[slim] Re: First sec of song getting clipped off

2006-05-06 Thread cepheid

As reported in this thread, I'm fairly certain
it's the beginning of tracks. Yes, it occurs only with FLAC... in my
case, it's when ALAC is transcoded to FLAC before streaming to the SB.

It's rather annoying and also screws up gapless playback... hopefully
it will be fixed soon.

[slim] Re: SB2 won't play

2006-05-06 Thread ceejay

Well, lets start with a couple of basics. Can you confirm your operating
system (Windows XP??) and slimserver version (6.2.2 ??) ?

What format files are you playing? (FLAC, MP3...)

Is iTunes involved at all?

Next, have you tried using softsqueeze instead of your SB2? If not, now
might be a good time to try it out, just to prove that Slimserver is
running ok and there aren't any problems with it getting hold of the
music etc.

Finally, what exactly happens here... you're browsing your library ok,
you find an album, click "play" and... what?

Post back with some answers and we'll get you going...

[slim] SB2 won't play

2006-05-06 Thread Bubba

Please excuse me, as I'm not well versed in the technical lingo.

This AM, my Slim Server would not open. Just kept saying "Opening Slim
Devices", but it stalled. Eventually, I downloaded the 6.3.3 version.
Now, it will open, it will populate the library, I can browse and
select songs with the remote or on the network computer, but it will
not play. When I check the server performance, everything seems to be
working except it says that nothing is streaming to the SB2.

Going on hour 12 of this escapade, so someone, please help a layman.

Thank you.

[slim] Re: SlimServer buffer settings

2006-05-06 Thread azinck3

I reenter this thread with some trepidation, recognizing the expertise
of some of the other people who are helping you. That being said, I
think the difference you're seeing between the behavior of your icecast
stream and slimserver's stream.mp3 can be chalked up to stream.mp3 not
being a true "stream", but rather a progressive download. I'll
reiterate what I said earlier: I'm pretty sure that when using
stream.mp3, the data is delivered to your audio client as quickly as
possible. As far as your audio client is concerned, you're simply
downloading an mp3 and listening to it as you download. Icecast, on
the other hand, uses a proper streaming protocol and the data is
delivered in "real-time".

I'm afraid I don't have enough knowledge of the technical differences
between how the two delivery methods are actually implemented to go
beyond that basic, fairly abstract explanation.

Here's a thread that references the fact that slimserver uses
progressive download rather than true streaming for its stream.mp3:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=14658

and if you're not familiar with the distinction here's a whitepaper
from microsoft:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/compare/webservvstreamserv.aspx

Linux is already in the ROM. You'd put Perl and SlimServer on the

Although I'm beginning to think it's more of a Rube Goldberg device.

if the linkstation is dramatically different, you could still put perl,

[slim] Help with SlimServer Error "403 Forbidden: status.html"

2006-05-06 Thread ramiles

When I try to change volume I get the error screen with the following:

"In order to request this URL from a Bookmark/Favorite, or some means
other than following a link from the SlimServer web interface, you will
need to use a URL with a \"cauth\" security parameter. If you received
this error when following a link from the SlimServer web interface, you
will want to make sure your web browser software (including proxy
servers and spyware/privacy software) is allowing \"Referer\" headers
to be sent. Below is the appropriate URL for the URL you attempted."

I researched and found this post:

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=1539

Help please - any ideas greatly appreciated:

1) I don't understand why cross-site request forgery (csrf)should be
considered an issue with a slimserver on a home network, and why
slimserver software should consider it.
2) There was no simple suggestion offered for a setting or patch for my

3) I don't get this error on my Nokia 770
4) Running the beta slimserver with the Nokia skin

If you mean the softsqueeze buffer, I don't think it's 128k. That's the
_audio_ buffer, which is used on the output side. I don't know how big
the network buffer is but I'd guess the same size as an SB2/3, which is
pretty big.

I discussed this already. By hitting play on the client you're forcing
a reconnect, flushing all the buffers. The server has nothing to do
with it.

I've added an upgrade script (svn 7321) that will run on startup and
set the new screensaverDateFormat and screensaverTimeFormat to the
users' current pref for timeFormat and longdateFormat. This presets
the new pref so that the user will not see any change unless s/he
specifically decides to do so. This will only work for those who have
not yet run into this problem.

If I did my figuring right, this means you have roughly .6 ohms of
resistance in that wire. That seems like a lot. How long is that wire?

IIRC, only 4 of the 8 wires in an ethernet cable are used, so you could
use the other 4 instead of only using 2, and you'd drop your voltage
drop roughly in half.

