Re: [slim] 6.5.0 remote mysqld

2006-09-20 Thread Michael Herger

Should 6.5.0 respect a dbsource entry in slimserver.conf that points to
a remote SQL server? It keeps trying to start it's own local mysqld,
but I don't want MySQL running on the system I'm hosting Slimserver on.
Is there a way to force it to bypass starting the local MySQL?

If you have the appropriate server configuration in slimserver.pref then
slimserver will try to use that server instead. I was using SlimServer 6.3
with my old MySQL 3.24.something, which worked fine. I had to remove that
configuration manually for SlimServer 6.5 to use its own MySQL deamon (3.x
is just too old for this).

It's not a biggie for me, I use Firefox, where the pages also seem to
have changed views (smaller font?) - but for other people in the world
using a laptop with res of 1024 X 786 as a main PC, who like to pull
around their windows, this might appear a little hokey...

Use the Handheld skin if you want something space saving. Runs easily in
320x240 pixels - should be fine on your laptop, too. You'll loose the two
pane window, but it's otherwise very similar to the default skin.

I guess the nightly testers would be miffed about that - but the

[slim] 6.5 Internet Radio - Connection Timed Out

Hi All.

Since upgrading to 6.5, I can no longer receive any internet radio.

running the latest offical release 6.5.

Here is the debugging log:

2006-09-21 14:22:37.2227 This player supports direct streaming for

I have tried increasing the server setting for radio timeouts to 20,
but no luck. There seems to be an error coming up within the server

Can anyone help? Anybody else have the same issue?

I don't think it's "neglect" so much as that the hardware just isn't
capable of it. I remember that Slim Devices attempted to get FLAC
working on the SB1, but it didn't have the CPU power. If FLAC is too
much, Vorbis definitely won't work. The MP3 decoding is done in a
dedicated chip which can't be changed.

That's probably part of why they moved to the all-software
architecture for SB2/3/Transporter.

[slim] Re: Wanted: New Hardware - Squeezebox Portable

2006-09-20 Thread danbrew

As a relative newcomer to the SlimDevice world, I'll add my two cents...
the reason I bought the SB was to have ONE copy of my music that I could
use in my bedroom. If I'm sitting in my computer room I'll just use the
speakers on the PC... but I wanted the option to bring the tunes to the
audio system in the bedroom. It works just fine - perfect for me. I
can browse all of my local music and I'm also using Rhapsody, so it's a
pretty neat solution.

I remember when SB1 came out - I recall thinking at the time how cool
it was and I thought about buying then, but didn't for some reason -
can't remember why at the moment, but seem to distantly recall it was a
technical issue of sorts that I had a beef with. I'm glad I waited and
came back - the SB3 rocks.

Anyway, my $0.02.

Not quite that simple - you have to work out another URL, and then
enter that into the squeezebox. From memory (I can't log in to the web
pages at the moment), to get the other URL, you need to:

- Go to the audio commentary page (the one that just lists all the
that's playing that day), and view the source of the page. I can't
remember if you can just view the source of the whole page, or if you
need to right click over the link and do 'This Frame', 'View Source'.

- Search through the source code for the text that describes the game
you want to listen to. Just before that description, you should see an
encoded URL that looks similar to:
uggc%3A//zsvyr.nxnznv.pbz//yvir/ersyrpgbe%3A9.nfk%3Foxhc%3D9

- To decode this URL, do the following:
1) replace %3A with :
2) replace %3F with ?
3) replace %3D with =
4) swap all remaining letters with the letter 13 places away from it in
the alphabet - so replace 'a' with 'n', and 'n' with 'a'. Similarly
swap 'b' and 'o', 'c' and 'p' and so on all the way through to 'm'
   and 'z'.

You should now have what looks like a normal URL, beginning with
http:// as you'd expect. This is the URL you need to give to
slimserver to play the commentary. I use the 'radio tune in' option on
the webpage to do this, but I guess you could put the URL into a
playlist to make it possible to play via the remote. The URL stays the
same for each game, so you only need to do all the above once.

