>From what I've read in the posts, all of which made perfect sense, and from what I personally believe, the contract of physical music purchase of a CD (or DVD or any recorded work on a digital medium) exists with you and your possession of the physical goods and any receipt of purchase. Any copy you make is subject to copyright laws applicable to your region (Law). If you have purchased something, it's yours(Law). If you copied something and then had the original stolen and it was insured, then once you replace that purchase, through again a lawful purchase, it's yours again(Law), and the copy is subject to the same copyright laws as before(Law), except that now it's not a copy of what you had previously purchasedThat's getting sticky - any lawyer want to step in here, go ahead, but I'd suggest that you shouldn't have that copy in your possession(Ethics). If you copy it and then sell it or give it away, you're a thief(Law). So, ethics really don't come into it very much, it's just a matter of intrinsically knowing when you have the right to something and when you don't, and generally the law, through precedent or process, is pretty clear on that. -- peejay After Silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music - Aldous Huxley. peejay's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7046 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=29003 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I still think there's a twist, and it's in the insurance bit. I think that insurance compensates you for a loss; it does not oblige you to repurchase a product. Your car gets pinched, and you decide that a car is more hassle than it's worth - a UK-only perspective ;) - the insurance company still has to cough up. In the case of CDs, you have had a loss of the physical CDs, but you have not lost the right to play them. How you (and the loss adjuster) value that loss is a matter between you and the insurance company. Hence my earlier post stating that this might be an insurance fraud issue. There is an ethical issue too - should you rebuy? [slim] Halloween stunts
I've been thinking of putting a SB and speakers on the roof above the front door for Halloween. I would control it with a laptop. Lots of possibilities there - using scary music, scary sound effects, or even recording some of my own sound bites to play at appropriate times. Funny story - about 15 years ago I lived alone and worked the graveyard shift. This meant I slept during the day and usually woke up around 6 PM. Well, I woke up one day to a knock on the door, went groggily out to answer it, then realized it was kids trick-or-treating and I had bought no treats! So I just didn't answer the door. I thought about ways of discouraging kids from coming to the house. I killed all the lights, opened some windows, put on dome darkly ambient music, and CRANKED it up - I believe I used parts of Eno's "Ambient 4 - On Land" and Jon Hassell's "The Surgeon Of The Nightsky Restores Dead Things With The Power Of Sound". I crouched under the window to observe the effect it was having. Kids were actually crossing the street to get further away from the house, and looking back with trepidation. Parents were ushering kids quickly past. I laughed evilly and went back to bed. No candy was given out, and I didn't even get egged or TP'ed. -- Pale Blue Ego Pale Blue Ego's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=110 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=29073 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I wholeheartedly agree. Music is not cheap to produce; much of the best music is not commercial (e.g. BBC Radio 3) and may well not be able to pay for itself. Starting a band costs a fortune in promotion, as well as recording costs. How on earth can the $10 CD price not be justified? If you play it ten times, that's a dollar for an hour's entertainment. I have CDs that I have played hundreds of times; I can't think of anything that is better value (DVDs I pay $20 for and play once? No thanks!) I agree that it may increase the record companies' bottom lines if they reduced prices - their unit sales might increase dramatically. However, such a strategy is very risky - once you do it, there's no going back. Blue paints the music industry as suited thugs; I've met a lot of people in music, and none of them were thugs (some *were* suited!). Most of them are great people who love music, and would love to find a solution to the current problem. There may be a few very big players who are doing well, but must of the guys I know are much smaller; they're struggling and get really upset when they see their artists, on whom they have spent a huge amount both financially and emotionally, getting pirated. They can't invest in new music if they don't make profits from their existing ones. [slim] So Farewell Then, Slim Devices
If Logitech's Harmony remote 'software' is anything to go by, it's going to be an ignominous end for Slim Devices products. >From a professional developer's perspective, it has to rate as the most user-hostile software I've ever encountered from a consumer electronic device. SlimServer is a model of clarity and usability in comparison. On a more personal note, being the proud owner of a SB3, I love showing off my niche audio product. If it had 'Logitech' plastered all over it (or even discreetly hidden on the back) it becomes more akin to a 30 bucks webcam. I would not have bought a Logitech SB3. Logitech make mice (and deeply cr*p remotes) and I would not dream of having any Logitech equipment near my stereo. But still, good luck to the SD team - I'd take the money and run too. You can hear the sound coming out of the box when it's sitting on the shelf at Wal-Mart? I hate to admit it, but I too would never have considered a Squeezebox several years ago if it carried a Logitech brand. If the next generation Squeezebox is very high quality, but rebranded with the Logitech logo, I'd purchase it only knowing that it's really a Slim Devices product underneath. Certainly not the other way around. We're not talking about the logo, but the perception of the company behind that logo. My impression of Logitech is that they make very nice $30 mice. Why do you think they would do those things when it would likely result in far fewer sales? Presumably they purchased SD based on their audiophile reputation. The point to me is that we all know Slim and it has an certain reputation for high quality sound, but is a bit of a geeky product. LogiTech have another brand image, which is for PC products and some people have good experience of them. We're in the know and we can make wise choices. I bought my device after a lot of research and steered