That's a plus, although my original post was less of a rant, more of a
question... turned slightly more ranty as time went on.

I had done a preliminary search through docs and forums to see if this
issue had come up before and seeing nothing, posted the question;
perhaps a FAQ entry "you can roll your own if you like" would be
appropriate.

In an ideal world. the product would continue to support sqlite, *and*
now MySql, with an install time option to choose one or the other. My
two cents. Am not really interested in carrying this on further. In my
day job I have to argue with, plead to, and convince product managers
all the time who make brain dead decisions, from time to time... this
is starting to resemble work a little too much.

Cheers.

Slimserver didn't get any slimmer by adding MySql, my man.

I don't claim slimserver/squeezebox... to be enterprise products, but a
certain, reasonably high, percentage of its users happen to be technical
folks. Maybe the product line has enough mainstream appeal now that it
doesn't matter, but generally speaking ticking off your technical base
and early adopters isn't a great idea.

SlimServer does exactly that, using DBIx::Class for all the database

Um...this is a consumer product. Not an enterprise product. It is
transparent to the end user and that is all that counts. Sure, it is
another process that is running on the box but Slimserver isn't so slim
itself. Plus it is a lot cheaper than an Oracle license.

Got to roll with the punches my man, or sit the game out.

[slim] Re: Slimserver 6.5 MySQL Requirement - Bad!

2006-10-07 Thread mwatkins

I can't believe that the queries used by slimserver couldn't be
abstracted sufficiently to avoid issues with various flavours of SQL.
Its not like the queries needed to support a music catalogue are rocket
science.

While its true that there are a great many differences between the
various implementations of SQL, for a tool with needs as simple as
slimserver's, using a middleware layer to hide those differences would
have been an appropriate, even advantageous, decision.

Sure, taking the middleware db-abstraction approach would have resulted
in more databases being used, with a corresponding impact on support
queries from the multitudes. I understand that, but I don't agree with
the decision.

A better decision would have been to use db-abstraction in the core,
but announce support only for a single database, MySql if that is your
choice. Solve the supportability issue by decree, rather than limiting
the scope of the software's appeal. At least then you aren't walling
the software off from others who might be interested in different sorts
of mashups which might prove interesting to the community.

This isn't about being married to one technology, or me or others being
biggoted against another. Given that there are a plethora of
db-abstraction layers out there, and slimserver's db requirements are
practically infantile, the decision smacks of poor product management
choices.

I would tag him as "classical;contemporary". A term people use often to
describe contemporary classical music is "contemporary music". And I
would use "classical; modern" for composers such as Stravinsky or
Bartok. I think I would even use "classical; modern" for neoclassical

would be a big win.Assuming that the developers indeed have made a dreadful mistake andmade MySQL a requirement, I'd like to know... WHY?The data model and processing requirements for a tool like Slimserver
do not outgrow the abilities of so-called 'embeddable' databases suchas sqlite. Convince me otherwise, if you can.Best read the archives of the developer list. The thing that really did in SQLite IMHO was its poor performance and high memory consumption, but IIRC there were some problems with growing into more advanced SQL as well.
In my professional capacity I have shunned MySQL for years, but I'd bewilling to rant on about this requirement even if the developers had
standardized on a database engine which I prefer (Postgres, even Oracleor SQL Server). Including yet another big chunk of software raises otherissues of security, compatibility and upgrades; yet another process on
the box; another thing to manage and potentially backup. So my question is... why?In my professional capacity I frequently deal with people who are married to one technology choice or another. Since our product is closed source, I have to tell them that they need to chose their marriage or our product, because they can't have both. In this case, SlimServer is open source, so you're perfectly welcome to fire up vi or emacs and DBI into something else. I'm sure that the results would be welcomed on the wiki or as a patch.  Of course, this represents a high opportunity cost, but if you really care, the option is there.
I don't really care. I've worked as an administrator and lightweight devel/QA with MySQL, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and Oracle... they all have their issues, and they all have their positives. Unfortunately the SQL standard is almost completely non-standard, so supporting more than one in a given application means a lot of "if I'm on this database, use X, but this other one needs Y, and the third one needs Z." That means poor performance. At the end of the day, the database support decision is kind of like the implementation language decision; you either grin and bear it, or you give up, because supporting more than one is not feasible. That's just my opinion though :)

[slim] Re: stream keeps stuttering

2006-10-07 Thread bpa

In 6.5, if a stream can be handled directly by the SB3 (i.e. mp3, WMA
and Ogg-vobis), SS will try to set it up - I think this is the way
Squeezenetwork works as well.

