[slim] Slimserver and reconnecting to radio streams

2006-10-06 Thread ACovelli

Hi folks,

I am running SlimServer 6.5x on Windows 2003 Server and have run into a
little problem.

The slimserver has been tuned into a single radio station feed and
currently streams to around 10 players. There is a little problem with
this setup which I am hoping to fix, namely, if for any reason the
slimserver looses sight of the radio feed it wont reconnect and I have
to manually click Play on the server.

Does anyone know of a mod or a code change that can allow me to set a
flag to tell the server to continously keep retrying to establish the
link to the radio feed if it gets disconnected?

Many thanks

Antonio

The OS has a 6GB partition, there is a separate 1GB partition for the

config was not my choice, but was set up by Dell at the time i got the

I know this set up is not ideal, but it seemed clear something else was
going on here that was causing the FileCache problem - so thanks Andy

I'll try the latest version and let u know how it goes (may be after

2006-10-06 Thread smst

I haven't had a lot of time for this, but I had a quick look around and
came to the conclusion that some very useful information is in IEC
61937 (the standard which basically defines how you wrap this stuff up
for S/PDIF, before sending it using IEC 60958). Those standards aren't
cheap to buy, so I was wondering if anyone knew of any legitimate ways
to view them for free. Do they tend to be available in public
libraries? (I'm in the UK.) University libraries maybe?

[slim] Do you backup your FLACs (or other lossless files)?

Question: Re. my lossless music files:

- I back them all up to another drive
- I don't backup don't see any point.
- I don't backup because I don't have enough disk space
- I don't backup hadn't considered a drive failure

Lossless files take up a lot of space. Hard drives are cheap though, so
I've just bought myself a 400GB drive. This will be more than enough to
hold all my music as FLAC and transcoded MP3 versions (car player
iPod) for the next few years. Something else to consider though is
backups. Up until now I've used a network attached 80GB hard drive to
do automatic backups of my MP3s to. This won't be large enough to
backup my FLACs to, so I'm wondering if I should shell out on another
big drive.

Pretty much all my music is ripped from my own CDs, so I realise that I
could recover from a drive failure by re-ripping. I guess it is just a
case of weighing up the likelihood of a drive failure, the cost of
another drive, and the time hassle of ripping everything again.

What does everyone else do?

That is true. The problem comes when I need to add DISCNUMBER tags etc.
I am still unsure what happened. I had backed up the files before I
tried to remove ID3v1 tags and apply ID3v2 tags. After this completed
the tags appeared to be there. As a result I deleted the old versions
of the files. I have upgraded the version of MP3Tag since. Currently
I have APE, ID3v1 and ID3v2 slected for read and write. None are
selected under remove. I'll try and remove the APE and ID3v1 (but
backup before).

Any advice?

Back up everything to a second drive. When new music is added this gets
copied across to the backup drive. This is fine for taking care of the
case where the main HD goes haywire but does not adress all
eventualities such as fire or flood since both disks sit next to each
other. The originals (i.e. CDs) are in boxes in another room and could
conceivably be stored at another location such as the office.

Absolutely. Like a lot of people, I once briefly thought of my original
CDs as the backup. But then I thought, would I pay $70 for an extra
250GB external drive as insurance against spending many hours
re-ripping and re-tagging? You bet. Even with my modest 300 CD
collection it's a no-brainer. Or to put it another way, is my time
worth more than $3/hr (figuring a very optimistic 5 mins per CD)? And
of course, there is plenty of room left on the drive for backing up
photos and other data.

I keep the backup drive at the office, so I'm not only protected
against hard drive failure, but also theft, fire, flooding, etc. And
the bonus: I have my FLAC tunes readily available to listen to at work.

If someone else has this problem:

I solved it like this:I recorded 2 seconds of silence in sound recorder
and called it silence.wav.
I put this file in the root of my music collection, say
'\\avpc\music\silence.wav'
I then made a little delphi program that iterates through all folders
and subfolders and inserts this filename at the top of every m3u file
(if not already present) that it encounters.

I have my FLACs backed up from my Buffalo Linkstation onto a external
firewire drive on my Mac mini. This should take care of drive failure,
but the risk of theft/fire/flooding/giant EM pulse, etc, etc still
remains.

