YES. The controller only talks to SqueezeCenter, which in turn controls the

I agree that we should be able to see these text files in the Browser

simply showed these txt files in Browse Music Folder view, the browser
would display them when clicked on.

Glad it is working. No problems with album covers in Firefox anymore?
To create a PDF you either have to install Adobe Acrobat (this will
also install a PDF printer) or a third party PDF printer (PDF995 is
freeware). When selected, these printers will ask for a file name of
the PDF to be created.

I don't know if you've ever bothered to research this, but shipping
costs aren't simply directly proportional to distance travelled. The
country of entry matters, as does the type of product and any
regulatory issues. Canada, for example, has the now 5% GST but
products simply jumping across the border from the US are not simply
5% more. There are costs for meeting CSA safety regulations as well
as packaging due to the requirement for both French and English on
packaging, plus labelling laws on certain products (especially food).

I haven't had the opportunity to compare keyboards, but I have noticed
that network routers are much more costly. as is some food, gasoline
most certainly. Beer at the pubs is cheaper by a bit (helped by the
no tipping thing). Eating out at a restaurant is insane (at least in
most parts of England. Bedding seems to be cheaper, strangely, and
most things you get at M&S. It varies wildly but hardly predatory.
They have rather stiff laws about that. Oddly, my recent need for a
hard drive in the UK lead me to a very nice supply of computer parts
that were on par with hard drives in my part of Canada. However, this
store is the low overhead type that isn't likely to be carrying
squeezeboxes any time soon. Keyboards, I imagine, also benefit from
an economy of scale.

Re: [slim] Announcing the Squeezebox Duet

2008-01-13 Thread corycwagner

I reviewed the postings on this site as well as the press release and I
still can't seem to figure out the particulars of the Duet and how it
would work within my existing set up. Hopefully someone can answer my
questions.
Here is my current setup:

2 - Slimp3's
3 - Squeeze Box Series 3
1 - Squeezebox Series 1

- Connected through a mixture of Ethernet and Wireless

- Using an Infrant Ready NAS NV to stream SlimServer

The setup currently works well, except for the slowness of the web
interface and the ready NAS.

Questions:

1. If a bought a Duet, would it sync with the other devices for
simultaneous playback?
2. If I bought just the remote, would it work with my existing
slimp3/squeezeboxes?
3. If I bought just the remote, would it work with my Ready NAS, or
would I have to run separate software on another computer (I sure hope
not)?

Thanks for your replies...please excuse me if the question has been
asked before.

Logitech / SD products are hardly the only ones in the world where the

Most things just cost more in Europe, for a number of reasons already

Euro zone -- I've always been astounded that prices in the UK look

I have an RG6 running from my TP to my newly installed theater area. I
just use the SPDF to supply the same music (or I just don't turn amp at
the TP on when I only want to hear it in my theater).

I just got a PS3...I think it's a great media adapter (relatively
speaking). I've had terrible luck with a Denon 4308 and the Pioneer
Media Gallery on the Pro-150FD. I have very little confidence in DLNA
products...however the PS3 blows the others away so far.

For rhapsody you don't play them locally, you actually play them over
the internet.

You have access to your entire "collection" thru the Squeezebox, and
all the rest of their catalog as well. That was you can listen to your

Re: [slim] Price Difference

2008-01-13 Thread pnielsen

Don't forget that in the US "a deal is a deal". Many US resellers have
restocking fees that apply if the customer decides to return his unit.

This does not hold true for many countries outside the US. For instance
in Finland, any seller must BY LAW take back a consumer unit for FULL
REFUND if the product is returned within 14 days.

Restocking fees are generally unheard of in Nordic countries (and in
Europe in general, AFAIK).

All returns will be a burden on the seller. Consequently, the margins
must be bigger than in the US.

Sorry I jumped in late... did you say if the Mini has a static IP? I
looked back and saw 192.168.1.30, that's it?If you're connecting
directly to the Mini you will need a crossover cable if you don't have
a router or hub.