Around the same time there have been lots of problem with shoutcasts so
there may have been updates there as well.

Given the SB3 works well with other MP3 sources, it would indicate the
problem is with Shoutcast and/or network between your SB & Shoutcast.

The problem may not have shown up in the past as the Shoutcast stream
terminated in the PC and MP3 data was rebroadcast by SS to SB.

At the moment you cannot force MP3 to be handled by SS - I am chasing a
bug in this area and I found this anomaly. So the only real way to
find out what's going on (don't forget it could be a router issue !) is
to fire up Ethereal or similar.

yes it is... its a shoutcast stream, .pls

is that a new SS/SB feature? it didn't always use to do that.

however, i didn't mean to imply it was def SS, it could def be the SB,
and i think it is b/c of the firmware update.

when i first got my SB2, (right before SB3 came out), the firmware was
not ready to handle internet streams longer than a couple of hours at
the most, and i would frequently have to power cycle the gear.

however, one of the updates, (i assume a firmware one) fixed this
issue. it wasn't doing it as of 6.3 for sure.

i think 6.5 has reintroduced this problem.

one thing i can do, is upgrade the stations shoutcast software, from
1.9.5 to 1.9.7, but i don't think thats it since it was the same with
6.3 and without issues.

any thoughts?

What operating system are you using to view the music folder? If
Windows, then these may be m3u files. The file extensions might just
be hidden from view. In Windows Explorer, to enable the display of
file extensions, select Tools > Folder Options... > View and uncheck
'Hide extensions for known file types'. Then click "Apply to All
Folders". Now you should be able to see the file extension being used
for these playlists.

Once you know the file extension, go into SlimServer's Server Settings
> File Types and enter the extension under 'Disabled Audio File
Extensions'. Then do a complete clear/rescan.

It sounds like you've done this but it's not completely clear... does
your SlimServer service run under an account that has network
privileges? To test, set it to your administrator account and see if it
will scan your music. Make sure you use the UNC path for server

[slim] Re: Tons of Problems with 6.5

2006-10-07 Thread ModelCitizen

Many 6.5 problems seem to result from not having completely uninstalled
6.3... and all the plugins. It is best (on Windows) to uninstall 6.3
(using Windows uninstall facility) and then make sure you delete the
Program Files/Slimserver directory before installing 6.5. Unfortunately
after this you have to reinstall all your plugins... making sure you get
the 6.5 version of each plugin.
It'd be good if the SlimDevices donwload page made this clear.
The tags bit is probably a different issue though.

Ceejay, are you sure you're talking about the _basic_ search ('Search
Music') and not the advanced search? The Advanced Search works like
this if you search for an artist. The basic search does not, nor is it
designed to.

Treble, again, the basic search is a simple search for a text string.
It's _not_ a search for an artist, so it won't read your mind and pull
up the tracks for the artists matched by the string. Use the Advanced
search to do that.

I had the problems with the noise at the beginning of tracks too, and I
opened a Bug Ticket
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=4312

I edited the tags of some of my mp3's with mp3tag_v2.36a, and I believe
the problem occurs only at tracks that are edited with that program.
Perhaps it doesn't write Tags properly.

Later on my server crashed, and the top command showed me 99% cpu load
for the mysql daemon.

I agree that there is still a lot work to do to fix all the problems.
My "productive system" is back at 6.3.1, too.

If you need to go back to 6.3.1 as I have, the link is here:

http://www.slimdevices.com/downloads/SlimServer_v6.3.1/

Windows users can just download the .exe version - the zip file is not
necessary. Be sure to uninstall 6.5 and make sure it's not running
when you uninstall. To be safe, it's best to also delete the directory
it was in after you uninstall. When you go back, you'll end up putting
the previous firmware back into the SB. This will require you to
re-enter the wireless network password if you're set up with wireless.

[slim] 6.5 Scanner crash No Errors

2006-10-07 Thread fish

Sorry to bring this up again, I've searched all the posts and cannot
find anyhing which helps.