Is there a simple way I can do a routine/scheduled remote backup? i.e.
keep a 2nd (or 3rd) drive at a physically distinct location, and have
it do background backup. It would be nice if it does an incremental
backup continuously using some sort of throttled speed setup (perhaps I
need QoS - so it doesn't usurp too much bandwidth everytime a couple of
CDs are added to the main drive).

All hard drives will fail. It's just a question of when. :-)

The only reason you'd ever move the data out of a drive is if you run
out of space and move it to a larger drive. Until this happens, or if
it never happens, the clock is ticking.

Moving to a larger drive may never happen for me, because my entire CD
collection is on it now and I still have ~100 GB left in my 193 GB
music partition on my 250 GB drive. I am adding to it very, very
slowly - at this rate it will take 10 years to fill it, by which time
the drive will surely have failed.

I've got to admit I don't do it automatically. Initially I just copied
everything from one drive to the other (drag and drop) then once a week
I add any new files in the same way.

My collection isn't growing rapidly and as I have to manually plug the
back-up drive in anyway I can't be bothered trying to put anything
intelligent around the process.

If you're on a unix-alike system, you can use rsync

to admit to having more than a small interest in the final answer!!
Surely someone knows whether we are supposed to be able to turn artwork
off. Or is there no longer a concern about artwork's impact on
slimserver??!!

Artwork a much less of a concern, as it is collected by a separate
process, cached by the server
and somewhat more easily left out by not selecting 'gallery mode'.
The original pref was put in becuase it was a very long post-scan
process
plus affected the presence of the browse artwork option, and caused it
to take a very long time to load. The appearance of single artworks on
song pages and album pages was not the main reason for that pref.

SyncToy is a good utility. It lets you define folder pairs (any number)
and gives you several options on the type of backup you want. It is
painless to use and can be scheduled.

With the few changes and additions to my library I manually backup
periodically to a 250G USB HD

I just started using this last week and it seems to do a nice job of
backing upto my ext USB drives (photos and .flac's)

I'm sure there are loads of backup utils. I've tried a few freewares,
plus some that came with HDD's (e.g. Bounceback, smartsync pro, etc).
However, I don't like tools that save backups in their own bespoke
format. I think the XP backup did this also.

Synctoy keeps it all in the same format.

SyncToy is essentially a GUI version of robocopy, which is a nice CLI
tool for directory mirroring which has been included in the reskit
tools for a while now. I have scripts which handle tagging etc for new
CD rips, and they call robocopy as a final step to sync changes to my
server.

Most of the people that's posting to this thread seems to do backups,
but if anyone reading the thread does not do regular backups think
again. I have had 2 harddisk crashes during the last 1.5 year. The last
crash made the disk unreadable but fortunately enough it didn't contain
any personal data so I just had to reinstall the OS on a new drive. The
first crash was about to be a catastrope, the disk was readable but the
directory that had contained all my digital photographs where gone. At
that time I did manually backups and started to look att the CDROM
disks and found that the last backup was a year old. However, after
some investigation I realized that it was only the photo directory in
the file system that was trashed and the sub directories and all the
pictures was still readable and could be found in the /lost+found
directory.

After these issues I don't trust myself to remember to do backups, so
now I do automatic backups once a week to another internal disk plus to
an external USB disk. I have been thinking about to do backups to
another location in case of fire or some other catastophe but haven't
gone so far yet.

Even though I have all the orginal music CD's I would not like to go
through the ripping, tagging and rating process once again.

erland, I am thinking again!

Yes I thought if I backed up all the stuff that wasnt on CD and leave
the rest (the majority) on the original CDs.

Looks like I ought to start thinking which ext HDD to buy (my wife will

Any ideas where I could advertise it, due to its rather niche

 Does this tell you anything?
It looks like it takes about 4 seconds for DynamicPlayList to retreive a
new track for a TrackStat playlist. You are running one of the playlists
that should be pretty fast, so there are probably other TrackStat
playlists that takes a lot more than 4 seconds.

TrackStat also retreives 50 tracks even though DynamicPlayList only
needs one. The reason for this is that some random selection code is
done in the perl code instead of int the SQL query. I think there is a
lot of optimizing potential in this part of the code, it really looks
like I didn't have performance in mind when I wrote it. I will put an
entry on the TrackStat wish list to optimize this.

