Re: [slim] Announcing the Squeezebox Duet
Hi. I'm quite interested in adding the DUET to my existing SB3 setup. It is crucial, however, that I am able to browse my collection by folder rather than by the tagged info. Is this possible with the DUET controller? When I looked at the user manual it stated only the following: "There are several ways to browse your music library with Squeezebox Duet, including: Album Artist Genre Year New Music" I would love to pick up the DUET, but must ensure the the "browse by folder" functionality. Any input is greatly appreciated. -- snuffelapagus snuffelapagus's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16157 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41813 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] When Duet controller can support Chinese Characters ??
I literally typed up the post as I tried it. As others have mentioned, all the strings are Unicode already, it's just that the built-in font doesn't have the CJK characters present, and using just any font wont work for licensing purposes. I'd be glad to help out others getting it to work. As mentioned in my post, the only thing that seemed screwed up is where the titles are displayed in italic - mainly in the details of a song, but *not* in the Now Playing screen. I can ask a friend who reads Chinese whether it's actually legible; will post back when I have the result. -- tomb tomb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14503 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44890 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

In the help screen there are some tips on printing. Point is, print margins etc can't be set from ACC. Also in the advanced browser setting the printing of background should be enabled to print the silver gradient behind the Artist and Album titles. I'll fix the display genre issue. [slim] I am stunned:
I am in a hotel in the boonies in Nebraska. I can listen to any CD in my collection (haven't loaded everything yet but 200+ CD's is a lot of good stuff so far.) My music is in central Georgia. I fed the CD's to two PC's pointed at the same itunes library... put in a cd in and waited (or not) for the CD to eject... now it's in the library. Two PC's are faster than one. Now the CD's are available from anywhere on the planet where a wifi (or wire) connection (to DSL/cable) is available. Tools let me determine how fast the connection really is. The software will compress the lossless music I stored at home on the SqueezeServer to MP3 depending on where I want to play it. On the target end, my laptop can output digital to an external digital converter (or can just pump to headphones or external powered speakers.) Anything anywhere is incredible. Anything anywhere is incredible even without buying hardware (so far I have not On-ed my Duet) but the SqueezeBox being a "remote" preamp is just what I was looking for.. If you have any questions about this #@@$, the slim folks can help and if they don't, I'll be happy to respond asap. I am not an employee or under contract.. but I understand the show last night where the geeks turned-on the light from around the planet. Re: [slim] SBR as wireless bridge?
I've got a MacPro 2.66 Powermac coming. It has no wireless. I currently use a laptop with an external HD to store music on. It connects wirelessly and I use the SB3 to control the music. I had used the SB3 to give Internet access to a Dell running Ubuntu as it did not have a wireless card. It worked fine. It is now out of the picture. So I know the SB3 can host wireless access for a computer through its Ethernet port. So tonight for an experiment I hooked the Mac laptop up to the SB3 to see how it might work. Once I cut the wireless connection on the laptop, the Network system preferences gave me a green light, but said it could not obtain an IP address, and off course the music library running through the laptop would not play. Forgive me on this, but it seems like I can't have it both ways. The laptop can't act as a music server when it is relying on the SB3 for a network connection? I assume when I put the Mac Pro 2.66, acting as the server, I will run into the same problem. Any suggestions? I'm going to try to have the Apple Store install a Extreme Wifi card in the Mac Pro but I've heard there have been a lot of issues on these retrofits as the 2.0 and 2.66 (now end of life) did not come standard with Bluetooth or Airport Wifi. -- Jazz1 Jazz1's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6623 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44846 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

