Re: [slim] Wanted: used slimp3

2008-03-14 Thread ptrainer

I purchased my Slimp3 (which I still use) 6 years ago. I bought it to
replace my Turtle Beach Audiotron (remember those?) which was a royal
pain to use (but very, very cool back in late 2000!) I was lucky and
sold that unit on eBay for the same amount I bought it for. The arrival
of Slimp3 was my excuse to get rid of the Audiotron since after going
the route of using a home Digital Music Server I just couldn't handle
going back to playing CDs exclusively :-)

By the way, I still think the Slimp3 is the coolest looking compared to
all generations of the Squeezebox. Anyone else agree?

My first digital server was embedded (still is) in my AV receiver Onkyo

contains a DAC for each channel.

I haven't found a log for changes yet. Anyone else?

The changes I've noticed after updates were...

-the remote's buttons light up (that didn't work out of the box!?)
-when you're in 'Now Playing' and scroll to a new song and press play,
it skips to the song rather than clearing the songs and having that
song be the only one in the playlist
-when you view a track a tiny thumbnail of the cover art appears to the
left of the track title

Anyone notice other changes?

Re: [slim] SB3 stops randomly

2008-03-14 Thread bernt

I had almost all issues described in this thread. On a bad day i could
not get 100% on the 64kbps network test even if no other wireless
computer was on.

I replaced my Netgear DG834G with a Linksys WAG325N, placed it on the
exact same spot and now I get 100% on the 5000kbps test all day long
even with 4 wireless computers connected, surfing, streaming and
whatever.

Of course this won't help if the SB are wired.

Tips for wireless SB.
1. The server should be wired and have a fixed ip outside the dhcp
scoop.
2. Set a fixed ip on the SB. Make shure it's outside the dhcp scoop.
All kind of strange things could happen if you have a ip conflict.
3. Upgrade your switch\router.
4. Move around the AP to find the best spot.
5. Wire the SB just to se if it still problems.

Tips for wired SB.
1. See above.
2. See above.
3. Install Softsqueeze on a wired PC and test if that works.
4. Uninstall antivirus and disable FW (just for the moment) on the
server.
5. Try another cable.
6. Change port om the switch.
7. Upgrade your switch\router.
8. Install SC on another PC. The nic could be broken.

Or, just put your favorite cd in the slot and sit down and have a few
bears.

I've been on the beta programme for quite a while, so some

I was never keen on album art - 75% of my music is classical, and who

it does add a lot of 'tangibleness' to browsing. At the moment you
can't turn art off.

If you browse by album, you just get 4 lines, with art. However,
browsing by artist you get 9 (no art), then 4 albums with art once you

The Controller is better than iPeng on the iTouch. In earlier times
iPeng was better, but recent developments on scrolling and battery life

Re: [slim] Error: Couldn't install MySQL as a service!

2008-03-14 Thread AndrewFG

In the meantime I discovered a work around that seems to work.

1) Open Windows Services application

2) Select the SqueezeCenter service and set its Start Type to
Automatic - Delayed; and set its Logon As a defined user account on
your PC that you have granted access to your Music (and iTunes)
folders

3) Select the SqueezeMySql service and set its Start Type to
Automatic; leave its Logon As set to Local System

4) Close Services and Reboot the machine

[slim] Synching problems

2008-03-14 Thread gorman

I attach my .log file. It details just the playing of two FLAC tracks on
a SB2/SB3/Softsqueeze synch combination.

The tracks were supposed to play gaplessly but I know that synch
currently doesn't handle that. Nonetheless, they not only were not
playing gaplessly, they were clearly out of synch since the beginning
and they did not go back to synch once they transitioned from on to the
other (I was expecting at least that)...

Re: [slim] Synching problems

I add a different log. This time only the two SBs were synched, while
playing two 192kbps MP3s. I stopped the logging well into the second
track, so as to include fully the transition.

This time performance was better, but still inferior to what I heard
while using some of the beta nightlies.

[slim] The bandwith limitation doesnt seem to work

2008-03-14 Thread rayslim

Hi, first of all I want to say I just love your product! :)

To my problem:
I want to listen to my music from outside my LAN, and since my bandwith
is somewath limited, i need to lower the bitrate on the stream. So far
no success on that.

Ive tries to set to the lowest bitrate (64kbps) on the player, but the
stream is unchanged and my player reports 320 kbps if it is a 320 CBR
mp3 file or whatever the source file bitrate is...
Ive used Softsqueeze and other players, Ive tried to open:
http://SERVERIP:9000/stream.mp3?bitrate=64 No effect at all, the
stream is still at normal rate..

Any ideas?

