Imagine a portable, battery powered, squeezebox with a decent built in
headphone amp!Think of the possibilities.
Currently the V3 can delivery mega buck transport bit perfect data
streamed over the ethernet and has a very respectable DAC. It' s main
weakness is the powersupply. A battery would do nicely to fix that and
provide portability around the house. Add a decent headphone amp and

[slim] play file automatically

2006-08-11 Thread lrossouw

I want something that I can run from the windows command line (or other
program) that uses command line to play a file automatically.

Let me explain it literally. I have a podcast download program that
lets me run a command with the path to the just completed podcast file
automatically once the download is complete. Now I want this command
to send the file to the squeezebox for playing.

I understand that you can start a file playing with telnet but how do
you do it automatically via a command line parameter?

Cheers
Louis

ps: i can write basic bat files and VBA but that is about it. not
much of a programmer i'm afraid.

I'm a bit confused Andy. If one uses 6.3.1 and Squeezenetwork, is the

[slim] Can't connect to Internet Radio

2006-08-11 Thread Ringerrr

SlimServer Version: 6.3.1
Player Firmware Version: 40
Host: Intel Mac OS X 10.4.7 (firewall ports open and enabled)
Using Squeezebox 1

Get the following error message (from the Web Interface) when I attempt
to connect to any Internet Radio Stations: There was an error loading
the remote feed for (for example) SHOUTcast Internet Radio: (Failed to
connect to content.us.squeezenetwork.com:8080. Perl's error is
'Resource temporarily unavailable'. )

On the squeezebox display itself I get the messages: 'failed to parse'
and 'failed to connect' to (something like) us.squeezenetwork.com.

I thought, with SB1, I don't have access to the SqueezeNetwork -
(certainly it doesn't give me a PIN so I can't register my player).
Does this mean I can no longer receive Internet Radio at all without
buying a whole new Squeezebox (despite the fact it was working fine
until just a few weeks ago about the time that the Transporter was
announced, co-incidentally)?

Any help/advice gratefully received

Some people do it.

However if you run into wireless problems it will compound them. In
short, you're asking for trouble.

Each wireless packet will now have to go over two hops: SS - wireless
router - SB. You increase latency and decrease speed and throughput
each time. As I said, in certain situations this may work without any
adverse effects - every time I post this I always get a few people
saying works for me. Be that as it may, if yourself or a neighbour
buys a 2.4 GHz phone or sets up a new wireless network on the same
channel as you it may not work for you anymore.

You already have a cable going to your modem-router, be it phone line
or CATV cable, what's one more going from the router to your SS box?
You don't have to run it all over your room, just place the SS box
beside the router and run a short wire in the back.

Besides, why hide some of those really nice looking Mini-ITX cases?
:-) Particularly if it's silent.

2006-08-11 Thread andyg

We use SqueezeNetwork to store the list of Shoutcast stations, so your
SlimServer is just trying to download a small file from there to get
this list. That error means it's having some problem downloading the
file.

You can try downloading it with a web browser to make sure your
connection is OK. If this works and SlimServer still doesn't work,
you may need to set a proxy server in SlimServer settings.

[slim] SSH connection fron Squeezebox to firewall possible?

2006-08-11 Thread sbn

Hi

At the dorm where I live, our internet connection requires an open SSH
connection to the firewall.

The computers automatically obtains an IP through DHCP but, we're not
able to access anything outside our LAN, before opening an SSH
connection to the firewall. If I purchase a Squeezebox, I'll therefore
need to open such an SSH connection from the IP address of the

Not really, no. the time/date graphics have to come from somewhere.
The Squeezebox

I know the DD-WRT creator has gotten DD-WRT to load on several ASUS
router models.

If he can make a DD-WRT to work on this model you could install

For this range of products ASUS makes source available as it is GPL.
There are also some 3rd party variants. The following forum is good
for info on related products.
http://wl500g.info/

It is a MIPS based system so if the system has enough RAM and CPU power
- there should be no problem.

However, it has been difficulty to get the Asus router products in some
countries.

