Eric, I don't think that a crossover cable is needed, the Mini should be able to handle the crossover internally as pretty much every PC can today. It has also been working for a couple of months. The IP and subnet mask is set as you suggest. If you read my previous post you'll see that it's working on my Macbook so it must be something I've messed up on the Mini. [slim] Microsoft takes a shine to SlimDevices?
Copied from Reghardware... Microsoft wants to buy mouse maker Logitech, if investor speculation is to be believed. At this stage, neither company is commenting on the rumour, though it pushed Logitech's Zurich-traded shares up 12 per cent today, according to Reuters. The big question is why Microsoft would make such a move. Logitech was once the world's leading mouse manufacturer, but Microsoft has built a solid business of its own, and the growth of Asian manufacturers means Logitech' no longer the pointer powerhouse it once was. But Logitech doesn't just make mice, and its Harmony universal remote control family might complement what Microsoft is doing to drive demand for Windows Media Center. The software giant might also have taken a shine to Logitech's Squeezebox networked music player operation, gained when it acquired Slim Devices last year [for $20m]. Squeezebox could fit in with Microsoft's plans for its Zune range, and help it compete more effectively with Apple, though the deal would surely cost it future Mac and Linux customers, all of whom are currently supported thanks to Slim Devices' and now Logitech's commitment to open source software. Microsoft's bid was alleged to value the takeover at $8bn, enough to make it the company's biggest acquisition yet. If it was for slimdevices that would be pretty exciting and make the squeezebox 3 into the biggest media player around. [slim] Duplicate albums missing tracks
From time to time I notice that Slimserver is adding albums. On investigation it seems that albums are being split, with some tracks being in one instance of the album, and the rest (usually just one track) being in another. A delete and re-scan usually sorts it out, but this is a pain. Yesterday another problem surfaced. I was searching for The Who, Live at Leeds on the SB3, but it was showing the playlist for that album as being empty. I went to the computer and opened Slimserver/Albums. The total album count was about 15 higher than I would have expected. There were two albums titled Live at Leeds, but both were empty. The tracks were still on my hard drive, so I did delete and re-scan everything again. Album count now correct, all tracks back in a sinlge Live at Leeds album. Anyone got any idea why this is happening? I'm using Slimserver 6.5.1 (up to now, it's not been broke, so no need to fix it!) I don't use iTunes I don't use any plug-ins that I'm aware of The album above is not in any playlist All my music is in one folder on my external HDD - there are no shortcuts to other folders All tracks are WMA - mostly lossless, but a few at lower bitrates I have been experiencing intermittent problems with the power supply to my external HDD - could this be the cause? The external HDD holds my music folder, Slimserver is on the internal hard drive. [slim] Connecting to the internet
Apologies if this is a dumb question - but I am a real noobie!! I have an IP address of 192.168.0.1 set as my pc and 192.168.0.6 as the SB. I have been reading up about this - and I think it may be to do with the DNS and Gateway address. They are set as 0.0.0.0 on the SB. Is this the problem? If so - what should I set these to? Would appreciate any help that you can offer. Re: [slim] Price Difference
the prices are usually different between the usa and europe etc becaause: (1) the slim devices web site is only going to sell these things at the retail price becuase otherwise shops would complain if the mail order and shop price differed (shops could refuse to stock the goods). (2) the retail price only gets adjusted from time to time unlike exchange rates (3) the retail price reflects the wages and property and tax rates in the economy in question. (4) manufactures do not sell products and a fixed percentage over cost - instead they try to charge a price which gives them a maximum income. eg if they charge 20% more for the unit and sales fall 10% then this is a good increase but if sales fall 30% it is not. this equality comes out differently in different countries - so windows in china costs a fraction of windows in the usa. So although we consumers make a lot of fuss it's totally normal and our only way out is to import if the price diff is that big. -- willyhoops willyhoops's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10563 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=42113 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Are those 2 separate hubs, or the same? Drawing the physical connections would be more useful than a flow diagram. It would make more sense to put the inner hub between the PC and the router and then connect the SB to that. Yes sorry zune not zen of course. the attraction is that slimdevices are making home media servers not competing DAPs of course. if msft could own the home media server market they might be able to win in DAPs. currently the home market mostly works on ipods connected into a dock attached to your hifi and the slimsevere is a niche product - but it's got potential. apple might think carefully about the importance of a home media server to defend the ipod. the funny thing about apple is that sound quality matters so little to them - both the tinny ipod sound electronics and the 128k compression standard. -- willyhoops willyhoops's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10563 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=42018 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