You need to go into the setting menu for that player you're using (in
this case, SoftSqueeze). Go to the audio section and select Bitrate
Limiting, then select the highest bitrate that doesn't overwhelm your

Re: [slim] Error: Couldn't install MySQL as a service!

2008-03-14 Thread bobkoure

You could also set your SqueezeCenter service to depend on the MySql
service (so, whenever the SqueezeCenter service was started, the SCM
would start SqueezeMySQL first, -then- SqueezeMySQL.
In windows versions prior to Vista (and almost certainly in Vista) you
do this in the registry, not the services control manager.
Open your registry editor - go to key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\squeezesvc
Look for a sub-key called -DependOnService-.
If it doesn't exist
- create it as a -MULTI_SZ-
- the data is -SqueezeMySQL-

If it does exist (maybe you already did this for MusicIP?)
- edit it
- add an additional line to the data - -SqueezeMySQL-

I'm actually a bit surprised that the SqueezeCenter install process
doesn't just -do- this - I guess it's a matter of being able to support
already-installed generic MySQL installations.

For stream that are transcoded - the display will the original format of
the stream and not the transcoded (e.g. an RTSP stream will be shown as
RTSP and not as FLAC which is actually sent to SB).

I suspect it might the same for files. The only way to be sure is to
check the network statistics.

An alternative would be to look at the logs with player.source set to
DEBUG - you should see the command options on Lame being used to encode
the file.

2008-03-14 Thread rayslim

Well i know the bitrate is not reduced, i am pretty able to hear the
difference between 320kbps mp3 and 64kbps for example, and the audio i
hear (when i use 3.party player and set buffer size very big) is high
quality, i.e. the stream is not downsampled. in adition the buffer runs
out just as fast when i choose no limit as to when i choose 64, also my
connection isnt _that_ bad...

could you maybe give me more details on the player.source=debug thingy?
i looked around a bit, but couldnt find out where i set that, maybe ill
have to read some manuals :)

It is pretty obvious to me that choosing a bitrate limit has absolutely
no effect on the stream on my system.

The problem is that the assumption of track breaks when synced is

[slim] Multiple albums with same name not displaying correctly

2008-03-14 Thread Bay City

Hi All
I am having a problem with squeeze center 7.0

I have multiple albums in my collection that have the name but are
unrelated to each other.

example I have 3 albums with the title Nine Lives
one by Reo Speedwagon, one by Bonnie Rait, and one by Aerosmith
they are displayed very strange in my library.
under albums they show up as nine lives artist reo speedwagon, aerosith
and the bonnie rait shows up only under artist and not albums.
I have two albums titled XXX one by Chicago one by ZZ top
these show up under albums as XXX chicago,ZZ Top and under artist
Chicago shows album XXX but under artist ZZ top does not show any
Albums titled XXX.

Is there a bug with squeeze center not being able to sort out multiple
albums with the same title?

any help would be welcome
thanks

That actually brings up an interesting point.

When Slim Devices was Slim Devices, that may have been the case as a
smallish company trying to break out and efficiently focus.

However as a part of Logitech now, is that still true?

Which begs the question and the point for this post: Didn't Slim
Devices BENEFIT from melding with Logitech? Didn't it get a bigger
budget, bigger RD, more engineers?

I don't know the answers but I certainly hope so as a consumer.

And from Logitech's point of view, I also hope so. I mean, I hope that
Logitech doesn't just look at Slim Devices the way England looked at the
original American colonies pre-Revolutionary war, just to be milked.

I assume that Logitech saw the vision for a stronger Slim Devices by
helping it expand beyond its relatively humble beginnings.

Isn't that so?

As an analogy, if you are familiar with the pro audio world, a smallish
company known as M-Audio (originally known as MidiMan) grew quickly,
caught the eye of Digidesign, which bought it. Now M-Audio is bigger
and better than ever, releasing ever more products every year. (And
Digidesign had previously been purchased by Avid, that accelerated its
own growth).

Re: [slim] The bandwith limitation doesnt seem to work

2008-03-14 Thread rayslim

Yes i understand that, I deleted the log file first so it is not an old
entry.

Let me explain what i also tried: i opened the stream from
winamp/mediamonkey and other apps. I set the buffer to 1MB which by the
way should be sufficiant to buffer the entire song if it was 64kbps...
but yet the buffer gets empty several times during a 3-4 minutes song.
So there is definitly something wrong and the stream is not 64kbps.
Also it is quite easy to hear if it is downsampled to 64...

Im not sure where to look, i have tried reinstall the software, but no
luck.

There is a known issue where the text is reporting the presence of
lame, when it isn't there (playback falls back to the normal output if
it can't transcode to lower bitrate). Due to licensing issues, lame
is not installed by default, so unless you've installed it yourself,
it's not likely to be there. You can check manually, or try to enable

Officially you'll need a Controller to configure the Receiver. But the

Just set the ALBUMSORT tags suitably and they'll be sorted in whatever
order you want.