Since you've entered a static IP, did you enter the subnet mask as
255.255.255.0 and the router address as 192.168.1.30?

You would then enter a static IP for your SB3, say 192.168.1.40 and the
server address 192.168.1.30.

I never get any of these arguments. It's not just exchange. There is
shipping, import tax, commission/surcharges on exchange, stocking
charges, and pay rates for whoever manages the whole thing locally.

Plus, as is often pointed out, you can buy online and get it shipped
yourself. After all, it could be worse. You could share a border and
still be told it's not available and can't be shipped across the
border. When everything goes global, we'll all be better for it, but
then we'll get to complain about the even bigger megacorporations. :)

What about custom duties (about 4-5% on electronics:
399*6.2031*1.05*1.25).

What about the freight and stocking costs? This is a big issue! What if
the Swedish importer buys 1 units but can only sell 9000 before
there is a new model or the price radically changes.

What about the high salary and company taxes in Sweden? Somehow the
sales personnell in Sweden has to get paid too...

When you buy in Sweden you have amazing rights to return the product
for whatever reason. Generally, in the US a deal is a deal!

You can always buy directly from a US reseller (or on eBay) if you
think the Euro prices are too high!!! Quit complaining already!

Re: [slim] IP Questions

2008-01-13 Thread gcogger

dminches;258076 Wrote:
>
> 2 - If my computer has a static IP is there any difference between
> loading 127.0.0.1 or the computer's IP address to access slimserver?

The first question has been well answered but this is just to clarify
on the second question. Prepare for more information than you really
wanted :)

(The simple bit)
127.0.0.1 (which is named localhost) is always 'this machine'.
If you are on a machine with an IP address of, say, 192.168.0.1 then,
from that machine, you can generally use either 192.168.0.1 or
127.0.0.1 interchangeably.

(The 'more than you wanted to know' bit)
There are 2 circumstances I can think of where the 2 addresses will
give different results:

1 - This depends on how the operating system (actually the IP stack)
handles the addresses. I have seen systems where using 127.0.0.1 works
but the 'real' address does not - if the network cable to the machine
has been unplugged.
When accessing the 'real' address, the IP stack talks to the network
card, which reports that it has no connection. The call fails.
When accessing 127.0.0.1, the IP stack realises that it is local, does
NOT talk to the network card, and the call succeeds.

2 - If a machine has more than one network card in use, they will have
different addresses. This is called a 'multi homed host'. Say the
addresses are 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2. Now some software is
written such that it will only respond to calls on one specific IP
address - (I've no idea about Slimserver, I'm afraid). If you use one
of the specific addresses, then you know that software listening on
that address will respond. If you use 127.0.0.1, you have no control
over which IP address this will go to, so you don't know if the
software will respond.

Hope you're still awake :)

Hi Z,

I think it may be an MIP issue as the MIP server triggers the rescan (I
think).
MIP support sucks so I'll just live with the minor annoyance.

Have a look at the WavInput plugin. It takes whatever you are playing on

Not to mention that 802.11n is a DRAFT. Interoperation is not
guaranteed among different manufacturers
and I for one am glad to avoid the screaming that would ensue over
that and over upgrades to official 802.11n if/when that EVER happens.
Whining about the lack of n pales in comparison.

It was not intended to be better. It was intended to be cheaper, and
it is for the Receiver alone.
It's not for everyone, and it's nice that you have been able to

Compared to what? I had planned to get a Nokia 770 on eBay for this
sole purpose. It would be clumsy and far from optimal, but still
probably cost close to $200 bought used and scratched up...

$300 is a fair price for a remote uniquely designed for use with the
Squeezebox and/or Transporter.

Consider the competition. What other music players are offering 802.11n
today?

mik63;258170 Wrote:
> 3) The audio specs are not better at all.

I'm sure you have already noticed that the Receiver is simply a
Squeezebox without screen in a black box at half the price ($149 vs
$299).