Interestingly, you'll note that this URL doesn't have your subscription
info in it, so you can play the audio without having to go through the
usual login process. Which means it's quite easy to completely forget
the password you need to use to view the premium web pages, explaining
why I said I had to give all these instructions from memory. Apologies
if they're not totally accurate...

Even if MIP and Slimserver are installed on the same box, unless you can
make them "see" the drive root path the same way, integration between
the two won't work either within Slimserver or using "send to" AFAIK.

The best way I found to make playlists in MIP, convert and send them

I'm using a pair of Intelix A2 baluns to get music from my living room
to my kitchen through CAT5e cabling. The sound quality is
indistinguishable from the source, at least with the mid-fi system I've
got in the kitchen. However, be careful to choose baluns that cover the
full frequency range. The Intelix A2s are spec'ed for 10 to 50K Hz (+/-
3dB). Many of the other audio baluns I looked into only went down to 60
Hz.

By the way, if you use Cat5 for baluns, you must use dedicated cable,
as they cannot share a cable with any Ethernet or active networking
devices (routers, bridges, switches, etc.)

[slim] Music IP Mixer and Network Drive

2006-09-20 Thread DannyKudos

Hi Folks
I have moved my music to a NAS drive, as my laptop's hard drive was
filling fast. All is well EXCEPT MusicIP mixer is no longer able to
send mixes.

My theory is that slimserver refers to my network drive in
\\device\directory\subdirectory , whereas musicip uses drive letters.
Seeing as I cant get slimserver to understand mapped drive letters, and
musicip mixer doesnt give you the option to specify location in old
school fashion, is there any way I can get my mixes to slimserver ?

Cheers !

Re: [slim] Crestron for Transporter?

2006-09-20 Thread dean blackketter

There's at least one Crestron module in development now:

I also heard from Patrick that there was some interest from other
Crestron developers he spoke to at CEDIA. I'll post more when I hear
some details.

Also, the RS-232 port can be used as a serial connection to the
SlimServer CLI, using a plugin that Felix developed. Other plugins
can also use the RS-232 port for their own purposes. Felix's plugin
is not in the 6.5 release that's going out today, but it'll be
available for download soon.

SlimServer seems like a more flexible solution that would work for the
Squeezeboxes as well.

The SlimServer API is very rich, and adding support for automation
systems is straight-forward. Note that AMX already has a rich interface
to the SlimServer, here's a screenshot from it:

   http://sourceforge.net/project/screenshots.php?group_id=62827

Using RS-232 is kinda lame for an automation system in this case.
TCP/IP is way better (way faster, quite rich), and the SlimServer
supports that today.

I'm not sure what/how the RS-232 interface behaves on the Transporter.
But as I said, the existing TCP/IP CLI interface is very rich and would
support the Transporter as well as Squeezebox 1's, 2's, and 3's. It's a
no-brainer that would be the interface to use.

I don't think Slim Devices would write such a module. It's up to
someone in Crestron land to do that.

There are improvements to the streaming engine that really help with

[slim] Squeezebox wav frequency limitations

2006-09-20 Thread blazerte

My Squeezebox (V1) only seems to play stereo 44.1Khz wav files properly.
32Khz stereo wav sounds like Chipmunks singing (44.1/32.0 too fast?) and
44.1Khz mono wav files are also played too fast (2x ?). I've read in
another thread here that 48Khz wav are played too slow.

Is this a limitation of the hardware DAC? What about the Squeezebox V2
and above? From the Hardware Comparison wiki it seems that 48Khz should
be supported in V2 and above. But not lower frequencies or single
channel (mono)?

I've looked all over to try to verify these observations, with no luck.

BTW, the 32Khz wav came from a downloaded asf windows media stream that
I was trying to play. Used mplayer to convert it to wav.

