[slim] Slimserver and reconnecting to radio streams
Hi folks, I am running SlimServer 6.5x on Windows 2003 Server and have run into a little problem. The slimserver has been tuned into a single radio station feed and currently streams to around 10 players. There is a little problem with this setup which I am hoping to fix, namely, if for any reason the slimserver looses sight of the radio feed it wont reconnect and I have to manually click Play on the server. Does anyone know of a mod or a code change that can allow me to set a flag to tell the server to continously keep retrying to establish the link to the radio feed if it gets disconnected? I haven't had a lot of time for this, but I had a quick look around and came to the conclusion that some very useful information is in IEC 61937 (the standard which basically defines how you wrap this stuff up for S/PDIF, before sending it using IEC 60958). Hard drives are cheap though, so I've just bought myself a 400GB drive. This will be more than enough to hold all my music as FLAC and transcoded MP3 versions (car player iPod) for the next few years. Something else to consider though is backups. Up until now I've used a network attached 80GB hard drive to do automatic backups of my MP3s to. This won't be large enough to backup my FLACs to, so I'm wondering if I should shell out on another big drive. Pretty much all my music is ripped from my own CDs, so I realise that I could recover from a drive failure by re-ripping. I guess it is just a case of weighing up the likelihood of a drive failure, the cost of another drive, and the time hassle of ripping everything again. Like a lot of people, I once briefly thought of my original CDs as the backup. But then I thought, would I pay $70 for an extra 250GB external drive as insurance against spending many hours re-ripping and re-tagging? You bet. Even with my modest 300 CD collection it's a no-brainer. Or to put it another way, is my time worth more than $3/hr (figuring a very optimistic 5 mins per CD)? I have had 2 harddisk crashes during the last 1.5 year. The last crash made the disk unreadable but fortunately enough it didn't contain any personal data so I just had to reinstall the OS on a new drive. The first crash was about to be a catastrope, the disk was readable but the directory that had contained all my digital photographs where gone. At that time I did manually backups and started to look att the CDROM disks and found that the last backup was a year old. However, after some investigation I realized that it was only the photo directory in the file system that was trashed and the sub directories and all the pictures was still readable and could be found in the /lost+found directory. After these issues I don't trust myself to remember to do backups, so now I do automatic backups once a week to another internal disk plus to an external USB disk. I have been thinking about to do backups to another location in case of fire or some other catastophe but haven't gone so far yet. Even though I have all the orginal music CD's I would not like to go through the ripping, tagging and rating process once again. -- erland Erland Isaksson 'My homepage' (http://erland.homeip.net) 'My download page' (http://erland.homeip.net/download) (Developer of 'TrackStat' (http://erland.homeip.net/download/do/viewapplication?name=slimserver-trackstat) , 'SQLPlayList' (http://erland.homeip.net/download/do/viewapplication?name=slimserver-sqlplaylist) , 'DynamicPlayList' (http://erland.homeip.net/download/do/viewapplication?name=slimserver-dynamicplaylist), 'Custom Browse' (http://erland.homeip.net/download/do/viewapplication?name=slimserver-custombrowse) and 'RandomPlayList' (http://erland.homeip.net/download/do/viewapplication?name=slimserver-randomplaylist) plugins) erland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3124 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28360 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

MillmoorRon;143015 Wrote: This is (the end) of my log file after starting a not played songs dynamic playlist and trying (mostly unsuccessfully) to skip a few tracks. Does this tell you anything? It looks like it takes about 4 seconds for DynamicPlayList to retreive a new track for a TrackStat playlist. You are running one of the playlists that should be pretty fast, so there are probably other TrackStat playlists that takes a lot more than 4 seconds. TrackStat also retreives 50 tracks even though DynamicPlayList only needs one. The reason for this is that some random selection code is done in the perl code instead of int the SQL query. I think there is a lot of optimizing potential in this part of the code, it really looks like I didn't have performance in mind when I wrote it. I will put an entry on the TrackStat wish list to optimize this. All this probably means that if you click the next track button it will take about 4 seconds until you see any response and the new track starts to play. Is this how it feels ? [slim] Re: Duplicate Albums