I personally like my albums listed in artist order, then in
chronological release date order, so my ALBUMSORT tags have the format
artistsortreleasedateletter (where letter is used to order
albums that were released in the same year). For example, The Kick
Inside has ALBUMSORT tag Bush, Kate 1978A, and Lionheart has
ALBUMSORT tag Bush, Kate 1978B.

Yap, you're right. What confused me is that his error message poins that
he's trying to connect from somewhere other than 127.0.0.1
(192.168.0.100). If he is coming from the same box where the SC is
running, then there might be that his PC gets a static address from the
router and passes that to SC.

Anyhow, good idea would be to reinstall 6.5.4, remove any kind of
blocking there and then go to SC7. Then, if it works, do what I
suggested and set it up again.

why i can't also do so on the jive?

basically, i am merely trying to replicate the browse artwork, artist,
year, album methodology of SC7 on the jive.

is this not possible without tag alterations???

Re: [slim] The bandwith limitation doesnt seem to work

2008-03-14 Thread rayslim

That helped a bit : ) Thanks.

Now i seem to be able to limit the bitrate - on my flac files at
least...

Now, mp3-files with high bitrate cant be transcoded? Dont seem to have
any effect on those... In the gui i cant choose lame as the encoder for
mp3 - mp3 transcoding only 'native' or disabled. And the bitrate to the
external player stays the same if i try to play a mp3-file...

 does NOT appeal.

They aren't non-standard tags.

It simply hasn't been implemented yet. The Jive interface is more like the
player interface in terms of customizability at the moment -- not the web
interface. My opinion anyway... Of course, some things you can do in the
player interface (remove unused items, etc) can't be done in Jive yet
either.

Maybe you should consider Jive as a WIP? It was developed quite quickly
and there are still a few things outstanding.
SlimServer/Squeezecenter took quite a few years to reach the state it
has.

Most of the navigational things I think are pretty crucial are due to
be addressed in 7.0.1:

* All Albums lisrings (from say, a Genre)
* Remember where you were last at when you return (i.e. back track)
* Reach the correct track in a Various Artists album when you've
navigated from an artist that has one track in that album
* Another one, which I've forgotten.

I managed a self-imposed denial of service on SC7 by enabling security
and forgetting to white list 127.0.0.1. Edited it into the .ini file :)

That's because it's optional and based on user preference. How you want
albumsort is certainly different than how I want it, so there's no
standard value, unlike something such as track title.

i see albumsort like compilation or other various 'extra' tags...
they may be standard via some standards body, but they aren't commonly
 enacted by default on rips.

I'm pretty sure iTunes adds TCMP/COMPILATION to rips, so that one at
least is standard for a lot of people.

i'm not sure if one can enable them by default on a rip, maybe you can
configure EAC to do so... but mine doesn't do it.

You sure can, EAC lets you add whatever tags you like as the whole FLAC
command line is configurable. What's more, you have the tokens you
probably need (artist name, album name, year) right there too.

What puzzles me is what you did before SC7? My understanding is that
the only way to affect sort order on SS6 was via albumsort tags, so
most people who care about such things already have them in their
collections. Personally I'm happy with alphabetical.

Re: [slim] jive album sorting

2008-03-14 Thread MrSinatra

excuse my non-exacting use of language, a sin i am often guilty of
here.

i actually can't say if the tag is standard or not, tag standards in
general seem to be a mess and there is seemingly no ultimate authority
on them.

however, what i meant was that most people, and most rips via lame or
whatever, don't include the tag by default.

anyway, my point is i don't want to use tags that aren't automatic via
the rip. and i surely don't want to add tags to thousands on albums.
i don't want to go thru my whole collection adding tags that SC7 (more
or less) doesn't need.

if its just a matter of patience, np, i can wait for jive to do what
SC7 does. but adding tags to make jive do what SC7 does? no thanks.

Re: [slim] jive album sorting

2008-03-14 Thread MrSinatra

kdf, how do you see the final implementation in practice?

i think artists is fine as is (by default) which is a simple
alphabetical list without artwork.

but albums should be the way dean suggests by default, artist, year,
album with little album artwork icons

right? is that how you see it too?

and i would think that various albums would also come up with the track
by that artist in such a list.

meaning, if i have 3 willie nelson ablums, and one various artist one
he has one track on, i would see all four albums, but only his one
track from the various album. yes?

Edit server.prefs (location varies per OS, Windows is in Docas
Settings/All Users/Application Data/SqueezeCenter/prefs)

remove the filterHosts, allowedHosts, authorize and username prefs.

That will clear all blocking settings and you can restore what you need
later.