Thanks
Bruce

Does SlimServer running as a service on your system? If so, you'll
want to start up the SlimServer service.

net start slimvc

To restart a running server, you'd need to stop it first with

net stop slimsvc

But you may get the same error message that you get when running
slim.exe directly. My guess is that the crashing SlimServer is somehow
leaving a lock on the my.cnf file (which I believe SlimServer rewrites
when it starts up). You can try to delete the file before restarting
SlimServer, but inadvertent file locks can sometimes be a PITA to deal
with.

the docs carefully.

FWIW, I also seem to recall some minor vulnerability with OpenSSH 3.8a

compile from '04. You might want to explore WinSSHD at

think the client was free for personal use, but shortly thereafter I
converted the Windows box to Debian so I never purchased.

[slim] Restart Slimserver from Command line

2006-09-20 Thread pc4ever1

I'm having problems having version SS 6.5.1 stop when I'm playing music

like to use the command line to "restart" slimserver. I'm currently
using VNC to do this but I want to simplify this process by using the
command line.

Background:
**
I have OpenSSH installed on my Windows XP system

I have tried to use some commands via "putty/ssh" and got the following
errors.

C:\Program Files\SlimServer\server>slim.exe -remove
OpenSCManager failed: Access is denied

C:\Program Files\SlimServer\server>slim.exe

Files\SlimServer\server\Cache\my.cnf: Permission denied at
/PerlApp/Slim/Utils/MySQLHelper.pm line 164.

Could someone tell me what I can do to correct this.

Is there a direct command to "restart" slimserver from the command
line?

I have printed out all the commands from slim.exe --help and didn't
recognize anything to restart slimserver.

TIA

[slim] Re: iTunes 7

2006-09-20 Thread barcar

The "automatically download missing album artwork" preference (and the
"get album artwork" menu item) in iTunes 7 downloads artwork to a
sub-folder in your iTunes folder and creates a pointer in the music
file.

Seems that artwork downloaded in this way is not detected by SlimServer
(6.5b3 and presumably older versions).

If you want to back out of the artwork you've downloaded and apply it
in the "old" way it's pretty easy...

If you want to be cautious and target just the affected albums you can
run the "ITC" files in your "iTunes\Album Artwork" directory through a
tool like JpegExtractor to get the downloaded artwork images. This
allows you to see which albums are affected (You can also save the
artwork for application via the iTunes "Get Info" method which stores
the artwork in the music file like before).

Next you select the affected files in your library (or just select your
entire library) and right-click the "Clear downloaded artwork" option -
this only seems to clear artwork downloaded using the new methods so
your other artwork should be safe. But only a fool wouldn't take a
backup first.

And don't forget to switch the "automatically download missing album
artwork" setting off in iTunes to prevent reoccurrence.

I guess a future version of SlimServer should support the new artwork
storage method although why Apple have had to dream up something new is
a mystery to me. Why can't they just store cover.jpg in the music
folder?

Re: [slim] OpenSSH setup guide for Windows XP

2006-09-20 Thread Michael Herger

The problem is most of the guides I find are for
Unix/Linux and I don't exactly know where to put some files.

I googled for "openssh windows" and found this:

[slim] OpenSSH setup guide for Windows XP

2006-09-20 Thread 4mula1

I've searched high and low for a decent setup guide for OpenSSH for
Windows on Windows XP. I want to be able to tunnel Softsqueeze from
work or wherever and hate having to manually open up the needed ports
on my router. The problem is most of the guides I find are for
Unix/Linux and I don't exactly know where to put some files.

Does such a guide exist?

Yes thats what I would like. I didn't know there was a screensaver,

Re: [slim] Re: How long can a phono cable be before sound quality isseriously effected?

2006-09-20 Thread Patrick Dowling

Just thinking out loud - Couldn't you get two rca Y cables to split the left
and right channels to two outputs one to the local stereo and the other to a
cat5e cable, wiring the appropriate rca connectors to both ends the cat5e
cable. With exception of signal degradation i.e noise are there any other
risks?

I did run into Gefen which sells products for doing this but by the time you do
this you've almost purchased another SquuezeBox.