clear of PC solutions - I wanted an audiophile product from a dedicated HiFi specialist, not a global electronics giant with different criteria for success. Now if I'm an audiophile completely new to networked audio and walk into a store and see a LogiTech product and a Sonos product, I may think "LogiTech do PC peripherals and PC sound is generally awful, so I think I'll take a look at this Sonos (or Sooloos) product, whoever they are". It may not be fair, but we are loaded with preconceptions about products based on brand and appearance. This often steers purchases towards the familiar and safe option. Slim built up a reputation, changing to LogiTech could throw that away. -- CardinalFang CardinalFang's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=962 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=29081 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I really don't get why everybody is happily giving their money to allofmp3.com. The way I see it, is you're using their services, one of the following applies to you: 1. You want DRM-free music, and you want to obtain it legally. Go buy your music somewhere else. Allofmp3 is clearly not legit. And no, offering pocket change to record companies does not make you legit. If someone offers you $100 for you Squeezebox, does it give them the right to buy it from you? 2. You want DRM-free music and want to send out a signal to the other stores/record companies. Why not buy at a proper DRM-free online music store? I have mentioned http://www.emusic.com and http://www.bleep.com before. 3. You want cheap music. You have to wonder how cheap legit music can really be (see the post's above). Still, cheaper stores than iTunes can be found. Again, eMusic comes to mind. Really, using allofmp3 is no better or worse than using a P2P-client, and it costs money, too! [slim] Re: So Farewell Then, Slim Devices
I disagree with the statement that Logitech will ruin Slimdevices. In fact the evidence seems to indicate just the opposite. I was an early adopter of the Harmony product (before their acquisition by Logitech). I thought it was the best universal remote on the market and the software capability (state memory, web programming, Mac compatibility) were a perfect fit for me and my equipment (despite being a small unknown Canadian company). The first new Harmony product after the Logitech acquisition was the 880 which I upgraded to and I like even more. It retained compatibility with my existing equipment and had better ergonomics, a color LCD and rechargeable batteries. The new 1000 looks even more interesting. I don't know if any of this was Logitech's design influence or if it was their ability to stay out of the way of a good engineering team but I don't care. All I know is I have a quality product that does the job. I have never had a problem with the Harmony software and don't consider it to be inferior in any way. I am also an early adopter of Slimdevices products (hand built Squeezebox, SB2, 2xSB3) and I am *very* satisfied with the product and the software. Given my experience with what happened after Logitech acquired Harmony I am enthusiastic about the future of Slimdevices. Normally I wouldn't bother replying as everyone is entitled to their opinion but I just felt that the overall tone of the message board since the news of the acquisition has been negative. I wish Slimdevices (and Logitech) much success in their new relationship. -- jbuccino jbuccino's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1096 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=29081 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Sigh ... I promised myself I was going to stay out of the "is the acquisition good or bad" discussion, but I just can't resist. I am not an audiophile, but I have a fairly extensive CD collection (800 of them), a decent amp and speakers, and 4 Squeezeboxes. When I decided to rip all my CDs and go digital, I hemmed and hawed for months over the Roku or Squeezebox decision (not to mention, all the other lower priced options on the market), primarily because I could see the Roku on the shelf at Best Buy and Circuit City, but had no idea who this "Slim Devices" company was. Just seeing the device in a store increased my confidence (silly, but true). I even considered buying a Roku but powering it with SlimRoku! I am VERY glad that I made the RIGHT decision and chose the Squeezebox ... but I think I would have made the decision much quicker if the device had some name-recognition ... and I bet there are a lot of others like me. Buying a $300 device online from a company I had never heard of was not very comfortable. In short, I believe that the Logitech acquisition will open up new markets for the Squeezebox ... and that is a good thing for all of us. P.S. What finally convinced me to go with the Squeezebox was the Slim Devices Community Forums :-) -- Jon Jon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2848 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=29081 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

The ethical issue is clear - AllOfMP3 pays no money to artists, so is just plain wrong. To use your tax analogy, it's like setting up a complex offshore scheme solely for the purpose of avoiding tax: it's just wrong. In the UK, our government has put in systems to make offshore tax avoidance much more difficult, and I approve wholeheartedly. Stretching the analogy, tax is good because it pays for many vital services. You may not like how much you pay, or how the government spends it, but it's a better thing to live in a tax-based society than in an anarchy. Paying for music (to the musicians!) is the same - you may not like the RIAA, BPI and their tactics, but you need to pay for it or the music will stop. -- adamslim SB3 and Shanling CDT-100, Rotel RT-990BX, Esoteric Audio Research 859, Living Voice Auditorium IIs, Nordost cables adamslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7355 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28858 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Dagordon, you're right that allofmp3 does give you something the others don't. Properly ripped FLACs are indeed nice. That makes it equivalent to a really nice P2P service! ;) To be clear, I'm not an expert on legal issues. Therefore I can't tell you whether allofmp3 is breaking any applicable law. However, the fact that the musicians are not seeing any money gives some clue as to whether it is a 'proper' business model. For comparison, here in the Netherlands it is not illegal to download copyrighted material, only to upload it. Even so, that doesn't make it the right thing to do. [slim] Re: Wake-on-LAN: something new...?
