[slim] NAS recommendations/Mac Mini

2007-03-28 Thread Simon Still

My server PC has died so i'm thinking of taking a different approach - a mac
mini in the kitchen (with EyeTV) as a media hub and an NAS to give me
properly resilient storage.

Any recommendations or advice? I've not owned or used a mac regularly for
many years.

Also, which NAS should I look at and how easy is it to install slimserver on
one? Any disadvantages - slower? harder to upgrade? (my linux knowledge
is minimimal - i suspect i'd have to follow a detailed script to get it
installed.

Re: [slim] Digital recording

2007-03-28 Thread ceejay

If you have used the analog outs from the SB into your device (sorry,
never heard of it) then any level compatibility is purely a matter of
chance.

If you are using the digital SPDIF out from the SB into a corresponding
digital input on your device, then there is no chance involved, you are
getting a straight digital transfer.

My guess from your other comments, though, is that you are using an
analog transfer. Be aware that you are heading for some very low sound
quality if you start off with a low-quality source like 128kbps: the
sound will have been compressed once to get to that level, then the SB
will be uncompressing it to give you an analog signal, then your device
will be compressing it again. This will nearly always give bad results.
There is no significance to the exact bit rate you compress to.

Does this device not have the ability to transfer mp3 files directly?

This sounds like a good request, if not 20 seconds perhaps 15. Since
it's an option, users would set it higher than 10 at their own risk.
More choices are good.

Also, check out my recent fade suggestion, and please vote there if you

Why not try it, then? If it fixes your problems, you'll be happy. If
it doesn't you'll be able to provide helpful info to the devs so they
can try to fix it (especially important if they *think* they've fixed

And if it really doesn't work at all you can always go back...

Ah, thanks James. Now I look again at your plugin site, I think it was
the big red WINDOWS ONLY that confused me, but now I see that refers to

But is 'iTunes Update' what I want? Does this move the Party Shuffle

Re: [slim] Using a Forum for RD--Fast Company Article

2007-03-28 Thread Kyle

First of all, I commend you on the innovative approach of reading about
this forum and then posting your question here. That said, I wonder
how much a music/software-oriented community can assist in the design
of a building for ice-oriented sports. Have you also posted on forums
dealing with skating sports? There is a big difference in the type of
dialog that takes place here on a fluid bit of software to run a slim
device and the type of design work on bricks and mortar that you are
talking about. Skunk is definitely correct in that sound systems, and
music in particular, have become an integral part of the sports
experience, so I would definitely concentrate on that aspect of your
design. As for video, the bigger the better for your main screens
(sounds like you'll need several in a building that size), but the best
sports venues that I have been in keep the action in front of you
whether you are in the concession area, the concourse or the bathroom.
So plan on smaller flat-panels in as many locations as you can afford.
Good luck.

Re: [slim] Best Mac random-songs route?

2007-03-28 Thread James

iTunes Update iTunes Party Shuffle plugins work best together!
iTunes Update sets the play counts etc which can then feed into the
Party Shuffle playlist. The Party Shuffle plugin then becomes useful
because it makes you no longer dependent on the SlimServer library
rescan updating SlimServer's snapshot of the iTunes playlists.

Although I can only guarantee the PS plugin works on Windows, there's
no real reason it wouldn't work on the Mac. As ever, I need a bit of
help testing it, in particular the bit that deletes tracks from the
party shuffle playlist.

[slim] Adding another hard drive

Re: [slim] Apple TV Competition?

2007-03-28 Thread gsalton

So, now that the Apple TV is out, what do people think?

My read (not having tried it yet) is that I would go with the AppleTV
over a squeezebox, as much as I love the one I have, for the ease of
use and (even limited) video/photo capabilities. For $50 more, and the
ease of use, it seems to me a pretty easy choice for most. Particularly
since it has a hard drive inside, meaning no need to keep another server
on all the time (although we will all complain about the size of the
drive, at least some of the library would be accessible).
Buffering/storage should mean that 90% of the stuttering music issues
would go away.

There will invariably some who want particular features of Squeezebox,
open source, or whatever, but the little oddities of my squeezebox have
eaten up a lot of my time. For example, due to an issue with certain
foreign language characters, 30% of my music library couldn't be used
until I spent hours fiddling. And don't get me started on tagging -
doesn't matter whose software caused the problems, this was another
massive time suck. Sticking with iTunes would have been much easier.

Please, this is not a troll or attempt to start a flamewar. But for me,
for the money and ease of use, the current squeezebox is looking long in
the tooth compared to the Apple TV. And I suspect for any consumer even
slightly less inclined to spend money fiddling than I have been, it is
not even a question that they won't bother with the effort.

2007-03-28 Thread bklaas

to each their own, but there is a substantial number of squeezebox
owners that don't have (nor want) a TV in the room they listen to
music. I am one of them.

AppleTV has lots of competition (for example,
http://www.ehomeupgrade.com/entry/3690/mvix_mx-760hd_vs), but not the
squeezebox. Beyond being media streamers, they fill fairly different
niches.

The thing that gets under my skin about Apple is they put things in a
pretty package with a bow on it and all of a sudden everyone thinks
they were the forerunners of that particular technology. Sure, they are
design and marketing gods, but most people with brains can see past
that. But it's not any of that which keeps me away from Apple--it's the
way they've used proprietary DRM to monopolize a market. AppleTV will
have the same baggage. That's a capital offense, in my book.

Yeah, but they make that box with a pretty package work so well. Same
with the ipod - it's not technically superior, but it works much more
simply.