When I looked at Ripcaster at 9am on Tuesday and saw "In Stock", I decided to order. I hoped that they might have some spare after the pre-orders (I tried to call to check this, but only got an answerphone). By the time I checked later that morning, they were out of stock again :-( but were expecting more stock later this week :-) I got an email in the evening saying that they didn't receive enough stock to "complete" my order, but they're expecting more stock next week. (This doesn't exactly say that one of that stock is earmarked as MineMineMine, but I'll be optimistic for now!) Ah well, I didn't think it'd be easy to get hold of one yet, and had resigned myself to waiting. I suppose if I were really, really keen I could try to find another place that really has one spare right now, but I'm not that desperate (only single-really keen). Mediawiki uses namespaces for separating policy pages/discussion from content pages/discussion. I agree with the quoted post and its implications for this thread's originator. Vinyl was not recorded with the specs that are sought, viz. 24/96. Although it was originally recorded to analog, and assuming pristine quality of the master tapes, you are still limited by the fact that the recording equipment at that time (eons ago in tech years) is nowhere near the specs being sought. 24/96 of vinyl without any additional editing or processing would only show up the imperfections of the source material. I assume the original poster is not intending to do any editing or processing. That being the case, not only would nothing be gained by 24/96, it might actually make the original sound worse. -- mortslim mortslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11039 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43510 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Apologies if I mention something already covered, but I just didn't get myself to work through 35 pages. Page breaks are an issue, especially when including the tracks. My current solution works in MS Word: - Disable line breaks in the Rows tab of the table properties to keep albums on one page - Use the replace command to replace all boldface font formats with boldface plus "keep with next" paragraph formats to keep headers with the albums I don't know if these Word features are accessible from mhtml, but it sure was nice to have them included in the output already. I like to have the table listed by Genre, but I don't need to have it mentioned (I only use three). But despite the fact I chose not to have the Genre displayed, I still get it. So I eliminate all instances of Genre, again by the replace command. Finally, I know that it is the tracks that are listed - I delete the line that says "Tracks:" Cheers -- ElFishi ElFishi's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15528 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41597 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I use a bryston dac , which upsamples, and I really dont need 24/96 since the vast majority of my music is 16/44.1 When you download 24/88 or thos 24/96 files from the internet that are playable on the SB3 I think I benefit more from the care taken in the recording event, not especially the 24/96 or whatever recording technique. Re: [slim] Newbie said " I dont Get it... is JIve..."
There is another thread on the exact topic of the sbc vs nokia etc. just do a search. In the meantime, my two cents... I have both the n770 and the new controller (and I spent a day using an itouch for this purpose). I think the new controller is much better. But to be fair I should qualify that by saying: I'm a gadget guy (which, actually, is why I got the nokia in the first place); I tend to be in the one-device-for-one-function camp rather than in the all-functions-on-one-device camp; I am not very good at watching my pennies (see gadget guy above) and tend to want the new, new thing and don't get too worked up about getting my money's worth. So if you had the budget for just one gadget and you really wanted a hand-held device that could control squeezeboxen AND browse the internet then you should explore the nokia or iphone. If you want a better remote for your squeezeboxen then get the controller. One other thing, I've had the nokia for over a year and neither my kids or my wife ever used it. Within hours of setting up the controller both kids and the wife picked it up and made it work --of course, this may be a reason NOT to get it for some:) -- cshaida cshaida's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1981 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44802 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Used to connect remotely, now I can't
I'm afraid I don't completely understand what it means when you say, for example, NAT TCP3843; what does "NAT" mean? Does this mean I need to open port 3843 using TCP protocol? If so I have opened those ports, whith the exception of 3483 inbound to the client; I'm trying to access SqueezeCenter from work, and there is a 0% chance of them opening up their firewall to facilitate this. However, if I understand correctly this would only be necessary if I wanted to use softsqueeze? In the past I've simply used a media player such as winamp to play the stream, which meant that I only had to open up my home firewall. A couple of other things I'm wondering about: does it matter what the hostname is on the server? Currently it is set to localhost.localdomain. Is there anything I can try from the command line to double check that the software firewall is disabled on my server? According to the network configuration tool in GNOME it is, but maybe this is inaccurate? Re: [slim] SqueezeCenter setup - UNC path inconsistencies