I think both the controller and receiver (=Duet combined) are a very
smart marketing move:

1) It does not annoy customers that recently spent $300 on a Squeezebox
or $2000 on a Transporter. These owners can simply buy a controller to
get the added functionality. This will put them at a step beyond a
simple Duet setup, and most people will probably not agonize about
losing out.

2) The Receiver part adds a truely missed component to the line; an
inexpensive way to add a player to locations where you don't care about
(or want) seeing a display, like in a kitchen setup.

Re: [slim] Is Duet screen better than Harmony 880 screen

2008-01-13 Thread norderney

I currently use the Handheld Web Interface on a PDA for controlling my
Transporter. I am interested in the new SB Controller, one thing I
like being able to do on the Web Interface is key in part of a track
name, either the beginning, middle or end of the name and it finds the
track. This also appies to artist and album searches too. Will I be
able to do this on the SB Controller?

This was a major negative for me with the Sonos Remote. Apparently it
would only allow you to search from the beginning of the name. It
would not allow you to search with a word from the middle or end of an
artist or track name.

Yep. Its on my 'fix list'. Firefox is a bit more strict in holding to
standards then IE is. I'm changing the code so that more standard code
is generated which should resolve the Firefox issue. Planning on
somewhere this week for release

This is not yet a known problem but since ACC is still in 'beta' issues
are to be resolved :-) Just need your help...

By my knowledge a page has no control over the Print option being
available or not.
Can you provide me with some more info on this one? Does it have
anything to do with the number of albums? How large is your collection?
Can you try only generating for a few albums and see if the problem
persists?

When this problem is solved, you can ofcourse create your PDF file by
just printing to the PDF print. I myself also use this for archive
purposes.

Why? Why not use the scroll wheel for selecting video files and play

Re: [slim] Using Squeezebox with a player other than Slimserver

2008-01-13 Thread ceejay

Sorry, Squeezebox absolutely needs a copy of slimserver to talk to.

You can use whatever player you like to send audio to your computer's
audio out, and then use one of the various available kludges to catch
that and send it though slimserver to the SB, if you really want to.

Or you could investigate one of the alternative player-controllers for
slimserver, like Moose (see 3rd party board).

There are quite a few players of this general type - I've recently
acquired a Netgear EVA8000 myself. Most of these players use either a
uPnP server or an SMB file share to access their data.

My experience so far is that because of the considerably greater
complexity of streaming video (there are so many file types, formats,
containers...) these products are not very mature.

You could think of all of them as being like a Squeezebox for video,
though. (NB - that's a horrible over-simplification but its a good
starter).

The network issues associated with streaming full-resolution (never
mind HD) video make the debates here over wireless LAN issues look very
simple, though!

Re: [slim] Announcing the Squeezebox Duet

2008-01-13 Thread ShutterShock

Any suggestions on an attractive, compact amplifier/speaker combo to go
with the new SB Receiver? I’m thinking for secondary listening areas
such as a bedroom, kitchen or home office... Something really simple
in design and visually neutral.

It’d be similar in concept to some of the docking amplifier/speaker
solutions currently available for iPods but without the unsightly dock
for the iPod. Above average audio quality would be nice. So far, all
I’ve come across is the Tivoli Radio Model 2 (with subwoofer). It’s a
nice solution but I’m thinking there’s something even simpler with even
better audio quality.

BTW, a belated CONGRATULATIONS to the design team on Duet! Getting the
“Best of CES” from CNET will help spread the word of this exceptional
product line to the broader community.

Re: [slim] SB3 rebuffering and reset problems

2008-01-13 Thread jth

I have been having similar problem with rebuffering with my SB3. The SB3
is a recent addition to my network, replacing a SB1.

The Rebuffering 1% ... message has been occurring with some frequency.
The problem is that it never rebuffers, at that point the music just
stops. This is with my own mp3 files. I'm able to hit play and start
the song again, the SB3 does not crash.

I noticed that wireless traffic on my WLAN spikes on each song change,
going from around 256 kbps (my mp3s are VBR, so this varies a lot) to
3600-4000 kbps. I haven't yet done a packet capture to see what these
spikes are.