If this is similar to the WL-500G then DD-WRT is compatible with it:

My use of the word dumb was not intended to offend anybody... In
computing terms, a dumb devices refers to a terminal-like behaviour,
where all logic is contained on a server elsewhere. Just like the SB

The alarm runs in SlimServer. WOL will wake the server up if you press
the power button on the remote. But if the server is asleep, it can't
activate the SB which would activate WOL.

You may want to try an alarm set in SqueezeNetwork.

A different, maybe simpler approach (if you're running Windows) would
be to install MP3Tag - that has the capability to output reports on
your music library. It ouputs directly from your filesystem, instead
of your DB, so you have to add a time allowance for it to scan.

I use MP3Tag all the time, but I haven't tried the export
functionality. It works great from what I can see, though, and the
export layouts are also user-contributed, for example:

Squeezebox on the hip? Hmmm, you need to get in touch with the guy that posted that because the stand looked like a handle, that made it a portable unit. Therefore, when you drop it, the vacuum display shouldn't break. It was a design flaw which was discussed at great length and with at times, great hilarity. :)

Nice suggestion Andy! Unfortunately, looking at /etc/resolv.conf reveals
the following:

nameserver 212.42.1.60

...where WAG54GX2 is the name of my Linksys router and 212.42.1.68 and
212.42.1.60 are the correct DNS entries supplied by my ISP that have
been programmed into the router (which has a LAN address of

127.0.0.1 to resolve the content.us.squeezenetwork.com domain?

Incidentally, I wonder if this issue may be to do with upgrading to
6.3.1 - everything worked fine under 6.2 (from memory).

I wonder what would happen if you set the files to be read-only...
would they still get corrupted? (In which case I'd mistrust either the
readonly setting (in Windows, trust b*gger all!) or your hard drive!)
Would the scan itself fail (because it needs to change a file, but
can't)?

I suppose there's also the possibility that some other process is
corrupting the files; say, if you're running another music app that's
changing files on the fly (possibly via a well-hidden configuration
setting). (I remember once doing lots of damage to my WMA tags by
foolishly letting WMP try to fix them for me, but I'm fairly sure I
explicitly asked WMP to do it. And the files weren't rendered
unplayable, just my carefully-assigned genres were replaced by those
chosen by a bunch of brainless jerks with no taste :-(.)

[slim] Re: Can't connect to Internet Radio

2006-08-11 Thread andyg

Hmm I need to look into how Net::DNS finds nameservers, there may be a
bug in there. When you run with --d_http_async, there is a message
right at startup and looks like this:

2006-08-11 20:09:19.9237 Async: Verifying if we can use nameserver
192.168.100.1...
2006-08-11 20:09:19.9238 Testing lookup of www.google.com
2006-08-11 20:09:19.9525 Lookup successful, using 192.168.100.1 for
DNS lookups

Does this check fail for you?

The reason this problem didn't exist in 6.2 was because it used the
gethostbyname call. The reason we can't use that anymore is because it
blocks SlimServer for many seconds when it can't resolve something. See
bugs 1627 and 3309.

[slim] Streaming to Sony PSP through RSS feed?

2006-08-11 Thread derwin

Hi,
I have been trying unsucessfully to connect to the slimserver stream
through my PSP and was looking for some assistance.
I have done the following:

Setup a xml file on the slim server (replacing the status.xml) with my
code
Did you ever get this working? I have setup an RSS feed which points
to the stream.mp3 file but I get an error stating the server does not
support this feature

I setup the slimserver to post the following xml:

- rss version=2.0
- channel
titleMy Sony PSP Music Feed/title
linkhttp://192.168.1.109:9000/xml//link
descriptionMy Home Music Feed for the Sony PSP/description
languageen-US/language
lastBuildDateMon, 26 Dec 2005 19:59:13 -1000/lastBuildDate
- item
titlestream.mp3/title
linkhttp://192.168.1.109:9000/xml//link
pubDateMon, 26 Dec 2005 19:59:13 -1000/pubDate
enclosure url=http://192.168.1.109:9000/stream.mp3;
type=audio/mpeg /
descriptionTest to the stream/description
/item
/channel
/rss

From the psp I point the RSS reader to :
http://192.168.1.109:9000/xml/status.xml
It sucessfully adds the feed.

When I play the feed it looks like its going to work then gives me an
error - The server does not support this feature.