I have scanner.exe crashing when I do a scan. I've used the cmd line
but when it crashs it doesn't give a back trace or errors it just stops
on a track saying it successfully added it, then nothing else. I've also
tried turning off antivirus.

I tried MP3 checker and did find some supposedly dodgy tracks which
even when removed it still crashed. I've put them back now as they play
fine and were fine under 6.2.1

Any help would be appreciated. I've tried different builds of 6.5,
6.5.1 and 7.0. I'm currently running 6.5.1.

2006-10-07 Thread treble

Hi Ceejay,
Yes, that's the behavior I would like :-)

I am using the following version:
VERSION INFO
SlimServer Version: 6.5.0 - 9916 - Windows 2000 - EN - cp1252
Server IP address: 192.168.168.210
Perl Version: 5.8.7 MSWin32-x86-multi-thread
MySQL Version: 5.0.22-community-nt

My compilations settings are as follows:
List compilation albums under each artist
List albums by all artists for that album

I have been thinking about upgrading to 6.5.1, but I am reading to many
problems with MusicMagic integration. MusicMagic (MusicIP mixer) works
ok for me on 6.5.0 (except for sometimes getting empty playlists
because of probably accented characters in filename, but that's another
thread...)

Thanks!

[slim] Tons of Problems with 6.5

2006-10-07 Thread neil5561

I have had nothing but headaches since I upgraded to 6.5 on Tuesday.
These are the issues I have had:

1) Server constantly stops running on the computer. It's completely
random, but it will just stop every once and awhile.

2) Tons of MP3's with proper tags being tagged as no album in the
server. I have seen that others have also had this problem but their
solutions have not worked for me.

3) This is the big one, there is a nasty electronic sound before every
song. It's not only when the player first starts but between every
song.

I have installed and resinstalled numberous times using the latest
builds but cannot get past all three of these problems at once. Each
time I reinstall one problem will disappear and one of the others will
take its place in rotation. It's getting pretty annoying. Right now I
want to just go pack to 6.3 and wait awhile before trying 6.5 again.
Does anyone know where I can find 6.3?

Thanks.

[slim] Re: Down to earth with a thud.......

2006-10-07 Thread bpa

Homeplug 85mbps rarely delivers 85Mbps - unless the locations are close
together - 10-25Mbps is more realistic and possibly as low as 1-2Mpbs.
See
http://www.tomsnetworking.com/2006/02/06/homeplug_turbo_adapter_round/index.html

If you are at the bottom end and something else decides to use the
network heavily or there are a number of devices on the Homeplug
network, throughput to the SB could suffer.

I think I've found out why the music does not start. It is because, when
entering that address in the address bar and clicking on GO, it does not go
to that address directly but to a different address:
http://media.fastclick.net/w/get.media?sid=22900&m=5&tp=6&url=http%
3A//1.fm/Stations/Baroque/Listen.aspx%3Fpidx%3D0
This is to entice you to visit the sponsor. To reach the music you must click
on "SKIP", and then you are taken to the correct address and the music starts
automatically.
Since the SQUEEZEBOX cannot see the "SKIP" notification and get out of it, it
gets stuck there.

Is there a way I can program the address(URL)so it will go directly to the
music URL and star playing the music immediately?

Many thanks.

[slim] Slimserver 6.5 MySQL Requirement - Bad!

2006-10-07 Thread mwatkins

I'm a long time slimserver user with an original squeezebox. Today I
started to upgrade from 6.3.x to 6.5.x, only to note in the Makefile
(FreeBSD ports) that MySQL is now a requirement.

Some mistake, I thought, it must be! But apparently not... although if
someone can assure me that 6.5 and above will NOT require MySQL, that
would be a big win.

Assuming that the developers indeed have made a dreadful mistake and
made MySQL a requirement, I'd like to know... WHY?

The data model and processing requirements for a tool like Slimserver
do not outgrow the abilities of so-called 'embeddable' databases such
as sqlite. Convince me otherwise, if you can.

In my professional capacity I have shunned MySQL for years, but I'd be
willing to rant on about this requirement even if the developers had
standardized on a database engine which I prefer (Postgres, even Oracle
or SQL Server). Including yet another big chunk of software raises other
issues of security, compatibility and upgrades; yet another process on
the box; another thing to manage and potentially backup.

