Funny you mention it - just happened to me in the middle of a playlist between songs, where I got random scratching sounds. It had never happened before, and it didn't reappear as I played the same two song sequence. Perhaps that random cosmic ray effect we joked about a while ago does indeed rear its head on occasion, and we had high cosmic ray exposure today on both our SB3. :-) Hope your problem disappeared and stays the random 2 year occurrance it's been on my setup as of today. -- pablolie pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40565 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Slimserver Problems running on Windows Vista
Hi, I am also having problems since installing 6.5.4 on a previously stable 6.5.3 vista install. Slimserver starts fine and runs in the background OK - my 3 squeezboxes run fine on a wireless G network, but when i open slimserver in internet explorer 7, it freezes the first time it 'refreshes' the screen. the only solution is to close internet explorer and restart - but the same thing happens each time. I am running alien BBC (which still works fine on the squeezboxes). I have uninstalled slimserver and re-installed. same problem. I thought the problem was having added XM radio plugin - but having removed this an reinstalled - same problem. Windows firewall is disabled - i use Norton 360 (a useless piece of crap - avoid if you can), but firewall is not an issue. the remote squeezeboxes run fine throughout any internet explorere freeze - and are accessing music off my infrant readyNAS without problem. I'm not running slimserver on the NAS - so it is the PC slimserver that is supporting. Appears to be an Internet explorer / slimserver problem. thanks Tom -- tomlillie tomlillie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1347 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=32578 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Squeezebox stopping
I hope this helps... but I just started developing this same issue over the weekend. The squeezebox would all of a sudden stop playing right in the middle of a shuffled selection of MP3s or internet radio. Sometimes the squeezebox would continue playing, but the display would go completely black. I hit the power button, and it would say "Waking Up SlimServer"... and it'd start working again. Other times, the unit would just shut off and stop playing immediately eventhough there was a full buffer of music. Other times, it would continue playing as the buffer slowly but surely depleted itself and stopped playing. I would need to physically hit the play button, and it would continue right away, where it left off. Then even other times, it would stop for 15-30secs (sometimes longer), then continue playing again by itself after a while. If I reset my wireless switch, things would start working again for a little while. This was starting to drive me nuts thinking either my wireless switch went bad, or that my squeezebox started going bad. I ended up determining that this was all actually due to an IP conflict on my network. Another workstation (which hadn't been on for about 2 years) was getting booted up and had the same static IP as my squeezebox. Once I set that machine to start using a different IP, I had absolutely no problems with the squeezebox any longer. Unfortunately, the squeezebox didn't display any sort of "ip address conflict" message -- that would have been very handy! :( I invite those of you who are experiencing this issue to make absolutely, doubly sure there aren't any IP address conflicts going on with your squeezebox, and make sure it's got a unique static IP... [slim] Squeeze Network, Internet Radio not working
Have purchased Squeezebox.v3 this past week. Just checked the Zyxel site and there is no mention of 11g on that model. While 11b has a theoretical max of 11Mb, it rarely delivers that. With two wifi hops, you have not much chance of it working reliably So I agree with BPA, get a better router. I just bought a Linksys WRT54GL which can be flashed with DD-WRT. It only costs $2 or so more than the base WRT54G, which is too limited to run good firmware. Are you referring to SlimServer (6.5.4) or SqueezeCenter (7.0)? SqueezeCenter does support drag n' drop for the default skin, SlimServer doesn't (except the SlimFX skin). If you're referring to dragging-and-dropping tracks from SS/SC to SoftSqueeze, that's not how it works and it will never work that way - in SS/SC you have to add tracks to the playlist on the right (which you can drag n' drop in SC7). -- Mark Lanctot Mark Lanctot's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2071 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40524 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