Any idea why connecting to the slimserver stream (stream.mp3) is
different than some other mp3 stream (namely the sony example?)

Any ideas for a work around?
Thanks
Doug

no - unfortuntly, just pointing the psp browser to the stream starts a
download that never ends. Sony has shown a couple of examples of
streaming mp3s through RSS feeds but it seems that they must be linked
to a n individual file?
thanks

2006-08-11 Thread ob_kook

I read through the bug reports and it seems they are talking more about
the folders and songs not showing up in the library. I am having this
problem too, but I am also having the problem where characters will not
even show up on the SB2 screen.

Are others able to display asian characters on their squeezebox
itself?

What about streaming radio stations?

[slim] Re: Can't connect to Internet Radio

2006-08-11 Thread andyg

So here is how Net::DNS finds a DNS server. The default is 127.0.0.1 so
if it can't find another server using any of these methods it will use
localhost.

/etc/resolv.conf
~/.resolv.conf (home dir)
./.resolv.conf (current dir)
RES_NAMESERVERS environment variable

These are all read from top to bottom, with anything found overwriting
a previously found item. So if you have the environment variable
RES_NAMESERVERS set, it'll overwrite your normal resolv.conf value.
You could use this variable to manually set the DNS server if all else
fails.

[slim] Re: Apostrophe in song title causes duplicate listing?!

2006-08-11 Thread turmon

Blarg, the system just ate my earlier post. Short and sweet version:

I had this problem and fixed it. Problem was exactly as described,
single quotes in song titles or in album names caused duplicate display
in, e.g., album song lists. Super annoying. Always two appearances of
the culprit - never 3. Examining the URL of the twins showed the
filenames were identical.

I have tried to attach a jpg showing the problem.

My setup: server 6.3, SB 2, 2 slimp3's, macos 10.4. Simple rebuilds of
the sqlite db (or manual deletion followed by rebuild) did not solve.

My music files are in /Users/Shared/Music. My home dir,
/Users/my-login/Music/iTunes, is symlinked into /Users/Shared/Music.

On closer inspection of my settings, I found the problem was, I gave
the slimserver two ways to find my music files.

I told it to use iTunes to find my music library (hence telling it to
follow the second path named above) as well as manually specifying the
path to my music via the Music Folder option (and I gave it the first
path named above).

I think the server might have gone down both paths to add files in.
And furthermore, I think there is some code in there that is
normalizing the file names to avoid dupes due to symlinks, and that
that code is failing for pathnames containing single quotes. The code
bit is clever, but IMHO this is a bug -- if the code bit had not been
there, the problem would have been a lot easier to diagnose. I'm not
saying remove the code bit, just make it work properly.

Incidentally, I seem to remember earlier versions of slimserver did not
follow symlinks properly so you had to specify the root music folder
manually.

Hope this helps.

I just tried switching from a coaxial to an RCA cable it it works fine.
Kinda' stinks 'cause I figured digital out would be the way to go.

what kind of receiver do you have?

It really sounds like the receiver is malfunctioning - it seems it is
losing the s/pdif signal when it goes silent. It's not something I've
heard of but I can think of a few possible ways it might happen. You
might want to try the optical connection instead.

It really depends on the quality of the DAC in your receiver. Which
depends a lot on the age of it, since DACs get better following Moore's
Law, new designs are a lot better than old ones, even fairly high end.

The SqueezeBox 3 has a pretty good DAC. I would expect it to be better
than a four or five year old 'theater receiver' I would not expect it

to be better than something like a Meridian Control center, but
the Meridian costs at least $8,000

How many of you use RCA?

First of all, there is little point in asking such a poll question.
The user community is not the same as the folks on the forums and
mailing lists. So it is not at all clear what the answer would mean,
even if you got a decent statistical sample.

Do you mean how many folks use the SqueezeBox analog output RCA jacks?
A lot, probably the majority. Or do you mean how many use the RCA jack
for digital out (S/PDIF)? A lot of folks do that, but I do not expect it
to be a majority. I have tested both the coax/rca digital out and the
toslink (optical) link to my external DAC, and I can tell absolutely

no difference between them.

YMMV