The network issues associated with streaming full-resolution (never mind HD) video make the debates here over wireless LAN issues look very simple, though! Ceejay About a year ago, I bought a Buffalo LinkTheater networked DVD play. It has it's own quirks (i.e., not all formats are recognized), but overall I'm pleased with it. The video files are stored on a Buffalo TeraStation NAS, but I don't use the NAS' media server. Instead, I installed wizd on a linux server (same machine where the slimserver runs) and it does a good job of serving up video. The house network is fully wired, so I don't have bandwidth problems (GigE between NAS and server, 100M between server and LinkTheater). The slimdevices and the LinkTheater are a nice combination and using the Harmony remote alleviates the remote clutter. --Buzz -- scbuzz scbuzz's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15016 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=42166 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Although the script is a .hta application it is not running in an Internet Explorer process and hence I cannot detect which version of IE is installed (besides some not so nice workarounds) to automatically determine if 'file:///' can be used or not. The reason why Microsoft decided to use a seperate 'mshta' interpreter was that under the security context of IE, a script isn't allowed anything to do directly on the system. A .hta is always allowed running code to do anything that is allowed in the current user context. Do you know if the version prior to IE7 (is that 6.0.5 or is there something in between?) does cope with the file:/// prefix? If that is so I don't thing many would have a problem. Another option would be to create an option for various IE versions (either through the GUI or by setting a variable value in the script). [slim] Wireless - yes, Homeplug - No
I'm looking for some help with my problem. I have used my Squeezebox wirelessly for about a year with no real problems. I would like to use it in another room which has dodgy wireless strength. I have purchased 2 Homeplug AV200's which I have wired up. I have connected a laptop to the Homeplug and it accesses the internet no problem. However, when I try and use the SB on the ethernet connection I cannot get it to work. It finds the ip address fine and my music folder but then tries to connect to Slimserver it times out and the screen goes blank. I have a feeling that I will be asked about IP addresses and DHCP etc, but I am a bit confused with the techie stuff so I will need fairly plain English if possible! Quoting willyhoops ([EMAIL PROTECTED]): Yes sorry zune not zen of course. the attraction is that slimdevices are making home media servers not competing DAPs of course. if msft could own the home media server market they might be able to win in DAPs. currently the home market mostly works on ipods connected into a dock attached to your hifi and the slimsevere is a niche product - but it's got potential. apple might think carefully about the importance of a home media server to defend the ipod. the funny thing about apple is that sound quality matters so little to them - both the tinny ipod sound electronics and the 128k compression standard. Try some or all of these if you like: . Uninstall slimserver by right clicking the icon in the Preference pane and selectRemove . Go to Applications and use the Search function to find any remaining files of Slimserver and delete them ( drag to Trash ) . Download and install Slimserver 6.5.4 . Use a program such as Onyx which can be downloaded free from Version Tracker or CNet sites. . Run Automation from the menu choices within Onyx. Be sure all the caches are cleaned. . Start Squeezecenter/Web Access from the Preference pane. . Start Squeezebox after unplugging the power to it for a minute. The Squeezebox should walk you through the wireless connection as you push the right button. It will automatically find the configurations you need. The only other thing you may have to do is put in the WEP or WPA codes for the wireless router if you use them ( and you should ) Good luck -- avta avta's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1860 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=42169 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I think we're getting a little to worked up about nothing here. We should think ourselves lucky that: 1. the hardware and firmware of the SB3 is so mature and reliable 2. SqueezeCenter is GPL We are lucky that SlimDevices originally decided to put most of the functionality, the stuff we all tinker with and expand, in a GPL'd piece of software, and not the closed firmware or hardware of the Squeezebox. If Microslop were to buy Logitech, then so be it. Yes, we might lose some of the cool-factor, but so what? The source is open, so someone will fork it. And when it forks, the only thing lost is incremental improvements to firmware. Which ain't that much of a loss, considering its maturity. For those rooms I don't need an advanced remote like the SBR (and besides, every room need their own remote I think, so they can control the music in _their_ room. A few of the other files that it comes with are not - those are the graphics and the firmware binaries that are served up to SB or browser clients. It is trivial to remove/replace those and still have a working slimserver, but if someone seriously wanted to make their own slimserver then they would probably want to fork it anyway. Last time I looked into packaging slimserver for Debian (which was a couple years ago), the info I found was that the contents of the HTML and Graphics directories were not available under a DFSG-free license (as well as Firmware, of course). If I recall correctly, most of my info came from Dan Sully. Has that changed? The fonts in Graphics are pretty significant, since they are the fonts that render in the SB displays. Replacing them is certainly doable, but not trivial, and it's not something that I'd think a forker would consider part of a typical re-branding process. Similarly, while parts of the HTML directory would certainly be modified in any re-branding, I don't think that being required to replace the entire thing (including reimplementing all the javascript code) would be expected. - Marc ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Ok, now I'm confused. Do you have 3 devices connected to the Internet through the hub and only the SB behind the router? That's not good design. The router should sit where the hub is just now, protecting your network from the Internet. Everything else should be connected to the router's LAN port(s), possibly via the hub (connected to the router's LAN port). Something like: Hub --- Router --- Internet | |---PC |---Wireless |---SB3 Then set the router to be a DHCP server (which is probably is by default) and then set the PC, wireless and SB3 to use DHCP to get their address. -- Cry Havok Cry Havok's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3267 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=42211 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