Hi. I've had a number of versions of slimserver over time, but when I upgraded to 6.5 and rescanned my music library, many albums (not just compilations) suddenly show three listings for every single individual song. Albums are only listed once. So, for example, if I go into an album with 11 songs (and I've validated that there are only 11 files), each song shows up three times for a total of 33 songs. When I look at song info for the dupes, they show the same path and the rest of the info is identical. I've clear the library and rescanned a couple times, and I get the same effect. My SlimServer is running on Windows XP. All of my music is under a single directory on an external hard drive. I don't have any playlists and I use a tag editor to clean up the tags. From the URL's that I see when I hover over each song in the SlimServer interface, it makes it look like it scanned the library three times consecutively or something. Hard to tell. Any suggestions? [slim] Re: 6.5.0 Problem
I'm not sure if a downgrade to 6.3.1 solves the problem. It would be a bit strange if it did, because the MySQL database in 6.5 should be faster than the SQLite database that was used in 6.3. If it also affects Search and Now Playing it would be interesting to se a log with DynamicPlaylist debuggin enabled when this happens. When you skip to next track there is DynamicPlayList/TrackStat code executed, but when you use Now Playing and Search no code in DynamicPlayList/TrackStat should execute. Of course it could be that now playing is slov when slimserver reaches the end of the track, this will actually happen a bit before you hear the track change since there is buffering involved. I think the actual track switch can be about 30 seconds before you hear it switch due to buffering. The buffering time might vary depending on a number of parameters, for example network speed between the SqueezeBox and slimserver computer. I have a feeling the hardware isn't your problem, it shouldn't be a problem handling a 3 rows table with that hardware. You might want to try to lower the setting in TrackStat that says: NUMBER OF SONGS/ALBUMS/ARTISTS TO USE IN DYNAMIC PLAYLISTS From the logs it looks like it is set to 50 now but if you lower it to 10 or 20 you might get better performance. I'll try to optimize the algoritm in TrackStat in one of the next TrackStat releases, today it's really bad regarding performance as I mentioned in my previous post. -- erland Erland Isaksson 'My homepage' (http://erland.homeip.net) 'My download page' (http://erland.homeip.net/download) (Developer of 'TrackStat' (http://erland.homeip.net/download/do/viewapplication?name=slimserver-trackstat) , 'SQLPlayList' (http://erland.homeip.net/download/do/viewapplication?name=slimserver-sqlplaylist) , 'DynamicPlayList' (http://erland.homeip.net/download/do/viewapplication?name=slimserver-dynamicplaylist), 'Custom Browse' (http://erland.homeip.net/download/do/viewapplication?name=slimserver-custombrowse) and 'RandomPlayList' (http://erland.homeip.net/download/do/viewapplication?name=slimserver-randomplaylist) plugins) erland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3124 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28195 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

hi all, the last day or so when listening to my college stream here: http://146.186.221.181:8000/ during the day i have experienced a lot of stuttering. usually SS plays it fine for about 15-30min, and then starts stuttering. if i use the remote to power off and then play again, or use SS to stop and then play again, its fine for another 15-30. so i am guessing its not net congestion. i'm not nessarily blaming SS, and i have restarted it, and it seems to be better now, but it was happening. Surely someone knows whether we are supposed to be able to turn artwork off. Or is there no longer a concern about artwork's impact on slimserver??!! Artwork a much less of a concern, as it is collected by a separate process, cached by the server and somewhat more easily left out by not selecting 'gallery mode'. The original pref was put in becuase it was a very long post-scan process plus affected the presence of the browse artwork option, and caused it to take a very long time to load. The appearance of single artworks on song pages and album pages was not the main reason for that pref. -kdf Thanks Firstly in reply to ceejay - I was meaning actually turning off looking for artwork at all (like in older SS releases), have already discovered the joys of the gallery!! But thanks for putting a thought forward! :) However, I gather from KDF's post that SS isn't as bogged down by artwork as the older servers were. But why is this still in SS 6.5 help section then?! :) Memory usage for Artwork Artwork for large song libraries places a significant memory load on the slimserver. There are references to the cover art kept in memory of the SlimServer for each song. This can add up fairly quickly. The SlimServer stores, in memory, the path where the artwork can be found for each song. Long path names and many songs can cause the SlimServer to use more memory than is phycially installed on the server. This can have any of a number of impacts, from slow performance to complete failure of the SlimServer to run. The raw artwork file is read on demand, so artwork file size has no impact on the SlimServer itself. You can turn off the artwork scan completely to save memory usage. Its in Server Settings, additional, performance. This is what I was originally referring to and hope to avoid - even if it means no artwork at all Thanks Nic -- DrNic DrNic's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=92 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28258 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: MAC Address changed?