If there was an error in FLAC playback that wouldn't be the end of the world either I've chosen MP3 as my format because it is indistinguishable to my ears and I like the portability to my iPod and Car player, but I would rather it not be *further* degraded. The fact is that these are not inexpensive, disposable devices and it's reasonable to assume that the playback of MP3's (which is not some sort of black magic art, unlike the *encoding* of MP3's) is as good as it can be given the hardware constraints. I'm glad to see Logitech taking this seriously, but I'm not surprised. This just further validates my personal decision to trust this company with my in-house music playback so many years ago. By fixing this, they will demonstrate yet again that they are not your typical consumer electronics comporation. I do find it slightly humorous that my two old SliMP3's *may* have more accurate MP3 playback support than my SB2 and my SB3. I'm not sure what some of the settings actually change so I'll do some searching. Changing "How much like the artist style" from 0 to 100 gave me a better mix but still strange selections. Servers are really meant to be wired. Really. If a wireless server works for you, great, but it's the exception, not the rule. Also the resources are not shared like servies describes (bandwidth/2), it depends on walls, interference and router efficiency at redirecting packets. Receiving and re-transmitting packets can introduce significant latency which will impact bandwidth. > Besides I have tried both the SB and my laptop installed at my friends > wlan and there was no problem at all. Each wireless location is different and each router performs differently. Perhaps there were less obstacles at your friends place, perhaps there were less competing networks, perhaps there was less interference, perhaps his router is more efficient than yours. Re: [slim] Squeezebox v3 spontaneously reboots
I had the same problem -- specifically with the same intermittent symptoms juck mentions in this thread (hissing, popping, bright light on display). I was running server 6.5.4, firmware 81, Intel Mac. I tried switching to 7.0a beta, 6.5.3, 6.5.2, and 6.5.1. I tried a wired connection. Nothing worked. Factory resets and a reset holding the "1" key didn't work either. My SB would always crash and reboot mid song within 10 minutes - then it would either continue where it left off or get stuck at the beginning of the song where it left off. I downloaded the 6.5.0 version with firmware v64 (pre Logitech) -- works like a charm! Something strange with a firmware change is clearly causing the issue. I still gotta say - MP3 is a "good enough" format. It's a "good enough" approximation to the original that as long as it sounds "good", it's "good enough" IMHO. And yes, the SB3 MP3 output is "good enough" to my ears. Sure if there are obvious errors they should be squashed (and they are being diligently looked at!) but put it into perspective - it isn't the end of the world. If you're really concerned about sound quality use lossless - it doesn't take any more effort than MP3 and drive space is cheap. The resulting files are analyzed by spectrum analyzer and presented as follows: green: (*1) original 16-bit wav file synthesized by soundforge violet: (*4) wav file obtained by compressing and decompressing using lame red: (*3) wav file digitally captured from squeezebox, playing mp3 The original file (green) is mathematically perfect, all "artefacts" are 16-bit rounding. The mp3 file (violet) is surprisingly good, looking almost the same as the original. That is probably because a high-bitrate mp3 is more than enough for a single sine signal. The file captured from squeeze (red) is some 20dB worse, clearly showing the artefacts. In the real situation, with a complex music file, the induced noise is probably much higher, although not so easy to demonstrate. Hope this may help to easier find and analyze the bug. +---+ |Filename: 1kHz -60dB spectrum.png | |Download: http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3758| +---+ -- damir damir's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14119 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40409 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Posible bug in built-in MP3 decoder - please verify
Here is a small listening test, similar to one that sikahr provided. I choose a five different music tracks, and provided a four different samples (*1 to *4) for each one: *1. The original wav file, ripped from 44100/16 audio cd, lowered 20dB. *2. Mp3 file encoded from sample *1, using lame --alt-preset extreme. *3. Wav file captured by playing sample *2, on the Squeezebox3 digital output. *4. Wav file directly decompressed from sample *2, using lame. Links are: Ain't No Sunshine http://www.mytempdir.com/2068113 Try a Little Tenderness http://www.mytempdir.com/2068118 Mozart Adagio http://www.mytempdir.com/2068126 Spanish Harlem http://www.mytempdir.com/2068132 The Gal From Joe's http://www.mytempdir.com/2068136 If you have a squeezebox (hardware), you'll probably want to compare samples *2 and *4. Having all other things the same, that will show difference in squeeze mp3 decoder. If you use softsqueeze (or any other PC player), you may compare samples *3 and *4. That may give you the pretty good idea how audible the effect is. -- damir damir's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14119 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40409 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Posible bug in built-in MP3 decoder - please verify