If your mini system supported digital input, you could run a long RG-6
coax (cable TV) cable from the PC. This would be much better than
running a long un-balanced audio cable.

Pat, I take your point on the relative costs, but do you have any
specific recommendations for balun devices? I'm thinking about using my
existing cat5e wiring to get line-level audio to the other side of the
house. A Google search turned up devices by ETS and Intelix that seem

[slim] Re: Squeezebox and Synology NAS

2006-09-20 Thread flipflip

Right. Check the README.txt on my homepage (see link in the signature
below).

I recommend a DS-106 (or a DS-106x if you are in Switzerland) or a
CS-406(e). The more memory the DS has, the smoother things will run.
The DS-106 with 64 MB is fine. The CS-406 with 128 MB and a faster CPU
is great but also rather expensive. I would not recommend a DS-101j
because it has only 32 MB and has another type of CPU (Intel XScale,
ARM compatible) which won't be supported in the upcoming release of
SSODS (which will support Slimserver 6.5). The DS-106e is like the
DS-106 with less memory and some software features disabled. The
DS-106j looks like it has a slower CPU (200 MHz).

A lot has been written about these things here, as Michael pointed out.
Still, feel free to ask further questions if things are unclear to you.

Regards,
flip

[slim] Questions about new 24/96 support

2006-09-20 Thread Free Lunch

I just installed the 9/19 nightly which features 24/96 downsampling to 24/48..

THANK YOU!!

I found it interesting that the downsampling is being done via the
firmware and apparently at the SB. I had always thought we'd see
this support appear via transcoding.

Does anyone have any info on how the downsampling was implemented? I
did some searches but could not come up with any info. I don't think
the firmware source is public so I can't check it out that way. I'd
like to avoid asking the devs because I know they're busy

Thanks,

[slim] SB Wireless not so bad in comparison

2006-09-20 Thread Peter
There's been a lot of talk about problems with wireless operation of
Squeezeboxes. I never had any problems with my SB1 and 4 SB3's so far.

OTOH last month I bought a wireless IP camera (Sitecom, apparently a
rebadged D-Link). It had serious problems in maintaining a wireless link
in the room that I want to put the camera in. The SB3 in that same room
always worked perfectly. I returned the Sitecom and got a twice as
expensive Axis 207W which started crashing several times a day. Or so I
thought. The real problem turned out to be that it also lost it's
wireless link and was unable to restore the connection without a reboot.

The Axis now works reliably over the SB3 that's functioning as a
wireless bridge.

Peter

Hi

still looking for a decent remote control for my SB's which are hidden

It seems to support WiFi and has a 640x480 display and using the RF

Follow-up... confirmed this isn't (solely) related to QT 7.1.3. AAC/M4A
tracks encoded under iTunes 7 (QT713) scan & play fine if artwork is not
embedded within the file (tracks with referenced artwork also okay).
Once artwork is embedded, slimserver can't handle the track... although
FAAD appears to decode properly. I've added comments to bugs 4143 and

[slim] Re: Slimeserver 6.31 and Vista RC1: Player can't connect?

2006-09-20 Thread stlblufan

I have Slimserver working under RC1 without any issues. Be sure to:

(1) Run the install package as an administrator (right click/run as
administrator).

(2) If slimserver starts after the install, close it.

(3) Open the Windows Firewall and add three ports: TCP 3483; UDP
3483; and TCP 9000.

(4) Open the properties for Slimserver.exe. Click on the
compatability tab. Check "run this program as administrator" and click
ok.

(6) Enable media sharing in the Network and Sharing Center.

(7) Find the folder that contains your music and enable sharing on it
and all subfolders. (Right click the folder / click "share"). Note
that at least on my computer, although Windows says that you can select
multiple folders to share, I had to do this individually for each folder
/ subfolder.

(8) Enjoy.

I think that what blkwrx is after is going straight into displaying the
current track. Even if the Now Playing screensaver is activated as the

the top menu item (i.e. displaying the literal string "Now Playing"

I listen to the Sheffield Wednesday commentary from Premium TV on my