But I have to say this isn't a really good idea. Having a resistor in
series with your power supply is going to introduce noise in your audio
out. At the very least, you should probably be putting some sort of
electrolytic capacitor at the SB end (although I seem to recall, on
pictures of the SB circuit board, that there is a fair sized one on the
input side).

looks like it is the result of the "date and time screensaver settings".
in server settings->plugins

my guess is that they are now improperly reflecting teh "current"

changing it back seems to clear up the problem

This would be due to the client making a new request. This flushes the
buffer and kicks in with the new stream.
otherwise, it is all part of the same old stream and you have to sort
out the mingling of slimserver and client-side buffering. Winamp can
buffer several minues of streamed audio if set to do so. I used to do
this way back when I would play my home music via slimserver when
visiting the UK. It needed the huge buffer to get past the long

I know there is the flac to MP3 script, which will do it by directory,
but what I want is to do it by playlist.

Make some playlists in SlimServer, like "Highway" "Ski" "Podcasts",

Each Squeezebox can *either* connect to the SlimServer *or* to the

can't.

You can also have a web radio in your favorites (in the slimserver),

Hope this helps.

Good news, I found the culprit! I'm using a Motorola Surfboard900 as my
wireless cable modem and the SB2 would drop after about 5-15 minutes,
onle when WPA was enabled. The Motorola Surfboard is also connected to
a Netgear 8 port switch which connects my wife's Mac G4, a Vonage VOIP
router and SNAP server for backup. I disconnected all devices from the
switch and the SB3 stayed connected for an hour. Great. So then I
started to connect each device back into the switch one at a time.

Ultimately I found that the SB3 would disconnect only when the Snap
Server was connected to the LAN. That's pretty bizarre, but why? Well,
I went into the admin control panel for the Snap and found that I had
NetBIOS enabled over TCP/IP and NetBEUI. I changed the setting so that
it was enabled only over TCP/IP, rebooted the Snap and the SB3 and
voila the SB3 stayed connected all night.

So, it seems that this has something to do with NetBIOS over NetBUI
coming from the Snap server. Any ideas? I would assume that this
setting causes the Snap to broacast something to all nodes on the LAN
and is causing the SB to drop the connection.

Anyway, if you are having this disconnect problem, look for any devices
on your LAN that are using NetBIOS enabled over NetBEUI

[slim] Re: How to always start playlists at track 1?

2006-05-06 Thread dborn

I found a way to get what I want, I just remove the first line
(CURTRACK...) in the file and slimserver doesn't add it back and the
playlist always starts at track #1.

[slim] Music collection cataloguer

2006-05-06 Thread Kyle

A good program to scan and list music files has been discussed here many
times. A new one has been developed and is worth a try, IMHO. See this
link: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=23671.
EDIT: Oh, yeah: it's free.

[slim] Re: SB2 Power Supply Compatible with SB3?

2006-05-06 Thread Michaelwagner

The very first SLiMP3s used an IOMEGA branded power supply.

The later ones use the same unifive power supply as all the subsequent
SBs.

[slim] Plays for Sure/Janus/WMP10/Subscription Music

2006-05-06 Thread fairyliquidizer

I know many or most of the regulars here are anti-DRM, and to some
extent I agree. However I think their is a growing market for
Microsoft Subscription DRM streaming. e.g. Napster, Yahoo Music
Unlimited.

This may be a difficult problem for slimserver, although perhaps
slimserver doesn't need to intervene.

Are there any plans to target this or other DRM systems?

I am mainly a CDDA Buyer, but have some Fairplay and use Napster as a
music discovery/sampling tool. It also gives me a fix when I decide I
must hear a track now and I don't own it.

Thanks,
Fairy

[slim] First sec of song getting clipped off

2006-05-06 Thread 4mula1

After upgrading to SS 6.2.2 I've noticed that when I manually advance to
the next song it will sometimes not play the first second or so of the
track. I don't remember this with 6.2.1 but recently I have been
converting my collection from mp3/ogg to flac. So far this issue only
seems to occur with flac tracks. SB3/FW48 connectied wirelessly to a
Linksys WAP54g access point. Anybody else having this issue?

Greg - thks for confirming that I am not alone with this problem.

To be honest as a I had a 'workaround' (using the 2600 for the dsl and
the 2800vg for wireless) I had not pursued draytek for help..but
hearing you have the same symptoms I have just submitted a problem to
UK Draytek Support.

I'll keep you posted !
Just now I'm going to try the 2.6.4.2 early release draytek firmware.

[slim] Re: RSS Plugin "Failed to retrieve RSS feed"

2006-05-06 Thread willem

Hi, I'm having the same problem with a few RSS feeds.
Currently I run 6.2.2 but have tried a 6.5 nightly as well on my server
and another PC. All running the Windows version.

A few RSS feeds from a local newspaper do not work anymore with my SB3
but did work some months ago.The url:
http://volkskrant.nl/rss/laatstenieuws.rss (Latest headlines in Dutch)
I get the following message: Failed to retrieve RSS feed
Other RSS feeds do work with my SB3 and if I use the above RSS feed in
Firefox Sage it does work as expected.

The strange thing is that it used to work in the past but can't
remember at which level id broke.
It seems that SlimServer got more picky parsing URL's (?).

Can anyone verify if the above feed does work with another SB? Is this
a Slimserver bug?

Thanks!
Willem Oepkes