All this probably means that if you click the next track button it
will take about 4 seconds until you see any response and the new track
starts to play. Is this how it feels ?

MillmoorRon;143703 Wrote:

What hardware do you have ?

How many tracks do you have in your library ?

The performance can be affected by:
- processor speed
- memory size
- harddisk speed

It's impossible to say which component that is critical without further
investigation/knowledge of the system.

On my AMD XP2500+ with 1GB memory and around 3000 tracks in the library
it takes less than a second to switch to next track.

[slim] Re: Duplicate Albums

2006-10-06 Thread bossman

Hi. I've had a number of versions of slimserver over time, but when I
upgraded to 6.5 and rescanned my music library, many albums (not just
compilations) suddenly show three listings for every single individual
song. Albums are only listed once. So, for example, if I go into an
album with 11 songs (and I've validated that there are only 11 files),
each song shows up three times for a total of 33 songs. When I look at
song info for the dupes, they show the same path and the rest of the
info is identical.

I've clear the library and rescanned a couple times, and I get the same
effect.

My SlimServer is running on Windows XP. All of my music is under a
single directory on an external hard drive. I don't have any playlists
and I use a tag editor to clean up the tags.

From the URL's that I see when I hover over each song in the SlimServer
interface, it makes it look like it scanned the library three times
consecutively or something. Hard to tell. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

I'm with Erland...

I lost a HDD earlier this year. It was mostly just the op system, but,
I had foolishly left some photos there. I am now looking at £3-400 to
recover the disc.

Maplins (UK) are putting out the Seagate 750MB USB drive for £299.

You don't have to be a genius to do the maths vs risk equation here.

You don't have to blow out on a whopper drive like that. I run 2x250MB
drives (fast filling up as I keep up the ripping, I might add). Earlier
this year they cost me about £200.

HOWEVER, and this is a big however

We are all noticing the price of drives coming down. This is great as
technology improves etc, BUT, much of this will be due to manufacturers
squeezing every last bit of cost out of the manufacturing process. This
often leads to compromises and often to quality issues. We, the
consumer, are often the first to spot this type of effect (just ask a
Mercedes driver over the lasy year or so). It'snot just computing.

Now I have 2 copies of everything. I'm still gambling with housefire
etc and may do something about that yet.

HDD's do failyou have been warned.

Enjoy your weekends

2006-10-06 Thread Triode

Note that 6.5 has some extra code in the server to discard key presses
which are more than 3 seconds old - this probably explains the need to
press the button multiple times.

If you remove DynamicPlayist/TrackStat do you get back to normal
performance?

[slim] Re: 6.5.0 Problem

2006-10-06 Thread erland

I'm not sure if a downgrade to 6.3.1 solves the problem. It would be a
bit strange if it did, because the MySQL database in 6.5 should be
faster than the SQLite database that was used in 6.3.

If it also affects Search and Now Playing it would be interesting to se
a log with DynamicPlaylist debuggin enabled when this happens. When you
skip to next track there is DynamicPlayList/TrackStat code executed,
but when you use Now Playing and Search no code in
DynamicPlayList/TrackStat should execute. Of course it could be that
now playing is slov when slimserver reaches the end of the track, this
will actually happen a bit before you hear the track change since there
is buffering involved. I think the actual track switch can be about 30
seconds before you hear it switch due to buffering. The buffering time
might vary depending on a number of parameters, for example network
speed between the SqueezeBox and slimserver computer.

I have a feeling the hardware isn't your problem, it shouldn't be a
problem handling a 3 rows table with that hardware.

You might want to try to lower the setting in TrackStat that says:
NUMBER OF SONGS/ALBUMS/ARTISTS TO USE IN DYNAMIC PLAYLISTS
From the logs it looks like it is set to 50 now but if you lower it to
10 or 20 you might get better performance. I'll try to optimize the
algoritm in TrackStat in one of the next TrackStat releases, today it's
really bad regarding performance as I mentioned in my previous post.

I have only had this problem since upgrading from 6.3.1, though as I

I'll just try reducing NUMBER OF SONGS/ALBUMS/ARTISTS TO USE IN

[slim] looking for an SB2

2006-10-06 Thread azinck3

Anyone looking to get rid of an SB2? I'd love to buy one off someone.
I'm most interested in wireless but am certainly open to a wired model.
I'd be interested in buying it outright, but I also have a wired SB1
and 2 wireless SB1g's and would consider offering one or two of those
in trade to offset some of the cost, if that's of interest.