So my question is... why?

Could i scan the new folders one by one instead of scanning the whole
library ?

a) new album dropped (L:\new music\Jack Costanzo\Latin Fever)
b) scheduled script notice the new album
c) moves the file to the library (L:\library\Jack Costanzo\Latin

d) and starts "c:\Program Files\SlimServer\server\scanner" --rescan
"L:\library\Jack Costanzo\Latin Fever"

I guess I could have tried instead of asking... :)

[slim] Re: Squeezebox and Infrant ReadyNAS NV

2006-10-07 Thread benjaminfry

I have slimserver running now on Infrant NAS NV. It has been rather
dissapointing with a 350GB mp3 database but at least now my data is
safe.

I have updated to the latest beta firmware to get the latest slim
server. this helps a bit. i have also ordered a 1GB memory module to
speed it up to hopefully a usable speed. (I do think this should be
made more clear when promoting the system.)

My last problem is that i used to use the automatic link of MoodLogic
playlists when the server ran on my pc (with MoodLogic installed). On
the NAS the MoodLogic option does not come up sinc it is not running
the programme. Can i get the server to recognise my MoodLogic database
and import the automatic playlists? Or can i export them permenantly
from ML? Has anyone successfully crossed this bridge?

Thanks.

[slim] Re: How do you categorize your music?

2006-10-07 Thread ceejay

Well, I haven't got any, but if I did I'm sure I'd categorize it as
"Classical;20thC". I can see that AvantGarde might be a useful value
if I had much of that sort of thing.

The distinction between Classical and non-classical is *mostly*
clear... and isn't, in my mind at least, just a question of period. I
mainly struggle when it comes to modern choral works such as those of
Richard Allain.

But at least the benefit of multi-value genre tagging is that you don't
have to worry for long - if in doubt just give it multiple values and
let it go!

[slim] SS 6.5.1 syncing radio streams

I'm now using SlimServer Version: 6.5.1 - 10260 - Linux - EN -

Everything seem to work fine except for syncronising radio streams.

With SS 6.3.1 and older versions it was no problem syncing 3 SBs.

But after upgrading syncing is very poor.

Did version 6.5 include a new way to sync sound or is this just a bug?

So a Mozart symphony would be "classical;classicalperiod;symphony" and
I can browse under any of those genres and find it. Or a Milhaud sonata

What do you do with Philip Glass? His work is currently tagged
"Classical;Avant Garde" in my collection (mostly -- the Low and 'Heroes'

"...;Soundtrack"), but it just feels weird tagging music composed in my
lifetime as "classical". Is there another word for describing serious

[slim] Re: Tag problems with 6.5.0

2006-10-07 Thread mattnadler

I've also had significiant problems with albums that are tagged well
enough for iTunes and Windows Media player, but don't show up in the
Slim Server except by song name but No Artist, no Album. This was not
an issue with the previous implementation of Slimserver.

Since iTunes organizes the files with their names, Slimserver can
figure out the song name based on the file, but it has none of the more
detailed tag info.

This is the case on my Windows XP box, but when I use the exact same
files (on an external drive) on my Macintosh, Simserver works as
intended. I therefore think there's a problem in the Windows
implementation that's not present in the Mac version.

Most of my MP3's were all ripped on a Mac using a LAME encoder. Why
some of these work on the PC, and other's don't is beyond me.

One thing I've noted is that lost MP3 tag info happens more with albums
that have multiple disks. I have a habit of identifying the disk in a
series in the tags, (e.g. 1 of 2), but I also include that information
in the album title (e.g. "Physical Graffiti (1/2)" which gets
translated in the file folder structure to "Physical Graffiti 1_2"

I also took a look at the ID3 tags, they are v2.2 or v2.3. DB Power
Amp sees the tag info as well and I don't have multiple tag versions in
the files like other people have mentioned.

There was bug (and I think it is still open) about jerkiness of the freq

from the sound issue.

Some plugins and other issues can interfewre with smooth running of SS.
The network health monitor can sometimes show what is happening.

What plugins have you installed ?