So I've had the problem over the last month or two that my SB3 would just stop playing and act like it was on but unresponsive till I off'd it and turned it back on. Sometimes had to unplug it and repower it. But two days ago it really trashed itself, screen went all garbled, and when I hit off, the screen cleared up and displayed I guess the last good screen data (not the off screensaver). Played some more after off, off, on, back to normal, and in the morning the display was dark. The unit was working but wouldn't connect to the network to save its life. Hooked it up wired and that worked fine, but I did notice in my wireless router that the mac address of the new DHCP client started with an ff, which makes no sense. Was ready to write it off and RMA it when played with it more and saw that funny MAC address being shown in the current settings, now that I was retry wireless. So added that to my router. Still no good. Then realized you could change it at that same location and changed it back to the right MAC address. Now works wireless and all again. So while it was saying one MAC, and that MAC was what the wired connection was working with, the false MAC was not working for the wireless connection. Thing is, that false MAC was not in my router MAC filtering, so it should not have been able to connect. So something really got trashed. The fake MAC seems to have to be reset back to the good MAC to really get the unit back to proper operation. I'm still dumbfounded how the router registered the fake MAC in DHCP and allowed network access even though the fake MAC was not authorized. Maybe something between wireless LAN and wired LAN handling in my router. Anyway, good MAC was 00:04:20:06:3A:EE and the bad MAC was FF:BB:5F:00:00:83. And I have no idea why it happened. Was running firmware 45 or 48 (whatever goes with 6.2.2) till I upgraded a few weeks ago to 6.3.x and firmware 55. Quite frustrating, but this product still rocks. I have tried the usuall - shutting both applications down, starting MIP, then starting SS. Usually that worksno luck. It's an XP Pro machine. I also tried the complete uninstall of everyhing and reinstall (i had upgraded on top of 6.3). same result. Are others having this issue? Any suggestions? Thanks. [slim] stuttering at the start of each track
I complained about this before, and no one ever answered it. I am now running 6.5 in SUSE 10.1. When I play many pieces, there is a stutter a second or two into the start of each track. The same tracks play flawlessly in WinAmp. What causes this? Is there a way to fix this? It is VERY annoying. [slim] Re: Turn off artwork in 6.5?
It is indeed correct that if you do Browse/Music Folder and then drill down through whatever is your particular directory structure to get to the bottom folder level - an individual album - you do see the cover image above the list of tracks on that album when you open this folder. I can also confirm that if artwork is not present for any album you get no image, so there is no annoying question mark graphic as in some other views. Personally I cannot see any drawback with this. If I have gone to the trouble of getting artwork for each of my albums I would not mind actually seeing it at some stage. If we can be assured that this adds no overhead or instability to the operation of SS or the rescanning then it seems fine to me the way it is. No doubt there could be a switch devised to allow this to be turned off but, frankly, why bother. Just my 2p of course. davep -- davep davep's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=61 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28258 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Browse by custom tag ?
Hi all, I have started re-ripping my cds in FLAC (it sounds way much better than my 192kbps mp3s). I include extra tags in my files : - LABEL - SOURCE (vinyl or cd or live) Would it be easy to program a plugin that would allow me to browse by label or source. I would also like to add that information in the file information in Now Playing. Thanks for giving me some clues. L. ps : i'm a programmer btw, not afraid to code it myself. -- Lowrent Lowrent's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5665 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28399 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: Browse Files ?
Create a directory somewhere. ie c:\mymusic Inside that directory create 3 shortcuts. One to the root of each drive or directory on each drive holding you music. Point slim to the dir c:\mymusic Now when you add music just use the browse music function and you will be able to access all your drives through the c:\mymusic directory. Once you add the track to the now playing playlist it will automatically add it to the DB. I assumed your using windows and not using Itunes. As mentioned previously the browse music function does not work with Itunes. And yes I know what happpens when you assume. You make an ASS out of U and ME. [slim] Re: Browse Files ?
A nice feature worth adding to SlimServer 7 would be a NewMusic folder. The server could scan that folder every x minutes to see if new music has been added. If it's the case, simply add the information to the database and move the files to the normal music storage folder. That would avoid scanning the whole huge library to simply have access to some new file via the standard browse by pages. The AudioRequest works that way (and it's the only thing i like about it...). -- Lowrent Lowrent's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5665 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28330 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