FYI: If you're near Washington DC then a local deal would be
convenient, but I'm open to a deal with anyone in the States.

2006-10-06 Thread eschurr

Not sure if this is relevant, but i'll offer it up anyway.

I've been using MP3Gain with slimserver and an SB3 for quite a while
and LOVING how it keeps the songs at relatively the same volume.

However, i recently upgraded to slimserver 6.5 and now i'm getting
weird, huge volume adjusment values. Can't tell where they're coming
from and it's really a bummer.

-- MP3Gain doesn't show such large values
-- i had sound check turned on in iTunes (altho i don't like the sonic
quality of sound check) but i turned it off. I even fiddled with the
volume adjustment slider in iTunes but it makes no difference to
slimserver.

I think there's a bug in 6.5.

[slim] stream keeps stuttering

2006-10-06 Thread MrSinatra

hi all,

the last day or so when listening to my college stream here:

http://146.186.221.181:8000/

during the day i have experienced a lot of stuttering. usually SS
plays it fine for about 15-30min, and then starts stuttering.

if i use the remote to power off and then play again, or use SS to stop
and then play again, its fine for another 15-30. so i am guessing its
not net congestion.

i'm not nessarily blaming SS, and i have restarted it, and it seems to
be better now, but it was happening.

(one thing i like that seems to be new btw, is that if you quit SS and
/ or reboot your machine, whatever net stream u are playing keeps
going. i love that, b/c i hated when i'd lose the stream just from a
reboot).

Artwork a much less of a concern, as it is collected by a separate
 process, cached by the server
and somewhat more easily left out by not selecting 'gallery mode'.
The original pref was put in becuase it was a very long post-scan

 -kdf

Thanks
Firstly in reply to ceejay - I was meaning actually turning off looking
for artwork at all (like in older SS releases), have already discovered
the joys of the gallery!! But thanks for putting a thought forward! :)

However, I gather from KDF's post that SS isn't as bogged down by
artwork as the older servers were. But why is this still in SS 6.5 help
section then?! :)

Memory usage for Artwork

Artwork for large song libraries places a significant memory load on
the slimserver. There are references to the cover art kept in memory of
the SlimServer for each song. This can add up fairly quickly.

The SlimServer stores, in memory, the path where the artwork can be
found for each song. Long path names and many songs can cause the
SlimServer to use more memory than is phycially installed on the
server. This can have any of a number of impacts, from slow performance
to complete failure of the SlimServer to run. The raw artwork file is
read on demand, so artwork file size has no impact on the SlimServer
itself.

You can turn off the artwork scan completely to save memory usage. Its
in Server Settings, additional, performance.

This is what I was originally referring to and hope to avoid - even if
it means no artwork at all

Thanks

Hey something else just found with iTunes 7 (had to try it!) - album art

That's interesting. I hadn't realised until you posted that you can't
add artwork to WAVs in iTunes - I had just assumed iTunes would allow
it but keep it separate.

It _should_ work fairly well for internet radio as it's basically
bandwidth limited and the bandwidth on a satellite feed is decent. SN
I'm not so sure about, the latency is terrible and so control commands
etc would take a long time to arrive.

I'm sure if you google around you'll find people talking about general
streaming over satellite.

 I think there's a bug in 6.5.

Since the iTunes volume adjustment slider certainly works in SS 6.2.1
(I have one track with it cranked up to +100%, which SS shows as 6.02
dB, and the difference is obviously obvious), it does seem like their
might be a 6.5 problem.

What volume adjustment values does SS show for you?

Re: [slim] Re: How do you categorize your music?

2006-10-06 Thread Chip Hart
How do I categorize? Here is a full list of the genres in my library.

I find that, for genres, I have to use as few as possible because
it's so impossible to properly categorize everything.

For example, from your list:

 20thC
 Chamber

Which of these takes precedence? If someone writes 20th century
Chamber music (and I presume you have a 21stC now...), where do
you put it? Or 20thC Choral?

