fall. Considering it's a glass vacuum tube, they are pretty robust. They're mounted on foam strips to absorb impact, and it really takes a bad stroke of luck for them to break in a typical fall. We'll consider a warning on the package - it's really not intended to be carried around like a ipod. [slim] Flac To MP3 - C#/.NET Version
I needed a way to keep my FLAC and MP3 libraries in synch so I wrote a quick and dirty application to do this. I'm not Perl fluent so it was quicker for me to go this route, believe it or not. It reads the Ogg-vorbis comments out of the FLAC file, decodes the FLAC file back to WAV and them lames it to MP3 applying the comments. Most of the lame settings are hard-coded right now and I don't plan on making it a hobby to maintain the thing, but I'll be happy to hand off the source code to someone who'd like to or anyone who's interested in customizing it for their own needs. There's certainly room for improvement as currently I read the entire FLAC file into a byte array and then scan it for the comments - it would certainly be more efficient to read the file only as much as necessary to get the comments and then quit, but whatever, I just let it run all night. I've converted about 65GB of FLAC to 12GB of MP3 (192kbps) so far but will have to free up some room on my drive before I can go any further. It works well for what I needed and is intelligent enough to ignore files and folders that it finds already existing in the destination tree. Yes, this is my first post but my Squeezebox (had it about a month) has been so easy to use that I really haven't had any questions I couldn't get answered by searching here. I used the softsqueeze app to test and it did work but my upstream was not enough for my FLAC files so there was massive delay and dropouts. Yes, this is possible. It will, however, require some configuration on your part. The simple but unsecure way is to forward ports 3483 and 9000 on your router to the box hosting slimserver. This, however, leaves your server machine open to potential (but unlikely) exploits. The more secure approach is to use SSH. You'd have to set up SSH on your server machine, but since the squeezebox hardware doesn't support SSH you'd also have to set up an SSH client on your girlfriend's computer, configure it to forward all requests on ports 3483 and 9000 to your remote server computer, then point your SB at her machine. Came across this post as I was looking for a way to get Capital FM streaming via my Slimp3 and/or SB3. I've only been testing with the Slim (as it's closest to me at the moment), but can't quite seem to get it working. The URL I've been using is: http://audio3.musicradio.com/capitalsuperhi When I try to tune this in, I get 'WMA Convert error - check file types' displayed on the Slim. Is this an issue particular to the slim, or do I have something configured incorrectly? I was under the impression it's possible to transcode radio stations, so if transcoding to MP3 anyway I can't see why it wouldn't work on the Slim. Re: [slim] Re: Accessing Slimserver via Squeezebox across internet
On Mon, 1 May 2006 12:50:04 -0700, radish [EMAIL PROTECTED] said: peter Wrote: IP filters are impenetrable without attackers having cracked his (or her) ISP first and then it's not just you who's in trouble. Could you explain this? I've seen you state it a few times in other threads, and I'm not sure I believe it. I'm not a security expert, but I play one on the weekends. For those who are interested, this page : http://www.securityfocus.com/infocus/1674 gives a nice overview of IP spoofing. Having some form of control of any specific ISP or network is certainly not a pre-requisite. In practice all ISP routers have (or should very much have) ingres/egress filtering. This means that incoming packets with an inside source address and outgoing packets with an inside source address are blocked omn the routers. This makes spoofing very hard on the attacker, because the attacker should be able to transmit packets with a source address outside of his own range (that's the point). So to be able to send IP packet with a forged source address is already quite hard. If you manage to do this anyway, you are able to send spoofed IP packets, spoofed UDP packets to your victim. Just don't expect a reply, because the reply packets will be returned to the spoofed address over which you have no control unless you are able to reprogram the routers on the way which is about as hard as getting on the ISP's 'lan'. It is possible to use spoofed UDP packets to attack (trigger a buffer overflow) because the UDP packets are passed on by the TCP stack to the server software. A malformed UDP packet with a spoofed IP address could be used to attack a DNS server via a buffer overflow. As I see it, in the case of a connection oriented protocol like TCP (which is what we're talking about here) it is impossible to gain access to the application (slimserver) by just sending packets and ignoring the replies. For the TCP connection to work the handshake must be completed. AFAIK there's no way around this. Session hijacking as described in the article is only possible when you're on the same subnet or somewhere in the data path. Spoofed TCP setup