Because of the spikes, I made sure the web interface was not running,
disabled AudioScrobbler and my SBC to see if those were the cause, but
the spikes continue. I wonder if the burst of traffic is overwhelming
the SB3 somehow.

I ran network health tests at 320 kbps and 500 kbps and it stayed at
100%. Wireless strength is 80. I don't think there's any packet loss.
The SB1 in that location never had problems. There are no warnings or
errors in the server log. I didn't see a likely bug in the bug db for
this.

Re: [slim] IP Questions

2008-01-13 Thread radish

127.0.0.1 is a special IP which always means "this machine". So
Slimserver's address is only 127.0.0.1 if the browser is on the same
machine, if you run a browser elsewhere you need to use the machine's
actual IP, and likewise the players will use the actual IP.

I disagree. For me, having a remote not tied to line-of-sight is a
big upgrade over the standard remote. I've used a laptop for that
purpose, but the web interface is not optimized for use as a remote.
And by all reports, using a PDA for this still lacks responsiveness.

Anyway, that's why I plan to buy one.

[slim] IP Questions

2008-01-13 Thread dminches

I assume these are simple IP questions.

1 - How does slimserver "know" its IP address is 127.0.0.1?

2 - If my computer has a static IP is there any difference between
loading 127.0.0.1 or the computer's IP address to access slimserver?

I just saw the Controller in today's WSJ with the Money Honey. I guess
the review of the Controller got either edited out or they did not have

clearly in his hand and on the table. If you recorded this program you
can see it just before the reviewer from Cnet says that the OLED will

Some good & bad news re CD solution on Windows.

I converted my Plugin quite easily to SC7. However, mplayer will not
play CDs on Windows but I found another app called cdda2wav which will
extract CD track and create a WAV stream. As long as tracks play to
conclusion there is no problem but if user terminates a playing track
from Slimserver - a CDDA2WAV process left behind which is not
acceptable.

I'll have to leave it for now.

Re: [slim] Announce: Album Catalog Creator for SlimServer

2008-01-13 Thread SilverRS8

Just to let you know

I'm working on RC2 which has some fixes. I can confirm the album cover
issues some have posted and working on it. Also Schatzy is doing some
testing. Hope to post it somewhere in this week.

As for the issue of Frold; SC7 isn't officially supported yet although
it works fine but it seems the different beta build also have different
connection requirements. I installed SC7 this weeks (required for the
new Duet controller I ordered) and ACC works without having to change
anything.
Others though have mentioned that the UID of the connection string must
be changed in order to get ACC working.

[slim] Slow browsing with the remote

2008-01-13 Thread Joaquin

I've seen some threads about this, but don't know what to do about it.
Lately I've noticed that the browsing is very slow. I choose Browse
musicfolder/Mixed/ and then nothing happens. I have to wait about 20-30
secs before the list comes up. Now, that doesn't sound that bad, but
it's pretty annoying and it used to work alot faster before.

What can I do ?

Yes, I can ping 192.168.1.30 which is the address I've manually given

Amen! (not the religious kind)

I couldn't agree more... but I'd like to add.

Lots of folks use the album covers to quickly navigate their music
library. I have several artist with multiple CDs. Most times I do not
remember the name of the album or the name of the track, but I assure
you I know which CD I have to pickup to listen to the track I want.
Call it the quick-visual-recognition-effect. No need to read or write.
I have a lot of World music CDs and can't even spell the name of some
of the artists or albums to search with accuracy. To avoid having to
look at CD jackets I use genre, playlists, favorites with the existing
remote and Moose for the rare times I use my laptop to listen or
manipulate my library. I think the Controller will integrate these
navigation and manipulation methods for me.

I don't hate PDAs but, I feel that PDAs are not a good fit as a remote.
They require two hands to manipulate them (put-beer-down syndrome) and
as "multi-tasking" they "usually" do not master any of these tasks.
Acting as a remote being one of them. They were initially designed to
facilitate the use of applications while on the run and to compliment
them, but not as a full replacement for most of these applications. If
you had the choice what would you use to browse the web with... a small
screen PDA or a full screen computer? Of course, if you're on the run
they're excellent replacements. Lately, applications specifically
designed for mobility (with a natural fit - like GPS and contact
related apps) are starting to take full advantage of this mobile
devices.