My goal is to have a very limited set of genres so that I don't
miss something I wanted to listen to because I went down the
wrong path. Worse, once you start to sub-categorize things,
you can play semantic games forever. Is KISS really hard rock?
Or Glam? Or Metal?

2006-10-06 Thread GrahameP

I'm having problems with albums not listing tracks in the correct order
(but not all albums do this).

I have a folder called Music.flac which contains artist/album/tracks
folders. This worked OK under 6.3.1, but is non-browsable under 6.5.0
- it thinks Music.flac is a track.

I get spurious freezes of the track title/progress on any player (SB2
softsqueeze 3.0).

I have also suffered freezes of the player menu - scrolls up or down or
left or right but then stops for about 10-20 seconds every 10 or so
steps before continuing again with some of the key presses whilst
frozen buffered up to be actioned when it un-freezes.

All on Slimserver 6.5.0 under W2003 SBS.

[slim] Re: MAC Address changed?

2006-10-06 Thread smac770

So I've had the problem over the last month or two that my SB3 would
just stop playing and act like it was on but unresponsive till I off'd
it and turned it back on. Sometimes had to unplug it and repower it.

But two days ago it really trashed itself, screen went all garbled, and
when I hit off, the screen cleared up and displayed I guess the last
good screen data (not the off screensaver). Played some more after
off, off, on, back to normal, and in the morning the display was dark.
The unit was working but wouldn't connect to the network to save its
life.

Hooked it up wired and that worked fine, but I did notice in my
wireless router that the mac address of the new DHCP client started
with an ff, which makes no sense. Was ready to write it off and RMA it
when played with it more and saw that funny MAC address being shown in
the current settings, now that I was retry wireless.

So added that to my router. Still no good. Then realized you could
change it at that same location and changed it back to the right MAC
address. Now works wireless and all again.

So while it was saying one MAC, and that MAC was what the wired
connection was working with, the false MAC was not working for the
wireless connection. Thing is, that false MAC was not in my router MAC
filtering, so it should not have been able to connect. So something
really got trashed. The fake MAC seems to have to be reset back to the
good MAC to really get the unit back to proper operation. I'm still
dumbfounded how the router registered the fake MAC in DHCP and allowed
network access even though the fake MAC was not authorized. Maybe
something between wireless LAN and wired LAN handling in my router.

Anyway, good MAC was 00:04:20:06:3A:EE and the bad MAC was
FF:BB:5F:00:00:83. And I have no idea why it happened. Was running
firmware 45 or 48 (whatever goes with 6.2.2) till I upgraded a few
weeks ago to 6.3.x and firmware 55.

Quite frustrating, but this product still rocks. Just happy it's
working 100% again.

Creating softlinks or junction points is easy for the purpose of

[slim] Re: Turn off artwork in 6.5?

2006-10-06 Thread davep

It is indeed correct that if you do Browse/Music Folder and then drill
down through whatever is your particular directory structure to get to
the bottom folder level - an individual album - you do see the cover
image above the list of tracks on that album when you open this folder.
I can also confirm that if artwork is not present for any album you get
no image, so there is no annoying question mark graphic as in some
other views.

Personally I cannot see any drawback with this. If I have gone to the
trouble of getting artwork for each of my albums I would not mind
actually seeing it at some stage. If we can be assured that this adds
no overhead or instability to the operation of SS or the rescanning
then it seems fine to me the way it is. No doubt there could be a
switch devised to allow this to be turned off but, frankly, why
bother.

Just my 2p of course.

Create a directory somewhere. ie c:\mymusic
Inside that directory create 3 shortcuts. One to the root of each

Point slim to the dir c:\mymusic
Now when you add music just use the browse music function and you will
be able to access all your drives through the c:\mymusic directory.
Once you add the track to the now playing playlist it will
automatically add it to the DB.
I assumed your using windows and not using Itunes. As mentioned
previously the browse music function does not work with Itunes.
And yes I know what happpens when you assume. You make an ASS out of U

2006-10-06 Thread Lowrent

A nice feature worth adding to SlimServer 7 would be a NewMusic
folder.

The server could scan that folder every x minutes to see if new music
has been added. If it's the case, simply add the information to the
database and move the files to the normal music storage folder.

That would avoid scanning the whole huge library to simply have access
to some new file via the standard browse by pages.

The AudioRequest works that way (and it's the only thing i like about
it...).