As long as you use the d:\shares\ you should be OK. You certainly shouldn't use the other folders you might find, the ones named using all numbers. That would totally destroy the file structure. However, it is strongly suggested that you use the UNC paths. If for no other reason that abstraction. The d:\shares\ paths could change for any number of reasons in the future but the network share \\server\music would be repointed at its new location. Thus using UNC shouldn't break anything using d:\shares\music might break in the future. -- Zaragon Zaragon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14577 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44253 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I was thinking that if you're not sure about what you are looking for then you tend to go looking for what it is you are trying to do. So perhaps the top level should be structured around the user experience of getting a new SB installation. Of course as soon as you get past the top level you can end up in the same place as you might have done from a different top level but that is one of the good things about a Wiki. How about the following. In some ways it is the same as it is now but with different heading terms. But instead of the focus being on the items it's on "how". What do I need *Squeezebox *Computers *Network *Wireless *Internet access Installing the software *SqueezeCentre *Upgrading *My Squeezebox wants a firmware upgrade Installing your SqueezeBox Adding a plug-in Using Internet services Learn more about the devices *Duet *Transporter *Classic What if it goes wrong *Basic fault finding *Wrestling with wireless *Making the library behave *I'm out I want my music! *I said this, but it said that! [slim] Connecting via Duet to a wired system
I'm trying to clear up some uncertainties I have about the capability of the new Duet system. I have 2 SB3's both running wired back to the router, which has its wireless transmission switched off. It is switched off for security and because it wasn't capable of transmitting to an SB3 positioned in the far reaches of the house. My idea is to buy a Duet system. Connect the Duet receiver wired back to the router. Leave the router wireless transmission off and communicate with the Duet in ad hoc mode using the new controller. If I use this setup will I have control of both of my SB3's through the Duet link? As long as I position the Duet player centrally, I should always get a signal between the controller and the Duet. If you can stream to winamp and not to softsqueeze, than it's almost certain that 3483 is a problem. Also, try appplet version of softsqueeze. What about third party skins, third party clients, third party applets for SqueezePlay ? It might be suitable to either name the top level entry "Third party software" or divide it into several entries. 3. I would like some place to put setup tutorials that explains how to setup different things, specifically I'm thinking of how to accomplish different things with combination of several third party plugins. Basically, I would like to move everything I currently have on my own wiki regarding this to the new Logitech wiki: http://wiki.erland.homeip.net/index.php/Category:SlimServer_Configuration_Examples It might also be a good idea to think about the structure under third party plugins, it would be really useful if it was possible to enter some more information for each plugin not just a link to the developer site. Personally I would like to move the stuff regarding my own plugins that now is stored on my own wiki to the new Logitech wiki: http://wiki.erland.homeip.net/index.php/Category:SlimServer_Plugins This information needs to be easy to find, I suppose it could be put under a new "Third party software" entry or under the "SqueezeCenter" entry, but I'm not sure if a new user will be able to find it in either places. 4. A "Do It Yourself" or "Customization projects" or some similar section would be interesting in addition to the DIY forum that currently exist. Making explanations about finished DIY projects available on the wiki will make them easier to find than in the current DIY forum where they are hidden among all other DIY stuff. 