I think this behaviour may be a bit more subtle than simply a timeout value. On my system it's dictated by the exact state of the SB when the server system drops into standby (S3 suspend in my case). 1) If the SB is "off" (which on my device I have set to "blank" screensaver) when the Slimserver drops into standby, then turning the SB on again via the Power button on the remote will behave as per this thread. It cycles through "Waking Slimserver...", "Connecting to Slimserver..." and then reverts to a blank screen, after which you need to retry the Power button to activate. 2) If the SB is "on" (which I have set to a clock screensaver) and I then force the SS system into standby, the SB will drop back to "blank" - re-waking the SB after any period will then go back through Waking / Connecting but now it will re-connnect and return to a "clock" state. So I think that the SB may be simply reverting to its logical state when the system entered standby, rather than failing to connect. This may not be true in all cases, but it would certainly be welcome if re-awakening forced the SB into a logical "on" state rather than requiring the Power button to do this - although I can see that this may be quite tough to achieve. I agree totally with jbuccino. Anyone remember the Harmony remotes before the Logitech acquisition? Wich is the direction: better look, new functions, a developing software (Yes, far from being at the best), new products (the 1000) and a relatively lower price (do You know the price of Philips Pronto?!). smc2911: In my opinion (having used the software both before and after the acquisition) the Harmony software is essentially unchanged. The one major improvement is the web access time - after the acquisition the access was much faster. Before the acquisition it was often unusable. The only disappointment I have (since the acquisition) is that the Macintosh software has trailed the PC software by a significant amount. This is the issue that is causing me to keep my eyes open for an alternate solution. -- jbuccino jbuccino's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1096 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=29081 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

If I use GPL header files and libraries in code I wrote, and then compile it, the resulting binary must be distributed under a GPL compatible license. That's pretty sensible, though: the resulting binary is not entirely your own work--it is work that partially includes/is derived from the libraries. If you want to distribute only the source code you wrote, you can do this under any license you like. But you can't take someone else's work (the library bits) and distribute it or your derivative under your choice of licenses. Jeff, if you took this case pro bono, I'd recommend settling out of court. You will lose. If you have a program that is either entirely your own work or is based on more permissive licenses for the libraries, you can also "link" it to GPL software through sockets and pipes, etc. Of course you can distribute that binary however you see fit (assuming your libraries allow it). The GPL simply does not jump out of one program and enter another all on its own. It's not any more viral than any other license. The author of the "infected" code must intentionally inject GPL code into their program (i.e. agree to the license, and then violate it). It's worth mentioning that you'd also get sued into oblivion if you redistributed Microsoft's software as part of your own software without a license. The only difference is that it's logistically easier to improperly create a derivative work from GPL software than it is to "accidentally" release an operating system that looks a lot like Windows XP except with a few tweaks here and there. "But the source code was a free download" is no excuse for violating a license, whatever the license. -- CatBus CatBus's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7461 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28873 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

One problem is losing the interest from enthusiast, who wanted to contribute to a small specialized company, but are unlikely to feel the same way now. Another is how a search for "synergy" (or cost cutting) can rip the heart and soul out of a product and make it another also-run. Standardisation can do the same damage. A third is "managing the manager" (if he stays on -if not, even worse). A fourth might be about openness, lawyers, quarterly reports, etc, etc. I don't know it all, but I suspect it will matter. It will probably also damage any high-end aspirations in the audiophile arena. Logitech, as far as I know, has no credentials in high-end audio. Associations will instead be with computer peripherals. Let's face it, there is some mystique with a small company battling it out with the big ones, doing it their own way. I see all of this disappearing. It comes down to vested interests, and brand loyalty, and it might not be the same now. The thing is that the sort of audiophile who hangs out at headfi is a lot more like the target audience, in all likelihood. That demographic has the advantage of actually growing, rather than shrinking (literally dying out). Others have pointed out on other threads that, for these kinds of (mostly younger) hobbyists, some of the high end stuff is kind of a joke, and there's a lot less emphasis on how expensive/cool looking/exclusive/whatever the gear is, and a lot more on how it sounds.