I use Apple lossless on my ancient PowerMac (500Mhz) and it runs fine,
so have you checked that your iTunes and QuickTime are in sync? Have
you tried upgrading to the latest version?

That aside, do you have any other wireless devices or microwave ovens,
DECT phones that might be causing a problem?

Yes.

For new rips of classical music, this is a tiny overhead given the
amount of time I take to get the rest of the tags right!

For each piece (or for a whole CD if all the pieces are similar) simply
select the tracks in mp3tag and type in a genre string. Done!

My record so far, I think, is 6 values on one piece...

Of course, I'd already ripped most of my music when I decided to go
down this route so I did have to retrofit it. It wasn't as bad as you
might think: mp3tag will allow you select whole chunks of tracks so you
can do them in big batches. And the ones where I had to stop and think
about it were very interesting: I found myself listening to bits of
tracks I hadn't heard for ages, and looking up composers and pieces in
wiki or allmusic.com for more information. It took a weekend and was
worth every minute!

Oh, oh, oh. That makes a lot more sense. [Mark that the second

I've given some thought to multi-tagging genres. I've certainly
done a few hundred artists that way, but have been reluctant
to learn of some unintended consequence and my wife isn't happy
with how much time I've spent tagging already (>20K tracks).

Indeed. The thing I'm always afraid of is feeling like I want
to hear, say, some jazz and I miss seeing Jonas Hellborg or John
McGlaughlin thing because I sub-categorized it poorly. Using
multi-tags would work. OK, John Coltrane is 'jazz' with every
not he ever played...but maybe Sonny Sharrock isn't.

there Kronos Quartet albums, for example, that might need a

I'm sorry, I now realize that you are referring to the WWW

were actually appearing on the Squeezebox itself.

If this is really a problem for you, perhaps there's a way using
permissions or filenaming that would allow you to keep the

It does, but only (AFAIK) if you are prepared to hard-wire the browse

is a step forward, but not the fully flexible solution I'd really

[slim] SlimServer Command Interface?

2006-10-07 Thread Niss

To hibernate my PC running SlimServer, and save power when no Squeezebox
is using it, I would like to write a script that checks periodically
then hibernates the machine if no activity for a set length of time.
(Running on Linux Fedora Core 5.)

Hibernate from command line works fine using Suspend2, and the
squeezebox wakes the PC up (Wake on LAN) from hibernate when turned on
by the remote. But what I am lacking is a way that I can check from a
bash script whether any player is using the squeezebox -- is there any
command interface to Slimserver?

Would appreciate any information or advice.

Since the scanner now exists as a separate program, you could *very*
easily write your own script to do something like this.

Or do what I've done: I already had scripts to manage the
copying/placing of files in the right places on my server, I just added
the line

"c:\Program Files\SlimServer\server\scanner" --rescan
g:\libraries\slim

at the end.

Yes, I do know its scanning the whole library, but it only takes 10
minutes [YMMV !!!]

Interesting, thats not the behaviour I'm seeing. If I search on Elton
John I get to a list of albums, which includes both the sole-artist
albums and the compilation albums on which he appears.

Which I think is the behaviour you want?

So, which version of slimserver are you using? What settings do you
have for compilation albums?

You might want to try upgrading to 6.5.1 nightly and rescanning as
there have been some changes...

thats the whole point - neither takes precedence, I use multiple
values.

So ALL of my classical music gets the tag "classical". It also gets
one of "baroque", "classicalperiod", "romantic", "20thC".

Except sometimes for crossover work when it might get two of those.

Then its likely to get tagged as one of "symphony", "concerto",
"choral" or "chamber".

So a Mozart symphony would be "classical;classicalperiod;symphony" and
I can browse under any of those genres and find it. Or a Milhaud sonata
might be "classical;20thC;chamber;woodwind".

The important thing for me was to think about how I want to choose
music. Obviously if you know what you want to listen to, you just
search for it and play it. But often I don't know - but I do feel like
listening to something like... a symphony, or choral, or baroque, or
piano. This system lets me do that.

Personally I find this works very well, as I get a relatively short
list of genres when browsing, but without being constrained by a
restrictive classification system YMMV!

Ideally, of course, I'd like to be able to do a cascaded browse so that
having selected "symphony" I could then further browse by period (or
conductor, or whatever)... this is the subject of an enhancement
request!