Hello everybody, This topic seems to deserve a bigger attention then it have. I downloaded test files, and can fully confirm all claims by sikahr - it seems there is a serious bug in Squezebox mp3 decoder. I also made some new tests, some analyze, and my conclusons are: 1. Effect is related to most common mp3 formats, not only a some strange cases Sikahr tested low-volume mono sine file and low-volume music, which may cause false idea that effect is related only to that specific cases. I made a new series of tests, with a normal music, 44100/16bit stereo, at the (almost) normal listening levels. Result is the same - squeeze decoder produces clearly audibile artefacts. More details in the following post. 2. Effect is not subtle As shown in my examples, the artefacts introduced by SqueezeBox are easily recognized after the music is lowered only 20dB from the normal level. It seems that the same thing is also audible at the normal listening level, but that should be additionally verified by a serious tests. My claim is, if it is easily recognizable at -20dB, then it may, at least occasionally, cause the audibile deterioration at the normal musical levels. 3. Effect is not a regular mp3 artefact 4. Effect is not caused by DAC or analog circutry Comparing mp3 (lame compressed from original cd) with wav (lame decompressed from the former mp3), it become obvious that quality deterioration was not the property of the compressed file, but the squeeze decompressing process. Actually, that may be the very reason why some people are using loseless instead of mp3. -- damir damir's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14119 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40409 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Noise when changing songs
Hi, I have two SB3, an older silver one and a new black faced one. The silver unit works fine, no issues. The black unit does have one issue - if I change songs, there is approximately half a second of noise. It almost sounds like scratching on a LP record. This noise only happens when I change songs. If I play a playlist or complete CD, I don't get the noise. Please advise. Re: [slim] MusicIP Usage
Thanks for the suggestions. Yes, the track analysis shows 0 on the MusicMagic API, it took about two days to go through the all the songs. I'm not sure what some of the settings actually change so I'll do some searching. Changing "How much like the artist style" from 0 to 100 gave me a better mix but still strange selections. Also, if I click on it with the same track, it gives different playlists when I would expect the selections to be the same. Has MusicIP completely gone through the process of analysing your tracks? (This process can take days depending on your library size and gruntiness of your PC.) You can also select parameters regarding how similar to the original track you want the playlist to be. Re: [slim] Where to buy in Canada
I will concede that I may be the luckiest shipper in the world. I have never had a problem with UPS. Canada Post on the other hand: No attempt to deliver/ falsified notices of delivery attempts, so I have to pick it up myself. No attempt to deliver/no falsified notification of attempt to deliver resulted in something being sent back to the US. Our local postal outlet dropped the franchise because they spent all their time handling parcels that the post office never attempted to deliver. The lineups got so bad that they where interfering with normal store traffic. The tracking for Canada Post/USPS is a joke, if the parcel tracks at all. Three weeks in customs versus three hours. etc. etc etc. As for the UPS Brokerage fee. If you don't ship ground then there is no brokerage fee. If Ground is your only choice, push the numbers and pick the supplier with the lowest all-in cost. If it's to my advantage, I use UPS ground. Still, one of the funniest threads I read a few years ago was some guy who was indignant about UPS, so he put the supplier through hoops to send it Fedex Ground. Had a good laugh about that one. One bit of advice. If you are dealing with a local dealer, make sure you negotiate. I did so on my Transporter and got a very good deal. -- riffer riffer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13459 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40499 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Where to buy in Canada
Umm, I'm not the poster you're responding to, but my experience with UPS has been absolutely horrible. No other shipper ever causes me problem (well, Canada Post has misdirected two items in 30 years, not bad for somebody who delivers five addressed items to me per business day). UPS has taken more than three months to deliver an item, has run over an item with a truck, has delivered my package to a random address in a different city, has tried to collect COD on item which was paid for, declared a computer printer "leather goods" to customs (leather has a high duty; computer equipment, none), and I found a $600 package of books left at the curb at the end of my dirveway, in the rain. They also delivered somebody else's package to my house once. Even when everything goes "right", UPS is generally slower than Canada Post. These are my personal experiences, out of less than 20 deliveries UPS has made to me. UPS Canada might not be Satan, but they are the most horribly incompetent company I have ever dealt with.I really have no use for a courier company which loses out to Canada Post in every category. I don't generally find it necessary to pay $70 to avoid UPS; you can almost always find a competitor willing to use the post office (cheaper, faster, and incredibly more reliable than UPS). For my Squeezebox, Kawartha sent it to me by Canada Post, no problem. All works well as long as we use static addresses, but after some time DHCP will not work beyond the bridge. Indeed after the group key renewal period. -- allisong allisong's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9226 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=39842 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Wireless Bridge DHCP Problems Solved?