I don't know how long the Controller takes to come up, but I hope that
is as close to instant-on as possible. I know that when my PDA or
Smartphone hangs it takes some time to reboot. Once it has rebooted, I
have to start the Remote Control app or browser and then I have to wait
for connection to the SC. I don't have to tell you how frustrating it is
to have to run for the manufacture's remote to lower the volume because
the PDA has taken a nap ro is going through its wake up process. I
never had or will have to reboot the existing remote.

The two thing I want to see implemented in this Controller are. 1.) A
practical and flexible Playlist application. A dynamic playlist
function that won't interfere with the selection that is currently
being played. The ability to move tracks within playlists and the
ability to select and add multiple tracks from Artis/album views to the
playlist of one choice. 2.) The segregation of configuration options of
the SC from the functions required to listen to music and manipulate
playlist. All the fuunctions that have the potential damage my music
library or change the way the SC is configured should be password
protected. I want to be able to hand over this remote to my wife,
family and friends with absolute confidence that they won't mess with
my setup.

One more thing... The ability to use the "inactive" earphone plug with
headphones to preview tracks before adding them to a playlist with one
hand while lying in the sofa and with the other hand on my IPA... would
be the icing on my cake.

Re: [slim] Announcing the Squeezebox Duet

2008-01-13 Thread TonyM

Hi,

My apologies if this has been asked before but I just wondered if the
new SqueezeBox device will have an I2S interface that is more easily
used in combination with the TDA1541A format than was the SB3? (ie
without the need for additional logic to modify the left/right
justification thing)

It would be ideal for me if it did since I could easily then build the
SB receiver into my DAC very close to the TDA1541A and since it doesn't
have the VFD display and the parts that drive it then even better.

Great looking product btw!

Many thanks,
Tony

Murphy's law, I suppose.

It worked for a while but not anymore.

Seems the IP address seems to change, the last digit changes from 2 to
3 -- and back. Slimserver shows two addresses, similar except the last
digit, and I keep changing it on the SB. Mostly it doesn't work, but
sometimes it works for a little while, then Squeezeserver turns itself
off.

Irritating, but I will have to experiment a little more, I suppose.

I did install 1.02. I am only looking in the slimserver page. Is that
the same as the SB page? I don't know how to get to the web page.

Re: [slim] What would it take? (reciva thread)

2008-01-13 Thread y360

According to the following press release, Reciva radios will soon
support Rhapsody Direct.

http://www.businesswire.com/portal/site/google/index.jsp?ndmViewId=news_view&newsId=20080110005267&newsLang=en

So it seems that Reciva devices will actually compete with SB for the
user segment that's using only Squeezenetwork with their SB

[slim] Streaming interruption Q

2008-01-13 Thread mapatton

OK, a bit of a twist on the old question.
Both my wife and I have Softsqueeze on our work computers (different
companies, locations, IPS, etc) accessing the server at home. The
install is with LAME as the files are in flac on the server, and
converted when streamed over the internet.

Well, I never encounter stuttering, etc. She encounters stuttering at
times. She says this is whenever I am on it as well.

I would presume it is a bandwidth issue (using a 5Mbps cable
connection) on the upstream, but,,

It is odd that I do not encounter this stuttering when she is on. I
have tried both proxy and direct streaming. I have adjusted both our
settings in effort to minimize upstream needs.

Thoughts? Is anyone streaming using internet to different locations
using a cable connection at the server? Care to offer your settings
that work?

Thanks!

AFAIK setting the gateway to 0 won't work, you need to set it be the
address of your router (or the same as your music source if you don't
have a router).

[slim] Can't get SB3 to connect to server anymore (OS X)

2008-01-13 Thread Husted

Hi all,

I've run into a problem where I can't get my SB3 to connect to the
server anymore. I have tried to reset the SB3. My setup is as follows.