And one question about this that I've never understood: what's the
problem with the DRM? If you don't buy music from them, you can keep it
in any format supported, including MP3 and AIFF (non-apple formats). And
if you're willing to spend the time, keep copies at the same time in any
other format you like.

I personally have a handful of files bought from iTunes store. Probably
wouldn't do it again, but that was a known limitation when I bought
them, and why I buy all my music elsewhere.

Good points. Apple's done well for a reason. As for me, I just don't
like itunes. I've never really managed to figure it out. Also, I
fundamentally don't trust Apple. I don't think they're the devil, but
when it comes down to buying gear for myself I'd rather have something
more flexible that meets my needs precisely. And I kind of like having
something that's a bit different :).

[slim] Need help streaming from a site

2007-03-28 Thread venus light

Thanks for all the info yall provide on a regular basis. I'm trying to
figure out how to stream from the site: www.panicstream.com

They provide lots of streams from their site - they use flash players
embedded in pages.

http://panicstream.com/streams/wsp/
^-that is a directory of a bunch of streams of different concerts -
each directory has it's own songlist.xml file.

http://panicstream.com/streams/wsp/2007_03_27/player.html
^- that is a page that contains the player for a specific stream.

I would love to be able to browse through all of the folders on my SB,
but would settle for being able to enter a different url for each
concert and being able to stream it that way.

If anyone can provide any help, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

The best consumer products rarely break new ground with internals, they
are dependant on using tried and trusted technology for cost and
reliability reasons. Where Apple always score is usability - their
stuff just works and is really nice to look at. Slim works well too,
mostly, but the interface is obtuse and clunky in comparison if you are
Joe User and not an audiophile geek.

As for DRM, I have bought music from iTunes, but since I can also burn
to CD, I could then re-rip the tunes and bypass the initial DRM. As it
happens I only buy iTunes music for my iPod, not my stereo, so it's not
really an issue and I don't bother.

from the start of the file, instead of the start of the track.

Re: [slim] Digital recording

2007-03-28 Thread NauticusLX

Yes, I do have to turn the volume up a bit more than usual, after
recording as I described in my initial post, but besides that, the
sound quality is great (sound quality is always a subjective matter).
But I hadn't thought of using the digital optical output! I forgot it
had one. But the line-in jack in the recording device is analog (I
think), so does that make it impossible to make a digital, real-time
recording? Are there cables that have one end digital and the other
end analog? A thought that occurred to me after my inital post was, is
the term recording level irrelevant to the digital signal? Or is
bit-rate the only property of the digital signal that is relevant?
Maybe that's why there's no recording level control in the Pogo DAP
(digital audio player), because the makers asssumed the incoming
signal, during recording, would be digital.

Before I bought a SB, I had mpd (music player daemon) installed on a
linux box with a soundcard. I controlled it with a web front end
called phpMp, which had a clickable progress bar, which enabled you to
go to any point in the track that was playing. For a screenshot see

I'd love to be able to do this with Slimserver.

I know about the Song Scanner plugin, and it works really well, but I'd

[slim] search on NAS-based slimserver

2007-03-28 Thread eblantz

i recently upgraded to an infrant readynas that came bundled with
slimserver. I finally got all my music copied over from a quickly
failing HD and MOST of my music now shows and plays. unfortunately,
whereas when i ran the server on my pc I used to be able to search for
music and browse directories (etc.) fairly quickly using the web
interface, the new setup is pathetically. simple searches take many
minutes and the server often stalls out. this is true whether i'm
connected wirelessly or over 100 mbps ethernet. interestingly, the
squeezebox interface works ok. Any ideas??

Thanks in advance,

Re: [slim] search on NAS-based slimserver

2007-03-28 Thread sander

Well, I think you experience is fairly typical on the ReadyNas. The
interface is great via the device, but lacking via the NAS. From what
I've seen the Thecus is the only NAS that's sufficiently fast enough
CPU-wise, but that and all the others are lacking in RAM.

The only solution is to move it the actual SlimServer to another box or
buy some theoretically faster NAS in the future.

Slim and ReadyNas are both working on performance, but the reality is,
from what I understand, that the ReadyNas CPU doesn't have floating
point instructions which is crucial for certain elements of the
SlimServer.

[slim] iTunes, Sound Check and Volume Adjustment.

2007-03-28 Thread mcslim

When I imported 5600 songs into iTunes, a volume adjustment called
Sound Check was added top each track. Unfortunately, playback with
Sound Check enabled sounds like crap. Even if I disable Sound Check
in iTunes, SB still adjusts its own playback if Volume
Adjustment/Replay Gain is chosen in the player settings.

So, why don't I just not enable Volume Adjustment/Replay Gain? Well,
because I want to to take advantage of the manual adjustment I make in
iTunes with the volume slider.

As far as I know, you cannot strip the Sound Check volume adjustment
from songs.

So, is there any wayu that SB can differentiate between the two volume
adjustments? Paying attenion to either the manual slider or the Sound
Check adjustment?

Many many thanks.

Re: [slim] Logitech Branding

2007-03-28 Thread Michael Herger
 This attitude can be problematic.

Especially if you pick my phrase out of it's context. _Anybody_ would
agree that you'd better stay away from a forum if the change of its logo
makes you suicidal. Don't you agree?

I can see some twenty-three year old know-it-all journalist
proclaiming that the forums are a bit geeky and therefore the product
itself is assumed to be suspect.

If the 23year old journalist doesn't even read what he's writing about,
his career won't last for long ;-)