I have the exact same problem when using WPA-2 and DHCP on the bridged Ethernet, all other security settings are OK. It is at the key refresh time the error occurs, after that the DHCP does not work beyond the bridge -- allisong allisong's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9226 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24537 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Mac Mini - going to sleep
My router is a Zoom ADSL X6 - I had wondered if maybe it was something to do with a setting on the router - though my PC which is connected to the same router does not have the switch off problem if I use it to run slimserver to feed the SB3. One thing I noticed yesterday was that if I have my PC on as well as the Mac Mini running slimserver then the SB3 doesn't seem to have the switch off problem. Maybe the PC is keeping the router awake? -- unclepuncle unclepuncle's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12511 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40226 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Low wireless throughput
One cause could be that you're using 2 wireless paths... laptop -> router and router -> SB3 That means that the 54Mb/s is already to be divided over 2 devices but 200kb/s is very low... -- servies There are 10 kinds of people in the world - those who understand binary and those who don't. servies's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9496 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40547 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Low wireless throughput
I really have a throughput problem. When my SB is connected to my WLAN network I only get a rate of about 200kbps. My setup is a laptop and the SB both connected to a wireless router.I have tried all available channels to exclude any interference issues from neighbours etc (Have only two neighbour wlan network), and even been standing about only 1 meter from my router with both laptop and SB to be sure to have a dominant signal. My laptop works all fine wireless and I have superb download speed on that and have no inteference problem. When I connect SB to my router by cable and my laptop still connected wireless it all works all fine with superb rate. I have tried my SB in my friends house with another router and there it worked all fine all wireless, so that should exlude that my SB is faulty. What could cause this? Could there be any wireless issues with my router? My router is a Zyxel ZyAir B-2000 v.2 with the latest firmware. I suspect it could be a router problem but I would not like to buy another before I wuite sure it's where the problem lies. And if the problem lies with my wireless router, what alternative router with good coverage could be recommended? -- Wicewolf Wicewolf's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14137 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40547 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Help restore my love of the Squeezebox
Stuttering with 75% signal is very wierd. I only have 20% signal and I can stream FLAC and even LPCM wihout a problem, so you should be fine with FLAC. If you play the FLAC files on your PC directly do they play fine? (i.e. make sure the problem isn't the source). Things to try .. make the buffer on the SB bigger so it will be less reliant on the wireless signal. Convert a FLAC file to WAV and stream native WAV (in server settings set it so that it doesn't convert WAV to anything) - this will check the ability of your wireless network to drive the load. Is there anything else in the house thats putting a load on your wireless network? Hope you get to the bottom of the problem, I've found my SB the salvation of my music collection! Re: [slim] radioio doesn't work
Just a 'me too' for this one. I can't get any Radioio playback through SlimServer -- it was fine several days ago, but now nothing on any channel. Nothing has changed on my config in the meantime and the streams are fine on a Terratec internet radio, so it's not an ISP issue. I am running Windows > Vista Home Premium It would be worth checking that the IDE disk is not running in PIO mode. Don't know exactly how you'd check this on Vista, but I suspect it will be similar to XP. Obviously there might be some differences in Vista, but the small experience I've had with it suggests to me that under the covers Vista is the same core as XP, and most of the administrative dialogs I've seen are basically the same. So: Bring up Device Manager, expand out the IDE/ATAPI controllers, and look at the properties of the appropriate controller (primary or secondary). On the Advanced Settings tab, make sure the transfer mode is set to "DMA if available" and the current transfer mode is some form of DMA rather than PIO. If you find you cannot get the disk out of PIO mode, try uninstalling the relevant controller driver and rebooting. This should reinstall the driver and reset it to DMA capability. -- cliveb Transporter -> ATC SCM100A cliveb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=348 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40536 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