A SB3 is connected directly to a Mac Mini via an Ethernet cable, no
wireless.
The Mini is running Leopard 10.5.1. On the Mini the Ethernet is set to
Manually configuration and the IP is 192.168.1.30, subnet mask is
255.255.255.0
Starting up a webbrowser I can go to 192.168.1.30:9000 and see
SqueezeCenter.

The SB3 does boot and allow me to choose networking to static address.
I've giving the SB3 the address 192.168.1.40, subnet is set to
255.255.255.0. gateway and dns is set to 0. Music source is set to
192.168.1.30.

Is there anything wrong with the above setup?
I'm not using a crossover cable, it hasn't been a problem before. But
just for fun I've found an old switch to put in between but it didn't
help.

I think my problems began when I tried to enable DHCP on the Mini. It
didn't work and now I can't seem to get static IP working again.

Any ideas?

Agreed. I consider myself one of the 'faithful' (I own 2 Squeezebox
and referred another friend into buying one himself) but do no hacking
whatsoever. The closest I get to tooling around is to try an
occasional nightly build of SqueezeCenter, and that's usually only to
fix an occasional bug or obtain new features.

At first announcement, I was one of the vocal who bitched about the
Controller's price, but I have now resigned myself to eagerly awaiting
it's retail release and will be one of the first to order it. I've
tried a Nokia 770, a PSP, a laptop, and now my iPhone. Although all of
them work, the Controller will work much better and integrate as a
proper remote control should: fast/responsive and intuitive.

I'm just trying to decide whether or not I want to blow an extra $100
USD and just get a Duet. I'm sure I can find a use for a 3rd
Squeezebox (receiver)! ;-P

Re: [slim] Autoscan

2008-01-13 Thread Zaragon

I don't believe that the SlimServer does that out of the box. It
normally only scans on demand. It is shipped with a plug in that can
schedule a rescan once a day.

Have you installed the AutoRecan plugin. This plugin does what you
describe in that it rescans everytime you add or change something.
(Only for SC7)

If you look at the server settings plugin page you have the option to
disable any plugin and also to configure them to your liking.

Are you using the iTunes library feature? I don't have iTunes but I
think that may do something everything you add/change something which
may be triggering the scan.

I have to disagree. I'm not sure of your definition of 'faithful'; I
nearly bought a SlimP3 (but didn't), but I did buy a SB1, a SB2 and a
Transporter. I'm geeky enough to have tried several solutions to
different 'problems' (external M-Audio SuperDAC with the SB1, Qnap
TS-101 and a mini-ITX box as music servers and, more pertinently,
several different 'graphical remote' solutions).

I've used a laptop, a Pocket PC with a SD wireless card and a Nokia
770. None were very satisfactory. But the Jive handset (now the
controller) does almost everything I wanted, it's responsive, intuitive
and frankly, a joy to use. It is more expensive than I expected, but
it's just what this 'faithful' user had been waiting ages for.

Seems to work fine when I put in that IP address manually! Otherwise it

Sure, popcorn would be nice too, but the crackling might disturb the
music experience. But seriously, whether one streams music or images or
video is all basically the same thing. Since the SB can do the one so
well, is it too much to hope it might also be put to good use in the
other areas ?

Thanks again, Phil!

The MAC address is correct.

The IP address assigned is 192.168.2.2:23277.

Right now my Squeezebox decided it would work again for a while, but as
soon as it stops again, I will check the other details!

[slim] Cat among the pigeons

2008-01-13 Thread luuk

Let me start by saying that I have been a very happy and dedicated SB
(2) user for a few years now. But, I am now setting up a dedicated home
cinema and this raises several questions about how to transport music
there from my server. Inevitably I find my mind turning to non-SB
solutions because I would also want to transport pictures/video from
the server as well. Yet I am reluctant to do so. I have some experience
using a PS3 to do precisely that, and this has been less than
satisfying. Wouldn't it be great if SBs could also transport images and
video? Are there any plans in this direction?