5. Maybe it would be suitable to have a "Developers guide" or something similar on the top menu to make it easier to find the developer related stuff which is now found in various places. -- erland Erland Isaksson 'My homepage' (http://erland.homeip.net) 'My download page' (http://erland.homeip.net/download) (Developer of 'TrackStat, SQLPlayList, DynamicPlayList, Custom Browse, Custom Scan, Custom Skip, Multi Library and Database Query plugins' (http://wiki.erland.homeip.net/index.php/Category:SlimServer)) erland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3124 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44957 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I still haven't figured out the other niggles but operational > issues take priority. Let me summarize your setup (with some assumptions), to see if I understand your problem correctly: - Main XP system w/ storage, running SqueezeCenter and connected to your home network and the internet. Let's pretend this computer has an IP address of 192.168.1.100. *Is this on 24/7, or at least on whenever you want to listem to music?* - Two Squeezeboxes connected to your home network. Let's pretend these have IP addresses of 192.168.1.101 and 192.168.1.102 (which means they are on the same network segment). - You have a laptop that you would like to use to *-control-* the music you're listening to on the Squeezeboxes. It can connect to the same network as the main XP box and the Squeezeboxes. You don't want this computer to act as a server for music--just a controller. Given this information, here's how I would set up the system: Connect your Squeezeboxes to SqueezeCenter running on the main XP box (IP address 192.168.1.100). Verify they work correctly with the standard IR remote. Open a browser on your laptop and enter the following URL (exactly as shown): http://192.168.1.100:9000 This will open up the SqueezeCenter web ui, served from the main XP system, and will allow you to control both players. *Note:* You do not need to install SqueezeCenter on this system at all. If you're using SqueezeCenter 7 (rather than SlimServer 6.5.x), you won't need to switch to SqueezeNetwork any longer as SC can act as a proxy whenever you wish to access SN services. If this isn't what you wanted (in other words, I misunderstood you), let me know and I'll try to help get you back on track. -=> Jim -- JimC "well, she wasn't all of that, but she sure was some of that." -- BKlaas' college buddy JimC's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9428 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44916 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I'd put more links up top from the Beginners Guide. There's a ton of pages linked from there which are very useful, and not just to beginners. Often We should look at what people typically ask about and make sure those links are obvious on the front page. Off the top of my head that would be artwork, tagging, file formats, network topologies/server installs. -- radish radish's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=77 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44957 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] anyone have SoftSqueeze running across the internet?
I\'ve used SoftSqueeze to listen to music on my Squeezecenter back home across the Internet. The main bottleneck for me was the upload speed on my Internet connection where SqueezeCenter is located, since I can only get like 128 Kbps upload speed reliabily (even if I have 1500 Kbps download speed). In order for this to work I had to lower the quality of streaming to 64Kbps (or 80Kbps by doing some source code tweaking on Squeezecenter), and since the default Squeezecenter interface is \'slow for Internet use\', I use the classic skin interface to browse from the internet. What Sofsqueeze version are you using?, I think I had problems too with versions before 3.6, you should use the one that comes with Squeezecenter. -- pichonCalavera *rip* (eac) > *convert* (flac) > *tag* (musicbrainz/mp3tag) > *normalize* (replaygain/foobar2000) > *albumart* (www) > *transport* (winscp) > *store* (debian) > *rescan* (squeezecenter) > *play* (squeezebox) > *mix* (musicip) > *listen* (sennheiser) > *scrooble* (last.fm) > *enjoy* (me :) pichonCalavera's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13068 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44925 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] SqueezeCenter 7.0 - No icon in system tray
Just wanted to pass this on, if anyone else has a similar problem. On Windows XP Pro (updated): Uninstalled SlimServer 6.5.4 & deleted associated files in C:\Program Files. Rebooted. Installed SqueezeCenter 7.0 Installation went very smooth. (I use iTunes to mananage music library & playlists). On subsequent log ins, no SqueezeCenter icon in the system tray, regardless of how SqueezeCenter is started: as an application or as a service. Task Manager Processes showed that both SqueezeCenter and SqueezeTray are running, and I could open the SqueezeCenter via Start -> All Programs -> SqueezeCenter. Many troubleshooting iterations later: Went to My Network Places and clicked on "Hide icons for networked UPnP devices." Rebooted. Everything copacetic now. Have not tried to run SqueezeCenter with UPnP client enabled (Advance -> Network) and UPnP enabled in WinXP because I don't need that capability. Awesome re-design of the interface and program upgrade!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