packets are very popular in DOS attacks of course, but they work without replies. Then if (and I don't think that's possible) you get access to slimserver, you'd have to be able to gain access to the system beyond slimserver. This is usually done through buffer overflows, which, in the case of a Perl application are rather unlikely IMO. Perl (as a language) has dynamic memory allocation, so there'd have to be a bug in the Perl runtime itself. It's possible I guess... And of course, we'd need a hacker. One that not only knows you're running slimserver but also knows on what port (ok, he could just try all of them) and what IP addresses you have given access. And he'd need a motive. What I would agree with, however, is that IP spoofing is hard, and to be quite honest the risk of someone taking the trouble to attack your slimserver is pretty remote. I'd still use a tunnel though, as I don't find them hard to setup and it's better to be safe than sorry. I'd like to hear how a spoofing attack against a filtered router TCP port could work, if you know of a way. If you do, I'll be glad to open up a port on my router, supply you with all the necessary info and wait for you to take over control of my living room Squeezebox. I'll give a Squeezebox to the first person who manages to do that ;) Regards, Peter ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I think they still would, but it's a small market and one which is obviously broken up into people who want different things from their server. First off, you can run Slim Server with pretty good success on your everyday desktop system. As Slim Server evolves, though, I think this will be less and less true. This is going to make it increasingly desirable for people to have a dedicated server. Some of the varying goals: - Cheap. Just something to get Slim Server off of the desktop system. - Low power use. For the penny pinchers, environmentalists, and those people unfortunate enough to live where electricity is very expensive. - Low noise. For folks that insist on the server being located in the listening room. Or those that can't tolerate system noise when the server is located in an office or a bedroom. - High performance. Feeding many Squeezeboxes, or with several users using the web interface, or desiring very fast library scans of large music libraries. - Small size. Again, for those locating the server in the music room, living in small apartments, or wanting something they can stash in a nook somewhere. - Storage capacity. Able to house multiple hard drives for large libraries and future expansion needs. - Robustness. RAID disk subsystems, redundant PSUs, and other trappings of a 'real' 24x7 server. Some of the conflicts here should be obvious. A server with RAID5 isn't likely to be cheap. If you want capacity and the ability house, say, five hard drives, it isn't going to be small, nor is it likely to be quiet due to cooling needs. I like your idea of a web management interface, but see some of this as features that should eventually make it into Slim Server itself. Particularly the ability to install and manage plugins from the web UI. You've hit the nail on the head with the first five bullets, and I think they're all compatible. But I think you're a little off the mark when it comes to storage requirements. Storage is evolving so quickly, and becoming increasingly cheaper as we go - I don't see that it should be integrated into the 'server' at all - the server should just have the appropriate interfaces. USB2 is doing a good job right now - how much longer until we have 100 GB of 'flash' memory (or whatever they come up with next) through an even faster interface? Redundant systems will be a simple matter of plugging into a bunch of USB slots and pressing the button! I'm glad you like the web management interface idea. [slim] Re: Buffer drained, pausing playback
It is possible for a wired connection to show that sort of problem if the wiring is faulty. If it gets too near a 120vac circuit for too long, inductunce can be a problem (not always from the 120vac itself, that's a nice 60hz hum.. but things with motors and such can grind up an electric signal well). Normally this isn't a problem: it's why there are rules about twisted pair: for each side of the ethernet there is a + and a - (ie, TX+/TX- and RX+/RX-) providing a balance.. when the + is driven high, the - is pulled low, which should make the signal very resistant to noise. (A T1 data circuit can run for -miles- like this without a problem, moving 1.5Mbps error free.) But if the circuit is wired 'wrong' by mispairing the wires: it will actually be -more- susceptible to noise induction. My desk at work at one point was wired by a phone guy who wired it like this. It worked fine and dandy.. unless I started moving a lot of data, then the wire would start generating noise with itself. Do you have a long cable to try for a day to see if that fixes the problem? If it does you know where to look: it may be as simple as rewiring the connectors at the wall plate. -- snarlydwarf snarlydwarf's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1179 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=20783 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
